Two dubious penalties were given as Cristiano Ronaldo equalised Memphis Depay's opener and made it 1-1 at half-time between Juventus and Lyon.

Lyon started deep, trying to lure Juventus high up the pitch and use their pace in behind. It worked a few times and eventually Houssem Aouar came charging into the box, brought down by a sliding tackle from Rodrigo Bentancur and referee Zwayer awarded the visitors a penalty after 10 minutes.

Bentancur was clearly on the ball but the pictures revealed that Federico Bernardeschi also caught the player slightly from behind and might have caused the fall. The decision stood and Memphis Depay dinked it down the middle and into the back of the net behind Wojciech Szczesny. .....

Juve 2-1 Lyon: Depay sends Juve out of CL

Cristiano Ronaldo’s second-half screamer wasn’t enough to keep Juventus in the Champions League as the 2-1 win sent Lyon through on away goals on Friday night.

The first leg was played in February and ended 1-0 for the French side, so the Bianconeri needed to win by two clear goals to get past the Champions League Round of 16. Paulo Dybala was only fit for the bench, with Douglas Costa, Mattia De Sciglio and Sami Khedira injured.

Bentancur was clearly on the ball, but the pictures revealed that Federico Bernardeschi also caught the player slightly from behind and might have caused the fall, although even this was a harsh call. The decision stood without an on-field VAR review and Memphis Depay dinked it down the middle and into the back of the net behind Wojciech Szczesny. This put the tie firmly in Lyon's hands, 2-0 up on aggregate with an away goal. ....

Miralem Pjanic was next in line as Juventus got another free kick from a similar position outside the area, this time he hit the wall, but the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Depay stopped it with his elbow, but the hand was close to his chest. Another controversial penalty, one that Ronaldo converted, but the match was tied at 1-1 after 45 minutes.

Juventus came out with the intensions of turning the game around quickly and a little magic from Ronaldo made the second half highly interesting.

The Portuguese superstar smashed into the top corner after 15 minutes. Lopes got a hand on it but couldn’t keep it out, as he pushed it into the side netting. .....

Agnelli: 'Juve will evaluate everything'

agnelli juventus lione intervista

Aug 7, 2020

Juventus President Andrea Agnelli backed his directors, coach Maurizio Sarri and Cristiano Ronaldo, but ‘the Champions League has to be an objective and we’ll take a few days to evaluate everything.’

The Bianconeri crashed out of the Champions League in the Round of 16, losing on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw with Olympique Lyonnais, a side that finished seventh in Ligue 1 this term.

“This season has been evidently bittersweet. It has been a very difficult campaign, we achieved a great result winning our ninth consecutive campaign and wrote a fantastic chapter in the history books.

“Maurizio deserves his own extraordinary page for himself, going from the amateur leagues to winning the Scudetto,” Agnelli told Sky Sport Italia.

“In the Champions League, obviously, it’s disappointing for us, for the players and the fans. As I said several times in recent years, the Champions league was a dream, now it has to be an objective.

“Going out like this is going to be a huge disappointment. We will take the next few days to consider, evaluate and decide how to go forward next season. .....
