Juventus fans had it all planned out. Get a point against Roma on Sunday for the Scudetto, win the Coppa Italia on Wednesday and return to Turin for the title party in the final home game against Crotone. That leaves a good week to prepare for Real Madrid in the Champions League Final, as Bologna are nothing but a footnote in the campaign. Open-top bus booked, stage set, singers arranged. Such hubris from the Old Lady.

Max Allegri and his players continue to declare “we’ve won nothing yet,” but the message really hasn’t gone through. For weeks and even months there has been talk of doing the Treble and following in the footsteps of Inter in 2010, but Juve are getting way ahead of themselves here.

There were signs of trouble when scraping draws with Atalanta and Torino, then they ran into a Roma side that was clearly more motivated. It had little to do with the title race and all about trying to avoid the dreaded Champions League preliminary round. Juve were playing for a point and it showed, but the real worry is that this performance was the culmination of a trend rather than a one-off blip.

In the past, the Bianconeri have used defeats to shake themselves out of their torpor and get focused again. After the loss to Genoa in November, they surged up the standings. Following Fiorentina in January, Allegri switched to 4-2-3-1 and never looked back. Perhaps this setback at the Olimpico is just what they needed to prevent a potential slide right at the business end of the season.

Don’t already look ahead to Cardiff and Real Madrid. Lazio are on fire at the moment with Keita Balde Diao and Ciro Immobile in particularly sparkling form. They have a bad record against Juve, losing their last six meetings, but the same was true in the Derby della Capitale before smashing Roma twice between Serie A and Coppa Italia in a matter of weeks.

While Juventus have their gaze towards the horizon for the Scudetto and Champions League, Lazio’s campaign trajectory is all aimed squarely on this night. They’ve already secured Europa League football and can happily throw all their eggs into this final basket.

Keita’s pace and the strength in the air of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, particularly on set plays, can be deadly weapons against what remains an ageing Juventus defence. Yes, they can read the game like no other, but will we see the same absolute focus they showed against the likes of Barcelona and Monaco? If not, the Treble talk can collapse at the first hurdle.

That’s not to even mention the upcoming match with Crotone, a side who are desperate to avoid relegation and amassed 17 points in seven rounds – more than any other side in that period. If the Bianconeri are rotating the squad in the hope of simply bullying their way to three points, that could be a huge mistake. It’d also leave the Scudetto hanging in the balance to the final round at Bologna, a team with nothing to play for, but with revitalised confidence lately.

It’s too easy to stay committed and focused against Real Madrid. Lazio, and Crotone, will be no pushovers and Juventus cannot take this lightly.

Juventus v Lazio

Coppa Italia Final –  Wednesday, 17th May – 19:45 GMT – Stadio Olimpico

juventus

Juventus

Juventus come off a pretty horrid performance against Roma, where they failed to withstand the opponent’s charge in the second half and conceded three goals, something that should not happen considering that the defence has been capable of shutting down the Barcelona attack in the near past. That means that the bout was not tackled with the adequate focus. Massimiliano Allegri opted to rest Paulo Dybala and when he is not out there, it is always trouble, especially when Juan Cuadrado is not having his best match. The coach also reverted back to a three-man midfield featuring Mario Lemina and Stefano Sturaro alongside Miralem Pjanic: the two youngsters had a dynamic performance, but all in all, the whole department did not have the usual weight.

Roma cut the lead to four points, so Juventus are still firmly in the driver’s seat for the title and will simply need to take care of business in one of the next two games. Unfortunately, there will be no Scudetto parade because the management cancelled the planned celebration scheduled after the Crotone game out of superstition after the Olimpico debacle.

Up next, the Coppa Italia final against Lazio. Considering the rotation in the Roma game, this has been regarded as a priority and how could it not be. The Old Lady has won the last two editions and will try to three-peat for the first time in history. It helps to have a good tradition against this opponent, as we have won the last nine encounters.

There are two big doubts concerning the lineup: Paulo Dybala is dealing with a sore flexor, while Mario Mandzukic received a big blow to the back in the last tilt. Both are questionable heading into the final and could decide to bite the bullet considering the circumstance. The situation of the Argentinian is trickier because you can not absolutely risk to lose him for a month in case of a strain. Therefore, there is a little more optimism about the Croatian, who is nursing a painful bruise that should not linger much further.

Dybala’s presence will dictate the formation: there is no 4-2-3-1 without him. Mandzukic could be replaced by Stefano Sturaro, even though he is meh there, or by putting both Alex Sandro and Kwadwo Asamoah together. 4-4-2 and not 4-2-3-1 is the likeliest choice in case La Joya is not able to recover, with two pure forwards and a strong flank game to feed them. If both are out, Allegri will have to work hard to come up with a passable attack: an idea could be to move Juan Cuadrado to the left and advance Dani Alves in the trident.

The Brazilian fullback is set to feature from the kick off, either at right back or winger. In the second case, Andrea Barzagli would have a better chance to start than Stephan Lichtsteiner. The fact that Tomas Rincon was not used on Sunday is probably an indication that he will play in this one, alongside Claudio Marchisio since Miralem Pjanic is suspended. Giorgio Chiellini and Alex Sandro will return with the XI. I would not put it past the coaching staff to use Barzagli in place of Leonardo Bonucci. Norberto Neto is set to finish off his Coppa Italia run.

4-2-3-1: Neto; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Sandro; Rincon, Marchisio; Alves, Dybala, Mandzukic; Higuain.

Injuries:

Khedira (hamstring), Rugani (tibia), Pjaca (knee).

Suspensions:

Pjanic.

Lazio

Lazio will try to stop Juventus’ attempt to put the first step toward the treble and take their revenge after the 2015 final, which was decided by an overtime goal by none other than Alessandro Matri. They basically rested all their best players against Fiorentina as they are already fairly sure to finish in fourth position. A terrific season for Simone Inzaghi, who was retained after the failed courtship of Marcelo Bielsa and proved to be a Serie A caliber coach.

They have used two tactics this season: 4-3-3 and 3-5-2. For a while, they preferred having Balde Keita off the bench in order to sub in an impact guy. However, he is playing so well that it would be asinine to keep him out right now; he is thriving now that he is playing more centrally. He has scored seven goals in the last four matches, so they will wisely choose to stick with what is working. The downside is that Felipe Anderson is headed to the bench and, despite disappointing a little bit this season, he remains their best offensive distributor. An extreme solution would be to use him as RWB, but that is probably too offensive for a game against Juventus.

Marco Parolo appeared to have injured his knee against Fiorentina, but he practiced in the days prior to the game and should start. Therefore, Inzaghi will not need to do much gymnastics to find an XI: Parolo and Lucas Biglia in the midfield, Senad Lulic on the left and Dusan Basta on the right. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic plays an hybrid role, both as box-to-box and attacking midfielder. In case of absence by Parolo, Lulic will be slotted in the middle, with Patric or Basta on the left since Jordan Lukaku will be sidelined by a muscular injury.

There is a little in the defence, where they have rotated all the men they had at disposal, between the explosive Bastos and Stefan Radu, who has a little edge because of his experience, but the Angolan colossus has done well when his name was called up and could be better suited to go to war with Mandzukic. Stefan De Vrij and Wallace will complete the trio.

Keita is on fire and poses the biggest threat: he is so slick and has improved on his finishing over the last two years. Paired with a 25-goal striker like Ciro Immobile, that is a potent attack. In general, they are so stout, poised and physical. If they managed to erase the burden of the lengthy losing streak, they could have a real chance at grabbing the trophy.

3-5-2: Strokosha; Bastos, De Vrij, Wallace; Basta, Parolo, Biglia, Milinkovic-Savic, Lulic; Immobile, Keita.

Injuries:

Lukaku (hamstring), Marchetti (knee).

Suspensions:

None.

Juventus will try to pick up their first title of the season and continue their attempt to become only the seventh club to win the European Treble when they face Lazio in the final of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday.

The only club capable of winning the Treble this season, Juventus currently hold a four-point lead over AS Roma in Serie A and also will play Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final in Cardiff on June 3.

Barcelona were the last to win the domestic league, domestic cup and Champions League when they defeated Juventus in the Champions League final in 2015. Inter Milan are the only Italian club to have achieved the honour, having won Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League in 2010-11.

SIG European Treble winners
Barcelona are the most recent club to win the treble and the only one to do it twice.

Juventus will try to become the first club to win the Coppa Italia in three consecutive years and add to their record 11 victories in the competition all-time. They defeated Lazio twice during the season, winning 1-0 away on Aug. 27 and 2-0 at home on Jan. 22.

According to FiveThirtyEight.com's Soccer Power Index (SPI), Juventus have a 64 percent chance of defeating Lazio on Wednesday. They also have a 96 percent chance of winning Serie A but only a 45 percent chance of defeating Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

SIG Juventus treble SPI
Juventus have a 28 percent chance of winning the Treble, according to FiveThirtyEight.com's Soccer Power Index (SPI).

Lazio have won the Coppa Italia six times, last winning it in 2013. AS Roma have won it nine times, Inter have won it seven times and Fiorentina have also won it six times.

The final has been held at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome since ending the two-leg format in 2008.

Juventus have the chance to secure the first trophy of a potential treble on Wednesday, as they take on Lazio in the Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Bianconeri are on the brink of another Serie A title after a memorable 2016-17 campaign, and they'll take on Real Madrid in the final of the UEFA Champions League next month. But Massimiliano Allegri and his players will be focusing on winning this prize first and foremost.

Lazio have the potential to spoil the party, though. Simone Inzaghi's side are finishing the campaign with a flourish and played superbly over two legs to eliminate rivals Roma in the semi-final. They are the underdogs but boast the talent to cause any side problems.

Team News

As noted by Richard Thomas of The Independent, Allegri has said he has doubts over whether Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala will be able to feature due to injury. Andrea Barzagli and Dani Alves were also noted as possible absentees.

Per Transfermarkt, Lazio's Jordan Lukaku and Marco Parolo both have knocks and are doubts for the game. Goalkeeper Federico Marchetti is unlikely to return to full fitness until next season.

Although the priority for Juventus at this stage of the campaign will be adding the Champions League to their domestic dominance, a win in Wednesday's encounter can help build confidence ahead of their big date in Cardiff against Madrid.

It's a competition Juve have a proud recent record in, too, as they chase a 12th win overall and a third in succession.

You'd expect them to get over the line. This season the Bianconeri have excelled in the biggest games, with the experience of men like Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci ensuring the team is cohesive. Juve also have the stardust of Gonzalo Higuain up top.

Over two legs in the semi-final, Higuain scored three times against former club Napoli to help the Italian champions through to this stage.

Per Squawka Football, he's the man Lazio need to watch:

The Biancocelesti have weapons, though. Under Inzaghi, the team has played with a tremendous authority and flexibility, moving up the Serie A standings and into fourth spot.

Although there have been many standout performers for Lazio lately—Stefan de Vrij, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile to name a few—it's Keita Balde Diao who has caught fire at the perfect time for Lazio.

Lazio have been fantastic as of late.

In his last four Serie A games, the Senegal international has seven goals and one assist.

As this graphic from WhoScored.com illustrates, Diao has been ruthless in front of goal so far this season:

If Lazio are going to trouble Juventus, you sense their in-form forward will have a big role to play. His searing pace and powerful running is capable of turning the Bianconceri defence and should provide an outlet when the capital club do eventually come under heavy pressure.

Given they play their home matches at the Olimpico, Lazio will also be familiar with their surroundings, and you suspect they will look to follow the blueprint adhered to by Roma in this stadium on Sunday, when they got the better of Juventus 3-1 in a thrilling game.

However, when the pressure really bites, that's when the Bianconeri players have shown their best in the 2016-17 season. That winning mentality and added quality will eventually see them edge an entertaining final.

Prediction: Juventus 2-1 Lazio

Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij insists “anything could happen” in a one-off game against Juventus.

The Aquile face the Serie A leaders in tonight’s Coppa Italia final, with the Turin giants aiming to win the treble.

The Biancocelesti haven’t beaten Juve since a 2-1 win in this competition in 2013, but the Dutch international believes they can lift the trophy this evening.

“In my opinion it doesn’t matter how you get to a final,” De Vrij told TGR Lazio.

“It’s a particular game which is open to any result. The important thing is to come into it prepared, Juventus are a very strong team, but we’ve also grown in recent years.

“Over 90 minutes, or possibly 120, anything can happen.”

Former Lazio and Juventus Coach Dino Zoff believes tonight’s Coppa Italia final will be “a great match”.

The ex-goalkeeper is a popular figure at both clubs, having won six Scudetti as a player for the Bianconeri and been Coach of the Biancocelesti twice, as well as sporting director.

“The two sides are coming into it well,” Zoff said on Radio Incontro Olympia.

“On Sunday they didn’t get results but they’ve both had an extraordinary season. The solidity of Juventus against the verve of Lazio: it will be a great match.

“Miralem Pjanic and Sami Khedira? Juventus have always shown that even with big names missing they have the ability to overcome difficulties. They’ll feel it [their absence] but not too much.”

Zoff was also asked about Paul Gascoigne, the troubled former Lazio midfielder who will turn 50 in 10 days.

“I remember every colour: beautiful, ugly desperate. He’s one who throws away his genius with incorrect behaviours.

“I’m someone who looks at the long term, if someone has behavioural problems during the best part of their career, then you know how things will go when it’s all over.

“He was a crazy artist who made me suffer, I’ve always admired him.”

Lazio will be hoping to put a halt to Juventus’ treble hopes as the two face off in the Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Bianconeri have already beaten the Biancocelesti twice in Serie A this season, but Simone Inzaghi’s men have proven on plenty of occasions this year that they deserve to be taken seriously.

We asked our Twitter followers who they thought would win Wednesday’s crunch match, and over half who responded expect the Bianconeri to make it three in a row.

Who will win the #TIMCup tonight? #CoppaItalia

Coppa Italia: Sturaro in for Mandzukic?

Mario Mandzukic might be rested in favour of Stefano Sturaro as Juventus face Lazio in tonight’s Coppa Italia Final.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 21.00 CET - 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

Max Allegri confessed he had some decisions to make, as Paulo Dybala and Mandzukic are carrying muscular problems.

According to the latest reports, Dybala is ready to start, but Mandzukic will not be put at risk of further injury so close to the Champions League Final on June 3.

Instead, Sturaro will be given the extra spot on the left side of the trio supporting Gonzalo Higuain.

There are also reshuffles in midfield, where Sami Khedira is injured and Miralem Pjanic suspended, so Tomas Rincon is expected to get a rare start.

The big question at Lazio remains Marco Parolo, who is still dealing with a knock to the knee he sustained during Saturday’s defeat to Fiorentina.

Probable line-ups

Juventus: Neto; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Marchisio, Rincon; Dani Alves, Dybala, Sturaro; Higuain

Lazio: Strakosha; Bastos, De Vrij, Wallace; Basta, Milinkovic-Savic, Biglia, Parolo, Lulic; Immobile, Keita

Marco Parolo said he is ready to play the Coppa Italia Final for Lazio and “we know how we have to approach Juventus.”

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 21.00 CET - 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“I am ready, it’s a Final and I have to play, so I’m doing everything possible to be there,” the midfielder told Rai Sport after concerns over a knee injury.

“Juve have already proved their quality and we want to cause them as many problems as possible. We know how we have to approach them, as to be aggressive and determined on every ball is the only way to hurt them.

“We want to make life difficult for Juventus and make sure they know Lazio are on that pitch. They are hard to score against, but still have a few weaknesses and we must be precise to make the most of them.”

There are reports the ultras have prepared a 70-metre choreography of an eagle, the club symbol.

“The fans can fire us up, they are the 12th Man and can take us to victory.”

Alex Sandro warned Juventus “have to prove ourselves tonight” in the Coppa Italia Final against Lazio, as their Treble target begins.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 21.00 CET - 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“We are all concentrated to win this match. We have to push hard and are all happy to be here taking part in this great game,” he told Rai Sport.

“We have to prove ourselves tonight. Lazio have a lot of pace, but we have prepared to face their style of football.”

This is a tough time for Juventus, who are going into a potential Scudetto this weekend and then the Champions League Final with Real Madrid on June 3.

“It’s a wonderful moment for us, but it starts now.”

Lazio director Igli Tare said they “don’t need a miracle” to beat Juventus in the Coppa Italia Final. “We mustn’t hide our ambitions.”

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 21.00 CET - 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“We are facing perhaps the best side in Europe right now. We don’t need a miracle, but we do need to play in the style Lazio have had in recent months,” Tare told Rai Sport.

“It’s a one-off match, we have done well so far this season and mustn’t hide our ambitions. To win this trophy it takes a great performance.

“If we win, good, but if we lose, then we’ll applaud Juventus. We know that they are in great shape and have no weaknesses, but we will give it our all and hope for a bit of good luck too.”

Lazio supporters on social media were unhappy with the announcement Paolo Tagliavento would be officiating.

“Considering previous games, there is a reason why the fans were doubtful on Tagliavento as the referee. I consider him an excellent professional, we should respect his work. I do not think he’s in bad faith, but tonight is a Final where nobody can afford a mistake.”

Juventus are able to start Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic, while Lazio go with Marco Parolo and Keita Balde Diao in the Coppa Italia Final.

It kicks off tonight at the Stadio Olimpico at 21.00 CET - 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

This is a one-off match, so if they are level after 90 minutes, it will go to extra time and maybe even penalties.

Max Allegri warned he had fitness concerns for forwards Dybala and Mandzukic, as both picked up muscular problems and were in doubt.

However, both are in the starting XI for what appears to be a 3-4-2-1 formation, supporting Gonzalo Higuain, or the 4-2-3-1 as usual with Dani Alves pushed up.

Miralem Pjanic is suspended with Sami Khedira, Daniele Rugani and Marko Pjaca injured, so Tomas Rincon steps in.

As with all the Coppa Italia games this season, Gigi Buffon is rested and leaves the gloves to Norberto Neto.

Lazio go for the 3-5-2 that has proved successful in recent months, as they knocked Inter and Roma out of the tournament on their way to the Final and secured Europa League qualification.

The Aquile are without Federico Marchetti and Jordan Lukaku, while Parolo has recovered sufficiently from a knock to the knee and starts with strapping applied.

Keita Balde Diao has scored seven goals in his last four Serie A games, so partners ex-Juventus striker Ciro Immobile.

Felipe Anderson is expected to come off the bench and use his pace against tired Bianconeri legs in the second half.

Lazio have lost their last six meetings with Juventus, home and away in all competition.

Juventus: Neto; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Marchisio, Rincon; Dani Alves, Dybala, Mandzukic; Higuain

Juventus bench: Buffon, Audero, Benatia, Lichtsteiner, Mattiello, Asamoah, Lemina, Kean, Sturaro, Leris, Cuadrado

Lazio: Strakosha; Bastos, De Vrij, Wallace; Basta, Biglia, Parolo, Milinkovic-Savic, Lulic; Immobile, Keita

Lazio bench: Vargic, Adamonis, Patric, Hoedt, Radu, Murgia, Crecco, Lombardi, Luis Alberto, Felipe Anderson, Djordjevic, Tounkara

Max Allegri notes “the difference is in the details” when Juventus take on Lazio in the Coppa Italia Final this evening.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 21.00 CET - 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

This comes fresh off another match at the Olimpico, their 3-1 Serie A defeat to Roma on Sunday evening, which postponed the Scudetto celebrations.

“There are games in a long season, when you go all the way on three fronts, you can run into a night like this, especially in the second half,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“The squad has always reacted well to defeat. Simone Inzaghi has shown he’s a smart Coach and the important thing now is to keep focused and see the right Juventus, who can make the difference with the details.”

Simone Inzaghi said Lazio have “done something historic this season, but winning the Coppa Italia would be the icing on the cake” against Juventus.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 21.00 CET - 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“I think the lads have been extraordinary,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“We’ve done something historic, because considering the way we started, reaching the Europa League three rounds early and the Coppa Italia Final is all down to them.

“Now we are in the Final, so to win in front of our home fans would be the icing on the cake. I have been fortunate enough to have won three editions of the Coppa Italia as a player, two with the Primavera side as a Coach, now I’m in the big boys’ final…

“We know that Juventus are in the Champions League Final, so they are an excellent side. We are preparing as best we can and we’ll see what happens on the pitch.”

Juventus director Beppe Marotta insists there is “no pressure” to win the Treble, but concedes “it’ll be a struggle in this final month.”

The Coppa Italia Final against Lazio kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 21.00 CET - 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“We know that this is an important Final for us,” the director general told Rai Sport.

“We have been very busy this season, as at the end of the day we will have played 57 matches. This is a one-off game and we’ll play with our motivation.

“On Sunday we lost to Roma, who are second in the Serie A table, but we are sure that when the squad is rotated, whoever plays will give their best. Coach Max Allegri makes his choices.”

This is the first step towards the Treble, so are expectations weighing on Juve against Lazio tonight?

“We have no pressure over the Treble. We are concentrated on three objectives and know that it will be a struggle in this final month, so our efforts must be further intensified and focused. These are efforts from the players and the club.”

The Bianconeri will face Real Madrid in the Champions League Final on June 3.

HT 2-0: Juve leave Lazio behind

Keita Balde Diao hit the post, but Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci have given Juventus a 2-0 half-time lead over Lazio in the Coppa Italia Final.

The Bianconeri were hoping to make history as the first side ever to win three consecutive Coppa Italia titles, not to mention the first step towards a potential Treble ahead of the Champions League Final with Real Madrid on June 3. The Aquile had already secured Europa League qualification after hiring Simone Inzaghi when pre-season had already begun.

Miralem Pjanic was suspended with Sami Khedira, Daniele Rugani and Marko Pjaca injured, while Lazio missed Federico Marchetti and Jordan Lukaku, while Marco Parolo overcame a knee scare in the warm-up. The Biancocelesti had lost their last six meetings with Juve, home and away.

Keita Balde Diao almost scored within six minutes, as he went on the counter, skipped past Leonard Bonucci and the finish was deflected on to the base of the near post.

Moments later, Gonzalo Higuain’s scorching half-volley was beaten away by Thomas Strakosha, but Juve broke the deadlock when Dani Alves hit a volley into the ground from Alex Sandro’s cross that bounced past the goalkeeper into the far top corner. Senad Lulic was late in closing the Brazilian down, but it was the ex-Barcelona star’s third goal in five appearances.

Paulo Dybala stung Strakosha’s gloves from the edge of the box, then the Albanian goalkeeper performed a stunning double save on Dybala’s counter and the Dani Alves follow-up from point-blank range.

Parolo was in doubt to the last minute and did eventually have to limp off. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic sprinted back for a decisive block on Dybala, but from that resulting corner, Alex Sandro knocked it on for unmarked Leonardo Bonucci to tap in from four yards.

Ciro Immobile’s diving header whistled wide from the Milinkovic-Savic cross, prompting an absolutely furious reaction on the touchline from Max Allegri. Another Milinkovic-Savic counter was ruined by Dusan Basta’s misplaced pass for Immobile when two-against-two.

Mario Mandzukic was left bleeding from his eyebrow after an accidental clash of heads with Wallace. On the stroke of half-time, Neto took the sting out of a Milinkovic header from a corner.

Juventus 2 Lazio 0: Alves, Bonucci secure

historic third consecutive Coppa Italia

Juventus made history on Wednesday as they became the first team

to win the Coppa Italia three times in a row after a 2-0 win over Lazio.

May 17, 2017

Juventus took their first step towards the treble with an historic 2-0 win over Lazio in the Coppa Italia final at Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.

First-half goals from Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci secured an unprecedented third triumph in a row in Italy's premier cup competition and the 12th in their history.

It also means Juve's hopes of winning Serie A, the Coppa and the Champions League in a single season for the first time remain firmly intact.

Lazio, winners in 2013 and beaten finalists against the same opponents two years ago, hit the post through Balde Keita early on but found themselves behind soon afterwards thanks to a sixth goal of the season from Alves, who started on the right side of the attack for Massimiliano Allegri's favourites.

Juve pressed their advantage, doubling their lead through Bonucci with 24 minutes played, and it was a lead they rarely looked likely to surrender despite a drop in intensity after the break.

Neto – again preferred to Gianluigi Buffon in the cup – made a handful of good saves but Lazio ultimately toiled in vain as they suffered a second final defeat to Juve in three seasons.

They now head into a weekend match with Crotone knowing that a win will guarantee the league title with a game to spare, before they turn their attention towards the Champions League final with Real Madrid on June 3.

Lazio came within inches of the opener after only five minutes, Keita racing beyond Bonucci on the break before seeing a shot deflect off Andrea Barzagli, onto the near post and out.

Gonzalo Higuain teed up a fierce volley that Thomas Strakosha did well to parry, but he was caught out by Alves' finish after 12 minutes as Juve snatched the lead.

Alex Sandro found space down the left and looped a superb cross towards his compatriot at the far post, who bounced a volley off the turf, over the goalkeeper and into the net from six yards out.

Juve pushed for a quick-fire second and Strakosha kept his side in it with three exceptional saves, denying Paulo Dybala twice from distance before making a brilliant block to stop Higuain from slotting in from barely a yard out.

But Juve made the most of some slack defending to double their lead midway through the half, as Alex Sandro flicked on a corner to allow Bonucci – arriving unchallenged into the six-yard box – to tap home.

Lazio spurned chances to halve the deficit before the break, with Ciro Immobile heading wide and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic nodding straight at Neto from a corner, while substitute Felipe Anderson brought a good low save out of the Juve keeper as they kept up some pressure early in the second half.

Neto then reacted brilliantly to claw an Immobile header away from the bottom corner as Juve's lacklustre start to the second half continued, although Alves and Higuain twice fashioned chances to make it 3-0 only to see the moves fall apart in the penalty area.

Simone Inzaghi's side kept pushing in the closing stages but had little to show for their efforts, as Allegri celebrated his sixth trophy in only his third season in charge.

Key Opta stats:

- Juventus have won their 12th Coppa Italia, at least three more than any other team.
- Juventus are the first side ever to win the Coppa Italia title three times in a row.
- Since Allegri joined Juventus, they have won all of their 10 meetings with Lazio, scoring 20 goals and conceding only one.
Juventus have kept a clean sheet in each of the last seven matches against Lazio (all comp): they have scored 13 goals in the process (1.9 per game on average).
- Prior to tonight, Lazio had conceded no goals in the opening 30 minutes of play in the Coppa Italia 2016-17 - they shipped two tonight in that period.
- Dani Alves has been involved in five Juventus goals over his last five appearances in all competitions (three scored, two assisted).
- Alex Sandro has delivered two assists in a single game for Juventus for the first time since he joined the club.

Juventus Beat Lazio To Lift The Coppa Italia

Lazio couldn’t live with an superior Juventus as the Bianconeri went on to win the Coppa Italia 2-0 thanks to goals from Leonardo Bonucci and the brilliant Dani Alves.

The Serie A champions took and early lead after the ex-Barcelona man bagged his sixth goal of the season 11 minutes in, then Leonardo Bonucci doubled the advantage 13 minutes later, heading home from a corner.

The victory is Juventus’ 12th in the Coppa Italia, having also won it in each of the last three years, becoming the first side to do so, while also beating Lazio in the 2015 final.

Interestingly, since Massimiliano Allegri took the reigns at Juventus, they have won each of the 10 meetings against Lazio, scoring 20 and only conceding one.

A breathless opening period began with Keita Balde hitting the post from a tight angle as Lazio went for the jugular from the off. However, Juventus were their equal as a long range effort from Gonzalo Higuain is saved by Thomas Strakosha, then rebound fired just wide.

Juventus took the lead thanks to Dani Alves who has been involved in five goals in the last five matches – scoring three and assisting two.

A wonderful diagonal long ball from Alex Sandro found his fellow countryman in the penalty area, and he volleyed into the ground, with the ball then bouncing past Strakosha into the far corner.

Lazio then had to endure a barrage from the Juventus frontline, with Paulo Dybala the instigator. First the Argentine struck a thunderous shot which was palmed away by Strakosha, then he had another which Lazio’s Albania goalkeeper was equal to once more.

From that though, Dani Alves picked up the rebound and his low cross found Higuain, but his effort was saved by the legs of Strakosha on the line, before the ball was scrambled away.

A fine counter-attack from Juve saw Dybala waltz into the penalty area from the left, only for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to block the Juve No.21’s cross.

Goal number two was soon up, as an unmarked Bonucci headed home an Alex Sandro cross.

The pace slowed after that, as Juve looked keen to sit on their advantage, and the closest Lazio came to a goal toward the end of the half was from Ciro Immobile, whose diving header from 12 yard went inches wide.

After the break, substitute Felipe Anderson added some spark to the Lazio attack, forcing a good save from Neto from the edge of the penalty area.

Felipe Anderson then created an excellent chance for Immobile, floating a ball to the back post, but the 27-year-old could only direct his close range header straight at Neto.

It should have been three to Juve moments later as Dani Alves nutmegged a Lazio defender before playing the ball to a free Higuain on the edge of the area, but the Argentina international had his shot blocked.

Higuain was once again played in on goal, but his low cross rolled along the goal line before Lazio managed to clear.

At the other end, Keita blasted over crossbar and Immobile smashed straight into the arms of Neto as Lazio went looking for a way back into the game.

Then at the death Higuain had a chance to get the third, but after closing in on Strakosha the goalkeeper made the save with his outstretched leg.

Coppa Italia: Juventus Treble sinks Lazio

Juventus have made history with their third consecutive Coppa Italia trophy, beating Lazio 2-0 with Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci goals.

The Bianconeri have made the first step towards a potential Treble ahead of the Champions League Final with Real Madrid on June 3 and take the tournament for the 12th time.

On the stroke of half-time, Milinkovic-Savic’s header from a corner was too close to Neto.

Simone Inzaghi introduced Felipe Anderson, who within 60 seconds had forced a great fingertip save out of Neto with his fierce strike. The Brazilian’s cross then found Immobile for a header that Neto somehow palmed off the line from point-blank range.

Dusan Basta fired over from the edge of the box, but unlucky Lazio also lost Stefan de Vrij to injury. Dani Alves nutmegged Lulic to set up Higuain for an effort deflected by Lucas Biglia, then Pipita rolled across the face of goal only for nobody to meet it.

Luis Alberto tested Neto, Biglia knocked a ball down for Keita to blast over from just inside the penalty area and Neto needed two attempts to take the sting out of an Immobile turn and shot.

Lazio were pouring forward to re-open the Final, as Keita’s volley was deflected wide from the edge of the box and on that corner Immobile couldn’t keep his header on target at the back post.

Strakosha stuck out a foot to deny Higuain one-on-one, but Juve still emerged with the 2-0 victory and their third consecutive Coppa Italia celebration.

Juventus 2-0 Lazio: Juve win Coppa

Italia for third time in a row

Juventus made history on Wednesday as they became the first side to

win three consecutive Coppa Italia titles after beating Lazio 2-0 in Rome.

Massimiliano Allegri's side ultimately had the result sewn up in the first half and although they were tested by Lazio in the second period, they managed to keep their opponents at bay.

Dani Alves gave Juventus the lead in the 12th minute as he volleyed home from a fine Alex Sandro cross and the Brazilian added another assist as he whipped in a corner for Leonardo Bonucci to slot home 12 minutes later.

It was the first step in a series of trophy-deciding matches for the Old Lady, who are targeting the treble. They can seal their sixth Serie A title on Sunday before facing Real Madrid in the Champions League final on June 3.

The Stadio Olimpico clash started well as Keita Balde nearly gave Lazio a seventh-minute lead. The Senegal forward smashed an effort off the near post at point-blank range before Gonzalo Higuain tried his luck at the other end from around 25 yards, but his thunderous volley was pushed away by Thomas Strakosha.

Alves gave Juve the lead in the 12th minute. Sandro picked him out with a sublime long pass as the Brazilian drifted between the Lazio defence before volleying home, a high bounce sending the ball over Strakosha's head.

Juve could have added more to their tally eight minutes later but some fine work from the Albanian goalkeeper kept them at bay. He twice denied Paulo Dybala from long range, with the second save landing at the feet of Alves. He in turn squared the ball to Higuain, who was lurking in the six-yard box, but his shot was blocked by the feet of Strakosha.

Allegri's side did not have to wait long for their second though which came four minutes later as Sandro again turned provider, whipping in a corner that allowed Bonucci to tap home from the six-yard box after his run went unmarked by the Lazio defence.

But Lazio could twice have pulled goals back as the game drew towards half-time. Ciro Immobile headed just wide in the 35th minute after a fine pass from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic before the Serbian could only direct a header into the hands of Juve goalkeeper Neto as the referee brought the first half to a close.

Eight minutes into the second period and Lazio made their second substitution as Felipe Anderson was introduced to the game and he almost had an instant impact as his curling effort towards the top-right corner forced a good save from Neto.

The Juve stopper was in action again not long after as Anderson's cross found Immobile at the back post, but Neto made a reaction save to keep the header out - with goal line technology confirming the ball did not make it over the line - before Keita smashed the rebound into the side netting.

Juventus had fewer chances in the second half but could have added a third with 18 minutes of normal time to play. Alves danced his way past Senad Lulic on the right-hand side, cutting back for Higuain but the striker's effort was blocked.

The Argentine striker then powered his way to the touchline two minutes later, but no Juventus player made the run to tap home his inviting ball across the face of goal as it trickled wide.

With 10 minutes to play, Lazio nearly snuck home a reply as Wallace nodded on another fine Anderson cross, but Immobile could only sky his header over the crossbar with the linesman's offside flag already raised.

But despite pressure from the Rome side, they were not able to find their way past a famously resolute Juventus defence who lifted their 11th Coppa Italia title.

Leonardo Bonucci said the defeat to Roma “woke us up” so Juventus could rediscover their grit to defeat Lazio 2-0 in the Coppa Italia Final.

Dani Alves and Bonucci got the first-half goals at the Stadio Olimpico to decide the Coppa Italia Final this evening, a record third consecutive Juve trophy.

“It was a tough game, but we took the right approach and rediscovered our qualities. The defeat on Sunday did us good, it woke us up and now we have to focus on Crotone,” Bonucci told Rai Sport.

In this very stadium on Sunday, the Bianconeri lost 3-1 to Roma in Serie A to postpone the Scudetto party.

“In the second half against Roma it just wasn’t us. We were sluggish and not determined enough, so we gave ourselves a good talking to and are ready for 20 fiery days ahead.

“Lazio have a lot of quality in attack, so it was natural in a one-off game we’d have to allow them chances, but fortunately super Neto rescued us tonight.

“We knew before that this was the real Juventus. It was a shock when we didn’t approach Roma the right way, because Juve have got fans accustomed to living well, but it was a shake-up we needed.

“The Coppa Italia allowed those who didn’t play as much to make their mark and I thank the Coach and club for giving the team so much quality and tenacity this season.”

Juventus beat Lazio to win

Coppa Italia in quest for Treble

Goals from Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci secured Juventus their first trophy of a potential Treble haul as Lazio were defeated 2-0 in the Coppa Italia final in Rome.

The Bianconeri need a point from Sunday's Serie A visit of Crotone to win their sixth straight Scudetto and are also preparing for a Champions League final showdown with Real Madrid on June 3.

Boss Massimiliano Allegri might therefore have considered this rearranged match at the Stadio Olimpico a distraction but Juve were at near full-strength and a third-consecutive Coppa crown was decided by two of the Old Lady's star performers.

Try as they might, Lazio could not make an impact but their reward for an impressive run to the final is Europa League football, something their current league position of fourth would also guarantee.

They fired an early warning when Keita Balde Diao cut inside to hit the inside of a post, but Juve responded quickly with Gonzalo Higuain testing Thomas Strakosha's reflexes with a driven effort.

Alves, who scored one goal and set up two more as Juve beat Monaco to reach Cardiff, then extended his hot streak with a close-range finish from Alex Sandro's cross.

As the Bianconeri turned the screw, Paulo Dybala twice went close and Higuain was not far away.

In the 25th minute Bonucci made it 2-0 with Sandro again providing the assist as Juve's classy centre-back touched the ball home.

After the break Juve appeared more concerned with protecting the result and their first piece of silverware, with Dybala and Higuain linking up well but leaving Strakosha unthreatened.

Ciro Immobile dragged an instinctive save out of Neto as Simone Inzaghi reorganised his Biancocelesti team in pursuit of a game-changing goal, but to no avail.

Lazio's wait for a first cup since 2013 continues while Juve look forward to a fortnight in which they might add two more trophies to their well-stocked cabinet.

Coppa Italia hero Dani Alves rivalling Ronaldo

for Europe's most decisive player

The Brazilian, who netted the opener in a 2-0 win over Lazio, has been

involved in five goals in his last five games for Juventus - from wing-back.

Dani Alves' agent claimed earlier this month that the 34-year-old is a better player now than he was when he joined Barcelona in 2008. It's becoming increasingly difficult to disagree: one of the most decisive players in Europe right now is a wing-back!

The best player on the pitch in both legs of Juventus' Champions League semi-final win over Monaco, Alves netted the opener in Wednesday's hard-fought 2-0 Coppa Italia final triumph over Lazio, as the Old Lady took the first step towards a treble, at a sold-out Stadio Olimpico.

The former Barcelona ace's effort was as well-taken as it was important. With the benefit of what was effectively home advantage, Lazio made a stirring start to their eagerly-awaited meeting with a Juventus side shorn of the services of their preferred midfield pairing of Miralem Pjanic and Sami Khedira through suspension and injury, respectively.

Dani Alves Juventus Lazio Coppa Italia

Former Bianconeri and Biancocelesti coach Dino Zoff had billed this encounter as a battle between "the solidity of Juventus and the verve of Lazio", and both were in evidence inside an exciting opening five minutes in which Keita saw a shot deflected off the hand of Andrea Barzagli and onto the base of Neto's post.

However, with just 12 minutes elapsed, Alves sneaked in behind Senad Lulic and Wallace before cleverly side-footing Alex Sandro's exquisite left-wing cross into the ground and up into the net past Thomas Strakosha.

It meant that the Brazil international has been involved in five goals (three goals and two assists) in his last five appearances for the Bianconeri.

He would have improved that remarkable record had it not been for the profligacy of Gonzalo Higuain, who somehow failed to convert from less than six yards out, after being picked out by Alves' precise low cross from the right-hand side of the box.

It did not prove a costly miss for Juve, though, because Leonardo Bonucci made no mistake when Alex Sandro flicked a corner in his direction midway through the first half.

Nobody had been more upset than Bonucci by Juve's failure to wrap up a sixth successive Serie A title by turning in a strangely sluggish performance in last weekend's 3-1 loss to Roma at the very same stadium.

He had called for the "real Juve" to turn up - and they did.

This was by no means a vintage performance from their attacking talent but their 'BBC' backline of Barzagli, Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini managed to contain a Lazio forward line that the latter centre-half had equated with Monaco in terms of movement and pace.

Essentially, Juve's most reliable and experienced performers stepped up to the mark and it was fitting that both goals came from defenders.

In claiming the Coppa Italia for an unprecedented third successive season, the Old Lady had needed her champions to show everyone else how it was done but Alves didn't need any guidance.

There are few more decorated players than the cheeky character who once jokingly made fun of Pele's inferior trophy haul.

Dani Alves Juventus Lazio Coppa Italia

"Dani's brought his winning mentality to Juventus," Alves' agent, Dinorah Santa Ana, stated earlier this month. "He’s a champion, and he’s come to win everything possible."

In this form, he might do exactly that.

The Coppa Italia is now in the bag. The Scudetto should be claimed against Crotone on Sunday. Then, it will be off to Cardiff for a date with Real Madrid, where he'll go head-to-head with Cristiano Ronaldo, who edged his side ever closer to the Liga title on the same night as Alves' heroics in Rome.

The Portuguese is 32. Dani Alves is two years old. They have never been good friends but has either man ever been in better form? Roll on June 3...

Max Allegri thanked all the Juventus players for their third consecutive Coppa Italia triumph, beating Lazio 2-0. “It was an extraordinary first half.”

Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci had the result locked down by half-time at the Stadio Olimpico.

“We have to compliment the lads for a great game, an extraordinary first half and Lazio deserve compliments for their entire campaign,” Allegri told Rai Sport.

The Bianconeri had lost 3-1 in this stadium on Sunday evening against Roma, postponing the Scudetto.

“Juve made up for Sunday’s inattentive performance. Now we have another important game against Crotone to finish off the title.

“The first half had a very high tempo and we made the most of our chances, so we did well defending in the second half.”

Dani Alves scored another decisive goal, his third in the last five games, but Allegri wouldn’t hear of praising a single man.

“I think it’s disrespectful to talk about just one player after a night like this. If we won the Coppa Italia, it’s thanks to all the players in the squad who got us here.

“It’ll be tough against Crotone, we need one victory and on Sunday it’ll be decisive match of the season, so we need all our fans there. We have to play with the same determination we showed tonight.”

Juventus 2 - Lazio 0: Initial reaction

Controversial opinion: The second game within the last four days at the Stadio Olimpico went a whole lot better than the first. I’ve gotten confirmation of this, so no need to go ahead and check with your inside sources.

It sure was nice to see Juventus do what they couldn’t do against Roma over the weekend. Not just win, which thanks to first-half goals from Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci was made possible, but also take home one of the three trophies that was all of 90 or so minutes away from being hauled in.

Indeed, Juventus have secured the first part of the possible treble that is out there for the taking. The Coppa Italia has been Juve’s the last two seasons and it’s stay right where it is for a third year running.

Outside of scoring the game’s first goal, Juventus did everything the opposite of what happened just a few days earlier in the 3-1 loss to Roma. It was like George Costanza drew up the game plan for them or something. Juventus got the lead and didn’t cough it up. Juventus added onto its lead instead of seeing the opposition level the score just a few minutes after the first goal was scored.

It was what you wanted to see from Juventus.

And they delivered the goods all of three days after quite a disappointing showing on the same Stadio Olimpico field.

Is that good? Because I feel like being the first-ever team to do something that involves winning trophies is pretty good.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • I’m just here for Max Allegri rage on the sidelines.
  • I’m just here for Dani Alves embarrassing opposing defenders.
  • If you ever find yourself in a bad mood, just go ahead and watch Alex Sandro’s cross on Alves’ goal. That is what happiness is made out of, my friends.
  • Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala did a lot of things right against Lazio. The only thing they weren’t able to do was score a goal even though both of them probably deserved one. Maybe they’re saving them for that other final Juventus are playing in a few weeks from now...
  • Dani Alves is playing his best football of the season at the perfect time. It seems quite a long time ago when we had the “Alves or Lichtsteiner?” discussion.
  • It’s getting close to the end of the first half. Juventus has a 2-0 lead. Lazio are on a counterattack. Out of the bottom-right part of my screen I see Andrea Barzagli sprinting back on defense to cover his man as Giorgio Chiellini goes for the ball. The Lazio player crosses it and Barzagli cuts it off. I’m thinking he ran at least 50 yards on the dead sprint to get to where the ball was going to be. Ball cleared. Barzagli is good.
  • As is the running joke around here, there are a decent amount of games where Juventus’ goalkeepers don’t have to do much of anything to pick up a clean sheet. This game was not one of those instances for Neto, who had arguably his best showing in between the sticks of the season. That one-handed save right in front of the goal line on Ciro Immobile’s header that ricocheted off the side of Barzagli’s head came at a crucial point in the second half when Lazio were starting to really throw numbers forward. This was Good Neto — and in a game where he needed to be just that.
  • How many of you still get a little bit worried when you see Claudio Marchisio on the ground after picking up a knock? Because I do.
  • One trophy down, two to go. What a fun final three weeks of the season this could be.
