Deschamps: 'Hope Juve win Champions'

France boss Didier Deschamps hopes his old side Juventus can win the Champions League this season. “They’ve had this objective for many years now.”

Deschamps played for The Old Lady from 1994 to 1999, and was a part of the squad the last time they won the competition in 1996.

The former Monaco coach is in Dubai at the Globe Soccer Awards and says he would like the Bianconeri to finally win it again.

“Like seven or eight other teams, they start the Champions League to win it. It’s a legitimate objective for Juve, but only one team can win it.

“Juve have had this goal for many years, and I hope they do it. The quality is there, but there are other strong sides that can win it, we will see,” said Deschamps.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal defeated Deschamps’ France in the final of Euro 2016, but the former midfielder has nothing but respect for the Juve striker.

“He is a great champion that can maintain such high levels for many years. He has this hunger to win and to score goals.

“Ronaldo is a great professional. He’s a decisive player, he doesn’t run maybe as much as he did four or five years ago, but he runs better.

“When you have a player like that in your team, you know he can make a difference at any time.”

As the Christmas break has come to an end, Juventus are preparing for the second half of the season, which is expected to be a tough one. In addition to the Scudetto fight with Inter, the Bianconeri will also try to get as far as possible in the Champions League.

Although there is quite some time to go until the first leg against Lyon will take place (February 26th), Juve will soon have to hand in their Champions League squad list to UEFA. As reported by Tuttosport (via Calciomercato.com), two players in particular are at risk.

Aaron Ramsey and Sami Khedira. The former doesn't guarantee an adequate continuity from a physical point of view, but his quality when fit remains very high. However, should the German give more positive answers, Sarri might pick him instead.

Therefore, it will be a battle between the two players until the manager makes his final decision. Although none of them are starters for the time being, it will be an important decision.

Sarri: 'Juve make too many mistakes'

Maurizio Sarri insists Juventus must “concentrate on how to improve ourselves” rather than neutralise Cagliari, while discussing midfield options.

It kicks off on Monday at 14.00 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“We’ve been working in training on the many errors that we’ve made recently, so before trying to work out how to neutralise Cagliari, we concentrated more on how to improve ourselves,” said the coach in his press conference.

“We’re coming off a game where we got a lot wrong mentally even before the tactical issues. The defence gets the blame when conceding a goal, but I think they’ve not been protected well by the midfield.”

Juve ended 2019 with a defeat, losing 3-1 to Lazio in the Supercoppa Italiana in Riyadh, raising questions over the use of the trident with Paulo Dybala, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain.

“We’ll see tomorrow, there’s also Aaron Ramsey available who is now in good shape. It’s a game where we will need to pay a great deal of attention behind the ball.

“Dybala only worked separately in training yesterday because he had a slight muscular issue, but nothing serious. Douglas Costa is always an option, although we need to take time to get him back into shape after a serious injury.

“Matthijs de Ligt had shoulder and adductor problems, so it was a difficult spell for him, especially after playing so much. Merih Demiral was in good form, so we had the opportunity to rest De Ligt. I’ll decide tomorrow who starts.”

Sami Khedira and Giorgio Chiellini are injured, with Rodrigo Bentancur starting a three-match ban after his red card in the Supercoppa.

“At this moment, we are trying Adrien Rabiot on the right side of midfield, while Emre Can could play central midfield or on the right. We’ve also started working on Federico Bernardeschi over the last few days.

“Rabiot seems ok physically and has been improving, but he still gives off the impression of someone who can do more.”

Juventus have already made their first purchase of the 2020-21 season, paying €35m plus bonuses for Dejan Kulusevski from Atalanta, although he’ll remain on loan at Parma.

“He is an interesting figure,” said Sarri. “Transfers are not by area, but evidently the conditions could not be met to bring him in straight away. The most important thing is that the club always gets there first for these young talents.”

Juventus - Cagliari MATCH PREVIEW

juventus-cagliair analisi tattica sarri maran

https://www.football-italia.net/SerieA/match/preview/142542

Jan 5, 2020

Juventus look set to stick with the Dybala-Higuain-Ronaldo trident against a Cagliari side in danger of losing steam at the wrong time.

Maurizio Sarri had initially been reluctant to field all three at the same time, but they have clicked in recent weeks, their goals and assists papering over cracks in other areas of the pitch.

Juve were comprehensively beaten 3-1 by Lazio in the Supercoppa just before the winter break, but they remain joint-top of Serie A, level on points with an impressive Inter side.

Giorgio Chiellini and Sami Khedira are long-term casualties, while Rodrigo Bentancur starts a three-match ban against Cagliari.

Bentancur’s absence is particularly a blow as Sarri is forced into yet another midfield reshuffle, with new boys Adrien Rabiot and Aaron Ramsey so far struggling for consistency.

On the other hand, Cagliari’s XI has tended to pick itself, particularly in the middle of the park, where Nahitan Nandez, Marko Rog and Luca Cigarini have been generally inseparable behind Radja Nainggolan.

The Sardinians will also be boosted by the returns of goalkeeper Alessio Cragno and striker Leonardo Pavoletti later this month, but they are still unavailable, along with Lucas Castro and Luca Ceppitelli.

Successive losses to Lazio and Udinese have seen the Rossoblu tumble out of Champions League contention, but they could leapfrog Atalanta with a first win in Turin since 2009.

Keep an eye on: Joao Pedro (Cagliari) – Now 27 and with a drug ban firmly behind him, Joao Pedro is playing the best football of his career, outscoring Cristiano Ronaldo with 11 goals in just 17 Serie A games this season. If the Sardinians are to pick up anything against Juve, it will be in part thanks to the Brazilian.

Form Guide: Juventus (W W L D W) Cagliari (L L D W D)

Last season: Juventus 3-1 Cagliari

Stat fact: Cagliari’s last win against Juve dates all the way back to November 2009, when Max Allegri was still their coach.

Top tip: Home win but no clean sheet.

Juventus (probable): Szczesny; Cuadrado, De Ligt, Bonucci, Alex Sandro; Rabiot, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala, Ronaldo, Higuain

Suspended: Bentancur

Cagliari (probable): Olsen; Cacciatore, Walukiewicz, Klavan, Pellegrini; Nandez, Cigarini, Rog; Nainggolan; Joao Pedro, Simeone

Suspended: Pisacane

JUVENTUS VS CAGLIARI PREVIEW: PROBABLE LINEUPS

Juventus will be eager to start the year on a positive note against Cagliari at home, looking to remain at par with Inter Milan at the top of the table.

The Serie A has resumed after the end of the winter break and the reigning champions are set to take the field against a spirited Cagliari side at the Allianz Stadium on Monday.

Maurizio Sarri’s men ended the year on a high note and will like to continue that against a solid Cagliari side. The Old Lady have to get their act together as they are currently behind Inter Milan in the league table, albeit only on goal difference. So, Sarri will be keen to maintain that consistency level heading into the new year as we enter the business end of the season.

Meanwhile, Cagliari have been in a decent run of form this season and it is evident from their position in the league table (6th). However, Rolando Maran’s men have not been that impressive going into the new year as they are winless in their last three league games coming to this tough fixture against the champions.

But, Maran will hope that the new year brings new fortune to his side as they push for a spot in Europe next season. With both teams looking to start their year with a win, we here at The Hard Tackle take a closer look at both the sides ahead of their clash.

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

There are a few selection headaches for Maurizio Sarri, as the Italian will be without the services of Giorgio Chiellini and Sami Khedira, who are both sidelined with injuries. Rodrigo Bentancur is also out of this clash through suspension.

Juan Cuadrado may start as the right-back, while Paulo Dybala may pair up with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain in attack. Wojciech Szczesny is the first choice for Maurizio Sarri under the bar, while Leonardo Bonucci and Matthijs De Ligt are likely to keep their spots at the heart of the Juventus defence.

In midfield, Sarri is likely to keep Aaron Ramsey and partnering the Welshman there will be Miralem Pjanic and Blaise Matuidi. A lot will depend on the midfield for Juventus as they will look to control the game and dictate terms. In attack, Dybala will look to carry on his fine goalscoring form and will be well assisted by Higuain and Ronaldo.

Probable Lineup (4-3-1-2): Szczesny; Cuadrado, Bonucci, De Ligt, Sandro; Ramsey, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala; Higuain, Ronaldo

Cagliari

Just like Sarri, Rolando Maran also has his fair share of problems for this crucial fixture. Veteran defender Fabio Pisacane is suspended for this match and his unavailability may make way for Luca Ceppitelli. However, the good news for the manager is the return of goalkeeper Robin Olsen and midfielder Nahitan Nandez, and the duo are available to start the game against Juventus.

Cagliari are likely to play in a 4-3-1-2 formation, with Olsen starting in goal, while Ragnar Klavan will  the backline. The experienced Fabrizio Cacciatore may return to the fray, while on-loan youngster from Juventus, Luca Pellegrini is also set to start.

In midfield, Nandez’s addition will add more energy to the whole team and will be partnered by Marko Rog and Luca Cigarini. Radja Nainggolan will play in a more advanced free role behind Giovanni Simeone, who will lead the line for the Sardinian club.

Probable Lineup (4-3-1-2): Olsen; Cacciatore, Klavan, Ceppitelli, Pellegrini; Nandez, Cigarini, Rog; Nainggolan; Pedro, Simeone

Key Stats

  • Cagliari’s last win against Juventus came way back in November 2009 and since then they have faced 14 defeats and three draws.
  • Juventus are unbeaten in their last 29 Serie A home games (W24 D5) and could take that count to 30 for the first time since 2017, when they face Cagliari.
  • Juventus have struggled defensively as they have only managed to keep five clean sheets this season.
  • Cagliari have won only two of their 38 away games against Juventus in Serie A (D14 L22), with the last win coming way back in January 2009 under Massimiliano Allegri.
  • In Juventus’s last league game, Maurizio Sarri secured his 100th Serie A victory as a coach in what was just his 169th match

Player to Watch

Paulo Dybala

Having scored nine goals in all competitions this season, the Argentinian forward has done well, but he has a lot to prove in a team full of superstars. Dybala has the potential to take Juventus to another level and with the season entering into its business end, Maurizio Sarri will expect a lot more from one of his go-to ean in this current side.

With only five goals in the league till now, the 26-year old has not necessarily performed at top level like he has in the knockout tournaments. He has to replicate that form in Serie A as well and the Dybala will look to start this new year with a bang by producing a flawless performance against Cagliari to start 2020 on a high.

Prediction

Juventus 2-1 Cagliari

It has to be a tight affair where both sides will give every ounce of their energy on the field and late drama may unfold misery for one while the other may dance with joy. In this case, considering the quality and the current goalscoring form, Juventus have the edge over their visitors.

However, if Rolando Maran’s men can bring back their form from the autumn, then they have a chance to salvage something from this game. The Hard Tackle, though, predicts a narrow win for the hosts and a positive start to the year for Maurizio Sarri’s men.

Ronaldo hat-trick crushes Cagliari

Jan 6, 2020

Juventus snapped Cagliari resistance in the second half with a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick and his assist for Gonzalo Higuain.

The Bianconeri ended 2019 with a 3-1 Supercoppa Italiana defeat to Lazio, so needed to start 2020 on the right foot. Rodrigo Bentancur started a three-match ban, with Sami Khedira and Giorgio Chiellini injured, so Adrien Rabiot stepped into midfield with Aaron Ramsey in the trequartista role shelving the all-star trident. Cagliari missed Luca Ceppitelli, Daniele Ragatzu, Alessio Cragno, Leonardo Pavoletti and suspended Fabio Pisacane, but Robin Olsen returned from his ban with Sebastian Walukiewicz getting his Serie A debut.

The Sardinians had not beaten Juve in the league since November 2009, followed by three draws from 17 encounters.

It took a very long time for this game to get going, as Ramsey and Dybala failed to keep their shots on target, while Cristiano Ronaldo was offside when his header forced a great save from Olsen.

Defender Merih Demiral was picked for the fifth game in a row rather than Matthijs de Ligt and showed why, as his header from a Miralem Pjanic corner clipped the crossbar.

Radja Nainggolan had the only real Cagliari chance to make an impact in the first half when sent clear by Giovanni Simeone on the counter, but he slipped at the crucial moment.

Juve did finally break through after the restart thanks to some shocking defending from the Sardinians. They were passing it slowly and sluggishly on the edge of their own penalty area, so Ronaldo pounced and went around Olsen to turn into an empty net. For the first time in his career, CR7 scored in five consecutive Serie A appearances.

It was nearly 2-0 moments later, as Olsen showed cat-like reflexes for a triple save on Paulo Dybala from close range, as the ball ricocheted around in the six-yard box.

Cagliari did threaten, as Wojciech Szczesny had to fingertip a Giovanni Simeone header on to the top of the bar from close range.

However, Marko Rog tripped Dybala in the penalty area and Ronaldo kept his cool to convert the spot-kick past Olsen, giving Juve more of a cushion.

Cagliari crumbled at the end, as Ronaldo decided to turn assist man with a pass down the left channel to send substitute Higuain forward, there was no real support, so Pipita cut back inside and blasted into the far bottom corner.

Less than a minute later, Douglas Costa made an impact with his sprint through the centre, slide-rule pass for Ronaldo’s angled drive, completing a hat-trick.

Douglas Costa ran almost from one end to the other, going down under pressure with no response to his penalty appeals.

Cagliari could’ve had a consolation goal late on, but Joao Pedro turned his marker to hit the top of the post.

Ronaldo: 'Put pressure on Inter'

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling, playing a sport and standing

Jan 6, 2020

Cristiano Ronaldo is “pleased with the hat-trick,” but insists it is more important that Juventus “put pressure on Inter” with their 4-0 win over Cagliari.

CR7 was the star of the show in Turin with three goals and an assist for Gonzalo Higuain.

“The most important thing is that the team wins,” he told Sky Sport Italia after his first Serie A hat-trick, the other having come in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid.

“We played well and created a lot of scoring opportunities. I am pleased with the hat-trick, but the most important thing was to win and put pressure on Inter.

“We’re improving game by game, not just in defence, but also in midfield and attack. We are a complete squad and have to work together in every move.”

Juventus have their three points, now joint leaders Inter have a tricky trip to Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli this evening.

I don’t know if I’ll watch it, but obviously I hope Inter lose, because that would help us. In any case, we’ve done what we needed to do and can only wait now.”

Sarri happy with 'consistency'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor juventus cagliari 4-0 sarri

https://www.football-italia.net/148369/sarri-happy-consistency

Jan 6, 2020

Maurizio Sarri claimed Juventus went through their "biggest test of consistency" this season after a thumping 4-0 win over Cagliari.

Juventus came out in Sarri's preferred 4-3-1-2 and played an astonishing second half to help them climb back to the top of Serie A, at least until Inter have played his former employer Napoli tonight.

After having seen Cristiano Ronaldo score his first hat-trick of the season, Sarri was also pleased with how his players reacted to his tactical approach against the Rossoblu.

“Perhaps this was the biggest test of our consistency this season,” Sarri added. “It was 80 minutes on the level of the first 45 against Udinese, Samp and Napoli.

“The quality we have only expressed in flashes, we showed over a longer period today. On the field we must be organised, in order to press during certain situations. Today, we were more organised than we’ve usually been.”

Sarri chose to play Aaron Ramsey behind the attacking duo and said he was happy with what he saw from the Welsh midfielder.

“Ramsey did well, he is finding continuity in training after a period with a lot of niggles. His condition is getting better. In my opinion, he did well defensively. In the attacking phase, he still has a way to go. He could have done better, and he has the qualities to do better.”

Also Juan Cuadrado’s energy was praised by the former Chelsea coach, but he admitted the Colombian “is on the ground too often”.

“Cuadrado is quite organised in his work on the line, the end product is a bit messier. He puts his ass on the ground a bit too often. But then he has this energy when we are pressing and against a team like Cagliari, who play with a lot of density in the middle, it’s very important.”

“[Adrien] Rabiot played a good game, he is growing. The small difficulties he had, I created for him when I made him play on the right. I am happy, he played an honest game. He was always in the right position.

Merih Demiral was allowed to continue his impressive form next to Leonardo Bonucci in the heart of the defence, but Sarri said he is still “convinced” about the talent of Matthijs De Ligt.

“I’m the first person who is convinced that De Ligt will become one of the best defenders in the world. During the first few months he had a devastating path. He had to learn a lot about playing every three days.

“Demiral is in great shape at the moment, it seems right to exploit the players in relation to the moment they’re in.”

About not playing the trident against Cagliari, Sarri claimed he wanted to push Ronaldo higher towards the opposition’s goal and claimed it wouldn’t work in a 4-3-3.

“The movement of the midfielders with the two attackers are a lot different than from the 4-3-3, especially because of Cristiano, who we want to keep up front to change the defensive movements.

“It’s a difficulty I hope we will avoid a little bit more during the next weeks.”

Sporting director Fabio Paratici has claimed there won’t be any movement on behalf of the Old Lady and Sarri joked about buying him dinner for saving his month.

“Paratici said the market is closed? I’ll buy him a dinner; he eliminated a month of useless questions coming my way. I don’t care a lot about the transfer market. I can stay even a week without asking him for any news.

“It’s difficult to improve a team in January, what the sporting director said seems normal to me.”

About the big game between Napoli and Inter tonight, Sarri revealed he would prefer not to watch the contest.

"Tonight, I will take Ciro out for a walk," he said. "My dog." sefz

Fonseca: 'Hope I make Ronaldo angry'

Roma boss Paulo Fonseca says he hopes to make Cristiano Ronaldo “angry” on Sunday and that his club are “vigilant” in the transfer market.

Portuguese pair Fonseca and Ronaldo go head-to-head this weekend, when Roma welcome Juventus to the Olimpico in Serie A.

“I don’t know what I’ll say to him, but I hope he’s angry after the game,” he told reporters when asked about his upcoming duel with the No 7.

“Juve are a great team, the best in Italy together with Inter, so it’ll be a tough game. Zaniolo will make it.

“It’ll be like a normal game. We’ll be playing against a great team, but for us it’ll be a normal game.

“Juve and Inter are the best teams in Italy, but I can’t say who are better. These are the games that we all want to play.”

Inevitably, the coach was also asked about Daniele De Rossi following his decision to retire and the Giallorossi’s transfer plans for January.

“We’re vigilant, but I can’t say any more than that.

“I don’t know De Rossi, but I know De Rossi the player and he was a great player who has just ended his career.

“He was a very good player, he had a great career and I like to talk to all the great football connoisseurs.”

Bad news for Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri, as Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain didn’t train with the rest of the squad today, according to an official announcement made by the Turin based club.

The report details how the 32-year-old Argentinian striker trained separately due to a problem with his left thigh. There are now fears that he won’t be able to play against Roma on Sunday night, an important game for the Bianconeri. Higuain has scored seven goals and provided six assists in 23 games so far this season.

Following the convincing 4-0 win against Cagliari at Allianz Stadium, Juventus are gearing up for what is expected to be a tough away clash at the Olimpico, taking on Fonseca's Roma. Given how tight the Scudetto race with Inter is, important points are at stake every game.

Therefore, it will be up to Maurizio Sarri to get his players into the right mood. Luckily for the Bianconeri, Gonzalo Higuain will be called up to the game as he trained with his teammates for the entire training session earlier today.

As Calciomercato.com highlights, the Argentine striker is in good condition. He has fully recovered from the fatigue in his left thigh, which thus doesn't jeopardize his availability for the important match against Roma.

However, El Pipita is expected to start the game on the bench. Dybala and Ronaldo will pair up in attack, while the supporting position in the attacking trio (trequartista) hasn't been decided yet.

Sarri: 'Fonseca's Roma dangerous'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor sarri conferenza stampa pre roma-juventus

https://www.football-italia.net/148574/sarri-fonsecas-roma-dangerous

Jan 11, 2020

Maurizio Sarri is impressed with Paulo Fonseca’s Roma and describes what makes them “very dangerous” when attacking Juventus.

It kicks off on Sunday at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“It’s going to be a difficult game and we need to be more consistent over the course of 90 minutes, so I want us to build on the good work seen against Cagliari,” said the coach in his press conference.

“I had already tipped Roma and Paulo Fonseca to be a surprise outfit in Serie A this season. Despite the many injuries, he has been able to give them a precise identity.

“They continually have these bursts of pace that make them very dangerous. The biggest risk is that you get caught off balance and are split in two. This is why we have to keep the lines tight and be wary.”

Gonzalo Higuain is not 100 per cent fit, so Sarri was asked how Juve would change in his absence.

“It depends on the characteristics of the players. Paulo Dybala starts his runs a little deeper and Cristiano Ronaldo off centre. Higuain therefore resolves an issue of getting bodies in the box.

“Aaron Ramsey can find space easily when Dybala and Ronaldo are in front of him, but so could Adrien Rabiot and Sami Khedira in those situations.

“I have not suddenly embraced squad rotation. At Napoli, we needed to find consistency at that time and it was the priority. Changing two or three players won’t make that big a difference to the shape of the team, but six or seven can certainly transform the approach you want to take.”

Matthijs de Ligt has been left on the bench for five games in a row, but the former Ajax star could step in for Merih Demiral tomorrow.

“He is doing better, we get the feeling the pain in his shoulder and hip is subsiding.”

Sarri celebrated his birthday this week, but shrugged when asked what he wanted as a gift from his players.

“I ask them to do what they always do, which is give their all to win the game. Besides, I am at an age now where birthdays make me grumpy…”

Probable line-ups: Roma vs Juventus

Immagine

https://www.football-italia.net/148608/probable-line-ups-roma-vs-juventus

Jan 12, 2020

Roma coach Paulo Fonseca could switch to a back three for the first time this season in tonight’s clash against Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Giallorossi have usually lined out in a 4-2-3-1 formation this season, however latest reports suggest that Fonseca is contemplating switching to a 3-4-2-1.

Fonseca’s side have numerous absences through injury. Davide Zappacosta, Davide Santon, Javier Pastore, Justin Kluivert, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Federico Fazio and Mirko Antonucci are all unavailable.

Turkish defender Mert Certin is slated to join Chris Smalling and Gianluca Mancini in the three-man defence.

Aleksandar Kolarov and Alessandro Florenzi would be utilised as wing-backs, with Nicolo Zaniolo and Lorenzo Pellegrini playing just in behind lone striker Edin Dzeko.

The Italian champions meanwhile are expected to keep what is now their standard 4-3-1-2 formation.

Merih Demiral is expected to keep his place at the heart of the Bianconeri defence alongside Leonardo Bonucci.

Aaron Ramsey should play as the trequartista, supporting Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala.

Blaise Matuidi, Miralem Pjanic and Adrien Rabiot should complete the midfield trio.

Probable line-ups:

Roma (3-5-2): Lopez; Cetin, Smalling, Mancini; Florenzi, Diawara, Veretout, Kolarov; Zaniolo Pellegrini; Dzeko

Juventus (4-3-1-2): Szczesny; Cuadrado, Bonucci, Demiral, Alex Sandro; Rabiot, Pjanic, Matuidi; Ramsey; Ronaldo, Dybala

Juventus can be crowned Winter Champions with a victory and use Aaron Ramsey behind Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo, while Roma look to Nicolò Zaniolo and Edin Dzeko.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 19.45 GMT.

Inter were held 1-1 by Atalanta last night, a result that directly impacts where these two teams will stand at the midway stage of the season.

A win would make the Bianconeri sole Winter Champions, meaning they are top of the table halfway through the campaign, whereas Roma could go clear in fourth place.

The Giallorossi are fresh from a shock 2-0 home defeat to Torino and continue to miss Javier Pastore, Federico Fazio, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Davide Santon, Justin Kluivert and Davide Zappacosta, while Leonardo Spinazzola is not fully fit.

There had been hints of a three-man defence with Mert Cetin, Gianluca Mancini and Chris Smalling, with tests in training, but coach Paulo Fonseca ultimately decided to stick with his usual 4-2-3-1 system.

Zaniolo, Diego Perotti and Lorenzo Pellegrini support Edin Dzeko upfront.

Rodrigo Bentancur continues his three-match ban, with Sami Khedira and Giorgio Chiellini injured, while Gonzalo Higuain is only fit for the bench.

Instead, Ramsey again takes the trequartista role behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Dybala.

Maurizio Sarri stands by Turkey international Merih Demiral for the fifth game in a row, leaving out massive signing Matthijs de Ligt.

It’s a return to the Stadio Olimpico for former Roma men Wojciech Szczesny and Miralem Pjanic.

Juventus already lost here 2-0 last season, but haven’t suffered two consecutive Serie A defeats to Roma since 1995.

These two coaches have met before, as Fonseca’s Shakhtar Donetsk knocked Sarri’s Napoli out of the Champions League.

Roma: Pau Lopez; Florenzi, Smalling, Mancini, Kolarov; Diawara, Veretout; Zaniolo, Pellegrini, Perotti; Dzeko

Roma bench: Fuzato, Mirante, Juan Jesus, Bruno Peres, Spinazzola, Cetin, Cristante, Under, Kalinic

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, Demiral, Bonucci, Alex Sandro; Rabiot, Pjanic, Matuidi; Ramsey; Dybala, Ronaldo

Juventus bench: Buffon, Pinsoglio, De Ligt, Rugani, De Sciglio, Danilo, Emre Can, Bernardeschi, Douglas Costa, Higuain, Pjaca

HT 0-2: Juve and injury hit Roma hard

It has been an eventful first half at the Olimpico, as Juventus lead 2-0, but Merih Demiral and Nicolò Zaniolo were stretchered off with potentially serious injuries.

The Bianconeri knew Inter had been held by Atalanta last night, so a win would secure their status as Winter Champions at the midway stage of the season, while the hosts needed a boost to go clear in fourth after the surprise home defeat to Torino.

Roma missed Javier Pastore, Federico Fazio, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Davide Santon, Justin Kluivert and Davide Zappacosta, but resisted the rumoured switch to three at the back. Rodrigo Bentancur continued his ban, with Sami Khedira and Giorgio Chiellini injured, as Aaron Ramsey and Merih Demiral were again given the nod.

It took under three minutes to break the deadlock, as Paulo Dybala floated a free kick to the back post, where Demiral got away from Aleksandar Kolarov to volley in almost with his shin.

Roma were caught napping again, this time with Jordan Veretout on a back-pass, as Dybala snuck up behind him to steal the ball and was hauled down. Cristiano Ronaldo sent Pau Lopez the wrong way to convert the penalty and double Juve’s lead.

The Giallorossi nearly got back into it, as Wojciech Szczesny flapped at an Alessandro Florenzi cross and Lorenzo Pellegrini’s rebound was cleared practically off the line by Adrien Rabiot’s torso.

Goal-scorer Demiral landed heavily on his knee after a huge leap on a free kick and had to limp off, replaced by Matthijs de Ligt.

Nicolò Zaniolo’s shot was charged down after a ruleta, then he was brought down by De Ligt on the edge of the box following a marvellous slalom through defenders. He must’ve fallen awkwardly, as Zaniolo was in tears and had to be stretchered off, making way for Cengiz Under.

Diego Perotti pounced on a poor Miralem Pjanic pass and was brought down by Juan Cuadrado right on the edge of the box, but Kolarov’s free kick was deflected over. Instead, Ronaldo threatened to make it 3-0 on a Rabiot through ball, his angled drive well parried by Pau Lopez.

These two coaches have met before, as Fonseca’s Shakhtar Donetsk knocked Sarri’s Napoli out of the Champions League.

Juventus stunned Roma with an early couple of goals to secure their Winter Champion status, but Nicolò Zaniolo suffered a serious injury.

Roma continued to push with a series of corners, but Mancini got the volley all wrong as Cengiz Under floated a ball to the back post.

They finally made some of the pressure count when Dzeko’s volley bounced off the base of the post, then Szczesny made an extraordinary double save on Cengiz Under on the rebound at the back post. However, after viewing on VAR, the referee saw that the ball had hit Alex Sandro on the stomach and then he’d moved his hand towards it in an instinctive gesture. Perotti converted the penalty and it was game on.

Ronaldo wasted a free header, with the opportunity to go 3-1 up on a Blaise Matuidi cross, then CR7 hesitated a moment too long in giving Gonzalo Higuain the pass for an angled drive, so that goal was flagged offside.

It remained open until the final whistle, as Pellegrini ballooned over from a promising position after a crucial De Ligt tackle on Dzeko.

Juve held on for the victory, which makes them Winter Champions of Serie A, two points clear of Inter.

Sarri: 'Juve tried to sit on lead'

Maurizio Sarri maintains Juventus “played well for 60 minutes, but tried to sit on our lead rather than increase it” in a 2-1 victory away to Roma.

This win, along with Inter’s 1-1 draw against Atalanta last night, means the Bianconeri are alone on top of the Serie A table at the halfway stage and are therefore crowned Winter Champions.

Their result was achieved within 10 minutes, when Merih Demiral met a free kick and Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty.

“We played well for a good 60 minutes, and suffering at the Olimpico against Roma is almost inevitable,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“What I did not like is that we tried to sit on our lead rather than increase it, as three times we had three-against-one counter-attacks and didn’t finish them off.

“We did well for long periods, so I am happy with the result, but we tried to pass it inside our own half when in the lead rather than push it forward.

“I don’t think the long ball is a great idea, partly because we don’t have many strikers who are strong in the air, but also because it can get us 6-7 goals per season, but I believe will also lead to us conceding another 10.

“There are risks with our passing game, but what we need to do is pass the ball in order to go forward, not just to keep hold of it for no reason.

“We got too deep towards the end and that inevitably became dangerous. I prefer to defend 30 metres further forward, so I also tried to change the system in order to change that.”

Paulo Dybala seemed very irritated when he was substituted by Gonzalo Higuain.

“I couldn’t care less, to be perfectly honest. The game was telling me to do certain things and I had to make decisions. Paulo can give his response on the field, but it’s pretty normal. I’ve never seen a player leave the pitch looking happy with the idea.”

Sarri was asked about the performances of Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot, who are playing more now with Rodrigo Bentancur suspended and Sami Khedira injured.

“They are improving game by game, so I am pleased with them both, but they also have margins for improvement. Aaron was also able to score a few goals at Arsenal, as it’s in his DNA to run forward between the lines.

“It’s not easy for him in Serie A and he had a series of fitness issues. We knew that we’d have to wait for him and I am pleased that our patience is paying off. I am convinced the same will be said of Rabiot.”

Sarri reveals: “Here is what Dybala told me when I replaced him with Higuain”

Maurizio Sarri, Juventus coach, spoke at the press conference on the eve of the match of the Italian Cup against Udinese.

The Juventus coach, Maurizio Sarri, made some statements before the Coppa Italia match against Udinese, a match valid for the round of 16: “De Ligt played very well against Roma, but he was in shape for a few days now. Tomorrow we have to play a game after three days in which we spent nervous and mental energies. It is not easy to recharge but it is not easy, all the events they have to be a goal. We want to go all the way in every competition. “

Mister Maurizio Sarri then also spoke of the Dybala “case”. The footballer appeared very annoyed after the coach’s decision to replace him with Gonzalo Higuain during the match against Roma: “I talk to him every day, I talked to my staff and the boy, when he left, asked only ‘Why are you taking me away? ‘, referring to me in Martusciello. Today I spoke to him to understand how he feels. We have very strong strikers and they must be exploited “.

Sarri must rotate heavily for Juve’s Coppa Italia fixture against Udinese

Threatened by injuries and stiff competition from Inter Milan, Juve should take it easy in the Coppa Italia.

Merih Demiral tore his ACL and is out for the season. Giorgio Chiellini is somewhere on the road to recovery from his own torn ACL. Matthijs de Ligt may or may not have something wrong with his shoulder, which is the reason Demiral was logging so many starts in the first place. Mattia De Sciglio picked up a small injury in training. Gonzalo Higuain was dealing with a light hamstring issue a few days ago. Cristiano Ronaldo only now seems fully fit after his mysterious, less-than-optimal physical condition for some of the fall. And everyone knows that Aaron Ramsey and Douglas Costa are both a strong gust of wind away from missing six to eight weeks.

This is where Juventus currently stand, and it’s precarious to say the least.

And guess what? The real meat-grinder part of the schedule hasn’t even started yet. The Bianconeri are about six weeks away from the first leg with Lyon in the Champions League Round of 16, with seven games to play before reentering the European competition.

So here’s my advice to Mister Maurizio Sarri: Don’t worry about the Coppa Italia, which Juve jump into tomorrow with a game against Udinese in Turin. Federico Bernardeschi at left back or mezzala? Do it! Daniele Rugani? Yes, please! Marko Pjaca starting on the wing for old time’s sake? Of course.

But first, a brief look at Udinese

When Juve last played Udinese about a month ago, the Bianconeri possessed 66 percent of the ball, logged a ridiculous 24 shots, and were pitching a 3-0 shutout with a Ronaldo brace until the dying moments when the visitors spoiled Gianluigi Buffon’s clean sheet.

At the end of the day, Udinese aren’t very good. They don’t keep the ball well, they’re not overly ambitious or crafty, and they do what all Italian sides can do well when they play three center backs: frustrate the hell out of you. Juve will see those three defenders along with our old pal Rolando Mandragora, and some attacking talent in Rodrigo De Paul, Stefano Okaka, and Seko Fofana. Last time around, Juventus kept Udinese far too disconnected between the midfield and the attackers to be threatened, and Sarri’s men should be able to do the same again tomorrow.

Since their defeat in Turin, though, Udinese have won three straight games against Cagliari (2-1), Lecce (1-0), and Sassuolo (3-0), so don’t expect the visitors to come to Turin without hoping to sock the champions in the mouth. They’re confident and winning games, and they’ll want to improve on their last result against the Bianconeri.

Still, though: Udinese aren’t good. It’s just facts. Juventus could, of course, lose — because this is calcio and anything can happen — but even with the heavy squad rotation I think all of us want to see, one would think Sarri and his side handle business in a professional manner.

Meanwhile, back in Milan

I really, really hate to bring this up, but Juventus are in an absolute dogfight for the Serie A title, and right now things are looking pretty rosy for Inter Milan. The Nerazzurri may have relinquished the top of the table back to Juve, but with no Champions League to worry about they’ll be able to focus all their attention and energy into the title race.

Oh yeah: Inter may be getting Christian Ericksen to add to a midfield with (when healthy) Nicolo Barella, Stefano Sensi, and Marcelo Brozović. They may also be adding our old friend Leonardo Spinazzola from Roma. And they have the most potent one-two punch right now in Serie A in Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku.

Antonio Conte has found the magic recipe alarmingly fast in Milan, and they’re breathing right down Juve’s neck. All of the injuries to the Bianconeri come in a season with the most formidable opponent since Napoli two years ago, and probably more talented and well-rounded (especially if they do, in fact, add Ericksen) than the southern Italian side.

Hold on tight, my friends, because this is going to be a bumpy ride.

Let’s be frank: the squad is too thin for the treble

I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but I really can’t imagine a world in which this Juventus side wins the treble. I really can’t. You can get mad at me and call me a treasonous fan if you feel like doing so, but the squad right now is too thin in terms of health and too inconsistent on the pitch to have the image of the treble seem like anything other than a hallucinogen-inspired fantasy.

My starting 11 against Udinese, therefore, would be as turned-over as possible. Start Buffon, Danilo, Bernardeschi, De Sciglio if he can possibly go, Rugani, Bentancur (still serving a suspension in Serie A), and think about Pjaca — I’m not even joking! Think about resting CR7 and Dybala. Don’t play Douglas Costa for more than 60 minutes. Bring a kid or two from the Primavera side and get them Coppa Italia minutes.

The rest of the season starts tomorrow. Make sure the squad’s top players are ready for the games that matter most.

The Serie A league leaders, Juventus will host Udinese at the Allianz Stadium on Wednesday in a Coppa Italia round of 16 fixture.

The reigning Serie A champions are coming to this fixture on the back of a 2-1 win over AS Roma. Maurizio Sarri’s men will be oozing with confidence after regaining their top spot in the Serie A table. The Bianconeri were knocked out by Atalanta in the quarterfinals of Coppa Italia last season and therefore they will be determined to turn the tide this season.

Meanwhile, Udinese are coming to this game with back to back three wins in the Serie A after their defeat to Juve in the league. They have bounced back quite well and the 3-0 win over Sassuolo last time out will give a lot of confidence to Luca Gotti’s men ahead of this monumental clash.

Both sides have met earlier in the Serie A where Juventus thumped Udinese 3-1 at home and Gotti will be eager to spark a surprise in the Coppa Italia. Ahead of this round of 16 cup tie, we at Hard Tackle will take a closer look at both the teams.

Tactics and Team News

Juventus

Giorgio Chiellini is still sidelined along with German midfielder Sami Khedira as they are recovering from a ligament rupture and knee injury respectively. Merih Demiral and Mattia De Sciglio are also out of this fixture due to a cruciate ligament rupture and abductor injury respectively. Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended for this fixture.

Sarri will look to stick with the conventional, 4-3-1-2 formation as Gianluigi Buffon is likely to replace Wojciech Szczęsny in goal. Daniele Rugani is likely to partner Matthijs De Ligt at the heart of the Juventus defence, while the Brazilian duo of Danilo and Alex Sandro will slot in full-back positions.

French midfielder, Adrien Rabiot may get the nod in this game with Miralem Pjanic and Blaise Matuidi being the mainstays in the middle of the park. The extra man in midfield may allow Maurizio Sarri’s men to control the tempo of the game, as Federico Bernardeschi is set to play in a free role behind the strikers.

Cristiano Ronaldo will spearhead the attack while Gonzalo Higuain will play in a more supporting role. Last time Udinese visited Juventus in December, Ronaldo scored a brace in Juve’s 3-1 win over them.

Probable Lineup (4-3-1-2): Buffon; Danilo, Rugani, de Ligt, Sandro; Rabiot, Bentancur, Matuidi; Bernardeschi; Higuain, Ronaldo

Udinese

Luca Gotti has more options to chose from than his counterpart, as only Brazilian centre back Samir Santos is out with an injury and has not returned to training. Other than that he has a fully fit squad to chose from for this round of 16 cup tie.

Udinese may opt to play with a three-man backline in a 3-5-2 formation. Argentine custodian, Juan Musso is likely to be the man in goal against Juventus, while the three-man backline will be led by William Troost Ekong along with partnered by Bram Nuytinck and Rodrigo Becão. Ken Sema and Jens Larsen are likely to play in wing-back roles providing the much-needed width.

In the centre of the park, Italian midfielder Rolando Mandragora will provide the creativity as Seko Fofana will add more stability to the whole team. Rodrigo De Paul has been in great goal-scoring form and will look to continue that against Juve.

In attack, Kevin Lasagna will partner Stefano Okaka who scored against Sassuolo in their 3-0 win in Serie A. Okaka will look to lead the lines for Udinese and will hope to find loopholes in the hosts’ defence.

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Musso; Becão, Troost-Ekong, Nuytinck; Larsen, De Paul, Mandragora, Fofana, Sema; Lasagna, Okaka

Key Stats

  • Both sides have met a total of 96 times with Juventus winning 63 matches compared to Udinese’s 12. However, the Old Lady have had the upper hand in recent times, winning the last five matches comfortably.
  • Udinese’s Rodrigo De Paul and Stefano Okaka have scored four goals each and are the highest scorers this season for Luca Gotti’s men.
  • Ignacio Pussetto, who scored the only goal in Udinese’s 1-3 defeat to Juventus in Serie A has now joined English Premier League side, Watford.
  • Both sides had disappointing Coppa Italia campaign last season with Udinese losing out in the third round against Benevento, while Juventus lost 0-3 against Atalanta in the quarterfinals.

Player to Watch

Cristiano Ronaldo

Who else when the Portuguese talisman is in red hot form? Ronaldo has been scoring goals and even against AS Roma he scored from the spot and made the difference between two top teams. He puts in a great shift in attack and creates space for other players like Bernardeschi and Higuain to capitalize and score goals.

The former Real Madrid man tends to take his game to a different level mainly in cup fixtures and will look to continue to do so after last season’s disappointment in the quarterfinals. Also to add to that, Ronaldo has already scored a brace against Udinese in December in the Serie A fixture. So he will take confidence from that match and may replicate a similar performance on Wednesday.

Prediction

Juventus 3-1 Udinese

The Old Lady are in scintillating touch off late and will look to carry on with that form to their cup tie against Udinese. Maurizio Sarri has a lot of quality in his ranks and it will be very tough for Luca Gotti to spark a major surprise.

However, Udinese have also played a good brand of attacking football and players like De Paul and Okaka have been amongst goals and they will look to take the attack to Juve. But we at Hard Tackle feel that Juventus may run out with a 3-1 win over Udinese and progress to the quarterfinals of Coppa Italia.
