Ronaldo: 'Knew it'd be difficult'

Oct 27, 2018

Cristiano Ronaldo said Juventus “knew it would be difficult” for their comeback and 2-1 win at Empoli. “I felt confident and went for goal.”

The Bianconeri had been trailing at half-time to a Francesco Caputo strike, but Ronaldo converted a penalty and fired in a stunner from 20 metres.

“It was a very complicated game. We knew it would be difficult, especially after a Champions League tie and we were a bit tired,” Ronaldo told Sky Sport Italia.

“We stayed in the game, increased our possession, created more chances after the break and in the end deserved the victory.

“I don’t remember the goal very well, I’ll have to watch it again! It all happened very quickly, but I felt confident and I went for the goal.

“This is a very important week, we put in a fantastic performance against Manchester United at Old Trafford and we performed well here too in difficult circumstances.”

Allegri: 'Moment of Ronaldo magic'

https://www.football-italia.net/129919/allegri-moment-ronaldo-magic

Oct 27, 2018

Max Allegri praised the Cristiano Ronaldo winner as “a moment of magic” for Juventus, but also complimented Empoli for their organisation.

Francesco Caputo’s curler had put Empoli deservedly in front going into half-time, but Bennacer bumped into the back of Paulo Dybala for a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty, then the Portuguese star turned it around with a ferocious strike into the far top corner.

“The team had started with the right approach, but after 10 minutes we slowed down the tempo of our passing and allowed a few too many Empoli counters,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia after the 2-1 victory.

“Empoli are tough to play against, as they had one centre-forward, two trequartista and the wingers that had pace, so we had to be wary of the counter and that is how they scored the goal.

“In the second half, we created many chances and deserved the victory, but we have to tip our hats to Empoli for being so well-organised and impressive.

“I left at the end because there were five seconds to go and we would either win or equalise, there was no other option.”

Giorgio Chiellini was named in the starting XI, but pulled out in the warm-up with an injury.

“Chiellini felt a twinge and wasn’t sure, so it was best not to risk it. Daniele Rugani played very well. Miralem Pjanic wasn’t as sharp as usual and I moved Rodrigo Bentancur to block off the Empoli counter-attacks.

“I told the lads, this was a game we had to win, it didn’t matter how well or badly we played. The goal was a moment of magic from an extraordinary player and it’s something kids will try to copy in the schoolyard. It’s much easier to get kids passionate about that rather than explaining tactics to them.

“I continue to maintain there is too much theory in Italian football schools and it pains me to see kids go to training and not even enjoy themselves. We’ve got to focus on the simple things in life first.”

On this day: Juventus founded

https://www.football-italia.net/130109/day-juventus-founded

Nov 1, 2018

Today marks the 121st anniversary of the founding of Serie A’s most successful club, Juventus.

The club was founded on November 1, 1897 by students from the Massimo D'Azeglio Lyceum school, and initially wore pink and black kits.

It was in 1903 that the famous Bianconeri kits were adopted, with then Juve player Tom Gordon Savage sourcing black and white kits from his hometown side, Notts County.

Savage had met his wife, Sarah, in Turin and had two children in the city, Ettore and Richard Savage.

The first Scudetto arrived in 1905, before a split in the club the following year led to President Alfred Dick forming a new side: Torino.

That league triumph wasn’t followed up by quick success, with the dominant Old Lady we know today only really coming into being after the club was bought by FIAT owner Edoardo Agnelli in 1923.

Juventus-fans-_Piazza_Castello490epa.jpg

Agnelli financed the construction of a new stadium, and the club’s first ever professional Coach, the Hungarian Jenő Károly brought a second Scudetto in 1926.

The 1930s saw Juve really become a dominant force in Italy, winning five Scudetti in a row, a feat matched only be il Grande Torino, and beaten only by the current Bianconeri side.

However, following the last of those consecutive triumphs Juventus fell away, with Torino becoming Italy’s dominant side both before and after the Second World War.

The early 50s brought a further two Scudetti, but it was with the arrival of John Charles and Omar Sivori, joining Giampiero Boniperti up-front that once again took the Bianconeri up a level.

They became the first ever Italian side to win 10 league titles, winning the Scudetto in 1958, 1960 and 1961.

The 1970s and 80s brought further Scudetti, as well as European success in the form of the 1977 UEFA Cup, the 1984 Cup Winners’ Cup and the 1985 European Cup.

However, the latter was marred by tragedy as 39 Juve supporters were killed after Liverpool supporters broke through barriers at Heysel Stadium, causing a mass crush.

Aside from the 1986 Scudetto, there was a period of relative decline after Heysel, with Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan and a Napoli inspired by Diego Maradona ending the Turin club’s domestic dominance.

Lippi-suit-epa.jpg

It was not until the arrival of Marcello Lippi for the 1994-95 season, with the cigar smoking Coach winning the Scudetto in his first campaign.

The following season Lippi led a side featuring Alessandro Del Piero, Antonio Conte and Gianluca Vialli to a Champions League triumph, though they would lose in the final in the two following seasons, having won Serie A.

Lippi left during the 1998-99 season, and his replacement Carlo Ancelotti could only finish second in the two subsequent campaigns, missing out on the Scudetto by one point and then two points to Lazio and Roma respectively.

That prompted the club to bring Lippi back, and he won another two Scudetti before losing the 2003 Champions League final to Milan.

Fabio Capello’s arrival in 2004 brought a further two Scudetti, but there was a dark cloud hanging over the club.

Wiretaps were unearthed of general manager Luciano Moggi attempting to influence the appointment of referees, and the club was demoted to Serie B, with the two previous titles stripped.

The 2004-05 Scudetto remains unassigned, with the following season’s title awarded to Inter as a result of the scandal.

Those titles remain a controversial issue, with Juventini and indeed the club continuing to count them, especially after prosecutor Stefano Palazzi accused the Nerazzurri of the same crimes in 2011.

However, the statute of limitations had expired and no charges were ever brought against Inter.

Though many of the team’s stars left rather than remaining with Juventus in Serie B, several stayed, including Del Piero, Gianluigi Buffon, David Trezeguet, Pavel Nedved and Mauro Camoranesi.

Del_Piero-_Frosinone490epa.jpg

The Bianconeri won the second division, returning to Serie A at the first time of asking, but despite some qualified initial success they were unable to return to their pre-Calciopoli heights.

That all changed in the summer of 2011 when, after two seventh-place finishes in a row, Antonio Conte returned to the club as Coach.

Aided by a shrewd summer transfer campaign which saw Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Stephan Lichtsteiner arrive in Turin, the former midfielder led the Old Lady to the title unbeaten.

Juventus have won the Scudetto in every season since then, taking seven on the bounce as well as the last four Coppe Italia under Conte's replacement, Massimiliano Allegri.

Despite their domestic domination though, European success has continued to prove elusive, with Max Allegri’s side losing the Champions League final in 2015 and 2017.

Having won the Coppa Italia 12 times and Serie A on 34 - 36 if you’re a Juve fan - occasions, adding to those two European Cups is the final frontier a very Old Lady.

Allegri: ‘Juventus can’t relax’

Nov 2, 2018

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri warns they can’t be distracted by Manchester United - “winning games is not easy”.

The Bianconeri face the Red Devils in the Champions League on Wednesday, but first they take on Cagliari in Turin.

“I’m asking for what we have to do, which is to win the game,” Allegri began in his pre-match Press conference.

“The proof of that is Empoli where we struggled, because we started well and then fell asleep. So winning games is not easy.

“You’re playing against teams with their own goals to achieve, and then they’re playing against Juventus so getting a result is an important scalp for them, particularly this year.

“We need to show great respect and keep our concentration high to win these games, which you can only win on the pitch.

“We can’t afford to drop points because Inter and Napoli are behind us. It’s a long season, there are many points available and we can’t afford to get it wrong.

“The league is different from the Champions League, because in the latter there are fewer games and they’re all high profile.

“In the league it’s different, and we could put the league at risk with these drops in intensity. We actually suffered less against Genoa [a draw] than against Empoli [a win].

“Tomorrow we face Cagliari, the team that runs the most. They have good technique and a striker like [Leonardo] Pavoletti who is one of the best in the penalty box and in the air.

"Cagliari are a very fast team and above all they have Pavoletti who is very strong in the air. We are a very physical team if [Mario] Mandzukic plays, without him we become less physical.

“We need to get back to winning ways in our stadium in the the league, and after that we can think about the Champions League.

“We have the chance to secure qualification and then we go to Milan before the international break. We have a nice week ahead of us.

“We’re going strong, but so are those behind us. Inter are having a great season, Napoli lost the head-to-head game and that’s the only difference between ourselves and Napoli.

“We can’t think about what has been done, we have a game tomorrow that we have to win. To do that you need great respect for the opponent throughout the game, unless you can kill it before then.

“This year we’re creating more than last year but we’re scoring less. Part of that lower percentage is scoring on a dead ball, and we have to do that tomorrow.

"We also need to try not to concede, because we've conceded seven so far and that projects to 30 across the season.

"That could put the Scudetto at risk, because with 30 goals conceded you won't win the league.

It was reported this morning that Giorgio Chellini could miss out…

“Chiellini and [Federico] Bernardeschi will be out tomorrow. [Sami] Khedira and [Mario] Mandzukic are back in the group.

"[Miralem] Pjanic and [Blaise] Matuidi will play unless they pass out today. For the third I need to choose between [Rodrigo] Bentancur, [Juan] Cuadrado as a mezzala or Khedira, who hasn't played for a long time.

"At the back [Joao] Cancelo will come back in, [Leo] Bonucci will play and then I have to choose one centre-back and who will play left-back, Alex Sandro - who has played a lot of games - or [Mattia] De Sciglio.

"Up-front Ronaldo will play and I need to decide who will play with him. Mandzukic is fine, he needed to recover his mental energy as much as anything.

"We'll see if we go for two midfielders or three, and who goes next to Ronaldo. It could be [Paulo] Dybala, Mandzukic or Douglas Costa, who is getting back to top condition.

"Mattia Perin? No, [Wojciech] Szczesny will play. Perin will get his chance though, Juventus need two great goalkeepers but of course there has to be a first and a second.

"The decision to sign Perin was inspired though."

Even before his injury, many pundits and fans felt Bernardeschi had suffered a drop in form.

“We need to be balanced,” Allegri said.

“Federico has made great strides, but after the first games he was painted as someone who was transformed and was already a great player.

“Then we went to the national team and came back with a muscular problem and he played through it. Now I’ve put him out and until he’s fit he won’t be back. His recent performances are due to that.

“It takes calm and balance, we got caught up in early enthusiasm, but players need to grow mentally.

“Federico made a crazy jump in quality, which is to his credit, but finding the right maturity takes time. That goes for him, [Daniele] Rugani and many youngsters in Italy.

“In Italy we get too carried away.”

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri dismisses talk of being Champions League favourites - “this year the prime candidate is Barcelona”.

The Bianconeri have won all three of their European matches so far, and have been touted by many as potential winners.

“We’re working this year, as in recent years, to achieve the objective we haven’t been able to achieve in recent years,” Allegri acknowledged in his pre-Cagliari Press conference.

“It also takes a bit of luck. Juventus have played two finals in the last four years, and it’s not nothing that in the other two we were eliminated after a great match in Madrid and after overturning the first leg in Munich.

“I don’t feel privileged, I feel like a Coach who is fortunate enough to be at Juventus, one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and with a squad that can aspire to win the Champions League. But it’s not certain, just as the league isn’t.

“Last year when Real Madrid were 20 points behind Barcelona I said they were favourites for the Champions League. They had some good luck, we had some bad luck and they won.

“This year the prime candidate to win the Champions League is Barcelona.

“You just have to watch their games, not simply look at them. It’s simple. They’re the number one candidate, we’re among the top four favourites. But we need to be calm.

“We’ll get through the group stage, but I’ll talk to you about the Champions League but now we’ll think about Cagliari.

“I’m not superstitious, I’m realistic and objective. And in my opinion Barcelona are number one favourites.”

Paul Pogba will return to Turin with Manchester United on Wednesday, and Allegri was asked if he’d be useful for the current Juve side.

“Talking about him and anyone who plays for another team is pointless. What do you want me to say?

“He’s a great player who still has room for improvement, he has a career ahead of him and he needs to reach full maturity.

“He’s a Manchester United player now and unfortunately we have to face him on Tuesday. It would be better if he didn’t come, but we have to face him as we did over there.

“Will he get a standing ovation? The fans should give standing ovations to our players, not others.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has taken almost all of the free-kicks this season, and not very well, does the Coach feel able to tell him to step aside?

“From a distance it’s easier for Ronaldo to shoot, from close range [Paulo] Dybala and [Miralem] Pjanic are more dangerous.

“When we’re shooting from the left, Ronaldo has a more dangerous strike than the other two.

“He wants to take them all, but he’s a smart lad and he knows Dybala and Pjanic hit them well, so we’ve divided them this way.”

Juventus - Cagliari MATCH PREVIEW

https://www.football-italia.net/SerieA/match/preview/125168

Nov 3, 2018

Juventus host Cagliari in Saturday’s late game as they aim to create a bigger lead at the top of the Serie A table.

La Vecchia Signora have had an unsurprisingly fantastic start to the season, as the only two points they dropped were against Genoa a fortnight ago. Cristiano Ronaldo has arguably been one of the league’s most influential players with seven goals and four assists so far in a Bianconeri shirt. He along with Milan’s Suso have been involved in 11 goals this season each, as Ronaldo is on the search for another record-breaking year.

Juve could potentially rest some players in this match, as they have a Champions League clash against Manchester United at the Allianz Juventus Stadium next Wednesday. Regardless, they almost have a full-strength squad to choose from, with Emre Can their only absentee.

Meanwhile, Cagliari have surprised many this season so far. They have only lost once in their last five games - a 2-0 defeat away to Inter - while last Sunday they defeated Chievo 2-1 thanks to goals from Leonardo Pavoletti and Lucas Castro. The former has been in ripping form for the Sardinians, with five goals and one assist in his eight starts.

Rolando Maran, as opposed to Allegri, has a growing injury list. Ragnar Klavan, Diego Farias, Charalambos Lykogiannis and Marko Pajac are out for the visitors.

It will be interesting to see Max Allegri’s approach to the match, as so far the Rossoblu have held Fiorentina and Milan to draws. However, one should expect a one-sided affair regardless of the 11 that Allegri fields, as they have far too much quality that should see off their opponents.

Keep an eye on: Joao Cancelo (Juventus) - Although not quite as influential as compatriot Ronaldo, Joao Cancelo has been one of the most consistent Juventus players so far this term. He has started seven out of their 10 Serie A matches and recorded an assist, but his attacking prowess has impressed many, as the 24-year-old has shown that he is one of the best right backs in the world.

Last season: Juventus 3-0 Cagliari

Form Guide: Juventus (W D W W W) Cagliari (W D W L D)

Stat fact: Since a 2-0 home win in November 2009, Cagliari have managed only three 1-1 draws in 15 Serie A meetings with Juventus. The last victory in Turin was 3-2 in January 2009, but curiously all three stalemates were away fixtures.

Top tip: Juventus to win by two or more goals.

Juventus (probable): Szczesny; Cancelo, Bonucci, Benatia, De Sciglio; Bentancur, Pjanic, Matuidi; Douglas Costa, Cristiano Ronaldo, Dybala

Suspended: None

Cagliari (probable): Cragno; Srna, Pisacane, Ceppitelli, Padoin; Ionita, Bradaric, Barella; Castro; Joao Pedro, Pavoletti

Suspended: None

Juventus look to Douglas Costa, Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo against Cagliari, who have the aerial threat of Leonardo Pavoletti.

It kicks off in Turin at 20.30 CET - 19.30 GMT.

Napoli and Inter both won by scoring five goals, so the Bianconeri need a victory to restore the six-point cushion at the top of the table.

Sami Khedira is available on the bench after a month out injured, but Giorgio Chiellini, Federico Bernardeschi, Mario Mandzukic and Emre Can miss out.

Douglas Costa gets his first start since the red card against Sassuolo on September 16, completing the trident attack with Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Joao Cancelo isn’t rested ahead of the Champions League clash with Manchester United, with Mattia De Sciglio at left-back.

Cagliari continue to miss Diego Farias, Charalampos Lykogiannis and ex-Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan.

HT 2-1: Cagliari resist Juventus

https://www.football-italia.net/130221/ht-cagliari-scare-juventus

Nov 3, 2018

Juventus lead Cagliari 2-1 after an eventful first half, as Paulo Dybala scored after 44 seconds, there were two penalty appeals and Cristiano Ronaldo hit the post.

The Bianconeri needed the win to restore their six-point cushion at the top of the table, as Napoli and Inter had already won by scoring five goals. Mario Mandzukic, Giorgio Chiellini, Federico Bernardeschi and Emre Can missed out, though Sami Khedira was back on the bench after a month out. Douglas Costa got his first start since September 16. It took all of 44 seconds to break the deadlock, as Rodrigo Bentancur threaded through for Dybala, who shrugged off two defenders and slipped when taking the right-foot shot from 12 yards, but that ended up helping the ball squirm into the near bottom corner past a surprised Alessio Cragno.

Douglas Costa’s dangerous cross flashed just past the head of Cristiano Ronaldo, but Cagliari had penalty appeals when Medhi Benatia nodded the ball on to his own arm. The referee viewed it on VAR, but when the ball ricochets off another part of the body on to the arm, it is not considered voluntary.

Moments later, an Artur Ionita cross was whipped in for Leonardo Pavoletti to come sliding in from six yards, but Wojciech Szczesny performed a stunning reaction save.

The Cagliari goal was in the air after a series of corners and it came from Joao Pedro. His splendid first touch allowed him to control and cut back around Joao Cancelo, then the low drive went through the full-back’s legs into the near bottom corner.

However, barely 90 seconds later, Juve had restored their advantage. Douglas Costa’s low cross from the left prompted Filip Bradaric to panic and he needlessly came sliding in, accidentally prodding it past his own goalkeeper from close range.

VAR was called into action again for Bradaric, who was having a terrible evening and knocked the ball on with the top of his arm, but the referee ruled it was his shoulder and shrugged off Juve penalty appeals.

Cristiano Ronaldo smashed a powerful effort on to the near upright from a tight angle in first half stoppages.

FT 3-1: Juventus finally beat Cagliari

https://www.football-italia.net/SerieA/match/125168

Nov 3, 2018

Juventus survived a couple of scares to beat Cagliari 3-1 with Paulo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado and a Filip Bradaric own goal.

The Sardinians had to do without Diego Farias, Charalampos Lykogiannis and Ragnar Klavan.

Cristiano Ronaldo smashed a powerful effort on to the near upright from a tight angle in first half stoppages.

Dybala ran into a gap that wasn’t there and his timid appeals were waved away, while Szczesny was alert to pluck a dangerous cross off the head of Pavoletti.

Cristiano Ronaldo saw his shot from a tight angle deflected over at the near post and on the resulting corner Bentancur fired off target.

Cagliari had a big chance to draw level with a goalmouth scramble, as several shots were charged down from close range by desperate Juve defensive bodies.

However, Ronaldo went on the counter-attack from the resulting corner and generously rolled it across for Cuadrado to sweep home undisturbed.

Juventus: Szczesny; Cancelo, Bonucci, Benatia, De Sciglio; Bentancur, Pjanic (Alex Sandro 70), Matuidi (Barzagli 82); Douglas Costa (Cuadrado 46), Cristiano Ronaldo, Dybala

Juventus set new club record

https://www.football-italia.net/130224/juventus-set-new-club-record

Nov 3, 2018

Juventus are enjoying their best ever start to a Serie A season, picking up 31 points from an available 33.

The Bianconeri saw off Cagliari 3-1 this evening, meaning they’ve won 10 of the opening 11 rounds.

Their only hiccup was a 1-1 home stalemate against Genoa.

This allows them to surpass the previous club record of 30 points from the first 11 games, achieved in the 2005-06 season.

The Old Lady has taken 79 Serie A points from an available 90 played in 2018, thanks to 25 wins, four draws and only one defeat to Napoli in April.

Allegri: 'Just not good enough'

https://www.football-italia.net/130226/allegri-just-not-good-enough

Nov 3, 2018

Max Allegri told off Juventus after a 3-1 victory over Cagliari and gave injury updates ahead of Manchester United. “This just isn’t good enough.”

Although Paulo Dybala scored after 44 seconds and Juan Cuadrado completed a late counter-attack, the 3-1 result did not accurately reflect how many problems the Sardinians created in Turin.

We have to defend better, as we concede too many goals and risked letting in an equaliser at the 85th minute,” the Coach told DAZN and Sky Sport Italia.

“Defending like this is tiring and we have to work harder as a unit to prevent these situations. This just isn’t good enough. Even after the first goal we didn’t add a second and drifted out of the game. We can’t always assume that we’ll score two or three goals.”

Allegri revealed there was a new injury concern for Douglas Costa, who made way for Cuadrado at half-time.

“He had some pain in the groin area and it was better not to risk it. Cuadrado did really well, as did Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield. We knew the Uruguayan had quality and just needed a bit of time.

“Miralem Pjanic was tired and felt something in the flexor. Blaise Matuidi was tired. We needed to be sharper today.

“The most important thing now is for everyone to improve our defensive movements, because we need everybody to contribute.”

Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t score this evening, but he did rattle the woodwork and provide an assist for Cuadrado’s goal.

“He has always been a leader and above all an extraordinary player, as you saw from the assist he put on Cuadrado’s foot. These are different players who in the decisive moment always come up with a goal or a great pass.”

Juve host Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, so Allegri was asked to give an update on injuries.

“Giorgio Chiellini and Federico Bernardeschi are ready to play. We have to evaluate Mario Mandzukic’s ankle and Douglas Costa had a muscular twinge. It’ll be a big game and we have to seal our qualification for the next round.”

Allegri: 'Juve don't win trophies now'

https://www.football-italia.net/130351/allegri-juve-dont-win-trophies-now

Nov 6, 2018

Massimiliano Allegri protects his players who aren’t fully fit and warns Juventus have won nothing yet as they host Manchester United.

It kicks off in Turin on Wednesday at 20.00 GMT after the Bianconeri won 1-0 at Old Trafford.

“At this moment, things are going well, but you don’t win trophies at this moment,” warned Allegri in his Press conference.

“Tomorrow we could achieve our first objective, either as group winners or simply being qualified, and then we’ll have another two games if we need them to secure first place.

“The most important thing is to reach March in the best condition and above all be competitive in all the competitions. That includes the Italian Super Cup, which we’ll play against Milan on January 16.”

Blaise Matuidi and Mario Mandzukic are included in the squad, despite some injury concerns, while Federico Bernardeschi, Douglas Costa, Moise Kean and Emre Can are out.

“Mandzukic’s ankle is fine. I didn’t put him on the bench on Sunday, as I was concerned that he’d feel pain going up the steps… I made a joke, but Mandzukic is a very important player for us and having him at our disposal is important. He has problems every year, it was his elbow last time, so in these situations it’s better to give him time to fully recover.

“It’s the same with Bernardeschi, as keeping him on the bench when he’s not 100 per cent, having the temptation to play him and then lose him for other games is pointless. It’s better to wait and have him at 100 per cent against Milan.

“As for the others, I read the papers today suggesting we had dead players. I looked around on the training ground and couldn’t find the corpses.

“I only have two out, really, and I hope to have Bernardeschi back against Milan. As for the others, Mandzukic and Sami Khedira are available.

“We must be careful, because we need a better performance than the one we had in Manchester, because they can be dangerous at any moment. We have to keep great focus, because there is a lot at stake.

“It could be we use the same front three as Old Trafford, because Juan Cuadrado is in good shape. I have to decide whether to rest Matuidi, as on Saturday he gave everything he had and more, but wasn’t very sharp. I could let him rest, because Khedira is in good shape and an important player to have back.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has not yet scored in the Champions League in a Juventus jersey, having been sent off against Valencia.

“I expect him to score goals, of course! But he didn’t really play the first, nor the second, and put in an assist in Manchester. It’s not as if he played that many.”

HT 0-0: Juve only rattle Man Utd

https://www.football-italia.net/130405/ht-juve-only-rattle-man-utd

Nov 7, 2018

Sami Khedira scuffed the best chance of the game on to the upright, as Juventus are goalless at the break with Manchester United.

The Bianconeri were the only remaining side in the Champions League with a perfect record and a point here would be enough to secure qualification for the Round of 16. The pressure was growing on Jose Mourinho after Valencia beat Young Boys 3-1, especially as he missed Romelu Lukaku, Antonio Valencia and Diogo Dalot, choosing Jesse Lingard rather than Marcus Rashford, with ex-Udinese forward Alexis Sanchez as the centre-forward. Juve rested Joao Cancelo and Blaise Matuidi, with Mario Mandzukic carrying a knock, Federico Bernardeschi, Douglas Costa and Emre Can out.

Paul Pogba returned to the Juventus Stadium and was given a very warm welcome from his old fans, who have made no secret of their desire to reunite.

Rodrigo Bentancur’s shot was deflected just wide of the far post and Nemanja Matic was booked early doors for a horrible tackle on Paulo Dybala.

Matic floated the ball over the top and Alexis Sanchez just failed to get there at full stretch, while a counter-attack saw Sami Khedira sting David De Gea’s gloves.

De Gea got down well to beat away a low Juan Cuadrado cross-shot, but Khedira missed a sitter when he scuffed Ronaldo’s assist from 10 yards and hit the far post on 35 minutes.

Pogba intercepted a Dybala volley from the edge of the area and on the counter Ronaldo pulled back only to find nobody in the box.

Juventus 0-0 Man Utd (Half-Time)

CL 1-2: Inexplicable Juve collapse

https://www.football-italia.net/130405/cl-inexplicable-juve-collapse

Nov 7, 2018

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a spectacular volley and Juventus wasted numerous chances, hitting the woodwork twice, but somehow lost 2-1 to Manchester United.

After the restart, Anthony Martial’s angled drive flashed wide, but Dybala almost scored a stunner with his left-foot curler from the edge of the box smacking the crossbar with De Gea totally stranded.

Cristiano Ronaldo had not yet scored in the Champions League in a Juventus jersey, but he was saving up for an absolute stunner. Leonardo Bonucci’s long ball floated over the top, Ronaldo watched it fall over his shoulder and smashed a simply unstoppable right-foot volley into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

It was almost 2-0 moments later, De Gea getting a strong one-handed save to Miralem Pjanic’s strike from the edge of the box. Cuadrado horribly wasted a golden opportunity on the counter, combining with Cristiano Ronaldo only to shin over the bar from close range.

Pjanic’s missile from 25 metres swerved viciously to skim the top corner and Rashford fired wide, but the first real save came on 85 minutes as Anthony Martial burst down the left and his cross-shot was cleared by a combination of Wojciech Szczesny’s hand and Chiellini.

However, Manchester United scored moments later, as substitute Juan Mata curled a free kick into the near top corner from the edge of the D.

Incredibly, the visitors turned it around within four minutes with a bizarre goal. A free kick was whipped in, Marouane Fellaini flicked it on with his head and it took several ricochets off a small crowd of players in the six-yard box, eventually going in off Alex Sandro’s face.

There was even almost a third deep into stoppages, as Rashford was totally unmarked on the counter, but Szczesny came flying out to parry.

There was tension at the final whistle, as Jose Mourinho put his hand to his ear and winked at the crowd. Bonucci and Dybala went over to tell him that was unnecessary and the Coach stormed off raging.

Allegri: 'Juve could've had four goals'

https://www.football-italia.net/130410/allegri-juve-couldve-had-four-goals

Nov 7, 2018

Massimiliano Allegri felt Juventus “could’ve scored three or four in the first half” of the defeat to Manchester United, but “lost the least important game.”

Cristiano Ronaldo finally broke through with a spectacular volley after Sami Khedira and Paulo Dybala had hit the woodwork, but in the final minutes a Juan Mata free kick and set play that ricocheted in off Alex Sandro turned it around.

“It’s a disappointing defeat, because the team played well. We need to improve our finishing, because we never manage to finish games off when we’re in control,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

“We knew with Marouane Fellaini on that we had to avoid giving away free kicks, but we’re doing that too much this season, giving away a lot of free kicks.

“The only way Manchester United were ever going to score was from set plays and we gave them the opportunities.

“Nonetheless, we are still top of the group. It’s understandable to have a win and a defeat to Manchester United, although probably not when you look at how the games actually went…

“I think it’ll do us good in the long run, as we need to learn not to fall asleep in these situations. I saw Manchester United play the same way in the Premier League at the weekend, they did very little for 80 minutes and then won in very similar circumstances.

“We had the chance today to secure the top spot early. I compliment my team for a good performance, but a good performance without a result isn’t worth very much.

“Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal was extraordinary, but we had so many chances. If we’d really gone for it, we’d have scored three or four in the first half alone.

“You can win or lose in football, the good news is we lost the least important game.”

Chiellini: 'Juve were threatening this'

https://www.football-italia.net/130408/chiellini-juve-were-threatening

Nov 7, 2018

Giorgio Chiellini admits Juventus “had been threatening this sort of mess for a few games” after fumbling a lead to lose 2-1 against Manchester United.

The Bianconeri had been in complete control and took the lead through a Cristiano Ronaldo wonder volley, but set plays turned it all around in stoppages.

“We want to go all the way and if we are to do that, we must learn from this sort of mistake,” Chiellini told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ve been threatening this sort of mess for a few games, to be honest, as we get too complacent and run risks that are totally unnecessary.

“Maybe now we’ll get our heads down and focus the way we need to in every single match, taking nothing for granted.

“We had been in total control, but were very wasteful and forgot the details, because we knew where Manchester United could be dangerous.

“If we’re going to lose Champions League games like this, it’s best we do it now rather than later on.”

Ronaldo: 'Man Utd did nothing to win'

https://www.football-italia.net/130412/ronaldo-man-utd-did-nothing-win

Nov 7, 2018

Cristiano Ronaldo said Manchester United “did nothing to win the game” and Juventus “could’ve killed it off three or four times.”

He scored his first Champions League goal in a Juventus jersey, and it was one to remember, letting a long Leonardo Bonucci ball dip over his shoulder before hitting the right-foot volley into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

It didn’t help his team, as they were eventually beaten 2-1 by two late Manchester United goals from set plays.

“The Champions League is a special competition, where you could be winning, but can’t relax, as anything can happen,” CR7 told Sky Sport Italia.

“We dominated the game for 90 minutes, had so many chances, could’ve killed it off three or four times, but we relaxed and were punished.

“Manchester United did nothing to win the game. You can’t even talk about luck, because you have to find your own luck and in this case we just gifted it to them.

“Now we’ve got to lift our heads, as we played really well and are still top of the group.”

Ronaldo also spoke to Viasport Football and described his remarkable volley.

“I saw the replay in the dressing room. I didn’t realise it was a fantastic goal, but I did a good movement and I kick the ball strong.

“I was happy with the goal, but of course I’m a little bit disappointed because we should win the game with three or four goals.

Manchester didn’t do much, they had two chances on set pieces. I know English teams are always looking for set pieces.

“We will learn from our mistakes and we are still top of the group, so it’s all good.”

Ronaldo was asked how far this Juventus team is from going all the way in the Champions League.

“It’s too early, we have to take it step by step. We are top of the group, we’re a good team, but it’s a long way for the final. These people, the club, they dream of winning the Champions League, but we have to take it step by step.

“We have a good team, we have a good Coach, we have good supporters – step by step!”

Scholes: ‘Mourinho showed no class’

Nov 8, 2018

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes wasn’t impressed with Jose Mourinho’s cupped ear to the Juventus fans - “you need to win with a bit of class”.

The former Inter Coach was taunted by the Bianconeri supporters in last night’s Champions League clash, so when his team scored a late winner he cupped his ear to the stands.

“You need to win with a bit of class," Scholes said on BT Sport.

“I don't think there is any need for that. Go over and clap the away fans, shake the manager's hand.

"It is needless but that is just the way he is."

Pogba: 'Thank you, Juve fans'

https://www.football-italia.net/130411/pogba-thank-you-juve-fans

Nov 8, 2018

Paul Pogba thanked Juventus fans for the welcome, but Manchester United “had an extra breath or power to push it at the end.”

The former Bianconeri midfielder was treated with kid gloves by the local supporters in his first trip back to Turin.

“Lovely we won. That was most important,” Pogba told BT Sport after a 2-1 result.

“The fans were very welcoming with me and I really appreciate that. We played against a good team, but the three points were most important.”

Manchester United were under the cosh for long periods, as Juve hit the woodwork twice and took the lead through a Cristiano Ronaldo stunner, but incredibly Juan Mata’s free kick and a last-gasp Alex Sandro own goal turned it around.

“I celebrate for the goal, it was strange it touched a lot of people. We've been playing well together and until the end we've done very well. We had maybe an extra breath or power to push it at the end.”

Paul Pogba said he didn’t celebrate the Manchester United winner against Juventus and wouldn’t rule out a move back. “Who knows? I’m with United now.”

The midfielder was visibly moved when facing his former teammates and saluted the fans before and after the game.

“The win was important, but the Juve fans gave me such a warm welcome,” Pogba told Sky Sport Italia and Rai Sport.

“I didn’t celebrate when we went 2-1 up, it felt too strange. I saw so many people that I know well. We played against a great team and we really had to win tonight.”

Pogba was asked if he could return to Turin permanently.

“Who knows? I’m with United now. There is so much talk about this, but am happy to be playing for Manchester United.

“It was wonderful coming back here, although it felt weird going into the ‘away’ locker room. I was so accustomed to the Juve one.

“The reaction of the fans really moved me, as I missed them and Italian football. It was great to be back in this stadium, where I started out and won big trophies.”

Allegri: 'No Bonucci or Higuain advice'

https://www.football-italia.net/130517/allegri-no-bonucci-or-higuain-advice

Nov 10, 2018

Max Allegri expects Gonzalo Higuain and Leonardo Bonucci to handle facing their former clubs, as “Milan-Juventus is always a balanced encounter.”

It kicks off on Sunday at 20.30 CET - 19.30 GMT.

“Milan-Juventus is always a balanced encounter. We’re playing in front of 70,000 people in a stadium that pushes the Rossoneri on,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We must put in a great performance, both in terms of technique and physicality, to emerge from San Siro with a positive result. Milan are in great shape, as they lost at the last minute in the derby, but won five of their last six.”

It’s above all an emotional evening for two players facing their former club, as Bonucci moved to Milan for one season and swiftly returned, while Higuain was essentially pushed out by Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Higuain gave so much to Juve and was decisive in this team’s victories. Over the summer, a decision was made by both parties and Milan made a great signing, because Gonzalo is one of the best centre-forwards in the world.

“I don’t have any advice to give to Bonucci. He returns to Milan, having only been there for a year, but Leo doesn’t need my advice.

“Mario Mandzukic could well play tomorrow, as he needed some time to recuperate physically and mentally, which is understandable after the World Cup.

“Blaise Matuidi is the same, I tried to limit his playing time, but he realistically needs a whole week off on the beach. If Emre Can had been available, I’d have sent him on vacation, but in the circumstances I still need him here.

“Sami Khedira practically hadn’t played for two months and had a great 45 minutes against Manchester United on Wednesday, then fell away in the last 15 minutes.

“Joao Cancelo has a very good chance of starting on the right. We’ve got Douglas Costa and Federico Bernardeschi back. I don’t think I’ll rest Bonucci or Giorgio Chiellini.”

The defeat to Manchester United, a game Juve had largely dominated for 85 minutes, irritated Allegri and his side.

“Juve only concede goals in two ways: on set plays and when we fall asleep, so these are areas we need to work on. There is no such thing as an unbeatable team and at times a step back helps you take two steps forward.”

Max Allegri believes Juventus lost to Manchester United because they got too caught up in feeling even a draw was “an injustice.”

The Bianconeri go into this game after their first defeat of the season, falling 2-1 to Manchester United through two late goals after Cristiano Ronaldo’s spectacular opening volley.

“In order to finish off games, you need to score goals. At the moment, the statistics show we weren’t often leading by more than one goal, which inevitably leaves the risk of something happening even at the 90th minute,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“The only thing we did wrong on Wednesday was to misunderstand the mood and moment of the game when Manchester United equalised.

“We got a bit swept up by their emotion. Their equaliser felt like an injustice considering how much we dominated, but we still should’ve remained clear-headed. The Champions League is decided in June, certainly not on Wednesday, so we should’ve been more practical and focused on securing qualification.

“Emotional responses can happen, it’s in the past now. I don’t think we need to show a reaction a such, but rather continue as we’ve been doing.

“We were upset after that defeat, perhaps because we are no longer accustomed to it, as Juve hadn’t lost a match since April. We lost the game that is least important in the Champions League group standings, so that’s some consolation.

“The fact remains, we have to increase our ratio of goals scored to chances created. Last season, we had 31 goals by this stage in Serie A, this year it’s 24, but we have more shots and score fewer goals, so that has to be improved.

“It’s only November 10, so we are on the right track. Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t play as a centre-forward, yet is the best striker in the world and we have to make the most of his characteristics.”

Probable line-ups: Milan v Juventus

https://www.football-italia.net/130558/probable-line-ups-milan-v-juventus

Nov 11, 2018

Leonardo Bonucci reportedly asked to be left out of the Juventus starting XI at San Siro, while Milan look to Samu Castillejo and Gonzalo Higuain.

It kicks off at 20.30 CET - 19.30 GMT.

This is always a massive match, but with added spice this time around thanks to the presence of Higuain and Bonucci against their former teammates.

While yesterday it was reported Max Allegri had tested the line-up without Bonucci, instead using Medhi Benatia and Giorgio Chiellini, it was assumed the Coach was trying to protect his defender from the jeers of the crowd.

Instead, La Stampa newspaper today suggest it was Bonucci himself who asked to be left out of the starting XI, as he was concerned at the response he’d get from a packed San Siro.

The Italy international spent only one season at Milan and wore the captain’s armband before returning to Juve, where he was not greeted with open arms by the Bianconeri ultras either.

Paulo Dybala is expected to play in a trequartista role behind Mario Mandzukic and Cristiano Ronaldo in a 4-3-1-2 formation, with Joao Cancelo and Alex Sandro as the full-backs.

Alternatively, Dybala will be on the right side of a trident attack with the same players.

Milan have an injury crisis on their hands, missing Lucas Biglia, Mateo Musacchio, Mattia Caldara, Giacomo Bonaventura and Ivan Strinic.

Andrea Conti’s three-match ban for insulting the referee after a game with the Milan Primavera youth team is valid for Serie A too.

Unlike Bonucci, it seems Higuain is absolutely desperate to face his former teammates, having been pushed out of Juventus this summer to make way for Cristiano Ronaldo.

It’s a familiar situation, as more or less the same thing happened earlier in his career at Real Madrid.

Pipita is determined to play through the pain of a back injury and should be partnered by Samu Castillejo rather than Patrick Cutrone, who was spotted limping after the 1-1 draw with Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday.

Gennaro Gattuso’s comments in the Press conference on Saturday suggest Higuain is perhaps too fired up for this opportunity to prove himself.

“Considering the way he experiences matches, I urge him to stay calm, because he does get easily irritable,” noted Gattuso.

“He needs to stay clear-headed and be hungry, but not desperate. He can’t do much on his own, he needs the team to work together.”

Franck Kessie and Hakan Calhanoglu should also be able to play despite ankle knocks, with Suso the on form figure down the right in a 4-4-2 formation.

Davide Calabria is not 100 per cent fit, so Ignazio Abate is expected to start.

Probable line-ups

Milan (4-4-2): G Donnarumma; Abate, Zapata, Romagnoli, Rodriguez; Suso, Kessie, Bakayoko, Calhanoglu; Castillejo, Higuain

Milan bench: Reina, A Donnarumma, Calabria, Bellanova, Simic, Laxalt, Mauri, Montolivo, Bertolacci, Halilovic, Borini, Cutrone

Juventus (4-3-1-2): Szczesny; Cancelo, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala; Mandzukic, Ronaldo.

Juventus bench: Perin, Pinsoglio, De Sciglio, Rugani, Bonucci, Barzagli, Bentancur, Bernardeschi, Cuadrado, Douglas Costa, Kean

Line-ups: Milan v Juventus

Nov 11, 2018

Gonzalo Higuain recovers from a back problem to start with Samu Castillejo against his former Juventus teammates, but Leonardo Bonucci won’t face Milan.

It kicks off at 20.30 CET - 19.30 GMT.

There is added spice to this clash of the titans this season, because Higuain and Bonucci exchanged places over the summer and are facing their former teammates for the first time.

Higuain missed the last two matches with a back problem, but pushed through the pain barrier to be ready for this huge occasion at San Siro.

Patrick Cutrone is carrying a knock to the ankle, so Samu Castillejo becomes Pipita’s strike partner, with Suso and Hakan Calhanoglu out wide.

Davide Calabria is not 100 per cent fit, so Ignazio Abate starts, but Lucas Biglia, Giacomo Bonaventura, Mateo Musacchio, Mattia Caldara and Andrea Conti are out.

Bonucci is not in the starting XI for Juventus and Turin-based newspaper La Stampa claim it was his own decision not to face the jeers of his old fans.

The defender was only in a Rossoneri jersey for one season, but wore the captain’s armband, before returning to the Old Lady.

Instead, Medhi Benatia is chosen at centre-back with Giorgio Chiellini, while Alex Sandro and Joao Cancelo take the wide roles.

Paulo Dybala acts as a trequartista behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Mandzukic, although it’s possible it could be a straight 4-3-3 instead.

Milan: G Donnarumma; Abate, Zapata, Romagnoli, Rodriguez; Suso, Kessie, Bakayoko, Calhanoglu; Castillejo, Higuain

Milan bench: Reina, A Donnarumma, Calabria, Bellanova, Simic, Laxalt, Mauri, Montolivo, Bertolacci, Halilovic, Borini, Cutrone

Juventus: Szczesny; Cancelo, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Bentancur, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala, Mandzukic, Ronaldo.

Juventus bench: Perin, Pinsoglio, De Sciglio, Rugani, Bonucci, Barzagli, Khedira, Bernardeschi, Cuadrado, Douglas Costa, Kean

HT 0-1: Higuain pays the penalty

https://www.football-italia.net/130579/ht-higuain-pays-penalty

Nov 11, 2018

Mario Mandzukic has given Juventus the half-time lead over Milan at San Siro, but Gonzalo Higuain’s penalty was fingertipped on to the upright.

Gonzalo Higuain shook off a back problem to start against his former teammates with Samu Castillejo, as Patrick Cutrone and Davide Calabria were not 100 per cent fit, with Lucas Biglia, Giacomo Bonaventura, Mateo Musacchio, Mattia Caldara and Andrea Conti unavailable. Juve missed Juan Cuadrado and decided to leave Leonardo Bonucci on the bench, perhaps to protect him from the jeers of his former fans on this first return to San Siro.

After eight minutes, Alex Sandro whipped in a splendid cross from the left and Mario Mandzukic snuck up behind Ricardo Rodriguez for a towering header.

Mandzukic almost repeated the trick soon after, but this time Alessio Romagnoli got back to intercept. Milan moved to 4-3-3 after 25 minutes, moving Castillejo to a wider role.

Suso’s scorcher from a huge distance was well smothered by Wojciech Szczesny, but Milan were awarded a penalty after a VAR viewing on 40 minutes. Higuain was furious, as he was getting the ball under control when Benatia blocked it with his hand.

Pipita stepped up to take the spot-kick, but it was fairly weak and Szczesny managed to fingertip it on to the upright. It was the latest example of Higuain failing to convert a penalty in a big game.

Milan 0-1 Juventus (Half-Time)

Mandzukic 8 (J)

Milan: G Donnarumma; Abate, Zapata, Romagnoli, Rodriguez; Suso, Kessie, Bakayoko, Calhanoglu; Castillejo, Higuain

Juventus: Szczesny; Cancelo, Benatia, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Bentancur, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala, Mandzukic, Ronaldo
