For the last two years, Gigi Buffon has said that as long as his body allowed him to do so, then he would be taking part in the 2018 World Cup. And seeing as he turns 38 years old later this week, it's not exactly like Father Time is on San Gigi's side even though he continues to be the best of the best at a position where guys his age are usually backups or already retired. But the Juventus and Italy captain has finally set a date for when his illustrious and record-breaking career will come to an end. Whenever the Azzzurri do bow out of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the same will go for Buffon's time as a professional footballer, he announced on Monday. Buffon, courtesy of ESPN FC, said the following after he was presented with the Gianni Brera award for Sportsman of the Year: "Am I going to sign a new contract? If we manage to reach the World Cup in 2018 then I'll press on. "But after that ... I'll bring down the shutters." We don't have to get into the discussion about how massive a hole there is to fill right now because there's still a good amount of time before Buffon actually does retire. And that's probably a good thing seeing as Juventus now know when they'll need a replacement to try and fill Buffon's massively important shoes, but also it gives us time to prepare for the day we see Buffon finally take off his Puma gloves for the last time. At the age of 38, Buffon is still the gold standard for goalkeepers. People may freak out about what Manuel Neuer does or some other keeper in their mid- to late-20s, but Buffon is seemingly just as good as he was four, five, six, (fill in the blank here) years ago. His saves are still world-class worthy. His importance to the Juventus squad is still just as important as it was a decade ago. Or maybe it's even more, but that's for you all to argue. At least there's still two and a half years of calendar time to go before the final time we see Buffon play for Juventus gets here. May there be plenty of saves — but not too many because that means Juve still has a good defense — and a few more trophies raised before that day in Russia actually does arrive.

Against Roma on Sunday evening, Juventus proved they are indeed the team to beat, managing a 1-0 scoreline that not only keeps them in the hunt for domestic honours but widens the gap between them and the chasing pack. A match full of fouls and silly decisions, Juventus started well but failed to make the most of their chances as their opponent attempted to settle in. Defending in organised fashion despite the lack of genuine talent at the back, Roma worked immensely hard on hindering a Bianconeri side that has forgotten how to lose. Similar to Inter, Roma opted to demonstrate their physicality and targeted Paulo Dybala who struggled to make an impact when consistently thrown on to the floor. The Giallorossi may have defended with heart, but they created little in attack and allowed Juventus to grow into the game. Massimiliano Allegri's side struggled to offer a little unpredictability and seemingly ran out of ideas, attempting similar patterns of play over and over again. However, when a side boasts the technical brilliance of Paul Pogba and the clinical efficiency of Paulo Dybala, a goal is always possible. The Old Lady deserved the win for her desire to succeed coupled with the intensity of play ensured the 11th consecutive victory to strike fear into the heart of the rest of the competition. Player ratings Gianluigi Buffon, 6 -- Barring the one shot on target Roma had, Buffon has very little to do. A spectator for the most part, he never fails to remain concentrated on the job. Andrea Barzagli, 6 -- No amount of time spent away from the pitch seems to have an effect on the veteran defender for he is consistently excellent. Reliable and intelligent, he never risks anything at the back while his attacking third passes are pleasing to the eye. Leonardo Bonucci, 6 -- His geometric passes can be a thing of beauty while his leadership skills come in handy in such fiercely contested matches. Composed and confident. Giorgio Chiellini, 7 -- Again, Chiellini was the best defender on the night, labouring away to make the necessary challenges to secure the defence. Reading the game well and always on hand to rescue his teammates, he is the ever present warrior who muted Edin Dzeko. Stephan Lichtsteiner, 5 -- Not the greatest of evenings for the Swiss. He might always offer his teammates a solution for a pass but he failed to offer much going forward on this occasion. A dull performance. Sami Khedira, 6 -- A few missteps from the German on the night but he can be counted upon to always look forward, attempting to create chances while he offers balance to the squad, making the necessary runs to safeguard the defence. Claudio Marchisio, 6 -- Hindered from impacting the game as well as he does when in charge of the control room, his intelligence is still of great importance in a match in which he is required to understand what spaces he should occupy and where he must position himself. Defensively excellent on the night. Paul Pogba, 7 -- His assist was absolutely perfect and made up for a night in which he succumbed to poor decision making, especially towards the latter stage of the match. One always capable of a moment in magic, his understanding of the game is improving but he must be more composed when forced to play under pressure. Patrice Evra, 7 -- He missed his chances yet the Frenchman offered more than his Roman counterpart, placing himself in good decisions to maintain his team's attacking momentum. A reliable player who almost always makes the right decision, one hopes this won't be his last season as a Bianconero. Mario Mandzukic, 6 -- A man who puts the team before himself, the Croatian is relentless when it comes to fighting for his teammates. A player who defends from the top and never gives up on any ball, his desire is evident and appreciated. Paulo Dybala, 8 -- The Argentine suffered greatly to impose himself against a physical opponent who always sought to foul. Yet despite the difficult nature of the game and his wrong interpretation of the tactics in the first half, the youngster did not miss the opportunity to make his mark, scoring a wonderful goal to seal all three points. Substitutes Juan Cuadrado, 7 -- He immediately made an impact on he right when introduced as he looked to drive the team forward and take on the opponent. His cunning ability comes in handy as he knows how to win fouls in advantageous positions. The red-hot Argentine coolly met Paul Pogba's smart through ball and finished a rapid Juventus counter-attack with 13 minutes left, sealing his side's 11th straight win and leaving Roma hanging back among the also rans. Luciano Spalletti's side stay in fifth on 35 points, 10 behind second-placed Juve and 12 away from league leaders Napoli, and are now officially in a dogfight for third place and the final Champions League spot, from which they are six points away. However carry on as they are and even the Europa League will be a doubt. Roma have only won once and picked up a paltry nine points since November's international break, and will now be looking over their shoulders at AC Milan, Empoli, Sassuolo and Lazio, who are all within four points of the stalling Giallorossi. What will be frustrating for Spalletti is that his team didn't even play that badly on Sunday, but they just couldn't impose themselves on Juve. Roma did perfectly well to contain their opponents for 77 minutes, and after a rocky opening half an hour even managed to control the game for periods, but once Dybala slid home his 12th of the season they had no real response. Spalletti simply doesn't have anyone who is even near the Argentine's quality at his disposal in attack, and that is causing problems for the rest of the team. Roma have gone from being Serie A's top scorers to one of the most shot-shy sides in the league, scoring only 10 goals (and conceding 11) since beating Lazio in early November. Paulo Dybala notched his sixth goal in seven matches to bring Juve their 11th straight Serie A victory and keep their two point pressure behind league leaders Napoli. Paul Pogba made the assist for the decisive goal while Gianluigi Buffon remained undaunted in the dominant showing by the Bianconeri. Juventus Gianluigi Buffon – 6.5 – Untested - Only one save was necessary for the soon to be 38-year-old as Alessandro Florenzi tried his luck from distance but the keeper effortlessly caught the dipping ball. Andrea Barzagli – 7 – Adventurous - Pressed up high to help Lichtsteiner pile more pressure on Lucas Digne, and gave added passing options in doing so. In teaming up with Bonucci and Chiellini at the back the Giallorossi were helpless to break open any clear scoring chances Leonardo Bonucci – 7.5 – Stellar - Made sure to stop Roma’s linkage of play up the centre of the pitch by cutting out passes and lobbing balls forward with pin point accuracy. His ability to clean up any loose ball inside the area was unquestioned for 90 minutes. Giorgio Chiellini – 7 – Guardian - A fortress at the back to stop crosses coming in for Dzeko and was surprisingly fast to close down counter attacking runs by Florenzi up the flank. His clear dominance in the air proved to be a great asset amongst his defensive partners. Stephan Lichtsteiner – 6 – Quiet - Pressed up high but never seemed to inflict any scares on Roma or Lucas Digne in attack and was also found way offside on one buildup play. After some good defensive contributing early in the second half he was replaced by the livelier Juan Cuadrado. Sami Khedira – 6.5 – Versatile - Never put a foot wrong in a dominant first half showing with Juve. He bossed a crowded midfield with interceptions and easily nicked the ball off his opponents while also curling in crosses from out wide when able. Claudio Marchisio – 7.5 – Valuable - Very gifted with his one touch passes and marauding runs up the midfield with a dangerous juggling move in particular that forced Antonio Rudiger into a foul. Five tackles and two dribbles won throughout his 90 minutes show how well rounded his abilities are. Paul Pogba – 7.5 – Visionary - Made it very hard for Roma to take him off the ball with his pace and strength. While his two shot attempts were off the mark he made a series of jaw dropping passing plays that eventually resulted in an assist for Dybala. Patrice Evra – 7 – Impressive - Squandered two glorious back to back scoring chances after picking up possession alone inside the penalty area and was robbed from close range in the second half by Szczesny in the second half. Otherwise he was a constant threat for the visitors to gave plenty of creativity and services up the left flank for the Bianconeri. Unfortunately his yellow card means he will miss the next match with suspension. Paulo Dybala – 8 – Clinical - Showed outstanding control to bring down a long ball from Bonucci as chip Szczesny in the first half but was flagged for offside. While his free kick attempts were less effective on the day, his lethality in open play proved itself as he notched his sixth goal in seven Serie A games with an inch perfect shot in the 77th minute. Mario Mandzukic – 6.5 – Bruised - Worked hard to pick up passes up front and hold up play, but often found himself involved in fouls whether committing or drawing them as he ended up never managing to register an effort at goal. Substitutes Juan Cuadrado – 6.5 – Impactful - Filled in for Stephan Lichtsteiner and added a clear injection of life and movement up the right wing. His pace allowed him to nearly create a goalscoring chance as he chased down the ball and whipped in a cross from the byline. A shot on target of his own made his impact well noticed as he gave Roma added stress. Alvaro Morata – N/A Roma Wojciech Szczesny – 6.5 – Valiant - Did the best he could on one of his busiest nights of the season. His clean hands from a series of high strikes and effective positioning helped him stop the likes of Evra and Dybala to keep Roma’s hopes intact, but he was helpless to stop the Argentine’s well taken goal inside the penalty area. Konstantinos Manolas – 6.5 – Stressed - Had plenty to deal with the likes of Evra, Mandzukic, and Pogba testing his fortitude from his defensive area. Even though he survived plenty of scares with his strong tackling and outlet passes, he was guilty of indecision as he was left in between Pogba and Dybala for the decisive goal. Daniele De Rossi – 6.5 – Combative - Picked up his seventh yellow card of the season for a cynical foul on Mandzukic away from the ball in the first 10 minutes, but kept his composure for the remainder of the match to look relatively comfortable in defence until the eventual defeat. Antonio Rudiger – 6 – Rough - Started his match with a series of brutally committed fouls to be booked in the 14th minute. Eventually his focus arrived and he provided plenty of clearances and passes ahead but was left behind for Dybala’s deciding goal. Alessandro Florenzi – 6.5 – Active - Put in three shot attempts on the night but only lightly tested Buffon with one of them as he was guilty for throwing away one of Roma’s only positive chances near the goal. His determined runs up the flank were admirable but not enough to turn the match into his favour. Miralem Pjanic – 6.5 – Targeted - Hardly able to create as much danger in the middle of the park as Juventus were relentless in pressuring the Bosnian every time he picked up possession. A chance to equalize from one of his lethal free kick attempts was left begging as he fired his shot over the bar. William Vainqueur – 6.5 – Defensive - Made many passes horizontally to try and register some comfort for Roma’s passing game. Eventually his second half was a lot more rough as he went on to notch three fouls and three tackles before coming off in exchange for the experienced Seydou Keita. Radja Nainggolan – 6 – Frustrated - In a new trequartista role under Spaletti he was too often lost away from the ball and not able to create enough of a spark in attack. Two shots resulted in two blocked attempts as he also showed Roma’s frustration and picked up his seventh yellow of the season. Mohamed Salah – 6 – Missing - Virtually anonymous at times and never showed his capabilities to stretch out the pitch with his darting runs and dribbling moves. Despite Juve dominating the first half, there weren't too many moments of danger for Roma to deal with. Arguably the best chance of the half fell to Roma's Alessandro Florenzi, who skied an effort from an angle. Paulo Dybala struck the bar at the other end but was offside in the buildup anyway. The first half ended goalless. In the second half, both teams were less aggressive than in the first half. Both teams also lacked in clear chances—until Paul Pogba freed Dybala in the box with 10 minutes to go to score the only goal of the night. Here are all the winners and losers from the match. Winner: Paulo Dybala Paulo Dybala was the best player on the pitch in the first half, and he was the match-winner in the second half. Dybala showed invention, vision, a quality first touch and an ability to move to break down Roma's defence in the first 45 minutes, buzzing across the front line and dipping out to receive possession in space. The forward showed a real moment of quality to take down a high ball and lob the goalkeeper, even though he was denied by an offside flag and a crossbar. But there was no stopping him when he scored a left-footed shot late in the match. He had a superb performance again. Loser: Alessandro Florenzi Italy's national team starting winger at the Euros in all likelihood will be Alessandro Florenzi. He was picked in a wing-back role as his manager switched to a 3-5-2. It seems a role well-suited to Florenzi's strengths, but precious few of them were seen in this game; defensively he was caught on the inside several times by an ageing (and ultimately wasteful) Patrice Evra, gave possession away at the back and didn't do enough to keep the back line tight when under sustained pressure. In attack, he missed Roma's best chance with a swiped effort off target, and his delivery toward the front two was non-existent. To compound things, Florenzi was subbed off, possibly injured after a fall, in stoppage time. Winner: Giorgio Chiellini A total rock at the back for Juventus, Giorgio Chiellini had a very straightforward match to ensure his goalkeeper had next to nothing to do. Flanked by the returning Andrea Barzagli, Chiellini was extremely aggressive in making sure he reached the ball first whenever Roma pumped it forward in the second half. Chiellini defended in uncompromising fashion, leaving his team-mates at the back on cover duty—all in a simple evening's work. Chiellini was strong, timed his runs out of the back three well and at times passed intelligently into midfield. Losers: Mohamed Salah and Edin Dzeko Chiellini playing well aside, neither of Roma's front duo should be happy with their own work. After an early run or two, Mohamed Salah disappeared entirely from the match and was utterly anonymous in the second half, while Edin Dzeko was bossed aerially and never once threatened Gigi Buffon in goal for Juve. Neither forward have scored in the last eight games for Roma—Salah is actually nine without a goal—and certainly didn't look to have the understanding between them or the individual quality to get anywhere near to troubling Juventus on this occasion. Winner/Loser: Luciano Spalletti There are mixed feelings for new Roma boss Luciano Spalletti, so we'll award him both winner and loser tags. Three points from 57 vs. Juventus, per BT Sport's live coverage, shows his historical inability to get a result against Serie A's biggest modern club. This occasion proved no different by full time—but for a long stretch of the game, his 3-5-2 setup kept Juve at bay. The midfield also worked hard, and the defence was aggressive. Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny didn't have huge amounts of shots raining down on him, and it was a moment of brilliant play from two top talents which eventually opened Roma up. So there is certainly hope going forward into the second half of the season. That said, Roma's winless streak is now four games in the league, and they've taken just one win from 12 in all competitions. Almost everything they did was done well beforehand, then they got around the 18-yard box and it suddenly like they were on a different page. That's not something we had seen much of during Juve's 10-game Serie A winning streak. Then, just when it looked like a couple of points might be dropped in frustrating fashion, it all clicked. From one of the field to the other in 13 seconds Juventus went. And the result was something we've seen so many times over the past three or four months — Paulo Dybala racing to a corner of the field to celebrate a goal he just scored. It erased all of the previous difficulty in the final third from the previous 77 or so minutes. Just like that, Juventus went from 'attack, attack, attack' to defending a lead with everything they had. I guess this sentence that I typed a minute or two before Dybala scored his goal isn't exactly applicable anymore. Now we have to refer to it as an "11-game unbeaten streak" instead of "an 11-game winning streak." That just doesn't have the same kind of ring to it. We can thank Dybala for that. But think about what went into the goal, too. The tackle Patrice Evra made to win the ball back was one of the most memorable things I will take out of this game. The forward runs by both Paul Pogba and Sami Khedira were crucial. Pogba's Steve Nash-like no-look pass to Dybala for the assist will have a million views on Vine come tomorrow morning. It was just a beautiful team goal at the moment Juventus needed it. The winning streak is still there. It was stressful — probably because Juve's finishing was lacking more than Roma doing anything of real danger in front of goal. But Juventus have now gotten a little bit of payback — or as was the case on Sunday, a lot of it — against the team two clubs that beat them to open the 2015-16 season. Juve looked in disarray back then. They don't now. And thanks to their 22-year-old boy wonder from Argentina who looks like he should still be a freshman in high school, the wins just keep on coming. He probably won't play in all of the remaining 17 league games this season if Juve continue to compete on multiple fronts entering March and April, but Dybala is on pace to destroy the numbers he put up last season. And they said last season was the breakout year for Dybala. So what does it make this one? I said it on Twitter toward the very end of the first half, but I'll say it here, too: Dybala has reached the point where you just sit up in your seat and pay attention just a little bit more than you were whenever he's on the ball around the penalty area. It's truly remarkable what he's doing when you consider his age, this being his first season at Juventus and all the expectations that were put on his little shoulders when he first signed with the club over the summer. He's lived up to those, and surpassed them at this point. He's a truly special player who I hope will be around for a long, long time to come. Dybala is such a gosh darn hit in Turin he now has middle-aged women dabbing. Patrice Evra was an absolute monster in the second half. He also nearly killed Wojciech Szczesny with that close-range shot a few minutes before Dybala scored the eventual game-winner. Claudio Marchisio against Roma: Five tackles, four interceptions, 95 percent pass completion. The guy is pretty good, you know. Just thought I would throw that out there. How the hell was Daniele De Rossi not sent off before full time was called for? I mean, I know I'll sound like a total Juventus homer here, but come on, man. Pogba's game was pretty meh overall, but I am gonna go ahead and say that assist to Dybala makes up for it. Thus is the beauty of a skill set like Pogba's, right? Gigi Buffon made one save, it was an easy one that was right at him. I think he expended more energy celebrating Dybala's goal than stopping Roma shots on Sunday, but that's just me. Two of their most dynamic playmakers came to the rescue as midfielder Paul Pogba delivered a pass into the box to the feet of Dybala. The 22-year-old forward then beat Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny at the far post. The result was more than deserved for Juventus, who were the better side on the pitch. Roma were far from abject, but they're still finding their footing under new manager Luciano Spalletti. Spalletti only took over on Jan. 14, so he's still experimenting with his side somewhat to see what works and what doesn't. And a match against the reigning Serie A champions isn't exactly the most optimal of testing grounds. Entering Sunday, Roma ranked fourth in Serie A in average possession (56.4 percent), per WhoScored.com. Emphasizing possession against Juve would've been a recipe for disaster—a point Spalletti clearly understood as he put together his lineup and tactical plan. Jan 24, 2016 Juventus made it 11 wins on the trot in Serie A with a 1-0 victory over Roma at the Juventus Stadium on Sunday night. The breakthrough took a while to come to fruition with neither side able to capitalise on their chances, but Paulo Dybala showed his quality once more in the latter part of the game with a wonderful finish to claim all three points. Patrice Evra should have opened the scoring on 22 minutes when his volley went a bit wayward and was blocked by the defence before his second attempt also went off target, although Paul Pogba was in the perfect position to guide it in, but it remained goalless. It took 36 minutes for Roma to get their first real chance of the game with a good cross that eventually dropped to Alessandro Florenzi but he poorly slashed his effort wide. Evra really should have got the first goal of the match just before the 70 minute mark when a brilliant team move ended with his shot being fired towards goal but Szczesny managed to make a great save and block it at his near post. Once again, though, Dybala proved to be the star man for the Bianconeri with a quality finish 15 minutes from the end as he took hold of a Pogba through ball and slotted it into the back of the net from a fairly tight angle. Edin Dzeko had the ball in the back of the net for Roma a few minutes later but the referee disallowed the goal due to a previous foul. Chiellini - Looked in control of things and neatly linked the possession from the defence to the midfield. 26 S. Lichtsteiner - Was involved in the play down the right flank, but without really making a telling impact. 6 S. Khedira - Got himself forward to support the attacks and had a shot that had to be well blocked in the first half. 8 C. Marchisio - Without really performing heroics, he kept things ticking for his side in the heart of midfield. 10 P. Salah - After impressing here with Fiorentina last season, he endured a very poor evening by his standards. 9 E. Džeko - Cut a very isolated figure up front with his side often on the back foot. Roma moved to three at the back, but Douglas Maicon and transfer-listed Gervinho missed out. Daniele De Rossi got an early booking for an off the ball clash with Mario Mandzukic, while Paulo Dybala and Alessandro Florenzi had long-range attempts straight at the goalkeepers. Dybala hit the bar with a delightful control and lob, but only after being flagged offside. Patrice Evra had a volley charged down and on the rebound Paul Pogba just failed to get the final touch. The breakthrough arrived when Pogba waited for the right moment to send a through ball, Dybala sprung the offside trap to control with the inside of the left boot and steer a snooker shot past Szczesny into the far bottom corner. After a poor start to their quest for a fifth successive Scudetto, a resurgent Juve have roared back into the title race with an impressive run of form that has helped them ascend to second place in the table. Having seen Napoli extend their advantage at the summit to five points with a 4-2 win at Sampdoria earlier in the day, the pressure was on the champions to respond at Juventus Stadium. For long periods, it looked as though they would be frustrated by a stubborn Roma outfit in Luciano Spalletti's second game back in charge. But Dybala continued his own personal purple patch with a clinical finish in the 77th minute from Paul Pogba's cute pass - an eighth goal in the last 10 league outings for the Argentine. Victory means Juve keep pace with Napoli and sit two points behind them again, while Roma remain fifth, having won just one of their previous nine league games. There had been seven red cards in the last five meetings between these two sides, and an early off-the-ball tangle between Daniele De Rossi and Mario Mandzukic set the tone for a fractious opening, with the Roma man perhaps fortunate not to see red for standing on his opponent's foot. De Rossi was cautioned for the incident and Dybala sent the subsequent 20-yard free-kick straight at Wojciech Szczesny.
