Dec 17, 2015 Positives Simone Zaza – With the exception of his yellow card and reckless tackling, big Simone was in imperious form, bullying the Torino defence until they collectively submitted with whimper. He’s been called a one-dimensional player, single minded in his play, but sometimes, thats exactly what you need. A big bully of a centre forward who can put himself about and score the kind of goals he did last night. The finish on the first was Trezeguet-esque and the second was a sharp bit of play, considering he could have put his foot through the ball and hit it with his first touch. Impressive. Paulo Dybala – Another game, another goal…it’s becoming all too commonplace now, and what a blessing it is to watch a promising young player on the up-and-up. He links up play perfectly between midfield and the attack but last night, with Torino a man down, he had the opportunity to try the spectacular. Sublime Claudio Marchisio – Every now and again, I like to just switch off from the rest of the team and focus my attention on one player during the match. More often than not, it’s Marchisio because simply put, he’s damn good. His efficiency with the ball, his range of passing, his energy, the way he does simple things to keep the midfield ticking over. Almost always flawless. Paul Pogba – Frustrating for the first half of the match but that quickly gave way to a more mature performance in the second. His free kick was a moment of beauty and his overall play improved as the game progressed. Important to see him back among the goalscorers as he looks like a player that thrives on confidence and his recent performances were patchy. Daniele Rugani – Three months into his Juve career proper, and the young defender finally get his first start in black and white. It’s difficult to assess what kind of a debut it was, given that Torino played much of the game with 10 men, however two things spring to mind: 1) The way young Daniele kept shouting instructions at Bonucci. A small observation and while it probably meant little in the grander scheme of things, it was nice to see young man not being intimidated by the game or the occasion – rather, he shouted out instructions and called out the passes. 2) The sprint back to deny Belotti. While he still got his shot away, the way Rugani managed to narrow the angle and the fact that he covered for Bonucci….little things, little things. The young defender returned to the Bianconeri from Empoli this summer, but only made his first start for the club in last night’s Coppa Italia win over Torino. “My dream for the season is to carve out as much space for myself as possible,” Rugani explained to JTV. “To slowly become a player who the Coach can rely on and trust when I’m needed. Rather than a dream, that’s my goal. “I think that’s what I’ll be doing from now on, to become a reliable player in the eyes of the Coach, who he can rely on when he needs me. “The thing that has surprised and struck me [at Juventus] is the winning mentality that’s in the air. It’s not just words, when you’re inside you can really feel it. “So that’s the thing you notice, along with the level of professionalism and organisation. “Euro 2016? That’s something we could call a dream for this season. Visits to Juventus Stadium either side of the long-awaited victory were decided only by dramatic injury time goals. But when Giampiero Ventura’s Granata crossed the city for the Coppa Italia Round of 16 clash on Wednesday, it felt like we were back to Bianconeri domination. The 4-0 result was the biggest since Juve’s win by the same margin in 2002. Heading in, Juventus only had to look elsewhere to see the potential pitfall. This week has been home to shock results. Genoa were stunned by Lega Pro outfit Alessandria. Roma’s misery continued at home to Spezia, of Serie B. And Carpi advanced at Fiorentina. Then factor in recent Derby results. They had to be wary. A Granata win wouldn’t be on the level of other shocks, but a confident Juve were clear favourites to meet either Udinese or Lazio. While Massimiliano Allegri made changes, this remained a strong outfit in keeping with his pre-game message. “Juventus haven’t won successive Coppa Italia trophies since 1959 and 1960, so I think it would be important to achieve that objective.” One of those introduced was at the centre of the action. Simone Zaza was making just his fourth start, but marked the occasion with a brace. Zaza’s first goal was an excellent swept finish into the top corner. If that was split-second precision, his second goal was more calculated. As a free kick fell into his path, the Italian international sold Emiliano Moretti a dummy and drilled into the far corner. The well-taken goals took his season tally to five, giving the boss something to think about. Allegri ruled out a January loan and Zaza will now fight for his place. By then the match was over as a contest. Cristian Molinaro had just been given his marching orders to hand Juventus the set piece opportunity. The inclusion of Daniele Rugani for his first start was most noteworthy. The highly rated young defender had made only a late substitute appearance against Sevilla in September. Last term at Empoli he excelled in a back four, but here he was lined up on the right of the back three. Rugani’s confidence grew as the first half wore on and by the second the visitors offered little as an attacking force. When called upon he did well to stop Andrea Belotti. It was an encouraging outing helped by an ineffective Torino forward line. That line was in fact so ineffective that Neto, in for his first minutes in nearly three months, kept a clean sheet with ease. The Brazilian cruised through the evening as Toro failed to fire a shot on target. There was also a late appearance for Hernanes – returning from injury – highlighting the options available. That’s eight wins in ten matches for Juventus since Juan Cuadrado’s goal in the first Derby saw them turn the corner. They finish 2015 this Sunday away to Carpi, hoping to end it in the top three. Going into that match and the New Year, Allegri has seen the depth on offer as his side progresses through three competitions. That’s something he can take from the thrashing.

The last-16 tie saw the two clubs meet for the second time in as many months, with the Bianconeri following up October’s Serie A victory with a comfortable 4-0 win. While fielding many of his first-choice XI, Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri took the opportunity to give some underused players an outing here. Neto replaced skipper Gigi Buffon in goal, while Andrea Barzagli, Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala also dropped to the bench. Daniele Rugani was given his first start and seized his chance, overcoming some early nerves to turn in a mature performance on the right of the three-man defence. In attack, Allegri opted to pair Alvaro Morata and Simone Zaza, with the latter arguably becoming the key figure in a contest that was filled with niggling fouls throughout. He could have been sent off once. Hell, he could have been sent off more than once. He was a little too out of control at times. But much to the chagrin of Torino players, coaches and fans alike, Juve's No. 7 remained on the field. And he reminded them of it not once, but twice. Behind Zaza's first career brace in bianconero, yet another Paulo Dybala goal that made our hearts melt with happiness and Paul Pogba's free kick to put the cherry on top, Juventus advanced to the quarterfinals of the Coppa Italia with a 4-0 win over city rivals Torino in the season's bonus Derby della Mole. Those kinds of wins are fun — especially against Little Brother Toro. Just to throw it out there, here's what Zaza has done in his brief yet productive stint with Juve: 10 appearances in all competitions, five goals scored That's pretty good production from somebody looked at as your fourth on the striker power rankings. Maybe more impressive than the brace Zaza after he could have easily been sent off for a second yellow just mere moments before he scored each of his goals, is the final scoreline against a team where low-scoring, last-second wins have become the norm. If you told me Juventus-Torino would finish 4-0 and have Juve make it look so incredibly easy at the same time, I probably would have laughed at you. But when you've got a team getting better by the game helped out by an absolutely stupid tackle by Cristian Molinaro, then that's what happens. Molinaro goes off, then the flood gates opened. Goal, goal and another goal for good measure. It's just the latest sign that this Juventus team is hitting its stride. Too bad we're about to take a couple of weeks off, though. The way Juve is playing right now, I wish they just went right on through the holiday break and continued this momentum that they've built since the early days of October rolled around. And based on how dangerous in front of goal he was, it was also great that Zaza didn't get sent off for one of those tackles that were a wee bit of control. But hey, it's not like that's the only thing that killed Torino's chances of winning Wednesday night, that's for sure. Random thoughts and observations I guess the best thing to happen in Daniele Rugani's first ever Juventus start is that we barely heard his name called on the television broadcast at all. If we were curious to see if Neto was rusty at all after barely playing at all this season, I guess we would have asked for a better and/or more challenging game to get our results. Outside of hauling in a couple of crosses, the Brazilian keeper did next to nothing. Paulo Dybala dedicated his goal to Ale & Ricky. Class. Paul Pogba dedicated his goal to an 11-year-old Juventus fan named Bryan who is suffering from cancer. Class. Both of those players above are 22 years old. That's, y'know, class. Thanks to Pogba, Juventus finally has a goal from a free kick. It was a pretty nice one, too. He scuffed a couple of nice chances in front of goal, but Álvaro Morata's assist on Zaza's first goal was really, really good. The guy needs a goal to get some serious confidence going, but it's not like this game was a total wash. I thought he played relatively well all things considered. Claudio Marchisio didn't complete his first pass against Torino, which means he wouldn't complete 100 percent of his passes for the second consecutive appearance. But he went on to successfully complete just about every other one he attempted after that. Juventus' midfield was in complete control against Torino. And is it any surprise that Juve have gone on this run now that the Marchisio-Khedira-Pogba midfield is healthy and performing well again? Nah, it shouldn't be. Here's your latest confirmation that Alex Sandro is really good. The guy is a beast. Molinaro sent in a cross on free kick that went about 15 feet wide of the Juventus goal. I mean, what else did you expect to happen when it's Molinaro sending in a cross? If anybody knows what's going to happen before it actually happens, it would be us. Max Allegri fielded a pretty strong starting XI in a Coppa Italia game, which may have surprised some of us knowing how Coppa Italia games usually work. Does that mean there will be plenty of squad rotation going down Sunday afternoon against Carpi to close out the calendar year? Maybe. Two delightful finishes were required for his goals as well, which he managed to produce. 9 Álvaro Morata - Played a crucial role in the buildup to the opener, beating two defenders on the left before picking out Zaza with his cross. Goals from Paulo Dybala, Paul Pogba and a brace for Simone Zaza completed a comfortable win for the Old Lady over their rivals. The Bianconeri took the lead through Simone Zaza. The former Sassuolo star was found brilliantly by Alvaro Morata in the box, where he struck the ball on the volley into the top corner. In the second half the Old Lady tried to press home their advantage. Morata tried his luck from outside the box, but goalkeeper Salvador Ichazo parried it out for a corner. From the resultant Leonardo Bonucci put the ball in the back of the net, but was adjudged to be in an offside position. Shortly after it got much worse for the Granata. A second booking for Cristian Molinaro saw the experienced defender leave the pitch and his teammates in a difficult position. Juventus doubled their account shortly after through Zaza once again. The striker retrieving the ball after a free kick broke down, wrong-footing his marker and placing his shot past Ichazo. Torino felt much aggrieved, particularly as Zaza could easily have seen a second booking for a foul on Emiliano Moretti. Paulo Dybala was next to come close for the Bianconeri, the Argentinian curling his shot toward the far corner but not curling enough. However, it didn’t take long for Dybala to get some joy for his effort. Receiving the ball on the edge of the area, he hit a curling strike past Ichazo and into the bottom corner. Paul Pogba completed the win with a wonderful free kick that completely outfoxed Ichazo, curling delightfully into the top corner.

It was naturally a tense affair and Simone Zaza was first into the book, then moments later risked a second yellow for his late sliding tackle on goalkeeper Ichazo. Zaza seemed perhaps too motivated to make the most of this opportunity, but he did a couple of minutes later when volleying in an Alvaro Morata cross from the left as he stood on the penalty spot. The ex-Sassuolo striker still ran too many risks, shoving Kamil Glik into the advertising boards, while Andrea Belotti drilled wide for Torino and Zaza’s long-range attempt was easily smothered. It was an extremely aggressive affair and Afriyie Acquah was booked for kicking Morata in the back of the leg, something that could barely even be described as a tackle. Italy international Zaza, handed a chance alongside Alvaro Morata in attack, was arguably fortunate to still be on the field when he broke the deadlock at Juventus Stadium after a pair of reckless tackles. But there was no questioning the quality of goals in the 28th and 51st minute that displayed power and precision respectively. Zaza now has five goals in Juventus colours despite being restricted to four starts and six substitute appearances since completing his switch from Sassuolo in July. Immediately before falling 2-0 behind, Torino had Cristian Molinaro sent off for two bookable offences, both very much in keeping with a heated local affair, and Zaza's replacement Paulo Dybala got in on the act after 73 minutes. A Paul Pogba free-kick completed Torino's misery and Massimiliano Allegri's holders will tackle the winner of Lazio versus Udinese, having beaten the Rome club in last season's final.
