And even though his mid-30s are already here, it seems as though both the player and the Juventus management are more than happy to keep this quality partnership going. One of the soon-to-be out-of-contract decisions Juve have to make is reportedly out of the way, with Barzagli ready to sign a two-year contract extension through the end of the 2017-18 season, according to Sunday's giornalaccio rosa dello Sport (via Twitter). It could very well mean Barzagli, who arrived from Wolfsburg in January 2010 for a couple of bags of balls and some extra boots, will retire in a Juventus jersey considering he will be 37 years old when the second year of his new deal would expire. Despite his age, Barzagli is still an important piece to the Juventus puzzle. We all know about how well drilled and in-tune the Barzagli-Bonucci-Chiellini combination is. It's just as vital to Juve's success as it has ever been. Whether it's Max Allegri switching between a four- and three-man backline en route to the Champions League final last season or now being part o the 2015-16 resurgence as Allegri has gone with the 3-5-2 formation full time, Barzagli's importance can't be denied. Keeping him right where he is, age not withstanding, is another sign of that. Who knows what Barzagli's role within the squad will be come the beginning of the 2017-18 season, but his leadership and mentoring of players like Daniele Rugani will be valuable if he's playing in five games in the first half of the season or starting 35 straight matches. Jan 24, 2016 At the end of October, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri was a man under serious pressure - just over four months after winning a domestic double. The Italian champions were 12th in the Serie A standings, having amassed just 12 points from 10 games - their lowest return since the 1987-88 season. Bianconeri president Andrea Agnelli publicly expressed his concern before a meeting of the club's shareholders. "We knew the process of renewing the squad could create some problems, but it's not a justification for our current place in the table." It was a subtle but significant statement, a clear message to Allegri that results needed to improve - and fast. The former AC Milan coach wisely concurred that there were no excuses for the Scudetto holders' poor start. "I agree with the president: Juventus should not be in this position... Around March, we must be in and around the front-runners." Some wondered if Allegri would even still be in a job by March. However, we've not yet reached the end of January and Juve are already back in the title race. Going into Sunday's clash with Roma, they sit second in the table, just two points behind leaders Napoli. It has been a remarkable transformation. Admittedly, nobody felt that the Bianconeri would not belatedly bounce back; it was more that few expected it to happen so quickly, given just how poorly they had begun their bid for a fifth successive league title. It is worth remembering that Juve had lost their opening two games in Serie A for the first time ever. Their loss at Sassuolo on October 28 meant that they had lost four of their opening 10 fixtures. The Old Lady had played for 50 minutes with just 10 men in Reggio Emilia, due to Giorgio Chiellini's first-half dismissal, but captain Gianluigi Buffon had no intention of lashing out at the referee after the game. He knew exactly where the blame lay. "It's very simple, if you don't win any of your 50-50s or aerial battles and you can't string together three passes, then that's no recipe for success," the Italian goalkeeping icon fumed. It is undeniably true that Juve's players, for the most part, underperformed during the opening months of the season. But it is worth noting that Allegri's men were not playing as badly as the results suggested. There was an element of misfortune about their position. For example, in five of their opening 10 games, they conceded from the opposition's first shot on target. "We are in crisis in terms of results but not in terms of performances," Allegri argued at the height of Juve's Serie A struggles. He had a point. However, the Bianconeri clearly had some issues to resolve: they were struggling to score goals, making an unusually high amount of unforced errors in defence and Paul Pogba looked lost in midfield. There were mitigating circumstances, though. Last summer, Juve went under a dramatic overhaul in terms of their playing staff and the key losses were Arturo Vidal, Andrea Pirlo and Carlos Tevez. The departures of Vidal and Pirlo, coupled with Claudio Marchisio's injury problems, meant that Juve started their campaign with just one member of the midfield that carried the Old Lady to the final of last season's Champions League: Pogba. Being bestowed with the prestigious No.10 jersey appeared to weigh heavily on the Frenchman's shoulders but the 22-year-old appeared more burdened with what he perceived as his responsibility to fill all of the voids left by sales and injuries. "He must put his ideas in place and be calm once again and live and play like a 22-year-old individual because it is right and normal to do so," Allegri reasoned. "Too much responsibility has been placed on his shoulders, so much that a normal 22-year-old would struggle to cope. "Nobody is asking Pogba to score three goals per game or to win games single-handedly. We just ask Paul to play as he knows how to, a bit more carefree, and make the mistakes a normal 22-year-old makes. That's it. It is easy to understand." It took slightly longer to remedy, but Pogba is now back playing at something approaching his best. For that, both the player and his coach deserve credit. However, the presence of Marchisio and Sami Khedira alongside him has also been key. Khedira, like Marchisio, missed the start of the season through injury - unsurprisingly, given his fitness problems at former club Real Madrid - but he has performed immaculately since his return. It is no coincidence that Juve have never lost with the Germany international in their starting line-up. As for Tevez, his romantic return to first love Boca Juniors deprived Juve of their most prolific and inspirational attacker. The Argentine hadn't exactly carried Juve's attack over the previous two seasons, as he'd been ably supported by Fernando Llorente and Alvaro Morata at various intervals, but he had at least been its driving force. Close to €70m had been spent on striking reinforcements but Mario Mandzukic and Simone Zaza initially struggled to prove their worth, while Allegri seemed strangely reluctant to put his faith in the precociously talented 22-year-old Paulo Dybala. Things have changed, though. Mandzukic is looking increasingly more like his old self, Zaza's form has improved to such an extent that Juve have no decided against selling him in January, while Dybala has been nothing short of a revelation since garnering Allegri's full trust, racking up 11 goals and 7 assists in 19 Serie A appearances. Furthermore, from a defensive perspective, Juve's solidity has been restored, thanks in no small part to Allegri's decision to revert to a 3-5-2 formation - and stick with it (they played four different formations alone in their first 10 matches). They have kept nine clean sheets in their last 12 outings in all competitions, which has played a key role in their run of 10 consecutive league victories. Whereas Agnelli previously felt the results weren't good enough, now they speak for themselves. "We missed many things in the first half of the season," Allegri mused during week, "but I was not worried because we changed so much over the summer. A period of adjustment was only to be expected. Roma lie fifth in the table with 35 points, nine behind leaders Napoli and most importantly five points off third-place Inter Milan in the last Champions League spot. Roma have failed to win any of their last four away games, but one of those was a creditable 0-0 draw with Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo in December. Massimiliano Allegri v Luciano Spalletti Luciano Spalletti and Massimiliano Allegri have faced each other thrice during the period of 2008-2010 when Spalletti was Roma’s manager and Allegri represented Cagliari. Spalletti leads the head-to-head battle thanks to a 3-2 win in December, 2008. However, his record against Juventus is woeful to say the least. Over the last 12 years, Spalletti has never beaten Juventus. In fact, he’s only managed three points in his last 17 Serie A games against the Bianconeri, recording a worrying 14 defeats. Back in August 2009, Spalletti had confidently announced he would end his hoodoo against Juve but instead lost 3-1. He resigned shortly after the loss. The two sides have already met this campaign with Roma running out 2-1 victors in Rome in gameweek two, thanks to goals from Miralem Pjanic and Edin Dzeko. Allegri might use the long-ball tactic again Juventus’ win over Lazio on Wednesday threw up an interesting scenario. Lazio enjoyed 57 percent possession of the ball while they also out-passed Juventus. Stefano Pioli’s men had a set plan to isolate Claudio Marchisio, who usually has the role to link the midfield and strikers. This same plan might be used by Spalletti too who is likely to field French midfielder William Vainqueur to keep an eye on the Italian international. When the supply line to the attackers is cut off, Allegri has opted for a more direct approach. Both Simone Zaza and Mario Mandzukic have admirably lead the line, holding up the ball and playing a vital role in bringing Dybala and the midfielders into the game. If the buildup through midfield is blocked, then route one football has been used with the target-man playing a vital role. This helps Juventus successfully bypass the opponent press in midfield and put direct pressure on the defence. Both the strikers have the attributes to become the focal point in attack with great physical presence which helps them to shield the ball with their back turned to goal. If possession cant be safeguarded in midfield then Allegri will not hesitate to take this approach. Paul Pogba also benefits from this movement as he gets involved more thanks to the target-man bringing the midfield runners into play. Spalletti has to fix the defence for this crunch game Luciano Spalletti failed to make an immediate impact after his return to Roma but things are expected to improve as the season progresses. The players have already claimed that they have done more tactical work under Spalletti in one week compared to Rudi Garcia’s three seasons. Roma have some pressing concerns and Spalletti has wasted little time in tackling them. The first thing which needs to be addressed is the defensive shape of the team which has left Roma exposed many times this season. The Roma coach has been working on the defensive lines and some improvements were noticed in the game against Hellas. Castan’s clumsy challenge resulted in a penalty but the organization which was missing for the last few games was visible. Spalletti has claimed he is working on improving the collective movement of his backline, improving the positioning and also winning second balls efficiently. Roma will be lining up with three at the back with Daniele De Rossi playing in defence – a formation previously used by the present Barcelona coach Luis Enrique. It will be a big challenge to get the best out of struggling Edin Dzeko. The training movements have been centred around getting as much service for the Bosnian who has really struggled to get going after coming to Italy. Salah sounded confident ahead of the game as he predicted a 2-1 win for Roma, although he did admit it will be the toughest game of the season so far for them. The game against Juventus is never a normal one for the Belgian as he had been involved in some verbal duels with the Bianconeri fans in the past. Radja himself had posted some provocative messages earlier this season and he will no doubt get a fiery reception tomorrow at the Juventus stadium. The player has insisted that winning one trophy with Roma would be better than earning 10 with Juve, and he will look to channel his passion onto the pitch for this Sunday night’s thrilling encounter at the Juventus Stadium. It is clear to see that Juventus in Sami Khedira have a quality operator on their hands who is capable of filling the vacuum left by the likes of Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal. Whenever Khedira has been on the pitch, Juventus have never lost. He has played 762 minutes between Serie A, the Coppa Italia and Champions League this season, registering 10 games, and come out on the winning side in eight of them, while the other two have ended in draws. If only Serie A action is taken into account, of the 21 points on offer to Khedira when he has been out on the pitch, the former Stuttgart man has helped the Old Lady pick up 19. He wasn’t available for defeats on the road against Roma and Napoli, nor for home slip-ups against Udinese, Chievo and Frosinone, while he also missed the trip to the Mapei Stadium due to Allegri not wanting to rush him back. The same goes for the defeat in Seville. In total, three separate injuries have hampered him and it was during these periods when the club stuttered. Thankfully for the 28-year-old, he now looks to be over the worst of his problems. He has played the last three games, all of which have ended in victories for Juventus, and he is set to form a formidable midfield alongside Paul Pogba and Claudio Marchisio. To say it's not quite turned out quite like that would be the understatement of 2016 so far. On Sunday, Roma travel to Turin looking to salvage a title challenge that has been flat lining since November, hoping that new boss Luciano Spalletti, back for his second spell, can arrest a slump that did for predecessor Rudi Garcia. Juventus, meanwhile, are on a 10-match winning streak which has pulled Massimiliano Allegri's side back from the dead to within two points of Serie A leaders Napoli. When Juventus kicked off the Turin derby at the end of October, they were languishing in mid-table following a humiliating 1-0 defeat at Sassuolo. They were also 11 points behind top of the league Roma, who were waiting to take on fellow title challengers Inter Milan at the San Siro that same evening. Juve snatched a last-gasp win over their local rivals and Roma slipped to a 1-0 defeat in Milan, handing Roberto Mancini's side the top spot just a week after taking it from Fiorentina. Roma have not been back there since and in the meantime, Juventus have made up 18 points on them, helped by a deeply unconvincing unbeaten run that has seen Roma draw five of their last six, with the only win in that time coming against struggling Genoa just before Christmas. If that run is broken with a defeat on Sunday, Roma will be 10 points behind Juventus and with Napoli at lowly Sampdoria on Sunday afternoon, a potential 12 away from the summit. Not only will they have to kiss the title goodbye, automatic Champions League qualification will be just as far off.
