Agnelli hits out at Superga banner Dec 3, 2012 Andrea Agnelli has criticised the Juventus fans who unveiled a banner mocking the Superga tragedy during the derby against Torino. In May 1949, almost all of the Grande Torino side which dominated the Italian game were killed when their plane crashed on their return from Portugal. “I don’t believe that the supremacy of supporters should be manifested by remembering the tragedies of others,” Juve President Agnelli noted. “You see these banners in stadiums all over Italy with gratuitous insults that absolutely have to be condemned. “It is a shame to see that in a stadium where the atmosphere is noted by the Curva – they have the power to give personality to an arena. “Tragedies, as far as I am concerned, don’t have club loyalties.” Turning to the playing side of things, Agnelli was pleased with the win over Toro and looked forward to this week’s Champions League game at Shakhtar Donetsk. “It’s very pleasing to win a derby thanks to two players, Sebastian Giovinco and Claudio Marchisio, who grew up in our youth system,” he continued. “The most satisfying thing of the night was that from 10.30pm onwards, I didn’t hear from half of my friends… “Shakhtar? Il francese sta per insaccare, ma l’arbitro ferma tutto per una carica inesistente ai danni del portiere granata. Il vero erroraccio è però quello di Glik, che al 36’ macchia una gran prestazione con un fallaccio incredibile ai danni di Giaccherini. Espulsione diretta e Torino in inferiorità numerica. La partita cambia, nonostante Ventura ponga parziale rimedico con Di Cesare al posto di Meggiorini (40’) e conseguente passaggio al 4-4-1. Al 41’ Basha scivola in area e travolge Pobga, rigore per la Juventus. Dal dischetto va Pirlo, al quale cede il pallone Vucinic. Incredibile ma vero, però, il regista spedisce il pallone alle stelle in un’incredibile revival dell’errore di Salas (grazie alla zolla spostata da Maspero) di dieci anni fa. La Vecchia Signora non demorde. Passa al 3-5-2 con Giaccherini e De Ceglie esterni ma si deve accontentare di chiudere il primo tempo sullo 0-0. RIPRESA-SHOW: DOPPIO MARCHISIO E GIOVINCO – Alessio torna nuovamente al 4-3-3 in avvio di ripresa con l’ingresso in campo di Bendtner al posto di Giaccherini. Vucinic si sposta sulla sinistra, Giovinco passa a destra. E cambia completamente la partita perché finalmente i bianconeri sfondano con un numero incredibile di cross dalle fasce. Al 49’ Pogba si divora il gol su imbeccata perfetta di Vucinic e spizzata successiva di Bendtner, ma altrettanto non fa Marchisio che al 57’ la mette dentro con un’incornata in tuffo propiziata da un cross delizioso di Giovinco dalla destra. La partita finisce virtualmente qui. Entra Asamoah al posto di De Ceglie per dare ulteriore spinta (61’), mentre Ventura leva Bianchi per inserire la finta punta Stevanovic (63’). Ma il Torino non esce più dall’area e al 67’ Giovinco fa doppietta con un bel diagonale dalla destra. Se il punteggio non diventa più pesante è soltanto perché Gillet fa due autentici miracoli su Pogba e Bendtner. Ma il gol è sempre nell’aria e così all’84’ Marchisio non si fa pregare sparando in porta un sinistro perfetto su assist di petto di Vucinic. È il 3-0, la mazzata definitiva per un Toro in partita soltanto per mezz’ora. La Juventus si ritrova e torna a volare. La maledizione dei granata, da 17 anni a secco nel derby della Mole, prosegue. LA MALEDIZIONE CONTINUA – Sarà anche vero che Pirlo ha fallito il decimo rigore in carriera e il terzo consecutivo in campionato. Ma la maledizione è soltanto granata. Il Torino continua a estendere la serie negativa più lunga di sempre nel derby della Mole ma nella storia delle stracittadine italiane. It was close early. Back and forth with strong pace. The first real chance came from Torino. Riccardo Meggiorini had an awful miss in the 23rd minute that will surly haunt him and his teammates for weeks to come. Paul Pogba had a chance to put Juve ahead when Torino keeper Jean-François Gillet couldn't hold a shot right in front of the net. As Pogba went to play the ball, the officials whistled him for a foul. It was a shocking decision, to say the least. The pace was strong from both sides, but in truth it was all but a sure thing for the Bianconeri when Torino's Kamil Glik came in on a reckless challenge that resulted in a red card in the 36th minute. http://youtu.be/JPvJ-Ye6fu4 Juventus wasted no time in attempting to take advantage of the shorthanded side. They were awarded a penalty at the 40th minute on a handball in the box. After the half it was a much different story. Juventus was completely in control, and quite frankly, this one could have easily ended 5-0. The tie was broken in 57th minute when Claudio Marchisio scored on a beautiful header that Gillet couldn't get a hand on. Sebastian Giovinco doubled the score 10 minutes later with his fifth of the season in Serie A. If there were any doubt from then on, Marchisio added another one to Juve's scoreline in the 84th. Marchisio was the man of the match, and his two goals put his total in Serie A at three on the season. Truly a special night for the Torino native. For Juventus, their strong victory in Saturday's Derby make it impossible for anyone to gain any ground on them in the table this weekend. Looking ahead, Juventus play their next match against Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk on December 5. Their Serie A match four days later is in Sicily against Palermo. For Torino things don't get much easier next week, as they host the unstoppable Stephen El Shaarawy and the rest of his recently resurgent Rossoneri. Dec 2, 2012 COMMENT By Kris Voakes | Italian Football Writer For 35 minutes it appeared that the real winners of the Turin derby might be Shakhtar Donetsk. The biggest week of Juventus’ season eventually got underway with a sizeable win on Saturday night, but Torino will be left wondering what might have been had Kamil Glik’s red card not conditioned a game the home side started like a team with better things on their minds. With their trip to Ukraine looming large, Juve needed simply to get the local showdown out of the way with minimal damage on both the energy resources and the league table. But they struggled to put their foot down as the Granata gave as good as they got in the early stages, and the idea that the Bianconeri might achieve neither of their aims for the evening began to creep into the mind with each grimace on Leonardo Bonucci’s face and every yard Andrea Pirlo covered in midfield. Antonio Conte and Angelo Alessio – along with Massimo Carrera, the latter’s predecessor as matchday coach – have refused to make wholesale changes to their Serie A line-ups preceding Champions League fixtures this season, and that policy continued on Saturday despite the magnitude of Wednesday’s appointment. And until Glik’s costly decision to make a rash two-footed challenge on Emanuele Giaccherini it was looking like the wrong choice. With Bonucci clearly struggling with the muscle strain he picked up in fouling Stephan El Shaarawy in the defeat to AC Milan six days earlier, Conte may have been better advised to leave the centre-back on the sidelines. So too might he have decided to rest Pirlo, who has yet to turn in convincingly back-to-back in a Champions League week this term. Instead, the coach and his right-hand man saw fit to send out eight men who are likely to be asked to start once more in Donetsk in midweek, while also bringing on a ninth in Kwadwo Asamoah in the second half. Only Giorgio Chiellini and Arturo Vidal of the likely starters were left on the bench throughout, and both of them have spent much of the last seven days racing to prove their fitness. Conte got away with his gamble thanks in large part to Glik’s 36th-minute red card, with the Bianconeri – playing in a 4-3-3 formation for the first time in over a year following Martin Caceres’ under-par centre-back performance against Milan – being able to afford the luxury of a missed Pirlo penalty before coasting home in the second half. From having looked ready to cause a stir, suddenly Torino were left impotent and Juve were cantering in with energy to spare. It became only a matter of time before they eventually broke through as they made almost a chance a minute for a period after the interval, and Sebastian Giovinco’s great cross from the right was headed home by Claudio Marchisio, who misses the Donetsk trip due to suspension. With the pressure lifted and Torino’s shoulders sinking to the floor, Giovinco drove home a second and Marchisio grabbed a late third. Had it not been for Jean-Francois Gillet there may have been a couple more to boot. Juve turn their attentions to the big one knowing that they have yet to record successive victories in the Champions League and their preceding Serie A fixture at any point this term, but the scenario could have been much worse. The Old Lady would have undoubtedly expended more energy up against 11 men than 10 last night, but a bit of good fortune helped them eventually sidestep that particular landmine. Now they need to make the most of it by getting the result they crave so dearly on Wednesday. The next 90 minutes will define Juventus’ season, and misjudgements on and off the field will be more readily punished. They are a great sign of where Italian football ought to be going, especially in its current economic crisis, and represent only the tip of the iceberg. Marchisio and Giovinco are in their mid-20s now and needed a particular set of circumstances to become Juventus first team regulars. The midfielder first really broke into the line-up during the season in Serie B at the age of 20, as perhaps he would’ve been loaned out like Giovinco was to gain experience if the squad had not been dealing with such a massive sea-change.
