Preview: Juventus vs Atalanta – Team News, Lineups & Predictions

Juventus_Atalanta_Preview.jpg

One of the most exciting match-ups of the weekend pits Juventus and Atalanta at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday late afternoon. Both sides have stuttered in recent weeks, falling behind their seasonal goals.

Juventus’ Scudetto hopes are dead in the water after conceding a late penalty in a 2-1 defeat at Napoli last Sunday. With Inter moving 15 points clear at the table’s summit, another winless outing would be detrimental to the hosts’ bid to breathe some life into a nearly-lost title race.

However, Massimiliano Allegri’s men have underperformed since the start of February. They’ve only won once in their last six league games (D2, L3). On a positive note, the lone success in that sequence came on home soil, courtesy of a last-gasp 3-2 win against Frosinone.

That victory made Allegri the first manager in Serie A history to hit a 1,000-point landmark. But there’s a feeling Juventus fans can’t care less about the Italian’s personal achievements amidst a faltering title quest. Atalanta could put those hopes to bed this Sunday. ..............

Match Preview

Juventus

Allegri’s lads have blown hot and cold across their last three home league outings (W1, D1, L1). However, you’d need to go back to March 2018 for the last time Juventus celebrated a home victory against Atalanta in Serie A. Since then, they’ve gone winless in five top-flight H2Hs in Turin (D4, L1).

But there’s a reason for optimism. Despite Allegri’s reputation as a defensive-minded coach, Juventus have netted 3+ goals in four of their last six home games across all competitions (W4, D1, L1). Regardless of those impressive numbers, conceding first would be fatal for Bianconeri.

Juventus have only won one of the seven league matches after falling behind 1-0 this season (W1, D2, L5). Allegri prefers to win without conceding, but that could be a tall order against Atalanta.

Atalanta

.............

Atalanta’s form woes on the road stretch back to November, as evidenced by only one win from their last seven away league matches (D3, L3). Defensive frailties saw them fail to keep a clean sheet in that sequence, putting an emphasis on packing a punch. .............

Juventus vs Atalanta Potential Lineups

Juventus (3-5-2): Wojciech Szczesny; Federico Gatti, Gleison Bremer, Danilo; Andrea Cambiaso, Fabio Miretti, Manuel Locatelli, Weston McKennie, Filip Kostic; Federico Chiesa, Akradiusz Milik.

Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Marco Carnesecchi; Giorgio Scalvini, Berat Djimsiti, Sead Kolasinac; Davide Zappacosta, Marten De Roon, Ederson, Matteo Ruggeri; Teun Koopmeiners; Ademola Lookman, Charles De Ketelaere.

Juventus vs Atalanta Prediction

The stakes are high for Atalanta. Another blip would throw their top-four quest into further doubt. Juventus are not in a must-win situation, but they are desperate to overcome a rough patch and make amends for last weekend’s disappointment in Naples.

Without in-form Vlahovic, it’ll be challenging. However, Atalanta’s form doesn’t inspire much confidence either. As such, we expect a share of the spoils.

Prediction: Draw

Juventus vs Atalanta: Preview and Prediction

Kijk Juventus - Atalanta Live Stream | DAZN BE

Juventus will aim to cling to their fading title hopes and cannot afford another defeat as they take on top-four-chasing Atalanta.

Massimiliano Allegri would be scratching his head over what happened in the past few weeks as he saw his side fade away from the title race bit by bit. A run of one win from six has put the brakes on their challenge for the Scudetto, as Inter Milan has raced away to a 15-point gap heading into the weekend. Up next for Juventus are a tough test in Atalanta.

While Inter Milan have been relentless in their chase, local rivals AC Milan have taken due advantage of Juventus’s downfall to chase them down for the second spot. Should AC Milan win their clash tomorrow against Empoli, the Bianconeri will kick off their game against Atalanta in the third spot. In addition, should Simone Inzaghi’s men claim a victory over Bologna, they will have opened up an 18-point gap on Allegri’s side. ..............

Gian Piero Gasperini will take account of Juventus’s dismal form and will want to take full advantage of the situation to continue their climb towards the fourth spot. An unbeaten run of eight games in the league was halted by champions-elect Inter Milan, after which they suffered another loss to top-four rival Bologna. .............

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

Massimiliano Allegri will have a selection headache as he continues to miss several of his crucial first-team stars. After the defeat at Napoli, the Juventus boss lost Carlos Alcaraz due to a muscle problem. At the same time, Dusan Vlahovic will miss the Atalanta clash through a suspension after picking a yellow last weekend.

With Alcaraz absent, he joins Adrien Rabiot and Weston McKennie on the sidelines, which is a big problem for Allegri and his midfield selection. Fabio Miretti will keep his place besides Manuel Locatelli on the right-hand side of the midfield three, while Andrea Cambiaso might come in on the left-hand side.

He will then vacate his wing-back role for Timothy Weah, while Filip Kostic seems like the best fit for the left flank. At the back, Daniele Rugani will continue to play in the back three alongside Gleison Bremer and Danilo.

With Vlahovic absent, Arkadiusz Milik will likely take his spot, as Allegri might prefer his experience over the youth of Kenan Yildiz. The latter may only find a place on the bench, as Federico Chiesa continued with his good form up front. That goal against Napoli will keep him in the starting lineup.

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Szczesny; Rugani, Bremer, Danilo; Weah, Cambiaso, Locatelli, Miretti, Kostic; Milik, Chiesa

wpB1zy6a0vD2298nlj5w.png

Atalanta

Unlike Massimiliano Allegri, Gian Piero Gasperini has no significant injury-related absentees, as 34-year-old centre-back Jose Luis Palomino is the only one missing out. In addition, Swedish wing-back Emil Holm will also miss out following his fifth booking of the season, and he must serve a one-game suspension.

Meanwhile, Teun Koopmeiners, Charles De Ketelaere and Giorgio Scalvini should return to the starting lineup after only playing as substitutes in midweek against Sporting CP. .............

Probable Lineup (3-4-1-2): Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Djimsiti, Kolasinac; Zappacosta, De Roon, Ederson, Ruggeri; Koopmeiners; Lookman, De Ketelaere

Ia56rEPjPsxBNf4CvZ2Y.png

Key Stats

  • Juventus are undefeated in all competitions in 35 of their last 38 matches against Atalanta.
  • Juventus have kept a clean sheet in their last three matches against Atalanta in all competitions.
  • Juventus have one victory in their last 6 Serie A games.
  • After an eight-game unbeaten run, Atalanta lost their last two games in Serie A.
  • In clashes between the top seven in Serie A, only Roma have picked up fewer points than Atalanta.

Player to Watch

Federico Chiesa

Last weekend, Vlahovic missed some glorious chances that would have essentially secured the three points for Juventus, and his absence would have put more pressure on their attackers, particularly Chiesa. The winger, who continues to march towards his best form, did himself good with that goal against Napoli. .............

Prediction

Juventus 1-1 Atalanta

Both these teams are coming into this clash looking for a victory to end their recent slump. These are also sides under pressure to achieve their respective objectives for the season, with Atalanta desperate to get back into the top four.

Looking at both their current form, it is difficult to pinpoint a favourite to take three points, although both have been dreadful in their defence over the last few games. Without giving either the benefit of the doubt, this game can end in a draw, albeit being a low-scoring affair.

Juventus vs. Atalanta match preview

Another important game has arrived on the schedule — which will be a pretty consistent theme the rest of the 2023-24 season.

Juventus / Atalanta : avant match et compositions probables |Juventus-fr.com

We are closing in on the portion of the Serie A schedule were you only need a set of hands to count how many games remain. As we sit in the second weekend of March, Juventus have 11 league fixtures remaining. And of those 11, it’s not like a lot of them are against the level of competition in which much of January and February had on the docket. ..............

That means, no matter what form Juve are currently in, there’s virtually important matchups from here on out until April showers turn into May flowers.

We saw it last weekend in Naples — which didn’t end all that well on a multitude of levels. And we’re about to see it again this weekend as Juventus return home to the Allianz Stadium hoping that a little home cookin’ will be the thing that hopefully gets them back on the right track when they face Atalanta on Sunday evening. They will, however, have to do it without their leading goal scorer since Dusan Vlahovic is suspended due to yellow card accumulation as well as the ongoing numbers crunch in midfield, even though it’s alleviated slightly with the return of one of Juve’s two injured starting midfielders.

Regardless of who actually is available and who isn’t, the last six games Max Allegri’s squad has played have not been very good at all. Like, the kind of one-win-in-the-last-six-games kind of not very good — a streak that not really anybody saw coming after a month of January that involved lots of goals and lots of winning in Serie A and the Coppa Italia. .............

“It will not be a decisive game tomorrow,” Allegri said, “but still important. Now the points start to weigh that bit more and because Atalanta are also in the running for a top-four finish.” .............

Atalanta enter Sunday a point behind fifth-place Roma, who are certainly building positive momentum since the appointment of Daniele De Rossi.

By the time they head out for their pre-game warmup routine, Juventus will know what AC Milan — who are currently a point behind the Bianconeri in third place — will have done against a resurgent Empoli. (Yeah, you know the same team Juve dropped points against to kick off this entire six-game run of absolute disappointment.) That means, any one of the three possibilities are on the table:

  • Juventus remain in second and have a chance to extend their lead over Milan.
  • Juventus are even with Milan on points.
  • Juventus fall down to third and have to win to ensure things go back to how they were to begin the weekend.

Considering that Juve and Atalanta have played out a draw in nine of their last 14 meetings, it’s not like three points is going to be easy to come by no matter what kind of form either team is currently in. Atalanta has proven to be a team that has given Juventus plenty of issues for the better part of the last decade as they’ve become a team that consistently threatens or actually breaks into the top four. .............

TEAM NEWS

  • Dusan Vlahovic will be watching from the stands as he serves a one-game suspension after picking up a yellow card in last weekend’s loss to Napoli.
  • The injury list has gained one name in Carlos Alcaraz after he picked up a hamstring injury in training this week while seeing a couple depart, with Weston McKennie and Moise Kean now available to play again, according to Allegri.
  • Mattia De Sciglio, Mattia Perin and Adrien Rabiot are also still out injured. Allegri said he’s hoping Rabiot will be back in the squad within the next week if all goes according to plan.
  • McKennie will play from the start, per Allegri.
  • Kean is still working toward having more minutes in his legs, but will likely be coming off the bench against Atalanta. “He’ll be very useful between now and the end of the season,” Allegri added.
  • With McKennie set to return to the starting and Andrea Cambiaso’s position much more settled compared to this time last week, that likely means the only big decision Allegri has to make in midfield is whether to give Samuel Iling-Junior his second straight start or bring Filip Kostic back into the team after his DNP against Napoli.

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

As much as a midfielder could very well make sense here, there’s also the simple fact that Juventus are going to be without their leading scorer in an important game.

Therefore, let’s talk about the guy who will be stepping in for Mr. Vlahovic.

Arkadiusz Milik of Juventus FC gestures at the end of the...

Arek Milik has had quite an interesting go of things ever since scoring a hat trick in the Coppa Italia two months ago. He has played in seven games, but only started two of them. One of those starts involved him getting sent off less than 20 minutes in against Empoli, a game which started Juve’s horrid run of form in February even though it technically wasn’t in February. .............

For a player who appeared in 27 league games last season, he started 17. This season, he’s played 25 times in Serie A ... and started just five games.

In those subsequent seven appearances, the number of goals he’s scored rhymes with “hero.” .............

Milik hasn’t started a game in about a month, so it’s really hard to say where he’s at. We know that Federico Chiesa will be looking to build off his positive (and goal-scoring) showing against Napoli, but it’s not like the Chiesa-Milik combo has played together much at all this season. .............

Juventus 2-2 Atalanta: Koop stalls Bianconeri

Teun-Koopmeiners-Juventus-Atalanta.jpg

Juventus dropped down to third place behind Milan after a Teun Koopmeiners brace gave Atalanta a point, cancelling out the Andrea Cambiaso and Arek Milik comeback. ..............

Atalanta took the lead with an intelligent free kick routine, as Mario Pasalic rolled it across for Teun Koopmeiners to sweep in first-time with the inside of the left foot from just inside the penalty area. ..............

Chiesa won back possession inside his own half, found McKennie for the American’s through ball, as Cambiaso toe-poked it past the on-rushing Carnesecchi.

Cambiaso was eager for another and fired over after a corner, then Juve turned it around completely moments later.

It was another McKennie assist, this time using his chest to cushion a Samuel Iling-Junior cross from the left, Milik let it bounce and thumped in on the half-volley from 12 yards. It was his first Serie A goal in five months. ..............

However, Atalanta got back on level terms too, as Berat Djimsiti’s slide-rule pass released Koopmeiners to sweep past Szczesny.

It remained wide open with both teams going for it, but in stoppages Moise Kean and Federico Gatti both went for the same header on a Chiesa cross.

Juventus 2-2 Atalanta

Koopmeiners 35, 75 (A), Cambiaso 66 (J), Milik 70 (J)

Juventus drop points against Atalanta as poor run continues

Player Ratings: Juventus 2-2 Atalanta, double McKennie assist, Koop justifies Man Utd interest - Football Italia

Juventus entered the game with the clear understanding that they needed a victory, though they knew it wouldn’t be an easy task. The early exchanges saw both teams having their moments, with Atalanta missing a chance from the first corner, and Juventus launching a counterattack that was thwarted. ..............

At the 35th-minute mark, Atalanta took the lead with a well-executed training ground routine from a free-kick, and Juventus target Teun Koopmeiners found the net. Gianluca Scamacca, used as a decoy in the free-kick routine, caused problems for the Juventus defence.

At halftime, Juventus regrouped to re-strategise, but Atalanta continued to look threatening in the second half, with Scamacca missing a chance from a fine team move. Juventus then had a brief spell of dominance, creating two good chances that Chiesa failed to convert.

In the 66th minute, Andrea Cambiaso scored a wonderful team goal for Juventus, followed by Arkadiusz Milik extending their lead three minutes later after an assist from Weston McKennie and a fine cross from Samuel Iling-Junior.

However, Atalanta made a comeback as Koopmeiners scored his second goal, and Juventus allowed them back into the game. Despite attempts to secure a late victory, including substitutions bringing on Moise Kean and Hans Nicolussi Caviglia, Juventus was unable to find the winner. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with Atalanta defending well against Juventus’ late pressure.

Juventus Player Ratings vs Atalanta: McKennie Assists Only Worth a Draw

Weston McKennie is back with a bang! USMNT star provides two brilliant assists on return from injury - but sloppy Juventus settle for draw with Atalanta | Goal.com US

Juventus (3-5-2)

Wojciech Szczesny – 6

The Pole had little hope of saving either goal but did well to parry away a shot from Gianluca Scamacca while at full stretch.

Federico Gatti – 6

 ..............

Gleison Bremer – 5.5

For once, the former Torino man struggled in the physical duel after finding a formidable match in Scamacca. Gave away a freekick with a challenge on the Atalanta striker which culminated in the opener.

Danilo – 6

The Juventus captain made some timely interventions at the back but wasn’t always productive on the ball.

Andrea Cambiaso – 7

The Genoa youth product is becoming a protagonist for the Bianconeri. Combined well with his teammates and finished off a slick team play with a toe-poked finish.

Weston McKennie – 7

The American made a timely return from injury to lift the Juventus midfield from its shambles. Ran all over the pitch and inspired the short-lived comeback with two assists. He picked up Cambiaso’s run with a clever through ball on the first occasion and chested the ball down to Milik on the second.

Manuel Locatelli – 5.5

 ..............

Fabio Miretti – 5

 ..............

Samuel Iling-Junior – 6

It wasn’t the Englishman’s most impressive display, but he stimulated the second Juventus goal with a sublime cross with his weaker right foot.

Arkadiusz Milik – 7

A professional display from the Polish striker who filled in well for the suspended Dusan Vlahovic. Linked up well with his teammates and scored a half-volley that he thought might be the winner for Juventus.

Federico Chiesa – 6.5

He wasn’t quite as lively as he was against Napoli, but the Italian star remains the main source of danger for Massimiliano Allegri’s side. He couldn’t find the back of the net as his two angled shots went wide, but he instigated the equalizer almost out of nothing by winning back possession and launching a brilliant run.

Substitutes

Hans Nicolussi Caviglia – 5.5

A slight upgrade on Miretti but he hardly delivered anything noteworthy.

Moise Kean – 6

The Italian striker made his return following a lengthy absence and chased every ball, but squandered an inviting cross by wrestling with his Juventus teammate Gatti.

Alex Sandro – N/A

Timothy Weah – N/A

Kenan Yildiz – N/A

Tacchinardi insists they have mentally collapsed

Inter Ngegas, Juventus kok Malah Memble

Former Juventus star Alessio Tacchinardi admits that the Bianconeri have experienced a mental collapse after dropping from the top of the Serie A table to the third spot.

Juve had been one of the top two sides in the league for several weeks as Max Allegri’s men aimed to surprise everyone by clinching the league title.

However, in a matter of weeks, their performance has deteriorated significantly, leading them to now occupy the third position in the standings. ............

Having watched them collapse in the last few weeks, Tacchinardi said:

“Juve got lost on their own, in the decisive moment of the season. When they had to accelerate they nailed it. Too much pressure, perhaps, but they could very well have remained at 6 points from league leaders Inter. Now yes, the team has collapsed mentally. A real disappointment, because it means that the players are not ready to win, they haven’t been able to make the leap in quality.” ............

Juventus vs Genoa: Preview

Juventus will host Genoa on Serie A Matchday 29 and both sides have struggled to win in recent weeks. Will any of these two teams be able to break their drought in this encounter?

Juventus vs Genoa Prediction and Betting Tips

Juventus will host Genoa at the Allianz Stadium on Serie A Matchday 29 in a match featuring two teams that are struggling to win.

The Bianconeri have won once in seven matches, a fortuitous 3-2 win against Frosinone on Matchday 26, and after drawing 2-2 against Atalanta in their previous game, they have dropped to third in the table with 58 points, one point behind AC Milan. ............

It would take a calamitous collapse for Juventus to miss out on Champions League qualification at this stage while Genoa look very unlikely to be dragged into a relegation battle. Due to both teams being unable to collect victories in recent weeks, this match will probably have the makings of a stalemate. ............

Juventus vs Genoa: Predicted line-ups

Juventus will miss Carlos Alcaraz due to an injury and Adrien Rabiot is not expected to make his return in this match. Dusan Vlahovic will return from his ban and should play alongside Federico Chiesa in attack. At left wing-back, Samuel Iling-Junior could start ahead of Filip Kostic. ............

Juventus predicted XI vs Genoa (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Miretti, Iling-Junior; Chiesa, Vlahovic

Genoa predicted XI vs Juventus (3-5-2): Martinez; De Winter, Bani, Vasquez; Frendrup, Messias, Badelj, Malinovskyi, Spence; Retegui, Gudmundsson ............

Adrien Rabiot returns to full training, will be good to go against Genoa

The Frenchman has missed the last couple of weeks thanks to a dislocated toe.

Adrien Rabiot of Juventus FC looks on during warm up prior...

The toe is good to go, it seems.

That means Juventus’ midfield depth crunch is very much in better shape than it was a few weeks ago when we were wondering how the heck Max Allegri was going to get through the next few weeks.

After missing the last two games due to a dislocated toe he suffered against Frosinone late last month, midfielder Adrien Rabiot returned to full training Friday and is all set to return to the starting lineup when Juventus faces Genoa during Sunday’s lunchtime kickoff at the Allianz Stadium. Rabiot was one of two midfielders to get hurt in the win over Frosinone nearly three weeks ago — what has proven to be Juve’s only win over the past seven games — and suddenly forcing Allegri to work with players who were second- or third-string (or not even playing in Italy) choices when the season began.

But now with both Weston McKennie and Rabiot back in the fold, the crunch has thankfully eased to the point where January signee Carlos Alcaraz is currently the only Juve midfield out due to injury.

Now with Rabiot healthy again, Allegri will have the midfield that he has been using for much of the 2023-24 season, with the Frenchman and McKennie playing on either side of Manuel Locatelli. Those three players are all in the top six of minutes played for Juventus this season. ............

Genoa fans boycott their match against Juventus for two reasons

GENOA ULTRAS - BEST MOMENTS - YouTube

Genoa fans are set to boycott their match against Juventus this weekend as the Bianconeri look to get back to winning. Genoa has a strong Ultra who take their support with them wherever the team goes to play. Their players will want to feed off their energy any time, and that will be helpful as they face Juve.

However, their Ultras have decided to boycott the game between both clubs this weekend. Firstly, they think the Bianconeri’s away ticket is overpriced and not worth an investment, even if it means not supporting their team for the fixture. Secondly, Juve has banned the use of banners by opposition supporters’ groups, which the visitors do not think makes sense.

They will miss the game to drive home the points, and only a few red and blue supporters are expected at the Allianz Stadium for the match. ............

Preview: Juventus vs. Genoa - prediction, team news, lineups

Juventus vs Genoa: Match preview - Juventus

Having taken just six points from seven Serie A matches, ailing Juventus have lost their grip on second spot in the standings ahead of Sunday's clash with Genoa.

While the Bianconeri let a lead slip against Atalanta BC last time out, their visitors almost rescued a point at home to Monza but were ultimately left empty-handed.

Match preview

Once in the running for their first Scudetto in four years, a recent nosedive has left Juventus trailing league leaders Inter Milan by 17 points - and last week's events allowed AC Milan to overtake them in second place.

Despite fighting back from behind to lead 2-1, through goals from Andrea Cambiaso and Arkadiusz Milik, reported Juve transfer target Teun Koopmeiners then completed his brace to help Atalanta snatch a draw; meanwhile, Milan scraped past Empoli.

In the process of winning just one of their last seven Serie A fixtures, Max Allegri's men have been unusually open at the back, and the former clean-sheet specialists last kept any opponent goalless back in late January.

The Bianconeri have conceded twice in each of their last four league matches - the last time they did so for five games straight was more than 60 years ago - and only four teams have earned fewer points since the end of January.

Allegri's future is still to be decided, and with several capable managers on the market this summer, his second spell in Turin is not sure to continue past the end of the season. ............

Team News

Juventus' Adrien Rabiot celebrates scoring their second goal on February 17, 2024© Reuters

As Adrien Rabiot and reserve goalkeeper Mattia Perin returned to training this week, Max Allegri could have both at his disposal on Sunday afternoon.

After recovering from a shoulder injury to play a major role last week, only Milan's Olivier Giroud has laid on more assists than Weston McKennie (seven) in Serie A this season - the American has now set up four of Juve's last six league goals and will start in midfield.

Meanwhile, up front, Dusan Vlahovic is back from suspension so should displace Arkadiusz Milik. Since December's game against Genoa at Marassi, Vlahovic has scored in each of his last seven games against teams inside the bottom half of the Serie A standings, netting 10 goals in total. ............

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Iling-Junior; Chiesa, Vlahovic

Genoa possible starting lineup:
Martinez; De Winter, Bani, Vasquez; Frendrup, Messias, Badelj, Malinovskyi, Spence; Gudmundsson; Retegui

We say: Juventus 1-0 Genoa

Juventus can stop their slump by edging to a narrow win, as Genoa are less of a force on the road. Having averaged under a goal per game away from home, the Grifone may not be able to take full advantage of Juve's defensive woes.

Juventus drops to 18th in the latest UEFA rankings

Juventus - YouTube

Juventus’ non-participation in European competitions this season has affected their UEFA rankings, and they are close to being knocked out of the top 20.

Max Allegri’s men were banned from European competitions this season, even though they originally made the top four in Italy and have been playing just domestic football.

In their absence, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Lazio, and Napoli represented Serie A in the Champions League.

However, Juve remains one of the biggest clubs in the world and has qualified for the Club World Cup for 2025.

But they are slipping out of the top 20 in the UEFA rankings, they ranked 18th in the latest UEFA standings. ............

Juventus vs Genoa: Preview and Prediction

Juventus vs Genoa Prediction - Serie A - 17/03/2024

Juventus will be desperate to return to winning ways when they welcome Genoa to the Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

The 2023/24 Serie A season has resumed this week with Matchday 29. Sunday will bring us five matches before we pause for the international break. And the action on the day will kick off at the Allianz Stadium, where a struggling Juventus will host Genoa.

Juventus had seemingly overcome the issues of recent seasons in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign. The Bianconeri looked like the best bet to challenge Inter Milan for the Serie A title, especially considering they did not have any European commitments. But they have won only one of their last seven games to fall to third on the table, a point behind AC Milan, with Bologna only four points behind. ............

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

Massimiliano Allegri has greeted several positive updates on the team news front ahead of his side’s latest fixture. Against Genoa on Sunday, the Juventus manager will be bereft of the services of four first-team players.

The Italian tactician has Dusan Vlahovic back from a suspension after he missed last weekend’s game against Atalanta. In addition, Mattia Perin, Mattia De Sciglio and Adrien Rabiot have resumed this week and should be in the matchday squad on Sunday.

So, Carlos Alcaraz (hamstring) is the only player in the treatment room.

Wojciech Szczesny should take his spot between the sticks, with Juventus lining up in a 3-5-2 formation in front of him against Genoa. The central defensive unit should feature Federico Gatti, Gleison Bremer, and Danilo. Meanwhile, Andrea Cambiaso and Samuel Iling-Junior will likely start as the two wing-backs.

As for the midfield unit, the fit-again Rabiot should feature, joining Manuel Locatelli and Weston McKennie in the middle of the park. The latter will provide the creative spark from the central areas. Finally, Federico Chiesa and Vlahovic should be the two attackers for the home side.

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Iling-Junior; Chiesa, Vlahovic

Genoa

............

Probable Lineup (3-5-1-1): Martinez; De Winter, Bani, Vasquez; Frendrup, Messias, Badelj, Malinovskyi, Spence; Gudmundsson; Retegui

Key Stats

  • Genoa are unbeaten in their last two Serie A games against Juventus (W1 D1), last going without a defeat longer in the competition between February 1990 and October 1991 (four matches).
  • After playing out a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture, Juventus and Genoa can end up with two stalemates in the same Serie A campaign for only the third time.
  • Juventus are unbeaten in their last 19 home games against Genoa in Serie A (W15 D4), conceding an average of only 0.6 goals per game across the period while keeping ten clean sheets.
  • Juventus have managed only six points in their last seven Serie A games (W1 D3 L3), with only four teams managing fewer points than them during this period.
  • Genoa have lost their last two Serie A games and can record three successive defeats for the first time this season. Their three defeats in their most recent five league matches are the same as in their previous 14 (W5 D6).

Player to Watch

Dusan Vlahovic

Amid a sub-par run of form, scoring multiple goals to blow their opponents away has been one of the issues for the hosts. While Juventus’s defensive frailties have become a talking point, they also need more consistency from those in front of the backline. But that is not the case with Dusan Vlahovic.

The Serb has been in decent touch in recent outings, amassing nine goals and one assist in his last eight Serie A outings. Juventus missed Vlahovic last weekend against Atalanta and will be glad to have him back from a suspension. Meanwhile, the former Fiorentina striker will be eager to stamp his authority and guide his team to a much-needed win.

Prediction

Juventus 1-1 Genoa

Sunday’s early match features two teams that have been among the worst sides on form in the last few weeks. Juventus and Genoa have only one win in their most recent six matches, making this a must-win clash for them.

But with their defensive frailties holding them back, Juventus and Genoa will endure another frustrating result this weekend. The Hard Tackle predicts a 1-1 draw between the two teams, adding to the pressure on Massimiliano Allegri.

Allegri: Football is not an exact science

Coach’s comments as Juventus prepare to take on Genoa

Allegri: “We'll need a different performance” - Juventus

Juventus are slipping and sliding furiously now with only one win in the last seven games, a run that has not only allowed the consistent Inter Milan to pretty much run away with the Scudetto, but now AC Milan have also made up ground on the Bianconeri and sit ahead of them with ten rounds to go.

With a game against 12th placed Genoa on the cards, coach Massimiliano Allegri gave an update on the squad fitness.

“We have had a good week of work. We’re aware of the moment we’re going through. We worked well, yesterday we stayed in Continassa because we know the importance of the match.

“We lost Arkadiusz Milik, who had a small problem, and we’ll evaluate him after the break. Mattia Perin, Mattia De Sciglio and Adrien Rabiot return.”

“I spoke with the team and together we decided to stay at Continassa. We must resume the work that we missed this month. We know that we have objectives to achieve such as the Champions League and the semi-final of the Coppa Italia.” ............

With Juventus already qualified for the Club World Cup to be held in the summer of 2025, would that be a reason for him to stay and see out the last year of his contract?

“I believe it’s the result of the work done by the club in recent years. I have a year left on my contract, I’m very calm. We are and must be focused on this year’s objectives.

“At the moment we’ve qualified for the Club World Cup, a wonderful adventure, because it’s a new competition with great teams and it’ll be nice.

“The objectives must be achieved, playing in the Champions League next year. To do this we need to get to May 25th.” ............

“Paradoxically in the last few games we have conceded few chances, but we have conceded many goals. We must continue to improve and work, but above all pay more attention to the team and not to individual players.

“Football is not an exact science. There were matches where we never conceded goals. We need to stay more organized and be more compact when we don’t have the ball. When we are together, we have more time to do work and watch individual videos.” ............

Why does Kenan Yildiz look to have been demoted?

“Absolutely nothing. In my opinion he was in decline a bit and Federico Chiesa was in good shape. He is fine now and is a player who will have an important future, but he must be left to grow in peace and without responsibility.”

Juventus vs. Genoa match preview

Juventus have one more game before the March international break to try and actually win a game.

Kijk Juventus - Genoa Live Stream | DAZN BE

As they take the field Sunday afternoon, Juventus will be 90 or so minutes away from their first international break of 2024. It has been quite the interesting 3 12 months of the new year — first for very good and encouraging reasons, but for the seven or eight weeks for the exact opposite of that. Considering the form that they are on, it’s probably a much-needed international break that is on the immediate horizon. ............

Either way, for the second time in a month, Juventus will be one half of the Serie A lunchtime kickoff. It just so happens that first one, late last month, was the only win that Max Allegri’s squad has recorded in the last seven games, a 3-2 victory over Frosinone which was far from what you would consider “vintage” or “reassuring” based on how they played both before and after. This Sunday’s opponent, 12th-place Genoa, just so happens to be one of the few teams to take points off Juventus when they were in much better form, and very much have things of importance in their own right as they try to lock up a spot in Serie A next season and try to put an end to a run of one win the last six games.

That’s right, people. We have a team that has won one game in their last seven outings hosting a team that has won just once in their last six games.

Over the last six games, Juventus and Genoa have combined to earn ... 10 points. That is less than Serie A heavyweights who go by the name of Monza have earned all on their own over that same six-game span. That’s also less than the two teams in front of Juventus in the Serie A standings, Inter Milan and AC Milan, as well as two of the teams chasing them for a Champions League spot, Bologna and Roma, have earned, too. ............

Juve coaches and players alike have recognized the delicate nature of this moment, electing to go into a mini ritiro of sorts on Friday, a day earlier than usual for home games. The only way to know if that move actually pays off will be by how they play. And considering just how poor the results have been of late, one might simply be hoping that the final whistle sounds and three points are secured more than anything.

Of Juve’s last 10 remaining games this season, Genoa are the second-lowest ranked team on the schedule. Things were never going to be simple for Allegri’s squad, so now that you add in the kind of form that you see from relegation battlers rather than a team that still finds itself in the top four, it is a total mystery as to what this team will be able to do down the final stretch.

But, like I said, it’s not like Genoa are in much better form over the last six games. So maybe Juventus are catching Alberto Gilardino’s side at the right time. You could also say that Genoa are certainly catching Juve at the right time — which, considering how valuable points are at this juncture of the season, is not the greatest development. With Bologna winning on Friday night, the gap between third place and fourth is down to all of four points. Roma, under Daniele De Rossi, suddenly look like a team that is going to be tough to slow down as they face 19th-place Sassuolo on Sunday. ............

TEAM NEWS

  • Adrien Rabiot is the biggest name of those who are back in the squad after their respective injury absence both short and much, much longer. Although Allegri admitted that Rabiot “doesn’t have 90 minutes in the tank just yet,” the Frenchman is expected to be in the starting lineup on Sunday afternoon.
  • MATTIA DE SCIGLIO BACK!
  • That’s right, folks — the Italian fullback who hasn’t been called up all season is back in the matchday squad as he is just one more step away from completing his comeback from major knee surgery. De Sciglio last appeared in a game on May 5, 2023, against Lecce before being forced out after 31 minutes after he tore his ACL in his right knee.
  • Another guy named Mattia, backup goalkeeper Mattia Perin, is also back in the squad after returning to full training earlier in the week. Perin missed the last five games with a knee injury he picked up in training.
  • The only Juventus player who will miss Genoa’s trip to Turin is Carlos Alcaraz.
  • Or so we thought. Allegri announced at his pre-match press conference that Arek Milik will miss Sunday’s game with an undisclosed injury. Milik will be re-evaluated after the international break.
  • The other two players who will not face Genoa are suspended: Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba.
  • Dusan Vlahovic is back in the squad after serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation last weekend against Atalanta. Vlahovic, who has a team-best 15 goals this season, is expected to start alongside Federico Chiesa up front on Sunday.
  • Despite the recent struggles, Allegri said the team has “had a good week” in training and that the team going into ritiro is a sign that they understand what needs to be done to try and right the ship.

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

Juventus’ midfield has been a little less French the last couple of weeks.

Hellas Verona FC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

As much as Fabio Miretti has filled in admirably for Rabiot, it’s pretty clear that Juventus’ midfield has missed their vice captain. And simply Juventus as a whole. Miretti may be talented, but Rabiot he is not, and the up-and-down nature of his play is still very much present. ............

Dusan Vlahovic’s red card sums up another poor Juventus performance

Juventus 0-0 Genoa (Mar 17, 2024) Game Analysis - ESPN

Juventus’s appalling run of form continued today after dropping two more points in a goalless draw against mid-table Genoa.

Juventus started the game with the struggling partnership of Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic after the Serbian returned to the team following suspension.

Genoa was hoping to become the latest club to steal points off Juve in Turin and started the game by keeping the home side at bay as much as they could. ............

However, even with Fabio Miretti playing deep at times, Juve never looked like scoring, as their attacking players lost the ball too easily too often.

Gatti eventually had a shot blocked as Juve became frustrated, and Danilo received the first yellow card of the game in the last noteworthy action before halftime.

At the start of the second half, Gatti had his third attempt of the game, and it seemed apparent a defender could be the first to score for them despite their star-studded attack.

Minutes later, Samuel Iling Junior clipped the post after coming on as a substitute as Juve tried to get the first goal of the match. That was the closest they had come to scoring all game.

Shortly after that, Vlahovic headed wide from a fine cross from Andrea Cambiaso as Juve pressed for a goal.

The introduction of Adrien Rabiot and Kenan Yildiz, among others, added more bite to the Juve attack, and it began to ask more questions of the Genoa defence. ............

Max Allegri made another change and brought on Tim Weah for Fabio Miretti, and Moise Kean came on for the impressive Cambiaso.

It was a change few expected, but Juve needed a goal at all costs now, and Kean had not scored all season. ............

Just when the perfect chance broke for Kean, the striker slammed it against the post, but it wouldn’t have counted as Vlahovic was offside in the build-up. That just showed how poor Kean’s luck has been all season.

Shortly afterwards, things went from bad to worse for Juve as Vlahovic was sent off for dissent after receiving two quick yellow cards.

That was the worst way for Juve to end the game, but the match ended with Juve failing to win again. At least they kept a clean sheet.

Journalist makes a strange claim about Juventus against Genoa

juventus-v-genoa1.jpeg

Juventus had a disappointing game today as they were held to a draw at home by Genoa. The men in black and white have seen their confidence take a hit due to a series of poor results in the last few weeks.

The game against Genoa was another opportunity for them to return to form and secure a victory. However, Juve couldn’t break through for the entirety of the game, which was disheartening to witness. ............

Journalist Gianfranco Teotino observed their struggles and insisted that the team displayed a lot of nervousness in the match.

He said:

“There was a lot of nervousness, not only on Vlahovic’s part, but also the other players exchanged heated words and expressed dissatisfaction with the substitutions. This only confirms the total uselessness of the withdrawal because it only made the most agitated team.

“The first half was really bad, with some improvement in the second half thanks to the substitutions. Iling seemed the most lively, but the team did not perform up to its potential. Some players on the pitch make you think whether I’m in the right position or not, and this issue has been going on for weeks. ............

Allegri insists Juventus result against Genoa does not worry him

Allegri loses his temper after Juventus draw against Genoa - Black & White & Read All Over

Max Allegri insists he is not a worried man despite his team’s draw against Genoa, which stretches their winless run.

Juve is on a downward spiral and could soon be embroiled in the race for the fourth spot in the league.

That would be shocking, considering they were at the top of the league standings just weeks ago. ............

Juve has lost the fear factor, and that should worry any manager when your team cannot defeat Genoa at this stage of the season.

However, after their game against the Griffin, Allegri was asked if he was worried, and he said:

“Today I am satisfied because I saw character, the team fought, they were involved in the match. The 0-0 is disappointing but this is a step forward towards the end of the season. I’m not worried, but we need to score points.” ............

“It’s too little” Andrea Barzagli reacts to Juventus draw with Genoa

barzagli.jpg

Former Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli has reacted to their dropped points against Genoa this afternoon, insisting that it is not good enough for a team like the Bianconeri.

Genoa came to Turin hoping to avoid defeat, and they achieved their aim as Juve laboured but could not break them down. ............

Barzagli did not enjoy what he watched and said:

“Juventus’ first half was worrying. I expected the Bianconeri to be more aggressive, but they played passively and didn’t involve their attackers. They had zero chances. In the second half, they started strong and the substitutions revolutionized their attack, but they only had chances towards the end. It’s too little for a team like this.” ............

Sacchi dissects Juventus: “A movie without a plot, hurt by the defeat to Inter”

Juventus 0 - Genoa 0: Delayed reaction and random observations - Black & White & Read All Over

Legendary manager Arrigo Sacchi analyzes the dire situation at Juventus which is seeing the club bleeding points.

The Bianconeri have only accumulated seven points from their last eight league fixtures. ............

“Juventus failed at home and received understandable boos from the supporters,” argued the 77-year-old.

“It must be said that Gilardino’s Genoa is a grumpy team to face. They have great team spirit combined with very strong motivations and physical qualities.” ............

“The Bianconeri have shown the limitations that have been holding them back for some time. If they have only earned seven points in the last eight games, there must be a reason. Or perhaps more than one.

“Watching the situation from the outside and without knowing the internal dynamics, Juve seems like a movie without a plot.

“There is no game plan, no logical thread that keeps all the elements connected.

“Playing football without a specific game plan is rather difficult. You have to rely on the individual qualities of the players and, consequently, on counterattacks.” ............

“I believe that the defeat suffered at San Siro against Inter had a significant influence on Juve’s path.

“The Bianconeri realized that they were not at the level of the Nerazzurri and therefore could not compete for the Scudetto. So yes, they are psychologically weakened.

“If they had had a game to support them, they probably would have clung to that, but having few ideas, the team ran into considerable problems.

“Allegri is an expert and pragmatic coach. Now it’s up to him to find a solution and try to chase second place in the standings.”

Updates on the conditions of Vlahovic and Milik – Kean set to start against Lazio

Moise Kean - Spelersprofiel 23/24 | Transfermarkt

Juventus will have to resort to the services of Moise Kean in their next encounter against Lazio due to their attacking crisis.

Arkadiusz Milik sustained an injury last week which ruled him out of action for several weeks, while Dusan Vlahovic will be serving a suspension after receiving a red card against Genoa.

Moreover, the 24-year-old picked up a knock that prompted his stay in Turin during the international break rather than joining the Serbian national team’s camp. ............

Vlahovic underwent personalized training, suggesting that his condition isn’t too serious.

On the other hand, Milik and Carlos Alcaraz are still on the recovery path.

Moreover, Kean will lead the line in the fixture against Lazio on the 30th of March at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Italian will be the only remaining centre-forward at Allegri’s disposal, with Milik injured and Vlahovic suspended.

He will link up with either Federico Chiesa or Kenan Yildiz up front. ............

Chiesa or Yildiz – Who will partner Kean in Lazio vs Juventus clash?

La Juve con Yildiz e Chiesa: ecco come giocherebbe. Due opzioni, una riscoperta e il retroscena | ilbianconero.com

Juventus coach Max Allegri will once again have to decide between Federico Chiesa and Kenan Yildiz for the upcoming clash against Lazio.

Following the international break, the Bianconeri will resume their campaign with a showdown against the Biancocelesti in the Italian capital.

Former Juventus defender Igor Tudor will be making his bow at the Olimpico Stadium after being appointed as a successor to Maurizio Sarri. ............

Dusan Vlahovic will be serving a one-match ban for the second time this month after losing his head in the final minutes against Genoa.

While Arkadiusz Milik is the Serbian’s designated replacement, the Pole is also out with an injury.

Therefore, Moise Kean will be making his first start since the turn of the year, as he’ll be the only centre-forward at Allgeri’s disposal next weekend.

But while that role sorted itself out, the manager still has the usual dilemma of picking between Chiesa and Yildiz for the second-striker position. ............

While the pecking order could still change between now and Saturday, Yildiz appears destined for the bench.

Nevertheless, the 18-year-old would still be looking to make an impact as a second-half substitute.
