SPAL postpone the Juventus party

Moise Kean was on target for the fourth Serie A game on the bounce, but SPAL fought back for a 2-1 victory to postpone the Juventus Scudetto party.

The Bianconeri needed just one point to be sure of their eighth consecutive Scudetto, with a record six rounds to spare, so with the Champions League quarter-final against Ajax coming up on Tuesday, Max Allegri rested numerous stars. Juan Cuadrado and Andrea Barzagli made their comebacks after long injury lay-offs, with 17-year-old defender Paolo Gozzi getting his Serie A debut. SPAL were hovering above the relegation zone, but Jasmin Kurtic was not fit enough to start, so Pasquale Schiattarella stepped in.

Alessandro Murgia’s overhead kick didn’t quite work out and Paulo Dybala had a shot charged down, but SPAL started to take control of proceedings.

Mohamed Fares and Andrea Petagna had efforts deflected during the same sweeping right-to-left move, while on the resulting corner Barzagli’s defending prevented Petagna nodding in from six yards.

Juventus took the lead somewhat against the run of play, as Joao Cancelo cut inside from the right and his daisy-cutter was going wide, but Kean found himself in the vicinity and stuck out a foot to redirect from 12 yards, wrong-footing Emiliano Viviano. It was the 19-year-old Italy international’s fourth consecutive Serie A match on target, his sixth in a row between club and country. He also became the youngest player to score in four Serie A games on the bounce in the three points for a win era.

Another Dybala curler from the edge of the box was charged down, while Sergio Floccari couldn’t steer his header on target.

SPAL came out fighting for the second half and Kevin Bonifazi’s downward header from a corner at the near post put them on level terms.

The hosts continued to pour forward, notching up a series of corners and pinning Juve back into their own half. Murgia’s header was too weak and straight at Mattia Perin on a floated Lazzari cross, but Hans Nicolussi-Caviglia stung Viviano’s gloves from distance.

However, SPAL turned the game around completely when Murgia used his chest to intercept a pass on the edge of the area, rolled across for Floccari and the veteran striker swept into the far bottom corner from 12 yards. It was his first Serie A goal of the season.

This result would postpone the Scudetto party, so Juve threw on Federico Bernardeschi and poured forward, but deep into stoppages his free kick was nodded wide by Mattia De Sciglio.

These are three precious points to keep SPAL away from the drop zone and they become only the second Serie A team to beat Juventus this season.

It is still possible Juventus could win the Scudetto this weekend if Napoli fail to beat bottom of the table Chievo.

Spal: Viviano; Vicari, Cionek, Bonifazi; Lazzari, Missiroli, Schiattarella (Valdifiori 70), Murgia, Fares; Petagna (Antenucci 88), Floccari (Regini 84)

Allegri: 'Evaluating strikers for Ajax'

Apr 13, 2019

Max Allegri is not concerned by the 2-1 Juventus defeat to SPAL, but hints Moise Kean and Paulo Dybala are in contention to start against Ajax.

The Bianconeri needed only a point today in order to mathematically secure their eighth consecutive Scudetto, but after Kean had opened the scoring, Kevin Bonifazi and Sergio Floccari turned it around.

“We had a lot of young players and they did well, but above all the second goal showed a lack of experience,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We reacted well in the second half, but couldn’t get the game back on track. Paolo Gozzi had a good game, including after Andrea Barzagli went off. Grigoris Kastanos was struggling a little in the role of mezz’ala, while Hans Nicolussi and Stephy Mavididi did well.

“I needed to see the conditions of Juan Cuadrado, who is unfortunately off the Champions League squad list, and also Dybala, whose fitness levels weren’t at their best. The more he plays, the better shape he gets into. He rediscovered some enthusiasm today and it wasn’t easy for him psychologically of late to have only 20 minutes or so and then get hurt again.

“At a big club, you must fight every day to earn your space in the team and I am very happy with what he did today. It’s a good sign for Tuesday, as we must be ready and prepare for the potential of extra time too.”

It was the sixth consecutive game for club and country on target for 19-year-old Kean, so was the fact he was substituted early be considered a clue ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final with Ajax.

“Kean was feeling a little tired, so I preferred to take him off. When he starts moving wide and doesn’t attack the goal as much, it means it’s time to get him off the field.

“He has different characteristics to Mario Mandzukic, but obviously having him in this shape is important and I’ll evaluate what to do on Tuesday.

“Dybala moved well and had a good game, so there are certainly positive responses going towards Tuesday. Blaise Matuidi is certainly available, as he just had cramp. Douglas Costa we’ll see, they tell me Emre Can is doing far better, while we’ll test Giorgio Chiellini in training tomorrow morning.

“Chiellini was fine after Cagliari, despite getting a knock, but his calf muscles do cause problems every now and then, so we have to be careful.”

Juventus could still win the Scudetto this weekend, if Napoli fail to beat bottom of the table Chievo at the Bentegodi tomorrow.

“It would’ve been easy to field the first choice XI today and get the Scudetto, but we’ve had such a remarkable run of results this season that it was more important to focus on the Champions League game coming up.

“The key to Juventus winning the Scudetto is that we do well in the head-to-head clashes, but above all bring home the points everywhere else.

“You usually win the Scudetto with 84-86 points, but last term Napoli had 91 – a club record – and still finished second, so our performance that season was extraordinary.”

Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong is in doubt for Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final against Juventus after limping off with a hamstring problem.

The future Barcelona star lasted just 24 minutes in today’s Eredivisie game against Excelsior.

He was spotted leaving the field clutching the back of his left thigh.

The 21-year-old was one of Ajax’s best performers in the 1-1 first leg draw in Amsterdam.

The decider will be in Turin on Tuesday evening, with a place in the Champions League semi-final at stake.

Ajax will already be without suspended Nicolas Tagliafico.

Mattia Perin is out of the Juventus squad to face Ajax, while Giorgio Chiellini and Emre Can are progressing well.

The first leg of the Champions League quarter-final ended 1-1 and the decider is in Turin on Tuesday evening.

Goalkeeper Perin suffered a right shoulder injury in this morning’s training session and has been ruled out of that game.

Chiellini and Emre Can missed the first leg due to injuries, but are both said to be progressing well and there is the sense that they could at least be in the squad.

However, Douglas Costa is continuing to struggle and is not expected to make it against Ajax.

Juan Cuadrado made his comeback in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to SPAL, but is not in the Champions League squad list.

French referee Clement Turpin will officiate the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final between Juventus and Ajax.

It kicks off on Tuesday at the Juventus Stadium at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT) after a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam.

Turpin will be assisted by Nicolas Danos and Cyril Gringore, with Nicolas Rainville and Francois Letexier in the VAR booth.

Benoit Bastien is the fourth official.

He already officiated the contentious 3-3 draw between Ajax and Bayern Munich in the group stage, showing straight red cards to Maximilian Wober and Thomas Muller.

The Frenchman was also in charge when Ajax beat Dynamo Kiev 3-1 in the Champions League preliminary round in August.

This season, Turpin also oversaw Inter’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur and Roma’s 2-0 home defeat to Real Madrid.

His only previous game with Juventus was a 1-1 draw away to Sporting CP in October 2017.

Frenkie de Jong is in Ajax’s squad to face Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday, but Nicolas Tagliafico misses out through suspension.

De Jong lasted just 24 minutes of Ajax’s 6-2 victory over Excelsior on Saturday with a hamstring scare, but the midfielder is passed fit to play in Turin.

Tagliafico has also travelled with the squad, although the left-back is ineligible due to a yellow-card ban.

The second leg of the quarter-final takes place in Turin after last week’s 1-1 draw in the Netherlands.

Ajax squad to face Juve: Onana, Lamprou, Varela; Kristensen, Veltman, De Ligt, Sinkgraven, Mazraoui, Magallan, Blind, Tagliafico; Van de Beek, Tadic, Labyad, Schone, De Jong, Ziyech, De Wit; Neres, Huntelaar, Dolberg, Ekkelenkamp

Allegri: 'Kean or Dybala or neither!'

https://www.football-italia.net/137025/allegri-kean-or-dybala-or-neither

Apr 15, 2019

Max Allegri floated several options for Juventus against Ajax in Mario Mandzukic’s absence, starting “Moise Kean or Paulo Dybala or neither of them.”

The first leg of the Champions League quarter-final ended 1-1 in Amsterdam and the decider is at the Allianz Juventus Stadium on Tuesday at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

Giorgio Chiellini and Mandzukic are out of the squad, along with Martin Caceres and Juan Cuadrado.

“Mandzukic changes nothing, as there was already a good chance he could miss out. Now I just need to decide who plays instead,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Tomorrow night could have Kean from the start, Dybala from the start or neither of them. If Kean or Dybala start, it’s normal that either De Sciglio or Cancelo will be out. If neither of them start, then it’s possible both of them do.

“I won’t make any decisions until tomorrow morning. You need to use only healthy players, as you can’t risk wasting a substitution. Mandzukic has a knee problem he felt since the Milan game, he tried training today and had to stop.

“Douglas Costa stopped again with a calf issue after the first leg and is again not in the best condition, so at most he can play 15-30 minutes. He can be decisive in that period.

“If you have Kean or Dybala, it’s a different type of match. You need to move the ball forward quickly and that’s something we didn’t do very well in Amsterdam.

“Alex Sandro will play tomorrow. Leonardo Spinazzola did very well against Atletico Madrid, but he used up so much energy that he needed rest, both physically and mentally. You need to become accustomed to big games, you can’t play them every three days without slowly adapting to it.”

Ajax confirmed Frenkie de Jong is in doubt until the last minute with a muscular problem, while Nicolas Tagliafico is suspended.

“De Jong is a very good player. If he plays, it won’t make any difference to us. Our objective is to win the match and qualify for the semi-final, with all due respect whether De Jong plays or not.”

The first leg ended 1-1, so Juve could draw 0-0 and qualify, a different approach to the fightback from 2-0 down to beat Atletico Madrid.

“The first leg result is irrelevant. We must play with the same intensity we did against Atletico Madrid. We must have great respect for Ajax and also move the ball with much greater precision than we did in Amsterdam. If we do those two things, we can go through.

“The game will always be open, because we’ll both play to win until the bitter end, so it won’t be over until the final whistle.

“It’ll be an important night for an extraordinary target, reaching the semi-final, so we need the fans to push the lads on to achieve it. There will be times when we need to defend and we have to do it all together.”

Ajax lost the first leg at home 2-1 in the Round of 16, yet hammered Champions League holders Real Madrid 4-1 at the Bernabeu.

“I was convinced there would be goals in the first leg and I think the second leg will be very similar. We need to focus on the details in defence.

“Ajax played better in Madrid than they did in Amsterdam. We must do well attacking, be focused in midfield and when defending. It’ll be very open, we need above all a great performance, one that is physical and technical.

“We could’ve and should’ve done better in Amsterdam.”

With Chiellini and Mandzukic out, could Cristiano Ronaldo be the captain?

“Cristiano has this extraordinary quality, which is that when the game time comes, he changes. You can see it in his face. He’s in better shape physically than he was last week.

“As for the captaincy, if Dybala plays, he’ll be captain, otherwise Leonardo Bonucci.”

Emre Can: 'Not afraid of Ajax'

Emre Can praised Juventus Coach Max Allegri and assured they “respect Ajax, but are not afraid of them and want to win” the Champions League.

The first leg ended 1-1 in Amsterdam and the decider is at the Allianz Juventus Stadium on Tuesday at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“I feel good, I recovered from the injury and I am ready for tomorrow,” said the midfielder in his Press conference.

He missed the first leg due to a sprained ankle, but could he go back to playing as an adjunct to the defence, as he did against Atletico Madrid?

“I don’t know if I will play in the same position or in another. I wouldn’t tell you the day before the game, even if I did!”

The Bianconeri have not won the Champions League since 1998 and Emre Can is well aware of their expectations.

“I know since I came here that it’s very important for Juventus and the people in Turin to win the Cup. They came close before, lost two Finals and want to reach another.

“It won’t be easy, as everyone respects Ajax. We respect them in the Champions League, but we are not afraid of them and we want to win tomorrow.

“I watched the first leg on television and it’s impressive to see how they play, but we want to play our game and then see what happens.

“We need the same attitude that we had against Atletico Madrid. We are for sure not playing for 0-0 and think we’ll be through. We want to win the game and score goals.

“Allegri is a fantastic Coach, you can see he won the Scudetto every year and reached the Champions League Final twice. He likes to work on the details and that is why he’s a world class Coach.

Emre Can was asked if he and the Juventus players had practiced penalties ahead of a potential shoot-out.

“I think I was to date the only player who had a few penalties after training, but then I do that anyway. We haven’t tried that yet with the team.”

Italian police have ejected 54 Ajax supporters ahead of the Champions League quarter-final with Juventus, as they were found with weapons.

A statement from the authorities confirmed the 54 fans had been stopped and searched, found to have weapons, fireworks and smokebombs.

They will be accompanied to the border and expelled tomorrow morning.

There was crowd trouble ahead of the first leg in Amsterdam, as groups of Ajax supporters hurled objects at local police, who responded with riot gear and tear gas.

The first leg ended 1-1 in Amsterdam and the decider is at the Allianz Juventus Stadium on Tuesday at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

De Jong is in doubt after limping off against Excelsior with a muscular problem, while Nicolas Tagliafico is suspended in defence.

“We have a few options. Mazraoui on the left is an alternative, while Blind and Sinkgraven can also play there. We’ll see,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We don’t know about De Jong, as it happened on Saturday, we’ll take it one day at a time and one hour at a time. We certainly won’t push him in training.

“The player has to decide. We cannot look inside his own body. If there is too big a risk, then we won’t push it. The player must decide, Frenkie is always a very positive guy. We’re positive about him playing, but we’ll have to wait and see.

“Tagliafico wanted to come along with the team, even though he’s suspended, and it was a good idea. It tells you about the spirit of this team. He can motivate the others and is an important player both on and off the field.”

Ronaldo scored in Amsterdam, so will Ajax adjust to place a man-marker on the Champions League record-breaker?

“ We won’t put a man-marker on Cristiano Ronaldo, that’s something we never do. Juventus are the favourites, especially after the 1-1 draw in Amsterdam. We have to score here, we need to surpass our limits again, we know all that. We also showed that we can do it if we play well.

“Juventus are different to Real Madrid, we already discussed that before the first leg, as they have a different culture of football.

“Last week, we controlled the game, but were unable to score more than one goal. I expect Massimiliano Allegri to make some changes and defend deeper, but we must do better and surpass our limits.

“Staying in Europe after the group stage and then knocking out Real Madrid was wonderful, but we want another unforgettable match tomorrow. We’ve got more confidence, a better mentality and the team always comes first.

“A team requires no extra motivation in a game like this. It’ll be tense and we need to be very concentrated.”

Mario Mandzukic and Giorgio Chiellini are out of the Juventus squad to face Ajax in tomorrow’s Champions League quarter-final, so Moise Kean is likely to start.

The first leg ended 1-1 in Amsterdam and the decider is at the Allianz Juventus Stadium on Tuesday at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

Mandzukic has not looked like his usual self lately and Max Allegri confirmed in an interview with Sky Sport Italia this evening that he could not continue to play through the pain of a knee tendon problem.

As expected, Chiellini has not recovered from a calf strain either, so he is not in the squad, while Martin Caceres also misses out.

Juventus squad for Ajax: Szczesny, Pinsoglio, Loria; De Sciglio, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Bonucci, Cancelo, Rugani, Spinazzola; Pjanic, Khedira, Matuidi, Emre Can, Bentancur, Nicolussi Caviglia; Ronaldo, Dybala, Douglas Costa, Bernardeschi

Emre Can fears allayed

Emre Can should start Juventus’ Champions League quarter-final against Ajax on Tuesday, despite fears he had been left out of the squad.

Sport Mediaset initially reported that the Juve squad left their Vinovo training complex for Allianz Stadium without Can on their team bus to finish their preparation for the second leg.

However, the likes of Romeo Agresti and Gianni Balzarini – a journalist for the broadcaster – have since followed up that he only stayed behind to undergo personalised conditioning.

Consequently he is expected to join up with the rest of the squad later, before taking his place in central midfield.

CL: Ajax out-play and eliminate Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo was not enough this time, as Ajax comprehensively out-played Juventus for a 2-1 win to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

The first leg ended 1-1, so was hanging in the balance, but both teams were forced into changes. Giorgio Chiellini was still injured, joined by Mario Mandzukic, Douglas Costa, Mattia Perin and Martin Caceres, so Paulo Dybala became centre-forward and captain, with Mattia De Sciglio rather than Joao Cancelo. Nicolas Tagliafico was suspended for the Dutch masters, replaced by Noussair Mazraoui returning from his ban, while Frenkie de Jong was able to start despite a hamstring problem.

Emre Can charged down the Andre Onana clearance and it ricocheted wide of the open goal, but Mazraoui – who was only playing on the left because of Tagliafico’s ban – turned his ankle badly and was replaced by Daley Sinkgraven.

Van de Beek prodded over under pressure from close range, while Dybala’s strike on the volley was plucked out of the air.

Juve broke through on a corner with Ronaldo’s header, although there was a VAR check for a push, but replays showed it was Matthijs de Ligt who had shoved his own teammate. This was Ronaldo’s ninth goal in the last six Champions League meetings with Ajax, not to mention his eighth consecutive quarter-final on target.

Ronaldo blasted over from a tight angle, but Ajax equalised both on the night and on aggregate when Hakim Ziyech’s wayward strike turned into an assist for Donny van de Beek to redirect in front of Wojciech Szczesny. The offside trap failed, as Federico Bernardeschi had been lagging back near the corner flag.

Cristiano Ronaldo blasted a free kick into the wall in first half stoppages and Dybala seemed to be limping. La Joya made way for Moise Kean, the 19-year-old on spectacular form for club and country.

Wojciech Szczesny needed a stunning save to deny Ziyech, as the shot was going into the near top corner when the goalkeeper stood his ground, stuck up a trailing arm and with one strong hand stopped the ball dead.

Szczesny was decisive again with a flying fingertip save to tip van de Beek’s curler out of the far top corner, while at the other end Kean drilled wide on a Ronaldo assist.

Ajax were stepping up the tempo and causing huge problems. Tadic was in acres of space and tried to roll across for a Ziyech tap-in, but Miralem Pjanic read it perfectly to intercept the decisive pass.

Ziyech then also tried to over-complicate things by pulling back for van de Beek when he could’ve gone for goal, again allowing a block.

However, Ajax took a deserved lead from a corner when Matthijs de Ligt out-jumped both Alex Sandro and Daniele Rugani to nod in the Lasse Schone set play.

This also meant we could not have extra time and Juventus needed two goals to turn this around, as Ajax had the extra away goal.

Kean nodded a Joao Cancelo cross wide, but when Cancelo gave the ball away and Ziyech curled a right-foot stunner into the far top corner at the 80th minute, there was an offside in the build-up to disallow.

In the final minute, Juventus had penalty appeals for handball, but the referee did not even have an on-field review.

Agnelli: 'Juventus project continues'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor agnelli e allegri

Apr 16, 2019

President Andrea Agnelli acknowledged Ajax “fully deserved to qualify” for the Champions League semi-finals, but the Juventus project continues.

The Bianconeri were eliminated in the quarter-final with a 2-1 home defeat, after the 1-1 first leg in Amsterdam.

“My job is to be there in certain moments and make general evaluations,” the President told Sky Sport Italia, as he was the first Juve representative to speak with the media.

“Ajax fully deserved to qualify, but at the same time we are aware that for the last five or six years we’ve been a stable presence in the Champions League quarter-finals and so want to keep that progress going, year after year, year after year.

“Ajax are a club who work on cycles and this is one that started a couple of years ago. They deserved it, not just over the one match, but throughout the two legs. Of course, this is a competition where a good half-hour can make the difference between a trophy and elimination.

“We’re about to win the eighth consecutive Scudetto and that is extraordinary. Juventus were 43rd in the UEFA rankings and are now fifth, so we have to evaluate the whole situation.”

The tie was in the balance, but Juve seemed to crumble in the second half in Turin.

“Ajax caused huge problems for Bayern Munich, eliminated Real Madrid and Juventus. We must tip our hats to them.

“As a fan, of course there is disappointment in defeat, but sometimes you have to accept the opposition have been extraordinary all season and we should all have the culture to compliment the opposition.

“They are reminiscent of Monaco a couple of years ago. This is the nature of Ajax, we’ll have to see what happens in a couple of years, if these lads will remain with the club or go elsewhere.

“These are young players who are honouring the jersey of a club that has a huge weight on the continental stage and in the history of European football.

“We’ll see how the second leg goes between Manchester City and Tottenham, so either way we’ll have a fantastic semi-final. Ajax did not start out as favourites, but they are now one of the genuine contenders to take the trophy.

“It’s true, Juve started the tie with the odds in their favour and more experience, but this is football.”

It had been suggested this season would be a failure if Juventus didn’t win the Champions League, but Agnelli always pushed back against that narrative.

“We’ve said since the summer that the Champions League is an objective and will be every year. This was a relatively young starting XI tonight, so it can grow with Allegri on the bench – we’ll sit down at the end of the season to discuss the contract, as we said six weeks ago – and we have a club that guarantees the future and continuity of a prosperous future for Juventus.”

Allegri: 'I will stay at Juventus'

Apr 16, 2019

Max Allegri confirmed he will stay at Juventus despite the Champions League quarter-final exit to Ajax. “We conceded a fortuitous goal and the fear set in.”

Cristiano Ronaldo had given Juve the lead after the 1-1 first leg result in Amsterdam, but Donny van de Beek equalised before half-time and then Matthijs de Ligt got the decisive second away goal.

“We had done well in the first half, albeit a little too frenetic when we won back possession. Football is vicious, as you concede a fortuitous goal, the fear sets in, we got stretched out in the second half and should’ve had a different approach.

“Ajax fully deserved their result and qualification to the semi-finals,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

Mario Mandzukic, Giorgio Chiellini, Douglas Costa, Mattia Perin and Martin Caceres were injured, while Paulo Dybala limped off at half-time.

“When you reach the quarter-finals, it’s better to have as many options as possible, because these ties are decided by details, substitutions and options off the bench.

“We had a lot of players struggling with fitness issues and the two legs were only a week apart. We had a young player like Kean in the second half, but there’s a knock-on effect, as it allowed De Jong more time on the ball and Ajax took control.

“There are many young players in the squad who need to play and gain experience.  Some might’ve paid at having two such big matches in the space of a week.

“We did well in the first half, less well after the break. The first leg was more balanced than this evening, of course.

“I was convinced we’d have a different second half, but that wasn’t the case. We have to tip our hats to Ajax and give them credit for an extraordinary second half performance.

“Let’s not forget, this team was in the Europa League Final a couple of years ago. Our problem was we split open and didn’t have the patience to play our game, considering the options we still had to come off the bench.”

The equaliser seemed to be the turning point, as Donny van de Beek sprung the offside trap to redirect a wayward Hakim Ziyech shot.

“The defence had to be lined up. Even if Bernardeschi had sprinted back, he still wouldn’t have been in time to make that offside.”

Allegri was asked if some of his players felt Ronaldo would resolve everything?

“No, absolutely not. Ronaldo has given us a lot over the course of the campaign, but when you reach the quarter-final, you need every player.

“I’ve always said that to win the Champions League, you need to reach a certain stage in good form and with good fitness levels. We’ve been in a bit of an emergency situation for a while and that can only be sustained for so long.

“We were missing four or five players tonight. Daniele Rugani and Leonardo Bonucci had good games for 50 minutes or so, but we lost our unity and organisation, giving Ajax the advantage.”

The decisive goal proved to be a De Ligt relatively free header from a corner.

“De Ligt was meant to be man-marked, but he got away. Details make the difference. On the three goals we conceded to Ajax, unfortunately two and a half counted as our gifts.

“Ajax absolutely deserved to win and qualify in the second half. Juventus cannot give away goals like this in a quarter-final. We should’ve paid more attention and been more careful.

“We were too hasty to move it forward once we won back possession, whereas we should’ve moved Ajax around better. It was a good first half, but Ajax become devastating when allowed spaces to run into and we lost our shape.”

Allegri was asked about his future and confirmed the decision has already been made.

“I met the President a couple of days ago and told him that I will stay at Juventus. We’ll sit down with the club and think about the future.”

Ten Hag: 'Ajax tough to play against'

Erik ten Hag explained Ajax are “very difficult to play against and only we know how to perform that variable pressing” after knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus.

The first leg ended 1-1 in Amsterdam, but just like the turnaround to eliminate Real Madrid in the Round of 16, the Dutch masters secured another precious away victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s opener was cancelled out by Donny van de Beek and then Matthijs de Ligt nodded in the winner.

“I think it was an incredible night for Ajax, the players and all of Dutch football,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We have again knocked out one of the Champions League favourites, as with our philosophy, we can go beyond our limitations and we’ve done it again.

“You could see that Juve were a little scared of us and so were Real Madrid. It is very difficult to play against our style of football, as we have very technically-gifted players and it’s tough to press us. Even in defence, only we know how to perform that variable pressing game.

“We played the first leg well, so we had confidence and also patience, which we needed to escape the Juve pressing in the first half.

“During the half-time break, we talked about the pressing on Emre Can, as the wingers had to push forward more, keeping Lasse Schone and Frenkie de Jong closer together.

“The spaces opened up and we could go to attack. Juventus had to defend at that moment, but we went 2-1 up and had many more scoring opportunities.

“Our tie with Real Madrid was similar, as again we should’ve scored more goals in Amsterdam. We need to convert more of our chances and kill games off earlier. Having said that, I am very happy and proud of the team and the whole staff.”

The tempo Ajax are able to keep in comparison with other teams is remarkable, especially considering the lack of squad rotation.

“We train well and always have a plan. Training is important, working together with the medical staff, and of course the quality of the players.”

Ajax had not reached the semi-finals since 1996-97 and become the first Dutch side to get there since PSV Eindhoven in 2004-05.

“For many years, Dutch football was on the slide, but we have some incredible talents at the moment and it can keep getting better.”

Their next opponents will be either Manchester City or Tottenham Hotspur.

“Pep Guardiola has a pretty similar philosophy to mine. If we play the way we did against Real Madrid and Juventus, then we ought to feel confident against either of these teams too.”

Allegri: Ronaldo is Juve's 'future'

https://www.football-italia.net/137159/allegri-ronaldo-juves-future

Apr 19, 2019

Max Allegri insists Cristiano Ronaldo is Juventus’ ‘future’ and his side have had a ‘great’ season, while hitting out at Medhi Benatia, who ‘didn’t want to play’.

Juve can clinch the Scudetto against Fiorentina on Saturday, but the game’s build-up has been overshadowed by the Bianconeri’s Champions League exit to Ajax.

“Luckily tomorrow we have the opportunity to secure the Scudetto,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“We must look ahead and dispose of the disappointment, without justifications or excuses.

“Once we win the League we can plan the future, with clarity and without getting caught up in emotion.

“The League must be celebrated because it’s a great objective of ours. It’s the result of a lot of work and it comes despite a season with many difficulties like injuries.

“It’ll have been a positive season with 50 percent of our objectives achieved. Perin is out until the end of the season, as are Khedira and perhaps Mandzukic.

“Dybala is out for three weeks, Douglas and Caceres for 10 days. Chiellini will perhaps be back against Inter, while Barzagli is better.

“I hear so many people explaining what football is. They’re things that maybe I’ll write down

and next season, if we play in a Champions, League quarter-final, I’ll go and read them.

“It’s important to listen to those who explain football very well. Football isn’t an exact science. Juve play to win every competition every season.

“We contested the Champions League quarter-finals not in the best condition, we lost and rightly went out.

“We lost four balls and it seems Ajax had an extraordinary match. They played better in Amsterdam and we did better on Tuesday than in the first leg, yet strangely the result penalised us.

Some reports claim Ronaldo is already looking to leave the Old Lady after their Champions League disappointment, while Allegri’s contract expires next summer…

“Ronaldo’s had an extraordinary season and will play tomorrow,” affirmed the 51-year-old.

“Cristiano plus Juventus doesn’t mean the Champions League is secure. He’s the future of Juventus.

“He’s serene and calm, as he is disappointed like we all are because we went out of a competition that we thought about winning.

“Now there’s no use talking about the Champions League. We need to think about winning the League.

“You never know what the future holds, but we haven’t talked about anything yet. We were focused on the Champions League and now the League, which we need to celebrate first of all.

“It’s an objective that comes after great sacrifices and constant daily work. It’s a great season.

“In the event of winning the title, we won 50 percent of trophies we participated in, then there’s some regret for exiting the cup, which is normal.”

Benatia left Juve for Qatar in January and recently questioned Allegri’s man-management…

“Between the beginning of December and the end of January, he didn’t want to play,” concluded the former Milan boss.

Juve squad to face Fiorentina: Szczesny, Pinsoglio, Del Favero; De Sciglio, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Bonucci, Cancelo, Rugani, Spinazzola; Pjanic, Matuidi, Emre Can, Bentancur, Nicolussi Caviglia; Ronaldo, Cuadrado, Kean, Bernardeschi, Mavididi

Juventus need a point to secure their eighth consecutive Scudetto, but old rivals Fiorentina will do all they can to extend a nightmare week.

It kicks off at the Allianz Juventus Stadium at 17.00 UK time (16.00 GMT).

The Bianconeri were in this same position a week ago, ready to get the title party started a record six rounds early, but allowed SPAL to come back and beat them 2-1.

That was followed by a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Ajax that knocked them out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

While an eighth Serie A title in a row is a remarkable feat, it is a fact that Juventus have won less this season than in recent campaigns, managing only the Italian Super Cup.

They went out in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals to Atalanta and despite having Cristiano Ronaldo, were deeply disappointing in Europe yet again.

Max Allegri said he’ll remain on the Juventus bench, although the fans might be turning on him and the club, so even if the Scudetto is clinched today, there won’t be much of a party atmosphere in Turin.

The injury list is extensive, missing Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic, Sami Khedira, Giorgio Chiellini, Douglas Costa, Mattia Perin and Martin Caceres.

Juan Cuadrado therefore completes the trident attack with Federico Bernardeschi, as Cristiano Ronaldo is moved into a centre-forward role, leaving teenage sensation Moise Kean on the bench.

Fiorentina aren’t in a much better mood, as Vincenzo Montella debuted with a dismal 0-0 home draw against Bologna after replacing Stefano Pioli.

Marko Pjaca is out for the season and will therefore return to Juventus after his ill-fated loan spell.

Federico Chiesa has been linked with a move away in the summer, with Juventus among those interested, and he leads the way with Giovanni Simeone and Kevin Mirallas.

Luis Muriel is rested, as Fiorentina will face Atalanta in Thursday’s absolutely crucial Coppa Italia semi-final.

Goals are a real problem, as the Tuscans fired blanks in their last two games and a third would be their longest negative streak since February 2012.

Since the Juventus Stadium opened, the Viola have lost all seven Serie A visits here, conceding 14 goals.

Juventus: Szczesny; Cancelo, Bonucci, Rugani, Alex Sandro; Emre Can, Pjanic, Matuidi; Cuadrado, Ronaldo, Bernardeschi

Fiorentina: Lafont; Milenkovic, Ceccherini, Pezzella, Hancko; Benassi, Veretout, Dabo; Mirallas, Simeone, Chiesa

Alex Sandro’s diving header got Juventus back on track, but Fiorentina have dominated and Federico Chiesa hit the woodwork twice.

The Bianconeri were still smarting after their shock Champions League quarter-final exit at the hands of Ajax midweek. They had needed only a point last week to secure the eighth straight Scudetto, but that party was postponed by a 2-1 defeat at relegation-threatened SPAL. Add a massive injury list – including Giorgio Chiellini, Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic, Sami Khedira, Douglas Costa and Mattia Perin – and the mood was somewhat bleak. Fiorentina weren’t in better shape, as Vincenzo Montella’s debut after Stefano Pioli resigned was a dire 0-0 draw with Bologna.

The Viola had lost all seven Serie A games since the Juventus Stadium first opened, conceding 14 goals, so had a notoriously poor record against their old rivals.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s ferocious volley flashed across the face of goal from an Alex Sandro cross in the opening minutes.

However, Federico Chiesa pulled back from the by-line and Wojciech Szczesny was caught in a crowd in the six-yard box, including Daniele Rugani and Emre Can, allowing Nikola Milenkovic to fire in the rebound and give Fiorentina a shock lead.

It was almost 2-0 soon after, as they went on the counter three against two only for Kevin Mirallas to blast inches over the bar.

The same situation occurred again on 20 minutes, this time Leonardo Bonucci made a decisive interception as Giovanni Simeone had rolled across for what would’ve been a Chiesa tap-in.

Juve countered from that corner and Federico Bernardeschi’s low drive was deflected to skim the near post, but Fiorentina again threatened, as Simeone had wandered offside when he tapped in the roll across from Mirallas.

Jeers started to rain down from the stands, as Chiesa was clear on goal from a Marco Benassi through ball when his first touch let him down.

Ronaldo and Miralem Pjanic had hopeful but central efforts from distance straight at Alban Lafont, but the Viola could easily have been 4-0 up by half-time.

Mirallas got down the right, pulled back for Chiesa’s right-foot curler to thump the upright from the edge of the box.

Instead, Juve did equalise from a set play. Pjanic’s corner found Alex Sandro for a stooping header at the near post, surprising Lafont from six yards.

Chiesa rattled the frame of the goal again before half-time, his rocket bouncing off the underside of the bar and back out again with Szczesny stranded.

Juventus 1-1 Fiorentina (Half-Time)

Milenkovic 6 (F), Alex Sandro 37 (J)

Juventus: Szczesny; Cancelo, Bonucci, Rugani, Alex Sandro; Emre Can, Pjanic, Matuidi; Cuadrado, Ronaldo, Bernardeschi

Fiorentina: Lafont; Milenkovic, Ceccherini, Pezzella, Hancko; Benassi, Veretout, Dabo; Mirallas, Simeone, Chiesa

Juventus fought back from a furious Fiorentina first half performance to win 2-1 and celebrate their eighth consecutive Scudetto.

Chiesa rattled the frame of the goal again before half-time, his rocket bouncing off the underside of the bar and back out again with Szczesny stranded.

Juventus were a little more settled after the break and took the lead with a stroke of luck. Ronaldo burst down the right, pulled back from the by-line for Bernardeschi, but German Pezzella got there first to accidentally prod past his own goalkeeper at the near post.

Simeone’s roll across for Chiesa was intercepted by some desperate Joao Cancelo defending, but at the other end Ronaldo’s effort was charged down by Milenkovic and Ceccherini flung himself at the Juan Cuadrado follow-up.

Lafont flew to fingertip a Pjanic scorcher over the bar and, with an eye on the upcoming Coppa Italia semi-final with Atalanta, Vincenzo Montella subbed Chiesa for Luis Muriel.

Nonetheless, in the final minutes Szczesny had to perform a crucial save when one-on-one with Bryan Dabo.

Allegri: 'Juve won it at Bologna'

Max Allegri claims Juventus “won the Scudetto at Bologna” and urged his Bianconeri to embrace a “calm state of mind” in Europe.

The comeback to beat Fiorentina 2-1 means Juve match Inter’s record of securing the Scudetto with five rounds to spare.

“I am very happy, because we hit an important target and won half the trophies we competed for this season,” the Coach told DAZN.

“We remained organised in the first half, but brought it home in the second.”

Considering their Champions League quarter-final exit to Ajax only a few days ago, was the mood in any way dampened?

“It is a Scudetto and needs to be celebrated, because it’s not easy to win. We secured the title with five games left and that proves just how remarkable our season has been.

“There were strong opponents in the Champions League this year, as in October I saw Tottenham play in Barcelona and realised the Catalans were the favourites for the trophy.

“We lost, but the team mustn’t let its head drop. On Tuesday, there were another 30 minutes to go and we were 2-1 down, so we could’ve fought back. It’s important to learn how to deal with unexpected events.

“The main thing we must improve next year is how to play with a calm state of mind and confident we’ll be able to do it, as that can make the difference in the big games.

“I think we won the Scudetto in Bologna, between the Champions League matches with Atletico Madrid and the Napoli head-to-head. That was the decisive match. We had a lot of problems to deal with.

“There were constant new injuries and recurring fitness problems, so at times I had only 14 players to train with. Despite it all, we won by a big advantage.”

New Juve shirt leaked?

Juventus’ shirt for next season has reportedly been leaked, sporting a pink stripe and a half-and-half design.

According to Footy Headlines, the shirt will be half white and half black, with the colours of the three Adidas stripes and arms in reverse.

However, most striking is the thin, pink stripe that runs through the middle of the shirt.

Pink has not appeared on a Juve jersey since their away jersey three seasons ago.

What will appease fans, on the other hand, is the black patch beneath the Jeep logo across the front of the shirt being removed.

Lippi: Juve weren't 'lucky'

Lippi: «Juve-Ajax? Mancava Chiellini. Vorrei rigiocare la finale col Milan a Manchester»

https://www.football-italia.net/137286/lippi-juve-werent-lucky

Apr 24, 2019

Marcello Lippi has claimed that Juventus’ Champions League exit was down to luck. “They didn’t have big players available...”

Lippi remains the last Juve Coach to win the Champions League after the Old Lady lost to Ajax in the quarter-finals, that success coming all the way back in 1996.

“Juve gave me my first great international satisfaction,” he told Rai Radio.

“The year before, we won the League and Coppa Italia. Then we won the Champions League and the following year we lifted the Intercontinental Cup.

“Great players are needed to win the Champions League and then a great sense of belonging is needed, the desire to make yourself available to someone else.

“My lads did that, and in fact they went on top of the world. This season they didn’t have the good fortune of having big players available at decisive moments.

“Chiellini to Juventus, for example, is almost as important as Ronaldo and he wasn’t there against Ajax.

“If I could play another game again, it would be Juve-Milan. The Final we lost on penalties left such a bitter taste in our mouths.”

Max Allegri’s position has come back under the spotlight following the Bianconeri’s elimination from European competition...

“Whoever wins things always has great quality,” maintained the 71-year-old.

“Winning is never easy. And I’m referring to Allegri. Many criticise him on the grounds that his teams don’t play good football, but his teams play to win and they always win.”

Finally, the former Italy CT revealed who was the best player he had ever coached.

“I hope no-one will get offended if I say Zinedine Zidane,” he concluded.

Allegri ready for next season

Juventus boss Max Allegri says he is ready to plan for next season with Andrea Agnelli and that he could experiment against Inter on Saturday.

Juve have already secured their eight straight Scudetto going into the Derby d’Italia, where Allegri confirmed he could try Federico Bernardeschi, Joao Cancelo and Emre Can in unfamiliar roles.

“Inter-Juventus is a wonderful match,” he said at a Press conference.

“We have to come away with a result because between now and the end of the season, we have the objective of continuing to pick up points in these games, which stimulate us.

“Chiellini has returned and will play tomorrow. Instead, we’ve lost Bentancur to a muscle strain.

“In attack if Kean plays, the change will be Bernardeschi. We don’t have many alternatives but we’ll adapt.

“Bernardeschi is now forced to play as a forward, but I want to know if he can play as a central midfielder in the future.

“It’s an experiment that excites me. The other tactical variant I’d like to try is that of Cancelo, also as a ‘mezz’ala’. For the rest, Emre Can in defence is nothing new.”

The Coach was then asked about Beppe Marotta, who left the Bianconeri for Inter earlier in the season, and the topics he would discuss with Agnelli.

“I haven’t seen him since he left, so I’d like to see him again,” he added.

“We did great things together. We’re professionals, roads can divide but that doesn’t detract from the good deeds we did.

“I’ll meet Agnelli. We’ll meet to make plans and create new objectives. The most important thing is to be clear-headed and make decisions to lay the foundations for an important season.

“We need to come out better for it, planning for a season that will be difficult. The Champions League is as beautiful as a b******.

“We must arrive at the right time in the best possible condition. Injuries can be a decisive factor, but talking now is useless.

“My tenure has lasted five years and I can only speak for myself: if you don’t win the Champions League for five years, it’s not exactly a drama.

“We need to understand where we went wrong, work and have a little more luck. This year, for the first time in my five years, we got to the quarter-finals in bad shape.

“Certainly, I’m also responsible for that.”

Juventus are without five first-teamers for the Derby d’Italia against Inter on Saturday, but Giorgio Chiellini is back.

Mattia Perin and Sami Khedira will not return this season, while Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Douglas Costa remain sidelined.

However, Chiellini features for the first time since before the Bianconeri’s Champions League exit to Ajax earlier in the month.

Padding out the squad are Under-21 trio, Dario Del Favero, Matheus and Hans Nicolussi Caviglia.

Juve squad to face Inter: Szczesny, Pinsoglio, Del Favero; De Sciglio, Chiellini, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Bonucci, Cancelo, Rugani, Spinazzola; Pjanic, Matuidi, Emre Can, Matheus, Nicolussi Caviglia; Ronaldo, Cuadrado, Kean, Bernardeschi
