Nope, there were no video game bullying going on. Instead, it was just Higuain bullying Sassuolo’s defense. Higuain, Juventus’ €90 million man, looked every bit as good as the club-record transfer free made him out to be. His two goals within the game’s first 10 minutes — YES, TEN FREAKING MINUTES — were the driving force behind Juventus’ 3-1 win over Sassuolo on Saturday as the Italian champions continued to stay perfect to begin the season. No post-international break letdown. None of that, really. There was no chance to do so simply because with Higuain firing on all cylinders in his first Juventus start. As good as he was off the bench in his first Juventus appearance against Fiorentina in the season opener, it was even better against Sassuolo. The first goal was a beautiful counterattack with a slick leading pass from Paulo Dybala out wide to his fellow Argentine and better finish into the back corner of the goal. His second goal was just a beautiful individual effort to score on the volley following Sami Khedira’s header across the penalty box. Throw in a goal from another player getting his first Juventus start, Miralem Pjanic, before the half-hour mark and the rout was officially on. Not even a rare Sassuolo foray forward in the first half and even rarer error from Gigi Buffon could spoil all of that. Nope, it was a day for the debutants to lead the way. And boy, they sure did. There’s one thing for certain, though: The guy extending those hands on knees is already great. He’s got three goals in three games, and if his first start is any indication of what kind of shape he’s rounding into — I swear that’s not some kind of ‘Higuain is fat’ pun, so shut it — then Juventus’ ceiling and potential got even that much higher. It sure is fun watching Gonzalo Higuain and Miralem Pjanic score goals for Juventus rather than against them. Good job, Beppe, I like that they are both on our team now. That’s €122 million pretty well spent this summer. RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS Mario Lemina in the first half: 32 passes attempted, 32 passes completed. That’s pretty good, I’d say. He’s doing quite a good job stepping in for Claudio Marchisio to start the season, that’s for sure. I say that because as much as Allegri wanted us to think that it was going to be Pjanic playing in front of the defense when he did return from his August injury woes, the truth was that when Saturday’s game against Sassuolo began, it was Lemina playing in the center of the midfield. That’s why we saw Pjanic getting so far up the field so often. And hey, with the way he’s able to create things, that’s not the worst thing in the world. Since I talked about the other two central midfielders for Juve, it’s only fitting that Sami Khedira is the next mention. Alex Sandro’s defending hasn’t been all that great this season, but his crosses were sure quite dangerous as ever. Once he eliminates those errors on the defensive side of things, he’s going to be one of the best left backs the whole world has to offer. Juventus had one point through three games last season. Juventus has nine points through three games this season. I think you can tell that this squad is in a little different kind of shape compared to 12 months ago. This came could have seen Juventus score six. It also could have seen Sassuolo score a couple more goals as well. It proves that while this Juventus team created plenty and is just full of potential, there’s still plenty of things to clean up as we start to enter the first busy stretch of the season. Good thing it’s the second weekend of September. Why is Stephan Lichtsteiner still a crucial part of this team? Just watch his goal line clearance late in the game as the latest example. He’ll get his game time in Serie A this season — especially with Dani Alves being the only natural right back on the Champions League squad list. Dybala didn’t have a goal to his name on Saturday, but he did just about everything else to help Juventus storm past Sassuolo. He created chance after chance for his teammates. He probably should have gotten on the scoresheet based on the chances his did have himself, but that will happen. We know the kind of talent this young man has. Once the first goal comes, he’ll be able to settle in and take off like he did last season. Could and should have scored a goal and made a fantastic goal-line clearance. Superb. 6.5 / 10 Giorgio Chiellini Had a chance to add to Juve’s goal tally but his header was just wide. So important to Juve’s midfield and the club are still unbeaten in Serie A whenever he has started matches. 7.5 / 10 Mario Lemina Exceptional in front of the defenders today, 97% of passes completed (100% in the first half) – Tackled well but it was his range of passing that really impressed, regularly looking to get Juve moving. Excellent 7.0 / 10 Alex Sandro Looked more like his usual self after a poor display in the opening weeks. Good crosses in from the left, often cutting in to try and create. Had a half-chance to score. Improved 6.0 / 10 Gonzalo Higuain What to say? Put Juve ahead with the game barely started and soon scored a second to make the game comfortable. Ran in and around the Sassuolo defence at every opportunity and showed clinical finishing – Man of the Match. 8.0 / 10 Paulo Dybala Played with more freedom than last season, dropping deep to collect the ball, linking up with Pjanic to create chances, providing assists for Higuain….sublime ! 7.5 / 10 Max Allegri Fielded his best Juve XI and the result shows that. New addition Miralem Pjanic was finally making his Juve debut, while Gonzalo Higuain was starting his first game for the Old Lady. Pairing both with Paulo Dybala, they formed ‘The Brilliant Trio.’ The former Roma man’s input was particularly needed after a mediocre and sometimes problematic performance against Lazio, while Sassuolo had proven to be a very tough opponent for the Bianconeri the past two seasons. But not this time. Juve clicked on all cylinders and finished the game after less than half an hour, going up 3-0 with two goals from Higuain and one from Pjanic. Yes, those new guys. Max Allegri’s crew seemed so much in sync with each other, an improvement over the previous two league games. There was no ‘sleepwalk’ this time, Juve’s tendency to fall back into a controlling mode after taking a 1-0 lead. On the contrary, the Bianconeri dominated the game from the first to the last whistle. They kept pushing the tempo, giving Sassuolo no chance to get any momentum by allowing the Neroverdi just 29 per cent of the ball. In every way, Juventus unleashed their inner Michael Jordan. For those who know a bit about the NBA, Jordan’s Chicago Bulls were devastating in the first half of games. They killed off their opponents with a strong run early in the game in order to never look back. And that’s exactly what the Old Lady did to Sassuolo, adopting a mentality that will help them on the Champions League stage. Pjanic was in the middle of it all, alongside the still vastly underrated Sami Khedira. The Bosnian didn’t operate as Juve’s playmaker, as that role was played by Mario Lemina. However, Allegri used him as the team’s mezzala and it worked to perfection. Pjanic and Khedira made timely runs forward, creating space and chaos in the Neroverdi defence and being involved in a series of excellent chances. It was no coincidence that Pjanic and Khedira registered nine of Juve’s 23 shots, as many as the whole Sassuolo team combined. Similar to the games against Fiorentina and Lazio, Dybala often dropped back deep in midfield. However, due to Pjanic’s creative presence it wasn’t an issue this time. The Argentine enjoyed himself in a free role, covering every inch of the pitch and controlling the tempo. Much like Lionel Messi at Barcelona? Well, let’s not jump to conclusions, but Dybala gave the world glimpses of the potential, also due to his stunning unselfishness. Talking about Barcelona is dangerous, but Juve showed they have everything to be similarly dominant on the pitch. Watching Dybala and Pjanic hook up was poetry in motion. With once again a killer striker, arguably the best defence in the world, utility guys all over the place and massive depth, the Old Lady is roaring like never before. And still, there are lessons to be learned. Gigi Buffon misread a corner, allowing Sassuolo to score before the break. Meanwhile Stephan Lichtsteiner saved a shot by Matteo Politano, the Neroverdi’s best player, off the line at the end of the second half. Allegri was right to complain Juve could’ve killed off the match before half-time. It’s important for Juve to keep both feet on the ground and remain focused. While Sassuolo never gave up in their attempts to push forward and threaten Juve's back line, the fluidity of the Old Lady's game, coupled with the intellect of their star players, ensured a powerful performance. Juventus simply dominated for half an hour and scored the goals they needed to allow themselves to enjoy the result of the game and the three points achieved. Positives Juventus have always been described as a cynical and ruthless team that take their opportunities and defend with might. However, this season the Bianconeriare beautiful to watch going forward. Creating an abundance of goal-scoring opportunities, the forwards already understand one another, and vision and creativity is ensuring success going forward. Negatives Defensively, Massimiliano Allegri's side must improve and not rely on the fact that they have a superior squad to most. Despite three consecutive wins and strong performances to boot, the squad have at times lost their concentration to allow for danger, conceding from a corner yet again. While they can depend on a brilliant attack for goals, they must not lose sight of the reason behind their success: a solid defence. Manager rating out of 10 8 -- Allegri finally felt it time to introduce Miralem Pjanic and Gonzalo Higuain from the start and the duo repaid him, scoring the goals to secure victory. Offering Pjanic the freedom required to contribute successfully to the attack, the manager did well to extol the virtues of his technical side to ensure 70 percent possession. Most impressive were Allegri's postmatch comments, in which he warned of the dangers of being overly confident and reminded his men to remain humble and maintain. Player ratings (1-10; 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating): GK Gianluigi Buffon, 6 -- Did well when Matteo Politano shot, but committed the error that led to Sassuolo's goal. However, he recovered well and played with confidence for the rest of the game. DF Stephan Lichtsteiner, 7 -- A superb performance from the man who never gives up, making a vital goal-line clearance to solidify the score line at the end. Only Paulo Dybala created more chances for the side. DF Mehdi Benatia, 6 -- Safe, secure and reliable, the player looks at home with his new club. DF Leonardo Bonucci, 7 -- It's important to have the defensive leader back in the squad. Confident and sturdy, he offered the back line a sense of calm as he deflected danger away and pushed the team forward when presented with the opportunity. DF Giorgio Chiellini, 6 -- Still not at his best, yet he always makes the difference. His tenacity and relentless desire to ensure solidity at the back make him vital to the squad. DF Alex Sandro, 6 -- Relentless on the pitch, he drove the team forward from the left flank and did his utmost to win back possession. Could still do with being a little more composed to avoid silly errors. MF Sami Khedira, 7 -- His greatest quality lies in his ability to read the game. Tactically intelligent, he knows when to make the right runs forward to create danger. Provided the assist for the second goal. MF Mario Lemina, 6 -- His game is improving as he comes to grips with the side's style of play. More composed, he kept the ball moving and shielded the back line. MF Miralem Pjanic, 7 -- Offered the side the creativity they have yearned for by combining well with the forwards and scoring the goal to mark an excellent debut. FW Paulo Dybala, 7 -- Has to be labelled as one of the best investments ever made by the club. The Argentine was central to every attack, driving the team forward and providing the passes and assist to ensure maximum points. Could be a little more selfish. FW Gonzalo Higuain, 8 -- Two goals, two tremendous finishes. The striker was lethal and demonstrated exactly why he is the missing piece in a perfect jigsaw puzzle. Combined well with Dybala and seems to have already integrated well within the Bianconeri pattern of play. Substitutes FW Mario Mandzukic, 6 -- Came on and almost scored. Defends from the top and always works for the team. MF Hernanes, N/A -- Kept the team moving upon his entrance into the fold. The team led by the man whose name is as stylish as his look, Eusebio Di Francesco, travelled to the Juventus stadium hoping to shake off an embarrassing administrative gaffe and get back to winning ways. Given Stephan Lichtsteiner’s much-discussed absence from the Champions League squad, Allegri made the obvious change of resting Dani Alves and playing the Swiss – this is a change we can basically expect to see every Serie A game that precedes a UCL group-stage game. Medhi Benatia replaced Andrea Barzagli in defense, Kwadwo Asamoah was rested as Miralem Pjanic made his debut in Juve colors, and Mario Mandzukic made way for the golden boy, Gonzalo Higuaín, to complete the changes from the last league game. The game started in very frantic fashion. The first few minutes saw many fouls, few passing moves, and little rhythm to the game. Gianluigi Buffon was forced into an early one-handed save to prevent Matteo Politano’s low drive from creeping into the net. Sassuolo maintained some remarkably high pressure without the ball and it seemed to be working well. Out of the blue, though, came the first goal. A Sassuolo corner broke down and Juventus began a rapid counter attack. Pjanic deftly skipped past a challenge, leaving the defender on his backside, and threaded the ball to Paulo Dybala. La Joya needed little more invitation as he glided forward before spotting his compatriot Higuaín making a bursting run on the inside-right channel, who needed only a simple through ball and a few touches before rifling the ball into the far corner of the goal. The second goal also came courtesy of our record signing as he acrobatically volleyed a headed ball by Sami Khedira into the back of the net from 12 meters out. The storming start to the game would not end soon as Leonardo Bonucci came close with a header from a corner, but Pjanic quickly showed the Italian how it was done as he brilliantly headed Lichtsteiner’s cross onto the crossbar but reacted first to bury the rebound. A three-goal lead in a mere 30 minutes! But just when we thought we had seen it all, we witnessed a hyper-rare Buffon mishap as he flapped at a cross from a corner. Alex Sandro banged his clearance against Luca Antei and just like that, Sassuolo had pulled back a goal. The Bianconeri consolidated the rest of the half and went into the break with a 3-1 lead. The second half was played at a different pace but with the same result: Bianconeri dominance. Khedira and Pjanic kept Andrea Consigli busy with a few driving shots as Sassuolo struggled to maintain the early-game defensive pressure. The (new?) BBC had the time to patiently build up play from the back as Allegri probably told the lads to not drop off the pressure and allow Sassuolo back into the game in the second half. This largely worked and Buffon had essentially nothing to do after the break, save for one freakish moment where Politano (again!) rounded the keeper but saw his effort heroically cleared off the line by Lichtsteiner to prevent an unnecessarily nervous final 5 minutes of the game. Mission accomplished: Three games, three victories. six goals scored, two conceded. Not bad at all! Pagelle BUFFON 5.5. As usual, the legendary goalkeeper had little to do, but, unfortunately, had one crucial mistake for Sassuolo’s goal. He’ll want to forget his uncharacteristic mishap for Antei’s goal very quickly. CHIELLINI 6.5. Thankfully put his nightmare performances for Italy behind him and returned to the usual, reliable destroyer at the back. BONUCCI 6.5. Didn’t give Matri an inch of space and barely put a foot wrong. BENATIA 6. Continues to impress and show intelligent anticipation to stop opposition attacks. The yellow card was unfortunate though. LICHTSTEINER 7. LEMINA 7. Our stand-in regista continues to impress. Didn’t make many mistakes, but the few he did make he quickly corrected. He’s very tidy in possession and distributes the ball laterally very confidently. PJANIC 7.5. Extremely busy performance and debut by the Bosnian. His passing was short, quick, and effective. Sharp reactions to pounce on the rebound for his first goal in Bianconeri colors. He is, quite literally, all over the place though predominantly on the left STATSZONE app, powered by OPTA KHEDIRA 6.5. Quiet but assured performance. Played a role in Higuaín’s acrobatic 2nd goal. ALEX SANDRO 6.5. Good all-round performance. He seemed more active offensively than defensively, but did both at a good level. DYBALA 7.5. Creative, busy, and intelligent. Linked up nicely with his compatriot for the first goal and had a few lovely dribbles by drifting out wide a few times. HIGUAÍN 8. He had all the fun in the world against Sassuolo and showed his enjoyment through 2 very well-taken goals. A fantastically clinical performance as life in Juventus colors continues to blossom for the Argentine hitman. ALLEGRI. 7.5 Very good game management by Il Mister here. Instructed the boys to start intensely early on and more controlled late on. The midfield looked very balanced and there seemed to be real purpose in the play. Subs Mandzukic 6.5. Had a snap-shot that tested Consigli well and looked busy. Hernanes 6. Didn’t do anything (blatantly) wrong. PJACA N/A Tactical observations: Whenever, wherever, whatever Although much of the excitement was about seeing Higuaín start his first game in Juventus colors, there was an even greater buzz surrounding Pjanic’s first appearance for La Vecchia Signora. Being the nerd that I am, my eyes were on the tactical aspect of the game and thus I noted a few observations concerning his role and positioning in the side. Firstly, it seemed that when Juventus was building possession early on in the build-up, he adopted a deep, double-pivot position alongside Lemina. Pjanic to the left, Lemina to the right. Pardon the poor image quality, the stream wasn’t fantastic. Pjanic again to the left, Lemina to the right However, once the first phase of the buildup was complete, the Bosnian moved aggressively high up the pitch to join the Argentine striking duo as we see below. Pjanic breaking forward into attack So he essentially played two roles: facilitator from deep and creator from high up the pitch. In light of this, I’m surprised Allegri let him complete the full 90 minutes, but then again, he is just returning from injury so this could just be an attempt to build match-fitness. He played the roles wonderfully, though, elegantly combining patient distribution with penetrating vertical passes. Speaking of players fulfilling multiple roles, La Joya Dybala was running riot all over the place. He was intelligently positioning himself wide and overloading the wings with Lichtsteiner and Alex Sandro. This forced one of the Sassuolo central midfielders to come out wide to provide cover or the winger to directly challenge him. This facilitated ball circulation from one side to the other through midfield and, when one of the opposition wingers had to come defend, freed up one of Benatia or Chiellini off the ball. Dybala in red, marked by (I believe) Ragusa This time followed by Duncan And here he is, all the way on the left now but not very heavily pressured. A Madman’s Musings Overall, a remarkably energetic display in the first half combined with a more controlled style in the second half. The victory was never really in doubt even though Sassuolo did manage to provide a few late sights on goal to remind us that they were going to go down with honor. What surprised me most was the directness of the play in attack, especially early on. We wanted to get the ball from back to front as quickly as possible. Bonucci didn’t do too much distributive work because Pjanic and Dybala were relentlessly driving the squad forward. An interesting change in intention and purpose from the team, a change that must be accredited to our favorite Madman Max Allegri. Let’s see how we deal with Sevilla on Wednesday! While there was no shame in being outclassed by Pep Guardiola's slick Bavarian machine, there is no denying that Sacchi is ultimately correct. Juventus have historically underperformed outside of Serie A. As Italy’s most successful club, La Vecchia Signora has had more opportunities than most to claim the continent's most prestigious honour, yet 34 domestic titles have yielded only two European Cup victories, the same as Nottingham Forest and Porto. That is hardly the most illustrious company, but does she truly fail to deliver on the international stage, or is it simply a matter of perspective? What certainly weighs heavily for the club and her fans is the unconvincing manner of those two aforementioned victories, with the 1985 win particularly contentious. Were just two of those results reversed, the club's place in the pantheon of European champions would be viewed in a vastly different light. It must also be noted that the Bianconeri are also three-time winners of the UEFA Cup – more than any other team – and are the only club in the world to have won all continental club competitions and the World Club Championship. As Barça – who had only won the European Cup once before 2005, yet are now rightly regarded as one of Europe’s best and most prestigious clubs – have proven, it only takes a brief period of success to change the perception of a wider audience. Having reached the Final against the Catalan side two seasons ago, Juventus have made no secret of their desire to claim ultimate glory this term and – while Sacchi was right in saying their famous black and white shirts loom largest at home – La Madama is still feared and respected across Europe. Fans, players, owners and staff all yearn for success and recognition on the Champions League stage, two things that go hand in hand with "the cup with big ears." It appears she has gambled heavily on doing so this summer, betting that the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain and Miralem Pjanic will be enough to clinch a much-sought third victory on the grandest stage of all. The group stage competition gets back underway this evening, with the Bianconeri taking on Sevilla tomorrow. “It’s a very heavy responsibility, especially for Juve who have gone a long time without winning the Champions League,” Trezeguet noted in an interview with Tiki Taka. “The Coach [Massimiliano Allegri] is doing a very important job, and there are players who want to make history. “They’ve done extraordinary things in Italy, but I think Juve can’t hide from this clear objective, because of the investments made, the players who have arrived and the fans. “Juve have to be a protagonist in this competition, I hope until the end. In the Champions League there are the best players and the best teams in Europe, but because of Juve’s history they must aim for this objective, and that’s why the club decided to make important investments. “Like Gonzalo Higuain? Higuain is a winner, a player of the highest level and now the time has come to focus on the Champions League. “It’s a trophy that has been missing for too long. Juve are among the favourites, you can’t hide that.” The Old Lady struggled in Europe under Antonio Conte, but appear to be more of a force under Allegri, why is that? “Conte worked a lot when he arrived, especially on the mental aspect of the players - he knew what it meant to play for Juventus and he was a winner. “Allegri has given continuity to Conte’s work, he wants to leave his mark and I think it was the right choice to take him after Conte. They’re two talented Coaches.” Trezeguet scored 171 goals for Juventus, and was asked if real number 9s are making a comeback in Serie A. “For strikers, it’s important to be mad about scoring and always being a protagonist,” the Frenchman noted. “In Italy these type of players are coming back, great strikers are coming back to a tough League like Serie A. “Who inspired me? The Italian giants have made a perfect start to the new season and confidence is high heading into their opening Group H clash against Sevilla in Turin despite coach Massimiliano Allegri's insistence they can still improve. Allegri pronounced himself far from satisfied despite a comfortable win over Sassuolo on Saturday, in which in-form Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain scored two goals inside the first 10 minutes. Dybala told Sky Italia: "With Higuain so motivated to score goals, it is so much easier. We have great forwards who can hurt Sevilla. The excitement continued on Saturday when Sampaoli's men scored two goals in the last minute to beat Las Palmas 2-1 and maintain their unbeaten record, and club president Jose Castro remains convinced by what he has seen so far. Sampaoli's attacking attitude has clearly rubbed off on Castro who is determined to throw caution to the wind as his three-time Europa League winners embark on another Champions League campaign.
