Juve park the bus after Miretti’s early goal to top Fiorentina ........... Action was scarce in a 90-minute grind that saw Juve take the lead early through Fabio Miretti’s first-ever senior level goal and then refuse to move forward for the entire rest of the match. Fiorentina ended up with 68 percent possession — 73 percent in the first half — and outshot Juve 25-4. They had more corner kicks than Juve had shots. Three Juventus players had double-digit clearances, and all but two of the starters had two or more. This was a straight rearguard action against a team whose defense isn’t particularly great. Massimiliano Allegri choosing this way to go isn’t a surprise anymore, but the complete lack of ambition after the goal ... well, we’ll get to that when we get to it later on in this piece. Juve’s 1-0 win is, ultimately, what matters — at least from a sporting perspective. But it came yet again with an attitude that is concerning. ........... It was apparent within five minutes that Allegri’s plan was to hunker down and absorb pressure. In the eighth minute, we got to see the rather comical sight of Arthur loading up after a corner kick was headed out to him and he proceeded to completely shank a long-range shot that dribbled out for a goal kick. Two minutes later, Juve broke open the score. The goal came on what was probably the only real piece of team passing all day. Once it was finally sent into the Fiorentina half the play was broken open by an excellent layoff pass from Kean to Rabiot, who charged through the middle of the field. His rolled pass to Kostic on the left might have been ripe for an interception, but Parisi misjudged it, allowing the Serb to continue downfield and send in a low cross that was met by Miretti in the left channel, who struck it hard enough to beat Terracciano at the near post. ........... Juve immediately dropped back into what can only be called a siege mentality. There was little in the way of ambition to go forward the rest of the night, as Allegri hunkered down for 80 minutes to protect Miretti’s goal. ........... By the end of the night, Fiorentina had put an astonishing 50 crosses into the box, but had only connected with a teammate on five of them. It got to the point where it became clear Italiano’s team had no other ideas. Even the one time they managed a shot on target in the second half, it was right at Szczesny for an easy save. ........... LE PAGELLE WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 8. Made two really good saves in the first half and completely controlled the box throughout the match. Goalkeepers and their ability to marshal a defense are often overlooked in games like this — it’s what made Gigi Buffon so much better than the rest — and Szczesny was excellent there too, making sure no one was out of place. FEDERICO GATTI - 7. We’re going to have a parade of players with absurd clearance stats, starting with Gatti on nine. He also blocked three shots, and generally did a good job in the low block. His one misstep came late when he let Sottil beat him for pace, but he got picked up by his teammate behind him. BREMER - 8. Immense. Simply immense. He made 13 clearances in this match, also being credited with an interception and two blocked shots. Anytime the ball was in the air in the box, he was usually the one to head it away. Performances like this are why he deserves the number he’s inherited. DANIELE RUGANI - 8. Eleven clearances — 11! — and made perhaps one of the most important defensive interventions of the game when he took the ball off of Ikoné’s head. He is playing some of the best football of his career, and it couldn’t come at a better time with Danilo still out injured. WESTON McKENNIE - 7.5. ........... FABIO MIRETTI - 7. Converted his first career goal with aplomb, and proved to be one of the only people in a Juve kit to be able to dribble through Fiorentina. I’m just so happy he finally has his goal after being so unlucky for so long. MANUEL LOCATELLI - 8. Made 10 clearances and was constantly disrupting Fiorentina’s crosses and occasional runs through the middle. ........... ADRIEN RABIOT - 6.5. ........... FILIP KOSTIC - 6. ........... FEDERICO CHIESA - 5. All he could do for most of the game was stand there waiting for some kind of offensive ball to come to him. MOISE KEAN - 6. Didn’t get too close to goal but played a key role in the opener with an excellent layoff to Rabiot. He’s playing very well at the moment, he just doesn’t have the goals to show for it. SUBS ANDREA CAMBIASO - 5.5. ........... DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 5. ........... ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 5.5. ........... MANAGER ANALYSIS Max is gonna do how Max do. Unfortunately, how Max do is a far cry from how Mad Max did back in the day. Allegri had zero ambition to go after a second goal after Miretti scored, instead chosing to dance on a knife’s edge for 80-plus minutes while Fiorentina tried to break Juve down. They ended up unable to do so, but that doesn’t mean Allegri played this properly. ........... For another, a goal at any point during the second half would probably have finished the game. Juve showed either a lack of ambition or a lack of nerve in terms of going forward, and that attitude, while successful Sunday night, may not be when Juve face better teams. The main point of contention I have with Allegri here is just how deep the team was defending. The team as a whole was so far back that the strikers were often only 30 yards from their own box. That makes it next to impossible to properly trigger a counter, given that the player trying to break out will be swarmed, needing to break through multiple waves of opponents just to have the opportunity to get the ball forward. Playing on the counter is fine, especially given that Juve doesn’t exactly have a player who can break down a block, so attacking on the break is probably their best way to generate offense (unless they can come up with more moves like we saw in Florence!). But to take it to such an extreme as we saw against Fiorentina makes it more difficult for the team to actually get out on the counter, and that leaves you with an absurdly thin margin of error. If Juve make a single mistake, we’re talking about how they dropped points. ........... Against a team like Inter in a few weeks, this defensive performance may not happen. Juve need to have the freedom to get forward a little bit more and score some insurance goals, otherwise they may face a situation where they have to spend excessive stretches of the season being perfect, that and their luck will not hold out all year. LOOKING AHEAD Juve have a home tilt with Cagliari on Saturday before the international break starts Sunday. After the internationals, it’s the biggest crunch time of the year so far as league-leading Inter come sauntering into the Allianz in what may well be a game for first place in Serie A. Juventus 1 - Fiorentina 0: Initial reaction and random observations Old school beat new school and Juventus recorded yet another shutout victory in the process. Could be worse! Throughout the 2023-24, there have been a few times that Juventus manager Max Allegri has been asked about Fabio Miretti’s inability to convert chances in front of goal. His pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Florence was the latest of those instances, with Allegri giving a very direct and sussinct answer as to what has been going on with somebody who is still one of the youngest players in the league “Where can Miretti improve? He needs to score,” Allegri told the assembled media. “It happens to lots of young players — he just needs to get off the mark.” About 36 hours later, we can officially say that Miretti is, at long last, off the mark. In one of the most corto muso matches that will ever corto muso, Miretti’s 10th-minute goal capped an absolutely fantastic team movement from one end of the field to the other and proved to be the only goal in Juventus’ third straight 1-0 win to come out of the October international break. Sunday night’s win over Fiorentina was much like the win over Milan two weeks ago rather than last weekend’s showing against Hellas Verona, with Juventus sitting back and defending like hell once they got said lead through Miretti ... and then defending some more ... and then defending some more. .............. The final numbers were crazy at first glance ... Fiorentina outshot Juventus 25-4 Fiorentina had a 68-32 advantage in possession Fiorentina had twice as many corners (8) as Juventus had total shots (4). I could really go on and on and on, but I will stop there. This was new school vs. old school and the man who is very much old school and defense-first no matter what proved to be the one who won out. And when you had a defense playing like Juve’s did — bending but not breaking — it simply became harder and harder to see Fiorentina breaking through with every cross that met the forehead of a Juventus player. .............. Allegri put massive faith in his defense once Miretti found the back of the net and the defense delivered. They’ve now recorded five straight shutouts ever since the disaster that was the 4-2 loss to Sassuolo. They’re closing in on 600 minutes of game time without a goal allowed. The manager who wants to build his team on the back of a strong defense is getting exactly that from his team despite his captain and one of most consistent performers the last 2 1⁄2 years being out injured. It wasn’t pretty at times against Fiorentina, but when you defend like Juventus did Sunday night, you’re going to have a chance. Is a super-low block and very defensive mindset the way forward and something that will get Juventus to status of true contenders? I am not totally sure because the last few years have been tough to believe it, but right now it’s working. .............. RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS I am so happy for Fabio Miretti. Just so, so happy. Hopefully seeing that first goal happen can be something that fills him with confidence and he can start a nice run of form. At the very least, we know he’s going to get plenty of chances knowing who is currently not available in midfield. .............. That big pre-game hug between Arthur and Allegri was something I was not expecting. Twenty minutes in and Fiorentina had nearly 70 percent of the possession. But then you look at the scoreboard and ha ha ha ha ha it was a much better situation. .............. Juventus attempted nearly three times fewer the amount of passes as Fiorentina with 105 in the opening half. They completed just 69 of them. I don’t know if that’s actually nice, but it just shows you how little they had of the ball. And when they did have the ball, how clearly unable they were of holding onto it even when they were on the counterattack. .............. Federico Chiesa touched the ball five times in the first half. Chiesa finished with 10 touches during his 66 minutes on the field. If Chiesa receives any sort of criticism for how he played, I’m not here for it. This game was never going to be one in which he was ever going to be anywhere close to involved in — especially after Juve got the early goal. He was 100 percent a victim of Allegri’s tactical decisions Sunday night. .............. Bremer had 13 — let me repeat that: THIRTEEN! — clearances when it was all said and done. Daniele Rugani, who has been low-key great since coming into the starting lineup for the injured Danilo, had 11 clearances and this is the start of the campaign to get him a call-up to the Italian national team next weekend. Come on, Spalletti, you know you want to. RUGANI IN NAZIONALE OR WE RIOT! .............. Take care of business against Cagliari next weekend and Juve will go into the Derby d’Italia in no worse than a comfortable second-place standing. If Matias Soulé and them boys at Frosinone do something wild and get a result against Inter next weekend and maybe Juve’s atop the table. You don’t want to get too far ahead of yourself, but it’s possible ... right? Max Allegri Offers His Assessment of Juventus Win at Fiorentina It’s unfathomable how Juventus endured a siege at the Artemio Franchi to topple Fiorentina 1-0 in Sunday’s mouth-watering Serie A clash. Wojciech Szczesny’s heroics between the sticks and the team’s collective effort helped Bianconeri survive 25 attempts on goal and walk away with a seventh clean sheet in 11 league matches this season. Despite having just 30% of the ball and barely crafting any dangerous move on the Fiorentina half, other than Fabio Miretti’s 10th-minute deadlock-breaker, Juventus scooped up their first league victory in Tuscany in almost five years. Most of the credit goes to their stubborn defense. Juventus completely relinquished their attacking aspirations since going up in the early stages. However, they forged a wall in front of Szczesny’s goal to eke out another classic ‘Massimiliano Allegri’ win. Bianconeri ‘parked the bus’ and successfully managed to frustrate Fiorentina for the rest of the game to make it four league wins on the trot. .............. “Fiorentina are always complicated to play against, as they attack, they move around, but the lads put in a great performance,” the Juventus manager told DAZN. “We scored the goal, suffered more in the first half, in the second Szczesny didn’t have to make a single save, despite all the crosses.“ .............. Juventus Player Ratings vs Fiorentina: Miretti Breaks His Duck Juventus (3-5-2) Wojciech Szczesny – 7 The former Arsenal man made three brilliant saves to earn his sixth clean sheet in a row. His heroics included denying Nico Gonzalez’s low drive and a dipping freekick from Cristiano Biraghi. Federico Gatti – 6 ............. Gleison Bremer – 7.5 A formidable showing from the Brazilian defender who was rock solid at the back. Bullied Lucas Beltran out of the match before having the best of M’Bala Nzola. No opponent stood a chance against him in the air. Daniele Rugani – 7 Another convincing display from the former Empoli man who pulled off a perfectly timed clearance to prevent Nzola from heading home. Weston McKennie – 7 ............. Fabio Miretti – 6.5 The young Juventus midfielder finally broke his duck for the senior team, scoring a close-range opener. He looked lively and dangerous in the final third but still needs to be more composed in possession. Manuel Locatelli – 7 ............. Adrien Rabiot – 7 ............. Filip Kostic – 7 ............. Federico Chiesa – 5.5 It wasn’t a memorable return to Tuscany for the Euro 2020 winner who was rarely involved. Juventus dropping back and sitting deep surely didn’t help his case. Moise Kean – 6 The former Everton man was one of several Juventus players involved in Miretti’s goal. With his team starving for possession, he didn’t have many opportunities to stride forward, but still threatened the opposition with a few decent runs. Substitutes Andrea Cambiaso – 6 A fruitful outing for last weekend’s hero who played as a left-central midfielder. ............. Dusan Vlahovic – 5.5 The Serbian was wasteful with the ball at his feet and couldn’t connect with Milik’s cross. Arkadiusz Milik – 6 ............. Match report – Dogged Juventus hold out for important win It is safe to say that Max Allegri has found a winning formula at Juventus, as his Bianconeri team earned their fourth straight win in their match against Fiorentina tonight. Juve came into the game on the back of five consecutive clean sheets, extending that record to six, along with four wins in a row. Fiorentina had lost back-to-back Serie A games and were eager to return to form in the match, making them solid opponents. Juve got down to business in this game, and Fabio Miretti opened the scoring for them after ten minutes. It seemed like one of those matches where the Bianconeri would score many goals, but Fiorentina had other ideas. ................ Juve’s newfound defensive solidity was on display as they intercepted every ball and blocked every shot from La Viola. Fiorentina had 68% possession and four shots on goal, but Juve stood firm, with La Viola also having ten shots blocked. The second half was more about Juventus’ defensive ability, even though they missed at least one chance to secure the game. ................ Once again, Juve proved to be too tough to break down at the back, and this could be a Scudetto-winning season. Juventus Narrowly Beat Fiorentina – Is Max Allegri Tactical Genius or ‘Football Killer’ Juventus squeaked past Fiorentina 1-0 at the Artemio Franchi to return within a two-point distance of Serie A leaders Inter. After several dreadful campaigns, the Turin heavyweights are back in the Scudetto frame, though football enthusiasts can hardly agree with Massimiliano Allegri’s style. It’s no secret that Allegri cannot care less about the beauty of the game, which often puts him in the crosshairs of Juventus fans. Keeping a clean sheet is more important to him than scoring goals, even though it is the essence of football. But that’s his view, and he is entitled to it. However, if you ask Juventus supporters, they’d probably slam the door shut on Allegri’s exit and make sure he doesn’t come back. For years, Allegri has been accused of ‘shooting football in the head,’ but he has somehow persuaded the board to let him carry on with his controversial football philosophy. ............... Juventus opened the scoring from their only chance in the first half and vanished from the opposition half. And it’s not a figure of speech. Excluding Federico Chiesa’s shot from an offside position, Fabio Miretti’s goal was the visitors’ only attempt in 90 minutes before Andrea Cambiaso’s header in stoppages. Everyone, including Moise Kean and Chiesa, dropped deep back to help Juventus protect their slender lead. So often, Bianconeri had eight or nine players back in their box, trying to fend off Vincenzo Italiano’s men. Fiorentina dominated proceedings from top to bottom, enjoying 68% ball possession and making 25 attempts. ...............
