Nedved: 'Juve must face Porto with conviction'

PORTO vs JUVENTUS | UEFA Champions League UCL | PES 2021 Gameplay PC - YouTube

Dec 14, 2020

Juventus are drawn FC Porto in the last 16 of the Champions League and Vice-President Pavel Nedved expects two ‘difficult games’.

The 48-year-old said Juventus are happy to have reached the knockout stages as group winners, but he stressed that all teams remaining in the competition can provide a stern test for the Bianconeri.

The former winger pointed out that Juventus were eliminated by Olympique Lyonnais in the last 16 in 2019-20.

“It’s nice to reach the second phase, but it’s also a very difficult one to face,” Nedved told the club’s official website.

“Everyone can put you in difficulty. In this phase of the Champions League it’s tight, all the opponents are strong and we saw it last year, when we went out against Lyon.”

Nedved said Juventus must show the same determination against FC Porto as they did against Barcelona in the last round of fixtures.

“I know their coach Sergio Conceicao well, he was a teammate of mine and plays with a very organised 3-5-2. ...........

Juventus look to Alvaro Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo in this showdown with Atalanta, who drop Papu Gomez after his row with Gian Piero Gasperini.

This is a huge test for the Bianconeri and also an opportunity for La Dea to get back on track in Serie A, as both sides have booked their places in the Champions League Round of 16.

Paulo Dybala got his first Serie A goal of the season in last week’s 3-1 win away to Genoa, but he’s returned to the bench here in favour of Morata and Ronaldo.

Weston McKennie is becoming increasingly essential to Andrea Pirlo’s midfield, with Rodrigo Bentancur and Federico Chiesa also starting.

Giorgio Chiellini and Merih Demiral remain on the treatment table.

Atalanta are currently overshadowed by the massive falling out between coach Gian Piero Gasperini and captain Papu Gomez.

There are reports the break is not recoverable and the star is due to leave in January, so although he is in the squad, he is only on the bench. ...........

HT 1-0: Chiesa cracker breaks Atalanta

Immagine

Dec 16, 2020

A stunning Federico Chiesa solo effort has given Juventus the half-time lead, but Atalanta had several good chances to draw level.

Alvaro Morata pounced on a back-pass when Cristian Romero was caught napping in the opening minutes, but Cristiano Ronaldo fired wide under pressure from Jose Luis Palomino.

There was an absolutely bizarre moment when Morata sprung the offside trap and went clear on goal, but instead tried to roll it across for Ronaldo, who was blocked off by Berat Djimsiti, then when it came back to him, the Spaniard for some reason attempted a back-heel flick wide of an empty net.

Matthijs de Ligt made a decisive block on Duvan Zapata, but Arthur came off worse from a three-way collision in midfield and had to make way for Adrien Rabiot.

Juve broke the deadlock soon after with a moment of magic from Federico Chiesa, as Rodrigo Bentancur intercepted a poor clearance, the winger shimmied to get a bit of space against his defender on the edge of the box and curled an unstoppable right-foot strike into the near top corner. ............

Juventus 1-1 Atalanta: Goalkeepers dominate draw

Immagine

Dec 16, 2020

Federico Chiesa and Remo Freuler scored spectacular goals, but the Juventus and Atalanta goalkeepers dominated this 1-1 draw, especially Pierluigi Gollini for saving Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty.

It was a sparkling start to the second half too, as Morata completed a give-and-go with Weston McKennie to force a very brave save from Pierluigi Gollini, who charged down the shot from point-blank range with his face.

Papu Gomez came off the bench and within four minutes had contributed to the equaliser, as on his assist, Remo Freuler skipped away from Rabiot to blast his finish off the underside of the crossbar.

Moments later, the referee awarded a soft penalty when Chiesa went down easily under pressure from Hans Hateboer. However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty was very weak and Gollini was able to smother it dead.

Gollini did even better a minute after that with cat-like reflexes to deny Morata when sent clear by McKennie with a trailing hand.

After that, Atalanta started to take control and pour forward, including Szczesny flying to palm away a looping Cristian Romero header.

It remained wide open, Gollini parrying a Danilo angled drive with his legs, Szczesny beating away the Papu Gomez snapshot and Ronaldo firing over the bar.

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, De Ligt, Bonucci, Danilo; McKennie, Arthur (Rabiot 27), Bentancur, Chiesa (Alex Sandro 75); Morata (Dybala 84), Ronaldo

Atalanta: Gollini; Palomino, Romero, Djimsiti; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Gosens; Malinovskyi (Miranchuk 72), Pessina (Gomez 53); Duvan Zapata (Muriel 72)

Pirlo: ‘Morata made me angry’

Juve, Pirlo: 'Abbiamo giocato alla pari con l'Atalanta. Kulusevski? Non era la sua partita, avrà occasioni. Dybala...' | Mercato | Calciomercato.com

Dec 16, 2020

Andrea Pirlo admits Alvaro Morata made him angry ‘but played a great game’ and insists Juventus need more concentration to win games.

“We played against a strong team, with great rhythm, but on that floor we played on par with them," Pirlo told Sky Sport after Juventus' 1-1 draw against Atalanta.

“We must win those games where we need to make a step forward. Instead, we have sinned a little 'lightness in some cases and we could not win the game. We must take these games home with a little more wickedness and concentration."

Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty in the first half.

“It’s a pity because it would have helped us to go ahead, but these things can happen," Pirlo said.

Juventus have only kept one clean sheet in the last nine games.

“On Sunday we conceded a goal from the only shot we had against. It’s not about goals, it’s about how we face the games. We had many chances to take the lead, we are improving, this game was important in terms of intensity." ........

Gomez hummed the Juventus hymn

Polemiche per Atalanta-Juventus: Il Papu Gomez canta l'inno della Juve in Panchina - YouTube

Dec 17, 2020

Atalanta forward Papu Gomez was caught humming the Juventus hymn last night, but the Old Lady sporting director Fabio Paratici excluded a move.

The Orobici captain started on the bench in the 1-1 draw with the Bianconeri last night, and the TV footage revealed Gomez on humming the Juventus hymn right before kick-off.

The Bianconeri sporting director Paratici told Sky Sport Italia that the reigning champions are not considering signing Gomez in January.

“Absolutely not, he’s a very good player and he is from Atalanta,” Paratici told the broadcaster. “We are very happy with our team.” ........

Pirlo: 'Juventus are physically well'

Andrea Pirlo in vista di Parma-Juventus: Sono ancora arrabbiato

Dec 18, 2020

Andrea Pirlo said Juventus ‘are physically well’ and expects a ‘classic game’ against Fabio Liverani’s Parma. ‘They’re a team that are recovering’.

The Bianconeri are still unbeaten in Serie A this term but sit third in the table, four points behind League leaders Milan after 12 rounds.

Next up is a trip to Parma, who are unbeaten in their last five games across all competitions, drawing three on the bounce in Serie A, including a 2-2 result at San Siro against Milan last weekend.

“Parma are doing well,” Pirlo told Juventus TV. “Since they changed shape, they have been achieving positive and important results like in Genoa and Milan.

“They’re a team that are recovering, have a new coach and you must be careful, also because you play after three days and you will need to regain some physical and mental strength.”

The Bianconeri coach said he expects a ‘classic’ game of football against Fabio Liverani’s Gialloblu.

“I expect a classic game where they will try to defend themselves and counter,” he said. “They have very fast players in the transitions, like Gervinho and Karamoh.

“You have to be very careful when you are in possession of the ball and then develop the game well.” ........

Probable line-ups: Parma v Juventus

Parma vs. Juventus Serie A Betting Tips and Preview

Dec 19, 2020

Gianluigi Buffon, Federico Chiesa and Aaron Ramsey are expected to start for Juventus against Gervinho’s Parma this evening.

It kicks off at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

The Bianconeri have made the trip without injured Paulo Dybala, Giorgio Chiellini, Arthur and Merih Demiral, so there are few doubts that Alvaro Morata will partner Cristiano Ronaldo upfront.

The changes are likely to be in midfield and on the wings, where Dejan Kulusevski is battling with Aaron Ramsey for a starting spot against his old club.

Chiesa is the favourite rather than Federico Bernardeschi on the right flank.

Veteran goalkeeper Buffon should get the nod in goal, perhaps the final time he’ll get to play at the Stadio Tardini, where his Serie A career began. ........

Probable line-ups

Parma: Sepe; Iacoponi, Alves, Osorio, Gagliolo; Kucka, Hernani, Kurtic; Gervinho, Inglese, Karamoh

Juventus: Buffon; Danilo, Bonucci, De Ligt, Alex Sandro; Ramsey, McKennie, Bentancur, Chiesa; Morata, Cristiano Ronaldo

Juventus look to Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvaro Morata and Dejan Kulusevski as they try to end their run of draws against a Parma side that already held Inter and Milan.

It kicks off at the Stadio Tardini at 19.45 GMT.

Andrea Pirlo may be unbeaten in Serie A as a coach, but he has also drawn half his 12 games so far in the competition.

Paulo Dybala, Arthur Melo, Giorgio Chiellini and Merih Demiral are out injured, so there were no doubts Morata would partner Ronaldo this evening.

Gigi Buffon faces his former club, where he was teammates with Enrico Chiesa when little Federico was born in October 1997.

Chiesa Junior is on the bench today, but former Parma player Kulusevski starts, after last season’s loan from Atalanta. ........

HT 0-2: Juventus take control in Parma

Dec 19, 2020

Gigi Buffon needed an early save, but Dejan Kulusevski and Cristiano Ronaldo then gave Juventus a commanding 2-0 half-time lead.

The Bianconeri had drawn half their 12 Serie A games so far this season and visited a Parma side that had already held Inter and Milan to stalemates. Paulo Dybala, Arthur, Giorgio Chiellini and Merih Demiral were injured, so Gigi Buffon and Dejan Kulusevski started against their old club.

Juve broke the deadlock when Alex Sandro rolled a ball across from the left, finding a huge gap in the Parma defence, and Kulusevski was quickest to react by side-footing into the far bottom corner from 11 yards.

Just three minutes later, Alvaro Morata floated a cross to the back post, where Cristiano Ronaldo nodded in with an almighty leap.

Ronaldo almost added a third moments later, his first time right-foot curler skimming the far top corner of the goal, while Buffon got his glove to Riccardo Gagliolo’s pull-back from the by-line.

There was a huge chance for Leonardo Bonucci on the stroke of half-time, but he couldn’t steer on target from five yards after McKennie knocked on a corner.

Juventus made short work of Parma with a 4-0 hammering at the Stadio Tardini, as Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a brace between Dejan Kulusevski and Alvaro Morata efforts. ..........

Juve broke the deadlock when Alex Sandro rolled a ball across from the left, finding a huge gap in the Parma defence, and Kulusevski was quickest to react by side-footing into the far bottom corner from 11 yards.

Ronaldo almost added a third moments later, his first time right-foot curler skimming the far top corner of the goal, while Buffon got his glove to Riccardo Gagliolo’s pull-back from the by-line.

Juve went 3-0 up straight after the restart, as Rodrigo Bentancur won it back, Ramsey released the ball for Ronaldo down the left and a precise left-foot angled drive to complete his brace.

Morata got in on the act late on with a splendid header, as he simply stood still to steer Federico Bernardeschi’s cross into the ground, bouncing just in front of Sepe into the far top corner.

Andrea Pirlo confirms this is the Juventus he wanted to see after crushing Parma 4-0. ‘We are now aware we need this attitude whether we’re against Parma or Barcelona.’

This was probably the best Bianconeri performance of the Serie A season so far, with a Cristiano Ronaldo brace, Dejan Kulusevski and Alvaro Morata on target.

When Parma did create chances, Gigi Buffon was alert and reacting with the saves, despite the fact he turns 43 next month.

It came just days after the 1-1 draw with Atalanta in Turin, which saw Ronaldo’s spot-kick parried by Pierluigi Gollini.

“Ronaldo was quite rightly angry with himself after missing a penalty, but fortunately he didn’t have much time to stew over it and immediately got the chance to show just how much he loves to score goals,” the coach told DAZN. ........

“This evening was the Juventus I wanted to see. We needed to win this game, our strikers Cristiano and Alvaro both needed to get back to scoring ways. We needed to work as a collective and Aaron Ramsey also had a really good game.

“We’re slowly getting to what we all want, not just me, but also the players. I like in particular the high press when the opponents have the ball, we can win it back quickly and that allows us to control the game. That spirit is getting into the lads and we’re improving game by game.

“We are now aware that we’re on the right path, that we’ll have this attitude in every game whether we are against Parma or Barcelona. We must press high, be aggressive and win back the ball so we can control the match.” ........

Andrea Pirlo says Paulo Dybala should return to the Juventus squad after an injury while Arthur will miss tomorrow's game against Fiorentina.

The Argentinean did not travel with the rest of the team in the Old Lady’s winning trip to Parma on Saturday due to a muscle injury, but he should be included in the Juventus' squad list to face Fiorentina tomorrow. “He trained a little bit with the group and a little bit apart today, he should be able to join us for the game,” Pirlo told Juventus TV.

“Demiral is feeling better while Arthur will miss the game, he still feels pain after the knock he picked up against Atalanta,” he added.

"Fiorentina are going thorugh tough times, but they are a very good team. They have a physical player like Vlahovic and one with great class such as Franck Ribery. They will defend deep and try to hit with counterattacks, we need to be careful." ........

Official: Juventus-Napoli will be replayed

Andrea Agnelli: "Rispetto l'Atalanta, ma senza storia internazionale e con solo un anno positivo è in Champions. Non so se è giusto" - Il Fatto Quotidiano

Napoli have won their appeal against the defeat to Juventus, so the game will have to be replayed and the point penalty is revoked.

The fixture had been abandoned rather than called off on October 4 when Napoli did not travel to Turin for the fixture.

Napoli were punished with an automatic 3-0 defeat and also docked one point for not attending the planned match.

The Partenopei had argued they were ordered not to travel by the local health authority (ASL) due to two positive COVID-19 cases in the group, for Piotr Zielinski and Eljif Elmas. ........

Juventus will look to continue their unbeaten start to the Serie A season when they welcome struggling rivals Fiorentina to the Allianz Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Bianconeri have registered six victories and six draws from their opening 12 league matches under Andrea Pirlo, and recent history suggests the home side will add to that tally given the Viola haven’t picked up a win in Turin since 2008.

It also doesn’t help that Fiorentina enter Tuesday’s match winless in their last eight Serie A matches as new coach Cesare Prandelli continues to search for his first victory since taking over in November.

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, De Ligt, Bonucci, Alex Sandro; Chiesa, McKennie, Bentancur, Ramsey; Morata, Ronaldo ........

HT 0-1: Fiorentina stun 10-man Juventus

Fiorentina have the half-time lead in Turin thanks to an early Dusan Vlahovic counter-attack, while Juan Cuadrado was sent off for Juventus.

The Bianconeri missed Giorgio Chiellini, Merih Demiral and Arthur Melo, while Adrien Rabiot sat out a last-minute suspension after Napoli won their appeal against the decision to award Juve a 3-0 victory on October 4. That Week 3 fixture will now be played in January, so Juve went from 27 points to 24 with a game in hand. The Viola were in crisis, although back-to-back 1-1 draws had stopped the rot under Cesare Prandelli.

It was the perfect start for Fiorentina, as Franck Ribery’s through ball sent Dusan Vlahovic running, he out-sprinted Matthijs de Ligt and kept his cool to dink the finish over on-rushing Wojciech Szczesny. It was Vlahovic’s third goal in as many games, but also the first Viola goal from open play since December 7 against Genoa.  ........

It went from bad to worse for Juventus, as Juan Cuadrado went in very late and extremely high, studs-up on Gaetano Castrovilli’s shin. The referee booked him, but after viewing again on VAR, the decision was inevitable for a straight red, the fifth dismissal Juve had in Serie A this season.

Juventus 0-3 Fiorentina: Viola domination in Turin

The day started badly for Juventus and got progressively worse, as they lost their unbeaten record, falling 3-0 at home to Fiorentina with Juan Cuadrado sent off.

The Bianconeri missed Giorgio Chiellini, Merih Demiral and Arthur Melo, while Adrien Rabiot sat out a last-minute suspension after Napoli won their appeal against the decision to award Juve a 3-0 victory on October 4. Another ex-Fiorentina player, Federico Bernardeschi, was introduced in place of Alvaro Morata for the second half. Cristiano Ronaldo’s diving header found the back of the net, but he was flagged offside.

Ronaldo also went down in the box under a Castrovilli challenge, but the referee waved play on and VAR did not intervene.

Chiesa stung Dragowski’s gloves at the near post, as Juventus increasingly took the initiative despite being down to 10 men. However, they shot themselves in the foot yet again with a comical own goal.

Biraghi’s cross from the left for Christian Kouame at the back post found Bonucci for a fresh-air clearance, so the ball instead bounced off Alex Sandro and into the net to double Fiorentina’s lead.

Moments later, Juventus had penalty appeals rejected when Dragowski spilled the ball, Bernardeschi tried to pounce and went down in a sandwich with the goalkeeper and defender. VAR decided not to intervene and the referee was confident again that he’d seen it.

Fiorentina made it 3-0 with Ribery robbing Bonucci to spark the counter, Biraghi rolling across from the left and Martin Caceres – who had a fantastic game against his old club, both defending and attacking – met it to tap in from six yards.

It went from bad to even worse when Matthijs de Ligt limped off with a muscular problem.

Pirlo: 'Juve heads already on the holidays' :103:

Donkere Dinsdag' voor Juve: spelers volgens Pirlo al in vakantiemodus - Voetbal International

Dec 23, 2020

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo said the Bianconeri ‘were thinking about the holidays already’ and failed their approach against Fiorentina.

The Old Lady ended the year with a 3-0 defeat to Cesare Prandelli’s Viola and thus lost their first game in Serie A 2020-21.

“It leaves a bitter taste in the mouth,” Pirlo admitted at a press conference. “We hoped to end 2020 with a win, an important performance.

“But we approached the match badly, without the attitude of wanting to win at all costs. So, it’s difficult. The situation needs to turn you when you are 10 and it didn’t happen.”

But Pirlo is not too concerned and said it’s normal for any team to have an off day.

“The team are very competitive. It happens to have a bad day, but the team are strong and knows where they want to go.

“In the next few days, when we resume, we will start again with desire and determination to achieve our goals.”

The coach pointed out the decisions going against Juventus make the players ‘irritated’.

“It’s a trend for 12 games now, even the players can get angry now and again,” he said. “Since the beginning, they are not going our way and the images are in front of everyone’s eyes. ...........

“Today, the attitude was wrong. We were thinking about the holidays already and it can’t happen. We had to close 2020 with a win and it didn’t happen.”

Andrea Pirlo's Juventus face a key test of their ambitions to clinch a 10th consecutive Serie A title in a packed January of football in Italy after a stuttering start which has left the holders sixth in the league.

Serie A returns this weekend after the mini-break of the Christmas period with a tight January schedule.

Juventus host Udinese on Sunday before taking on three of the top four this month, with six Serie A fixtures in addition to Italian Cup and SuperCup commitments.

The two Milan clubs - the only teams apart from Juventus to have won the league in the past two decades - are on top as they look to bring the title back to Lombardy.

AC Milan are flying high one point ahead of Antonio Conte's Inter with Roma in third, six points off second place.

Juventus are sixth, 10 points adrift of top spot, but having played a game less.

After Udinese, Juventus visit AC Milan in the San Siro next Wednesday before hosting fourth-placed Sassuolo in Turin followed by a trip to play Inter.

Despite topping their Champions League group, Juventus have struggled for consistency on the domestic front, relying on Cristiano Ronaldo's goals.

The Portuguese striker has scored 12 of Juventus's 25 league goals this campaign.

In the league, they have six draws and six wins, falling to their first league defeat of the season 3-0 to Fiorentina at home before Christmas.

Pirlo: 'Never again, Juventus'

ANDREA PIRLO INTERVISTA PRE PARTITA JUVENTUS-UDINESE - YouTube

Jan 2, 2020

Andrea Pirlo assures he gave his Juventus players a good talking to after the Fiorentina defeat. ‘I never want to see that performance again.’

The game with Udinese kicks off on Sunday at 19.45 GMT.

The Bianconeri saw their 2020 come to a surprising finale with the 3-0 home defeat to Fiorentina.

“We got back together for training on Monday and I saw a team eager to get back out there after a bad performance,” Pirlo told JTV.

“It’s a difficult game coming up, as Udinese are in a good period of form, are physical, organised and dangerous on the counter-attack.

We’ve got to focus the preventative marking on their strikers and the midfielders who push up.

“We already know Roberto Pereyra well, as he was part of our squad here, so it’s going to be a very difficult match.”

Juan Cuadrado is suspended, having been sent off early into the 3-0 loss to Fiorentina, while Arthur Melo, Merih Demiral and Giorgio Chiellini have resumed training.

“We talked about that game and everything was wrong about it, from the attitude to every detail. It was a bad way to end 2020. We had a good meeting where we discussed our future objectives and what happened, so it was a productive encounter.

“I never want to see that performance again. We’ve improved in many aspects lately, but I am convinced we can do far better.” .............

Juventus vs. Udinese match preview

Juventus v Udinese Match Preview and Scouting -Juvefc.com

Jan 3, 2020

It took a couple of hours on the Saturday before Christmas for Juventus’ uphill trek to try and get back to the Serie A mountain top to go from a slight incline to one that resembles the kind of hike you see at Yosemite National Park if it gets any worse than where it’s at now.

There have been a lot of factors as to why Juventus sits 10 points off the Serie A lead as we quickly approach the official midway point of the 2020-21 season. And knowing that 2021 is here — and now the resumption of play — that doesn’t mean there’s going to be some magic solution. Or any kind of solution that will show up any time soon.

All we know is this: Juventus has the kind of schedule in January that offers little rest at most that we just saw during this hectic and essentially never-ended December when more than a couple days of rest seemed like a blessing from the Pope.

But the difference between December 2020 and January 2021 is quite noticeable to anybody who has been paying attention to this Juventus season of late: Andrea Pirlo’s squad is very much the ones now doing the chasing rather than the team being chased. They will enter the first weekend of 2021 in sixth place, with the loss against Fiorentina and Napoli’s appeal being successful being quite the 1-2 punch to the gut to end 2020.

Because of it, Juventus trails league leaders AC Milan by 10 points. They trail Serie A’s second-place team, Inter Milan, by nine points. They are closer to 10th place than they are first place — which isn’t exactly something we’re used to around these parts over the course of the last decade or so.

And after Udinese visits Allianz Stadium on Sunday night for the first game of the new year, the two Milan sides will also be lining up against Juventus over the next two days. There’s no denying that Juventus need to win Sunday to put the visions and everything that has come with it regarding their faceplant against Fiorentina before Christmas, but it’s the point in schedule — as well as the position in the table — where Andrea Pirlo’s team needs to do something, anything, to show us they are deserving of being contenders for the Scudetto.

We’ve been saying it for two weeks now, but the fact that Juve’s room error is now gone and the trend of dropping points will coincide with the Scudetto run ending at nine seasons.

Juventus can’t afford to do what they’ve done against the mid- or bottom-table teams. Not this month. Not with Milan and Inter on the schedule within a matter of days. Not even against Udinese, which is far from a good team but the kind of squad that continues to be the side that sees Juve struggle with.

Udinese fit the profile of the kind of club that Juve has dropped points against over the course of the first three months of this 2020-21 campaign. They’re the definition of a mid-table team that doesn’t have anything all that impressive or that has anything that jumps off the page that might worry you. They won two straight games going into December ... and then have dropped points in their final three games of 2020.

The schedule in January is not quite the 10 games in 30 days we just saw Juventus go through, but it’s close. It’s certainly one that has more importance to what is standing in the way of Juve extending their title-winning streak to 10 years.

Juventus won’t completely eliminate the deficit between themselves and Milan in one or two rounds of fixtures. Not even a head-to-head matchup will do that. But playing the way they have been playing, with as many starts and stops as an old pickup truck, won’t see them make up any of that ground any time soon.

Pirlo knows things have to change. The players know things have to change. The fans, no matter how vocal, know things have to change. And it has to happen in a hurry during this month of January because of who’s on the schedule. and what the standings currently look like.

For better or worse, it all begins Sunday night against Udinese

Let’s hope the 48 hours nearly two weeks off actually paid off and is the thing that helps Juventus turn things in the right direction for once and for all this season.

TEAM NEWS

  • No Juan Cuadrado as he serves a one-game suspension after he picked up a red card against Fiorentina two weeks ago.
  • Even though he was held out of the Fiorentina game in large part due to the Napoli appeal decision, Adrien Rabiot will be suspended for this game against Udinese. We thought he would serve that suspension against Fiorentina, but Juve weren’t able to make it stick and he’s now out for another game when we thought he wouldn’t be. Fun, right?
  • Based on the videos from training the last few days, Matthijs de Ligt looks like he’s good to go after having a late-game injury scare against Fiorentina prior to the holiday break. There were a few rumors here and there at the beginning of the week that Pirlo could rest de Ligt even if he’s 100 percent healthy with Milan next up on the schedule, but they’ve died down since then.
  • Also back training during the short holiday break: Giorgio Chiellini, Merih Demiral and Arthur Melo. While none of them are being tipped to start against Udinese, it is a nice thought to have at least some depth at the central defense spot. .............

Alvaro Morata has been left out of Juventus squad list to face Udinese this evening.

The Old Lady have just announced their squad list for this evening clash against Udinese and the Spaniard is not available for the game.

The Serie A giants have revealed the former Atletico Madrid striker is not in the squad due to a muscle strain in his right thigh, which he felt during yesterday's training. ............

Juventus need to get back on track with Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Federico Chiesa against Rodrigo De Paul’s Udinese.

Andrea Pirlo’s men had a dismal end to 2020 with the shock 3-0 home defeat against old rivals Fiorentina, made worse by Juan Cuadrado’s red card, meaning he is suspended this evening.

So is Adrien Rabiot, because the Week 3 ‘win’ over Napoli was revoked on appeal, meaning it will have to be played and the ban was never completed.

Chiesa and Aaron Ramsey take the wide roles, with Danilo and Alex Sandro as full-backs.

Alvaro Morata is not even in the squad due to a muscular problem in training yesterday, so Dybala gets a rare start alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. ............

HT 1-0: Ronaldo and VAR, Juve smile

Cristiano Ronaldo has given Juventus the half-time lead over Udinese and Rodrigo De Paul saw his goal disallowed.

Cristiano Ronaldo curled wide and Aaron Ramsey missed a sitter when set up by Federico Chiesa, firing it straight at Juan Musso from point-blank range.

Moments later, Rodrigo De Paul sprinted away from Leonardo Bonucci, combined with Kevin Lasagna and fired in to complete the move. However, it was disallowed using VAR for De Paul’s handball at the start of the attack.

Instead, Juventus took the lead when De Paul was caught napping by Ramsey on a throw-in and Ronaldo pounced, sprinting into the box to bend it around Musso into the far bottom corner with his right boot. ...........
