Inter Milan stun Juventus with

comeback win in Derby d'Italia

Mauro Icardi inspired a superb comeback win for Inter as Juventus saw their perfect start to the new Serie A campaign shattered at the San Siro on Sunday.

Stephan Lichtsteiner had given the champions a 66th-minute lead but Icardi drew Inter level almost immediately then set up the winner for Ivan Perisic 10 minutes later.

It was a stunning response from Inter after their midweek Europa League defeat to Hapoel Be'er Sheva, and was barely spoiled by a last-minute red card for Ever Banega.

Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri sprung a surprise by dropping star striker Gonzalo Higuain to the bench as he sought to restore momentum after a frustrating goalless draw at home to Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Higuain's replacement Mario Mandzukic looked lively in the opening exchanges but both sides struggled to assert any kind of authority and it took 20 minutes for the game to catch alight.

In end-to-end action, Juventus striker Paulo Dybala saw a strong effort blocked in the box by Joao Miranda before a dangerous Eder cross was headed clear by Leonardo Bonucci at the other end.

The increasingly dangerous Eder fired just wide for Inter moments later, but Juve should have taken the lead on 35 minutes when Alex Sandro crossed for Sami Khedira who headed wide of target from 12 yards.

Another immediate counter-attack by Inter saw Icardi out-muscle Giorgio Chiellini only to see his eventual shot creep just wide of Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon's far post.

Miralem Pjanic shot just wide as the visitors began to look the most likely to break the deadlock, and the dangerous Mandzukic was well shacked by Miranda in the Inter box as he shaped to shoot.

If Inter will have been pleased to reach the interval on level terms after their recent struggles, they clearly began to believe the points were there for the taking in the second period with Eder in particular finding space to press forward.

The Brazilian sent a heavily deflected effort just wide past the beaten Buffon, then Icardi set up Antonio Candreva for a stunning volley that drifted agonisingly across the face of goal for the hosts.

Against the run of play, Juve snatched the opener in the 66th minute when Sandro sent in a brilliant low cross for full-back Lichtsteiner to tap in from close range.

But Inter launched a superb response and were level inside two minutes, the impressive Icardi rising high to power home from a corner and immediately restore parity.

Higuain arrived for the final 15 minutes but it was Inter who had the momentum and they grabbed their second in the 77th minute when Icardi rounded Buffon and crossed for Perisic to nod home.

Higuain almost headed an equaliser with one of his first touches of the game then Pjanic sent a long-range free-kick inches over the bar as Juventus frantically sought to draw level.

And Inter's nerves were not helped when Banega was sent off on the stroke of full-time for pulling back Sandro, forcing the hosts to cling on for what would be a famous victory with 10 men.

De Boer: 'Inter played as a team'

Sep 18, 2016

Frank de Boer saw “Inter started to play as a team and we deserved the victory” in the Derby d’Italia against Juventus.

Stephan Lichtsteiner had opened the scoring before Mauro Icardi nodded in and then set up the winner for Ivan Perisic.

“Juventus of course are a team who give you extra motivation, but we discussed things in the locker room, that we had to play as a team from the first to the 90thminute,” De Boer told Sky Sport Italia.

“That’s something we didn’t do on Thursday (in a 2-0 defeat to Hapoel Beer-Sheva), but we did tonight and that is why we deserved the victory.

“I am happy with what everyone is doing right now, we fought the whole game and clearly we can improve, but we have now started to play as a team and with that the added quality can then make the difference.

“We talked a lot about this, as we already went behind and lost our heads three or four times, for example against Chievo and Pescara. It’s even worse if you are against Juve.

“However, this time we remained concentrated and did not stray from our approach, so that really paid off. This is what I want to see from my team.”

Perisic was originally expected to be out injured, but he came on in the final stages and scored the winning goal.

“He didn’t train for a few days, but I knew he could contribute coming off the bench and he did. I have many players to choose from.”

After this victory, Inter’s second Serie A success in a row, can they become Scudetto contenders?

“It’s always nice after victories like this against the best side in Italy to think of such matters, but the most important thing is to prepare for Empoli. It’s a very long journey, I am happy with tonight’s performance and we have to show it every week that we can play as a team, otherwise Empoli or other sides will get the better of us.

“This win is a great moment for the fans, the club and the team, as victory over Juve will start to build confidence,” continued De Boer.

“We studied Juventus and realised (Leonardo) Bonucci is very good at starting moves from the back, so (Gary) Medel above all tried to close him down, press the ball and (Antonio) Candreva did it too on (Giorgio) Chiellini.

“It was a fine performance from the whole team and that’s how it works, the whole side has to move in a homogenous and compact way, but we need to do it every week.”

Allegri: 'Defeat must burn Juve'

2gxoitz.jpg

http://www.football-italia.net/91669/allegri-defeat-must-burn-juve

Sep 18, 2016

Max Allegri admits Inter deserved their victory in the Derby d’Italia and “hopefully Juventus can learn from it, because this defeat has to burn.”

Stephan Lichtsteiner had opened the scoring before Mauro Icardi nodded in and then set up the winner for Ivan Perisic at 2-1.

“After taking the lead, we didn’t even hold it for two minutes,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

“We got sluggish and complacent, dropping the intensity levels. This defeat has to burn within us and teach us a real lesson, getting our feet back on the ground.

“It was a ‘dirty’ game, rough and a real battle. We needed more determination and hunger to bring home the result, especially once we had gone in front.”

Miralem Pjanic struggled to make his mark in the deep-lying playmaker role, which had previously been taken by Mario Lemina.

“I think Pjanic had an intelligent game in front of the defence. Lemina did well for a few games, but don’t forget he only played nine times last season, so we can’t put too much pressure on him.

“The real problem today is that Juventus were bad on a technical level – we gave the ball away cheaply, misplaced passes and above all conceded our third goal of the season on a corner.

“It’s not easy for strikers when the whole team is playing badly. We need to relax, start preparing for the Cagliari game and put together a run of good results.

“It’s not a tragedy. I was worried we’d have such a strong series of early fixtures, but the lads largely did well. I think every now and then a defeat like this can do us good, if we are smart and humble enough to learn from it.”

Buffon: 'It's not like Juve'

16j23jk.jpg

Sep 18, 2016

Gigi Buffon slammed Juventus for fumbling their lead in a 2-1 defeat away to Inter. “A side like ours cannot lose that game.”

Stephan Lichtsteiner had put the Bianconeri ahead against the run of play, but Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic turned it around.

“It hurts, because for 65 minutes we played badly and weren’t very sharp in our passing, but we still went in front,” Buffon told Sky Sport Italia.

“A side like ours cannot and must not lose from that situation. A draw can happen, but not a defeat. You take these results home with something other than tactics and fluidity. You need determination and grit.

“I think this defeat will do us good and it’s perhaps normal not to be at 1,000 per cent hunger this early in the season. We were put under pressure on the pitch and need to improve things. This is the third goal of the season we’ve let in from a corner and that’s really not like us.

“Aside from what the media says about our strength, which could well be true, we have to prove it on the pitch in every single game.

“After we beat Sassuolo 3-1 there was praise all round, but to be honest I had my doubts about that performance. We allowed Sassuolo four scoring opportunities and a side that is based on solidity can’t be doing that.

“Against Sevilla we were criticised, yet I liked Juve for their solidity and ability to create chances. Today, aside from the beauty of our football, we could’ve won just through sheer solidity.

“I think one of Juve’s strengths has always been our ability to concede one goal every two games, on average. If we score two per game, we generally win.

“However, we’ve conceded four in four Serie A rounds and that’s not right for Juve.”

Allegri hopes Inter defeat 'burns' Juve players

The Bianconeri coach was disappointed as their winning run evaporated in Milan,

and he is looking for an instant response as he defended Higuain's benching.

Massimiliano Allegri called his Juventus side "sluggish and complacent" after they let a one-goal lead slip in a 2-1 defeat to Inter at San Siro.

The Bianconeri looked set to make it four wins from four Serie A matches when Stephan Lichtsteiner opened the scoring after 66 minutes, but the lead was quickly overturned by a determined Inter side.

Goals from Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic condemned Juventus to their first Serie A defeat to Inter since November 2012, and Allegri said he hoped his players would learn from the shock result.

"After taking the lead, we didn't even hold it for two minutes," Allegri told Sky Sport Italy.

"We got sluggish and complacent, dropping the intensity levels. This defeat has to burn within us and teach us a real lesson, getting our feet back on the ground.

"It was a dirty game, rough and a real battle. We needed more determination and hunger to bring home the result, especially once we had gone in front.”

Allegri opted to leave Juventus' record signing Gonzalo Higuain out of his starting line-up, favouring Mario Mandzukic, and also played Miralem Pjanic as a deep-lying playmaker, in place of Mario Lemina.

Neither change seemed to have a positive impact but Allegri defended the decisions, saying: "I think Pjanic had an intelligent game in front of the defence.

"Lemina did well for a few games, but don't forget he only played nine times last season, so we can't put too much pressure on him.

"The real problem today is that Juventus were bad on a technical level – we gave the ball away cheaply, misplaced passes and above all conceded our third goal of the season on a corner.

"It's not easy for strikers when the whole team is playing badly. We need to relax, start preparing for the Cagliari game and put together a run of good results.

He added: "It's not a tragedy. I was worried we'd have such a strong series of early fixtures, but the lads largely did well.

"I think every now and then a defeat like this can do us good, if we are smart and humble enough to learn from it."

Juventus lacking ideas and

tactically poor in loss to Inter Milan

Sep 18, 2016

Slow to react, cumbersome in their movements, Juventus were rightly defeated 2-1 by a more determined and fluid Inter Milan side that fought for the win.

Bereft of ideas and so often caught in possession, the Bianconeri struggled to keep the ball and looked overwhelmed in midfield, failing to create or play with their usual intensity. With no pace in the side and no quality in attack, Massimiliano Allegri needed to make changes quickly but as usual waited until the 70th minute rendering his side offensively impotent for the vast majority of the game.

Positives

The one thing of note is that despite the team's dire performance, they did manage to open the scoring largely thanks to Alex Sandro who never stops running and producing for the side. While the wing-back is always capable of a mistake or two, he can always be counted upon to believe in the win until the end.

Negatives

Another goal conceded from the corner, Juventus struggled in defence. However, the lack of quality in midfield proved to be the real problem forcing Paulo Dybala to drop back so deep, he failed to make the difference in front of goal.

With Miralem Pjanic not on his game and Kwadwo Asamoah lacking the skill required at this level, Juve struggled in both keeping possession and in creating sophisticated patterns of play to overcome Inter's solid defending.

Manager rating out of 10

5 -- "There are three or four games in a season that you feel can be decisive at the end of the day and this, against a strong Inter side, is one of them," noted Allegri in his post-match news conference. If that was so, then why was Gonzalo Higuain on the bench? Why was Kwadwo Asamoah included and why did it take so long to make the substitutions and correct the mistakes made initially?

The midfield clearly lacked the technique to hold possession and create. Claudio Marchisio's absence was keenly felt but why was Marko Pjaca, a central midfielder once upon a time, not played from the start or introduced earlier as a substitute? The time to make an impact is now, Juventus must start on the front foot to build momentum and that includes winning these games.

Player ratings (1-10; 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating):

GK Gianluigi Buffon, 6 -- Couldn't avoid conceding the goals -- no heroic performance today.

DF Mehdi Benatia, 6 -- Had to come off early with an injury but played with confidence while he was on.

DF Leonardo Bonucci, 6 -- Dealt with Mauro Icardi rather well and demonstrated the beauty of his passing game.

DF Giorgio Chiellini, 6 -- Made several mistakes to put Juventus in a dangerous position yet always plays with tenacity and intensity to block the opponent as well as he can.

DF Stephan Lichtsteiner, 6 -- Accused of causing problems due to his desire to join Inter over the summer, it was Lichtsteiner's clever running that led him to scoring the opening goal. However, he struggled to really push forward and demonstrate his tactical intelligence.

DF Alex Sandro, 6 -- It was thanks to his accurate crossing that Juventus opened the scoring. Relentless in his desire to maraud up and down the left lane, he was one of the few who really tried to play. Always produces a mistake though.

MF Sami Khedira, 6 -- Quickly becoming the man who wastes chances, there is no point in timing his runs to perfection if he cannot convert his opportunities. Khedira has to produce better finishes. Off the pace in midfield today too.

MF Miralem Pjanic, 6 -- Rather unnoticeable. Produced a good free kick but failed to provide true inspiration from midfield or help the side initiate anything worthwhile. The game almost passed him by in a blur.

MF Kwadwo Asamoah, 5 -- While the player always plays with heart, he is not suited to play against the better sides, especially not in central midfield. Lacks technique, caught in possession too often, he struggles to maintain composure and play with intelligence. Error prone.

FW Paulo Dybala, 6 -- The Argentine has yet to play like himself this season. Occasionally he drops so deep that he's unable to provide the quality Juventus need in the final third. Lacked control in certain situations and played with frustration rather than drive the team forward.

FW Mario Mandzukic, 5 -- He needed to make an impression on this game to secure more game time but instead the Croatian lacked rhythm, ideas and the tenacity required to overcome the defenders and do something.

Substitutes:

DF Andrea Barzagli, 6 -- Received a yellow card immediately after being introduced. A little tetchy and not as composed as usual.

FW Gonzalo Higuain, N/A -- Certainly more dangerous than Mandzukic and nearly produced a goal. Should have started the match.

FW Marko Pjaca, N/A -- Immediately tried to integrate himself in the game. Should have been afforded more minutes.

Mauro Icardi lifts Inter to comeback win

Sep 18, 2016

Normally, a clinical Juventus opener 24 minutes from time is a death sentence, it's as simple as that. As Stephan Lichsteiner -- ironically a late transfer target for the Nerazzurri -- wheeled away in triumph, it looked like Frank de Boer's men had toiled for nothing.

But nothing could have been further from the truth. Within two minutes of Juventus' opener, Mauro Icardi had pressed the reset button with a powerful header from a corner.

Suddenly, a deeply shaken San Siro came alive again, the fans willing their idols to press on the advantage they had gained in a hard-fought first half. They wouldn't have to wait long; 10 minutes later, Icardi converted a fluffed chance into a perfect cross for Ivan Perisic's winner. Cue bedlam, as a jumping San Siro celebrated its first league win against its bitter rival since 2012.

Positives

Everything except the full-backs. Joao Miranda and Jeison Murillo looked composed, the midfield tough and creative and the attackers dangerous and clinical. De Boer got his tactics spot on and it was a beautiful sight to behold, a stark contrast to the outcome many Inter fans had pictured in their minds.

Negatives

Juventus' opener was the result of some sloppy defending, perfectly underlining how the full-back position is still a big problem for this team. Sami Khedira also had an early chance, which Miranda will need to work on. Beyond that, the Nerazzurri were sensational.

Manager rating out of 10

7 -- If a coach can make his players look comfortable in his system, he's completed half of the battle. De Boer did just that against Juve. Inter finally showed some signs of compactness and unity, with the midfield able to both shield the defence and launch dangerous counterattacks. The Dutchman cleverly benched Perisic, only to use him as an impact sub to great effect.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Samir Handanovic, 7 -- When the defence fell asleep on Juventus' final attack, it was Handanovic who leaped off his line to punch the ball away from Khedira. Decisive.

DF Danilo D'Ambrosio, 5 -- Was Juventus' goal partially his fault? Of course it was. Miscued a clearance after Inter's equaliser. Did his part in attack without looking too dangerous.

DF Joao Miranda, 7 -- Gave the back line a sense of security, impressive considering he struggled physically early on. Monumental, except for when nobody responded to Juventus' last, desperate attack, forcing Handanovic to complete a last ditch clearance.

DF Jeison Murillo, 7 -- Generally kept Mario Mandzukic very, very quiet. Unfairly criticized after the Pescara win for looking to anticipate opposition strikers, something he managed to do well on Sunday. Then again, he struggled against Paulo Dybala's speed and should have had a penalty awarded against him for manhandling Mandzukic.

DF Davide Santon, 5 -- Lost Lichtsteiner for Juventus' opener, but did offer Ever Banega an outlet for his passing down the wings. That said, Mario Balotelli's former dancing partner often looked uncertain on the ball.

MF Joao Mario, 7 -- Following a difficult first half, he brought out all of his repertoire of crisp passes and neat long balls in the final third in the second 45 minutes. His stats from last week's Pescara win showed that the former Sporting CP man's distribution was better than it seemed and this performance saw him pass the eye test, too.

MF Gary Medel, 7 -- Looked far more elegant than expected. There's a reason Miralem Pjanic didn't get up to much in this game; the Chilean's clever read of the game often killed the Bianconeri's attacks before they could even move the ball away from the middle.

MF Ever Banega, 8 -- Inspirational. Inter can't live without the Argentine's craft in midfield. Whether he was finding Antonio Candreva on the wing or taking the pressure off by spotting an unmarked teammate, the former Boca man is doing the same job he was doing at Sevilla. Even his sending off could be construed as a positive, as he kiboshed what could have been a dangerous Alex Sandro run.

FW Antonio Candreva, 7 -- Industrious and determined, Candreva was able to convert possession into attack on many occasions by taking on his opponent or elegantly finding space down the right. Has actually been one of the sharpest Inter players in the final third so far.

FW Mauro Icardi, 9 -- Picking up from where he left off last week, the Argentine was a strong presence, wrestling a defender off before skimming the post in the first half. Got better as the game progressed and was often the target for chipped passes to the edge of the area. Stopped the rot from Juventus' opener with his seventh goal against the Old Lady in eight games. His outside-of-the-foot assist to Perisic was exceptional, too.

FW Eder, 7 -- De Boer got this call right, too: starting the Azzurro resulted in Inter having an attacking outlet at all times, something Perisic hasn't provided when included on the team sheet. Always trying to maintain possession and create good openings, Eder was among the most lively Nerazzurri in the first half.

Substitutes

FW Ivan Perisic, 7 -- As long as the Croatian can score a goal and be a constant threat, he can come on as a super-sub any day! There were echoes of last year's Coppa Italia comeback as he gave Lichtsteiner the runaround on numerous occasions, looking oh-so-dynamic when he cut inside the Swiss international. His winning header was beautifully taken, too.

MF Felipe Melo, 7 -- Gets his mark purely on the basis of his umbrella celebration. Otherwise committed a dangerous foul outside the box when Inter were nursing their lead.

DF Senna Miangue, N/R -- Was able to win the ball back and shield it from an opponent, a sign that Inter's players are finding themselves in better positions, but otherwise didn't do much.

Frank De Boer was feeling the heat after an abject performance in the Europa League, but Massimiliano Allegri had failed to dazzle his critics with a disappointing result against Sevilla FC in the Champions League. Nevertheless, there was no time to cry over past failures: it was time for one of the biggest games in Italy!

Likewise, there was no time to get comfortable and eased into things as we almost witnessed a goal straight away. Paolo Dybala intelligently dragged Jeison Murillo out of position by dropping deep, thus opening up space for Sami Khedira to run into all the way from the halfway line. Kwadwo Asamoah chipped the ball over the top for the German to run onto, but he took a heavy touch on his knee which enabled Samir Handanovic to deny the German a strike on goal. It mattered little anyway as Khedira was (incorrectly) flagged offside. While the number of fouls suffered was a massive impediment to our play in the opening stages of the Sevilla game, the number of fouls committed by Juventus was extremely detrimental to our momentum here. The physical play continued as Eder flashed a low shot a few yards wide of Buffon’s goal and Mehdi Benatia limped off the pitch with what seemed like a groin injury to be replaced by Andrea Barzagli. The veteran made a forgettable start to the game as he joined Asamoah and Lichtsteiner in the yellow card book as he came in late on Eder after the forward flicked the ball ahead of him.

Although Inter continued to look extremely dangerous on the break, Khedira was guilty of wasting the biggest chance for the Bianconeri in the first half. Alex Sandro whipped in a dangerous cross right onto the head of the German, but he made poor contact with the ball as the header bounced harmlessly into the hands of Samir Handanovic. It was end-to-end play, though, as the lively Mauro Icardi chased a long a long ball forward from Gary Medel, shrugged off the unbalanced Giorgio Chiellini, and curled an exquisite right-footed shot narrowly wide of the far post with Buffon beaten.

However, Miralem Pjanic, playing in the regista role for the first time, looked to have beaten Handanovic with a low drive after Dybala had caused Inter problems from the inside-right channel and teed up the Bosnian, but he couldn’t quite get it on target. Nevertheless, Inter still shaded the 1st half despite failing to convert their advantage into goals. The first half ended at a delicate 0-0 scoreline.

The second half started in the same way as the first had ended — with Inter in the ascendancy. As the Juventus midfield struggled to gain a foothold on the game, the roaming Éver Banega and disciplined Joao Mario continued to interchange positions to give Pjanic much to worry about. The first big threat in the second half came courtesy of Icardi as he went down in the box after a shirt-scuffle with Barzagli but referee Tagliavento was not interested. This penalty shout was quickly followed by more danger from the Nerazzurri; Antonio Candreva fired a brilliant volley narrowly wide of the far post after Icardi had found him with a lofted pass. However, suddenly, and against the run of play, we had the breakthrough courtesy of Stephan Lichtsteiner. The brilliant Alex Sandro twisted and turned past Danilo D’Ambrosio and fired in a perfect cross for the Swiss defender to tap into the back of the net.

There was literally no time to celebrate the goal though as Inter equalized almost instantaneously. Banega floated in an inch-perfect cross from the corner for his compatriot Mauro Icardi to convincingly head past Buffon. Icardi was truly making a nuisance of himself as he now protested for another penalty, this time courtesy of a tussle with Giorgio Chiellini in the box. Again, Tagliavento was not interested but Inter certainly had rediscovered a dangerous momentum after the equalizer.

This momentum finally paid off as substitute Ivan Perisic headed in Inter’s second goal of the game. The extremely poor Asamoah was guilty of a woeful backpass that Icardi quickly intercepted. The Argentine skipped past Buffon, but couldn’t quite get the shot away from the tight angle and thus teed up the Croatian with a deft cross for the headed goal to the far post.

Within 10 minutes, the game had turned entirely upside-down.

Allegri went for broke as he chucked on Marko Pjaca for Giorgio Chiellini and changed to what seemed like a 4-3-3. Once again, the excellent Sandro whipped in a fantastic cross which substitute Gonzalo Higuaín headed a meter or so wide. Despite a late Banega red card for a second bookable offence and a bizarre Khedira penalty shout, it was all too little, too late, as the Bianconeri suffered a demoralizing loss after an uninspired and confused performance.

Pagelle

BUFFON 5.5 – Did well not to give away a penalty when Icardi skipped past him for the second goal, but it was in vain as Perisic scored anyway. Not many shots on target to deal with.

BARZAGLI 5 – Certainly haven’t seen Barzagli this flustered or confused in a long time.

BONUCCI 5 – Was really given torrid time by Icardi. He’s struggled in the last few games, maybe he needs a rest?

CHIELLINI 5 – Like with Bonucci, Icardi’s movement gave him a headache as well. I think Kaushik mentioned it in the comments, but all this shirt-groping in the box is a penalty waiting to happen against Giorgio of the Jungle.

LICHTSTEINER 5.5 – Took the goal very well, but his (totally unnecessary) yellow card put him on ice the entire game. Eder seemed to have a lot of freedom on the counter as well.

KHEDIRA 6.5 – The best of the central midfielders today. Just like against Sevilla, I’m a bit confused whether I should assess him based on his offensive or defensive output, because he seems to be very offensively-involved this season.

PJANIC 5.5 – The Great Experiment certainly didn’t pay off. Like Fefu said, this was probably the wrong time to employ the regista experiment. Banega’s and Joao Mario’s movement seemed to stifle him significantly.

ASAMOAH 4.5 – Reasonable in the first half, but bewilderingly poor in the second. It’s becoming difficult to defend him now as he just isn’t offering enough to fulfill his role in midfield. His mistake for the second goal was the nail in the coffin.

SANDRO 7 – Undoubtedly the best of the bunch today. Gave D’Ambrosio all kinds of problems and generally had a good grip on Candreva, who didn’t really feel like tracking back to defend him.

DYBALA 6 – Decent in the first half, but gradually faded away in the second. Was his performance a result of the state of the poor/unbalanced midfield, or does he have to claim some responsibility for his own disappointing outing?

MANDZUKIC 5.5 – Mostly drifted to the inside-right channel to escape Miranda’s attentions, but that wasn’t enough to threaten Inter’s defense. It’s difficult for players like him to have any type of impact in games like these.

Subs

PJACA N/A – Honestly, I feel bad giving him ratings because he only gets like 10-15 minutes per game to do anything.

HIGUAÍN 6 - Glanced a dangerous header wide but was subdued for the rest.

(Note: Didn’t rate Benatia due to his early injury.)

Manager

ALLEGRI 5,5 – The midfield was unbalanced — Khedira is basically carrying the midfield offensively, which he shouldn’t be doing — as the cries for the death of the 3-5-2 grow louder. Didn’t figure out how to counter Banega’s and Joao Mario’s movement in midfield either.

Tactics: Seeing Sounds

As mentioned earlier, Joao Mario and Banega frequently interchanged positions, roaming all over the place to make life extremely difficult for Pjanic. Since he’s not a dedicated defensive specialist, he seemed very uncomfortable throughout the game. The aforementioned duo shared defensive marking duties of the Bosnian quite efficiently as well.

This screenshot is a nice example. We see Pjanic moving forward to pressure Melo, seemingly anticipating a pass into the Brazilian. However, Banega, who has again drifted away from the Bosnian’s attention, is looking to stealthily occupy the space in behind the Bosnian. The Inter midfield certainly had a greater grip on things than the Bianconeri midfield did.

Banega was clearly enjoying himself in this game

Who are you?

This was undoubtedly a worryingly bad performance. The first half was, to me, narrowly acceptable, but the second half was appalling. The offensive-defensive balance in midfield seems all out of synch as Khedira is somehow shouldering the offensive burden from midfield. Allegri has to take blame for this peculiar turn of events because even though the results so far this season have, on the face of things, been fine (3W 1D 1L), the performances have been unconvincing.

Where last year the results at this stage were so poor that the Sassuolo loss was the final straw that forced the team into a soul-searching exercise, results now have been good enough where the players/coach probably won’t feel the shock as strongly as last year. Therefore, they will try to instigate change calmly. I always prefer a General Iroh-esque tranquility in the face of adversity, but will that be the remedy to our current ailment? These are testing times, ragazzi...

‘Cagliari have nothing to lose’

Massimo Rastelli tells his Cagliari players they have “nothing to lose” when they visit Juventus tomorrow.

The Sardinians face the Bianconeri in Turin tomorrow night, with the Isolani having thrashed Atalanta at the weekend while Juve lost at Inter.

“It’s a one-off game, anything can happen,” Rastelli pointed out in his pre-match Press conference.

“We have nothing to lose. We’ll try to play against a team of great players who have won the last five Scudetti.

“We’ll go onto the pitch with the same spirit as the previous games, holding a high defensive line. If the opponent is better then we’ll defend deeper, but only if that happens.

“If it were up to me I’d pick the same XI which played on Sunday, but we have a lot of tired or injured players so I might be forced to change.

“I’ll take my decisions tomorrow morning after speaking with the players.”

Injury woes for Juventus

http://www.football-italia.net/91757/injury-woes-juventus

Sep 20, 2016

Juventus are without Sami Khedira, Patrice Evra and Medhi Benatia for tomorrow’s clash with Cagliari.

Khedira is rested, while Benatia limped off during the 2-1 defeat to Inter on Sunday with a left adductor issue that “will continue to be monitored over the next few days.”

As for Evra, the veteran sprained his left knee during today’s training session and he will undergo tests tomorrow.

The good news for Coach Max Allegri is that Stefano Sturaro is in the squad for the first time this season, having made his comeback from injury playing for the Primavera youth team.

Juventus squad for Cagliari: Buffon, Chiellini, Pjanic, Cuadrado, Higuain, Hernanes, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Mandzukic, Lemina, Bonucci, Pjaca, Dybala, Asamoah, Dani Alves, Rugani, Neto, Lichtsteiner, Sturaro, Audero

Juventus vs Cagliari Match Preview

http://www.juvefc.com/juventus-vs-cagliari-match-preview-scouting/?

Sep 20, 2016

juventus

Juventus

The best medicine after a bad loss is to play right away and redeem yourselves: thanks to the midweek match day, Juventus will have the chance to do just that. The performance against Inter was poor from every standpoint: technical, tactical, physical, character. Despite grabbing the lead, the opponents were superior in all facets of the games and quickly found the equalizer. It looked like Inter wanted it more and were more prepared, while maybe Juventus underestimated the enemy, which, to be honest, was very different, much much better compared to his previous games. The squad was outmatched.

The two most glaring issues were the fragility of the defence and the position of Miralem Pjanic. BBC had a slow start last season as well, conceding way too easily: maybe it is related to conditioning, after all they are all big players, but keeping only two clean sheets out of five matches is subpar. It is noteworthy though that three goals came from set pieces and one from a bad pass in a very dangerous position, so it should be relatively easy to clean those up.

Pjanic made his much anticipated debut as deep-lying playmaker and it did not go well. The center of gravity of the team was too low, he did not have many, if any, illuminating passes and he did damage only in the couple of times when he got close to the box. Of course, he is also not a physical presence in front of the defence. Despite being in a central position, he was not involved enough and was sucked into the mediocrity of the rest of the teammates. Putting him there takes away a number of chances that he could create in another position, so he will have to play much better to make it work.

Despite some early reports indicating a switch to 4-3-3, Massimiliano Allegri should opt for 3-5-2 in this one as well. Leonardo Bonucci will not play and Daniele Rugani will take his spot as Medhi Benatia left the Inter game early with an apparent hamstring injury, whose severity has not been revealed yet. Dani Alves should reclaim his spot on the right: Stephan Lichsteiner scored but did not have a good game on Sunday. On the other hand, Alex Sandro was incredible and it is really hard to bench him now that he is on fire. Patrice Evra suffered a knee sprain in the last practice, hopefully it is not too severe.

As it has been and as it will be for at least a month, the biggest conundrums lie in the midfield, which will inevitably continue to be heavily scrutinized after the deadline day debacle. None among the trio stood out on Sunday night and unfortunately Kwadwo Asamoah had that costly turnover that led to the Ivan Perisic goal. The coach pointed out that Sami Khedira has played seven games in a row, which is very rare for him, almost unprecedented: he will be spared and he has not been called up.

At this point, despite lacking some of traits of the prototypical player in that position, vision and long range passing just for starters, Lemina is the best option in front of the defence. Allegri strongly supported Hernanes in the pregame presser, so he might actually have a chance to start. The coach also suggested moving Juan Cuadrado, Alves or Sandro in the box-to-box position as fallback option: they would add an element of speed, but it would a big gamble. Stefano Sturaro will be back in a bench role.

Paulo Dybala could be given a day off: Allegri pumped the breaks on Marko Pjaca, saying that he needs more time, but he would be the most natural replacement for the Argentinian starlet. After being dropped against Inter, Gonzalo Higuain will return to the starting XI and a heavyweight couple with Mario Mandzukic is a legit opportunity. In case the early reports turn out to be correct, Juventus have the ability to field a very dangerous 4-3-3 featuring Cuadrado-Higuain-Pjaca frontline.

Probable lineup:

3-5-2: Buffon; Barzagli, Rugani, Chiellini; Alves, Lemina, Hernanes, Pjanic, Sandro; Higuain, Dybala.

Injuries:

Marchisio (knee), Khedira (rest), Evra (knee), Benatia (hamstring), Mandragora (foot)

Suspensions:

None.

cagliari

Cagliari

Cagliari have put together a very decent team and should be able to separate from other sad sacks and to avoid being involved in the relegation race late in the season. In a fashion very typical of the low-table team, they struggled in the two road games, against Genoa and Bologna who are not the strongest opponents in the world, while they had two glorious performances at home, first coming back from 2-0 against Roma and then dismantling Atalanta with a 3-0.

They actually try to play well and create chances, but this has backfired in the away matches and against Roma because they have a very slow and fragile defence: the strikers Marco Borriello and Marco Sau had a hot start, but they can not always outscore the opponent.

In the last game they recovered one of their best player, Joao Pedro, who was sidelined by a serious hamstring injury late in the preseason. The Brazilian attacking midfielder unleashed hell on the Atalanta backline and has always had a knack for scoring even when he was a more obscure player. The diamond formation of Massimo Rastelli relies heavily on the production of the player in the hole and last season Pedro delivered big time. However, Juventus could catch a break because he might not start considering that he was pulled early in the last game because he was fatigued and it would be his second game in three days after not playing for forty days.

They will be particularly thin in the midfielder: Artur Ionita shattered his fibula against Bologna and will miss a good chuck of the season, while Mauricio Isla, who moved up in the last game, will miss the Juventus game. Daniele Dessena is also out after last year’s gruesome injury. So they have two holes to fill: at right-back and in the midfield. As for the first one, it will be one between Fabio Pisacane, Luca Bittante or the CB Luca Ceppitelli sliding on the flank. In the midfielder, the coach can choose between the veteran Gianni Munari, Panagiotis Tachtisidis or Nicola Barella, who could also play more advanced if Pedro can not go.

At times in the first couple of games, they used 3-5-2 to be a little more conservative, but it has not really worked out and it distorted the team, but of course it could be an option in a tough road game.

It could be a trap game: Cagliari came away from Torino with points in five of the last eight encounters and scored in six of them, so they must not be taken lightly. The hope is that Juventus will answer the wake up call after the Inter game.

Probable lineup:

4-3-1-2: Storari; Pisacane, Alves, Ceppitelli, Murru; Munari, Di Gennaro, Padoin; Barella; Sau, Borriello.

Injuries:

Ionita (fibula), Isla, Dessena (fibia), Farias (calf).

Suspensions:

None.

Padoin: ‘Juventus will be angry’

http://www.football-italia.net/91781/padoin-‘juventus-will-be-angry’?

Sep 21, 2016

Cagliari’s Simone Padoin warns his former Juventus teammates “will be angry” after the Inter defeat.

The versatile midfielder spent five seasons in Turin, and will return tonight with the Isolani to face a hurting Bianconeri.

“More than anything it’ll be emotional,” Padoin admitted in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’ll be back to a beautiful city which I lived in for five wonderful years. I’ll see everyone with great pleasure, but on the pitch the emotion will disappear.

“Is it impossible? Not impossible, no. It’s a game to be played, but if they’re at 100 per cent then it’s difficult. They’ll need to be at 50-60 per cent and we’ll need a bit of luck.

“They’ll be very angry after the defeat against Inter.”

Padoin was then asked about his former teammates, as well as their chances this season.

“I have a special relationship with [Andrea] Barzagli. But I’d say all of the defence, from [Gigi] Buffon, [Leo] Bonucci, [Giorgio] Chiellini to [Stephan] Lichtsteiner, who is the most Italian of all!

“Anyone who wants to emerge should learn from them, they hold the secrets to success.

“Has Juve’s level dropped? Are you joking? They have 25 or 26 phenomenal players, and they could field two Scudetto-winning teams. I don’t see a decline.

“Knowing them I think they’ll be more angry about the match with Sassuolo that they won than the draw with Sevilla in the Champions League.

“With Sassuolo they suffered more and conceded more shots. That’s the way they think.”

Line-ups: Juventus-Cagliari

http://www.football-italia.net/91819/line-ups-juventus-cagliari?

Sep 21, 2016

Juventus need to get back on track and make numerous changes, including the return of Gonzalo Higuain, against Cagliari.

It kicks off at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

The Bianconeri have been losing some of their early sheen lately, drawing 0-0 with Sevilla in the Champions League and beaten 2-1 by Inter on Sunday.

Miralem Pjanic is still looking for his best position in midfield and €90m man Higuain isn’t quite up to full fitness yet after gaining weight this summer.

Medhi Benatia and Patrice Evra picked up injuries over the last couple of days, joining Claudio Marchisio in the stands, but Stefano Sturaro is on the bench for the first time this season.

Leonardo Bonucci is rested in favour of Daniele Rugani, while Hernanes steps in for Sami Khedira, allowing Pjanic more of a free role rather than as deep-lying playmaker.

Dani Alves is back in the starting XI and so is Higuain, who partners a Paulo Dybala still goalless this season.

Juan Cuadrado is not even on the bench due to personal reasons, but it's not believed to be anything serious.

Cagliari’s confidence is growing after their first victory of the campaign, crushing Atalanta 3-0, and Marco Borriello aims to add another former club to his list of victims.

Marco Sau and Joao Pedro also start, while Simone Padoin and Marco Storari face their old teammates.

Mauricio Isla is out injured along with Diego Farias, Artur Ionita and Daniele Dessena.

Cagliari have only ever won one of their 35 trips to Juve’s home, a 3-2 thriller in January 2009, losing 19.

The last five games between these two sides produced 16 goals.

Juventus:

Buffon; Rugani, Barzagli, Chiellini; Dani Alves, Lemina, Hernanes, Pjanic, Alex Sandro; Dybala, Higuain

Cagliari:

Storari; Bittante, Ceppitelli, Alves, Murru; Barella, Di Gennaro, Padoin; João Pedro; Borriello, Sau

Juventus 4-0 Cagliari: Higuain finds

the net as Allegri's men stroll to win

The Argentine kept up his fine record so far this season with another strike, with

Daniele Rugani, Dani Alves and Mario Lemina also scoring in an easy win.

Sep 21, 2016

Gonzalo Higuain celebrated his return to the starting line-up with his fourth goal in five games as Juventus routed Cagliari 4-0 to move top of Serie A.

The Argentina striker, who signed from rivals Napoli for €90million in the transfer window, was controversially omitted from Juve's XI in the 2-1 Derby d'Italia defeat to rivals Inter at the weekend.

But Higuain made up for lost time and marked an all-action performance with the second goal at Juventus Stadium as the hosts ran out comfortable winners on Wednesday.

Massimiliano Allegri handed a first start of the season to defender Daniele Rugani and the 22-year-old repaid his faith with Juve's opening goal after 14 minutes.

Higuain's effort and Dani Alves' first for the club made it 3-0 before half-time and Juventus were home and dry when Mario Lemina's effort deflected off Luca Ceppitelli in the closing stages.

The result leaves Cagliari with just three points from their opening five Serie A fixtures, while Juventus leapfrogged Napoli - who drew at Genoa - to go top.

Juve, who had failed to win their past two matches, started brightly and Miralem Pjanic brought out the best of Marco Storari with a low, bouncing free-kick that was turned around the post.

Paulo Dybala, still without a goal this season, put Higuain through on goal moments later and Storari made a good reflex save.

Juve's early dominance was rewarded in the 14th minute when Rugani fired into an unguarded goal after Higuain's superb volley from Pjanic's chipped free-kick was only parried by Storari.

Giorgio Chiellini made an important block to prevent Davide Di Gennaro from levelling, but Higuain soon had a deserved goal with a thumping rebound-header from Pjanic's shot.

And Dani Alves essentially ended the game as a contest shortly before half-time with a low drive from the edge of the area.

Allegri used the second half to rest veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, with Brazilian understudy Neto making his first appearance of the season, and Dani Alves almost doubled his Juventus goal tally when he hit a fierce shot from outside the box that flew narrowly over the crossbar just before the hour mark.

With three consecutive away games on the horizon, Juventus eased their foot off the gas in the second half but there was a sense that the Bianconeri were keen for Dybala to get on the scoresheet.

Dybala netted 23 goals in all competitions last term, but he was restricted to a blocked shot before being substituted after 72 minutes.

Pjanic went close to making it 4-0 with a free-kick that Storari saved well at his near post shortly before Hernanes - making his first start of the season - hit a shot that was dipping under the bar from 25 yards, but the former Juve keeper made a superb one-handed save.

But, with eight minutes left on the clock, Lemina pounced on a knockdown from substitute Mario Mandzukic and his shot nestled in the goal after hitting Ceppitelli and leaving Storari little chance to make the save.

Four-star Juve back on top

Juventus certainly got back on track, and top of the table, thrashing Cagliari

4-0 with Daniele Rugani and Dani Alves unexpected scorers.

Sep 21, 2016

The Bianconeri were in dire need of a boost after a 0-0 Champions League draw with Sevilla and 2-1 Serie A defeat to Inter on Sunday. Patrice Evra and Medhi Benatia joined Claudio Marchisio on the treatment table, so Daniele Rugani and Hernanes got rare starts. Gonzalo Higuain and Dani Alves returned to the starting XI. It was a comeback of sorts for Marco Storari, Simone Padoin and Marco Borriello against their former club, though Mauricio Isla was injured.

Cagliari had only ever won one of their 35 trips to Juve’s home, a 3-2 thriller in January 2009, losing 19. The last five games between these two sides produced 16 goals.

Miralem Pjanic was given more of a free role this time and his early free kick was beaten away, then Storari rushed off his line to stop a Higuain dinked finish with his elbow.

Storari was again decisive with a wonderful one-handed save on Higuain’s volley from close range, but could do nothing when Daniele Rugani tapped in the rebound.

It was quite a way to mark the young defender’s seasonal debut.

Juve were lucky when Mario Lemina brought down Borriello in the box, but the striker had been flagged offside. Higuain also struck the woodwork with an angled drive.

Moments later Storari once more performed a fine reaction save on Pjanic, but just like the first goal, Juve were quicker to react and Higuain turned in the rebound.

Cagliari’s defending on a corner left something to be desired, as Pjanic rolled it to the edge of the box for totally unmarked Dani Alves to smash his first goal in a Juventus jersey.

Gigi Buffon went on at half-time with a muscular problem and Storari continued to keep the scoreline down with fine saves on a Pjanic free kick at the near post and Hernanes lob.

Mario Lemina thought he’d added a fourth late on, but his finish at the near post was parried by Storari and bounced in off a helpless Luca Ceppitelli.

Juventus 4 - Cagliari 0: Initial reaction

Sep 21, 2016

If there’s anybody who knows about the mindset of a Juventus squad, it’s somebody who was with the club when the current five-year title-winning run began. That person would be a certain Simone Padoin, who is now playing his football for Cagliari. This is what Padoin had to say about Juventus before Cagliari made the trip to Turin to face the reining Serie A champions:

“It’s a game to be played, but if they’re at 100 percent then it’s difficult. They’ll need to be at 50-60 percent and we’ll need a bit of luck. They’ll be very angry after the defeat against Inter.”

How’s Juventus leading 3-0 going into halftime do when it comes to being angry?

That’s exactly what happened, as a dominant Juventus showing through the opening first half resulted in putting things in cruise control come the second 45 minutes of play. Juventus prevented Cagliari from doing much of anything to write home about, while goals from Daniele Rugani, Gonzalo Higuain and Dani Alves pretty much showed us that Juve were letting off a little bit of steam in the process based on how the last Serie A game played out.

And considering how Juve have played over the last couple of games, this kind of performance, one where Juventus just absolutely dominated from the opening whistle onward, it’s a pretty pleasant change.

I understand there will be a “Yeah, but...” kind of reaction for some folks. But considering the alternative, considering how Juventus has played against the last couple of opponents, this was exactly what the doctor ordered. Juve needed to right the ship, and that’s exactly what they did against a team they should beat even with the starting lineup being shuffled around a little bit.

So, good on you, Juventus, for doing what a lot of people hoped you would do against a newly-promoted club. That’s more like it. And how nice of Napoli to keep the seat atop the Serie A table warm for all of the boys.

RANDOM OBSERVATIONS
  • Rugani, in his first start of the year, scored his first Juventus goal and became the first Italian player to score for Juventus this season. Just like we all though would happen, right? Yeah, right.
  • How many of you saw Andrea Barzagli make that last-ditch tackle about two minutes into the game and think something along the lines of “Ah, well now he’s back to normal!”? Because I know I did.
  • Alex Sandro is good. He’s really, really good.
  • FIRST HALF STATS!

Marco Storari made seven saves in the first half. Gianluigi Buffon touched the ball a total of nine times. One of these things is not like the other...

  • Storari had every look of being in God Mode in the early stages against his former club. He also made a couple of fantastic saves in the second half to prevent Juventus from getting a fourth, a fifth or a sixth goal. Too bad, at least for him, that the rest of that Cagliari defense isn’t all that good at all.
  • As much as I’ve liked what Mario Lemina has done as a holding/deep-lying midfielder so far this season, he did look pretty good as more of a box-to-box player against Cagliari. Sure, his final pass was lacking a few time and he probably should have had an assist or two in the first half, but he definitely showed some ability to play in another role Wednesday night. Considering how busy the schedule is and who is currently available to Max Allegri, it’s good news that Lemina is really showing what kind of player he is.
  • Speaking of Allegri, Dani Alves had just scored the third goal of the first half and moments later we heard Max screaming his head off at somebody. I mean, as much heat as the guy has gotten lately around here, you can’t help but love that the dude is demanding more and more from his team after they just went up by three goals with time still to play in the first half.
  • Nice of Allegri to give Marko Pjaca more than 10 minutes of playing time. Pjaca, unsurprisingly, immediately tried to break a defender’s ankles after he entered the game.
  • The guy Pjaca came on for in the second half, Paulo Dybala, is obviously in a bit of a funk. You could definitely tell he was a little frustrated as he walked toward the Juventus bench — and that was before he started messing with his hair and revealing a bit of a frown on his face. I would think that with Dybala not getting a rest Wednesday that one would be in the cards against his former club, Palermo, over the weekend. That wouldn’t the worst thing in the world considering how many minutes he’s played so far this season. And he may just need a mental day off more than anything. Either way, Dybala will be fine because he’s shown us all just what kind of player he is in the past.
  • I like when Juventus wins. And I like when Juventus wins by a comfortable goal margin. It’s a lot better than sitting around and wanting to pull my hair out while watching Juve do absolutely nothing that would be considered something positive.

Gonzalo Higuain on target as Juventus thrash Cagliari

Juventus returned to the top of the Serie A table by humbling Cagliari 4-0 in Turin on Wednesday.

Strikes from Daniele Rugani, Gonzalo Higuain, Dani Alves and an unfortunate Luca Ceppitelli own goal saw the Scudetto holders leapfrog Napoli, who were held to a goalless draw at Genoa.

Cagliari, meanwhile, suffered a third straight defeat on the road.

Juve had a point to prove following their Derby d'Italia defeat to Inter Milan and the champions wasted no time setting about promoted Cagliari.

Marco Storari did well to deny Miralem Pjanic and Higuain before Rugani scored a rare defender's goal in the 14th minute.

The former Empoli player was in the right place to tap the ball home, opening his account in Bianconero, after Storari saved Higuain's effort.

Juve kept pushing and doubled up through Higuain in the 33rd minute, the prolific Argentinian cleaning up Pjanic's spilled shot to infuriate Storari.

It was 3-0 at half-time thanks to Alves, who grabbed his first Juve goal by converting a Pjanic cross six minutes before the break.

Confident the game had already been won, Juve allowed veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to sit out the second half with Neto taking his place.

Any excitement was at a low level until Pjanic and then Hernanes tested the impressive Storari in the final 15 minutes, restoring a number of home fans to their feet.

Mario Lemina made sure everyone was standing when his close-range attempt cannoned off Storari and against the covering Ceppitelli before going in.

Allegri: 'Excessive Juve criticism'

mlmuki.jpg

http://www.football-italia.net/91828/allegri-excessive-juve-criticism

Sep 21, 2016

Max Allegri felt Juventus “answered excessive critics” with a 4-0 demolition job on Cagliari that put them back on top of the table.

As Napoli were held to a 0-0 draw at Genoa, the Bianconeri climbed back to the leadership of Serie A.

“I was satisfied to get back on top of the table and we did well,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

“The lads took the right approach, though perhaps when 2-0 up we should’ve controlled the tempo, and instead we poured forward looking for a third goal with a little too much haste.

“Still, it’s a good answer to the rather excessive criticism of our performance on Sunday against Inter.”

Gigi Buffon went off at half-time, but the Coach assured it was “just a knock, nothing serious. I don’t care if people say Juventus are strong or not strong. I am interested in getting to the end and winning the Scudetto.

“It takes a little time, let’s not try to pretend Miralem Pjanic can just replace Paul Pogba, as they are two completely different players with different characteristics and physicality. Pjanic missed the first two games and can do very well as an old-fashioned Number 10.”

Paulo Dybala has still not scored a single goal this season.

“He did well on a technical level. He didn’t score, but was good at extricating himself from the Cagliari traffic and using his technique for that. I am very happy with what he’s doing.”

Allegri hails Juventus youngsters after Cagliari win

The Italian head coach was full of praise for his side's “kids” after they put their

Inter humbling behind them with a dominant victory in Serie A on Wednesday.

Massimiliano Allegri hailed his young players after they helped to inspire Juventus to a return to winning ways with a 4-0 victory over Cagliari.

Defender Daniele Rugani, 22, making his first start of the season, scored the opening goal of a comfortable win in which Gonzalo Higuain and Dani Alves were also on target.

Allegri also brought on 21-year-old Croatian winger Marko Pjaca in the second half while Juventus' fourth goal was forced in by 23-year-old Mario Lemina via a deflection.

And afterwards the Bianconeri coach paid tribute to his younger players for their part in Juve putting the defeat against Inter behind them.

He told Premium Sports: "We were very good immediately, giving intensity to the game.

"[Paulo] Dybala scored 19 goals last season and he played very well tonight.

"The kids did very well. After 2-0, we could slow down. We must also learn to manage the development of the game."

The result moved Juventus to the top of Serie A thanks to Genoa holding Napoli to a 0-0 draw, and Allegri urged his players to focus on their forthcoming matches against Palermo in Serie A and Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

"We must remain calm goals and make Saturday and Tuesday our aims," he said. "The important thing was to win again and get back to the top."

Higuain scored his fourth goal in five games after being restored to the starting line-up and Allegri refused to rule out a possible three-man attack featuring the Argentine alongside compatriot Dybala and Mario Mandzukic - who replaced Higuain in the second half - in the future.

"Last year Mandzukic was crucial and this year it will be the same. He can also play with Higuain," he added.

"[A three man attack] may happen in the league or in the Champions League. We just need to find the right balance."

Dani Alves relentless in dominant

Exhibiting their superior level of skill, Juventus thrashed Cagliari 4-0 and climbed to the top of the Serie A table on Wednesday. Allowed to neglect their defensive duties and indulge in attacking play, the team pushed forward with confidence, producing an abundance of shots on goal safe in the knowledge that their opponent was simply not good enough to compete. In truth, the Old Lady never needed to play at her best to score all the goals.

Positives

During the Antonio Conte era, Juventus were a side that boasted creativity and quality through the middle with less brilliance coming from wide areas. Now, however, we are treated to the technique of Dani Alves and his understanding with Mario Lemina to his right while Alex Sandro dominates the left lane. Perfect crossing, excellent passes and relentless forays going forward, Juve's excellence in the wide areas made them unstoppable against Cagliari and will leave them in good stead going forward this season.

Negatives

When Paulo Dybala plays with confidence, his unique quality truly stands out. However, against Cagliari, we saw him overcomplicating matters, looking flustered on the ball and overcompensating for what he deemed to be his misgivings when he should have been revelling in the beauty of his technique. If he plays to his potential, he is the best player on the team, but lacking in confidence he is simply hindering the side that rely on his instinctive play.

Manager rating out of 10

6 -- It was wise of Massimiliano Allegri to play Hernanes as the director of midfield, granting Lemina the freedom to push forward and demonstrate his skill. The manner in which the players combined down the right side showed how well prepared they were, executing their tasks efficiently and confidently. However, Allegri must find a way to integrate Marko Pjaca into the side. He should use games against opponents that struggle to attack in order to experiment with different formations.

Player ratings

GK Gianluigi Buffon, 6 -- Cagliari had zero shots on target, so Buffon was a spectator before leaving at half-time with a slight knock.

DF Daniele Rugani, 7 --He scored the opening goal and played with maturity and composure despite his lack of playing time overall. Even more impressive was how he pushed forward and took part in offensive movements.

DF Andrea Barzagli, 6 -- Played in the middle, Barzagli organised the defence perfectly, stepping out when necessary and using his experience and composure to ensure solidity.

DF Giorgio Chiellini, 6 -- This was an easy game for the defender, who was rarely called upon. Intercepted very well.

DF Dani Alves, 7 -- This was a wonderful performance from the ex-Barcelona full-back, who was relentless in his pursuit of offensive brilliance. He scored a goal and nearly added another as he terrorised the opponent down the right wing. Combined well with Lemina.

r129410_1296x729_16-9.jpg&w=738&site=esp
Dani Alves' 39th-minute goal highlighted a special performance from the ex-Barcelona full-back.

DF Alex Sandro, 7 -- Sandro delivered a superb performance as he dominated the left flank, creating opportunities and always taking part in the movement. He must be regarded as one of the best attacking wing-backs in the world.

MF Mario Lemina, 7 -- Granted more freedom while featuring next to Alves, the youngster played with confidence, character and intelligence. He alternated positions with Alves, demonstrated his technique on the ball to evade pressure and made timely runs forward to create goal-scoring opportunities. This role suits him much better.

MF Hernanes, 6 -- He is a solid player who rarely dazzles or disappoints, and you have to admire his dedication to the cause. He was excellent on the defensive side of things and perfectly executed the requirements of his role, spreading the play and providing a defensive shield when required.

MF Miralem Pjanic, 6 -- Still not playing at the level expected of him, Pjanic missed a great opportunity. He lacks dynamism, but his vision and passing in the final third are vital for a Juve side in need of creative influences.

FW Paulo Dybala, 6 -- The lack of confidence is evident. While he exhibits technique in his style of play and creates opportunities, he overthought every move. He must rely on his instincts a little more, trust in his abilities and play with more arrogance rather than overcompensating for not scoring the goals.

FW Gonzalo Higuain, 7 -- Scoring a goal and helping to create another, the Argentine led the line and fought with aggression to create chances. Fast becoming the man to depend on, he helps his teammates, takes his shots and plays with a winning mentality.

Substitutes

GK Neto, 6 -- He had nothing to do.

FW Marko Pjaca, N/R -- Given 20 or so minutes to play, the Croatian demonstrated technique and intelligence on the ball, acceleration and passing. He has to be allowed to start one game soon to observe his potential.

FW Mario Mandzukic, N/R -- He used his physicality to create problems but was granted only a few minutes.

Allegri: Higuain-Dybala-Mandzukic attack a possibility

Sep 22, 2016

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri was understandably happier with his side’s performance today as he saw them attacking relentlessly in the first half to go up by three, and complete the game 4-0 victors. In the process, the defending champions went back to the top of the table, an observation not missed by the mister.

“I was satisfied to get back on top of the table and we did well.

“The lads took the right approach, though perhaps when 2-0 up we should’ve controlled the tempo, and instead we poured forward looking for a third goal with a little too much haste.

“Still, it’s a good answer to the rather excessive criticism of our performance on Sunday against Inter.”

Club captain and figurehead Gigi Buffon left the game at halftime with an unknown injury, but the coach said it was minor.

“Just a knock, nothing serious.”

He went on to address criticism of how Juve have been playing.

“I don’t care if people say Juventus are strong or not strong.

On the topic of last season’s star Paulo Dybala who has yet to score this season.

“He did well on a technical level. He didn’t score, but was good at extricating himself from the Cagliari traffic and using his technique for that. I am very happy with what he’s doing.”

He insisted that the club needed to maintain their focus on the upcoming games -

"We must remain calm goals and make Saturday and Tuesday our aims. The important thing was to win again and get back to the top."

Gonzalo Higuain scored his fourth goal in five games after returning to the starting XI, and the manager did not rule out the possibility of featuring a three-man attack featuring the Argentine alongside compatriot Dybala and Mario Mandzukic who had a good game replacing Higuain today.

"Last year Mandzukic was crucial and this year it will be the same. He can also play with Higuain.

"[A three man attack] may happen in the league or in the Champions League. We just need to find the right balance."

Barzagli: Cagliari win a signal

Sep 22, 2016

Andrea Barzagli admits Juventus “sent a signal to ourselves” by beating Cagliari 4-0 in Serie A on Wednesday.

Juve resoundingly returned to winning ways after their Derby d’Italia defeat to Inter over the weekend, and Barzagli hinted his side were complacent in that match but learned from the error of their ways against Cagliari.

“We entered the pitch fired up and with desire to play, which is what we missed against Inter,” the defender told Sky Sport Italia.

“We also sent a signal to ourselves. If we attack and we go forward, we can have fun.

“If we take everything for granted, nothing will come of it. We’re happy, even if we didn’t achieve anything.

“We know that in Italy, whoever wins has the best defence. We want to continue like this.

“The thought at the end of the first half was to not concede. We have to work again, but it’s a good step forward.”

Barzagli also caught up with former Juve teammates Marco Storari and Simone Padoin after the game.

“We said our goodbyes. We shared some good times and they’re my friends,” he added.

“I’m sorry to them for the defeat, but we’re happy for our victory.”

cagliari-2016-serie-a-round-5-final-score-recap-result

Sep 22, 2016

Good morning, folks, and welcome back to another edition of “How To Say In 1,000 Words, What You Could Have Said In 500”! My name is Kaushik, and you’re joining me outside the Juventus Stadium in Turin, where today’s topic of discussion is the recently-concluded Serie A match between Juventus and Cagliari. Everyone was wondering how Juventus would respond to a week that’s been perceived as somewhat of a reality check. Former player and Juventus legend and victory cigar, Simone Padoin, warned that Cagliari’s chances seemed bleak as they were sure to run into an angry Juventus this Wednesday evening, and boy, the lads sure didn’t disappoint!

Like the last team to visit Juventus Stadium in Serie A, Cagliari came to Turin with a very Italian side and sought to play their brand of football rather than simply park the bus. While this made for an extremely open game from the get-go, they certainly did so to their detriment. On the second minute itself, Miralem Pjanic fired in a long free kick straight at goal, which former Juventus fan favorite Marco Storari somewhat clumsily kept out. Juventus were pouring men forward with deadly intent from the get go, but a long ball over the top towards Marco Sau could have created a sticky moment for Gigi Buffon, had Andrea Barzagli not intervened with a brilliant last-ditch intercepting tackle. The veteran brought out another brilliant tackle moments later, and Paulo Dybala broke down the right, before playing a sweet ball through to Gonzalo Higuain, who brilliantly attacked the space between the two centerbacks. The angle was tight, however, and Storari saved his attempt well.

In an eager attempt to atone for the lackluster performance against Inter over the weekend, the Juventus players were playing with a fire and determination to be first to every ball on the pitch. Soon, Dani Alves broke down the right and fired in a pinpoint cross at Higuain, who once again held back his run to find space between the two centerbacks, but his header was straight at Storari. Juventus were clearly knocking at the door, and with pressure mounting, they got their well-deserved lead at the 14 minute mark.

From a very central free kick, Pjanic fired in a brilliantly lobbed ball that Higuain expertly volleyed first time at goal, only to be met by an even more impressive save by his nemesis for the night, Storari. Luckily, Daniele Rugani was on hand to tap into an open net, his first goal as a Juventus player.

The team kept the pressure up, however, and were eager to double the lead and put the game to rest early on. Alex Sandro really should have done better after having met a wonderful Dybala cross, only to fire his bullet header just wide of the far post.

Higuain was proving to be a handful for the Cagliari defense, and in the 33rd minute mark, he collected the ball after some wonderfully crisp midfield passing some 25 metres from goal, before deftly cutting past his man and firing a piledriver shot that agonizingly struck the upright and went out for a goal kick. From the resulting goal kick, however, Cagliari clumsily gave the ball away to the high Juventus press, and Sandro played in Pjanic in the box with acres of space. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, he pulled out another miracle save from Storari, only for the rebound to fall kindly to Higuain this time, who made no mistake in tapping in to score a very well deserved goal.

Juventus were clearly enjoying themselves, and they made it 3-0 soon later. From a corner, Pjanic played a perfectly weighted low pass outside the box, for an onrushing Alves to fire a neat finish into the far bottom corner.

Cagliari made two changes at the break to try and enforce some modicum of damage control, for this Juventus machine was certainly in the mood today. Somewhat surprisingly, Gigi Buffon came off at halftime for Norberto Neto, who made his first appearance of the season. The second half began more quietly than the first, with a lot of physical challenges and fouls made in the middle of the park, disrupting play for the most part.

Marko Pjaca came on for a tired Dybala at the 72-minute mark, and he immediately broke down the left flank and won a free kick just outside the box. Despite the narrow angle, Pjanic went straight for goal and demanded another great save from Storari. The ball broke kindly for Hernanes, who fired in an absolute missile that was heading for the top corner had Storari not made another miracle save.

Soon, Mario Mandzukic came on for Higuain, and also had an instant impact. On the 84-minute mark, Pjanic floated in a wonderful long ball for Mandzukic to head back across into the path of Lemina. The Gabonese controlled the ball under immense pressure, and his stretched finish was saved by the immense Storari. Once again the rebound proved to be his bane however, as this time it was bundled over the line by his own defender Ceppitelli.

The game concluded with a double chance for the Croatian duo of Pjaca and Mandzukic. The younger Croat showed tremendous strength to break into the Cagliari half, before threading through a wonderful pass for his veteran compatriot, but his finish was poor and went well wide. The very next minute Hernanes launched a gorgeous ball over the top that Pjaca brought down brilliantly, but his first touch narrowed his angle down significantly, and he could only lob the ball over both Storari and the crossbar. That proved to be the last bit of action for what was a dominant Juventus display!

TACTICS

Juventus coach Max Allegri opted to rotate his squad for this game, and Rugani and Hernanes both got their first starts of the season. It is worth nothing that while Juventus lined up in their customary 3-5-2, they attacked in a far different and more offensive shape. I consider the crucial part of this change to be Pjanic, and his free-roaming role as an outside midfielder.

The team pressed really high up the pitch, with the outside midfielders, Pjanic and Lemina, pushing up to pressurize their midfield. And, to complement this, both Rugani and Chiellini enjoyed tremendous success in pushing up and denying Cagliari any space to even enter our third of the pitch. Each took turns in starving attacking midfielder Joao Pedro of the ball completely, while the other two kept the forwards, Boriello and Sau in their pockets.

While attacking, the team adopted what resembled a 3-4-2-1 shape, with Alves and Sandro playing more as traditional wingers than wingbacks, the narrow Cagliari formation affording them a lot of space to dominate the flanks. Lemina held a very restrained position next to Hernanes, and this afforded Pjanic the freedom to wreak havoc by drifting further forward from his left midfield position. Dybala ended up mirroring this by dropping deep and drifting to the right, and it was only while defending that he maintained a more advanced position than Pjanic. However, the left flank was the far more controlled and straightforward flank, with Sandro stretching the Cagliari defense to great effect, and Pjanic linking up very well with him in the space between defense and midfield.

On the right, it was a bit of a roulette of position changing, as Alves played as much more of an auxiliary midfielder than a winger, and he incessantly drifted into the middle of the pitch, with Lemina and Dybala frequently pushing right in his place. This part baffled me somewhat, and while the position changing might have been a nightmare for Cagliari to deal with in terms of marking and watching runs, it limited both Alves and Dybala’s productivity in the final third significantly. It’s Alves who you want cutting to the byline and firing crosses in, while Dybala creates from the center, not the vice versa. Whoscored tells me that Alves had 137 touches of the ball, which was 40 more than his nearest competitor, Pjanic. A pretty baffling statistic.

It is worth noting however, that a lot of freedom that our midfield enjoyed stemmed from the presence of Hernanes, who even when not on the ball, was required to be marked by one of the Cagliari midfielders. For the most part, this was Joao Pedro, and this played a big role in his quiet 45 minutes on the pitch. Hernanes for his part, kept it very simple and was very positive in possession, pushing the team as a whole forward with intelligent passing, and affording space for Pjanic to make plays with, and for Lemina to bulldoze through, which they did to great effect.

Le Pagelle

BUFFON 6 – Il Capitano had absolutely nothing to do for the half he spent on the pitch, and he might as well have called up his financial advisor and made plans for his retirement. It would have been a more productive 45 minutes at least.

RUGANI 7.5 – Extremely promising seasonal debut for the youngster, as he continued on from his impressive preseason showings by slotting into the backline with complete ease. He dominated Marco Boriello throughout, and left the veteran frustrated on the ground on multiple occasions. It’s amazing to see the difference in his composure on the ball as compared to last year, and it looks like he’s adapting well to the “build from the back” play style we possess. The goal will give him a world of a confidence, and here’s hoping he gets more minutes soon.

BARZAGLI 7 – Extremely solid, smart and efficiently tidy. It was a welcome return to form for Barzagli, who had a difficult evening against Inter after coming on for Medhi Benatia. He had a relatively quiet evening with little to do, but he still showed supreme awareness and reflexes with some wonderful last minute tackles and interceptions.

CHIELLINI 7 – Far more composed and reassured showing from King Kong, too. He pushed up and dominated Sau for his entire time on the pitch. He is also showing a budding synergy with Alex Sandro on the left, both while defending and attacking, and this is heartening. Maybe he just needs some time to return to his usual lofty levels.

DANI ALVES 6.5 – Alves is proving to be a bit of question mark. His positioning really begs the question of whether it’s Allegri who’s instructing him to play that way, or he’s using Allegri’s “play with freedom” motto and his position as an experienced champion to try and put himself in the middle of the action more. Either way, it’s resulting in him spending the majority of the match away from the flank — which is a shame because when he does get into crossing positions, he almost always gives Higuain/Mandzukic something to fight for. Took his goal excellently, though. That isn’t to say he didn’t play well, for his ability to link up is world class, just that he’s spending far too much time away from the flank, reducing his efficacy, and hence Dybala’s too as a result.

LEMINA 8 – Man of the Match for me. He absolutely dominated the midfield. He displayed a range of passing that I wasn’t sure he possessed, which clearly points to him having the composure to be less adventurous when playing as the midfield pivot. He certainly has a deft touch however, and the way he used his ball control and strength to bully his way into the opposing half is very reminiscent of Pogba. He was very sound defensively, too, and intercepted the ball many times. Unlucky that he couldn’t finish the chance that ended up being an own goal, but he is fast carving a crucial place in this midfield.

HERNANES 7 – I was happily surprised with the Brazilian, as he had a very encouraging match. Without being tasked with too much defensive work, he always made himself available for the pass and with smart runners on either side of him, he spread the play and pushed the team forward extremely well. He also looks much more efficient on the ball, by not talking the two or three extra touches he was taking last year, and moving it around quicker.

PJANIC 7.5 – The Bosnian is definitely far more suited to this role in this system. His movement and silky touch was a major source of inspiration to many of our attacking moves. I expect to see much more from him however though, as I feel like he’s still adapting and growing into the squad. His role today while attacking was reminiscent of Pogba last year, as he frequently sought the ball in an advanced position on the left, and used his wonderful eye to bring others into play.

ALEX SANDRO 7.5 – The wingback is hitting a rich vein of form and it’s tough to see Uncle Pat taking many more minutes off him at this rate. He bombed up and down the left flank all game and completely shut it down defensively, too. He was missing that golden touch in the final third, but his passing and positioning was on point all game. He seems to be developing a wonderful chemistry with Pjanic that is just lacking when Asamoah plays there instead.

DYBALA 7 – La Joya is starting to look tired and I think a rest is due. He had a far better game, as a lot of his touches and flicks came off as a result. He brings those around him into play wonderfully, but he looks a little short on confidence in front of goal. His positioning as a result of Alves isn’t quite helping, as he just isn’t finding himself in shooting positions, let alone goal scoring positions.

HIGUAIN 8 – On another night, he could have had a hat trick. Pipita had a brilliant game, where the defense had absolutely no answers for him. His off the ball movement is just joyous to watch, as his incisive running frequently bisects the two centerbacks and their positioning right in two. It looked like it might prove to be a frustrating evening for him, but luckily he was in the right place to tap home our second, and his fourth of the season. Held the ball up and brought the others into play extremely well, and I’m very excited to see more of him.

SUBS

NETO 6 – The Brazilian had to wait close to 15 minutes just to be able to touch the ball with his hands, and that pretty much sums the story up I suppose. He might as well have played charades with the crowd behind him for all the work he had to do.

PJACA 7 – The promising signs are numerous from the young Croat, but he is far from the finished item. It does look like he possesses a special skillset including his wonderful dribbling abilities, speed and strength. He seems to be well composed on the ball too, and showed some lovely vision in his time on the pitch.

MANDZUKIC 6.5 – Did very well to nab the assist for the fourth goal, but arguably should have done much better when presented with the chance to make it 5-0 late on. He seems to have started the season slowly like last year, but considering his main competition is Higuain, who’s on fire, and not the wildly erratic Morata of 2015-16, he could find minutes hard to come by if something doesn’t go his way soon.

COACH

ALLEGRI 7.5 – He said the team had to improve on a technical level, especially with regards to the passing, and it seems like the team understood his words. His rotation policy was also nailed today. It’s very encouraging to see us limit the opposition to zero shots on goal, by means of high pressure and relentless attacking. I have faith in his vision for this team.

SPECIAL RATING

STORARI 9 – It could have easily been 6 or 7 goals for us had it not been for the veteran keeper. He is adored by the Juventini, and with good reason. It was a pleasure to see him at the Juventus Stadium again, and he was extremely unlucky that three of his brilliant saves ended up becoming rebounds for goals.

Concluding Thoughts

  • I hope to see Chiellini rested this weekend, and more minutes for Rugani who looked very impressive today.
  • I’m also hoping to see Dybala rested for either Pjaca or Cuadrado and a formation change this weekend, as he badly needs it.
  • In hindsight, Hernanes at regista might not be the worst idea in Marchisio’s absence — especially considering Lemina looks a far more impressive box-to-box midfielder than Asamoah.
  • It’s still early, but I think based on the positions of the players Wednesday night and their performances, the strongest starting 11 we have on paper is a 4-3-1-2 with a midfield trio of Khedira, Marchisio and Lemina, and Pjanic playing as the TQ. This is almost certainly likely to look like a 4-3-2-1 going forward however, with Dybala dropping deep and drifting to the right, and Pjanic pushing up and drifting to the left.
  • Pjanic as a free-roaming midfielder >> Pjanic as a regista.
