Oct 31, 2011 No-one is stating it directly and Claudio Ranieri and his players are flat out denying it, but Juventus' 2-1 win over Inter in Week 10 could have a significant bearing in ending the Nerazzurri's hopes of a credible title challenge. As a game with consideration to what had preceded it in 2011-12, the Nerazzurri can reflect on a paradox of a performance. Putting in a display that their Coach rightly cited as demonstrating a higher level of determination and competitiveness through to the final whistle than previous in the season, they were still second best. Where Ranieri risked a high defensive line, Antonio Conte had the players capable of regularly hitting it on the counter-attack. Where Inter had Wesley Sneijder playing balls over Juve's sometimes equally high defensive line, Inter did not have the same pace as their opponents in attack to take full advantage. Paralleled, where Inter also looked to regularly provide balls into the box, Juve surprised everyone to win an uncharacteristically imperious 79 per cent of aerial duels – a season high by some margin. Interestingly as well, La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport remarked of Juve's greater fight in midfield, to not only have the attitude to constantly press their opponents and shut out space, but to also demonstrate the greater physical fitness between the two teams as the game came to a close. In short, Juve were fitter and had the right type of players and collective attitude to expose Inter's weaknesses. Similarly, and perhaps frustratingly for the Nerazzurri faithful, Inter did not have the capacity to fully test aspects to Juve's play that still remained far from refined. Those looser aspects to Juve's play were perhaps why the Turin side again repeated the message post-match that they themselves are not necessarily confirmed title challengers. However, post-match debate is on the worsening challenge of their opponents as Week 10's defeat statistically leaves Inter looking increasingly out of the fight. La Beneamata's fifth defeat of this season has come three-and-a-half months earlier than their fifth defeat of last season. Whilst they were at one stage 13 points off the top of the table in 2010-11 compared with an 11-point deficit they are now faced with, Claudio Ranieri's Inter do not have two games in hand to fall back on as Leonardo's Inter had. Serie A have not had a club crowned as League champions after losing more than four games for the last 18 years. Significantly, it is not the gap to Juve but to Milan that is causing concern. Eyes are being drawn to the respective Milanese sides' fixture lists from now until January 15's derby, with everything suggesting an extension of Milan's nine-point advantage by then is increasingly likely. This renewed faith in Milan's capacity comes after a weekend performance that saw Massimiliano Allegri fall back on the collective experience rather than dynamism of his team. Where the Diavolo's renewed form has been glimpsed in recent games, a superior know-how came to the fore on Saturday evening to put a spirited but fault-ridden Roma to the sword. Indeed, Luis Enrique's men recorded more possession, more attempts on goal and were able to penetrate the opposition penalty box on more occasions, but it was Milan that capitalised when mistakes crept into the Giallorossi's play. Three points also went to Catania for taking full advantage of Mario Santana's sending off for two yellows to consequently dominate their home match with Napoli. Despite the game being played on Saturday evening to accommodate an extra day's rest for the Azzurri's midweek Champions League participation, Walter Mazzarri again rested several players, particularly in defence. Vincenzo Montella's side are now level with the Partenopei, having lost just once so far this season. Elsewhere, focus was on the future of two Coaches going into Week 10's Sunday afternoon fixtures. Where Sinisa Mihajlovic responded to the first must-win of a crucial double-header for Fiorentina with a 1-0 win over Genoa, Marco Giampaolo's Cesena fell 2-0 to Parma. After a poor 4-1 defeat to Siena – the first time in over two-and-a-half years that the Robur have scored more than three times in a Serie A match – his Chievo are now without a win since September, subsequently slipping eight places in the League table. It has pulled them into a relegation battle that involves Lecce and Novara after they couldn't be separated on Sunday, but remarkably for the time being does not involve Bologna. Three wins from Stefano Pioli's first four games sets things up nicely for his 'return' to Palermo. The Rosanero, meanwhile, again lost away from home – this time to Udinese – to continue their Jekyll and Hyde progress under Devis Mangia. Despite winning every home game, the club have picked up just one point from a possible 15 away. Indeed, where paradox sums up Inter's improved performance but worsened League situation and Palermo's mismatch of form, it also describes Lazio's similar disagreement between home and away fixtures. Oct 31, 2011 It has not been the greatest week in football's bid to prove it has moved with the times. In Britain, the England captain has spent the last week fending off accusations of racism against another player, while Saturday night brought Inter fans' attempts to drag the game back into the gutter with a scandalous banner mocking the Heysel dead. John Terry's clash with Anton Ferdinand has been all over the news since last Sunday's west London derby between QPR and Chelsea at Loftus Road. His apparent catcall of "you black c***" in the direction of Ferdinand – the brother of an England team-mate and supposed friend, no less – has resulted in a week of recriminations and denials which are likely to split dressing rooms once more. Terry rightly remains innocent until proven guilty, and while it is hardly the first time his qualities as a morally upstanding member of the community have been called into question, this is by far the gravest accusation to be levelled at him. Judgements should be saved until an outcome has been determined, and it remains to be seen whether video evidence passed on by Sky to the FA provides any further clarity on what actually happened amid the claim and counter-claim of the past week. But the very intimation that racism is still an issue on Premier League pitches has to be of huge concern to the authorities involved, particularly against the backdrop of the significant strides made by the 'Kick Racism Out of Football' campaign since its founding in 1993. Now is not the time to be complacent about racists in the game, especially given the wave of condemnation which has come with the accusations. That needs to be used to drive home the message further regardless of the verdict in this case. If Terry is proven guilty, he should have the book thrown at him. His alleged behaviour has no place in society, let alone in multicultural Chelsea and England dressing rooms. Just as the dust appeared to be settling on the Terry affair for a weekend at least, Saturday night's Derby d'Italia brought the latest chapter in the long-running battle between Inter and Juventus supporters. However, the home fans' banner mocking the 39 people who died at Heysel went way beyond friendly rivalry, dragging football back to a bygone age from which every single person in the world should be trying to steer it away. The banner, reading 'Acciaio scadente: nostalgia dell'Heysel' (Poor quality steel – nostalgia for Heysel) was in relation to the recent news that there had been apparent concerns over the structural integrity of the new Juventus Stadium in Turin. To mock opposing fans regarding results on the field or to make signs pertaining to the continued arguments over Calciopoli are one thing, but to use the deaths of 39 innocent people for supposed amusement is entirely another. "Poor quality steel - nostalgia for Heysel" - What the Inter banner read Last season there was talk that Tottenham fans arriving at San Siro for their Champions League clash with Inter would have flags and banners confiscated should they contain any religious symbols, yet this weekend the Nerazzurri followers were allowed into the ground with something which calls into question the depths some football fans are willing to go to in order to claim some sort of terrace victory. That Juventus supporters responded with chants mocking the late Giacinto Facchetti – an Inter playing legend and club president – was neither big nor clever. That the Nerazzurri fans spent time thinking up the wording, spraying it onto a banner, and – presumably – going to great lengths to smuggle it into the stadium, is utterly deplorable. Inter should be hit with massive fines; big enough to cause serious ructions, both for the actions of their fans and for the incompetence of their stewarding practices in allowing the banner to get past. If the sign was indeed checked outside, the very mention of Heysel should have caused alarm bells. While European football's leading lights come together once more this week for another Champions League matchday, two of the top countries on the continent have much more serious issues to address. The Nerazzurri faithful displayed a banner with the text "Acciaio scadente: nostalgia dell'Heysel" (translated: 'Poor quality iron - nostalgia for Heysel'), a reference to the Heysel Stadium disaster in Brussels, Belgium in 1985 where 39 Juventus fans tragically died after a wall collapsed before the start of the European Cup final between the Turin giants and Liverpool. This in turn led to a five year ban for English clubs in Europe, and a number of Liverpool fans prosecuted for manslaughter. The placard was allegedly a response to the news that the Turin authorities have opened an investigation into the structure of the recently opened Juventus Stadium.
