Vlahovic strikes twice as Juventus throttle Verona to take the early league lead Juve put in another fantastic shift and became Serie A’s only perfect team. After last week’s season-opening win against Como, Juventini were trying to temper their excitement with qualifications. Small sample size, weak opponent, all that stuff. After Monday’s much stiffer test on the road against Hellas Verona, some of those qualifications about Juventus’ early-season performances are starting to drop away. An away game against Verona is never a good time. Going into the game, Juve had only won two of their last 10 games at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi — a period that stretches back to Massimiliano Allegri’s first tenure with the team. While by no means an ultimate test, the Mastini were going to be a much stiffer test than Como, and a good measure of whether Juve’s performance in the opener had staying power. ............ Monday’s game started a bit slower than last week’s did, but it followed almost the exact same script: Juve picked up the breakthrough midway through the first half, added a second shortly before halftime, and put the game away with a third not long after the restart. All the while, they kept on playing their game, pressing until the final minutes of the game, and running Hellas off their own pitch for a second consecutive 3-0 victory. The win makes Juve the only team in the league to win their first two matches and perches them atop the early table. ............ The game started a little differently than a week ago. Unlike Cesc Fabregas, who somewhat unwisely decided to try to go toe to toe with Juve at the Allianz, Verona were far more pragmatic. They defended compactly and denied Juve space to move the ball forward. After the first 10 minutes, Vlahovic and Yildiz hadn’t even touched the ball. ............ Juve broke the deadlock off a mistake in the 28th minute. Locatelli caught Duda napping with the ball and tackled it off him into the path Yildiz, who fed the ball through the middle to Vlahovic. Vlahovic stayed strong as three defenders converged on him, and stroked the ball past Montipo just as they got to him. There was a brief moment of uncertainty when a VAR check came up to make sure Locatelli’s tackle was fair, but referee Antonio Giua was never called to the monitor and the goal stood, much to the frustration of the Verona players. ............ Verona’s best attempt at a response was a direct free kick that Suslov whacked into the wall. Three minutes later Juve doubled their lead. Vlahovic was again in the thick of things, but this time fate smiled on Savona, who headed a cross from Mbangula back across goal. Vlahovic went up and tried to apply a final touch, but it flew just past him and then squeezed between Montipo and Coppola to get over the line, giving the team two goals in two games from a debutant. ............ The statistics going into the break included a number Juventus fans aren’t particularly used to: 65% possession, along with three of five shots on target, and once again no shots on target for the opposition. The second half started cagey again, but Mbangula once again made a mark seven minutes after the restart when he charged into the box and was taken down by Tchatchoua for a clear penalty. NICOLO SAVONA - 8. Another debutant, another fantastic performance. Savona had the ball in the net twice (although one of them didn’t count) and was a constant presence in the attacking phase, but, critically, did not do it at the expense of his defense. He tied for second on the team with four tackles and added an interception as well. If this is the start of a breakout, it would be a massive development, because quality full-backs are a rarity in this sport. FEDERICO GATTI - 6.5. ............ BREMER - 8. This man is an absolute unit. He made five tackles and blocked three shots, two of which were high-quality plays. If an attacker was close to him, he wasn’t going to be doing much. He also completed 92.6 percent of his passes, including five of seven long balls. Reports of his inability to play in a back four are greatly exaggerated. JUAN CABAL - 5.5. The one player that I’ve harbored concerns about over the first two games. The majority of the bad giveaways today came from him (at least one of Bremer’s blocks came because of one of his turnovers) and he also had a couple of strange moments in defense, including one where he faced up Tchatchoua but ended up turning the wrong way, allowing him to burst inside. MANUEL LOCATELLI - 7. Playing this double pivot seems to have rejuvenated Locatelli. He was the team’s hub, attempting 101 passes. ............ NICOLO FAGIOLI - 6. An understated game from Fagioli, who nonetheless did some good work, completing 94.4 percent of his passes and making four tackles. He registered a key pass despite not being close to the goal all that often. ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6. ............ He looks like he could be a chameleon all year. KENAN YILDIZ - 7.5. Another excellent game by the teenager. Assisted Vlahovic with an excellent pass down the middle, led the team in dribbles and had a pair of tackles defensively. One in particular was a mazy run that would’ve been a fantastic goal had the shot not been blocked. SAMUEL MBANGULA - 8. Dude is rapidly becoming unbenchable. Another assist was one of a game-high three key passes, and his run into the box earned the penalty for the third goal. He attacks space, puts the ball into great places once he gets there, and he tracks back to contribute defensively, as evidenced by his pair of tackles. Right now, you have to keep him going. DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 8. His finish on the first goal was not easy, especially with all three of Verona’s center-backs converging on him. But his first touch was excellent to set him up for the finish. A coolly taken penalty gave him the brace, and he continued to use his movement off the ball to open spaces elsewhere. He also had a couple of key defensive contributions, including a block on a direct free kick and a pair of clearances. SUBS DOUGLAS LUIZ - 6. The biggest impression I got from his shift Monday night is that Douglas Luiz is a strong boy. He repeatedly fended off defenders as they tried to get the ball off him, standing his ground and simply refusing to be moved. He’ll get more minutes to show off soon enough. JONAS ROUHI - NR. ............ PIERRE KALULU - NR. ............ DANILO - NR. Got a little tangled up with Bremer at one point, but it’s good to see the captain back on the field. LORENZO ANGHELÈ - NR. Got his own debut as he provided some fresh legs for the last few minutes of the match. MANAGER ANALYSIS It’s going to take several weeks to unpack just how many wrinkles Thiago Motta can throw at an opponent, but we saw a couple today. Chief among them was the positioning of Juve’s wide players. Cambiaso especially seemed to be encouraged to pinch into the middle, effectively occupying Yildiz’s space whenever the Turk went out wide. Savona also moved inside with some frequency, often showing up in the right channel to trail the play at the back post, kind of like Stephan Lichtsteiner used to do. The press was also a major focus agianst Hellas Verona. Obviously, it produced the opening goal after forcing the turnover, and Juve continued to press when the opportunity presented itself even as the game entered its final minutes. It’s a massive change from the reactive tactics of Allegri, and shows just how different this version of Juve is going to turn out to be. Overall the key difference between Motta and Allegri is the willingness to take risks. For Allegri, the idea was anathema. For Motta, it’s an essential part of his winning formula. “Pressing the opponents means taking a risk, because you open up spaces,” he said during his post-match remarks, “but it is ultimately worth the risk because you can win it back high up the field and go straight towards goal.” That element of risk is also present in his team selection. From the shock selection of Mbangula that looks, at least at first, to have unearthed a real gem, to trusting Savona with his first start, Motta has taken some decisions that Allegri generally avoided, and it’s been paying dividends so far. Carriera Inizia la sua carriera nella Sanremese – così come il suo futuro compagno di squadra al Carpi Riccardo Gagliolo – rimanendoci per due stagioni. Passa poi al Savona disputando una buona stagione, e nell'estate del 2010 firma per il Carpi, dove contribuisce alla doppia promozione dalla Lega Pro Seconda Divisione alla Serie B. Il debutto ufficiale in Serie B avviene il 7 settembre 2013 fuori casa contro lo Spezia. L'anno successivo, durante la stagione 2014-2015, contribuisce alla storica promozione in Serie A del Carpi, giocando 30 partite e segnando 2 reti, che gli hanno valso il rinnovo di contratto con i biancorossi fino al giugno 2019. Nell'ultimo giorno di mercato dell'estate del 2015 viene ceduto in prestito al Novara (22 presenze e 1 gol), nonostante avesse espresso la volontà di restare al Carpi. Dopo soli 6 mesi però, nel gennaio 2016, il Carpi decide di riprenderlo e Poli gioca 10 partite in Serie A, esordendo contro il Palermo e sfiorando la salvezza con la compagine emiliana, retrocessa per un punto all'ultima giornata ai danni dello stesso Palermo. Resta in rosa anche per la Serie B 2016-2017, prolungando il contratto fino al 30 giugno 2020. Dopo quattro stagioni con la maglia biancorossa numero 5, decide di cambiare definitivamente per la casacca numero 13, che aveva indossato anche nei mesi precedenti, poiché la 5 era sulle spalle di Cristian Zaccardo. Al termine del campionato, che vede i biancorossi raggiungere i playoff, Poli è titolare nell'epica semifinale contro il Frosinone, vinta dal Carpi in 9 uomini, e sarà titolare al posto di Gagliolo anche nelle due finali perse contro il Benevento, lasciando il campo al 51' della seconda per dare spazio a Kevin Lasagna. Nel 2016-2017 ottiene il maggior numero di presenze stagionali della sua carriera, ben 43. Dopo la cessione al Perugia di Raffaele Bianco, Poli diventa il nuovo capitano del Carpi per la stagione di Serie B 2017-2018, nella quale supera le 200 partite ufficiali con la maglia biancorossa. Il 3 febbraio 2018, in occasione della sfida contro la Salernitana, indossa una fascia speciale da capitano, in ricordo di Andrea Fortunato, Piermario Morosini e Flavio Falzetti (calciatori scomparsi prematuramente). Nella stagione di Serie B 2018-2019 viene confermato capitano. Il 16 settembre 2018 segna di testa nella sconfitta per 4-1 al Bentegodi contro l'Hellas Verona. Poli, autore in totale di 3 gol in un campionato che vedrà il Carpi retrocedere in Serie C da ultimo in classifica, va a bersaglio anche nel pareggio per 1-1 contro l'Ascoli (colpo di tacco) e nella sconfitta interna per 2-1 contro il Crotone. Dopo la retrocessione degli emiliani, con cui ha messo insieme in tutto 265 presenze e 12 gol, il 26 agosto 2019 viene acquistato a titolo definitivo dall’Entella, club ligure neo-promosso in B. Segna il suo primo gol con la nuova maglia alla sua seconda da titolare in Entella-Cosenza 1-0 del 29 ottobre. Si ripete quattro giorni dopo, ancora nei minuti finali, in Salernitana-Entella 2-1; in tutto saranno 5 i gol segnati in 16 presenze di campionato. Nella stagione seguente segna in una sola occasione in 27 partite di campionato che termina con la retrocessione dell'Entella. Il 9 agosto 2021 viene ceduto a titolo definitivo alla Juventus U23, la seconda squadra juventina militante in Serie C. Nella prima stagione, da fuori quota e capitano della squadra, colleziona 28 presenze totali e andando a segno una volta in campionato contro il Piacenza.
