  1. Juventus 1 - Bologna 1: Initial reaction and random observations That wasn’t what we were hoping for entering the weekend. So, what could Juventus do for an encore after last weekend’s big win over Udinese to open the 2023-24 season? Unfortunately, it was a crash back to reality. That meant a lot of the same problems that we’ve seen the last couple of years, and a stark reminder that Juventus is still very much the flawed team we all pretty much expected them to be before a single minute was played this season. Not even an improved second-half performance was enough for Juventus to get past Bologna on a rainy Sunday night at the Allianz Stadium. There really wasn’t much room to get any worse after a first half that saw Juve look completely out of whack and basically the polar opposite of what we saw in the opening 45 minutes just seven days ago. For all the good that happened to open the game last Sunday in Udine, it was a totally different story in Turin for Juve’s home opener — so much so that the sold-out crowd at the Allianz was rather grumpy as their favorite team headed into the locker room down 1-0 and looking all kinds of out of sorts no matter if it was in defense, midfield or attack. ....... It’s not an over-exaggeration to say just how bad the first half for Juventus was. They had a 60-40 advantage in terms of possession, but what they did with that possession was virtually nothing, which the 0.04 xG they recorded in the opening 45 minutes only confirming what your eyes saw. Vlahovic, a man known to not hide his emotions while out on the field, was completely isolated up top. The press was there, but the results that came out of the press last weekend wasn’t anywhere close to being replicated. The midfield was all over the place — and not in a good way. The defense, one that is prone to a mistake or two no matter how well Juve’s playing in other areas of the field, had one of those self-inflicted wounds to give Bologna the lead. ....... Even in the second half and Bologna doing nothing close to what you would consider attacking anywhere close to consistently, Juve still failed to put much on goal. Other than the Vlahovic goal that was called off due to VAR and the Vlahovic goal that stood because there was no need to VAR, the only shot that Juve had Łukasz Skorupski scrambling was Timothy Weah’s long-range bolt. Other than that, it was a lot of hoping and crossing and reverting to a lot of the same things we saw from this team last season. ........ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS I’m still trying to figure out what Alex Sandro was doing on Bologna’s goal. No matter if it’s the over-committing on the pass or trying to be the hero in his recovery only to go crashing into Bremer — who was not looking very good in the minutes after the collision — and leave the left side of the penalty area wide open for Bologna to take advantage of. Yep, all bad. I initially thought it was on Andrea Cambiaso as well, but then when you see that it was just Sandro freestyling all over the place and it’s hard to blame the kid for not knowing what the hell was going on, too. Sandro is the kind of player who is on a very diminished set of skills yet still plays the same kind of way that he did five years ago when he was in his late-20s and still considered a reliable player. He is not that now, but unfortunately Juve have no other left-footed players capable of playing on the left side of the three-man backline in this 3-5-2. ...... Not a great night for Manuel Locatelli, eh? When saying “not great” that might be putting it a little lightly, too — especially in the first half. You know what’s disappointing? When Federico Chiesa doesn’t even attempt a shot. He was more involved in the second half, but that’s still not the kind of performance Juve need from their best offensive weapon. Dusan Vlahovic had fewer touches in the first half (13) than both goalkeepers (15 and 17, respectively). That header from Vlahovic on his header, though ... thing of beauty. Samuel Iling-Junior’s cross on Vlahovic’s goal ... also a thing of beauty. ....... I can understand Paul Pogba trying to do what he can to make something happen late in the game when you’re trying to get the win, but the tricks and flicks weren’t working today. Not one bit. And it’s especially more noticeable when you’re not landing those flicks and they’re resulting in turnovers in front of the penalty area. On the other end of things: Pogba is also able to work himself out of a complete mess with four Bologna players around him and make the pass that set Iling-Junior loose on the left wing to set up Vlahovic. He’s just unique that kind of way. ........ I miss last weekend’s performance. But, this is a Juventus managed by Max Allegri, so when things are good they always seem to come crashing back down to earth quite quickly. 2. Juve snap back to reality, draw with Bologna in home opener All the promise of the opener came crashing down as the same old problems popped up in front of the home fans. After their impressive season-opening win against Udinese, Juventus came into their home opener against Bologna on a high. The question now was whether or not they could build on that victory and make an early season statement that the Bianconeri were going to have a say in how the season would go. The answer to that, at least in the short term, was a resounding no. Lots of Juve’s old problems crept up out of the floorboards against the Rossoblu. The midfield’s passing was absolutely abysmal, constantly giving the ball away and ruining what successes the new-look press produced as quickly as they arrived. Even after Juve upped their level a little in the second half, they looked to have very little idea of how to break down Bologna’s defense, with passes often forced laterally as opposed to the verticality that produced such fine results in Udine. The defense frequently allowed runners in behind, causing havoc and giving Bologna some of their most dangerous chances. In the end, Juve ended up stealing out of their own stadium with a 1-1 draw after trailing for much of the game and equalizing late. But the game produced more questions than it answered, and now leaves next week’s game against Empoli to determine what the team’s form will be going into the season’s first international break. ....... The opening goal can be laid completely at the feet of Sandro. As Ferguson sent an entry pass to Zirkzee, Sandro decided to charge at the Dutch striker despite the fact that he was being marked by Bremer. Ferguson was then gifted a completely free run into the box, while Sandro’s lunge for the ball took out his teammate rather than doing anything to impede his opponent. Zirkzee still had to put the ball through a pretty tight window, but once he did it left Perin completely stranded, and the Scot duly slid the ball past him and into the goal to open the scoring. ...... The script could have flipped in the 38th minute when a cross from Weah struck a sliding Lucumi in the arm and was deflected behind. In seasons past, that would’ve been an immediate penalty, but the center-back was reprieved by a new point of emphasis in the ever-changing handball rule, which stipulates that if a player is actively breaking his fall with his arm he is not committing a foul if the ball hits it. ...... As the teams headed into the locker room for the break the crowd, justifiably feeling like they’d been sold a bill of goods about this team the week before, booed them into the tunnel. The message was sent, and Juve came out of the tunnel looking a good deal better. Chiesa began playing farther out wide, while Cambiaso cut inside him. Danilo and Weah had a similar relationship on the other side, while it looked as though Fagioli and Rabiot had swapped places in the midfield. Juve immediately pinned their opponents back and in just seven minutes they thought they had the equalizer when Danilo’s lofted ball over the top was headed down by Bremer to Vlahovic, whose volley went through Skorupski’s hand and trickled into the net. The celebrations were loud—and short-lived. Referee Marco Di Bello was called to the VAR monitor and determined that Rabiot had interfered with Skorupski from an offside position. It was an incredibly tight call all the way around. Rabiot was clearly trying to get out of the way of the play, he was only offside by a few centimeters, and the keeper had actually gotten his hand on the ball. But Di Bello came back onto the field with his arm raised, giving Bologna a much-needed reprieve. Juve responded to the disallowed goal and for a while put Bologna solidly under siege. ....... Allegri waited until the 66th minute to make his first changes of the game, sending on Samuel Iling-Junior for Cambiaso and Paul Pogba for Fagioli. The Frenchman’s introduction didn’t produce the immediate effect that had been hoped for, and like the man he’d just replaced he showed the signs of a player with a lot of rust on him. ...... It took another 10 minutes before Juve’s efforts finally got them on the scoreboard. It was Pogba who started the move, getting out of traffic and nutmegging Posch, who had made the same mistake Sandro had in the first half, getting sucked into the ball and allowing Iling a free run down the left side. The young Englishman had all kinds of time and space to measure up a cross to Vlahovic, who had made an excellent run into the box and gotten between Lucumi and Tommaso Corazza at the penalty spot. His powerful header skipped once as it passed a flailing Skorupski, finally tying the game. ...... LE PAGELLE MATTIA PERIN - 6.5. Had very little to do but was let down by a huge mistake at the back for the Bologna goal. Otherwise performed his duties as he had to. DANILO - 6. Did his defensive duties well and was often seen moving up the field as Juve chased the game. Completed 91 percent of his passes and led by example on the pitch. BREMER - 6. Made two tackles and two interceptions, including one really good one in the first half that saw him use an overhead kick to deny Ferguson a run on goal. It’s a good thing he was able to get back up after being wiped out by his own teammate on the goal run, but other than that was adequate. ALEX SANDRO - 4.5. If you only looked at the stat sites, you’d be forgiven for thinking Sandro had a decent game, as he paced the team in all defensive categories and even had a pair of key passes. But what was going through his mind when Bologna scored is an absolute mystery. It’s lucky he didn’t hurt Bremer, but he certainly hurt the team. TIMOTHY WEAH - 6.5. Perhaps Juve’s best player on the day. He had a pair of key passes and very nearly scored the equalizer before the hour mark with a screamer from distance. He still needs to take his man on one-on-one when the opposition presents him with the opportunity. NICOLO FAGIOLI - 4.5. Had a couple of positive moments, but mostly looked like a dude who hadn’t had any playing time in preseason and was still knocking off the rust. He took a team-high four shots, but only hit the target with that speculative free kick late in the first half, One of the misses would almost certainly have tide the game had it been on target. He’ll be back to being himself soon enough, but he needs to knock off the rust. MANUEL LOCATELLI - 4. This was an absolutely awful day for him. He only completed 82.5 percent of his passes, and he didn’t make up for that on the defensive end at all. That he somehow managed a pair of key passes was astounding given how terrible the rest of his day was. Games like this drive home how out of place he really is at the regista position. ADRIEN RABIOT - 5.5. The most put-together of Juve’s midfield, although that isn’t saying a ton. He led the team in tackles and had a pair of key passes, but didn’t manage to exert much influence offensively and ultimately was as out of sync as the rest of the team. ANDREA CAMBIASO - 5. Didn’t get as many of the vertical runs to combine with Chiesa as he did last week, and struggled to create offensively against a low block. FEDERICO CHIESA - 5. Tried to get things going but never really had it. Even when he moved out wide in the second half he was often confronted by two defenders. He led the team in dribbles, but other than that had a very quiet night. DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 6. Worked really hard for practically nothing in return from his teammates. Both goals—the disallowed one and the one that stuck—were taken very well, and he looks healthy and strong for the first time in a while. SUBS PAUL POGBA - 5.5. Delivered the pass that ultimately brought Juve level, but was scattershot otherwise and a couple of his missed passes put Juve into some serious problems. At least he didn’t have a trainer come out to look at him. SAMUEL ILING-JUNIOR - 6. An absolutely gorgeous cross for the equalizer elevated a relatively quiet day. Good shift for him off the bench as Kostic is increasingly frozen out. ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 5.5. Took a pair of shots on but couldn’t bring a necessary spark to the game. KENAN YILDIZ - NR. Only touched the ball five times with five minutes left, and didn’t make much impact, although it’s a testament to how highly Allegri thinks of him that he was put into a game like that.; WESTON McKENNIE - NR. Filled in for Weah on the right but doesn’t have the pace his countryman does to pose a huge threat in that position. MANAGER ANALYSIS In a game like this I’d often heap the blame on the manager, but that isn’t 100 percent the case here. I have to admit that, against my expectations, Allegri largely kept the more proactive style that he played against Udinese. The problem came in not executing it as well. Some coaching is in order there — particularly in terms of reducing the space between the forwards and the attack — but if he’s committed to playing like this, then he will be on the right track. Moving forward. That’s not to say Max was blameless. His first subs could have come earlier, when Bologna was truly on the ropes in the early stages of the second half. It feels like his timing decision was dictated by how many minutes the team had determined Pogba had in him, but a fresh pair or two of legs might’ve broken through Bologna sooner and left more time to go for a winner. One last note about Allegri: this was the 110th consecutive league game in which he put out a different starting lineup. That is an absurd number. It goes beyond the idea that a coach needs to accommodate injuries and the need for rest. To go 110 games — nearly three full seasons — without repeating a starting XI at all means he’s tinkering more than is good for the team. One hopes that soon enough, without Europe to worry about this year, that he can settle in to a top lineup and ride it. ..... 4. Juventus vs Bologna 1-1: Vlahovic Salvages Hard-Earned Draw for Bianconeri A resilient performance from Bologna held pre-match favorites Juventus to a dramatic 1-1 draw on Sunday evening. Despite taking the field as outsiders, the visitors put in a remarkable shift to take home a significant point. Juventus surprised everyone on the opening weekend. Amid ominous-looking off-field turmoil, Massimiliano Allegri’s side thrashed Udinese 3-0 at the Dacia Arena. With enthusiasm at an all-time high following a morale-boosting performance in Udine, the Bianconeri fans filled the stands at the Allianz Stadium, hoping for another routine triumph. However, following an underwhelming showing in a 2-0 home loss to Milan last week, Bologna came to Turin in a different mood. Thiago Motta’s side looked disciplined at the back, allowing very few sights of goal to clueless Juventus. But more importantly, they had clear ideas about how to hurt their hosts on the other side of the pitch. Mattia Perin pulled off a decent save to thwart Dan Ndoye’s well-taken low effort from inside the box in the 23rd minute. Juventus didn’t receive the memo. Unaware of the danger, Allegri’s men collapsed moments later as Lewis Ferguson struck home to stun the Allianz crowd into silence and put Bologna in front. Despite taking control of the ball possession, Juventus failed to invent anything meaningful in the final third. ....... The visitors had to learn that the hard way. Only seven minutes after the break, Gleison Bremer headed the ball down to Vlahovic, whose sublime half-volley found its way to the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Serbian striker, VAR cut his celebration short for offside. But Juventus changed their attitude after Allegri’s pep talk in the dressing room. ...... Juventus had the initiative but nothing to show for it. Allegri tried to reignite a comeback by introducing Paul Pogba midway through the second half. When it looked like the home side could be on the verge of restoring parity, Bologna hit on the counter, with Joshua Zirkzee forcing a top-class save from Perin. ...... Iling Junior lifted a perfect cross from the left flank, with Vlahovic finding the bottom corner with a towering header. It was his sixth Serie A goal against Bologna. But it was everything Juventus could rescue from this enthralling encounter. Allegri will have a week to rally his troops for the upcoming trip to Empoli. 15. Three Bologna players that Juventus must look out for on Round 2 Last weekend, Juventus returned home with three points and as many goals in the bag following a prosperous venture in Udinese. So on the back of a dazzling display in the opening round (at least in the first half), the Bianconeri faithful is seeking confirmation when the team hosts Bologna on Sunday for its maiden home fixture of the campaign. With the exception of Mattia Perin who will replace the injured Wojciech Szczesny, Max Allegri should maintain the same formation. ..... 16. Juventus vs. Bologna match preview Juventus has the chance to make it two wins to begin the 2023-24 season — something they couldn’t muster a year ago. It was about 12 months ago. Juventus opened the 2022-23 season with a very good performance over Sassuolo to give them a rather positive start to the new campaign. It provided some hope that maybe, just maybe, things were going to be a little different following a season in which a fourth-place finish and no trophies marked Max Allegri’s first season back in Turin. A week later, I posed a very short yet very important question as Juventus prepared to take the field against Sampdoria at the Luigi Ferraris ... “So ... what’s next?” This is what proved to be next: Juventus’ second game of the season saw them play out a scoreless draw against a Sampdoria side that eventually got relegated and is now being coached by Andrea Pirlo in Serie B. I, personally, would not like to see a repeat of that — the scoreless draw part of it, of course, since Samp was such a disaster last season that relegation only seemed inevitable. ...... So, after Juventus again claimed a 3-0 win to open the season last weekend (although this time against Udinese), it’s time to figure out what’s next for Allegri’s squad that was one of the more impressive performers in Round 1 of the 2023-24 season. That will take place in Turin, with a sold-out Allianz Stadium ready to see what Juventus can do to follow up their bright start to the season when the aforementioned Thiago Motta and a wounded Bologna side come to town Sunday night. It is that win over Udinese in which we saw a different Juventus from the one that was present for much of the 2022-23 season. For the first 45 minutes in which Juve built said 3-0 lead, they were aggressive, they were pressing (in a good way) and they were a team that looked to be brimming with confidence and one that wanted to prove a point. ...... TEAM NEWS Something we have not been able to say very often: Juventus only has one player currently out injured, with Mattia De Sciglio out until the new year after major knee surgery. Or that is what we thought until Max Allegri announced at his pre-match press conference that Wojciech Szczesny will miss Sunday’s home opener after picking up a knock in training. That means after thinking pretty much thinking all week that Allegri was going to break his streak of not using the same starting lineup in back-to-back games since coming back to Juve in 2021 ... he’s about to use a different starting lineup against Bologna. Allegri said that Moise Kean, who has been subject to rumors about his future at Juventus for more than a week now, “has never been out of the squad.” While admitting that Kean has been late to training once and has been dealing with a knock, Allegri said the 23-year-old striker will be available against Bologna. Paul Pogba is “better” and “could be used” against Bologna, according to Allegri. When it comes to his starting lineup, Allegri said he essentially has two decisions to make: “one in the middle and one out wide.” JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH There’s a few different ways we can go with this, but I think the pick is rather simple. That’s mainly due to the fact that the star of last weekend is now the guy who will be lining up against his former club and suddenly with a whole lot more people interested in how he’s going to be playing. The following statement is true: Andrea Cambiaso had one heck of an official debut in a Juventus shirt last weekend. The following statement is also true: Juventus are unbeaten in games that Cambiaso starts while wearing said Juventus shirt. ...... MATCH INFO When: Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023.
