Pavan says Juventus must now confirm that injuries have held them back Juventus secured an impressive win against Cagliari in the Coppa Italia last night, delivering a performance that pleased both their fans and neutral observers. The victory offered a much-needed boost to a team that has endured an inconsistent season, plagued by a string of injuries that have sidelined several key players for significant periods. Recently, however, there has been positive news on the injury front. Important players like Weston McKennie and Nicolas Gonzalez have returned to the matchday squad over the past two games. Seeing these players back on the pitch in Juventus colours has been a delight for the fans, and their return has raised expectations for improved performances across all competitions. ............ Massimo Pavan emphasized the impact injuries have had on the Bianconeri’s performances and challenged the team to prove this theory by winning consistently moving forward. He stated, “I am pissed off about one thing, if Juventus hadn’t had all these rotating injuries always in key players they would be much further ahead. If they had taken six or seven starters away from Inter today they would be much further behind and the same goes for the others. However, to confirm this theory we now need to win the games starting from Sunday.” ............ . Juventus coach Thiago Motta: “With players returning, we’ll raise our level” Following Juventus’ impressive 4-0 victory over Cagliari in the Coppa Italia, head coach Thiago Motta spoke to Mediaset about the team’s performance and future prospects. Reflecting on the match, he noted the shift in fan sentiment, saying, “We had a good performance, and the crowd is always with us. Sometimes they have the freedom to express their emotions; we need them. We must play one game at a time and work to the maximum. Sometimes we can achieve positive results, and sometimes we cannot, even though we haven’t lost. We have the level to perform well, especially when players like Nico Gonzalez return. Together with those who are consistently playing, they will help raise our level.” ............ When asked about Koopmeiners’ versatility on the field, Motta expressed his appreciation for the player’s adaptability: “I like him everywhere; that’s why he plays. He has technical ability, physical qualities, and mental strength. The team functions well when he is on the field and performing effectively. He can play in multiple positions; in Holland, he has played various roles. The important thing is to keep him fit; he is a top player.” ............ “If there were no injuries, we wouldn’t need to play Manu at the back. In emergencies, it’s crucial to have him in various roles; he is intelligent and has good reading of the game. He believes he can perform well as a central defender, and Kenan has a bright present and future ahead of him. As a winger, he can beat his man, and from a trequartista position, he is very creative. They provide alternatives based on how I see them and depending on the opponent.” . Read more -> https://www.footitalia.com/juventus-coach-thiago-motta-with-players-returning-well-raise-our-level/

Juventus 4 - Cagliari 0: Initial reaction and random observations For much of the opening 45 minutes of Tuesday night’s Coppa Italia Round of 16 tie against Cagliari, things were looking ... for the lack of a better term ... not so great. Juventus’ attack, one that is certainly under a massive microscope these days, had yet to test Cagliari goalkeeper Simone Scuffet all that much, with the overwhelming majority of the 12 shots recorded not on target. Then the 44th minute arrived. As did Dusan Vlahovic showing what a strong man he is. And, what felt like somewhat out of nowhere, Vlahovic — the man who helped Juve salvage a point at the Allianz just 72 hours earlier — broke the deadlock that certainly broke the stranglehold that was hovering over the Bianconeri attack. Vlahovic’s goal right on the doorstep of halftime proved to be the kick in the backside that Juventus needed to do what we’ve seen so many times before at this stage of the Coppa Italia, with a second-half onslaught paving the way for a 4-0 romp over Cagliari that propelled Motta’s squad into the quarterfinals where Empoli now awaits. ............ That has been one of Juventus’ biggest issues so far this season — and especially one that has happened against smaller clubs and potential relegation battlers domestically. Look no further than the last time Juve stepped on the field in Turin against Venezia — they couldn’t put the 20th-place visitors away, and it came back to bite them big time, with only Vlahovic’s stoppage-time penalty saving them from their first loss of the season. Not every game against a team in the bottom half of the table is going to be like this, but this sure was a pleasant change from what Juventus has been doing for much of the 2024-25 season. To put a team away and do it with room to spare is what Thiago Motta wants to see more of from his team, and for them to actually go out and do it was a nice change. ............ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS Pre-game thought No. 1: Just when you thought Juventus didn’t have any options in defense, there goes Thiago Motta giving us the option of Manuel Locatelli at center back that he floated out there during one of his first pre-match press conferences. Pre-game thought No. 2: And just for an added bonus, there’s Weston McKennie playing fullback. I think it’s safe to say that I didn’t have that one on my bingo card. Well played, Motta. ............ I don’t know about you guys, Locatelli looked pretty solid in the center of defense. (Insert your joke about “He should be used to it with how deep he’s played the last couple of years” joke right here because I know you’re thinking it, too.) Who led Juventus in key passes? Locatelli and McKennie, the two midfielders who started in defense. Just like we all predicted, right? ............ With the experimenting of Koopmeiners playing alongside Thuram in the double pivot, you could clearly see that the Dutchman was always going to be the one playing more advanced. The heat maps confirm it, and it’s something that I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing more often for the simple notion of getting Kenan Yildiz more central. And now that Motta has the options to move some folks around, there’s finally the chance for some rotation and tinkering. Speaking of a certain Dutchman, the angle from behind Koopmeiners as he took his free kick that proceeded to rocket off his left foot absolutely ruled. That’s why you’re able to see just how impossible of a shot it was to stop. Little did we know that Koopmeiners’ goal would have some competition for the best goal of the night. Welcome back, Nico. it’s nice to see you out there balling once again. ............ The good thing is that Conceição is also really fun to watch with what he does on the field, so he provides plenty of entertainment with all of his shifty movement as well as his desire to cover his face with his jersey after he messes up sometimes. Combined shots between Vlahovic and Conceição: 13 Total shots from Cagliari as a team: 13 ............ Juventus finished with 27 shots! Been a while since we had one of those games. So now we go from Cagliari to Empoli to reach the Coppa semifinals. No Fiorentina is a nice development, so we thank Empoli for the upset in the Tuscan Derby a couple weeks ago. Just don’t look at what Juventus did against Empoli earlier this season. ............ Juventus smash Cagliari 4-0 to advance in the Coppa Italia Juventus earned a commanding 4-0 victory in their first Coppa Italia match of the season against Cagliari to advance to the next round. ............ During the frantic opening minutes, Dusan Vlahovic missed a golden opportunity when a rebound fell kindly to him, but he failed to capitalise. Kenan Yildiz appeared to have been given a free role in the match, roaming all over the pitch and trying to make things happen. Meanwhile, Francisco Conceição proved to be a constant menace on the right wing. ............ Juventus’ dominance eventually paid off just before the break when Vlahovic latched onto a superb Yildiz assist to open the scoring. The Old Lady started the second half in complete control and quickly doubled their lead, this time through a stunning strike from Teun Koopmeiners. ............ However, it was the hardworking and ever-dangerous Conceição who scored the third goal for Juventus with a moment of individual brilliance. Juventus kept pressing for more goals and were rewarded when Gonzalez capped off the night with a stunning solo effort, sealing a dominant performance for the Bianconeri. . Adani insists Motta has done well so far considering what he inherited Lele Adani, a vocal critic of Max Allegri during his tenure at Juventus, has weighed in on the performance of current manager Thiago Motta. Adani was well-known for consistently criticising Allegri’s tactics during his time at the Allianz Stadium, and while Motta has replaced him this season, the results have not shown significant improvement so far. This has led to comparisons between Allegri’s Juventus and Motta’s version of the team, even though Motta has only been in charge for a few months. Unlike Allegri, who had three years to shape his squad, Motta is still in the early stages of his first season. While Juventus fans and pundits are eager for immediate results, Adani has urged patience. ............ “It’s hard to have faith and trust, but it’s time to have it,” Adani said. “In the initial assessment of the management, in Giuntoli’s head, in my opinion, De Zerbi was also there. In the assessments, in those three-four profiles, in my opinion, he was there too. Motta is the right choice, I’m relaunching on trust. The ground is starting to shake, the fans are tired of these years of failures and were expecting something different. But the way of working and the connection that has been spread is good and remains even in times of difficulty.” ............ . Juventus is plotting a move for 24 year old Newcastle midfielder Juventus has reportedly set its sights on Sandro Tonali, as the Newcastle United midfielder continues to capture attention, including that of Thiago Motta. The Bianconeri strengthened their midfield significantly in the summer, bringing in high-calibre players to address what has been a troublesome area for several years. This push to overhaul the squad followed Motta’s appointment as manager, signalling a renewed commitment to fixing persistent weaknesses. ............ Tonali, who has recently returned from a lengthy ban, remains highly regarded despite his absence. Newcastle United fans hold the Azzurri star in high esteem, but reports suggest he might be open to a return to Italy. According to Tuttojuve, Juventus is prepared to make significant changes to accommodate the 24-year-old’s arrival. The club is even willing to offload certain players, including Nicolo Fagioli, to make room for Tonali. ............ . Moreno Torricelli insists Juventus must beat Cagliari to bring calm to Turin Juventus faces Cagliari in the Coppa Italia this evening, and the Bianconeri are determined to underline their seriousness in the competition by securing a victory. This match marks their first appearance in this season’s tournament, and it presents a valuable opportunity for Juventus to start strong and set the tone for their Coppa Italia campaign. ............ Cagliari will enter this fixture with some optimism, especially after watching Juventus struggle against Venezia over the weekend. That match, which ended in a disappointing draw, highlighted Juve’s unpredictable form and failure to capitalise on opportunities. The inconsistency becomes even more striking when considering Juve’s recent triumph over Manchester City. ............ Former Juventus star Moreno Torricelli has weighed in on the importance of this match, emphasising that beating Cagliari is critical for the club’s morale and to regain momentum. He remarked: “In Turin, everyone expects Juventus to win and advance to the next round. Every competition is important, because winning it would enrich the trophy cabinet and calm, at least temporarily, the discontent of the fans. I am convinced that Vlahovic and his teammates will approach the match with great attention.” Torricelli’s words reflect the expectations surrounding Juventus. Winning tonight’s match is not just about advancing in the competition but also about restoring confidence in the team. A victory would inject much-needed positivity into the club and reassure fans of the team’s commitment to achieving success. ............ . McKennie for new role against Cagliari as Juve battles injuries Weston McKennie continues to demonstrate why he is one of the most valuable and reliable players at Juventus. The American midfielder has consistently stepped up for the team, and this evening’s Coppa Italia match against Cagliari could see him deployed in yet another role. ............ Further complicating matters is Juventus’ ongoing injury crisis. The squad is currently without any natural left-backs, leaving Thiago Motta with limited options for his defensive lineup. Motta is likely to turn to McKennie to fill the void. The Juventus manager has shown great trust in McKennie’s adaptability, believing the American can thrive in various positions when needed. Although primarily a midfielder, McKennie has repeatedly demonstrated his versatility since joining the club. Over the course of his Juventus career, he has played in several roles across the pitch, often exceeding expectations and delivering solid performances. Whether tasked with contributing in central midfield, as a wide player, or in more defensive duties, McKennie’s work rate, tactical intelligence, and resilience have made him indispensable. ............ . While Juventus faces challenges, the team remains determined to secure victory against Cagliari. With players like McKennie willing to step outside their comfort zones for the greater good of the team, Juventus has every reason to believe they can overcome adversity and advance in the Coppa Italia. . Juventus vs. Cagliari match preview Juventus’ Coppa Italia run begins against one of the many clubs in which they have a draw against in Serie A. A lot has happened at Juventus between May 15 and the present day as we sit here a week before Christmas. The roster that faced Atalanta in last season’s Coppa Italia final in Rome has been drastically turned over, and of course the man who is now managing said squad is different from the one who lifted the trophy following an eventful night in the Italian capital. ............ Although, there is a catch to all of this: Cagliari just so happens to be one of the 10 teams that Juventus have drawn against already this season. So, as much as these round of 16 ties have a history of being matchups that overwhelmingly favor Juventus, we have evidence to the contrary that Thiago Motta’s squad have already struggled to put Cagliari away this season. So that basically means one of the extremely obvious themes of Tuesday night’s matchup in Turin is this: Will Juventus be able to actually beat a team that they have already draw against once this season? ............ If Juventus are to get past Cagliari, they will face Empoli in the quarterfinals after the Tuscan side upset Fiorentina on penalties two weeks ago in Florence. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Early Coppa Italia fixtures are prime for squad rotation, but will Motta actually be able to rotate? With a few players back from injury but likely unable to play anything close to a full 90 minutes, this is the balancing act that Juventus’ manager must try and play. There are players that desperately need a rest, but with the current injury list being what it is and those who are just back from injury not having many minutes in their legs, it’s a weird middle ground to be in. Juve manager Thiago Motta did not hold a pre-match press conference on Monday, so we’re not totally sure where his mind is at in terms of squad rotation. We know how much he would love to rotate his squad on a regular basis — just look at what he did at Bologna last year and in the early parts of this season before the injury crunch arrived as evidence to that — but that just hasn’t been possible over the last month because so many players are out. On top of the three long-term absentees, Motta is expected to be without Andrea Cambiaso, Jonas Rouhi and Douglas Luiz. That means there’s no depth in defense and no one less body in the midfield. (Although Douglas Luiz’s absence seems more planned than something that has come up following the Venezia draw.) ............ Can Juventus avoid what happened last time against Cagliari this time around? Not just the fact that it was a draw. But also the simple fact of not putting one of the worst teams in Serie A away when you have the chance and then see them come back and tie things up. It’s the same kind of situation that we’re seeing from this team more and more against the provincial sides in Serie A. And we have the latest example from just a couple of days ago against Venezia when Juventus couldn’t get a second goal, then saw the visitors take a 2-1 lead only for Dusan Vlahovic to score the game-tying penalty kick right before the final whistle. At this point, it feels like Juve have drawn against teams in every way you possibly can. That’s just what happens when you have 10 draws through your first 16 league games. So now, as Juve face a side they are expected to beat and advance to the Coppa Italia quarterfinals, the fact that they’ve already drawn once against Cagliari is very much fresh in the mind of a lot of people. ............ Can a likely tired defense hold firm enough? For yet another game, Juventus are expected to have just four defenders available — Federico Gatti, Pierre Kalulu, Danilo and Nicolo Savona. While we didn’t get any sort of squad update from Motta on Monday, we can pretty much guess that those who were out against Venezia will be out against Cagliari, with Cambiaso and Rouhi being the two short-term absentees. This will be the same quartet that started against Manchester City. It’s the same quartet that started against Venezia. So, put that all together and this group will likely be asked to play another 90 minutes — and a grand total of over 270 when it’s all said and done — in less than a week. ............ In a perfect world, Motta would be able to recover and somebody like Kalulu or Gatti (or — gasp! — even both) could get the night off. But because Juventus’ injury situation is what it is and both of the season-ending knee injuries are to Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal, Juve’s sudden lack of depth at the back is resulting in some players logging bigger amounts of minutes than their manager would certainly like. MATCH INFO When: Tuesday, Dec. 17 2024. Where: Allianz Stadium, Turin, Italy. Juventus remains without two full-backs for the Cagliari game Juventus face Cagliari in the Coppa Italia today, and this match has taken on significant importance as it provides another opportunity to secure a trophy this season. For a club of Juve’s stature, every competition matters, and the Coppa Italia is a chance for Thiago Motta’s side to prove themselves. Motta, still adjusting to life at the helm of one of Italy’s biggest clubs, is learning firsthand that managing Juventus is far from straightforward. The pressure to deliver consistently is immense, and his team’s inconsistent form is something that surely weighs heavily on his mind. ............ This match also presents Motta with a chance to rotate his squad and provide rest to key players who have been overworked in recent weeks. However, his options have been severely limited due to injuries. Juventus will be without Jonas Rouhi and Andrea Cambiaso for this game. Cambiaso has already missed two matches as he recovers from injury, and Rouhi is now unavailable as well. The absence of both players leaves Juventus without a natural left-back in the squad. Danilo, who has stepped in to fill the role over the last two matches, remains Motta’s most reliable option. While the Brazilian defender deserves rest, circumstances dictate that he will likely start again today. ............ . Juventus vs Cagliari: Preview and Prediction Thiago Motta’s Juventus will kick-start their Coppa Italia title defence with a home game against Cagliari on Tuesday evening. Juventus might be unbeaten in Serie A, but they have played way too many draws and will be looking to get things back on track with a win here. European commitments mean the Old Lady will enter the cup at this stage, and they will host a Cagliari outfit that have already won two matches to make it to the round of 16. ............ Juventus have drawn each of their last four league games and their only win in the last five games came against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. They are heading into this fixture on the back of a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Venezia. Motta’s charges will have to put up a much better performance if they want to make it to the next round. ............ Team News & Tactics Juventus There is some positive for the Old Lady heading into this fixture, as Douglas Luiz and Nico Gonzalez are both back fit. Meanwhile, Juventus remain without the services of Arkadiusz Milik, Juan Cabal and Bremer. Andrea Cambiaso and Jonas Rouhi will both have to prove their fitness to be a part of this fixture. Thiago Motta who will return to the bench after serving a ban last time out. The Juventus manager will be looking to make quite a few changes to the XI for this cup fixture against Cagliari. Juventus will stick to the 4-3-3 formation, and Mattia Perin should be the one in goal for this fixture. Danilo will be the right-back, while Rouhi could start on the left if he is back fit. In the heart of the defence, Federico Gatti should partner Pierre Kalulu. As for the midfield unit, Douglas Luiz should return to the starting XI and partner Manuel Locatelli and Nicolo Fagioli in the centre of the park. The trio will look to control the tempo and ensure they dominate possession of the ball. Francisco Conceicao and Samuel Mbangula should feature on the flanks, with Timothy Weah leading the line for Juventus against Cagliari as Dusan Vlahovic is expected to be rested for this one. Probable Lineup (4-3-3): Perin; Danilo, Kalulu, Gatti, Rouhi; Luiz, Locatelli, Fagioli; Conceicao, Weah, Mbangula Cagliari ............ Probable Lineup (3-4-1-2): Scuffet; Wieteska, Palomino, Obert; Azzi, Deiola, Marin, Felici; Viola; Lapadula, Pavoletti Key Stats Juventus and Cagliari have faced each other 96 times across competitions. The Old Lady have won 49 of those fixtures while the visitors only have 15 wins to their names. The Turin-based club are unbeaten in their last seven games against Cagliari. (W5 D2). The last meeting between the two teams was a 1-1 draw in the Serie A back in October. Cagliari are winless in their last five away games having lost three of those games. The Bianconeri haven’t lost a Coppa Italia game at home since 2015. Player to Watch Timothy Weah ............ Prediction Juventus 2-0 Cagliari Juventus have not been at their best this season. The Bianconeri have played out way too many draws and they will be without quite a few first-team players. But, they still have a lot of quality in their ranks to go past Cagliari who have lost each of their last three games. The visitors will find it difficult to put up a fight against the Old Lady. Juventus decide to drop Douglas Luiz from Coppa Italia squad Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz has just made his return from injury following a two-month absence, but he won’t take part in the Coppa Italia contest against Cagliari. The Bianconeri will kickstart their cup campaign by hosting the Sardinians on Tuesday night at the Allianz Stadium in the tournament’s Round of 16. This tie has been perceived as an opportunity for those who earned less playing time, like Nicolo Fagioli and Samuel Mbangula, to get some minutes in their legs. Luiz certainly fits this category, having only made two appearances as a starter in Serie A since joining the club in the summer. ............ But while many were hoping to see more of the former Man City midfielder, the player will be dropped from the matchday squad. As the source explains, the medical and technical staffs agreed that the player’s return to action should be delicately managed to avoid a relapse after the lengthy stoppage. Therefore, it has been decided not to risk the Brazil international in the cup fixture, but he should return to the fold for the weekend trip to Monza. ............ . Jorge Mendes lands in Turin ahead of crucial talks with Juventus for young defender Super agent Jorge Mendes has reportedly arrived in Turin to negotiate a possible move for his client Antonio Silva to Juventus. The 21-year-old is widely considered among the best young defenders in Europe. He established himself as a stalwart for both Benfica and the Portuguese national team. ............ Silva was finally given a starting berth in last night’s league draw against AVS, but it came after a series of omissions. So unless his situation dramatically changes in the coming weeks, the young defender will be looking to leave the Eagles as soon as possible, as he would like to retain his starting role with Portugal ahead of the UEFA Nations League playoffs. ............ Mendes has now landed in Turin as he prepares to meet Cristiano Giuntoli and Co. in the coming days. The two parties will be primarily discussing the transfer of the young Portuguese defender, and try to find a formula that receives Benfica’s approval. Silva’s contract with the Eagles is valid until June 2027, and it contains a release clause worth 100 million euros. Nevertheless, his transfer value is estimated at circa 40 million. . Juventus preparing new contract for midfielder despite recent renewal Juventus are reportedly looking to agree a new deal with Weston McKennie just months removed from his last contract extension. The midfielder’s stint at Turin has been characterized by seemingly never-ending highs and lows. For the second summer in a row, he started his pre-season as an outcast, only to usher his way back to the squad, and regaining his status as a regular starter. ............ As the source explains, Juventus appreciated the ever-improving displays of the former Schalke man who has been filling various roles. He even served as an emergency striker against Milan when Dusan Vlahovic was ruled out of action, albeit he wasn’t able to inflict damage upfront. The Texan is at his best when acting as a box-to-box midfielder, relying on his high energy levels to retrieve the ball and then insert himself in the attacks with his sneaky runs towards the opposition box. This season, McKennie has contributed with a goal and two assists in his 10 Serie A outings this season. He has also been influential in the Champions League, scoring two goals in his five European appearances. ............ . Is Thiago Motta at risk? Juventus set minimum objective for the season After a promising start to the campaign under Thiago Motta, Juventus have seemingly run out of steam as of late, dropping points left and right in Serie A. The Bianconeri have yet to taste defeat in the league since the start of the season, but only managed to win six of their 16 fixtures, while settling for draws on the ten remaining occasions. The Italian giants have shared the spoils against several lowly oppositions, including the likes of Empoli, Cagliari, Lecce and most recently Venezia. ............ Astonishingly, this result occurred only three days following an exhilarating 2-0 win victory of Premier League champions Man City in the Champions League. Therefore, Juve’s form this season has been a genuine conundrum. Amidst all the chaos, many fans and observers are beginning to voice their frustration with Motta. The young manager arrived in Turin with much fanfare, but has yet to showcase the progressive and fluid style of play he became synanymous with during his sensational stint at Bologna. ............ So does the Italian Brazilian risk losing his job already? Motta will be peacefully eating his Panettone peacefully, which is an Italian idiom that means the manager will remain in his post at least for Christmas. As the source explains, the 42-year-old is unlikely to go anywhere in the middle of the season, especially after signing a three-year contract, as the club still considers him at the very center of the project. However, Motta’s status could drastically change if he fails to qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season. ............ . Yildiz promises next five years to Juventus: ‘I will give everything for this shirt’ Kenan Yildiz says that he sees himself ‘on the pitch and giving everything for this shirt’ in five years time, as the Bianconeri teenager speaks in-depth following his Golden Boy web award. The 19-year-old was the recipient of the 2024 Golden Boy Web award, voted for by Tuttosport readers. I still have a lot to learn and there are lots of different aspects of my game that I still want to grow and improve.
