Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ante Rebic, Davide Calabria and Juan Cuadrado had the best chances of the first half, but Milan and Juventus are goalless in this Coppa Italia semi-final.

The second leg of this Coppa Italia semi-final will be in Turin on March 4, so away goals could make a big difference.

Both were coming off bad Serie A defeats, so Juve transformed with Juan Cuadrado in a more advanced role and Aaron Ramsey in midfield. As for the Rossoneri, Davide Calabria stepped in for suspended Andrea Conti, but Hakan Calhanoglu retained his new trequartista position. This was the first time Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo had faced off since 2015, PSG v Real Madrid. .....

Sarri: 'Juve growth has stalled'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor sarri milan juventus coppa italia

Feb 13, 2020

Maurizio Sarri concedes “Juventus growth has stalled a little in the last three weeks and we concede avoidable goals,” but saw positives from the Coppa Italia draw with Milan.

The Bianconeri clawed a 1-1 away draw in the first leg of this Coppa Italia semi-final thanks to a late Cristiano Ronaldo penalty, awarded for Davide Calabria’s arm charging down a CR7 volley from close range.

“We did better in terms of our passing and playing out from the back, but were somewhat lacking in the final third. It’s a process and we are continuing,” Sarri told Rai Sport.

“We conceded some avoidable goals, for example today the cross was quite slow and in my view easy to defend. We were coming off a bad performance in Verona, but picked up a positive result, especially as it’s the first leg.

“At times we are too sluggish and shouldn’t have allowed Ibrahimovic into the box. Even if he didn’t touch the cross in the end, his presence was fundamental in stretching the defence. We weren’t aggressive enough in our defending.” .......

Sarri: 'Title race motivating for Juventus'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor sarri conferenza stampa pre juventus brescia

Feb 15, 2020

Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri insists “it’s motivating to be in a title race to the very end” with Inter and Lazio, so Brescia cannot be taken for granted, as he replies to Jurgen Klopp's suggestion.

It kicks off on Sunday at 14.00 GMT.

“It was clear from the very start that this would be a different type of season. I think it’s motivating to be in a title race to the very end, so I feel we have to feed from this situation,” said the coach in his press conference.

Inter and Lazio go head-to-head on Sunday evening, so will that be the decisive moment for the Scudetto?

“No single match is decisive. We just have to focus on ourselves and picking up as many points as possible.” .....

Juventus vs. Brescia match preview

Coming off another disappointing performance, Juventus returns home to try and get right against one of the worst teams in Serie A this season.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor juventus brescia

Maurizio Sarri wants you to trust the process.

Sarri, relatively positive after Juventus escaped San Siro with a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semifinals on Thursday night, talked about his team’s process. He talked about the process and how Juve are continuing along that despite the fact that these past few weeks have been about as frequent of a reminder that the adjustment to Sarri’s Juventus is on about as rocky of a road as we’ve been on all season long. This is what Sarri said about the process:

“I am not worried, as the only real worries in life are your health. It seems a normal phase to be going through, it’s unthinkable for a team to be a continual ascent. This is a sport, so much depends on the physical and psychological conditions of so many players.

“Our growth has stalled a little in the last three weeks, we concede avoidable goals. Having said that, we’ve conceded only two more than the best defence in Serie A, so it’s not that much of an issue.”

On Sunday, Juventus will host Brescia, a club that is nearly at the bottom of the table. That’s not exactly much of an improvement from the last time Juventus met up with Brescia back in September as the newly-promoted side was in the midst of losing all but of its first 13 games back in Serie A. Back then, the tone around the reigning Italian champions was about how there were small but noticeable signs about how the early stages of life with Sarri were starting to pop up.

Lest we forget, this is the same Brescia side that led 1-0 all of four minutes in against Juventus in the first matchup this season. Yeah, that game was fun ... and maybe it should have been a hint as to how things might develop over the course of the next four months. WE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN! ......

Dybala and Cuadrado break 10-man Brescia

Feb 16, 2020

Paulo Dybala’s free kick and a Juan Cuadrado effort allowed Juventus to beat 10-man Brescia, who lost their goalkeeper and saw Florian Aye sent off.

The Bianconeri were caught at the top of the table by Inter thanks to last week’s 2-1 defeat at Verona, with Lazio only one point behind, so the pressure was on to deliver.

Nonetheless, Cristiano Ronaldo was rested, with Douglas Costa, Federico Bernardeschi, Sami Khedira and Merih Demiral injured, but maintained the 4-3-3 formation with Juan Cuadrado. The Rondinelle under new coach Diego Lopez were forced into changes, as Jesse Joronen, Sandro Tonali, Romulo, Andrea Cistana, Ernesto Torregrossa and Daniele Gastaldello were injured.

To make matters even worse, Enrico Alfonso got an accidental knee to the head from Gonzalo Higuain when smothering a ball at his feet and had to come off, so third choice goalkeeper Lorenzo Antenacci made his Serie A debut just 10 minutes in.

Sarri: 'Atypical Juventus players'

162247797-87c97cf8-c44b-4049-97e7-098abd

Feb 16, 2020

Maurizio Sarri explained some of the difficulties he has getting Juventus into a specific shape, Aaron Ramsey development and why Giorgio Chiellini “substituted himself.”

The Bianconeri beat Brescia 2-0 this afternoon thanks to a Paulo Dybala free kick and Juan Cuadrado strike, although Florian Aye saw red in the first half.

“We did what we had to do. It was a decent start, once we broke the deadlock, we showed patience, hit the woodwork three times and more than earned the victory,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

With Cristiano Ronaldo rested, Sarri stuck with the 4-3-3 formation, using Cuadrado in the trident with Gonzalo Higuain and Dybala.

“Dybala had more freedom to roam, while Cuadrado had to adjust to his position and help cover the gaps as a consequence.

Lyon, Garcia: "Stopping CR7 will be a team effort."

Rudi_Garcia_Lione.jpg

Feb 20, 2020

Lyon manager Rudi Garcia spoke with Corriere dello Sport prior to his team's Champions League match against Juventus.

On Cristiano Ronaldo: "You stop him at the border, if he decides that he doesn't like Lyon and doesn't want to play here. Jokes aside, you can contain with a team-effort defensively. It's useless to cage him if you must leave space to Dybala or Higuain.

Will Juve win the Champions League? I don't know. But I know that it's their priority, after many scudetti. I don't believe that Ronaldo came to Juve just to win in Italy." .....

VAR revolution: UEFA president backs proposal to change the offside rule

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor uefa logo

Feb 20, 2020

When it was introduced, VAR was a revolution in the world of football. However, the use of it has divided the football community, especially when it comes to offside calls. Therefore, the technology could be heading for a new revolution on this front.

In England, in fact, a way is being studied to change the offside rule, which with the technology on the field is linked to just millimetres, reviewed and calculated in front of the TV.

The proposal comes from the former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and concerns cases such as those when the yellow dotted line is used to determine the call.

With the new rule, the concept of 'light' would be introduced. To be offside, the attacker would have to be with the body completely beyond the defender, arms excluded.

Official: Centralized VAR room for all games from 2020/21 in Serie A

Var.Room.690x400.jpg

Feb 20, 2020

As was announced earlier today by the AIA, Italian referees association, Serie A will start using a 'centralized' VAR room starting next season. This means that there will no longer be a VAR crew in or outside the stadium, but rather at the Coverciano.

This is already used in German football and was also the model during the World Cup last summer. For Italy, it's another step forward in perfecting the technique, as they aim to help the referees be more consistent in their judgement.

Sarri 'evaluates' Chiellini

Maurizio Sarri only focused on the match against SPAL in Serie A and has revealed that Giorgio Chiellini could be back in Juventus' starting line-up.

The captain returned against Brescia but Sarri didn’t want to guarantee the Italy international a place in the first XI against SPAL in Ferrara.

He revealed that they will “evaluate” after the training session today and the same goes for another veteran, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

“At the moment, I don’t know,” Sarri said at a press conference. “Giorgio was doing well enough, despite missing the last step. We will evaluate together after the last training session today; we will talk about it. .......

Line-ups: SPAL v Juventus

Feb 22, 2020

Leaders Juventus visit bottom of the table SPAL with a revamped XI due to injuries, suspension and the Champions League, giving Giorgio Chiellini his first start since August.

It kicks off at the Stadio Paolo Mazza in Ferrara at 17.00 GMT.

This is a top to tail battle, as SPAL are propping up the table with just 15 points compared to leaders Juventus on 57.

Juventus make several changes, especially with the Champions League Round of 16 against Olympique Lyonnais coming up, but cannot afford to make mistakes with Lazio only one point behind them.

Leonardo Bonucci is suspended, with Miralem Pjanic, Gonzalo Higuain, Douglas Costa, Sami Khedira and Merih Demiral injured.

Cristiano Ronaldo was rested last week, so he returns eager to match the all-time record of 11 consecutive Serie A games on target, set by Gabriel Batistuta at Fiorentina and Fabio Quagliarella with Sampdoria.

It also marks the Portuguese legend’s 1,000th competitive match. ......

HT 0-1: Juve rely on historic Ronaldo

Immagine

Feb 22, 2020

Cristiano Ronaldo made history twice in the first half alone, sweeping in Juan Cuadrado’s cross to give Juventus the lead away to SPAL.

This was bottom against top in the Serie A table, as SPAL had just 15 points and lost four on the bounce, including new coach Gigi Di Biagio’s debut last week. Bryan Dabo and Alberto Cerri were injured, while Juve missed Miralem Pjanic, Gonzalo Higuain, Douglas Costa, Sami Khedira, Merih Demiral and suspended Leonardo Bonucci. Giorgio Chiellini therefore got his first start since August, having returned as a substitute last week after five months out with a torn ACL.

This was an historic occasion for Cristiano Ronaldo, his 1,000th match as a professional football player.

Juve rely on Ronaldo and Ramsey

Cristiano Ronaldo made history twice in Ferrara, as his goal and an Aaron Ramsey lob pushed past still struggling SPAL, despite Andrea Petagna’s penalty.

This was bottom against top in the Serie A table, as SPAL still have just 15 points and have now lost five on the bounce, including new coach Gigi Di Biagio’s debut last week.

This was an historic occasion for Cristiano Ronaldo, his 1,000th match as a professional football player. ........

Sarri: 'Eradicate Juventus weakness'

sarri intervista spal juventus 1-2

Feb 22, 2020

Maurizio Sarri saw “improvement” from Juventus in a 2-1 win over SPAL, hopes to “eradicate” the defensive weakness and warns “the Scudetto is an objective, the Champions League a dream.”

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opener, on target for the 11th Serie A game in a row, with Aaron Ramsey’s lob before an Andrea Petagna penalty.

“It’s the same situation we had in the last game, many scoring opportunities and we kept it alive to the end anyway,” Sarri told Sky Sport Italia.

“I get the sensation the team is clearly improving, it’s just a pity we don’t kill matches off. It’s good to see we are creating opportunities with a certain degree of consistency, including rattling the woodwork seven times in our last three games.”

The penalty incident was curious, as the earpiece communication with VAR and the on-field review monitor were not working, so the VAR officials made the call on Daniele Rugani’s foul.

“We are conceding a lot of penalties, which is unusual considering how we tend to defend outside the box. Tonight we had a penalty given against us by VAR when the VAR wasn’t working! If that had been the other way, I can only imagine what they would’ve said…

“It seems like a great injustice if the VAR can make a decision and not the referee. Why is the referee even there, in that case? La Penna explained it to me after the game, that this is written into the rulebook. I don’t agree with it, but it’s there.” .......

Serie A football has taken a back seat after Italy became the European country worst hit by the coronavirus.

There have been 152 reported cases, and quarantine restrictions have been put in place in the Veneto and Lombardy regions, near to big cities Milan and Venice.

Many lives, events, schools, and businesses have been affected by the outbreak, and around 50,000 people are stuck where they are for at least two weeks.

Following the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus, Italy are taking no chances in their pursuit to limit the spread of the virus. Just this past weekend, four games in Serie A were postponed to avoid big crowds gathering at the stadiums.

At a press conference earlier today, FIGC president Gravina also confirmed that the intention is to play the upcoming round behind closed doors. In other words, the big clash between Juve and Inter will be without fans.

"For Inter-Ludogorets, the request to play behind closed doors has received positive feedback. Also for Serie A, we have expected and requested to be able to play games behind closed doors. This evening, a final answer will arrive," he stated. .......

Juventus won't refund tickets for game against Inter despite closed doors

Juventus will not be reimbursing the fans who bought tickets for the Bianconeri’s league clash against Inter, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Milan based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport via Calciomercato.com.

The report details how the upcoming Derby d’Italia is set to be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus outbreak, with the only thing missing now being Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s consent. The Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora announced the decision yesterday, sparking controversy regarding the policy of reimbursement of tickets and season tickets already paid for. .......

Juve fans free to travel to France

despite Coronavirus fears

Champions, Lione-Juve senza restrizioni per i tifosi italiani

Juventus fans have been given the all clear to travel to France for a midweek Champions League clash against Lyon despite the spread of Coronavirus in Italy, the Italian club confirmed.

Upcoming matches in Serie A and the Europa League will be played behind closed doors to combat the highly-contagious virus which on Tuesday spread to Tuscany and Sicily in the south of the country.

Napoli's Champions League last 16, first leg match against Barcelona in Naples on Tuesday will go ahead on front of supporters at the San Paolo Stadium.

And French authorities and Lyon announced that "no special restrictions will be implemented for Juventus fans," the Turin club said in a statement.

"Fans following Juventus will be able to watch tomorrow's Champions League match at the Groupama Stadium without any problems."

The number of confirmed infections in Italy has jumped to 283, with over 50 new cases reported since Monday, with seven people having died after contracting the virus.

Sarri: 'Three-year Juventus project'

bonucci-sarri-conferenza-juve

Feb 25, 2020

Maurizio Sarri discussed the dangers Juventus face against Olympique Lyonnais, the Coronavirus crisis and why the Champions League is “a dream” in the three-year project.

The first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 kicks off in France on Wednesday at 20.00 GMT.

“It’s a European and global problem, not an Italian one. In Italy, we made 3,500 tests for Coronavirus and therefore had many more positive tests. In France you had about 300 tests and so obviously the average who are positive is much lower. If you did as many tests as we did, you’d probably have as many positives too.

“Therefore, our fans have every right to be here.”

Sarri was asked if he felt the responsibility to go for the Champions League and if his future even depended on the trophy.

“I feel frankly even more responsibility in Italy to achieve every result. You all seem to pretend it’s not happening because it suits your various narratives, but there are clubs out there with significantly more capabilities than Juventus. We are in the group of around 10-12 who can dream of the trophy. ....

OLYMPIQUE LYON VS JUVENTUS PREVIEW

Juventus will resume their UEFA Champions League campaign when they travel

to France on Wednesday to face Olympique Lyon in the Round of 16 first leg.

Feb 25, 2020

Following a rough start to February, notably losing to Verona 2-1, Juventus have managed to turn things around with two back to back wins in Serie A. They are still leading the league table by one point and are coming on the back of a narrow win over SPAL on the weekend.

On Wednesday, the Bianconeri will brace themselves for yet another stern test against Olympique Lyon in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash in the UEFA Champions League.

Lyon haven’t had the best of campaigns, however, having accumulated only 37 points from 26 matches in Ligue 1, which means they are trailing leaders Paris Saint-Germain by a whopping 28 points. The French outfit has struggled to perform at home this season, which should be a worry for manager Rudi Garcia.

Indeed, only four clubs have performed worse than Lyon at home in Ligue 1 this term. Les Gones were also lucky to qualify for the Round of 16 as both SL Benfica and Zenit St.Petersburg were denied entry to the knockout stages by just one point.

Therefore, Juventus will be clear favourites when they travel to the Groupama Stadium to face Lyon. And here, at The Hard Tackle, we will run the rule over the two sides ahead of their important match-up in the Champions League this midweek. .......
