Spoils shared between Juventus and Roma in tense battle at the Olimpico With a Champions League spot at stake, Juve and Roma stood toe to toe but neither could come up with a winner. Sunday’s game between Juventus and Roma at the Stadio Olimpico had plenty of storyline behind it. First and foremost, there was the fact that both teams were desperately trying to secure a place for themselves in next year’s Champions League. There was also the contrast between the two teams in the second half of the season. Roma had cast off an old coach whose tactics were stuck in generations past, and his replacement had changed the team’s tactics and led a flying run of form that had only recently started to end. Juve, on the other hand, had kept a similar coach in place even after an incredible collapse that he seemed completely unable to arrest — one that was still ongoing as of this writing. There was also the side plot of two ex-Juve men in Roma’s starting lineup, looking to get a jab in on their old club. All those stories showed up to a degree, but in the end it was the game itself that ended up being the main talking point in the end. ............ With the end of the season coming closer and closer and Champions League qualification hanging in the balance, the Bianconeri and Giallorossi traded blows like a pair of prize fighters in the middle of the ring. By the middle of the second half they were treating viewers to a thrilling contest that, for the neutral, was quite entertaining, and for the partisan was liable to put you on beta blockers. In the end, thanks to some epic goalkeeping and brilliant goal-line clearances, neither side was able to land the knockout blow that they needed. The 1-1 draw at the final whistle was a better result for Juve than Roma, but still short of what either team wanted to clinch their spot in the top five. ............ The game’s opening salvos came from Juve. Three minutes in Chiesa took a pass from Cambiaso, cut inside, and unleashed a shot for the far post that flew over, but not by that much. Four minutes later Bremer pressed Dybala off the ball deep in the Roma half. The ball was fed into Chiesa, who dribbled into the box and squared it for Vlahovic, who had to backtrack to pick it up but still had good shooting position, but he yanked it just wide. Of course, seeing this early sign of life, Allegri proceeded to do how Allegri do, and Juve began to drop back into their own half. ............ Roma’s long spell of possession led Kristensen to send Baldanzi to the byline. Baldanzi — whose equalizer against Juve while he was still at Empoli was perhaps the trigger for this whole mess — pulled the ball back to Dybala, who laid it back further still to Cristante. The midfielder’s shot actually beat Szczesny, but Gatti was right there to touch it away from the line. While this technically counted as a goal line clearance for some stat sites, his touch redirected the ball straight to Lukaku, who made no mistake burying the rebound. ............ But Juve had some fight in them, and they had a Federico Chiesa who, as it would turn out, was absolutely on fire. Chiesa lit the fuse when Juve recycled a corner kick back to him. He put Pellegrini on his backside with a quick cut and sent in a gorgeous cross, putting it on a dime for Bremer, who outjumped two defenders and hit a powerful header that went past Svilar almost before he could react to tie the score. ............ Juve had the better of things through the opening phases of the first half. Things changed right around the hour mark, when Weah took out Paredes while trying to get a pass off after a heavy touch. Practically every Roma player surrounded referee Andrea Colombo begging him to show Weah, who had been booked in the game’s first 10 minutes, a second yellow card. Colombo, who overall had a wretched night, made the right call in this instance and refused to go to his pocket, and Allegri immediately put Filip Kostic onto the field to keep Weah from actually getting that second yellow. ............ The game’s final phases brought the goalkeepers to the fore. In the 79th minute, Locatelli ran on to a loose defensive header and bounced it towards the goal. It was headed just under the crossbar before Svilar adjusted and tipped it over the bar. At the very end of normal time the Belgian did it again, somehow getting a hand up after Moise Kean put a perfect header on a Kostic corner kick. Roma, who lead the league in goals after the 75-minute mark, nearly added to that total deep into stoppage time, when a bad giveaway by Gatti was moved downfield and put into the channel perfectly for Tammy Abraham, who had a clear shooting lane but couldn’t get the ball past an onrushing Szczesny, who made himself big and blocked the ball with his legs. LE PAGELLE WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 6.5. A couple of his punches could’ve been better, and he was beaten a couple times only to be bailed out by blocks, but his huge stoppage time save kept the game level and at least got Juve one point. FEDERICO GATTI - 5. His weak clearance gifted Lukaku Roma’s goal, and he made a complete brain fart at the end that could’ve given a second gift of a winner. He needs to eliminate the mental errors like that. BREMER - 7. That towering header was exceptional, the perfect shot that gave the keeper zero shot to react. Kept Lukaku relatively quiet, and was again a force at the back, reading the game well and clearing the ball six times, as well as getting in that crucial block on Pellegrini’s shot. DANILO - 7. His header off the line may have saved the game for Juve, and he was a constant pressence in defense all night long. He finished the day with three tackles and eight clearances and also contributed a pair of key passes at the other end. TIMOTHY WEAH - 5. ............ WESTON McKENNIE - 6. ............ MANUEL LOCATELLI - 5. Only completed 82.1 percent of his passes, which wasn’t good enough for how the game began to develop. He did almost give Juve the win when he was denied by Svilar. I’ve seen people say he should’ve caught the ball more cleanly on that shot, but I wonder if he hadn’t hit it into the ground if it would have hit the target at all. ADRIEN RABIOT - 5.5. ............ ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6. ............ FEDERICO CHIESA - 7.5. The best player on the pitch by a good margin. He was dangerous whenever he had the ball, and no one in Roma’s defense could do anything about it. The cross he put in for Bremer’s goal looked as though he’d picked out an individual pore on his head, and the shot that hit the post would have been one of the goals of the season in the entire league had it gone in. It begs the question: why was he removed from the game? DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 5. Missed his best chance early and didn’t get a whole ton of service the rest of the night. He only touched the ball 15 times in the first half, and 23 times on the whole in 75 minutes. That’s not enough service to your top striker. SUBS FILIP KOSTIC - 5.5. ............ ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 5. ............ MOISE KEAN - 5.5. Only seven touches, but completing a third of your passes ain’t a great look. What was a good look was that last-minute header, which would’ve been a goal had Svilar pulled out a save that was not normal. CARLOS ALCARAZ - NR. ............ MANAGER ANALYSIS Why was Federico Chiesa taken out of the game? Up until that point, there had been little to complain about Allegri’s night. He had gotten the team a little too deep in the lead-up to Lukaku’s goal, but other than that it was a pretty good match. Having Cambiaso on the left helped unlock Chiesa, who combines with him far better than Filip Kostic, who generally takes up the same spaces that Chiesa wants to launch his attacks from. Cambiaso will overlap and underlap with Chiesa and move the defense around, giving him more room to operate. And operate Chiesa did. He was on fire, and Roma simply didn’t have a counter for him. He’d humiliated Kristensen a couple of times, and guys like Llorente didn’t fare much better. And then he was pulled. The way the game was playing out, the only valid justification for that decision is if Chiesa was either hurting or gassed and asked to come out. There was no apparent sign that that was the case. Maybe — maybe — you could make the case that Allegri was trying to adjust to the fact Kostic was in the game and that he and Chiesa don’t work well together. But even then, you’re removing your only true creative player and a guy that — I cannot stress this enough — was absolutely on fire to put a pair of prima punti onto the field, and Kostic did not put nearly enough crosses into the box to justify that move in any case. I have a feeling that had Chiesa stayed on the field, Juventus would have taken the lead at some point. As it was, it took two extraordinary saves from Svilar to keep Juve out and the game level. In the state of grace Chiesa was in tonight, I don’t think Svilar would’ve been able to make enough saves to do that. In taking him off, Allegri may have managed himself out of three points on the night. LOOKING AHEAD Juve will play Salernitana next weekend at a time still to be determined. After that, they head back to Rome to face Atalanta in the Coppa Italia final, then end the season with an away date against Bologna and a home finale against Monza. Juventus Player Ratings vs Roma: Explosive Chiesa Shines Entertaining Draw Juventus (3-5-2) Wojciech Szczesny – 6.5 The Juventus defenders were all over the place at times, which didn’t help the Pole’s cause. But still made some vital stops, including an injury-time save on Tammy Abraham. Federico Gatti – 6 The Italian defender made a goal-line clearance to deny Bryan Cristante, but only to present the ball on silver plate to Lukaku. Found mild success on his attacking forays, but was dispossessed late in the match which almost gifted Abraham the winner. Gleison Bremer – 6.5 The Brazilian defender was no match in the air for Lukaku, and was also outplayed by Paulo Dybala on the opener, but atoned himself by nodding home the winner with a nice header. Danilo – 6 It was a mixed bag for the Juventus captain who struggled to contain Lukaku and Tommaso Baldanzi at times, but still made significant interceptions, including a goal-line clearance on Kristensen’s shot. Timothy Weah – 5.5 ............ Weston McKennie – 6 The American ran his socks off whether in midfield on the right flank, but his touch lacked quality. Manuel Locatelli – 6 ............ Adrien Rabiot – 6.5 The former PSG man produced one of his most inspirational displays in a long time. Trotted forward like a crazy horse with the ball at his feet, leaving his opponents in the dust. But still lacked the final product. Andrea Cambiaso – 6 ............ Dusan Vlahovic – 5.5 The Serbian could have put Juventus ahead early on but couldn’t hit the target. Worked hard for his team, but couldn’t inflict any damage. Federico Chiesa – 7 The Euro 2020 star provided the assist for Bremer’s equalizer with a sublime cross with his left foot. He almost scored himself with the same foot after dribbling past Rasmus Kristensen but his ferocious strike was denied by the post. Simply the Bianconeri’s main source of inspiration. Juventus 1 - Roma 1: Initial reaction and random observations Things somewhat surprisingly end with just two goals, with both goalkeepers making some highlight-reel kind of saves. Under normal circumstances, Juventus recording a 1-1 draw against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico wouldn’t be the worst result in the world. It was a matchup that certainly had a little bit of everything, and the one that left plenty of people saying “if you were a neutral, then you would have really enjoyed this one!” or something along those lines. ............ An absolutely brutal start to Sunday’s trip to the Italian capital was salvaged by Bremer’s latest thunderous header to even the score before halftime. Somehow, even is how it stayed, with both teams having more than just a couple of chances to pull back in front. But thanks to the efforts of Wojciech Szczesny and Mile Svilar in each team’s goal, the two goalkeepers didn’t let the plethora of chances hit the back of the net, as the latest night where Juventus didn’t have the best of luck in front of goal came to the fore once again. ............ Ultimately, it means that Juventus have to wait yet another week to officially secure their place in next season’s Champions League. The thing is, with all of the dropped points over the last 14 Serie A fixtures, Juve trying to do it against an already-relegated Salernitana — and trying to do so at the Allianz Stadium, no less! — doesn’t seem as routine as you may think it is. It’s just been that kind of second half of the season. It’s just been a three months in which Juventus not winning has been the constant theme that has absolutely sucked all of the good vibes from the season. And much in the same fashion as we saw last weekend against Milan, this was certainly a winnable game for Juventus — especially in the second half — but they just couldn’t get over that final hump to break the deadlock. Some of that had to do with Svilar doing pretty impressive things in goal. Part of it was Federico Chiesa’s brilliant solo effort needing just a little more bend on it so it goes into the side netting and not smashing off the far post. Part of it was simply not taking advantage of the chances that they did have, Svilar or no Svilar. It all just ended up being the same kind of deal that we saw last weekend. Juventus could have won. Maybe they should have won with how they played in the second half. It was certainly there for the taking after a first half in which they were definitely not playing as well as Roma were. But that all-elusive second goal never arrived — and because of it this three-month stretch of barely winning anything no matter if it’s Serie A or Coppa Italia. ............ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS Hey, guess what? Juventus are one step closer to securing that Champions League spot. If you didn’t know, Max is here to tell you about it once again. You know, the same thing you’ve been hearing all season. At this point, I was hoping it would be a thing of the past. But with three games remaining, we’re left to hear the same kind of quote about the same topic for at least another week. It’s exhausting. There was a moment after the final whistle where Szczesny and Daniele De Rossi — who, remember, were teammates during Tek’s two-year spell in Rome — had what looked to be a brief conversation and then a laugh. Guessing DDR had a thing or two to say about the couple of big saves Szczesny made late in the game to keep things even. Oh to be a little gremlin sitting on Tek’s shoulder for that exchange. ............ Juventus attempted 161 passes in the first half. Juventus completed 136 passes in the first half. I don’t know about you guys, but it’s pretty hard to score goals when you barely have the ball! Dusan Vlahovic touched the ball 15 times in the first half, And even with absolute scraps coming his way, he still had one of the best scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes. Could we be seeing the reemergence of Federico Chiesa in the pre-injury kind of form? He was great off the bench against Milan, and he followed that up with the kind of man of the match performance against Roma that leaves you wondering about where he’s heading form-wise with the Euros approaching. Some of the runs he made — and especially on the one that saw him nearly score — were those classic kind of Chiesa runs. That’s what gives you hope. On the not-so-good scale: Juventus’ defending on Roma’s goal ... YEAH, NOT GOOD. Like, seriously, think about what happened: Paulo Dybala spun Bremer around multiple times, Federico Gatti basically saw his “clearance” attempt go right to Romelu Lukaku and it’s not like the rest of the midfielders/defenders were all that great either. It was just bad all the way around. A better moment from Bremer: his goal where he just hung in the air and got that much pace on the ball. It came off a brilliant assist from Chiesa, too — another one of those moments where he put Lorenzo Pellegrini on skates and put in a great cross with his weaker foot that Bremer thundered home. Good stuff, man. Can you imagine what Moise Kean scoring his first goal of the season just before stoppage time would have been like? And a goal that clinched Juventus’ Champions League spot too? Oh man, the internet might have exploded. ............ Juventus draw against Roma and wait for Champions League goes on Juventus played to a 1-1 draw against AS Roma this evening, keeping their hopes alive for qualification to next season’s Champions League. Federico Chiesa signalled early on that it would be a challenging day for AS Roma with a long-range shot after just three minutes, although it flew wide. ............ Juve failed to heed those warnings, and Lukaku scored the opener after 15 minutes. Lukaku again missed another chance, and it was all Roma in the opening 20 minutes. ............ But on the 30th-minute mark, Chiesa had his shot blocked, and Gleison Bremer equalised for Juve from the ensuing corner a minute later. Ten minutes later, Manuel Locatelli failed to bury his header, becoming the latest player to miss a good chance. Immediately after the break, Chiesa had the chance to put Juve ahead, but he missed from a great position. ............ In the 62nd minute, Chiesa should have done better as he bent a shot, but it wasn’t difficult for Mile Svilar to save. Svilar saved again from Danilo, who brilliantly got away from his marker to attack a corner. ............ Kristensen could have scored the next goal after 69 minutes, but Wojciech Szczesny denied him with a stunning save. After 76 minutes, Max Allegri decided to bring on Arkadiusz Milik and Moise Kean as he searched for the winning goal. Four minutes later, Svilar pulled off another stunning save from Locatelli to keep the game level. Carlos Alcaraz was the next Juventus player to join the match moments before Svilar brilliantly denied Kean. ............ Both teams tried to find the winner, but it never came as Juve dropped more points in the race for a Champions League place. Official Juventus team to face Roma – Vlahovic and Chiesa start Juventus travel to the Stadio Olimpico to face Roma and this is the team that Max Allegri has selected for the game. ............ Juventus must secure points today to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. While it’s highly likely that Juventus have already accumulated enough points to qualify for next season’s elite European competition, there is still a mathematical possibility that they could finish outside the top five. Roma is also in the battle for a top-five spot, with Atalanta closely trailing them for that fifth position. A loss today for Roma could have a disastrous impact on their Champions League ambitions. ............ Roma vs. Juventus match preview Over the next two weeks, Juventus will make two very important trips to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The first of those trips, could go a long way in finally wrapping up a Champions League spot, while the other will be Juve’s one and final chance to win some silverware before the 2023-24 season comes to an end and a summer of expected change arrives. That second trip to Rome — and the trophy that potentially comes with it — is very much on the horizon. But that first jaunt back over to the Italian capital is very much right in front of Max Allegri’s squad. They will actually face a Rome-based club this time around, as Juve open up the final four fixtures of the 2023-24 season against a very different kind of Roma squad than the one they saw a few days after Christmas. Four months ago, not only did Juventus’ form look a whole lot different then it does now, but the meeting between Allegri and Jose Mourinho pitted two of the most risk-averse managers in Serie A. But now, with Mourinho gone after he was sacked just a couple of weeks after the 1-0 loss in Turin, former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi has rolled in and brought a new kind of energy that has seen the Giallorossi go from outside of a European spot to now sitting in Serie A’s fifth and final Champions League spot. ............ Both Juventus and Roma are coming off disappointing results the last time out. Albeit, they came on very different kinds of stages considering where both teams are these days. Juventus dropped points for an astonishing 11th time in their last 13 league fixtures last weekend against a shorthanded AC Milan side that featured a second-string defense. A Champions League place is something that should have been secured weeks ago, but because of this form over the last three months, they’ve left it to the last four games of the season. And with who Juve have to face over these final four games, it’s far from a certainty that they will wrap it all up this weekend and have the chance to focus on the Coppa Italia final when they face an already relegated Salernitana next weekend. The hope, of course, is that Juve can take care of what they need to and get their Champions League spot secured come Sunday night. The reality is that Juve are playing so poorly over these last three months — and it’s not like things are getting much better — that expecting them to beat good times is stretching it. ............ How different have things been? Let’s take a look! Since Juventus’ draw with Empoli on Jan. 27 kicked off this tailspin, this is how it’s gone: Juventus: 13 games played, 13 points earned Roma: 13 games played, 27 points earned One team has seen their run over these last three months save their season (even though Sunday’s game is very much a must-win when it comes to the Champions League). The other team has seen such a bright season go to absolute hell within the span of a couple of months, with just about everything feeling grateful for all those points from the first half of the 2023-24 campaign. I don’t want to think what it would be like these final four games if Juventus hadn’t won as many games as they did up until the final weekend of January. Neither do you. So let’s just hope that Juve can get this Champions League spot wrapped up and be done with it all. TEAM NEWS It’s not exactly been the best birthday weekend for Kenan Yildiz, who turned 19 years old Friday. The young Turk will miss the trip to Rome after coming down with gastroenteritis, according to Allegri. Yildiz had hoped to recover in time, but could only train away from the group on his birthday and then didn’t train at all on Saturday, Allegri said. Alex Sandro is the other injured player who will be forced to watch the Juve-Roma matchup back in Turin. Sandro, on the cusp of breaking Pavel Nedved’s record for most appearances by a foreign player at Juventus, suffered a muscle injury in training earlier this week. The two suspended midfielders, Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba, are still suspended. However, Fagioli is now a little more than two weeks away from seeing his suspension come to an end on May 20. That would make him eligible to play in Juventus’ season finale against Monza. ............ JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH Things haven’t exactly been all that great for Weston McKennie lately. ............ Since he recorded back-to-back games with two assists in early March, McKennie has recorded just one more assist — in Juve’s win over Lazio in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semifinal — and just hasn’t had the same kind of effectiveness that he’s had for the majority of his starts this season. The easy reason to think things have happened in this way is because the dude is tired — which is very much valid at this point of the season. McKennie has played the second-most amount of minutes of any Juventus outfield player and the third most of anybody in bianconero if you throw Wojciech Szczesny into the mix. ............ But Juve need McKennie to be more like the player who was such a pleasant surprise to close this season. Especially when you’re going up a team like Roma who are going to play with an aggressive midfield that aren’t afraid to go right at you. It’s a big test for Juve, but also a big one for McKennie as his team is on the doorstep of Champions League qualification. MATCH INFO When: Sunday, May 5, 2024. Where: Stadio Olimpico, Rome, Italy. AS Roma vs Juventus: Preview and Prediction AS Roma, who face Juventus this weekend, have been resilient under Daniele De Rossi, losing only four games since the legendary former midfielder took over. They did suffer their latest defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen, who took a brilliant 2-0 lead in the Europa League semifinal first leg in Rome. ............ The fact that Italy have a fifth Champions League spot makes the pressure less on Juventus heading into the final few games of their season. From being title contenders at one stage of the season, the Bianconeri are now fighting tooth and nail to consolidate their third place, as Massimiliano Allegri will not want any more hiccups along the way. Juventus had a golden opportunity even to go close to second place in Milan, but they could only manage a draw with the Rossoneri on the previous matchday. Should Milan win at the weekend, they might race away with the runners-up spot. Hence, Juventus must avoid a defeat against Roma to keep a stronghold of a top-four place. But in that scenario, they might loosen their grip on the third spot with Bologna lurking closely behind. Overall, the three Champions League positions could still be interchanged before the season ends, with Roma, Juventus and Bologna all hunting for supremacy, with Atalanta and Lazio in the mix. Team News & Tactics AS Roma Daniele De Rossi will have a triple boost as he welcomes Zeki Celik from his European suspension. At the same time, Diego Llorente and Leandro Paredes will be available again after serving domestic bans. ............ Probable Lineup (4-3-3): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Llorente, Angelino; Bove, Paredes, Pellegrini; Baldanzi, Lukaku, El Shaarawy Juventus Apart from Mattia De Sciglio, Kenan Yildiz and Alex Sandro, Massimiliano Allegri has no fitness concerns with his squad. So, he will only look to make a few changes. Allegri will line up with the usual back three: Federico Gatti, Gleison Bremer, and Danilo, who are taking shape, with Andrea Cambiaso and Filip Kostic stationed in those wing-back roles for Juventus. Similarly, Allegri will not look to make any alterations to his midfield, with Weston McKennie, Adrien Rabiot, and Manuel Locatelli firmly settled in their respective roles. Meanwhile, Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa will continue to lead the attack for the Bianconeri, with the former still harbouring hopes of catching Lautaro Martinez. Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Vlahovic, Chiesa Key Stats There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 12 of Roma’s last 15 games in Serie A. AS Roma are winless in three of their last four matches in all competitions. AS Roma can go within three points of Juventus with a win on Sunday. Juventus have drawn their last three matches in Serie A. Juventus have only two wins from their last 13 league games. Player to Watch Dusan Vlahovic ............ There are still some games to go, although Vlahovic might have to be highly prolific in those to stand a chance to catch Lautaro Martinez. While there’s less chance for that to happen, he can still propel Juventus’s chances of finishing third or even second with some stellar displays in the remaining games, starting with the visit to Rome. Prediction AS Roma 1-1 Juventus AC Milan tried on the last matchday to ensure that Juventus did not get closer to them on the table, and the Bianconeri might repeat the pattern against AS Roma. Drawing this game will be a good result for the Turin giants, as they have to protect their place in the top four. They might open the gates for Bologna to take over, but this is a risk Massimiliano Allegri might be willing to take. AS Roma will come under pressure heading into this clash as they are eager to get ahead of Atalanta and Lazio, the chasing pack for fifth place in the Champions League. Hence, while they might try to take advantage at home, Juventus have the ingredients and defensive quality to ensure this game ends in a draw. Ex- Serie A striker explains why Juventus is struggling for form The last three months have been difficult for Juventus in terms of form, as they dropped from the top of the Serie A table to being close to finishing outside the top four. ............ Despite this, Juventus still has the chance to finish this season inside the Champions League places and win the Coppa Italia. Former Serie A star Emanuele Calaiò has spoken about their struggles in the last few weeks and seems to know why life is hard for Juventus on the pitch. He said: “There could also be a physical decline. We are in May, with four matches remaining. In May, those who are still well score more points. Just think of Atalanta, who still get points because they are physically very well. Against Roma, however, the Juve could be favoured precisely because the Giallorossi spent a lot in the match against Bayer.” ............ Preview: Roma vs. Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups After suffering a rare home defeat in midweek, Roma will try to retain their grip on a top-five place in Serie A when welcoming Juventus to Stadio Olimpico on Sunday. Both sides are intent on claiming a place in next season's Champions League, but neither has secured their spot just yet. Match preview For the second season running, Roma are taking on Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League semi-finals, and the two clubs reconvened in the Italian capital for Thursday's first leg. The new German champions were seeking revenge for losing last year, and they not only continued their record-breaking unbeaten streak at Roma's expense but also took a giant stride towards meeting either Marseille or Atalanta BC in the final. ............ Following a 1-0 victory in December's reverse fixture, Juventus have won four of their last six Serie A matches against Roma - keeping a clean sheet in half - so they will have a psychological advantage heading into the clubs' latest encounter. The Bianconeri are now only six points above their hosts in the table, though, as a once-promising campaign has slid into stagnant mediocrity over the past few months. Having drawn each of their last three matches - versus Torino, Cagliari and, most recently, AC Milan - Max Allegri's men are now glancing nervously over their shoulders at the teams below them. Juventus have averaged just 1.27 points in the second half of this season - their worst such rate since 2010 - and Allegri's future has naturally been called into question. ............ Despite a dismal run of two wins from 13 in the league, the Bianconeri also remain on track to secure a spot in next term's new-look Champions League, and Allegri will claim that represents success for a club undergoing a painful period of transition. ............ Team News In addition to having Zeki Celik back from a UEFA suspension, Diego Llorente and Leandro Paredes are both available to Daniele De Rossi after serving bans in Roma's draw with Napoli last weekend. ............ One candidate for a rest is injury-prone forward Paulo Dybala, who played seven seasons for Juve from 2015 to 2022, making 293 appearances and scoring 115 goals across all competitions; he has been directly involved in 40 goals from only 50 league games since leaving Turin. Dybala and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic have played a part in the most Serie A strikes this calendar year, with both players being involved in 12 goals since the start of 2024; Vlahovic should partner Federico Chiesa or Kenan Yildiz up front on Sunday. The Bianconeri's only injury absentee will be Alex Sandro, who is sidelined by a calf problem, so Max Allegri is set to name a similar XI to that which held Milan goalless last time out. Chiesa could replace Yildiz, and Weston McKennie may come in for his fellow American Timothy Weah, but no further changes are expected. Roma possible starting lineup: Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Ndicka, Angelino; Cristante, Paredes, Pellegrini; Dybala, Lukaku, El Shaarawy Juventus possible starting lineup: Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Chiesa, Vlahovic We say: Roma 1-1 Juventus While Juventus have lost all momentum are stuttering towards the end of another troubled season, distracted Roma may have one eye on turning their Europa League semi-final tie around. The hosts also have a woeful record against Italy's other top clubs, so Juve can record a fourth straight Serie A draw. Preview: Roma vs Juventus – Team News, Lineups & Prediction Sunday’s Serie A program closes out at the Stadio Olimpico with a blockbuster clash between top-four hopefuls Roma and third-placed Juventus. While the visitors have one foot in next season’s Champions League, the hosts still have work to do to secure a coveted top-five finish. Roma became the latest side to fall victim to Bayer Leverkusen’s dominant run as Daniele De Rossi lost the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie 2-0 at home on Thursday. With their hopes of reaching back-to-back finals narrowed to a minimum, Giallorossi’s best chance of booking a seat at Europe’s top table next term is through Serie A. ............ Despite being in a more comfortable position than Roma, Juventus will be desperate to scoop up points at the Olimpico following a scoreless draw against bitter rivals Milan last time out. That was their third consecutive stalemate in Serie A as the pressure continues to pile on under-fie head coach Massimiliano Allegri. ............ Match Preview Roma ............ But the omens are against them. No side has beaten Roma more often than Juventus – 85 times. As four of those defeats came in the last six league meetings between the teams (W1, D1), the home fans await this contest with anxiety. Comfort stems from the fact Roma’s only success in that run saw them emerge 1-0 victors from this corresponding fixture in 2022/23. Juventus Juventus take this trip knowing a win would seal the deal and have them qualified for next season’s Champions League. However, Allegri’s troops have only won two of their last 13 Serie A games (D4, L7). On top of that, they’ve traveled poorly of late, dropping points on six consecutive league travels (D3, L3) since beating Lecce in January. With five of those six winless away league outings seeing them concede the opening goal, Juventus fans would be forgiven for making this journey with trepidation. The visitors can find inspiration in Roma’s long-standing struggles against top Serie A clubs. Their hosts have lost all seven league matches against the sides currently above them in the standings. Team News Roma boss De Rossi can call upon his entire squad for this mouth-watering showdown after Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling recovered from injuries to feature against Leverkusen. Diego Llorente and Leandro Paredes are back from suspension after missing out on the Napoli game. As for Juventus, Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba are unavailable for selection for well-documented reasons. Allegri will also be without long-serving stalwart Alex Sandro, who’s out with a muscle problem. But all other first-team stars, including headline forward Dusan Vlahovic, are ready for this trip. Roma vs Juventus Potential Lineups Roma (4-3-3): Mile Svilar; Zeki Celik, Gianluca Mancini, Diego Llorente, Angelino; Bryan Cristante, Leandro Paredes, Lorenzo Pellegrini; Stephan El Shaarawy, Paulo Dybala, Romelu Lukaku. Juventus (3-5-2): Wojciech Szczesny; Danilo, Gleison Bremer, Federico Gatti; Filip Kostic, Manuel Locatelli, Adrien Rabiot, Weston McKennie, Timothy Weah; Federico Chiesa, Dusan Vlahovic. Roma vs Juventus Prediction Given the stakes, it won’t be surprising if Allegri decides to play another chess match. Juventus and Milan bored fans to death last weekend, but such has been the theme of Bianconeri’s season. We’d back Roma to take advantage of their visitors’ scoring woes to grab an all-important win a month ago. However, they’ve recently shown signs of fatigue, leading us to believe a scoreless draw could be in store. Prediction: Draw Read more -> https://cultofcalcio.com/preview-roma-vs-juventus-team-news-lineups-prediction/

Allegri: ‘Juventus will find angry Roma, difficult and complicated match’ Massimiliano Allegri thanked Daniele De Rossi for his support and underlined his expectations for the tense Serie A clash between his Juventus and Roma. The 56-year-old Italian coach has been under increasing pressure throughout his second spell in Turin and things have continued to exacerbate this season, especially after his side fell away from league leaders Inter in the title race. ............ “We got close well, then we’ll see tomorrow if we can get back to winning ways. Roma have great technical qualities. It will be a fascinating match, but difficult and complicated.” ............ He responded to De Rossi’s sympathetic comments. “I thank Daniele. I played with his father at Livorno. Daniele gave enthusiasm and light-heartedness, even though Mourinho had done an excellent job. We will find a Roma angry at Thursday’s defeat, wanting to return to fighting for the top four places in the league.” Allegri was asked how Juventino he felt. “I have lived in Turin for 10 years now and I have been lucky enough to be part of this great family and great club. The DNA of every club must always be respected.” ............ “Football is difficult to explain. Football must be played, there are times when it goes well and when it doesn’t. We have had a couple of months where we had no forwards. “We don’t have to think about what happened. Tomorrow, we have a good game to play against a strong team. We need to prepare to play a good match.” ............ He touched on if Bologna’s draw with Torino had an effect on him. “As far as the result is concerned, we are ahead, and we have to score points. Our 65 points are not enough for the Champions League. Bologna had a great season, and no one expected this.” ............ De Rossi: ‘Sympathy for Allegri, Roma need exceptional performance against Juventus’ Daniele De Rossi admitted he has ‘sympathy’ for Massimiliano Allegri ahead of Roma’s tense Serie A clash with a wounded Juventus, noting the need for an ‘exceptional performance’. The Giallorossi had the wind in their sails following the former midfielder’s arrival back in January, but their mood has dipped a little over the last week following a tough 2-2 draw with Napoli and a difficult 2-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. ............ He shared his sympathy for Allegri amidst the criticism. “He faces us with respect, he has made the history of Italian football and continues to lead the team at high levels. I feel sympathy for him because he played with my father. Results-based or system-based is a concept that doesn’t exist. ............ “We need another exceptional performance and the fans who must continue to do so push as they always have.” De Rossi spoke about Paulo Dybala’s condition and mindset. “I’ll meet the guys in a few hours, but I don’t really know how they are. Tomorrow morning we’ll take another half hour to finish up and do the last two or three things. Regardless of him being a former player, Paulo is fine. ............ De Rossi remembered some of his matches against Juventus. “I’ve played many. Once we played at Delle Alpi, we lost 2-0 or 2-1 and drew at the last minute, I think with Zebina. I was young and getting a result in such important stadiums seemed like a dream to me. Under the snow, we won in the Coppa Italia and then went through. “I have good memories. The bad one was the match that led to Spalletti’s resignation. It was such a tough week to challenge Juventus at the Olimpico to have our fans.” ............ Motta breaks his silence on his future as Juventus circle the manager Thiago Motta has broken his silence on the rumours surrounding his future as clubs follow the Bologna manager. Juventus is one of the teams reportedly looking to make him their next manager as the Bianconeri work hard to ensure they replace Max Allegri. ............ When Allegri’s term ends, they could ask him to leave the club and bring Motta in as his replacement, but several other clubs also want the Bologna manager. He has to choose the best next step for himself, and when asked about his future on the bench, he said: “My future or that of the players is not important: at the right time we will gather around a table and see if there are the conditions to continue or not to continue.” ............ Cassano accuses Allegri of nepotism: “He had friends writing Di Maria was dead man walking” Antonio Cassano claims Juventus coach Max Allegri relies on his journalist friends to influence the public. ............ In the past, several of Allegri’s detractors have accused him of receiving favors from a section of the press thanks to personal relationships. Cassano echoes this sentiment, accusing the Juventus boss of using nepotism to solidify his position at the club while throwing some of his players under the bus. ............ “There are coaches who have great friends in the press. Allegri has those four or five runaways who look after him, telling them what they have to write,” claimed the former Real Madrid and Roma star. “This gentleman made Paredes pass like a waiter last year, and even let Barrenechea play instead of him. “He made some of his friends write that Di Maria was a dead man walking, when six months earlier he had won a World Cup. ............ “Now Allegri wants to take the credit and so he’s asking his friends to help him stay at the club.” ............
