  3. Juventus 2 - Monza 1: Initial reaction and random observations As the final whistle sounded on a frigid Sunday night at the U-Power Stadium, you wouldn’t be mistaken to hear a collective sigh of relief from plenty of Juventini watching on. I know I was one of them, with the sense that Juventus’ first win in 43 days was very much secured but was also a total grind to get to that point where three points were finally secured again. ............ The streak of four straight draws in league competition is officially a thing of the past with Juve’s 2-1 win over a Monza side that took the field at the bottom of the Serie A table. Juventus, on a night when they were far from their best, made a Nico Gonzalez goal right before halftime stand during an incredibly nervy second half when it looked the final score would be anything but what it ended up being. Yet, even with Monza — a team that has some of the worst attacking numbers in the league — putting Juventus’ defense under on a regular basis after the halftime break, a team that was bending did not fully break even though it was very much trending that direction. No matter how they got there, it’s three points that were very much needed. ............ We haven’t had the chance to say Juventus have won back-to-back games much at all this season in all competitions, with the wins over Cagliari in the Coppa Italia and Sunday’s victory over Monza being the first time since Sept. 28 and Oct. 2 in which Juve have won two straight games. And in a way, it’s fitting that it’s a Gonzalez goal that decides it because those two games, against Genoa and RB Leipzig, are the last two games that the Argentine started prior to the trip to Monza. ............ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS RIP to the draw streak. I think it’s safe to say I won’t miss you one single bit. We were back to being able to count the number of outfield players available off the bench with one hand. Good times. good times. Injuries are fun and everybody loves them. Second straight game in which Michele Di Gregorio had to make a save within the first minute. At least the save against Monza was a lot easier than the kick save he made middweek in the Coppa. We know about the Ex Effect and how that can come into play sometimes, but what do we call it when the son of a former Juventus player scores against them? Samuele Birindelli, unfortunately, now has thinking about all that. ............ Juventus had 62% of the possession, but Monza finished with the advantage in total shots, 8-5. Just as one would expect when there’s such a possession swing in one direction, right? Six of Monza’s eight shots came from within the Juventus penalty area — which shows you just how much Juve’s defense was struggling to find their footing after the Bianconeri went up 1-0. ............ It will never cease to amaze me how easy Kenan Yildiz makes controlling the ball with his chest look. Just totally no big deal at all. He does it over and over again, and it looks somewhat effortless at this point. Then he goes and runs at a defender a second later and it is all one fluid motion. This boy is good, but you probably knew that already. If the plan is to having Gonzalez play more in the No. 10 role and Koopmeiners a little deeper, it’s going to be quite interesting to see how Yildiz and Nico start to play off each other. We know Francisco Conceição is going to do his thing out on the right and try to trick and flick opposing defenders into oblivion, but there’s a lot of interchangeability possible between Gonzalez and Yildiz based on how they like to play. Just stay healthy now, Nico. ............ I’m happy that Andrea Cambiaso is back and now has a week to get fully match fit again to be ready to return to the starting lineup against Fiorentina. It will be nice to have a couple of fullbacks actually available again. ............ Then again, this Juve season continues to be somewhat confusing sometimes, so maybe we should have totally expected something like that to happen. I’m just glad Juventus won. That’s pretty much the biggest takeaway form this one that you can have. The streak of draws is over. They got three points again. It’s been a while. 4. McKennie and Nico Gonzalez ‘happy’ to take new Juventus positions Nico Gonzalez and Weston McKennie insist they are ‘comfortable and happy to continue’ in a variety of different roles for Juventus ‘Professor’ Thiago Motta. ............ “I am very happy, firstly because it was too important that the team won. After the injury, getting back to the field is the most wonderful feeling. We are on the right track and must continue like this,” said Nico Gonzalez. Having used Teun Koopmeiners in the trequartista role with limited success, in the last couple of games Thiago Motta has moved Nico Gonzalez there, while some are also calling for Kenan Yildiz to take that position. “I am usually a winger, everyone knows that, but if I have to play in goal to help the team, then I’m happy to do it,” added the Argentina international. “I told the coach that I feel comfortable there, so I am happy to continue.” ............ “The victory was the most important thing, as it was tough to have that many draws. The three points are good for us, for the fans, our family to help us all have a nicer Christmas,” McKennie said. “Scoring a goal or providing an assist is not the most important thing, it’s about the team getting the win.” ............ It was noted that McKennie refers to the coach as ‘Prof’ – the Italian term for a teacher, short for Professor – while he also joked with Nico Gonzalez about the Argentine’s singing. “It is also important during difficult moments to have moments where you smile and laugh, he has this great South American energy, he’s good to have around.” . 5. Thiago Motta to continue Juventus experimentation with new roles Thiago Motta sees progress from Juventus in their 2-1 win away to Monza, but confirms he will continue experimenting different players in that tricky trequartista role. ‘It depends.’ The Bianconeri badly needed a win in the top flight after four consecutive stalemates and they ended that 43-day wait for success at the U-Power Stadium in Monza. ............ It was the first time in all competition that Juventus had started Teun Koopmeiners, Nico Gonzalez, Kenan Yildiz, Francisco Conceicao and Dusan Vlahovic together. “Nico Gonzalez and McKennie are open to taking roles that they don’t always hold, but they do it very well because they have a high level and it is a pleasure for a coach to work with lads who have this attitude”. ............ “We have always struggled against teams that defend and go on the counter. We needed to kill off the game, this is part of the growth process, taking the extra risk against these teams and potentially allowing counter-attacks,” continued Thiago Motta. “We were in the position to do the transitions with quality in the second half when we took the lead, but we didn’t do it well enough.” ............ “It depends on their form and the kind of match we want to play against the opponent. Nico Gonzalez can do it very well, I see him in training and he already played in many roles in his career. When someone can have many different roles, it means he pays attention to what his teammates do, he is special and wants to improve himself all the time. “Nico Gonzalez can play on the right or left, as a centre-forward, but I also see him doing well there. As I said, I only ever use players in a role if they are convinced that they can do it.” ............ “We only look at the table at the end of the season. Before that, we take it one game at a time and try to aim for the maximum result against every opponent,” insisted Thiago Motta. . 6. Juventus confirm Koopmeiners injury scare in Monza Juventus coach Thiago Motta confirmed that Teun Koopmeiners was taken off at half-time against Monza with an ‘adductor issue.’ ............ When he was replaced by Khephren Thuram for the second half at the U-Power Stadium in Monza, DAZN reporters asked Thiago Motta for an explanation. “He felt something in his adductor harden. We decided not to risk it,” confirmed the coach. ............ Although this is the final game before Christmas, Juventus have a packed fixture list coming up and do not want to risk doing further damage to one of their most valuable players. They will host Fiorentina on Sunday December 29, then open the Supercoppa Italiana against Milan in Saudi Arabia on January 3. If they win that, then Juve will also play the Supercoppa Final against either Inter or Atalanta a few days later. Serie A then resumes with Torino and Atalanta away, then hosting Milan on January 18. . Read more -> https://football-italia.net/juventus-confirm-koopmeiners-injury-scare/
  7. Juventus player ratings v Monza – Two players earn highest score Juventus battled their way to a determined 2-1 victory over Monza in Serie A this evening, ending a challenging stretch and showing flashes of both grit and quality. ............ Starting XI Michele di Gregorio – 7.0 Faced a handful of threats from Monza and made some solid saves. However, there was little he could do about their goal. Nicolo Savona – 6.5 ............ Federico Gatti – 7.0 A strong showing in defence, leading the backline well and managing Monza’s key threats effectively. Pierre Kalulu – 7.5 The best defender on the night for Juventus. Kalulu not only defended resolutely but also carried the ball out of defence with confidence. Weston McKennie – 8.5 Starting at left-back, McKennie displayed incredible versatility and even managed to score. His adaptability was key throughout the game. Manuel Locatelli – 7.5 Another commanding performance from Juventus’ midfield general, who continues to grow into the role with maturity and poise. Teun Koopmeiners – 7.0 Had an impactful first half, contributing to Juve’s control of the game and the scoring. Subbed off at halftime, hopefully not due to injury. Francisco Conceição – 7.5 Conceição was full of energy and directness, constantly causing problems for Monza with his runs and creativity. Kenan Yıldız – 8.0 Another impressive performance from the youngster, who looked threatening every time he had possession. His potential is shining through. 8. Juventus beat Monza to secure first Serie A win in over a month Juventus secured a 2-1 victory over Monza this evening, ending their winless run in Serie A. Building on their midweek triumph, Juventus started brightly, dominating the game from the outset. Weston McKennie opened the scoring after just 14 minutes, giving the visitors a deserved lead. Taking the lead is one thing, but could Juventus maintain and extend it? The answer came less than ten minutes later as Monza equalised through Samuele Birindelli. ............ Nicolás González was the next to strike, capitalising on a loose ball to score for the second consecutive match. The Argentine forward’s sharp instincts proved crucial, but it was a different story for Teun Koopmeiners, who was substituted at halftime for Khéphren Thuram after a lacklustre showing. Eager to extend their advantage, Juve began the second half strongly. The lively Kenan Yıldız forced an excellent save from the Monza goalkeeper, continuing to trouble the opposition with his energetic play. Francisco Conceição was another standout performer, causing havoc for Monza down the right flank. Despite Juventus’ attacking intent, they failed to add a third goal, leaving Monza with opportunities to threaten on the break as the match progressed into its final stages. ............ . 9. Lamentarsi non cambierá in ogni caso il risultato di stasera. Quindi non serve a niente.
  10. Why Thiago Motta will play Nico Gonzalez as attacking midfielder instead of Yildiz Juventus coach Thiago Motta will field Nicolas Gonzalez as an attacking midfielder against Monza while Kenan Yildiz will resume his duties on the left wing. The Bianconeri won’t accept anything less than three points from tonight’s contest at the U-Power Stadium, especially after settling for draws in their previous four Serie A fixtures. Therefore, Motta is expected to field an ultra-attacking lineup, with three attacking players supporting Dusan Vlahovic, while Teun Koopmeiners starts in a deeper role than usual, forming the double pivot with Manuel Locatelli. Almost all sources expect Francisco Conceicao to start on the right wing, with Yildiz on the left, and Gonzalez playing in the hole in what will be his first start in almost three months. The Argentine made his return to action in Tuesday’s Coppa Italia tie against Cagliari, marking it with a stunning goal. ............ There are several reasons behind Motta’s choice, beginning with the teenager’s outing against Cagliari. The manager was reportedly unimpressed with the Turkiye international in the central role, so he prefers to play him on the wings. ............ Moreover, the Motta expects his wingers to track back to support their teammates in the defensive phase, something that Yildiz has managed to do thus far, while the recently returning Gonzalez might not have too much energy to burn at this stage. . 11. Two Juventus players risk missing Fiorentina with yellow-card ban Two Juventus midfielders must take extra heed this evening in Monza if they wish to participate in next weekend’s clash against Fiorentina. ............ Manuel Locatelli and Nicolo Fagioli must be very careful, as they’re only one booking away from a one-match suspension. According to Serie A rules, five yellow cards constitute a one-man ban, while the Italian duo have each accumulated four already. Motta will be particularly worried by Locatelli’s situation, as the 26-year-old has now become a part of the team’s backbone, making the Regista role his own. The former Sassuolo man is impeccable at shielding the backline, while his distribution has been noticeably improving as of late. With Douglas Luiz ruled out of action and Weston McKennie forced to serve at full-back amidst the injury crisis, the Juventus coach would loathe to lose another midfielder for the big showdown against Fiorentina, especially since the Tuscans are ahead of the Old Lady in the standings, not to mention the great rivalry between the two clubs. ............ . 12. Juventus probable lineup vs Monza: Motta to unleash Five-star attack Juventus will reportedly adopt a more attacking starting lineup when they clash heads with Monza this evening. ............ Teun Koopmeiners will play in a deeper role, starting alongside Manuel Locatelli in the double pivot, thus dropping Khephren Thuram to the bench. This will allow Nicolas Gonzalez to return to the starting formation for the first time in over two months. The pink newspaper expects the Argentine to occupy the attacking midfielder slot behind Dusan Vlahovic, while Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao maintain their usual roles on the wings. We can expect the trio behind the striker to constantly interchange positions. For his part, the extremely versatile Weston McKennie will be set to start at left-back, as Danilo’s availability remains unclear after suffering a sprain in recent days, while Andrea Cambiaso has only just returned to the squad following a two-week absence. ............ Juventus Probable XI (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio (Perin); Savona, Kalulu, Gatti, McKennie; Locatelli, Koopmeiners; Conceicao, Gonzalez, Yildiz; Vlahovic. . 13. AC Monza vs Juventus: Preview and Prediction Juventus will aim to set the record straight with a win over AC Monza as Thiago Motta will be desperate not to lose any more ground in the title race. AC Monza are yet to register their first win on home soil in Serie A this season, and embattled boss Alessandro Nesta will hope Sunday will be the turning point in their season when they host Juventus. So far, the club’s board have kept faith in the legendary Italian defender to keep the club afloat in the top flight, but a few more bad results could spell the end for him. AC Monza are winless in nine games across all competitions, which does paint a grim picture for their immediate future. ............ Mounting a credible title challenge is already looking like an uphill task for Juventus following yet another draw in the latest league outing, which was also their fourth in a row in Serie A. The Bianconeri failed to capitalise on the momentum from the win over Manchester City, as they barely escaped with a draw against bottom-placed Venezia last weekend. Dusan Vlahovic was on point to tuck away a late penalty in second-half injury time to salvage a point, which was Juventus’s tenth draw of their Serie A campaign. They remain unbeaten in the league but only have six wins to show for their cause, which has so far hurt their ability to mount a serious challenge for the title. Thiago Motta will look forward to another league game with the same hope of securing three points. Only this time with more dropped points, Juventus could start fading away from being relevant in the title challenge, considering they are already nine points off leaders Atalanta. Team News & Tactics AC Monza ............ Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Turati; Izzo, Mari, Carboni; Pereira, Bondo, Bianco, Kyriakopoulos; Caprari, Ciurria; Mota Juventus Some of the injuries Thiago Motta has to contend with could come to define Juventus’s season, given how many key players he could miss, particularly in the defence. Juan Cabal and Gleison Bremer are out for the season, while the likes of Arkadiusz Milik have not featured at all this term. In midweek, Motta used midfielders Manuel Locatelli and Weston McKennie at the back, but Federico Gatti’s return should change that against Monza. Nicolo Savona and Danilo should feature in the full-back roles, while Pierre Kalulu and Gatti will play centrally on Sunday. Locatelli will return to the midfield alongside Khephren Thuram there. However, Motta will still lean towards caution with his midfield options as Douglas Luiz and versatile star Andrea Cambiaso are still some short of full-match fitness. Nico Gonzalez has also returned to training, and it remains to be seen whether he’s involved straight away, as Francisco Conceicao is still seen as the starting right winger ahead of the Monza clash. Dusan Vlahovic is expected to lead the line for Juventus, with Kenan Yildiz and Teun Koopmeiners set to feature in the other attacking positions. Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Savona, Gatti, Kalulu, Danilo; Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic Key Stats AC Monza have failed to win their last eight matches in Serie A. Monza have yet to win a Serie A game on home soil this season. Juventus are undefeated in their last 24 matches in Serie A. Juventus have drawn their last four Serie A matches. Player to Watch Dusan Vlahovic There is no other player to look at in this Juventus side when it comes to Serie A games, as they desperately need answers on the frontline despite having most of their injury-related issues at the back. In any case, Vlahovic once again came in for a clutch moment as he tucked away a crucial penalty against basement club Venezia, who came as close as anyone to inflicting a first league defeat for Thiago Motta this season. ............ Prediction AC Monza 0-2 Juventus Monza will come into this clash at the back of a dreadful home record this season and key injuries threatening to hamper their chances of survival. In any case, they are not in the best of form to enter this match with the conviction of getting something out of it despite Juventus’s form. Motta will be desperate to have the cup form into the league, as the Juventus boss is desperate for a win after four consecutive Serie A draws, and to stay relevant in the title race if there is still one in the making. The Bianconeri have the players and quality to see off a hapless Monza side and even keep a clean sheet in the process. . 14. Moggi makes prediction on Vlahovic future, discusses Juventus transfer plans Former Juventus sporting director Luciano Moggi weighed in on the club’s transfer plans ahead of the January transfer session, while discussing the future of Dusan Vlahovic. ............ Although Juventus have yet to taste defeat in the league this season, they have settled for a whopping 10 draws in the first 16 rounds of the season, setting unprecedented figures. Nevertheless, Moggi urges patience from the supporters, as he believes the team still lacks the required experience to compete for the biggest honors. “Juve is a new team. We will need another year of patience,” said the 87-year-old. “For me, the team is not competitive yet. Ten draws are too many. They have youth but they need experience. Having leaders is very important.” ............ “His departure is not on the table. Vlahovic will stay at Juventus, also by virtue of his massive contract.” ............ “Juventus will definitely sign a defender. Then in the market, there are also possibilities. If a striker were to arrive, given that Milik still has some for a while, it wouldn’t be a bad addition.” .
