Motta delivers update on Alberto Costa as Juventus fans wait to see him play Juventus secured the signing of Alberto Costa in the January transfer window, and fans have been eagerly anticipating his debut. The 21-year-old was highly sought after by some of the biggest clubs in world football while playing for Vitória SC, but the Bianconeri ultimately won the race for his signature. ............ Despite the excitement surrounding his arrival, Costa has yet to feature for Juventus. With the team preparing for their upcoming clash against Cagliari, Thiago Motta was asked about the young defender and why he has not been given game time. The manager, however, assured fans that Costa has been performing well in training and will be ready when called upon. ............ Motta praised Costa’s attitude and potential: “Very good since he arrived. Very attentive, he immediately understands what we want to see, he has a great physique, and I am convinced that when his opportunity arrives, he will do very well. He arrived hungry, he wants to demonstrate his value.” ............ . Read more -> https://www.juvefc.com/motta-delivers-update-on-alberto-costa-as-juventus-fans-wait-to-see-him-play/

Cagliari vs. Juventus match preview It’s the game after the disappointing elimination from Europe. A couple of years ago it was being ousted from the Champions League and Europa League. Before that, there were UCL knockout round elimination at the hands of Villareal. Before that, there was the two-legged disappointments against Porto and Lyon. But it’s all ended the same way — and Juve’s European run leaves us wondering how this team will try and get things back on track. ............ So now, here we are again. He we are at the game after the game in which Juventus were eliminated from Europe, this time at the hands of PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League play-off round. Just four days after the loss in the Netherlands, Juve head to Sardinia to face relegation-threatened Cagliari, who are one of the many teams toward the bottom of the Serie A table to have taken points off Thiago Motta’s squad earlier this season. Sunday night’s matchup feels like it has potential scenarios: it’s a sort of soft landing after a brutal Champions League exit or it proves to be the classic post-UCL hangover in which Juve drops points against a team they have no business dropping points against. But Juve enter this trip to Cagliari in quite the delicate frame of mind. Their manager, rightfully, is under serious heat — at least from those outside of Continassa — for what happened earlier in the week in the Netherlands. A squad bereft of big-name leadership is now looking to bounce back against a team it has already dropped points against this season. And, most of all, they have taken another big-time hit to their ship during a season in which nothing has been done easy or really felt all that certain other than the feeling of uncertainty and inconsistency. ............ With Lazio dropping points for the second straight weekend, Juventus can take over fourth place all to themselves with a win over a Cagliari side that was very much sitting just outside the relegation zone until a win over Parma and scoreless draw with Atalanta last weekend. And with the Champions League elimination, finishing in the top four in Serie A — since the dings to the UEFA coefficient over the last week are a huge dent in Italy getting a fifth UCL spot next season — is even more of a focus than it has been all season. There are 13 games to go in this Serie A season. That comes out to 39 points to be had. The way this season has gone for Motta and Co., the likelihood of getting a point total in the mid- or high-30s seems far from a possibility. There’s still big matchups against Atalanta, Fiorentina and Lazio — all direct rivals for a place in the top four — still out there over the next few weeks and months before the season ends in late May. ............ TEAM NEWS The injury news coming out of the loss to PSV Eindhoven: Renato Veiga will miss at least a couple of weeks with what has been described as “an injury to the tendon of the plantar gracilis of his right leg.” Other than the three-long term injury absences, the only other injured player not called up to face Cagliari is Pierre Kalulu. That injury list is one name shorter because Douglas Luiz is back after missing the last couple of weeks due to muscle fatigue. Motta will have more natural fullbacks (3) available to him than center backs (2) against Cagliari. That seems less than ideal. ............ Motta said “there is a chance” Dusan Vlahovic gets a start against Cagliari, even teasing that the big Serbian striker could play alongside Randal Kolo Muani at some point. Vlahovic hasn’t started a game since Jan. 29 against Benfica, with Kolo Muani starting every Serie A game since he signed on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. Even though we have yet to see Alberto Costa play a minute for Juventus, Motta says the young Portuguese fullback “has been doing well in training.” ............ Andrea Cambiaso is the only Juventus player who is one yellow card away from having to serve a one-game suspension. Juventus are unbeaten in their last eight games against Cagliari in all competitions. ............ MATCH INFO When: Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025. Where: Unipol Domus, Cagliari, Italy. Official kickoff time: 8:45 p.m. in Italy and the Central European time zone, 7:45 p.m. in the United Kingdom, 2:45 p.m. Eastern time, 11:45 a.m. Pacific time. ............ . Cagliari vs Juventus: Preview and Prediction Cagliari will be looking for their seventh win of the 2024/25 season when they host fourth-placed Juventus on Sunday. The home team are just five points clear of the drop zone, and they will look to maintain that buffer. Meanwhile, the Old Lady need to keep winning to stay inside the top four. ............ The visitors have slowly climbed up to fourth on the table with 46 points in their 25 outings. While they have only lost once, Juventus have played out 13 draws, which has not helped their cause. Since suffering their only league defeat at the hands of Napoli, the Turin-based outfit have won each of their last three league games. While the Bianconeri are ten points behind the league leaders, they still have an outside chance. But, they are heading into this fixture on the back of a 3-1 thrashing against PSV that knocked them out of the UEFA Champions League. The Hard Tackle takes a close look at both teams and tries to predict the tactics they could deploy. Team News & Tactics Cagliari ............ Probable Lineup (4-5-1): Caprile; Zappa, Mina, Luperto, Augello; Zortea, Adopo, Makoumbou, Marin, Felici; Piccoli Juventus Juventus suffered a massive blow in their UEFA Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven as Chelsea loanee Renato Veiga suffered a tendon injury, which will keep him out for a while. He joins Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal, and Pierre Kalulu on the sidelines. The Old Lady do have a boost ahead of this fixture as Andrea Cambiaso, Teun Koopmeiners, and Douglas Luiz are back in the mix. The visitors will line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, where Michele Di Gregorio will take charge in goal. Nicola Savona and Andrea Cambiaso will be the full-backs, while the highly sought-after Federico Gatti will start alongside Lloyd Kelly at the heart of the defence. In the centre of the park, Teun Koopmeiners will form the double pivot alongside Khephren Thuram. They will look to shield the backline and control the tempo of the game. Weston McKennie could take up the no. 10 role, with Francisco Conceicao and Kenan Yildiz taking charge on the flanks. Randal Kolo Muani should lead the line for Juventus against Cagliari on Sunday. Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Savona, Gatti, Kelly, Cambiaso; Thuram, Koopmeiners; Conceicao, McKennie, Yildiz; Kolo Muani Key Stats After a run of four straight wins to start February, Juventus crumbled against PSV in the UEFA Champions League. The Old Lady will be looking to record consecutive away wins in the league for the first time this season when they take on Cagliari. The last two league meetings between Juventus and Cagliari have ended in a draw. The home team have only won one out of their last 26 league games against Juventus since 2010. Davide Nicola’s team will be eyeing consecutive home wins in the league, something they have not been able to manage since the end of 2023. Player to Watch Kenan Yildiz ........... Prediction Cagliari 1-3 Juventus Cagliari have a very poor head-to-head record against Juventus. While they have managed to hold them onto a draw in their last two meetings, the home team have only won one out of the last 26 meetings. The Old Lady might be heading into this one on the back of a defeat against PSV Eindhoven, but they have been in decent form in Serie A and should not have much difficulty in getting the desired result here. The Hard Tackle predicts a 3-1 win for the away team. . Read more -> https://thehardtackle.com/round-up/2025/02/22/cagliari-vs-juventus-preview-and-prediction-2/

Preview: Cagliari vs. Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups One of three Italian teams dumped out of Europe in midweek, Juventus must get back to Serie A duty on Sunday evening, when their quest for a top-four finish takes them to Cagliari. Juve's defeat in the Champions League playoffs marked a new low for the fallen giants, and they now need more points in pursuit of returning to UEFA's top competition. Match preview Any joy from last week's Derby d'Italia win over Inter Milan was short-lived for Juventus, as the Turin side then slumped out of the Champions League on Wednesday. ............ Motta had seen his team win four games on the spin to start February in fine style, but now they must quickly recover and go again on the domestic front. Sitting fourth in the standings - vying with Lazio, AC Milan, Bologna and Fiorentina for a cherished top-four finish - Juve will try to record consecutive Serie A away wins for the first time this season, before tackling Empoli in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals. Having previously posted five straight wins over Cagliari, the sides have drawn their last two league meetings - though Juventus were 4-0 winners when they most recently convened, in a mid-December cup tie. ............ Team News Juventus received another blow after their early European exit in midweek, as Chelsea loanee Renato Veiga sustained a tendon injury and will be sidelined on Sunday. The visitors' defensive department is already missing Bremer and Juan Cabal - both of whom are out of action for the long term - while Pierre Kalulu is still unavailable and Andrea Cambiaso has just returned from an ankle problem. Along with the latter, misfiring midfielder Teun Koopmeiners was replaced during Juve's loss to PSV, but he should recover from illness in time to make the trip south to Sardinia. Douglas Luiz could also be called up, after recovering from his latest muscular issue. With top scorer Dusan Vlahovic out of favour, the Bianconeri's attack should be led by Randal Kolo Muani, who is the first Juventus player for 13 years to score or assist at least one goal in each of his first four league appearances. ............ Cagliari possible starting lineup: Caprile; Zappa, Mina, Luperto, Augello; Zortea, Adopo, Makoumbou, Marin, Felici; Piccoli Juventus possible starting lineup: Di Gregorio; Savona, Gatti, Kelly, Cambiaso; Thuram, Koopmeiners; Conceicao, McKennie, Yildiz; Kolo Muani We say: Cagliari 0-1 Juventus While Juventus will still be licking their wounds from Wednesday, they can come away from a tough away fixture with maximum points. Cagliari offer little threat up front, so Juve should take the game to their hosts and score at least once. . Juventus youngster set to miss the Cagliari game Nicolo Savona is set to miss Juventus’ Serie A clash against Cagliari this weekend after failing to make the squad due to injury. This comes as an unwelcome setback for the Bianconeri, who must secure a victory after being eliminated from the Champions League by PSV in midweek. ............ The team has benefited from the return of some important players in recent weeks, but fresh concerns have now emerged. Savona will not be available for selection after suffering a muscle problem in his thigh. This is a significant blow, as the defender has proven himself to be a reliable option in recent matches, even when deployed at left-back, a position that is not his natural role. His absence means Juventus will have to make adjustments in defence, but they possess the squad depth necessary to cope with such setbacks. Despite the loss of Savona, the expectation remains that they will deliver a professional performance and take all three points from this fixture. ............ For Juventus, this match is not just about maintaining their strong position in the league but also about responding positively to their Champions League disappointment. Failing to win would only add to the frustrations of their recent European exit, making this fixture all the more important. ............ . Thiago Motta ‘self-critical’ but Juventus ‘on the right path’ Juventus coach Thiago Motta insists he’s ‘self-critical’, but the Bianconeri are ‘on the right path’ despite Champions League elimination against PSV. Juventus return to the pitch on Sunday in an away game against strugglers Cagliari. ............ “After such a disappointment, the best thing to do is to get back on the pitch,” Motta said at a pre-match press conference on Saturday. “We have a very tough match ahead; we know our opponent, the difficulty of the environment, and that we must put in a great performance.” ............ “The communication remains the same. I’m self-critical every day. Every decision is made to get the best possible result at the moment,” insisted the coach. ............ Motta was asked whether he had thought about his decisions in the game against PSV. “I always do it. I don’t need a defeat to reflect on things,” he said. “Every decision is made to get the best result at the moment. I respect different opinions, but I move forward in a straight line. I believe we are on the right path.” ............ “The players understand everything, and we give the maximum effort. “The players are smart and capable; they know what we want. Sometimes, even without a huge difference, the opponent was superior. We talk with the players daily, and our next goal is to prepare well in today’s training session for tomorrow’s match.” . Opinion – Juventus problems could be more psychological than physical Juventus lost their four-game winning streak after PSV beat them 3-1 in the Champions League playoff. The Bianconeri seemed to have finally hit some top form, with four consecutive wins making the fans dream of a team that can win some trophies this term. However, the men in black and white have since disappointed, bringing back the bad and worrying feeling to the club. They are rebuilding, and at the rebuilding stage of any team, mistakes would be made, and the learning curve could be steep. ............ Juve has the players to play any game plan, and there is no need for their stars to have an inferiority complex of any kind. This is because they play for the biggest Italian football club, and most earn far more than their peers at other clubs. Because the team’s average age is as low as 25, the Bianconeri do not have a problem with physical strength. ............ However, where Juve needs to grow is the psychological aspect of their game, as they have simply not been good enough. Players need their minds as much as their bodies to play and win games, and the current Juve squad struggles with its identity. At the moment, they simply do not have the mindset of a team that can beat anyone, which is a surprise because they ought to have that. ............ Motta’s team looks ordinary in most of their matches, and many of their victories have lacked the conviction to show that they have what it takes to win some trophies for the club. These players have to improve their mindsets and awaken to the fact that they are in one of the biggest football clubs in the world. . Is Juventus too big a club to be undergoing a “project”? In recent weeks and months, pundits and commentators have been giving their opinions on the tenure of Thiago Motta at Juventus with some saying that the former Bologna manager needs to be given time, in better words, fans and the hierarchy at Juve need to be patient and allow the Motta project to evolve. That is a problem for me and I ask myself, what other elite clubs hire a new manager and give him time to develop his strategies and vision? ............ Based on the criterion that Juventus are one of the elite five European clubs I then wonder whether Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and even Man Utd would show patience with a new manager. Man Utd have done so to a certain extent but look at the state of them. When your standards are so high that only glory will suffice, then there is no time for patience, no time to allow a project to grow and managers get sacked if they fail to deliver. Could Motta survive at Real Madrid or Bayern Munich? I would say no, absolutely not, they simply believe they are too big to have off seasons, even when managers win a trophy at those clubs they can still get the sack because they did not win a big enough trophy. ............ . Alessandro Costacurta calls for more time for Thiago Motta to build a strong team Alessandro Costacurta insists that Thiago Motta needs more time to build the Juventus team that the fans all want to see. The Bianconeri are gradually getting used to the demands of their new manager after the club appointed Motta as its latest gaffer in the summer. Since his arrival, the former midfielder has been supported with some fine players over the last two transfer windows, and Juventus fans are now looking for results. They believe the club has backed the manager sufficiently, and they now expect him to produce the desired outcomes. ............ Costacurta said: “Of course. I see flashes of good football. His is becoming a real team. A good market helps him, apart from a couple of mistakes. To win, yesterday as today, you need strong players. Boniperti’s motto worked above all thanks to the technical level of the teams. The same goes for Berlusconi’s ‘we must be the strongest in the world’.” While the fans may be frustrated by a lack of major silverware this season, Costacurta’s comments emphasise the importance of patience. ............ The club’s fans will be eager to see the rewards of their spending, but as Costacurta points out, lasting success cannot be rushed, and Motta must be given the time he needs to build the team into one capable of competing for major trophies. . Barillá suggests Motta has to learn to make better post match comments Antonio Barillà has expressed his dissatisfaction with Thiago Motta’s comments following Juventus’ elimination from the Champions League at the hands of PSV. Motta has often faced criticism for his post-match remarks, with many of them sparking debate among fans and the media. His words frequently provoke reactions, and at times, they are misinterpreted to suggest something he may not have intended. ............ Barillà voiced his concerns about Motta’s attitude following the loss: “Regardless of the defeat, the thing that most disappointed me after the match against PSV were Motta’s statements. You can’t summarise everything with a simple ‘let’s start again from Cagliari’. A sporting objective was missed and a lot of money was lost, so it would have been appropriate to do a more in-depth reflection, for example with respect to one’s own ideas, the assumption of responsibilities. In short, to do self-criticism. I wonder how thin the line is between low character profile and presumption.” Barillà’s frustration stems from the belief that Motta’s approach lacks the necessary introspection after such a significant setback. ............ The club’s Champions League exit represents not just a sporting failure but also a financial blow, making it all the more important to assess what went wrong. ............ . Juventus and Kenan Yildiz could part ways at the end of the season Kenan Yildiz has quickly emerged as one of Juventus’ brightest prospects, and the club is looking to build its future around the Turkish youngster. The attacker has impressed since making his way into the first team, delivering some fine performances that have drawn attention from both fans and pundits alike. Yildiz is seen as a potential star who can help Juve return to their former glory, and the Bianconeri are confident that he will develop into a key player for the club. However, despite the high hopes surrounding him, manager Thiago Motta has started Yildiz on the bench in recent matches. ............ This situation has caused frustration among Yildiz’s entourage, and there are growing concerns about the attacker’s future at Juventus. While Yildiz is considered one of the few players at the club who is deemed “least transferable,” there is a possibility that he could leave at the end of the season. The report suggests that, if a substantial offer comes in for the young player, Juventus may be tempted to sell him, especially if his performances do not improve. ............ . Is Douglas Luiz fit enough to play for Juventus against Cagliari? Douglas Luiz has been sidelined for Juventus’ last two games due to injury, and the Brazilian midfielder is working hard to recover and return to action as soon as possible. Despite Juventus having a squad full of talented players who are fit and ready to play, Luiz’s absence has been felt. He had just begun to settle into the team and show his quality before injury struck, and his potential remains a key asset for the club. ............ While Juventus has been content with the overall performance of the team, their recent exit from the Champions League at the hands of PSV has left a sense of urgency around their next match against Cagliari. The fans are eager for a return to winning ways, but it seems unlikely that Juventus will rush Luiz back into the starting XI for this crucial game, given the uncertainty surrounding his fitness. ............ Luiz’s fitness remains a concern, with the midfielder training away from the rest of the squad in the latest session. This suggests that his recovery is still in progress, and it may take some time before he is ready to play again. Juventus must be careful not to rush Luiz back too quickly, as pushing him into action before he is fully healed could risk aggravating his injury and leading to a longer spell on the sidelines. ............ . Mauro says Motta needs to find some stability in his selection Thiago Motta has made it difficult for anyone to predict his lineup at Juventus, as the Bianconeri manager enjoys altering his team selection for almost every match. No player in the current Juventus squad can afford to feel too comfortable in their role or assume they will be given the opportunity to play regularly. Motta’s decisions keep everyone on their toes, ensuring competition remains high within the squad. The manager picks his team based on how players have performed in the training sessions leading up to a match. This approach means that several players miss out on consistent playing time, making it difficult for anyone to establish themselves as a guaranteed starter. While some may see this as a fair way to ensure only the most deserving players make the team, others argue that it creates uncertainty within the squad. ............ The Juventus squad has now become accustomed to Motta’s approach, but Massimo Mauro believes there needs to be greater clarity regarding team roles. Mauro expressed his concerns about the lack of consistency in the manager’s selections: “The coach works with what he has, but he could do better. At the start of the season, Dušan Vlahović was untouchable, but now no one has a permanent position: there are too many doubts about the squad. “Douglas Luiz and Teun Koopmeiners were supposed to drag the team along, but so far, it hasn’t happened. For me, Douglas is a flop, while I would always play Koop.” ............ While squad rotation can be beneficial in keeping players fresh and maintaining competition, it is also important for players to understand their roles and responsibilities within the team. ............ . Nino Ori says Motta does not take responsibility for his mistakes Thiago Motta has been on the Juventus managerial bench for less than a year, but the pressure is already mounting on the former midfielder. Managing the Bianconeri comes with immense expectations, given that Juventus is the most successful club in Italian football. When Motta accepted the job, he was fully aware of the demands that came with it and the significant amount of work required to bring success back to Turin. Despite the challenges, Motta remains confident in his approach. He believes his tactical ideas will eventually take shape and lead Juventus to silverware. However, patience has never been a luxury afforded to managers at the Allianz Stadium. ............ Football analyst Nino Ori has now weighed in on Motta’s tenure so far, assessing his first few months in charge. Speaking about the Juventus manager’s approach, he expressed concerns over Motta’s unwillingness to acknowledge mistakes: “Today I have worse feelings than yesterday, especially after hearing that Motta would do everything he has done up to now again. When someone thinks they have invented football, they think they are a phenomenon, but they may not understand what mistakes they have made, they do not take responsibility for them and do not even try to fix them. Everyone was excited after the four consecutive victories, but the reality tells a different story.” ............ . What Chelsea thinks about selling Renato Veiga to Juventus permanently Juventus has been very impressed with the performances of Renato Veiga and is already eager to ensure he does not leave the club. The Bianconeri secured him on loan from Chelsea during the last transfer window, and despite the difficulties in completing the deal, he is proving to be an excellent addition to the squad. ............ Since arriving, Veiga has displayed his quality and versatility, making him a valuable player for Juventus. His performances have provided stability at the back, and his confidence on the ball has been impressive. It is clear why the club sees him as someone they want to keep beyond this season, but it will not be a straightforward process. ............ Chelsea remains unwilling to let the Portuguese youngster leave permanently at the end of the season, which means he could be forced to return to London to continue his career. This would be a significant setback for Juventus, as Veiga has become an important member of the squad, and losing him would create a gap that might be difficult to fill. ............ . Juventus is watching Atalanta star after he publicly slammed his manager A civil war appears to be brewing at Atalanta, and Juventus could be the ultimate beneficiary of the situation when the season concludes. Ademola Lookman found himself at the centre of controversy after missing a penalty he was not supposed to take during Atalanta’s match against Club Brugge. His decision to step up for the spot-kick led to severe criticism from his manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, who did not hold back in his assessment of the Nigerian forward. Gasperini publicly slammed Lookman, calling him the worst penalty-taker he had ever known, a statement that immediately sparked debate among fans and pundits. The criticism did not sit well with Lookman, who felt disrespected by his manager’s remarks. ............ His growing frustration, coupled with interest from top clubs, could see him leave Atalanta at the end of the season. Juventus are keeping a close eye on developments surrounding Lookman’s future. The report claims that Juventus director Cristiano Giuntoli is actively monitoring the situation, ensuring the Bianconeri are in a strong position to make a move should the opportunity arise. ............ . Capello identifies ‘main’ Juventus problem in loss against PSV Former Juventus coach noted that the Bianconeri’s ‘main’ issue against PSV was in midfield, although Thiago Motta’s men struggled to keep up with the ‘opponents’ intensity.’ ............ “We have seen proof that our Serie A struggles with the high pace of European football,” Capello said. ............ “Above all, the difficulty in keeping up with the opponents’ intensity was evident,” continued Capello. “PSV practically never passed the ball back to the goalkeeper, never played backwards, but always moved forward, even when they were winning. Our teams are not used to this kind of pressure. “I liked the Bianconeri in the first 45 minutes; they pressed a lot, keeping PSV far from Di Gregorio’s goal. But fatigue started to show at the beginning of the second half,” continued the ex-Bianconeri boss. “Juve had spent a lot of energy, and just ten minutes after the break, they already seemed to be running on empty. Perhaps Thiago Motta could have acted sooner with the substitutions. He spent almost 10 minutes discussing with his assistant before making changes.” ............ “Juve’s main issues were in midfield when the team was no longer able to press, allowing the Dutch side more space,” he noted. “That’s why Motta should have made changes earlier, perhaps bringing in Thuram to freshen up the midfield.” ............ . Del Piero reveals two factors that caused ‘huge gap’ between Juventus & PSV Juventus icon Alessandro Del Piero saw a comprehensive difference between his beloved club and PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night. ............ Del Piero did indeed notice a sizable gap in terms of desire as well as intensity. He believes the Bianconeri only decided to go for the goal when it was already too late. “There is a huge gap and it was clearly visible tonight,” said the legendary Juventus Number 10 in his post-match appearance. “The difference lies in the desire and intensity with which the two teams looked for the goal. PSV created many dangerous chances, while Juventus only came out in the second half of extra time, when the Dutch decided to defend themselves.” ............ “Among the three teams that exited the Champions League, Milan is the one with the most extenuating circumstances.” ............ . Di Canio hits out at ‘confused’ Thiago Motta: “PSV gave Juventus a lesson” Former Juventus, West Ham and Lazio striker Paolo Di Canio criticised Thiago Motta for his reluctant approach against PSV Eindhoven. ............ After the contest, Motta admitted PSV was the better side on the night, but disagreed with Manuel Locatelli who suggested their opponents wanted it more. For his part, Di Canio wasn’t impressed with the 42-year-old’s game management. The Juventus coach was preparing a couple of substitutions (Mbangula and Thuram) but changed his mind when Timothy Weah gave the Old Lady the lead on aggregate. But afterwards, PSV managed to score once more. ............ “PSV gave Juventus a football lesson. The Dutch dominated and deserved to advance to the next round,” said Di Canio during his post-match appearance. “Thiago Motta was confused. He was making some substitutions and then changed his mind after scoring a goal that made it 1-1. Tonight, PSV could have scored five or six goals against Juventus.” ............ . Thiago Motta could face Juventus sack at the end of the season Thiago Motta is no longer protected by high walls, as the rest of the Juventus campaign will determine his fate. Despite the club’s underwhelming season, the Bianconeri’s management continued to publicly and privately support the 42-year-old. As the club’s directors reiterated, the Italian Brazilian tactician was chosen to lead a long-term project, so a few stumbles along the way in the first campaign had already been envisioned. Nevertheless, the early Champions League elimination has been hard to swallow even for Motta’s staunchest defenders at Continassa. ............ While a mid-season sacking could be easily ruled out (as he’s unlikely to pull off a Max Allegri outburst), the management will decide the tactician’s fate at the end of the season, and the outcome will largely hinge on Champions League qualification. Juve’s early exit from Europe will cost the club a sizable amount of cash, but missing out on the tournament altogether would be a killer blow for the Bianconeri from a financial standpoint, as they’re already struggling to balance their accounts. Therefore, Juventus won’t tolerate a failure on this front. Juventus confirm Renato Veiga suffered muscle injury – Expected recovery time revealed Juventus defender Renato Veiga will be out of action after sustaining a lesion in his thigh as confirmed by the club. The 21-year-old has been a great addition to the backline, filling in for Gleison Bremer who’s out for the season, as well as Pierre Kalulu who’s expected to remain on the sidelines for the rest of the month. ............ But sadly for Veiga, his momentum has been halted by a muscle injury he suffered during Wednesday’s Champions League contest against PSV Eindhoven. He had to leave the pitch in the early going which certainly didn’t help Thiago Motta’s case. The Old Lady ended up crashing out of the competition with a 3-4 defeat on aggregate after extra-time. ............ “Renato Veiga, who was substituted during the first half of Wednesday’s match against PSV Eindhoven, underwent diagnostic tests at J|Medical this afternoon,” reads the official statement posted on the club’s website. “The examinations revealed an injury to the tendon of the plantar gracilis of his right leg. The player’s recovery time will be evaluated according to his symptoms.” As usual, the club’s note didn’t include a timetable for the recovery, but we don’t expect him to return before at least one month on the sidelines. ............ . Five avoidable mistakes Thiago Motta committed against PSV While fans and pundits might disagree on the amount of responsibility that falls on the manager’s shoulders, at least most would agree Thiago Motta could have done better when it comes to managing the second leg against PSV Eindhoven. ............ Journalist Fabio Russo identifies five tactical blunders Motta commited during the contest. First of all, the source notes how PSV are excellent at going forward, but can be shaky at the back. Therefore, Juventus would have probably found success had they been more adventurous, but instead decided to sit back and invite their opponents into their own area. ............ Russo also wondered why Motta didn’t start with Yildiz who should have been fresh after only featuring for a cameo against Inter on Sunday. He also decided to drop Khephren Thuram in favour of Teun Koopmeiners who had a fever by his own admission. ............ On another note, the journalist blames the Juventus technical staff for the players’ athletic condition, as they failed to keep up with PSV’s pace in the second half. Moreover, Russo suggests Veiga’s playing time could have been managed better, as his constant appearances may have played a role in his injury. Finally, the columnist notes the Bianconeri remain psychologically feeble as they once again squandered the lead, so he believes Motta has so far failed to insert mental toughness within the team. .
