Line-ups: Fiorentina v Juventus

https://www.football-italia.net/131458/line-ups-fiorentina-v-juventus

Dec 1, 2018

Fiorentina rely on Federico Chiesa and Giovanni Simeone against age-old rivals Juventus, who start Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Juan Cuadrado.

It kicks off at 17.00 GMT at the Stadio Franchi.

The Viola have won only two of their last 10 matches and come into the back of this off five consecutive stalemates.

Only once before have they drawn six Serie A games in a row, back in 1989-90.

There is no fixture they’d like to win more than this one, as the rivalry with Juve goes back decades.

The Bianconeri are also unbeaten this season in Serie A, dropping points only in a 1-1 home draw with Genoa.

German Pezzella recovers from an injury to bolster the defence, while Juve-owned Marko Pjaca is only on the bench.

Chiesa, Simeone and Gerson complete the trident attack, with Jordan Veretout and Marco Benassi in midfield.

Juventus miss Alex Sandro, Sami Khedira and Emre Can, while Miralem Pjanic is rested in favour of Rodrigo Bentancur as the playmaker.

Cuadrado takes a more central midfield role than he is accustomed to against his former club.

Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Cristiano Ronaldo form the now traditional front three.

Juve have won two of the last three trips to the Stadio Franchi, but Fiorentina are unbeaten at home this season, conceding only three goals.

Although there is rivalry, Juve players will lay flowers at the Viola bench before kick-off in honour of Davide Astori, their former Italy teammate.

Unfortunately, some still refuse to be civilised about the sport and graffiti appeared near the stadium referencing Heysel and Juve legend Gaetano Scirea.

Fiorentina: Lafont; Milenkovic, Pezzella, Hugo, Biraghi; Edimilson, Benassi, Veretout; Chiesa, Simeone, Gerson

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Bonucci, Chiellini, Cancelo; Cuadrado, Bentancur, Matuidi; Dybala, Mandzukic, Cristiano Ronaldo

HT 0-1: Bentancur breaks down the Viola

Rodrigo Bentancur has given Juventus the half-time lead away to Fiorentina with a nutmeg finish, but VAR ruled against a penalty appeal.

There has been a fierce rivalry between these clubs for decades and with the Viola unbeaten at home this season and Juve dropping points only once to Genoa, there was strong motivation to break those streaks. Fiorentina had drawn five in a row and had German Pezzella back from injury, while Juve-owned Marko Pjaca was only on the bench. Alex Sandro, Sami Khedira and Emre Can didn’t make the trip.

Before kick-off, the Italy internationals and ex-Viola player Juan Cuadrado laid flowers by the edge of the pitch for Davide Astori.

Marco Benassi’s scorcher flashed just past the post in the opening minute, then Edimilson Fernandes caught Giorgio Chiellini in possession inside his own penalty area, testing Wojciech Szczesny.

Cristiano Ronaldo was fortunate to avoid a yellow card for his very late tackle on Giovanni Simeone, then the referee viewed an incident on VAR and opted against a penalty, as Mattia De Sciglio’s cross hit Cristiano Biraghi on the back first, then ricocheted on to his trailing arm. Moments later, Ronaldo ran into Pezzella and those very timid appeals were also rejected.

Juventus took the lead with a fine solo run from Rodrigo Bentancur. The Uruguay international completed a give-and-go with Dybala, cut inside and nutmegged Jordan Veretout with a snooker-shot into the near bottom corner. Alban Lafont had assumed it was going to the far post and was completely wrong-footed.

Fiorentina fought back, as Nikola Milenkovic’s cross from the right took a deflection, so Simeone only scuffed it into the arms of Wojciech Szczesny from point-blank range.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Cancelo drilled wide from distance, while Lafont got down well to parry a Dybala daisy-cutter.

Fiorentina 0-1 Juventus (Half-Time)

Bentancur 31 (J)

Nedved: 'Offensive graffiti shameful'

Furia Nedved: «Scritte contro Scirea e vittime dell'Heysel vergognose»safe_image.php?d=AQB-gynKbjFqFJF3&w=540&

Dec 1, 2018

Juventus director Pavel Nedved said the offensive graffiti from Fiorentina fans was “sad, distressing and shameful.”

Paulo Dybala is playing in a new deeper role assisting Mario Mandzukic and Cristiano Ronaldo, which inevitably means he is less effectively in front of goal.

“Even if you say his statistics don’t match up to last season, I believe he is playing better this year. He has huge potential and I like the way he’s playing,” Nedved told Sky Sport Italia.

Bianconeri director Nedved was asked about the shocking incident near the Stadio Franchi this morning, as there was graffiti on the walls referencing Heysel and the death of Juventus legend Gaetano Scirea.

There had been hopes for a reconciliation and return to civility between the sets of fans, as before the warm-up Giorgio Chiellini, the Italy internationals and ex-Fiorentina player Juan Cuadrado laid flowers for Davide Astori at the side of the pitch.

“On such a day that we go to lay flowers in homage to the Fiorentina captain, seeing the memory of our fans and our historic captain defiled in such a way is sad. It is distressing, a bad example and shameful.

“This sort of attitude sadly is not a problem to be resolved for Fiorentina, but in all stadiums.”

Juve flatten Fiorentina 0-3

Dec 1, 2018

Fiorentina wasted their chances and Juventus were clinical, as Rodrigo Bentancur, Giorgio Chiellini and a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty conquered the Stadio Franchi.

This result means Juve are unbeaten on their travels in 2018 in all competition, while the Tuscans suffered their first home defeat of the season.

There has been a fierce rivalry between these clubs for decades.

Benassi scuffed his finish wide after the restart and Szczesny parried a Chiesa half-volley at the near post when set up by Gerson.

A very dangerous ball was rolled in from the left, but Vitor Hugo turned it away from goal rather than towards it from six yards.

Chiesa’s curler was straight at the goalkeeper, much like Cristiano Ronaldo’s free kick and a Jordan Veretout strike.

However, just as Fiorentina were pushing hard, Juve doubled their lead. A corner was not cleared effectively and Chiellini got the volley while falling backwards, so Lafont got a hand to it, but not enough to stop it looping into the net. Cristiano Ronaldo tried to get the final touch, but couldn’t get there in time.

Gerson’s angled drive flashed across the face of goal, but once again Juve extended their advantage. Edimilson’s handball to charge down a Mario Mandzukic cross was considered voluntary and Cristiano Ronaldo powerfully converted the penalty. It was the Portuguese star’s 10th Serie A goal of the season, the best start for a debutant Juventus player since John Charles in 1957-58.

Fiorentina: Lafont; Milenkovic, Pezzella, Hugo, Biraghi; Edimilson, Benassi (Pjaca 65), Veretout; Chiesa, Simeone, Gerson (Thereau 81)

Allegri: 'Humility key for Juventus. Arrest for Scirea insults'

Juventus, orgoglio Allegri: «Bravi ragazzi, qui a Firenze non era semplice»

https://www.football-italia.net/131469/allegri-humility-key-juventus

Dec 1, 2018

Max Allegri insists the secret to Juventus success is “the humility to work at the same rate physically as your opponents, then technique makes the difference.”

The Bianconeri earned another commanding result this evening, as Fiorentina had conceded only three home goals all season and were unbeaten at the Stadio Franchi before this 3-0 result.

“It wasn’t easy, as the atmosphere was passionate and the whole city had been waiting for this game. I asked the lads to stay solid and after a period where we didn’t play all that well, allowing them to keep the ball for 10 minutes straight, we reorganised,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The second goal helped us shake off the tension and we relaxed into our lead. We had more chances and could certainly have gone 2-0 up earlier.

“You have to be wary, as in Florence the games are never over until the final whistle, they have great technique and pace, but we defended well on their crosses.

“Cuadrado in midfield is a prospect for the future, as he is dynamic and can cover both the wing and further inside. He did well on Wednesday as a full-back, but perhaps was a little more tired when he did get into an attacking role.

“When you’ve got such talented players in attack, they don’t need too many instructions and it’s important not to limit them. We just have to get the ball up to them and I think we’ll slowly improve that.”

Juventus have dropped points only twice this season in all competition, a draw with Genoa and home Champions League defeat to Manchester United.

“This is a squad of great champions, great talents, but above all of great men. Technique alone is not enough, you need players who are open to chasing opponents down, of working for their teammates and going the extra yard.

“You need the humility to work at the same rate physically as your opponents, then the technique can make the difference.”

Fiorentina “condemn the offensive and disrespectful” graffiti on Juventus legend Gaetano Scirea and Heysel, while Max Allegri wants those responsible “arrested.”

The shameful scrawling appeared today outside the away end of the Stadio Franchi ahead of the Serie A match.

As soon as it was spotted, Fiorentina sent staff outside to paint over it.

“The club firmly condemns the offensive and disrespectful writing against ex-Juventus captain Gaetano Scirea and the victims of Heysel,” patron Andrea Della Valle told reporters.

Scirea was in the 1982 World Cup winning Italy squad, but died in a car crash in 1989 while on a scouting mission for Juve in Poland.

Juve Coach Allegri was asked about the situation during the post-match Press conference.

“It’s an issue of civility and respect. It’s not about particular fanbases, but individual people. Whoever wrote such things ought to be arrested.

“While this continues to happen without finding a solution, it is setting a bad example.”

Confirmed: VAR in the CL this season

https://www.football-italia.net/131538/confirmed-var-cl-season

Dec 3, 2018

UEFA’s Executive Committee has confirmed that video assistant referees (VAR) will be implemented in the Champions League this season.

It was announced on Monday that VAR would be used from the last 16 onwards, despite the technology not being used throughout the group stages.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin had previously stated the technology would be introduced next season, but pressure from clubs has brought this date forward.

The governing body of European football has also confirmed that VAR will be used in Europa League as of the last-32 stage this season, as well as next year’s Nations League Finals and European Under-21 Championship.

The technology has been introduced across a number of top European Leagues including Serie A, while it was used at the 2018 World Cup.

Vialli 'moved' by fan support

https://www.football-italia.net/131534/vialli-moved-fan-support

Dec 3, 2018

Former Italy striker Gianluca Vialli admits he was ‘moved’ by the fans’ show of support at the weekend for his battle with cancer.

Vialli shocked the football world last week with his revelation that he had successfully fought off the disease, prompting plenty of choreography at Serie A grounds for the ex-Juventus, Sampdoria and Chelsea man.

“It was beautiful and moving to see they still remember me,” he told Sport Mediaset.

“I find it hard to say, but I think this experience, which I’d gladly do without has made me a better person.

“It’s helped me to see things from another perspective, give more value to things, like my family, and realise that I must take better care of myself.

“It’s something that you must use to become a better person. It happened suddenly and I faced it like when I was a player.

“I immediately set long-term objectives: I didn’t want to die in front of my parents. I want to walk my daughters down the altar when they get married.

“I also have short-term objectives: my surgery, hospital stay, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and going on holiday again in Sardinia with a physique to show off.”

Juventus Serie A Team of 2017-18

DtljLDpXgAAjYHO.jpg:large

https://www.football-italia.net/131574/serie-team-2017-18

Dec 4, 2018

The Serie A Team of 2017-18 has four Juventus players, two from Lazio, two former Roma figures, with Inter and Napoli also represented.

This was voted by the AIC (Italian Players’ Association) and announced in the Gran Gala del Calcio ceremony this evening, the Italian equivalent of the PFA Awards.

Joao Cancelo spent that season with Inter, but moved to Juventus over the summer, joining Giorgio Chiellini, Alex Sandro, Miralem Pjanic and Paulo Dybala.

Joint Capocannoniere title winners Mauro Icardi and Ciro Immobile are both chosen, with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic also representing Lazio.

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly is the only figure from the side that came so close to ending Juve’s hegemony.

Roma fans will be annoyed to see both their players in the Serie A Team of 2017-18 are no longer playing there, as Alisson Becker moved to Liverpool and Nainggolan was sold to Inter.

Gianluca Rocchi was named Referee of the Year in Serie A, with Brescia talent Sandro Tonali the best player in Serie B.

Max Allegri of Juventus was Coach of 2017-18 and Juventus the best team.

Serie A Team of 2018: Alisson (Roma); Cancelo (Inter), Koulibaly (Napoli), Chiellini (Juventus), Alex Sandro (Juventus); Pjanic (Juventus), Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio), Nainggolan (Roma); Dybala (Juventus); Icardi (Inter), Immobile (Lazio)

Supercoppa kick-off time confirmed

https://www.football-italia.net/131638/supercoppa-kick-time-confirmed

Dec 5, 2018

The Supercoppa Italiana between Juventus and Milan will be played at 17.30 UK time on January 16 in Saudi Arabia, the Lega Serie A has announced.

It was confirmed last month that the match would be played in the Middle Eastern nation, despite protests from groups such as Amnesty International, due to the kingdom’s human rights record.

Recently Unione Sindacale dei Giornalisti Rai, the Rai journalists’ union, stated it wasn’t appropriate to play in Saudi Arabia after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the nation’s Turkish embassy.

“The game to decide the Supercoppa Italiana 2018-19, the 31st edition of the trophy, will be held in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium on Wednesday January 19, 2019 starting at 20.30pm local time (18.30 Italian time),” a statement from the Lega Serie A confirms.

Allegri: Scudetto race not over

https://www.football-italia.net/131669/allegri-scudetto-race-not-over

Dec 6, 2018

Juventus boss Max Allegri insists the Serie A title race is not over ahead of Friday’s Derby d’Italia against Inter. “We still have to face our rivals…”

The showdown at Allianz Stadium kicks off tomorrow at 19:30 GMT - click here for a preview.

“Tomorrow will be a beautiful and important match, it’s the Derby d’Italia,” Allegri said at a Press conference.

“Regardless of the League table, it’ll certainly be a fascinating evening of football between two teams who, together with Milan, have made history in Italian football.

“It’s an important game from an emotional, technical and tactical point of view, so we’ll have to be as best prepared as possible.

“The game is like a great Champions League clash, it prepares itself. We’ll face a team who have grown a lot in terms of self-esteem and results.

“Together with Napoli, they’re Juventus’ biggest rivals at the moment. Still, we must continue our journey very calmly.

“Juve haven’t killed the League. It still has to be won and there’s a long way to go. Cancelo on the left? We’ll see, although it’s not for definite.

“Are our rivals only playing for second place? Absolutely not because Ancelotti rightly says Napoli have a great chance.

“We also still have to face our rivals, Inter twice and then the second game against Napoli, so there are nine points up for grabs and the gap could be closed, just as it could be extended. There are still many games left to play.

“Emre Can?  He’s back in the squad and he could even play. Bentancur isn’t in peak condition, so I’ll have to weigh up some situations.”

Bentancur in Juventus squad

Dec 6, 2018

Alex Sandro, Andrea Barzagli and Moise Kean are out of the Juventus squad to face Inter, but Rodrigo Bentancur is fit.

The Bianconeri welcome Luciano Spalletti’s men to Turin for the Derby d’Italia tomorrow night, with an 11 point gap currently separating the sides.

It was feared that Bentancur would miss out with a back injury, but the Uruguayan is in the 20-man squad.

Andrea Barzagli has a long-term injury and misses out, while Alex Sandro and Sami Khedira are not ready to return.

Moise Kean has a muscular injury, so the young striker also misses out, but Emre Can is back after thyroid surgery.

Juventus squad to face Inter: Szczesny, De Sciglio, Chiellini, Benatia, Pjanic, Ronaldo, Dybala, Douglas Costa, Matuidi, Cuadrado, Mandzukic, Bonucci, Cancelo, Pinsoglio, Perin, Can, Rugani, Bentancur, Bernardeschi, Spinazzola

Alessandro Del Piero declares Inter are Juventus’ ‘biggest rivals’ but warns ‘when the Bianconeri want to win, they do’.

Juve face Inter in the Derby d’Italia on Friday, with 11 points separating the two giants of Italian football, and Del Piero admitted ‘it was the greatest rivalry I experienced’ as a player.

“It was the greatest rivalry I experienced,” the former Italy attacker told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“There was also Milan, of course, but the clashes with Inter were more intense for many reasons.

“I’ve been saying it for a couple of years that Inter are Juve’s biggest rivals. The club are solid, the Coach knows Serie A and the squad are valid.

“However, it’s clear that only Juventus can lose the Scudetto. The Champions League is more than just an objective: Juve have shown that when they want to win, they do.”

Line-ups: Juventus v Inter

Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala take on Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic in a fascinating Derby d’Italia between Juventus and Inter.

It kicks off at 19.30 GMT at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin.

The Serie A leaders are hoping to break out further in front of the chasing pack, including third-placed Inter, as they are still unbeaten in the league and dropped points only against Genoa.

Sami Khedira, Alex Sandro and Andrea Barzagli are out of action, but Emre Can is on the bench for the first time since his surgery to remove a thyroid nodule.

Rodrigo Bentancur again takes the midfield reins, although Miralem Pjanic returns from a rest, while Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Cristiano Ronaldo form the trident attack.

Joao Cancelo faces his former club with Mattia De Sciglio as the full-backs.

Inter need to get back on track after some stuttering results, as they lost in the Champions League to Tottenham Hotspur and could be distracted by the upcoming clash with PSV Eindhoven.

Their European future is out of their hands, as if they can’t get a better result than Spurs away to Barcelona, then they’re out of the tournament.

Radja Nainggolan and Dalbert are still carrying knocks after missing the 2-2 draw with Roma.

Luciano Spalletti makes some adjustments, as Sime Vrsaljko is back from injury to replace Danilo D’Ambrosio, while Joao Miranda is favoured rather than Stefan de Vrij for his physicality.

Roberto Gagliardini is a surprise pick in the middle of the park, sending Matias Vecino to the bench.

Matteo Politano and Perisic flank hitman Icardi in this battle of the potential Capocannoniere winner with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The last time Inter beat Juve was 2-1 at San Siro in September 2016, followed by a draw and two defeats.

The Nerazzurri haven’t conquered the Juventus Stadium since a 3-1 result in November 2012, leaving here with only two stalemates from six visits between Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Bonucci, Chiellini, Cancelo; Bentancur, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala, Mandzukic, Ronaldo

Inter: Handanovic; Vrsaljko, Skriniar, Miranda, Asamoah; Gagliardini, Brozovic, Joao Mario; Politano, Icardi, Perisic

Mandzukic decides Derby d'Italia

Dec 7, 2018

Mario Mandzukic’s diving header on a cross from ex-Inter man Joao Cancelo proved decisive, as Juventus won the Derby d’Italia and flew 14 points clear of their opponents.

The Derby d’Italia is always a massive fixture in Italy, but this time it came with leaders Juventus still unbeaten and 11 points clear of third-placed Inter. Alex Sandro, Sami Khedira and Andrea Barzagli were out of action, with Rodrigo Bentancur shaking off a back problem. The Nerazzurri missed Radja Nainggolan and Dalbert, but Sime Vrsaljko returned to the starting XI. Luciano Spalletti surprisingly started Roberto Gagliardini and Joao Mario rather than Matias Vecino and Stefan de Vrij.

The Nerazzurri haven’t conquered the Juventus Stadium since a 3-1 result in November 2012, leaving here with only two stalemates from seven visits between Serie A and the Coppa Italia. More importantly, they have failed to score a single goal here since 2015.

Paulo Dybala started strong, his rising shot fingertipped over the bar, but Giorgio Chiellini got a crucial interception to stop Mauro Icardi meeting Ivan Perisic’s cross from six yards.

Inter had two golden opportunities within a couple of minutes, but both went begging. First Matteo Politano and Icardi combined to set up Gagliardini clear from 10 yards, but his scuffed finish bounced off the inside of the far post and back out.

Moments later, another excellent Politano pull-back from the by-line found Icardi and Perisic, who both went for it and got in each other’s way.

It was Juve’s turn to threaten in a very open and entertaining game. Mario Mandzukic didn’t get enough power to a free header, then Marcelo Brozovic desperately flung himself at a Bentancur strike to deflect it wide. On the resulting corner, Handanovic’s gloves were stung at the near post by Chiellini’s header.

Inter missed another huge opportunity straight after the restart, as Pjanic and Blaise Matuidi errors gifted the ball on the edge of the box, but Politano’s finish from nine yards was desperately blocked by Leonardo Bonucci’s body.

At the other end, Matuidi squirmed away from defenders to roll across the six-yard line, but Mandzukic couldn’t make contact as he tried to flick it.

Joao Miranda was caught in possession, but Dybala ballooned over the bar, as did Cristiano Ronaldo from distance. Bentancur went into the book and will be suspended for the Derby della Mole against Torino.

Juventus did eventually break the deadlock when Cancelo whipped the cross to the back post for Mandzukic’s diving header, the Croatian anticipating his former teammate Kwadwo Asamoah.

Inter started to pin Juve back into their own half as they sought an equaliser with Keita Balde Diao and Lautaro Martinez off the bench, while Emre Can made his comeback after surgery to remove thyroid nodules.

Deep into stoppages, Lautaro Martinez volleyed wide after a poor Cancelo clearance.

Juventus: Szczesny; Cancelo, Bonucci, Chiellini, De Sciglio; Bentancur, Pjanic (Emre Can 82), Matuidi; Dybala (Douglas Costa 72), Mandzukic, Ronaldo

Inter: Handanovic; Vrsaljko, Skriniar, Miranda, Asamoah; Gagliardini (Keita 70), Brozovic, Joao Mario (Lautaro Martinez 77); Politano (Borja Valero 58), Icardi, Perisic

Juventus have equalled the best ever start to a top five league in the era of three points for a victory, set by Paris Saint-Germain, of 43 in 15 rounds.

The Bianconeri have won all but one of their first 15 Serie A games this season, dropping points only in a 1-1 home draw with Genoa.

Mario Mandzukic’s diving header proved enough to defeat Inter this evening and take their tally to 43 points.

This allows Juve to equal the record set by Paris Saint-Germain this season of 43 points from the first 15 Ligue 1 rounds.

Allegri: 'Inter problem in first half'

https://www.football-italia.net/131735/allegri-inter-problem-first-half

Dec 7, 2018

Max Allegri concedes Inter “caused us problems in the first half,” but Juventus readjusted and emerged with a deserved 1-0 victory.

The Bianconeri had a scare in the first half with Roberto Gagliardini hitting the upright, but a Mario Mandzukic diving header on Joao Cancelo’s cross proved decisive.

“Inter caused us problems in the first half, opening up with Joao Mario and Gagliardini, so we struggled to close them down. It’s also true the biggest chances of the first half came from us giving the ball away,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

“I moved Mandzukic to the left, Paulo Dybala played much better and we had a very different performance in terms of intensity and pressure. We allowed Inter practically nothing in the second half and we had several more chances.

“Matteo Politano was putting pressure on, so I switched the full-backs to make the most of our characteristics and cover where needed, pushing on the other.

“Cancelo struggled a little with Politano in the first half, mainly the transitions. We’re working on Cancelo’s defensive approach and it must be recognised he has improved a great deal.

“I asked the lads this evening to be efficient and effective. We were only half that in the first period, but then we started to hold the ball with greater patience, were more organised and solid. After that, the quality of the players inevitably emerges.

“Cancelo did very well, I thought Dybala was excellent, but I had to introduce Douglas Costa for his pace out wide.

“We knew the championship wouldn’t end today, but we still absolutely had to avoid defeat.”

It seems whenever there is a big occasion, Mandzukic always shows up for Juventus.

“Mandzukic is one of those players who even on a bit of an off day can bring his physicality to the game and that can make the difference.

“I asked with the crosses to avoid Milan Skriniar and Joao Miranda, to work on the full-backs who were less physical than we were in those roles. It was a good cross to find Mandzukic.”

Bonucci: 'We kept Inter under control'

Leonardo Bonucci admits Juventus “were fortunate” when Inter hit the woodwork, but overall kept the Nerazzurri under control.

The 1-0 result was ultimately decided by a Mario Mandzukic diving header on Joao Cancelo’s cross, giving the Bianconeri 43 points in the first 15 Serie A rounds.

“There are many games to be played and we must prove every time that we are ready to take the result whoever we are up against,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s a long campaign, there are many matches to be played in Europe too, but this victory once again lets us realise we are strong and can beat anyone.”

Last season’s joint Capocannoniere Mauro Icardi didn’t have a single shot on goal this evening.

“Icardi is always dangerous in the box, but we worked on the line to keep them under control. We only let Roberto Gagliardini get away from us once and we were fortunate he hit the upright.

“I thought Juve played much better in the second half and deserved the victory.”

Inter fans 'shoved Juventus steward'

Dec 8, 2018

There are reports of Inter fans damaging the away section of the Juventus Stadium and even shoving a female steward during Friday's 1-0 defeat.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport among other sources, there were seats torn up, the toilets damaged and a staff member at the Stadium struck.

The incident seemingly started when a group of Inter ultras were not allowed in to the away end due to issues with the Fan Passport and different names on their tickets.

In protest, the other ultras already present walked out, but remained in the Stadium, tearing up some of the seats and damaging the toilet facilities.

The most serious part of the allegations is that a female steward was shoved over.

It is reported a man was caught on CCTV cameras pushing the steward and police have identified him.

Dec 11, 2018

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri reveals Cristiano Ronaldo will start against Young Boys, but Giorgio Chiellini won’t play on the synthetic surface.

The Bianconeri need a win in Switzerland tomorrow to be sure of first place in their Champions League group, and the tactician won’t be making wholesale changes.

“It’s more important than Inter because we’re playing for first place, and more difficult because we’re playing a team who have created a lot at home,” Allegri warned in his pre-match Press conference.

“It’s very important for us to finish first. As for the changes, [Daniele] Rugani will play instead of Chiellini, alongside Bonucci.

“[Rodrigo] Bentancur will play because he’s suspended against Torino. Up-front Ronaldo will play, then I need to decide on the rest. Alex Sandro is with us, but it’s hard to see him playing.

“We have to play a serious game and Juventus will do that because this is a responsible squad which knows the importance of the game.

“A negative result would have a bad effect on us and we can’t afford that because we play Torino afterward, and that’s a derby in which we need to get a result.

“We cannot think this will be easy, if you go into games without the proper respect for the opponent, even a technically inferior one, then you’ll leave with broken bones.

“It’ll be cold in the evening, and we’ll be playing on a synthetic surface.”

Would Ronaldo have been rested if the game wasn’t decisive for first place?

“Yes, definitely. Like a lot of others. I’m keeping Chiellini out because the synthetic pitches hurt him - I told him not to walk on it too much!

“There are no excuses tomorrow though, we need to bring a victory home.

“A two man-midfield? I’ve got two-and-a-half, playing with three is almost impossible. Matuidi will start from the bench, Bentancur will play and I think I’ll give Emre Can a few minutes.

“The only other one is [Miralem] Pjanic, who I think will play.

“Chiellini is definitely out because of the pitch, then Alex Sandro is available but putting him on the synthetic surface right away seemed risky, so he’ll be ready for Saturday.”

Max Allegri believes his Juventus are “among the favourites” for the Champions League, and hopes Inter and Napoli qualify tonight.

The Bianconeri have been to the final twice under the Tuscan Coach, but haven’t lifted the trophy since 1996.

“Juventus are among the favourites, but then avoiding the teams who finish first is very important,” Allegri said ahead of tomorrow’s match with Young Boys.

“There’s Barcelona, Manchester City, Real Madrid, perhaps Paris Saint-Germain… Then we hope all the Italians go through tonight.

“That doesn’t mean we’ll have an easy Last 16, but certainly a less tough one.

“It’s certainly more competitive [this year], I think the level is always rising. There year there are many teams that can get to the end: Juve, Barcelona, PSG, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Liverpool…

“This year the Last 16 will only be less tough if we finish first, otherwise we’ll have a tie against one of these teams.

“From the quarter-finals onward it’ll be a really difficult Champions League, and it’ll be impossible to find a soft quarter-final or semi-final.”

Dec 11, 2018

Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny isn’t fazed by Young Boys’ synthetic pitch - “you’d play these great Champions League evenings on sand”.

The Swiss champions have a synthetic surface, and Bianconeri captain Giorgio Chiellini won’t play on it for fear of injury.

“It changes things a little, because it’s always faster on a synthetic pitch,” Szczesny said, sitting alongside Max Allegri in the pre-match Press conference.

“But you’d play these great Champions League evenings on sand, so it doesn’t make much difference.

“We expect a difficult game against a team that has created a lot at home. We’ll therefore need to be attentive in defence.

“Finishing top is crucial, we’ve deserved it up to now and we need to confirm it tomorrow. Then we can await the draw with more tranquility.”

Szczesny made a stunning save in the last Champions League game, somehow getting a hand to Mouctar Diakhaby’s header from a Valencia corner.

“It was an important save in an important moment, but that’s what I have to do. I go onto the pitch to make that kind of save.

“Sometimes I can’t, but when I do it’s always a nice moment.”

Alex Sandro returns to the Juventus squad to face Young Boys, but Sami Khedira and Medhi Benatia are out.

The Bianconeri will seal top spot in their Champions League group with a win in Switzerland tomorrow, and are already guaranteed a place in the Last 16.

This afternoon Massimiliano Allegri has named his squad, with left-back Alex Sandro returning after injury.

Khedira and Benatia won’t make the trip to Bern, but other than that Allegri has almost a full squad.

Buffon: ‘No-one wants to play Juventus’

Dec 12, 2018

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was disappointed to see Napoli and Inter exit the Champions League and admits “no-one wants to play” Juventus.

PSG qualified for the Last 16 with a win over Red Star in Belgrade last night, but Napoli’s defeat at Anfield knocked them out.

The Nerazzurri were also eliminated after failing to beat Tottenham Hotspur, and Buffon evaluated the Italian sides in an interview with Sky.

“I’d have been so pleased to see Napoli and Inter qualify for the next round, both for patriotic pride and because they had the chance,” the legendary goalkeeper said.

“Napoli had a phenomenal group and Inter just needed a win against PSV. And also I’d have had more chance of returning to Italy in the draw.

“Are Juventus the strongest team so far? Yes, because they’re the team who have given very strong and precise indications, though we’re certainly not finding that out this year.

“In recent years I think we were one of the strongest teams in terms of mentality, togetherness and solidity.

“When you add Cristiano Ronaldo to that it’s clear Juve are the team no-one wants to play.”

Juventus move to 4-4-2 with Federico Bernardeschi and Douglas Costa flanking Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Mandzukic against Young Boys.

It kicks off at the Stade de Suisse at 20.00 GMT.

The Bianconeri need a victory to be sure of first place in the Champions League group, as if they fail to win and Manchester United beat Valencia, there will be a last-minute switch at the top.

Young Boys are already sure they’ll finish fourth and therefore have nothing to play for.

Midfielder Sekou Sanogo is suspended, with Jordan Lotomba and Miralem Sulejmani injured.

Steve van Bergen, who was teammates with a young Paulo Dybala at Palermo, is not 100 per cent fit, but Djibril Sow is passed ready to start.

Juventus miss Andrea Barzagli, Sami Khedira and Moise Kean, while Alex Sandro is only on the bench.

Paulo Dybala scored a hat-trick when Juve beat Young Boys in Turin, but he is rested along with Giorgio Chiellini and Joao Cancelo.

Juan Cuadrado is given the nod as a very attack-minded right-back, with Bernardeschi and Douglas Costa out wide.

Cristiano Ronaldo partners Mario Mandzukic in a more central role.

Young Boys: Wolfli; Mbabu, Camara, Benito, Garcia; Sow, Lauper, Aebischer; Moumi Ngamaleu, Hoarau, Fassnacht

Young Boys bench: Von Ballmoos, Bertone, Assale, Nsame, Schick, Wuthrich, Seydoux

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, Rugani, Bonucci, De Sciglio; Bernardeschi, Bentancur, Pjanic, Douglas Costa; Ronaldo, Mandzukic

Juventus bench: Perin, Chiellini, Dybala, Alex Sandro, Matuidi, Kean
