GIORGIO CHIELLINI È di buona famiglia, è giovane, ma lavora già da qualche anno – scrive Giulio Sala su “Hurrà Juventus dell’aprile 2006 – si mantiene e nonostante questo non ha abbandonato gli studi, anzi, è iscritto all’Università; si è ingegnato e ha trovato un modo originale di fare beneficenza, mostrandosi intraprendente e generoso; ha talento e un brillante avvenire davanti a sé... Vagli a trovare un difetto a Giorgio Chiellini. Ne avrà, come tutti, ma diamine, li maschera proprio bene! Il classico “ragazzo da sposare”, insomma. Ne sarà ben conscia la sua fidanzata, che sta con lui da due anni e vive a Livorno; questo è tutto quello che ci è dato di sapere di lei, perché Giorgio ne tutela gelosamente la privacy e non ci dice neanche il nome. Ci dice, però, tante altre cose interessanti che raccontano di un ragazzo che sa divertirsi, come è sacrosanto che sia a ventun anni, ma che sa anche prendere tremendamente sul serio gli impegni che assume. Come l’Università, appunto. Nonostante sia riuscito a sfondare nel calcio, Giorgio infatti ha continuato a studiare e, compatibilmente con gli impegni della professione, punta alla Laurea in Economia e Commercio: «Qualcosa dovrò pur fare quando smetterò di giocare e credo che oggi, senza una Laurea, si combini poco. Magari a fine carriera resterò nel mondo del calcio, ma nel dubbio preferisco prendermi il famoso pezzo di carta». – Quanto ti manca per finire? «Eh, per ora ho dato solo due esami: quest’anno ho passato Economia Aziendale e tra poco dovrei darne un altro. Quando ero a casa, avevo già dato Matematica e devo dire che mi era andata bene: giocavo nel Livorno, ma andavo all’Università a Pisa... per fortuna non mi ha riconosciuto nessuno!». – Voti? «Buoni, non posso lamentarmi: sai, a scuola andavo bene, ho fatto il liceo scientifico, alla maturità sono passato con 92/100 e Matematica l’ho data appena finito le superiori, quindi non ho avuto problemi. Con Economia Aziendale, non avendo mai studiato ragioneria, ho avuto qualche difficoltà in più, ma sono comunque passato». La vocazione di Giorgio allo studio è, per così dire, un vizio di famiglia; il papà è un primario in Scienze Motorie e anche suo fratello gemello, pure lui calciatore, frequenta l’Università: «Sì, ma lui sta studiando “davvero”, con molto più impegno e continuità. A calcio gioca più per divertimento e per passione. È in Eccellenza, nel Perignano. Abbiamo giocato insieme fino ai quattordici, quindici anni, poi i risultati sono stati diversi e quindi io ho preso un’altra strada. Mio fratello è un difensore centrale, ma non abbiamo mai “fatto reparto”: io a quell’età giocavo a centrocampo, non sulla fascia però, in mezzo. Ero molto più alto degli altri e quindi la palla la prendevo sempre io. Poi, piano piano ho allargato la posizione e mi sono spostato sempre più indietro, fino a divenire un terzino». E che terzino! Dopo la parentesi di Firenze Giorgio è tornato in bianconero e si è messo in luce da subito, meritando la fiducia di mister Capello: «Speravo di poter far bene e di riuscire a recitare un ruolo importante, anche se forse non mi aspettavo di trovare tanto spazio a inizio stagione. A ottobre ero riuscito a ritagliarmi un posto in squadra, giocavo e stavo bene; poi ho avuto un po’ di sfortuna, qualche problema muscolare, e devo ancora ritrovare la forma migliore, ma la mia esperienza qui, finora, è stata comunque molto positiva e mi ha permesso di crescere; giocare in una squadra come la Juventus e avere questi compagni e questo allenatore che ti fanno sentire la loro fiducia è un grande passo avanti per me». – Beh, te la sei meritata dopotutto, con una crescita continua. In cosa credi di essere migliorato maggiormente? «Quest’anno penso di aver imparato a curare di più la fase difensiva: il primo pensiero, fino all’anno scorso, era spingersi in avanti, ora invece e non prendere gol; sto molto più attento a non scoprire la mia zona». – Ci sono altri aspetti sui quali pensi si dover lavorare ancora? «Margini di miglioramento ce ne sono, su tutti i fronti, ma credo che i più importanti siano a livello mentale, perché giocando in una squadra come la Juve, in palcoscenici così importanti, devi per forza tirare fuori la personalità e quando fai per così dire “il salto di qualità” è forse la cosa più difficile. E non parlo solo della Champions League, ma anche di partite come Juventus-Milan o Inter-Juventus: prima non avevo mai giocato gare del genere. In Nazionale, ad esempio, avevo giocato una partita di qualificazione, ma le altre volte erano solo amichevoli, importanti perché vestivo la maglia azzurra, ma non per il risultato». – Quelle più importanti, in azzurro e con la Juve, arriveranno tra poco... «Eh sì, spero di rientrare senza altri problemi. Piano piano sto recuperando e mi auguro di poter dare una mano al gruppo, anche perché in quest’ultimo periodo ci sarà bisogno di alternarsi per riuscire a dare il massimo e a raccogliere i frutti di un anno di lavoro. Non dimentichiamoci che ancora non abbiamo fatto niente. Finora il nostro è stato un ottimo campionato, ma non ci dobbiamo sentire appagati, perché correremmo il rischio di rovinare tutto. In Champions siamo riusciti a qualificarci per i quarti, ma d’ora in poi non possiamo sbagliare nulla». Sembra di sentir parlare un veterano. Eppure Giorgio è ancora giovanissimo, ma dimostra una maturità rara a trovarsi in ragazzi della sua età, e non è un complimento gratuito. Non bastasse l’impegno che mette in campo o nello studio a dimostrarlo, ecco l’ultima chicca, la beneficenza, fatta in modo discreto e assolutamente originale: vendendo su Internet le maglie scambiate con i colleghi calciatori e devolvendo il ricavato al Camillian Social Center Chiangrai un centro in Thailandia per i bambini orfani a causa dello Tsunami e per persone malate di lebbra e AIDS, abbandonate dalle loro famiglie: «È tutto nato per caso: durante lo scorso Natale ero a casa e, navigando su Internet con mio fratello, ho visto che una mia maglietta, scambiata al termine di una partita, era stata messa all’asta su E-bay. Avendone tantissime a casa, ho trovato più utile impiegarle per uno scopo benefico. Ne ho già vendute un po’ e abbiamo raggiunto 10.000 Euro». – Qual è quella che è stata pagata di più? «Quella della Roma, che in campionato, solo per la partita contro di noi, aveva uno sponsor di acque minerali. Essendo un pezzo unico, era molto ambita dai collezionisti ed è stata venduta a 1.800 Euro. Poi, naturalmente, ce ne sono altre che vengono “battute” a meno e che sono acquistate dai tifosi». – Calcio, studio, beneficenza… ma il tempo per rilassarti un po’ lo trovi? «Oh sì: abbiamo la fortuna di allenarci la mattina e al massimo alle tre arrivo a casa. Obiettivamente, fino all’ora di cena, salvo rari casi, non ho nessun impegno che, quando non studio, mi impedisca di giocare un po’ con la Playstation». – Quali sono i tuoi giochi preferiti? «Mi piacciono quelli di guerra, Medal of Honour, Call of Duty, oppure, naturalmente, il calcio, Pro Evolution Soccer in particolare. La vera passione però è un calcio manageriale, da giocarsi in rete, con il computer: Hattrick. Mio fratello ci gioca già da un paio di anni, ma io non lo conoscevo. Lui ha insistito: “Provalo, vedrai che ti piace”, me l’ha ripetuto non so quante volte, alla fine gli ho dato retta e, in effetti... aveva ragione. È una specie di Fantacalcio virtuale, ma con giocatori inventati, ognuno con le sue caratteristiche che ti permettono di valutarli, acquistarli e creare così la tua formazione». – E al Fantacalcio, con i calciatori veri, non giochi? No, ho smesso da quando sono un “diretto interessato” e sono in serie A. Prima giocavo con gli amici di casa e ora, non essendoci mai, seguirlo e fare le aste sarebbe un problema». – Quindi non “ti sei mai comprato”. «No, ma se lo facessi di nuovo, mi comprerei per forza: titolare inamovibile ogni domenica!». Lo saluto con il mio testo a lui dedicato e contenuto nel libro Il Guerriero della Juventus (Giglio, Cucci, editore NFC). È un po’ lungo, ma credo che la sua lettura ne possa valere la pena. Giorgio Chiellini. Livornese purosangue, nato il 18 agosto 1984. A Pisa. Un ossimoro da Vernacoliere. Ma non è uno scherzo, né un errore. Così è riportato nei documenti, nella patente, nell’Almanacco Panini. Tutto reale per una verità peraltro già scritta nel suo nome e cognome, il cui anagramma è: “Illogiche origini”. Provare per credere. Il motivo ormai è noto. “Colpa” del padre ortopedico e della zia ostetrica che “giocano” per l’Ospedale Santa Chiara di Pisa. E così sia. Giusto e solo per l’anagrafe, però. Perché per tutto il resto Giorgio è livornese di cima in fondo, passando per quel nasone che è pieno di curve e saliscendi come il meraviglioso lungomare del Romito. Cinquecento partite e più con la maglia della Juventus. Centenario con la Nazionale. Capitano bianconero e azzurro. Gemello di Claudio, fratello di Giulia e Silvia. Marito di Carolina, babbo di Nina e Olivia le cui iniziali sono gli unici marchi tatuati sul suo corpo. Dottore in Economia e Commercio dal 2010, quindi Laurea “Magistrale” in Business Administration nel 2017 con una tesi sul bilancio della Juventus (110 e lode, e menzione di merito, tanto per rimanere al top anche lì). “Migliore centrale al mondo” secondo Massimiliano Allegri, uno che lo conosce bene. Professore ad Harvard in Tecniche e strategie difensive per Josè Mourinho. Nel 2019 unico italiano nella nomination dei cinquantacinque candidati al World 11 della FIFA; il tutto a trentacinque anni, il più “vecchio” della lista. Nove scudetti più uno, una manciata di coppe e supercoppe domestiche e un campionato di Serie B con la Juve nel 2007. Sì anche questo, anzi soprattutto questo nel “palmares” di Re Giorgio, perché lui tra i Cadetti c’è stato, trionfando. Prima della lunga parentesi bianconera, con il suo Livorno ha centrato la doppia promozione in B (2002) e in A (2004) e nel mezzo il titolo europeo con l’Under 19 (2003). Un vincente nato. Non predestinato, attenzione. Una vita di progetti, traguardi, conquiste progressive, ma non ossessive. Un cammino che non si è mai fermato e che continua anche oggi perché mosso dalla passione vera. Un percorso di lavoro, impegno, sacrificio costante. Nessun regalo, un passo alla volta per migliorare e migliorarsi, critico severissimo e intransigente con se stesso (come un certo CR7: non si è campioni a caso). Un ragazzo venuto su con principi sani grazie a Lucia e Fabio, i genitori – sportivi anche loro in gioventù – che hanno saputo gettare semi di qualità in un terreno che è apparso fin da subito molto fertile. L’educazione. Parola chiave. Il rispetto del prossimo, altro must del bel vivere civile. Gli immancabili errori (perché ne ha fatti anche lui, mica è san Giorgio). E poi la formazione, le fondamenta per una vita strutturata e solida, in difesa come in attacco. La scuola – quella pubblica, ci mancherebbe altro – e lo sport (il tentativo con la musica ebbe vita breve). Con i libri che vengono prima del pallone, anche di quello da basket, perché a Giorgio, va detto, piace pure la pallacanestro che ha radici profonde a Livorno (e lui sogna davvero di fare le schiacciate a canestro). Ma è il calcio ad avere la meglio. Cresce la passione di pari passo con il fisico e la determinazione, ne sa qualcosa babbo Fabio che esce stremato da quegli uno contro uno con il bimbone. Si fanno le prime scelte di cuore e mentre Claudio vira sulla Juve, Giorgio si innamora del Milan del suo idolo Maldini, maglia numero tre (prendere nota). La prima squadra dei gemelli è il “Livorno 9”, una delle tante piccole società del tessuto calcistico cittadino (il nove è il numero della circoscrizione della città). Giorgio non passa inosservato. Ha voglia, grinta, carattere. C’è sempre. È una garanzia: non si esaurisce mai, come le pile Duracell, zinco e carbone (“Dura di più”, recitava lo storico slogan dello spot televisivo, 1984, l’anno di nascita dei Chiellini’s). Calcia con il sinistro, è una forza della natura, ha coraggio da vendere. Ci vuole poco perché se lo accaparri il Livorno, quello vero. Ci va anche Claudio, hanno dodici anni. A tredici, ecco la prima metamorfosi decisiva per il ricciolino dalla faccia simpatica: da centrocampista qual era, viene trasformato in terzino di fascia. E su quei binari mancini, sfonda. Entra nel giro nelle Nazionali e a sedici anni fa capolino in Prima Squadra dove ci sono califfi come Protti, Di Carlo, Piovani. Iniziano a soffiare anche le sirene inglesi (si veda alla voce Arsenal), respinte al mittente con tutto il loro carico ipnotico. È ancora un ragazzetto. Bene che stia a casa sua, almeno per un altro po’ e cresca con il suo Livorno. Intanto debutta in C1, giusto qualche apparizione e una bella ramanzina a reti unificate da mister Osvaldo Jaconi, quella volta che, causa persistente febbrone, non si era fatto vedere al campo per alcuni giorni. Pensava di non sbagliare, in totale buona fede. “Ma dove credi di essere? - lo rimbalzò il mister quando riapparve allo stadio - “Ti sembra normale non esserti mai fatto visitare dal dottore? Qui siamo professionisti, non bambini”. La manata, stile Bud Spencer, gli arriva dritta alla base della nuca. Un episodio chiave. Lo ricorda tuttora Giorgio come insegnamento fondamentale per la formazione. Si cresce, e il giovane Chiellini viene su bene, seppure sia ancora un po’ sgraziato nei movimenti, e con qualche difficoltà a dosare l’enorme potenza di un fisico straripante. Ma ha appena diciotto anni. Seppure da comprimario, conquista la Serie B. È felice. Ma siamo solo agli inizi. Il 2003 è l’anno della prima svolta: si diploma la Liceo Enriques (92/100); vince l’Europeo Under 19 con la Nazionale; la Roma si prende metà del suo cartellino, ma soprattutto conquista un posto da titolare in Prima Squadra (il mister adesso è Walter Mazzarri). L’inizio, come capita spesso, è casuale: è l’indisponibilità del compagno ad aprirgli le porte dei primi undici. Il seguito è da gente che ha dei numeri e volontà, perché una volta entrato, Giorgio non esce più di squadra. Terzino sinistro con licenza di avanzare. Gioca sempre al massimo, non molla mai l’osso, è spigoloso e pungente. Fisicamente è una roccia, una roccia che corre fortissimo nella sua maglia amaranto. E dopo Piacenza-Livorno del 29 maggio 2004 (3-1 per Protti & Co) ecco il ritorno in A dopo cinquantacinque anni. Giorgio è il bimbo più felice di Livorno. Da tifoso, da livornese verace, vive da protagonista un sogno e quella partita rimane una delle più belle della sua carriera. La gioia e la felicità vera del Giorgio-tifoso fanno a cazzotti con la consapevolezza dell’imminente addio del Chiellini-calciatore. Il ragazzo è combattuto, il suo cuore batte forte. Andrà alla Roma pensano tutti, lui compreso. E invece, ecco il colpo di scena. Fabio Capello, neo allenatore della Juve, stravede per il giovane livornese che nel frattempo è una pedina stabile dell’Under 21. La società bianconera si muove e giocando di sponda con il presidente del Livorno, riesce a beffare i giallorossi. Le buste per risolvere la comproprietà danno ragione a Spinelli che ha scritto tre milioni. Non sono soldi suoi, ma della Juve e così Chiellini, vent’anni, parte alla volta di Torino. Ma c’è ancora una tappa intermedia prima dell’investitura finale. La rosa bianconera è ampia, per lui gli spazi sono pochi. Il rischio di un anno da passare tra panchina e tribuna è alto. Si decide per il prestito secco alla Fiorentina, sempre in A. Un po’ di tirocinio può fare bene a tutti. Giorgio sfrutta l’occasione alla grande. Per lui sarà una stagione molto positiva, sempre come terzino sinistro. Arrembante, fisico, potente. Titolare fisso. Esordio in A, il debutto nella Nazionale maggiore chiamato da Marcello Lippi, tre gol all’attivo (uno proprio a Buffon con esultanza incorporata, bravo Chiello!), la salvezza dei viola e l’immediato ritorno alla base. È il 2005, l’anno del matrimonio vero con la Juve. Che stavolta viene consumato. È la stagione dello scudetto poi rimosso. È il campionato che finisce con la condanna alla B per la Juve. Sono momenti di grande difficoltà. C’è disorientamento. Molti big se ne vanno, anche il suo idolo Cannavaro. Altri fuoriclasse rimangono, tra cui i freschi campioni del mondo Del Piero, Buffon e Camoranesi (per tacer di Trezeguet e Nedved). Rimane anche il giovane Chiellini. E Deschamps, il nuovo trainer bianconero, si affida a lui. Lo schiera sempre più spesso al centro della difesa. Per Giorgio è una novità. L’idea lo stuzzica. La marcatura corpo a corpo gli è sempre piaciuta. Tutto quello che è fisico, gli appartiene. E lo fa godere. Più di un gol segnato. Perché difendere è anzitutto cura, protezione delle cose più care, riparo sicuro. E poi un’arte. Ci vuole visione, immaginazione. Prevenire le mosse, anticipare la giocata. È un gioco di sguardi, è acrobazia di pensieri. Difesa, infine, è lotta. È contatto, gomiti, spintoni, testate. Tackle, scivolate, anticipi. Calci e calcioni, talvolta. Juventus, dunque. Serie A, subito al primo colpo (e un paio di gol nella gara-promozione con l’Arezzo sono suoi). Ma tornare immediatamente competitivi non è semplice. Fanno fatica tutti, anche il ventitreenne Giorgio. Manca una leadership a livello dirigenziale. Chiellini è deluso dalla società. Ha i nervi tesi, ma deve presentarsi in conferenza stampa. Ci va. E nella cabina della sua testa ha il sopravvento il sentimento della rabbia (l’omino rosso di Inside Out che prende fuoco, giusto per darvi un’idea): “Se non servo più non c’è problema, vado via”. Ci pensò il mister di allora, Claudio Ranieri, a rimetterlo in riga. Prima con una bella risciacquata di testa a secco davanti ai compagni, per poi ribadire il concetto a favore di telecamera. Un’altra di quelle lezioni imparate a memoria, che Giorgio non ha dimenticato, anzi. Annate complicate, si diceva, caratterizzate dal classico effetto montagne russe: rapide ascese, e precipitose scivolate verso il basso. Lui c’è dentro fino al collo. Ora al centro, ora riportato a sinistra. Non ha pace. Anche il fisico ogni tanto richiede lo stop per un tagliando in corsa. Sono stagioni tribolate. Quella con Delneri, ottima persona, è tra le più faticose, con la difesa a zona che balla paurosamente. È la squadra che non gira, manca la giusta organizzazione, mancano le giuste parole. Manca il timone dirigenziale. Sono momenti cruciali. Restare alla Juve o prendere altre vie? Il Real Madrid prima, poi anche il Manchester City si fanno sentire. Voci, rumors, trattative. Chiellini non cede. Il bianconero ormai gli appartiene, è una seconda pelle. La Juventus è sempre più percepita come una famiglia. Ora più che mai che un Agnelli, Andrea, è tornato al comando della società e dopo un anno di prova, ha trovato la chiave di volta: si chiama Antonio Conte. 2011, la Juve rinasce con la guida dell’ex capitano che tocca le corde giuste. Ma i primi passi sono in salita. Ne soffre anche Giorgio, ancora una volta fatto rimbalzare dalla fascia al centro e viceversa. Fino all’invenzione della BBC: Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini (e Buffon alle loro spalle). La difesa a “tre”, il muro invalicabile, la santa alleanza. La base dell’incredibile rincorsa allo scudetto che si materializza a Trieste, il 6 maggio 2012. La vittoria della Juve contro il Cagliari per i tre punti decisivi, quelli che servono per staccare definitivamente il Milan. Ancora nessuno lo sa, né lo può neanche lontanamente immaginare. Ma quel giorno inizia l’epopea della Juve del Terzo Millennio. Nove scudetti di fila, quattro Coppe Italia e altrettante Supercoppe italiane. Sempre con Giorgio Chiellini che, anno dopo anno, diventa ancora più importante, decisivo, esempio, emblema. Conte gli ha ridato entusiasmo, conoscenze tattiche e stimoli. Max Allegri calore, emozioni e una capacità di lettura della partita senza pari. Giorgio cresce costantemente. Si sgrezza, è meno irruento e falloso (per la cronaca, aldilà delle apparenze, due sole volte è stato espulso nella sua carriera juventina). Migliora tecnicamente, è più pulito, il nuovo gioco (anche con Allegri) prevede la partenza da dietro con i difensori chiamati a una maggiore partecipazione alla manovra. Difendere adesso è anche costruire. E Giorgio non si tira indietro, dando prova di umiltà e intelligenza per imparare cose nuove. Certo i duelli con Ibrahimovic, Suarez, Cavani e CR7 li porta nel cuore. Il suo ruolo romanticamente è quello dello stopper (e pazienza se sulle spalle il suo numero di targa è il tre, omaggio a Paolo Maldini). Lo 0-0 al Camp Nou nel ritorno di Champions League del 19 aprile 2017 contro il Barcellona di Leo Messi è per lui “La Partita”, ancor di più del 3-0 dell’andata che lo vide anche marcatore del terzo gol. Già i gol, ci sono anche quelli. E poi, i pugni sul petto, per un’esultanza da King (Kong), immaginata in una serata livornese con gli amici di sempre. Ma quel che più conta è non far segnare l’avversario. Annullarlo, non farlo respirare, farlo girare a vuoto, stancarlo. Con intelligenza e astuzia, giocando più con la testa che con i muscoli. Con il tempo diminuisce la quantità dei falli, mentre aumenta il numero dei palloni toccati e dei passaggi compiuti. Gestisce benissimo il suo corpo che ascolta attentamente nella lunga doccia pre-partita (uno dei riti, lui li chiama inneschi, della fase che precede la gara). Distribuisce con maggior raziocinio le energie. Lavora di più e meglio sull’anticipo, sulla lettura della partita, sui movimenti dell’avversario, sulle azioni preventive. C’è studio vero degli avversari, c’è applicazione, c’è concentrazione, anche grazie ai momenti di solitudine, al silenzio o alla musica nelle cuffie, persino nella lettura prima di addormentarsi (sempre un tormento, specie dopo il match che gli ha consumato tutte le energie). È così che si diventa campioni. Con il lavoro costante, con la voglia di sfidare e di sfidarsi. Con l’umiltà nel sapere riconoscere gli errori di campo per non ripeterli. Con il desiderio di superare l’asticella posta sempre più in alto. Con la forza di volontà di tornare a giocare dopo la rottura di un ginocchio, a trentacinque anni, un guaio che per moltissimi avrebbe significato addio al pallone. Per lui no. Ha ancora tanto da dimostrare, per primo a se stesso. Ha altri traguardi da conquistare. Il decimo tricolore consecutivo, per esempio. Per non parlare della Champions. E poi c’è ancora la Nazionale. Il bilancio a oggi è agrodolce, ma la partita azzurra non è ancora finita. Ha fatto 500 in bianconero (510 per la precisione). È il capitano. È il simbolo della Juventus del Terzo Millennio. È un leader. Carismatico, ma non appariscente. Capace di gesti meravigliosi anche nei confronti dell’avversario appena sconfitto. Con le stampelle dopo il grave infortunio al ginocchio la sera del 31 agosto 2019 al fischio finale dell’arbitro, incrociò lo sguardo dolente di Koulibaly che a tempo scaduto aveva condannato il suo Napoli con un clamoroso autogol. Lo abbracciò in mezzo al campo. Un gesto spontaneo, bellissimo, esemplare. Da capoclan positivo e intelligente ha proposto il taglio dello stipendio per sé e compagni nei mesi del lockdown. In giacca e cravatta è sempre stato con la squadra anche durante la sua lunga convalescenza, ritiri compresi. Farà il dirigente, ha già iniziato a studiare la parte. Giorgio Chiellini e la Juventus. Anzi, è la Juventus. Unico ad aver messo in fila i nove scudetti dell’era moderna. Andrea Barzagli ha smesso. LEANDRO PAREDES La partita della Juventus contro la Sampdoria – afferma Emanuele Atturo su ultimouomo.com del 30 agosto 2022 – è stata un disastro. Poche volte la manovra della squadra è parsa tanto agonizzante, incapace di superare la prima pressione del blocco compatto degli avversari. Non è stato tanto il risultato, quanto la sensazione di assoluta sterilità del giro palla perimetrale, da terzino a terzino, a tratti sembrato un misterioso esercizio meditativo. Perdere l’io nel giro palla da Alex Sandro a De Sciglio. La partita ha lasciato brutte sensazioni. Sono circolati meme e discorsi tossici. L’immagine del raccordo anulare che la Juventus doveva percorrere per arrivare ai suoi attaccanti – spesso con la caption “Allegri-ball”, come se quella sorta di esagono disegnato sul campo fosse l’esito ultimo ed esoterico delle idee reazionarie del tecnico – ma anche la statistica, pesante, degli appena nove palloni toccati da Dusan Vlahovic durante la partita. Contro la Roma Allegri ha fatto qualche correttivo per sistemare l’uscita dal basso della Juventus. Ha spostato Danilo al centro della difesa e il gioco come per miracolo si è sbloccato. Si riusciva finalmente a bucare la pressione avversaria, a dire il vero molto malandata, della squadra di Mourinho. La mezzala sinistra Miretti si muoveva dietro o al fianco di Cristante; Cuadrado indietreggiava ai fianchi di Matic e la Juve è riuscita a risalire il campo con una facilità rara negli ultimi tempi. Sembrava di respirare di nuovo. Tuttavia è difficile immaginare che questa sia la soluzione a tutti i problemi, e contro squadre con un pressing meno confuso o quanto meno con delle distanze meno sconclusionate, la Juventus avrà bisogno di qualcosa in più. In particolare avrebbe bisogno di coinvolgere di più i suoi centrocampisti. Ed è anche questo il motivo per cui da settimane sta provando a comprare Leandro Paredes dal Paris Saint Germain. Un giocatore dalla carriera ambigua, il cui valore assoluto è stato spesso oggetto di intricate discussioni. Arrivato in Europa dal Boca Juniors, forse troppo presto, e con la scomoda etichetta di erede di Riquelme, per adattare il suo gioco ai nuovi ritmi ha abbassato la posizione, da enganche a regista. È stato Giampaolo all’Empoli il primo a sfruttarlo in quella posizione. Paredes sarebbe capace di calciare un pallone nella cruna di un ago e nel 4-3-1-2 a rombo con una densità centrale molto fitta il suo gioco di passaggi si è esaltato in verticale. Dopodiché però ha avuto una carriera strana, condizionata dall’esilio russo allo Zenit, che lo ha fatto uscire un po’ dai radar. Noi lo intervistavamo proprio in quel periodo, in cui cercava in qualche modo di rientrare nel calcio italiano. Il suo passaggio al PSG è stato ancora difficile da decifrare, ma se non altro ha messo in chiaro una cosa: pur con tutti i suoi limiti, Paredes può giocare in una squadra d’élite. Può farlo soprattutto per una qualità tecnica e balistica a tratti irreale. Già nei suoi anni alla Roma, in cui Spalletti non lo ha mai apprezzato troppo, circolavano video dei suoi allenamenti in cui fa cose con la palla che in pochi sanno fare. La sua sensibilità tecnica è da giocatore d’altri tempi e quando calcia il pallone c’è qualcosa di leggermente diverso dal solito. I suoi tiri potenti sono più potenti degli altri, i suoi tiri dolci sono più dolci degli altri. I tagli che dà alla palla sono difficili anche solo da immaginare. Sempre alla Roma, sporadicamente, veniva fuori questa qualità fuori dal mondo. Nei suoi anni al PSG Paredes non ha forse trovato la consacrazione che cercava, ma si è consolidato come un regista da Champions League, la cui presenza può reggere anche le partite più intense, la cui qualità non viene meno neanche nei contesti più scintillanti. Resta un giocatore con pregi e difetti spiccati, in particolare nel dinamismo, nella capacità di coprire campo negli scivolamenti orizzontali o correndo all’indietro. Nei suoi anni al PSG è migliorato però nell’interpretazione difensiva, con uno stile molto appariscente in cui spiccano i suoi recuperi in scivolata. Paredes è comunque un giocatore tosto nei contrasti e con ottimi tempi di intervento. Le sue migliori qualità sono però chiaramente col pallone. I suoi numeri nella distribuzione del gioco sono incredibili e lo inseriscono tra i migliori passatori al mondo. Anche Tuchel, che lo ha allenato al PSG, sottolineava la sua capacità di andare in verticale come una delle sue migliori qualità («Paredes è molto intelligente, ama fare passaggi importanti tra le linee»). Del resto la qualità del suo destro e la sua visione di gioco sono assolutamente eccezionali. Certi passaggi di Paredes verrebbe voglia di mangiarli. D’altro canto Paredes si esalta quando può dettare il ritmo del gioco, toccare molti palloni, influenzare tutta la fase di possesso palla della squadra. È un passatore straordinario nel lungo, ma ama comunque giocare nel breve e associarsi con i compagni. In coppia con Verratti, per esempio, hanno giocato una partita di assoluta dittatura del possesso nell’andata dei quarti Champions League lo scorso anno contro il Real Madrid. Paredes è uno di quei giocatori che ha bisogno di sentire il pallone per accordarsi alla partita. Queste caratteristiche permetterebbero alla Juventus di spostare l’influenza di Locatelli qualche metro più avanti, esaltandone le qualità di regista aggiunto, di palleggiatore insieme a un giocatore che gioca più indietro. Con Paredes e Locatelli (e una mezzala più dinamica che compensi i loro movimenti) viene facile immaginare una Juventus che domini il possesso palla, anche perché in un gioco in cui la squadra non controlla il pallone, ed è costretta a lunghi momenti di difesa posizionale, i limiti di Paredes (quelli che non convinsero mai del tutto Spalletti) potrebbero venir fuori più chiaramente. Molto dipenderà, come sempre, dai principi che Allegri vorrà trasmettere alla squadra. L’acquisto di Paredes sembra un suo esplicito desiderio. Un allenatore ossessionato dalla tecnica individuale, dalle categorie, dalla sensibilità con cui un calciatore sa manipolare un pallone. Paredes, sulla carta, è una sua creatura, un giocatore peraltro perfetto per le sue sfide a tiri nelle porticine o da calcio d’angolo. Un giocatore infatti accostato alla Juventus quasi ogni anno in cui sulla panchina sedeva Allegri. L’esaltazione del gioco e della tecnica, a parole, di Allegri, non ha però sempre trovato una sua corrispondenza in campo. Ora però è obbligato a far combaciare le due cose, se non altro per pragmatismo. Allegri è sempre stato considerato un che adatta il proprio stile ai giocatori che ha e, se dovesse arrivare anche Paredes, non avrebbe più molte scuse per nascondersi dietro le qualità della rosa, per giustificare una squadra spesso fin troppo reattiva. Se anche con Paredes (e poi Danilo, Di Maria, Locatelli, Cuadrado, Vlahovic) la Juventus continuasse ad avere problemi nella risalita del campo, se non altro, sapremmo una volta per tutte con chi prendercela. Draw at Genoa puts brakes on Juventus’ momentum A dire second half and a clear lack of a plan offensively laid bare the limitations of the team’s current tactics. Ah, the Marassi. Time and time again, Juventus go into the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, and time and time again some weird crap happens that sees either Sampdoria or Genoa taking points off the Old Lady. The curse seems like it’s been on for over a decade now, with Juve failing to defeat — and often losing to — teams that have absolutely no business getting a result on the day. So was Friday night’s game against Genoa. Juventus got their heads in front after half an hour when they capitalized on a mistake from the hosts to earn and convert a penalty. But after some serious warning signs the last few weeks, the weakness of the way Massimiliano Allegri has been playing finally bit Juve in the rear. Genoa equalized within minutes of the restart, and for the rest of the half the Bianconeri looked bereft of ideas — when the home team wasn’t putting them under some significant pressure. Their only two serious chances to get back in front came on another serious Genoa mistake and a corner, respectively. When the final whistle confirmed the 1-1 score, Juventus had tripped up in a big way, leaving the way open for Inter to add to their league lead when they face a faltering Lazio team on Sunday. ........... The game had all the makings of a frustrating one when Genoa made a major mistake. Badelj made a heavy touch off a pass from Malinovskyi and presented it straight to Vlahovic, who immediately slipped Chiesa into the box. The winger tried to round Martinez, only to end up on the ground in a heap when the keeper’s hands caught him in the shins. Referee Davide Massa had an easy penalty call. After Vlahovic missed his last two penalties, it was Chiesa who stepped up to take this one — a surprise indeed considering he had last taken a penalty kick in the 2019-20 season. But he buried his shot, firing left while Martinez went the other way, ending his two month long goal drought at the club level and giving Juve that all-too-familiar 1-0 lead. Juve probably should’ve had another penalty three minutes later when De Winter pulled Vlahovic down by the shirt as he tried to shoot in the right channel, but both Massa and VAR official Michael Fabbri declined to intervene. ........... Juve’s team defense was shambolic. McKennie missed the opportunity to at least get the ball clear when he got a foot to Ekuban’s square pass into the middle, allowing Badelj and Frendrup to combine to get the ball back to the Ghanaian in the box. Bremer was left with a choice of who to mark and went for the man with the ball the ball, leaving Gudmundson completely alone. Ekuban executed perfectly, chesting the ball to himself and then heading it into the path of Gudmundson for to finish from 7 yards, grazing Szczesny’s fingertips as it went by. Juventus should’ve been back on top within minutes. Martinez was trying to hit a pass out of his own box to Sabelli, but Chiesa was right there and jumped the pass. The keeper somehow recovered and sprawled at Chiesa’s feet to get a hand to the ball as Chiesa tried to put it over him. Two minutes later, Bani appeared to have handled a Cambiaso cross, but again no check was made and Genoa got away with another potential penalty. ........... Searching for another late winner as the game entered its end stages, they very nearly found it when Chiesa sent in a free kick in the 88th minute. The delivery evaded the heads of three Genoa defenders and found Bremer on the back end. The Brazilian tried to bundle it in with his stomach (or possibly a slightly lower body part) and looked sure to have emulated his defensive partner Gatti in the late winner department. But Martinez somehow threw his hand up and tipped the ball over the bar, denying Juve their best chance to score in more than half an hour. Another puzzling refereeing decision deprived Juve of a late advantage when Malinovskyi was spared a red card after hitting Kenan Yildiz with a studs-up challenge halfway up his shin, receiving only a yellow instead. That missed opportunity when he jumped Martinez prevents this from even being slightly higher. He was a real handful for Genoa in the first half, although he cooled off a little in the second. Far and way led not only the team but the game in key passes with four, and compared to Kostic he was 4-for-8 on crosses, most of which came from the same side. DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 5. Hard for a striker to flourish when he only touches the ball 24 times, but the miss in front of goal on Chiesa’s cross was a tough one, and against Genoa he was a step slow on the little things that he’s been doing very well of late. SUBS ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 5. Only touched the ball seven times in 23 minutes ........... TIMOTHY WEAH - 5. ........... SAMUEL ILING-JUNIOR - 5. ........... KENAN YILDIZ - NR. Needed to be on the field earlier than this. Didn’t have time to contribute beyond taking that horrible tackle from Malinovskyi. MANAGER ANALYSIS This game laid bare some of the problems with the way Allegri has been coaching in his second tenure. We’ve talked each of the last two weeks about Juve having gotten lucky some lucky breaks. This is what happens when the luck runs out and the defense doesn’t play inch-perfect football. Also exposed in this game was the fact that Allegri really doesn’t have much in the way of ideas for scoring outside the counterattack. Juve held a lot of possession in this game and simply looked lost as to how to score with it. There was a general lack of urgency in this team, up to and including deep into stoppage time, which is a coaching issue as well. Allegri has no Plan B right now other than throw subs on and hope that their individual quality stands out amongst their peers. ........... There were issues with Allegri’s in-game management as well, specifically his subs. First off, they started happening well after the point where it became clear a change might help the team. Then he put Iling-Junior on in midfield, who was clearly uncomfortable without the space to move on the wing. Perhaps most at issue is the timing of the introduction of Yildiz, who was only given three minutes to make an impact for a team that desperately needed him in the absence of Paul Pogba and Nicoló Fagioli. Predictably, he wasn’t able to make that happen. He should’ve had a lot more time on the field to work against a tired Genoa defense. Juventus 1 - Genoa 1: Initial reaction and random observations Juve gained ground on Inter, but not exactly in the kind of way that you wanted them to do so. The catch with how Max Allegri wants to play his football is that there are two very obvious things that you can’t keep thinking about even before kickoff: there’s a razor-thin margin for error, and because of that you’re left to wonder what happens if there’s a sudden change in how things are going if Juventus has a 1-0 lead. For the most part this season, things haven’t really had to change from the standard deviation. Juve get the 1-0 lead, they hold steady defensively, maybe add a second goal and then we ride that to three points. There hasn’t really needed to be the last-minute craziness like we saw against Monza a couple of weeks ago to begin this string of Friday night fixtures. On the third and final of three straight Fridays, the tying goal arrived much earlier than the first minute of stoppage time. The answer from Juventus, though? Nope, nowhere to be found. ........... To put it simply, Juve just weren’t good enough. And when that happens, one mistake could end up hurting you greatly. ........... The fact is, Allegri’s way of playing is sustainable until it isn’t. It’s a fine line, and this is going to play the way of eking out potential wins much more often than they’re going to cruise by teams that are sitting just above the relegation zone. Juve had avoided games like this one pretty much all season long. But on this Friday night, they got bit in the ass by simply being unable to generate enough goals other than the one they scored from the penalty spot. That’s studs up, leg clearly well off the turf and right into Yildiz’s shin and ankle. Red card 100% of the time. Serie A refereeing incompetence strikes again. Oh, and this wasn’t ruled a hand ball. Got it. ........... There were so many misplaced and bad passes. So many bad touches — that free kick late in which Federico Chiesa got the ball from Samuel Iling-Junior and then totally cooked his first touch right into the path of a Genoa player ... woof! It was just bad times all around. All four of Juventus’ subs didn’t really add much of anything. ........... I repeat, one of Juventus’ best scoring chances was thanks to Bremer’s groin and the only reason it wasn’t a goal was due to a great save being made. If this is what we’re saying about your scoring chances on the day, then maybe it’s not exactly a good thing. So now we have to root for Lazio to do something good against Inter on Sunday night. Judging by how Lazio have played this season, that’s not exactly the best thing in the world. Also, rooting for Lazio in general just seems like not the best thing there is.
