Here's the club's brief statement, courtesy of juventus.com, from back in December: While his team-mates were out training, Kwadwo Asamoah was in Barcelona to undergo arthroscopic surgery designed to fix torn cartilage in his left knee. Operated on by Dr. Cugat and accompanied by club doctor Causarano, the Ghanaian is expected to return to competitive action within three to four months. That original recovery timeline has been pushed back several times, with the player finally making it back to Vinovo in the earlier part of September. Asamoah featured in a warmup game for Juve too, against fifth division side Cheraschese on the 4th of September.The Bianconeri won 3-1 with goals from Alvaro Morata, Dybala and Stefano Pellini. Asamoah was supposed to have returned to training with his teammates, but his delayed return to the pitch resulted in Juventus being forced to exclude him from the UEFA Champions League squad list which was due on September 1st. Since then he has been training with his teammates but was mysteriously not named in the squad for last weekend's game at Genoa. There are a couple of possibilities for the versatile player when he does make it back into the team. The signing of Alex Sandro during the summer mercato means he most likely will not be used in the left wingback position again. With both Claudio Marchisio out again and no sign of Sami Khedira returning to the lineup anytime soon, there are certain sections of the Bianconeri fanbase clamoring for the Ghanaian to slot in at the regista position. However, debutant and new signing Mario Lemina looked very composed in the middle of the park against Genoa so the pressure is off Massimiliano Allegri for the time being to use Asamoah in that role, in the Seria A at least since Asamoah is not even in the Champions League squad. To add more mystery, unsubstantiated rumours circulating are that Juve could be pursuing a swap deal with AC Milan in January for Asamoah with Nigel de Jong in the January transfer window. Putting aside your opinions of the Dutchman in the Old Lady's colours, getting an enforcer feels like a throwback to the days of Felipe Melo and the consecutive seventh-place finishes.

That's the state of the players' injury troubles. One player returns, another one heads back to the training room to begin a rehabilitation program. Rinse and repeat. (Insert "Injuries are stupid" thoughts here.) The latest injury-hit Juventus player is stirker Mario Mandzukic, who came off injured late in Sunday's 2-0 win over Genoa. The final verdict after medical examinations is that the big Croatian will miss the next three weeks — games against Frosinone, Napoli, Sevilla and Bologna — with a thigh injury. Here's what Juventus' official website had to say about the matter: Missing out on training today were strike duo Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata, who were both subjected to medical examinations after reporting injuries during the win over Genoa. The Croatian forward's tests revealed a first-grade tear of the bicep femoris muscle in his right thigh, which will require a recovery period of 20 days. And writing about them all the time makes them even worse. But I guess the good part in all of this is that there is some good injury news to report, and that involves the status of Morata, who had to come out of the win over Genoa in the first half with a groin injury. The obvious beneficiary of this new Mandzukic injury will be Paulo Dybala, who has started only one of Juve's six games in all competitions this season. Going into their Champions League opener at Manchester City, they were fairly heavy underdogs but played an organized game and scored two fantastic goals to come from behind and take a crucial early victory. After only managing two defeats and a draw in their first three league games, the victory—which accompanied a surprise tactical shift to a 4-3-3—was a massive confidence boost. The team's many new parts came together a little bit more, and it was hoped Sunday's game would take Tuesday's positive start and consolidate it into real momentum. Much to the relief of the team's fans, they delivered on that promise, even though it wasn't as convincing as some might have liked—a 2-0 win away at Genoa. The Bianconeri were expecting a stern test. In the days before the game, full-back Martin Caceres pointed out to JTV (h/t Football Italia) the difference in Italian and English styles and predicted there would be a lot less space for Juventus to operate in than they had in Manchester. The Uruguayan's statement proved prophetic. Playing a typically organized game, Gian Piero Gasperini's men defended well and didn't give the Bianconeri much room to create. Juve did start fast, with Alvaro Morata testing Eugenio Lamanna a mere 20 seconds into the match. But after that, things bogged down for a bit. The new-look attacking trident of Morata, Mario Mandzukic and Juan Cuadrado took some time to get into the game, and for a while, Genoa had the majority of possession. It didn't help matters when Morata—fresh off his fantastic winner against City—pulled up with an apparent abdominal injury after 22 minutes. He was replaced by Roberto Pereyra, and that seemed to signal a change. Pereyra consistently found holes in the defense, and as he pulled the Grifone out of place, Cuadrado began to do the same on the other side. Slowly, they began to cause more problems. It was Pereyra who put Juve in for their first goal of the afternoon. His cross-shot from the right channel was perfectly weighted for Paul Pogba, who stayed onside and acrobatically tried to volley into the net. Nothing has been easy this year so far, so it was fitting that what should have been an easy goal turned strange when Pogba mishit it and banged the ball off the underside of the crossbar—only for it to rebound off Lamanna's knee and into the net for an own goal. Six minutes later, it was Cuadrado's turn to put a stamp on the game. Bursting through on a breakaway, Armando Izzo had no choice but to haul him down, earning his second yellow card—and an early shower—two minutes before the break. It was then when Juve showed there was still room to improve. Up a man for 47 minutes, they heaped pressure on Genoa's goal, but no one was able to come up with a convincing effort to test Lamanna. Cuadrado scurried around the field and dragged defenders with him, but he also showed the glaring weakness in his game: a severe lack of directness. The Colombia international is certainly skilled, but he frequently gets too cute for his own good. He takes dribbles around far too often, executing a series of pointless stepovers while actually being shepherded away from the danger zones or allowing defenders to get into his shooting lanes. All this extra flair can win the odd free kick or penalty, but it sometimes looks like that's all Cuadrado is trying to do rather than actually, you know, score. Lionel Messi is the best player in the world and hardly ever bothers with such extra fluff. He identifies where he wants to go, gets there and finishes. That's the kind of forward that has scored throughout Juve's history like Michel Platini, Alessandro Del Piero and Carlos Tevez. It's what Cuadrado needs to do more of. Eventually, the penalty that sealed the game was drawn not by Cuadrado but Giorgio Chiellini, who was in an advanced position after a corner kick. Pogba slotted past penalty specialist Lamanna, and any hope Genoa had of leaving the Marassi with a point was all but extinguished. It wasn't the dominating victory some were hoping for, but three points are three points, especially given the way the season has begun. Despite the win, the players are still very much feeling each other out. But the positive signs are there. The defence—which had previously failed to keep a clean sheet since the Supercoppa Italiana in August—looked its old unbreakable self. Gianluigi Buffon didn't have to face a single shot on target. Mario Lemina made his Juve debut and showed flashes of the player who has drawn some comparisons to a young Arturo Vidal. Pereyra looked the best player on the field after a horrendous start to the campaign. Slowly but surely Juventus are coming together. A midweek date with Frosinone is next before a crunch away game at Napoli. Having managed unlikely success in the Champions League against a team they themselves feel can win the tournament, the Bianconeri have recovered their confidence, but more importantly, their cynicism. While in Europe, the Juve players worked together and showed great discipline and unity. Against Genoa, there were guilty of relying on excellent movements from certain players but the game from the unit as a whole seemed disjointed as it has done previously. Once again, Massimiliano Allegri was unable to field his best starting lineup, aware that his men are required to play several games in the next few weeks, he decided to rotate again. So while defensively the side is improving, offensively there are still a few kinks to iron out. Genoa played as expected. Masking the lack of sheer talent with grit and energetic running, they pressed their opponents high up the pitch and ran relentlessly to stifle the opponent and claim the upper hand. However, energy can only take you so far as they were not really capable of creating any patterns of play that scared the Juve back line, allowing Gianluigi Buffon to take the night off. Keeping the Bianconeri at bay, they still believed in their cause up until the team went down to 10 men. Then their task of containing talent, despite the lack of fluidity, proved too difficult. Despite the win, it's clear Juve are still far from the levels they reached last season. However, they do seem to be improving with each game, as on this occasion several goal-scoring opportunities were created with only the final ball proving to be problematic. With Juan Cuadrado available and capable of taking on opponents in front of him, he creates problems and has proved effective for the side with his particular set of skills making the difference. More than that, his attitude and confidence is inspiring those around him. Sadly for the team, the offensive movements are not being finished off in style as Paul Pogba missed a few chances while Mario Mandzukic seemed to be suffering with his confidence. Having scored midweek, one thought the former Atletico Madrid striker would be firing on all cylinders, but his style of game and the work he does for the team is almost forcing him into being a little blunt when the time comes to score. Dropping deep, occupying space and bringing others into play have robbed the forward of his usual precision, but it will take him time to find the right balance and better understand how to manage his energy levels so that he can impose his own strengths. The Italian league, despite its reputation, is physically demanding, and coping with the training schedules as well as maintaining freshness is by no means an easy feat. Thankfully, a lucky own goal allowed Juventus to take the lead. Pogba struck the ball and what should have been an easy finish somehow became a complicated affair, bouncing off the goalkeeper before it went in. After the goal Juve were better able to operate without the pressure piling on their shoulders, and their game improved, with several more chances being created until an overwhelmed Genoa went down to 10. Experience is vital in any game, but the lack of it was the reason behind the Rossoblu's defeat. They were of course unlucky, and Juve's second goal, which arrived by way of a contentious penalty, certainly didn't help matters. However, experience helps when it comes to managing games and emotions to ensure little mistakes don't end up costing the team dearly. Mario Lemina is one who will need time to hone his skill and learn how to play the game as opposed to simply fulfilling his positional tasks. Despite managing a good debut, the youngster was guilty of several unnecessary fouls that needn't happen. He must learn how to perform his defensive duties without conceding fouls in dangerous areas or wasting possession. Perhaps the yellow card he received was harsh, but after receiving it his game truly suffered. From then on, he couldn't operate as he liked. One player who has improved during his time with the Bianconeri is Roberto Pereyra, who made all the difference on the day. Coming on for Alvaro Morata, who went off injured, the Argentine dribbled marvellously and showed off all his technical ability while working for the team, creating opportunities and penetrating a tough Genovese back line with relative ease. After so many wonderful performances he perhaps deserves to start a game, as with a little more consistency he could grow even more. With Pereyra helping his side claim the win, Juventus will feel a little less pressure going forward and perhaps in time that will translate into more success and more points. They visited Liguria looking for momentum and confidence in the domestic championship. Maybe it wasn´t pretty, but Juventus captured their first victory of the season with a solid exhibition against the Grifone. Massimiliano Allegri presented a 4-3-3 formation, similar of what he displayed this past Tuesday in Manchester. The biggest highlight in the lineup was the debut of Mario Lamina, as the youngster started along with countryman Paul Pogba and Stefano Sturaro in the middle of the park. In the other side, Gian Piero Gasperini, a well-known attack-minded coach, deployed a 3-4-3/3-5-2 arrangement with Diego Perotti playing as a faux prima punta. On paper, the two managers promised a very entertaining game. The match began extremely even with the two sides attacking and exchanging some unclear opportunities. However, at the 20th minute, Allegri´s plans for the match changed briskly when Álvaro Morata had to leave the tie due to a groin injury. Max chose Roberto Pereyra to replace the Spaniard. Fifteen minutes later, "El Tucumano" proved his worth in a blooper-like play. Pereyra dribbled Issa Cissokho and executed a brilliant cross that found an unmarked Pogba at the far post. The Frenchman volley crashed the bar and ricocheted off Genoa goalkeeper Eugenio Lamanna, after the rebound the ball found slowly the back of the net. Juventus was ahead. Shortly after, Juan Cuadrado intercepted the ball cleanly in the midfield, he accelerated towards Lamanna, but Armando Izzo fouled him. This action represented the second yellow card for the Genoa's defender, who must departed the game earlier and left his side with 10 men on the pitch. The second half was dominated by the Bianconeri, who harassed Genoa early and often. Juventus showed patience in the early stages, clinically testing the Rossoblu's defense. At the 58th minute Diogo Figueiras -who just entered in the game- innocently fouled Giorgio Chellini inside Genoa's penalty area. Pogba took the ball and executed the penalty with a lot of class. After this, Allegri's men managed the match smartly. It's hard to remember a really treating play by Genoa; nevertheless Mario Mandzukic and Cuadrado could easily put their names on the scoreboard with better finishes. Juventus was superior and deserves the victory. Now, it's time to hunt the championship leaders. LE PAGELLE Buffon 6 The Juventus captain was hardly tested. However, San Gigi always make everything looks easy. Litchsteiner 6.5 Combined well with Cuadrado in the right flank. Kept Diego Laxalt in check. Barzagli 6.5 Signature game for the "Great Wall of Barza." He was a metronome in the Bianconeri's defense. Chiellini 7 Won the penalty that meant Juve's second goal. Played a great game in defense. Evra 6.5 Managed the game with composure and experience. He enjoyed an easy afternoon. Sturaro 6.5 Stefano was a Ninja in this match. He seems invisible, yet he had a strong influence in Juventus midfield. Lamina 6 The French kid played a solid game in his debut; he covered a lot of grass and had adequate ball skills. My only concern is that he committed a lot of fouls. Pogba 7 A true leader in the pitch, always looking for the ball. He was a participant in both goals and executed the penalty masterfully. Cuadrado 7 The spark of Juventus' attack. It looks like he's really enjoying his time at Turin. Provoked fear and havoc in Genoa's defense. Mandzukic 5 Unfortunate performance by the Croatian. Looked slow and without concentration. He failed badly in a couple of scoring chances. Morata 6.5 Looked prepared to have another brilliant performance. He was forced to leave the pitch due to an injury. Subs Pereyra 7.5 Great game by the Argentinian. Entered in a very delicate situation and responded exceptionally. He was relevant with his playmaking ability and crafted Juventus first goal. Man of the match for me. Hernanes s/v Entered for Lamina in the final minutes. Helped to close the game with his skills and smarts. Zaza s/v Entered for Mandzukic and played his first official minutes with Juventus. Rarely touched the ball. Coach Allegri 6.5 Kudos to Max, who stayed with the 4-3-3 formation and debuted Mario Lamina. He reacted smartly to Morata's injury calling Pereyra. Once again the Livornian coach proved that he could adapt to any circumstance. Things I think I think Quoting our own Danny Penza: "injuries are stupid." Let´s hope Álvaro Morata is fine. I really miss you, Carlitos. This match should/could be in the cooler earlier. I'm a Mandzukic believer, but Juventus needs to be more cynical in attack - and not just today-. Lamina played a solid game today and proved that he can contribute. Please, Bayern, stay away! Juventus played with a pack of hounds in their midfield. They were really hard to pass. Winner: Paul Pogba (Juventus) Over the first few games, Paul Pogba had looked a little out of sorts, failing to match the impact he had previously been able to provide for the Juventus midfield. Massimiliano Allegri believed that came as a result of attempting to take on too much responsibility after a summer of upheaval. “In the end, Pogba is a 22-year-old guy,” the coach said at a recent press conference. “A 22-year-old cannot act and play like a 30-year-old. So he must play as he knows how to play and exploit his skills, of which he has many.” On Sunday he would do just that, forcing Genoa goalkeeper Eugenio Lamanna into conceding an own goal to break the deadlock, then doubling Juve’s advantage with a confidently taken penalty. Loser: Armando Izzo (Genoa) While Pogba was everywhere here, it was an afternoon to forget for Armando Izzo, as the Genoa defender endured a horrible outing against the reigning champions. The 23-year-old was shown his first yellow card shortly before the half-hour mark and was subsequently sent off after 43 minutes for pulling down Juan Cuadrado. Pogba - Played a vital role in both goals, as it was his close-range volley that hit Lamanna before rolling into the back of the net before he doubled his side’s lead with a well-struck penalty in the second half. 16 Juan Cuadrado - Started slowly but burst into life midway through the first half and was absolutely excellent from then onwards as he caused the Genoa defence continual problems with his pace and skill. 17 M. Mandžukić - It was a disappointing afternoon for the striker, who looked bereft of confidence in front of goal and failed to take advantage of several good opportunities. 9 Álvaro Morata - Looked bright at the start of the game but was unfortunately forced off the pitch due to a nasty-looking injury after just 22 minutes. Substitutes 37 R. Pereyra - Was excellent after replacing the injured Morata and set up his side’s opening goal with a brilliant cross-cum-shot. Sep 20, 2015 Juventus gained their first victory in Serie A after four tries thanks to an own goal and a penalty, at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. After 37 minutes of a balanced match, a shot from Pogba first hit the post and then bounced off Genoa’s goalkeeper Lamanna. The first goal cut Genoa off from the match, as five minutes later they ended up one man down as Izzo got sent off with two yellow cards. In the second half a generous penalty called in favour of Chiellini allowed Pogba to score his first penalty in Serie A and secure the victory for Juventus. Genoa Eugenio Lamanna – 6 – Unlucky - The own goal is pure chance, as the ball bounces on him. Concentrated during the rest of the match. Issa Cissokho – 5 – Bad - Constantly surpassed on his side by Cuadrado and not very present in attack. After Izzo was sent off played in the centre. Nicolas Burdisso – 5.5 – Busy - Tried as much as he could to stop Juventus’ attacks but in vain. Sebastian De Maio – 5 – Insecure - On his side Pereyra did almost everything he wanted. Made an horrendous pass in the second half that almost gave Juventus the third goal. Armando Izzo – 5 – Naive - Cuadrado drove him crazy for all the first half and after two evident fouls he is sent off at the 43rd minute. Tomas Rincon – 5.5 – Jolly - Not very present and his bad pass was the origin of Figueiras’ penalty. Blerim Dzemaili – 5.5. – Confused - Few memorable plays, including a good free kick in the first half. Apart from that, he didn’t leave a mark on the pitch. Replaced by Pandev after 57 minutes. Diego Laxalt – 6 – Lively - One of the few to resist the pressure of Juventus. Positive also in attack, where he had some good moments with Tachtsidis. Olivier Ntcham – 6.5 – Surprise - The young Frenchman continues with his impressive start of the season, playing well even in an unfamiliar position. Diego Capel – 6 – Retrieved - Showed himself to be in a good condition for the first time this season. Diego Perotti – 6.5 – Pillar - He is the source of all Genoa’s play but didn’t manage to leave a lasting mark. Out after the first half for Figueiras. Substitutes Diogo Figueiras – 5.5 – Dangerous - Replaced Perotti after the first half. Caused the penalty for 0-2. Goran Pandev – 5.5 – Harmless - Replaced Dzemaili after 57 minutes. Good movements but nothing really dangerous. Panagiotis Tachtsidis – 6 – Positive - Replaced Diego Capel after 65 minutes. Had a positive impact on the match creating two dangerous chances for himself and Laxalt. Juventus Gianluigi Buffon – 6 – Relaxed - Didn’t have many shots to save. Stephan Lichtsteiner – 6 – Push - He played well but not memorably. Had more to defend than attack. Andrea Barzagli – 6.5 – Dedicated - Usual good defence and perfect command of the defensive game of Juventus. Giorgio Chiellini – 6 – Risky - He is often risking to be booked or to concede a penalty but is hard to pass and gained the penalty for 2-0. Patrice Evra – 6.5 – Solid - A good match, concentrated in defence and dangerous in attack. Stefano Sturaro – 6 – Strong - Less present than Tuesday in the Champions League but nonetheless played with confidence. Mario Lemina – 5.5 – Rookie - In his debut with Juventus, the former Marseille player is a bit too impetuous. Some sparks of an interesting player though. Substituted after 75 minutes for Hernanes. Paul Pogba – 6.5 – Scorer - The two goals have their mark. However, he hit the bar on the first goal and in general tried to hard for the trick rather than playing with substance. On the way to come back as the star player Juventus desperately need him to be. Juan Cuadrado – 7 – Whirlwind - He is everywhere. Izzo went crazy trying to stop him. Almost all the offensive play of Juventus started with him. Mario Mandzukic – 5.5 – Slow - He is too out of the game and looked slow. Replaced by Zaza after 82 minutes. Alvaro Morata – 6 – Injured - Started well but after 20 minutes he was out injured. Substitutes Roberto Pereyra – 6.5 – Twelfth-man - Replaced Morata after 22 minutes. With his pace and technique he was a constant danger for Genoa. Made the cross for Pogba that led to the goal. Hernanes N/A - Replaced Lemina after 75 minutes.
