Blaise Matuidi had a goal disallowed, Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrobatic volley was off target and Hakan Calhanoglu forced a save, as Juventus and Milan are 0-0 midway through the Supercoppa.

The Super Cup is traditionally between the Scudetto winners and Coppa Italia holders, but as Juve did the Double last year, they faced the losing Coppa Finalists Milan in Jeddah. These were the two most successful clubs in the history of the competition on seven wins apiece.

The build-up was dominated by Gonzalo Higuain, not because he was facing his parent club, but as he was on the verge of a transfer to Chelsea. He was expected to start, but was eventually benched, officially because of a ‘fever.’ Suso was suspended with Lucas Biglia, Jack Bonaventura and Mattia Caldara injured, while Juve missed Mario Mandzukic, Joao Cancelo, Andrea Barzagli and Medhi Benatia.

Douglas Costa’s curler flashed just wide and Joao Cancelo, returning from injury, skimmed the far post with his angled drive. Wojciech Szczesny got away with misjudging a corner, as Samu Castillejo fired over the bar, while Juve wasted a promising counter-attack with Giorgio Chiellini.

Blaise Matuidi thought he had opened the scoring on 34 minutes, but was flagged just offside as he pounced on a through ball to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrobatic mid-air volley from a Douglas Costa cross bounced off the ground to graze the crossbar with Donnarumma rooted to the spot.

At the other end, Szczesny needed a tough save to deny Calhanoglu’s angled drive after promising work from Lucas Paquetá.

Juventus 0-0 Milan (Half-Time)

Milan: G Donnarumma; Calabria, Zapata, Romagnoli, Rodriguez; Kessié, Bakayoko, Paquetá; Castillejo, Cutrone, Calhanoglu

Juventus have become the first club to win the Supercoppa eight times, as Cristiano Ronaldo’s header was decisive, but Milan were furious about two refereeing decisions.

Straight after the restart, Milan again created havoc in the Juve box, as a misplaced Miralem Pjanic pass ricocheted into the path of Cutrone, who spun round and blasted it on to the crossbar with his weaker left foot.

Juve finally got their first shot on target at the 59th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo cutting inside Davide Calabria for a powerful strike to sting Donnarumma’s gloves at the near post.

It was a warning, as CR7 broke the deadlock moments later. He sprung the offside trap on a floated Pjanic ball over the top for a glancing header past Donnarumma. Ricardo Rodriguez kept him level and Alessio Romagnoli didn’t jump to intercept the assist.

Dybala had the ball in the net after a give-and-go with Matuidi, but the Frenchman had wandered offside during the build-up and it was disallowed.

Despite failing to start because of a fever, Higuain was introduced for the final 20 minutes along with Fabio Borini. However, Franck Kessie was sent off after a VAR review for his stamp on Emre Can’s ankle, as Luca Banti had originally only booked the Milan midfielder.

Donnarumma was alert to push a deflected Alex Sandro cross on to the upright, but Calabria was booked and will also be suspended against Genoa in Serie A on Monday.

Milan were furious when Emre Can appeared to clatter into the back of Andrea Conti from six yards, but the referee waved play on and the VAR booth did not consider it worthy of a review.

Cristiano Ronaldo was “happy to have scored the winning goal and start 2019 with my first Juventus trophy” after deciding the Supercoppa against Milan.

His header was the only goal of the game in Jeddah, which saw Franck Kessie sent off for a stamp on Emre Can.

“It was a very difficult match, it’s very warm and hard to play in these conditions,” he told Rai Sport.

“We played well, created a lot of chances and obviously I am happy to have scored the winning goal.

“I am happy, it was my intention to start 2019 with a trophy, I have my first title with Juve and I am very happy!

“It is only the start, we take it one step at a time. We’ve got this Cup, now we must keep working hard to achieve the next trophy.

“Serie A is always Juve’s principle objective, we are top of the table, but it’s a very long tournament and it’s going to be tough, so we need to keep working.

“I dedicate the goal to the team, my family, friends and everyone around the world who loves Juve and loves Cristiano.”

Allegri: 'Juve got CR7 to be decisive'

Max Allegri admits Juventus “signed Cristiano Ronaldo because he is decisive and scores big goals” after the Supercoppa victory over Milan.

The trophy was decided by the Ballon d’Or winner’s glancing header, while Franck Kessie then saw red.

“It was an entertaining game with several chances. We were up against a good Milan that caused us problems, but after the red card we could’ve done better to score a second goal.

“It was very warm and tiring, but we deserved to bring home the trophy thanks to a balanced approach,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“We signed Cristiano Ronaldo because he is decisive and scores big goals, but the whole team put in a good performance.

“There were a few too many counter-attacks, as we should’ve had more moves like the Paulo Dybala disallowed goal. Instead, we kept trying to move it around too quickly and allowed Milan some counters, forcing us to sprint back.

“Milan played well, we made a few too many mistakes in our passing. It was a good opening half-hour, but Milan were eager and we had chances where we could’ve made it 2-0, but were a bit hasty in the final ball.”

Douglas Costa limped off in the final minutes, but Allegri assured there is nothing to worry about.

“It was just cramp. I admire above all the spirit and professionalism of this team, as those who came off the bench even if only for a few minutes had the right attitude and determination to make a difference. That’s what we need going forward this season.

“Dybala had a good game between the lines, worked hard to help the team and could perhaps have had more shots on goal, but was closed down by the defenders.”

Pjanic takes swipe at Milan

Miralem Pjanic claims Juventus’ Supercoppa success ‘clears up any doubts over whether the champions of Italy were better than the Coppa Italia winners.’

Pjanic helped Juve beat Milan 1-0 in Jeddah on Wednesday, and the midfielder could not resist taking a dig at his side’s opponents, given the Rossoneri only qualified through losing to the Old Lady in last season’s Coppa Italia Final.

“This Final clears up any doubts over whether the champions of Italy were better than the Coppa Italia winners,” he wrote on Instagram.

However, the midfielder’s yellow card means he will miss the Bianconeri’s next match against Chievo on Monday.

Allegri: 'Juve must finish opponents'

Max Allegri told Juventus not to “rest on our laurels” as they host bottom of the table Chievo. “When opponents are clinging on, you need to finish them.”

It kicks off on Monday at 19.30 GMT - 20.30 CET.

“It’s Juventus-Chievo and we need to take it very seriously indeed,” warned the Coach in his Press conference.

“Since Mimmo Di Carlo has taken over, they’ve managed five draws, a victory and just one defeat. They can believe in and fight for Serie A safety to the very end.

“We must learn to kill games off, because when the opponents are clinging on, you need to finish them. We mustn’t give them the opportunity to get back into it. This squad has the DNA of champions and that means we must work every day to get better, not rest on our laurels.”

The Bianconeri beat Milan 1-0 in Jeddah on Wednesday to win the Supercoppa, their first trophy of the campaign.

“Rodrigo Bentancur got a knock in Jeddah and is rested. We’ll try to have Mario Mandzukic back against Lazio, while Andrea Barzagli and Medhi Benatia are working towards recovery. Juan Cuadrado is a long way off.

“Miralem Pjanic has a bruised calf muscle, but he’s suspended anyway, so has a week to recover. I believe our big January signing will be Sami Khedira, because he hasn’t been able to contribute much so far this season due to injuries.

“I can confirm we’ll make a few changes tomorrow, so Mattia De Sciglio will be on the right, Alex Sandro on the left, with Mattia Perin in goal. Daniele Rugani will play with either Giorgio Chiellini or Leonardo Bonucci in defence. Federico Bernardeschi will start upfront.”

Allegri had said Leonardo Spinazzola would stay, but opened up the door to a potential loan for Bologna.

“Spinazzola will only leave if we have a suitable replacement.”

Juventus squad for Chievo: Szczesny, Perin, Pinsoglio; De Sciglio, Chiellini, Alex Sandro, Bonucci, Cancelo, Rugani, Spinazzola; Khedira, Matuidi, Emre Can, Bentancur; Ronaldo, Dybala, Douglas Costa, Kean, Bernardeschi

Douglas Costa and Emre Can have given Juventus the half-time lead over Chievo, although Riccardo Meggiorini forced a save.

It was first against last in Turin, as Juve fresh from the Supercoppa victory over Milan midweek had to do without Mario Mandzukic, Juan Cuadrado, Andrea Barzagli, Medhi Benatia and suspended Miralem Pjanic, while Sami Khedira had a knock to the knee, Leonardo Bonucci and Wojciech Szczesny were rested. Chievo ended 2018 with their first win of the season and would be in front of Frosinone if not for the three-point penalty. They’d lost just one of the last eight games going into the Allianz Juventus Stadium, holding Napoli, Lazio and Inter.

The first save of the game was by Mattia Perin, his gloves stung by Riccardo Meggiorini at the near post, but Douglas Costa broke the deadlock with a ferocious solo strike. The Brazilian surged forward through the middle and smacked a left-foot finish into the near bottom corner from outside the box.

Federico Bernardeschi went on a powerful run from midfield past three defenders, eventually blocked off at the by-line by Luca Rossettini after trying to set up Ronaldo.

The ex-Fiorentina forward went close again with a deflected snapshot, as Stefano Sorrentino had to readjust and parry with his legs. Sergio Pellissier fired over on the half-volley, but Juventus doubled their lead in first half stoppages.

Paulo Dybala dribbled among a crowd of yellow jerseys and rolled across for Emre Can to take one touch and stroke his finish into the far bottom corner from 14 yards.

Juventus 2-0 Chievo (Half-Time)

Douglas Costa 13 (J), Emre Can 45 (J)

Juventus: Perin; De Sciglio, Rugani, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Bernardeschi, Emre Can, Matuidi, Douglas Costa; Dybala, Cristiano Ronaldo

Chievo: Sorrentino; Tomovic, Bani, Rossettini, Depaoli; Kiyine, Radovanovic, Hetemaj, Kiyine; Giaccherini; Meggiorini, Pellissier

Chievo deny CR7, but not Juventus

Chievo capitulated to Douglas Costa, Emre Can and Daniele Rugani goals for Juventus, but Stefano Sorrentino parried Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty.

The Flying Donkeys have now lost 13 of their last 14 Serie A meetings with Juventus, drawing 1-1 in September 2015.

Paulo Dybala dribbled among a crowd of yellow jerseys and nutmegged Ivan Radovanovic with his pass for Emre Can to take one touch and stroke his finish into the far bottom corner from 14 yards. It was the German international’s debut goal in a Juve jersey.

Straight after the restart, Sorrentino performed a spectacular reaction save on Alex Sandro’s header from point-blank range, as Douglas Costa’s cross found him at the back post.

Juventus were awarded a penalty when Mattia Bani charged down a Douglas Costa shot with his hand from close range. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up ready for his 15th Serie A goal, but did not count on Stefano Sorrentino, who turns 40 in March, palming the spot-kick round the post. The pair had clashed in Week 1 when Ronaldo accidentally knocked the goalkeeper unconscious.

Riccardo Meggiorini didn’t get enough power to his free header, allowing Perin to smother, while the Juve ‘keeper also parried a powerful Rossettini strike.

Ronaldo scuffed two promising opportunities off target following good work from Emre Can and Dybala, but Sorrentino performed another fine save on Bernardeschi’s splendid volley from the D.

The Bianconeri did get a third goal, but it was from centre-back Rugani with a free header from six yards on Bernardeschi’s free kick.

Juventus: Perin; De Sciglio, Rugani, Chiellini, Alex Sandro (Kean 89); Bernardeschi (Spinazzola 86), Emre Can, Matuidi, Douglas Costa (Bentancur 75); Dybala, Cristiano Ronaldo

Chievo: Sorrentino; Tomovic, Bani, Rossettini, Depaoli (Jaroszynski 66); Kiyine, Radovanovic, Hetemaj (Vignato 61), Kiyine; Giaccherini; Meggiorini, Pellissier (Stepinski 64)

Allegri: Dybala, Emre Can, Higuain...

Max Allegri backed Paulo Dybala to become ‘truly great’, urged Emre Can to ‘use the ball quicker’ and hinted Milan did not use Gonzalo Higuain correctly.

“The team had a good game, but it wasn’t easy because we came into it from two challenging matches,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia after Juventus’ 3-0 win against Chievo on Monday.

“There could’ve been a bit of carelessness, but the lads showed quality and maturity. We risked conceding just once.

“It’s a nice win and now we move on. Dybala? Seeing him play like he did is a pleasure. Maybe he’ll be disappointed because he didn’t score, but he’ll become a truly great player.

“He can’t be as clear-headed if he plays deeper and gets a bit disheartened, so he must stay on this path.

“Ronaldo? I never watch penalties, although he missed one in the morning too. Khedira? He took a blow to the knee and we’ll assess him in the next few hours.

“Emre Can? He had a good game, but he must use the ball quicker. Alex Sandro? He’s playing like a real player this season.

“It’s not that he didn’t last season, but he showed what he could do in his first season. On the other side we have Cancelo and De Sciglio with different characteristics.

“Boateng at Barcelona? I played him as a No 10 at Milan, but in practice it was he who played as our striker.

“Higuain at Chelsea? I don’t know yet. I had him for two years and it went well but if you don’t find the right chemistry, unfortunately you can’t give your best.”

Emre Can has warned Juventus’ rivals that his side ‘can improve a lot’ after their 3-0 win against Chievo in Serie A on Monday.

“The most important thing was that we won the game. We scored three goals, had chances to score more, but we won and I’m pleased,” the Germany international, who scored the Bianconeri’s second goal, told Sky Sport Italia.

“We wanted to play, so we moved the ball right to left, back and forward until we scored. We want to play more football like that and it was good tonight.

“We can improve in a lot of situations, when we press high, but we work for that every day in training. Of course, we can improve a lot.”

Juventus injury concerns for Lazio

Juventus could be without Miralem Pjanic, Sami Khedira and Joao Cancelo for Sunday’s match with Lazio.

A statement from the Bianconeri was released after today’s training session.

Pjanic is available again after missing the victory over Chievo due to suspension, but is still training separately from the team with a bruised left calf muscle.

Khedira was expected to start that match at the Bentegodi, but pulled out at the last minute with a knock to the knee.

The German is also not yet working with the full squad, but neither is Cancelo, who has a left calf issue.

It remains to be seen if any of them will recover in time to start Sunday’s Serie A clash.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo was given a rare day off from training.

He was in Madrid yesterday to settle his outstanding tax bill with a fine.

Allegri mulls midfield against Lazio.

'Benatia asked to leave Juve'

Jan 26, 2019

Max Allegri prepares for a “complicated” encounter with Lazio and explains his midfield options amid an injury crisis. “Emre Can has a lot that needs improving.”

It kicks off on Sunday at 19.30 GMT - 20.30 CET.

“This is always a complicated fixture for us. Lazio will try to beat a big club for the first time this season and we hope they don’t manage it against us,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Lazio are a very physical side, with good technique. Like Juve, they scored many goals from set plays and above all have plenty of shots on target in their home games.

“They’ll be eager to make up for the defeat to Napoli, whereas we must find our consistency. There’s a very long way to go for the Scudetto and every victory is just one more step towards that final goal.

“It’s always wonderful to play at the Stadio Olimpico, so we are called upon to put in a great performance in every way.”

There are issues to deal with, as Allegri has to reshuffle his Bianconeri side due to injuries, particularly in midfield.

“Joao Cancelo is available again, although he’ll probably only be an option off the bench. Mario Mandzukic and perhaps Sami Khedira will come back against Parma. Miralem Pjanic has been training since Monday.

“We can either play with two in midfield or all three. If we play with three, it’s Blaise Matuidi, Emre Can and Rodrigo Bentancur, then one from Douglas Costa and Federico Bernardeschi.

“Let’s not forget on Wednesday we’ve got a knockout Coppa Italia match in Bergamo against an Atalanta side that has always caused problems.

“My only doubt right now is whether to use two or three midfielders.”

Allegri explained the differences between the players at his disposal.

“Emre Can has a lot that needs improving, he knows that, in the timing of his moves in front of the defence. So does Bentancur. Pjanic is quicker at moving the ball around, whereas they have longer pauses, so it makes the whole team move more slowly.

“It’s only an issue of training, because Emre Can gives a lot of coverage to the defence and has improved in terms of passing intuition. He is young, like Bentancur, and they have time to learn.”

Max Allegri confirmed Medhi Benatia requested a transfer and Juventus chose Martin Caceres because he is “ready,” but the Coach shrugged off Paul Pogba questions.

This morning, Martin Caceres underwent his medical ahead of a €600,000 transfer from Lazio, while Medhi Benatia is on his way to Qatar for Al-Duhail.

“Benatia asked to leave, he made a different choice to our intentions and the club gave him what he wanted,” said Allegri in his Press conference.

“There was no point keeping a player who didn’t want to be here. In any case, Benatia had some good years at Juventus and I too am sad he is leaving, but I cannot get inside his head and change his mind for him. He made this decision and that’s it.

“Along with the club, we evaluated other profiles that we could bring to Juventus and were fortunate that Caceres accepted. I’m very happy.

“This is his third stint here, so Martin knows the club, is reliable and completes an already strong defensive unit. In about three or four weeks, we’ll have Andrea Barzagli back too, so that’ll be it.

“Caceres is a player who I know and in my view he can give a great deal to Juventus. It wouldn’t have been wise to bring players in with four months left of the season, waiting for them to learn the language, check their fitness levels, etc. It would’ve taken too long. Martin is ready to go.”

With that in mind, and the reunion with Leonardo Bonucci after his stint at Milan, Allegri was asked if there could be a return to Turin for Pogba from Manchester United as well.

“You have remarkable imagination! I think it’ll be very difficult to see Pogba return to Juventus.”

Lazio - Juventus MATCH PREVIEW

Dx6SMhvWsAAmdJa.jpg:large

https://www.football-italia.net/SerieA/match/preview/125269

Jan 26, 2019

Juventus travel to Lazio on Sunday and both teams are forced to reshuffle amid bans and injuries.

However, Lazio are in desperate need of a win themselves, as last week’s 2-1 loss to Napoli along with other results saw them slip to sixth and subsequently leapfrogged by Roma in the race for fourth. A positive result in this clash would do wonders for Le Aquile and their quest for a return to Champions League football.

However, it won’t come easy. Lazio have not defeated La Vecchia Signora at the Stadio Olimpico n a winless run dating back almost six years. Their last victory against Juve here came in the Coppa Italia - a 2-1 win in January 2013 thanks to a Sergio Floccari stoppage-time winner.

Adding to their woes, they will have to settle for a makeshift defence, as they are missing the injured Luiz Felipe and suspended Francesco Acerbi - after the latter was sent off in last week’s loss following his second yellow card. Adam Marusic also completes the two-match ban, as he was sent off in Lazio’s 1-1 draw against Torino before the winter break.

It means Wallace should take the central role in a three-man defence, while Joaquin Correa could support Ciro Immobile, giving Luis Alberto a slightly deeper starting position.

Meanwhile, Juventus are flying high. They are still undefeated in the league with 18 wins and just two draws so far. They have a nine-point cushion at the top of Serie A and this could be extended on Sunday with Napoli’s tricky trip to Milan set to be played 24 hours earlier.

However, Max Allegri has an injury crisis of his own. Juan Cuadrado, Andrea Barzagli, Mario Mandzukic, Medhi Benatia, Joao Cancelo, Sami Khedira and Miralem Pjanic are all out of action. Therefore, Emre Can and Rodrigo Bentancur are set to start in the middle of the park alongside Blaise Matuidi, while Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to be flanked by Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa.

This match is set to be an intriguing one. Despite their less-than-pleasant track record against Juve, Lazio are more than capable of challenging them on Sunday in a game where the Bianconeri are so injury-hit.

Keep an eye on: Emre Can (Juventus) - Juventus midfielder Emre Can scored his first goal for his new club last weekend in their 3-0 rout of Chievo and has finally had an injury free run for the first time in Black and White so far. He was arguably the best player on the park last weekend with a well-rounded performance and he is slowly showing that he is a huge asset to the Bianconeri.

Form Guide: Lazio (L D W W L) Juventus (W W D W W)

Last season: Lazio 0-1 Juventus

Stat fact: Lazio have only scored once in their last nine Serie A home games against Juventus, drawing one and losing eight.

Top tip: Juventus to win and Cristiano Ronaldo to score.

Lazio (probable): Strakosha; Bastos, Wallace, Radu; Parolo, Leiva, Milinkovic-Savic, Lulic; Luis Alberto; Immobile, Correa

Suspended: Luiz Felipe, Acerbi

Juventus (probable): Szczesny; De Sciglio, Bonucci, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Bentancur, Emre Can, Matuidi; Dybala, Ronaldo, Douglas Costa

Lazio look to Joaquin Correa and Ciro Immobile, while Juventus are forced to revamp their midfield amid an injury crisis.

It kicks off at 19.30 GMT - 20.30 CET at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The Aquile have to make some changes in defence, as Luiz Felipe is on the treatment table, with Francesco Acerbi and Adam Marusic suspended.

Wallace and Bastos therefore step in with more experienced Stefan Radu.

This means Marco Parolo is moved out to the right wing, with Luis Alberto and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic given the chance to push forward from midfield in support of Correa and Immobile.

Juventus have the opportunity to break further away from Napoli, who were held to a 0-0 draw by Milan, but also a lengthy injury list to deal with.

Mario Mandzukic, Miralem Pjanic, Sami Khedira, Juan Cuadrado and Andrea Barzagli are all out of action, while Medhi Benatia is on his way to Qatar in order to join Al-Duhail.

Martin Caceres had his medical yesterday, ready to complete a €600,000 transfer from Lazio, but the paperwork hasn’t come through yet.

Max Allegri had the option of a 4-4-2 formation, but is risking it with all three available midfielders in the starting XI of a 4-3-3.

Giorgio Chiellini is rested in favour of Daniele Rugani, while Douglas Costa gets the nod ahead of Federico Bernardeschi in the trident attack.

Paulo Dybala has not found the net in eight Serie A games, so hopes to break that drought against Lazio, his favourite victims.

La Joya has already put 10 career goals past Lazio in just 10 previous meetings.

Lazio: Strakosha; Bastos, Wallace, Radu; Parolo, Luis Alberto, Leiva, Milinkovic-Savic, Lulic; Correa, Immobile

Lazio bench: Proto, Guerrieri, Silva, Durmisi, Berisha, Cataldi, Badelj, Murgia, Neto, Caicedo

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Bonucci, Rugani, Alex Sandro; Emre Can, Matuidi, Bentancur; Douglas Costa, Dybala, Ronaldo

Juventus bench: Pinsoglio, Perin, Chiellini, Cancelo, Spinazzola, Fagioli, Kean, Bernardeschi

Lazio are dominating Juventus, including a desperate Wojciech Szczesny save and Daniele Rugani goal-line clearance, but it’s still goalless at the break.

Both Coaches were forced into changes, as Francesco Acerbi and Adam Marusic were suspended with Luiz Felipe injured, so Marco Parolo was rerouted to the right wing. The Bianconeri missed Miralem Pjanic, Mario Mandzukic, Sami Khedira, Juan Cuadrado, Andrea Barzagli and wantaway Medhi Benatia.

Juve struggled to get out of their half in the opening stages, as Joaquin Correa dribbled past Emre Can and Leonardo Bonucci to force a Daniele Rugani interception on the pull-back, then Wallace completely misjudged a free header from six yards.

Emre Can got away with an error, as Luis Alberto’s snapshot was beaten away by Wojciech Szczesny, then Lucas Leiva’s crucial tackle stopped Douglas Costa on the counter.

Wallace slipped over as he went to clear and kicked the ball on to his own arm, but the referee waved away penalty appeals, as it was clearly not intentional.

It was all Lazio and Szczesny performed a spectacular one-handed save on the powerful Parolo strike from just inside the box.

Leonardo Bonucci played through the pain of an ankle knock for 20 minutes, but eventually made way for Giorgio Chiellini.

Immobile thought he’d finally opened the scoring on 43 minutes when flicking the ball over the onrushing Szczesny, but Daniele Rugani performed a crucial goal-line clearance.

Lazio 0-0 Juventus (Half-Time)

Lazio: Strakosha; Bastos, Wallace, Radu; Parolo, Luis Alberto, Leiva, Milinkovic-Savic, Lulic; Correa, Immobile

Lazio dominated the match for long periods and took the lead, but Joao Cancelo scored and then earned a penalty to give Juventus victory and an 11-point lead over Napoli.

Opta noted it was the first time since they started collecting data in 2004-05 that Juventus had failed to even attempt a shot in the first half of a Serie A game.

Douglas Costa’s ball whipped across the face of goal with Ronaldo just unable to make contact, but the teams were much more stretched out in the second half with a series of counter-attacks.

The deadlock was finally broken by Lazio on their eighth corner of the match, as the Luis Alberto set play seemed to take a deflection and Emre Can accidentally nodded it into his own net from close range. The former Liverpool midfielder seemed almost frightened of the ball and had his eyes closed as it hit him.

It should’ve been 2-0 moments later, as Immobile went clear and Szczesny had gone to ground, but he curled over an open goal. Luis Alberto then saw his strike deflected inches past the near top corner off Rodrigo Bentancur.

However, Juve’s greatest strength is in their depth and it was confirmed here again. Federico Bernardeschi burst past Bastos down the left, pulled back for Dybala’s shot parried by Strakosha into the path of substitute Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese full-back kept his cool to finish off the rebound from nine yards. He’d only been on the pitch for four minutes.

It was wide open with both sides trying to win it with Correa and Cancelo, but the referee pointed to the spot when Senad Lulic foolishly held Cancelo back by the jersey as he waited for a Dybala cross. Cristiano Ronaldo, whose penalty was saved last week against Chievo, smashed this one into the roof of the net.

It was almost 3-1 moments later, as Cancelo went clear on goal and was over-altruistic in his attempt to roll it across for Bernardeschi.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic had the chance to equalise with the last kick of the game, but turned his free kick over the bar.

Lazio: Strakosha; Bastos (Pedro Neto 90), Wallace, Radu; Parolo, Luis Alberto (Berisha 81), Leiva, Milinkovic-Savic, Lulic; Correa, Immobile (Caicedo 83)

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Bonucci (Chiellini 40), Rugani, Alex Sandro; Emre Can, Matuidi (Bernardeschi 60), Bentancur; Douglas Costa (Cancelo 70), Dybala, Ronaldo

Allegri: 'I was wrong on Emre Can'

https://www.football-italia.net/133866/allegri-i-was-wrong-emre-can

Jan 27, 2019

Max Allegri took the blame for the poor Juventus performance against Lazio, even though they won 2-1. “I put Emre Can in a difficult position.”

Bianconeri were pinned back for an hour and went behind through an Emre Can own goal, but Joao Cancelo came off the bench and changed the game with an equaliser and earning the Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.

“We didn’t do well for the first hour, but the last half-hour I think did better. At half-time, I told the lads to pass it more cleanly, not make so many hasty mistakes,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The introduction of Federico Bernardeschi and Cancelo made us more organised. It was a difficult match, but I’ve been at Juventus for five years and have never had an easy ride at the Olimpico against Lazio, so it wasn’t a surprise.

“It’s my responsibility, as I tried to play with Emre Can in front of the defence and that was a mistake. He doesn’t have the right timing yet, so I put him in a very difficult position. I put Bentancur there instead and it went better.

“Those who come off the bench are essential. I was sad to leave Bernardeschi out initially, but we have a big game coming up against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday.

“The Lazio pressing game caused us problems, especially because our own passing was so misplaced. It felt like we were all wearing different jerseys in the first half, because we couldn’t pass to a teammate. We adjusted some things and were more orderly, so finished the game on a high.

“We knew it was important to win after Napoli drew with Milan. I told the lads a win would be a step forward, even if we didn’t play that well.”

Giorgio Chiellini said Wojciech Szczesny “kept us afloat for an hour” and Allegri agreed.

“Szczesny is doing very well, but we knew he was a great goalkeeper. I think the biggest leap forward he has made is in his focus over 90 minutes and confidence.

“Leonardo Bonucci’s ankle is swollen, so we’ll see, but we’ve got Martin Caceres coming in. Miralem Pjanic will be back midweek.”

Chiellini: 'Worst Juve of the season'

Giorgio Chiellini admits “for 60 minutes it was the worst Juventus performance of the season, but we have players who make the difference” against Lazio.

The Bianconeri were largely dominated and didn’t have a single shot in the first half, going behind to an Emre Can own goal.

However, substitute Joao Cancelo scored the equaliser and then earned the penalty converted by Cristiano Ronaldo for a 2-1 win.

“For 55-60 minutes it was certainly the worst Juventus performance of the season. Paradoxically, after their goal we found the mental energy more than the physical one to turn it around,” Chiellini told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ve got players who make the difference. Wojciech Szczesny kept us afloat for an hour, then we managed to fight back and win the game. It has to help us mature, because we have another big game coming up on Wednesday in the Coppa Italia with Atalanta.

“We’ll see the real Juventus from February 20, but it’s important to get the results before that too. We knew it would be tough against Lazio, as it always is.

“March 3 will be a crucial date, there’s no denying it, and if we reach that with this advantage, it’ll be a great situation.”

Allegri: Juve not CL favourites

Max Allegri insists Juventus are not Champions League favourites but assures Leonardo Bonucci’s injury is ‘less serious’ than they first feared.

Bonucci is facing a month out with an ankle injury, potentially ruling him out of Juve’s Champions League last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid.

“Pjanic and Khedira are available, maybe Mandzukic too,” Allegri said at a Press conference for Wednesday’s Coppa Italia quarter-final against Atalanta.

“Barzagli, Cuadrado and Bonucci won’t be there. For Bonucci, the injury is less serious than first thought. Caceres, if everything goes smoothly, will be available tomorrow.

“Chiellini, Rugani and Cancelo will play, but I still have to decide who plays on the left and assess the rest, given we play again on Saturday night.

“Matuidi could play. Regarding injuries, you can’t reason with fear: you can’t know what happens. You accept the unexpected and move on.

“Will Ronaldo play? I’ll talk to him today. He’s having an excellent year on a physical level, with so much intensity.

“We’ll then have a bit of a breather, even if this is our most important week so far, as the following two weeks give us more time to recover.

“Tomorrow Szczesny will play, Perin will on Saturday. Dybala? He had chances on Sunday night and gives us a big hand in terms of sacrifice and build-up play.

“Football is unpredictable, as was the case in Rome. We played badly at the start but scored when we were at our best.

“Away from home? We’ll play where we’re told to play. We’re playing lots of games and tomorrow we have another away game: it’s practice for the Champions League too.

“It’s not written anywhere that we’re super-favourites for the Champions League. That would be madness.

“By doing that, you don’t experience the competition as it should be experienced, that is as an objective to bring home, if we play well and are lucky.

“The League is played over 38 games and you can afford to drop off in one game, but tomorrow we can’t and the same goes for the Champions League.

“It won’t be easy tomorrow. Atalanta are in good shape and they came back against Roma, creating a lot.

“There will be pressure, so whoever make the least mistakes will win. You struggle against them because they’re a physical team with a propensity to attack, but it’s also true that they concede a lot.

“We’ll have to exploit their flaws, while remaining attentive to their strengths. For our opponents it’ll be an important evening, but we must look at ourselves, conquer the semi-finals and try to play in our fifth consecutive Final.”

The two most prolific sides in Serie A face off in the Coppa Italia, as Duvan Zapata and Papu Gomez host Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Coppa quarter-final kicks off in Bergamo at 19.45 GMT - 20.45 CET and the winners go on to face Fiorentina in the two-legged semi-final.

Atalanta are on sparkling form at the moment and at the weekend fought back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Roma.

They are the most prolific side in Serie A, scoring 47 goals to Juve’s 43, and that is largely thanks to Duvan Zapata getting 14 in the last eight rounds.

The Colombia international is supported by Papu Gomez and Josip Ilicic, while Remo Freuler returns from a muscular issue in midfield.

Juventus miss Mario Mandzukic, Leonardo Bonucci, Juan Cuadrado and Andrea Barzagli, so Daniele Rugani steps in.

Miralem Pjanic is rested in favour of Sami Khedira, with Rodrigo Bentancur in the playmaker role.

Federico Bernardeschi gets the nod rather than Douglas Costa alongside Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo.

This is Max Allegri’s 250th official match on the Juventus bench and so far he has won 181, drawn 36 and lost 32.

Atalanta have not beaten Juventus at all since the 2-0 Coppa Italia result here on November 19, 2004. Home and away, it was followed by five draws and 21 defeats.

Atalanta: Berisha; Toloi, Palomino, Djimsiti; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Castagne; Gomez; Ilicic, Duvan Zapata

Atalanta bench: To follow

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Rugani, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Bentancur, Matuidi; Dybala, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardeschi

Juventus bench: Pinsoglio, Perin, Caceres, Cancelo, Spinazzola, Pjanic, Emre Can, Douglas Costa, Kean

Coppa: Atalanta end Juventus era

Atalanta have ended the Juventus dominance of the Coppa Italia with a 3-0 quarter-final triumph, including Duvan Zapata’s brace.

The Orobici will go on to face Fiorentina in the two-legged semi-finals, after the Viola humiliated Roma 7-1 today.

When these sides met here in Serie A on December 26, it ended 2-2, making Bergamo one of only two venues visited by Juve this season where they failed to win (the other being Young Boys in the Champions League). Mario Mandzukic, Leonardo Bonucci, Juan Cuadrado and Andrea Barzagli were injured, with Federico Bernardeschi given the nod rather than Douglas Costa. The Orobici were fired up, having fought back from 3-0 down to hold Roma 3-3 at the weekend.

The hosts pushed forward from the start, Giorgio Chiellini needing a last-ditch tackle on Duvan Zapata and Wojciech Szczesny getting down quickly to palm a Papu Gomez daisy-cutter round the far post.

Both teams lost key players to injury at the same time, as Josip Ilicic and Chiellini limped off at the 27th minute, moving Mattia De Sciglio to centre-back.

Substitute Joao Cancelo was caught in possession by Timothy Castagne, who surged forward and smashed it into the far bottom corner from the edge of the box to give Atalanta the lead.

Moments later, it was 2-0, as Duvan Zapata turned on the edge of the area and hit a ferocious but precise finish between Szczesny and the near post. It was his 16th competitive goal in the last 10 games. Max Allegri was absolutely furious at something in the build-up and was sent off for dissent, having thrown his coat on to the pitch.

Juve had a couple of free kicks from promising positions, but both Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala blasted them into the wall.

The Bianconeri came out fighting for the second half, with Bernardeschi pulling back from the by-line for Ronaldo, while Mario Pasalic had his finish charged down after Cancelo gifted the ball yet again.

Daniele Rugani’s header from a corner skimmed the woodwork and a corner came to Sami Khedira, who stung Etrit Berisha’s gloves with a half-volley.

Atalanta did not seem under much pressure as the clock ticked down, but when De Sciglio stumbled on a back-pass to Szczesny and Duvan Zapata pounced, the job was done.

Atalanta 3-0 Juventus

Castagne 37 (A), Duvan Zapata 39, 86 (A)

Atalanta: Berisha; Toloi, Palomino (Masiello 89), Djimsiti; Hateboer, De Roon (Gosens 91), Freuler, Castagne; Gomez; Ilicic (Pasalic 27), Duvan Zapata

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Rugani, Chiellini (Cancelo 27), Alex Sandro; Khedira (Pjanic 71), Bentancur, Matuidi; Dybala (Douglas Costa 61), Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardeschi

Allegri: 'Juve defeat in the air'

Max Allegri congratulated Atalanta for their 3-0 Coppa Italia victory and confessed “it was in the air” after a few Juventus hiccups.

It was not a good way for him to mark his 250th competitive match on the Juve bench, especially as he was sent off for dissent.

“They were right to send me off, as I was losing my temper at the time,” Allegri told Rai Sport.

The 3-0 defeat came just days after Juve fought back to scrape a 2-1 win away to Lazio in Serie A.

“This result was in the air for a while, frankly. We had players coming back from injuries, others who were out. You can recover one or two games from a negative situation, but you’re going to lose eventually.

“It’s nothing to get dramatic about, as it was just an off day. Atalanta fully deserved to go through and had more verve about them.

“It’s disappointing for us to go out, but it was mad to think Juventus could’ve won every single match this season. We really gave some goals away tonight.

“I don’t see it as any alarm bell to be worried about, because it is impossible to win every game. We wanted to win the Coppa Italia for the fifth time in a row, but Atalanta were very physical and aggressive, so congratulations to them.

“I think a lesson like this can be of use to a team. Last season, we drew with Crotone with a real struggle and then fell to Napoli. You rescue one, you rescue two, you’re going to fall eventually.

“We were simply out of steam. It can happen after such a long successful run. We’ve got Parma on Saturday and they are really strong on the counter-attack too. Mario Mandzukic will be back on Saturday, Sami Khedira and Miralem Pjanic were back tonight. There are those who kept us afloat thus far.”

Allegri: Football isn't PlayStation...

https://www.football-italia.net/134111/allegri-football-isnt-playstation

Feb 1, 2019

Juventus boss Max Allegri has insisted that ‘football isn’t PlayStation’ in response to recent criticism of his team’s performances.

The Bianconeri’s Serie A match against Parma kicks off at 19:30 GMT - 20:30 CET on Saturday – click here for a preview.

“Mandzukic is back, he’ll play with Ronaldo and one of Dybala, Bernardeschi and Douglas Costa,” Allegri said at a Press conference.

“We won’t dramatise the situation. We’ve lost just one game, where we were beaten heavily. Atalanta and Lazio were two photocopy performances, but in Rome we did well because we didn’t go 2-0 down, while things went wrong in Bergamo.

“There are times in a season when you screw up, and they’re moments to be managed with total serenity.

“There’s been criticism, but the team have picked up a few points since the season started… We apologise for losing in Bergamo, we shouldn’t have but we’ve already won a trophy, the Supercoppa, and we don’t want to let the others escape us.

“Juventus have won seven League titles in the last seven years and reached the Final in two of the last four Champions Leagues.

“When I arrived there was a fear of not being able to beat Malmo, but I thought I could reach the Final and win the Champions League with that team.

“Atletico are on Juventus’ level because they’ve played in Finals too. If we’re knocked out then we’ll accept the criticism.

“In Europe there are 6-8 teams who can reach the semi-finals, so four go out. I hear Juventus are already finalists, so if that’s the case I’ll ask UEFA to send us directly to the Final. sefz

“Football isn’t PlayStation. We must try to win like we did in previous seasons, but to do that you need luck as well as skill,.

“It’s not the case that Ronaldo has come in and we’ll win for sure. It takes respect too. We’re working to win, but then there are the others too.

“That’s why raising trophies is an extraordinary thing and not normal. Playing good football is the easiest thing in the world. The difference is being able to win by playing good football.

“On the left there will be one of Spinazzola and Alex Sandro. Bernardeschi can play left-central midfield and there will be one of Khedira and Bentancur on the right of centre.

“Perin will play in goal. Someone has to take a breather, but we have fresh players to take advantage of.

“Dybala hasn’t gone missing. He’s played a lot of games and without Mandzukic he also has fewer chances to shoot.

Chiellini has nothing serious, he needs two weeks to recover.”

Mandzukic back for Juve

Mario Mandzukic is back in Juventus’ squad for their Serie A game against Parma on Saturday, but Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci are missing.

Mandzukic was feared to be out for months with a thigh injury, but the striker has kept to his word and joins Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala, Douglas Costa, Moise Kean and Federico Bernardeschi in Juve’s attack.

However, Bonucci and Chiellini – as expected – are not included for the visit of Parma as they begin their respective recoveries from ankle and calf problems.

Replacing them is Martin Caceres, who features for the first time in a matchday squad since returning from Lazio.

Juventus squad for Parma: Szczesny, Perin, Pinsoglio; De Sciglio, Caceres, Alex Sandro, Cancelo, Rugani, Spinazzola; Pjanic, Khedira, Matuidi, Emre Can, Bentancur; Ronaldo, Dybala, Douglas Costa, Mandzukic, Kean, Bernardeschi
