Chiellini to miss friendly

Sep 2, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini will miss Italy’s friendly match against Netherlands on Thursday, it has been revealed this afternoon.

Reports this morning suggested that the Juventus defender would be assessed by the Azzurri medical team after limping out of training.

And national team doctor Enrico Castellacci has claimed that the centre-back has suffered a swollen calf and will sit out the game in Bari this week.

“Chiellini has some pain in his left calf,” he told reporters. “This morning we performed an ultrasound that showed some swelling.

“There’s no damage to the muscle fibres, but just fatigue. He will miss the match on Thursday.”

Chiellini however, should be fit enough to take his place in the XI for the Euro 2016 qualifier versus Norway next week.

Injured Chiellini to miss Netherlands clash

The Italy defender will not be fit for the high-profile friendly
after suffering a calf problem during a training session on Tuesday.

Sep 2, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini will miss Italy's clash with Netherlands on Thursday due to a calf problem.

The Juventus star limped out of a training session on Tuesday with a swollen calf and Italy's team doctor Enrico Castellacci subsequently confirmed he will not be risked for the friendly match in Bari.

Antonio Conte's side are still hopeful the 30-year-old can feature in Italy's opening Euro 2016 qualifying clash against Norway next Tuesday.

"Chiellini has some pain in his left calf," Castellacci said. "This morning we performed an ultrasound that showed some swelling.

"There's no damage to the muscle fibres, but just fatigue. He will miss the match on Thursday. We will try and help him recover for Tuesday."

Italy had earlier confirmed that Inter forward Pablo Daniel Osvaldo (hamstring) and Parma defender Gabriel Paletta (back) will also miss out through injury.

Elsewhere, Stephan El Shaarawy is delighted to be back playing after missing almost all of the 2013-14 campaign through injury.

The AC Milan forward has thanked club boss Filippo Inzaghi and new Italy coach Conte for retaining confidence in his ability.

"I'm glad to be back playing," he said. "I'm feeling really good, physically.

"Inzaghi and Conte have given me so much. I hope to repay their confidence. They have both made me understand that I have ability to do well.

"Both are motivators and can express what they want to the group."

Conte is set to take charge of Italy for the first time since being named as Cesare Prandelli's successor last month.

Italy: SES optimism, Chiellini caution

Sep 5, 2014

Italy team doctor Enrico Castellacci is optimistic for Stephan El Shaarawy’s return to fitness, but casts doubt on Giorgio Chiellini.

The duo skipped the Azzurri’s debut under Antonio Conte against the Netherlands last night, as a precautionary measure for respective issues picked up in training.

For the team’s chief medic, it is still mixed news on whether both can return in time for next week’s match in Oslo against Norway - the start of Euro 2016 qualifying.

“El Shaarawy has had a minor ankle sprain, nothing serious - in recent days he had an worsening of pain so as a precaution we rested him,” Castellacci has explained to reporters today.

“Yesterday evening after the game he has moved quite well, today he will work differently and if he responds well, he could be included back with the group.”

On Chiellini, Castellacci is more cautious.

“He has a minor swelling of the calf, he has had two days off and is a bit better. In the afternoon there will be an MRI - the damage is very minor, but it is in a delicate place.

“After the tests today with the Coach and the player we will decide on what to do.

“Three days ago I told you that there was minimal damage and it was not a major concern - given the delicate position and previous instances, we must be careful and consider thoroughly what to do.

“Each athlete must be evaluated for their past.”

Chiellini out of Norway clash

Sep 5, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini has been ruled out of Italy’s opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway through injury.

The defender picked up a minor complaint in his left calf three days ago and today underwent a scan to ascertain his availability for Tuesday’s qualifying clash in Oslo.

The Italian Football Federation have confirmed in a statement that the scan showed no sign of improvement.

After meeting with Antonio Conte and in agreement with Juventus, the decision has been made to count the defender out of next week’s match.

Chiellini, however, will remain with the Italy squad for the duration of their training programme and begin planned treatment on his injury, in an agreement set between Italy and Juve’s medical staff.

Chiellini leaves Italy camp

Sep 6, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini has returned to Turin on the orders of Juventus after picking up an injury with Italy.

The defender was ruled out of Tuesday’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway with a bruised calf muscle, but the FIGC had stated he’d remain with the squad.

However, today Chiellini was called back to Turin by Juventus, who want their doctors to take care of him.

Claudio Marchisio has already left the Italy training camp in Coverciano, near Florence, because he is suspended for the Norway game.

Chiellini recall 'disappointing' :103:

Sep 6, 2014

Italy team manager Gabriele Oriali was “disappointed” Juventus recalled Giorgio Chiellini from international duty.

The defender’s bruised calf muscle had ruled him out of Tuesday’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Norway, the first competitive test for new Coach Antonio Conte.

Originally the FIGC released a statement that Chiellini would be staying with the squad in agreement with Juventus, but today he was recalled to Turin.

“We’re disappointed Chiellini had to leave,” Oriali told reporters at the Coverciano training ground this afternoon.

“There is a new Coach, who worked with him for three years, and knowing his methods Chiellini could’ve been of use to his teammates.

“Juve changed their minds and asked for the player’s presence in Turin, so we could only accept and stick to the rules.

“What was the official explanation for the change? We didn’t ask and they didn’t tell us. They wanted him back at the club base, perhaps to get him fit again quickly, although at the Nazionale we have very talented medics and physiotherapists.

“Keeping Chiellini here wasn’t specifically Conte’s request, but rather an idea everyone had.

“Should this sudden U-turn be seen as a Juve snub towards Conte? You can translate it any way you like...

“The player was certainly disappointed not to remain in the squad and to miss out on travelling to Oslo. He feels very close to the Azzurri jersey and sets the example along with Buffon, De Rossi and Pirlo.”

Juve slam 'allusive' Oriali

Sep 6, 2014

Juventus defended their recall of Giorgio Chiellini and criticising team manager Lele Oriali’s “allusive comments.”

The centre-back was ruled out of Tuesday’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway by injury and at first the Italy camp stated he would remain with the squad.

Today Juve changed their minds and called Chiellini back to Turin.

Italy team manager Oriali said the Federation and the player were “disappointed” by the decision.

“Should this sudden U-turn be seen as a Juve snub towards Conte? You can translate it any way you like...”

This evening Juventus responded with a statement of their own.

“After the confused issue around Giorgio Chiellini’s release from international duty, Juventus Football Club wish to reaffirm the pledge to collaborate with the Italian Federation, as it historically has done for over a century.

“The statement released on the player last night and the allusive comments from the team manager, Gabriele Oriali, do not change this orientation.

“We cannot enter into open contrast with common sense, nor with the recovery needs of an injured player who cannot be used for the qualifying match in Norway, the closing moment of this Nazionale get-together.”

Chiellini recall was common sense - Juventus

The club were criticised by Italy team manager Gabriele Oriali for taking
the injured defender out of the squad but they insist it was the right decision.

Sep 6, 2014

Juventus have defended their decision to recall Giorgio Chiellini from the Italy squad and questioned comments made by Gabriele Oriali.

Defender Chiellini was ruled out of Tuesday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway due to a calf strain, having also missed a friendly victory over Netherlands on Thursday.

Italy team manager Oriali expressed his disappointment that Juve had performed "a sudden U-turn" in not allowing Chiellini to remain with the national team until the end of the international break.

Juve responded on Saturday by stating that it was common sense for Chiellini to return to Turin.

"Following recent events relating to Giorgio Chiellini's release from the Italian national team, Juventus Football Club would like to reiterate its ongoing commitment to working with the FIGC [italian Football Federation], as it has done for more than a century," read a statement on the club's official website.

"Yesterday's announcement regarding the player's release and the insinuating remarks made by team manager Gabriele Oriali this afternoon do not alter this position.

"Our obligation to supporting the national team cannot run contrary to common sense or the rehabilitation needs of an injured player who is unavailable for the forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifying match with Norway which concludes the national team's commitments."

Juve confirm Chiellini injury

Sep 8, 2014

Juventus have confirmed that Giorgio Chiellini has an edema in his calf and that he will undergo further tests shortly.

The defender complained of the issue at the beginning of last week in preparing to train with Antonio Conte’s Italy squad and missed consecutive days of training as a result.

Then missing the Netherlands friendly on Thursday as a precaution, the player was later ruled out of the Norway Euro 2016 qualifier with what Azzurri medical staff diagnosed as an edema - a build up of fluid - in the player’s calf.

On from calling back the player ahead of what was previously reported as agreed with the Italian Football Federation, the Bianconeri have confirmed that they have subjected him to their own tests today and come to the same conclusion.

The Old Lady reports that Chiellini will continue on his rehabilitation programme before facing further tests in the coming days.

Conte: No Italy-Juve rift

Sep 8, 2014

Italy Coach Antonio Conte has made clear that there is no rift with Juventus over Giorgio Chiellini’s injury situation.

Speaking at his Press conference ahead of Italy's opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway, the CT was inevitably asked about the injured defender, whose earlier-than-agreed return to Juventus had caused a falling out between club and country.

“With Chiellini has resulted this episode, we will need to use this experience to better handle these situations next time, both on the part of ourselves and on that of Juventus,” Conte has considered from the Ullevaal Stadion on Monday night.

“But I am here to unite and not to divide. This is just an incident where there have been misunderstandings but it ends there, because Giorgio was injured and would not have played.

“Any consequences to this case? With Juve there will be no problems, it is right that is a spirit of collaboration [between clubs and the national team] if we want to achieve something important.”

Chiellini: A different approach

Sep 15, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini sees Juventus ready to take on the Champions League in ‘a different approach’, with ‘enthusiasm and desire’.

The Bianconeri are aiming to once more progress to the knockout stages of the competition, as they begin the group stage tomorrow evening at home to Malmo.

Given recent upsets suffered in the previous two editions of the tournament, one of the team’s more experienced men sees a new mentality this term as likely to make a difference.

“There is great enthusiasm on my part, but also from the entire team and the city,” Chiellini has told reporters today.

“And I think that this is the feeling we must keep with us during this adventure - not the desire for revenge or to make up for the disappointment of last year, but just the desire to surprise and to do great things.

“I believe that with these feelings, as well as everything else that we put in place, we can certainly do great things.

“We need a different approach than in the past. Numbers count up to a certain point. Previously we paid for our mistakes and our attitude.

“It will help us to face the competition in another way. Enthusiasm and desire will be crucial.”

Carlos Tevez once more has attention on his notable scoring drought in the Champions League.

“Carlos is a key player for us and it has shown it in every game he has played since arriving. But I think that the important thing is the Champions League and Juve.

“Then, Carlos is the first not to be selfish and he is not interested in him scoring but that the team scores, that he wins with the team. Then, if tomorrow he begins right away as he has begun in the League, we are all happy.”

Juve’s opponents tomorrow night are making their group stage debut in the Champions League, but it doesn’t have Chiellini at ease.

“We do not expect an easy victory, indeed we are aware that it will be a difficult game. We experienced a major disappointment last year and two years ago against Copenhagen and Nordsjaelland and I believe that Malmo may resemble these teams.

“We are preparing in the best way for this game, aware that we could win but that we will only win in fielding the best desire, with great care and great respect for our opponents.”

Chiellini is in line for a return to the first XI following a calf injury sustained whilst on international duty.

“My physical condition is good, since Friday I have trained with the team without any trouble, so I am available to the Coach.”

‘Juve working to reduce errors’

Sep 15, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini believes that Juventus’ strong start to the season is a sign that even they have identified room in which to improve.

The three-time consecutive League champions have begun the season with two wins from two and notably have restricted opponents to just a single shot on target.

At today’s Press conference ahead of facing Malmo in the Champions League tomorrow night, Chiellini was asked what had changed.

“I believe the Coach can also confirm this, but we are working to try to reduce the errors to a minimum,” Chiellini has responded.

“Because even if we have won the Scudetto three years in a row it does not mean to say that we are perfect. Indeed, there is always so much to improve, both individually and as a team.

“We were really very good, we have played two first halves brilliantly, with incredible intensity, where the only flaw was to be winning by the single goal, because we should have deserved at least two.

“We must continue in this way. Certainly every Coach puts at their team’s disposal their knowledge, their own style, so there’s already been some adjustments and we are trying to do as much as possible what the Coach asks of us.

“The important thing is to continue with this defensive solidity because it has been proven over the years mainly in Italy, but also in Europe, that if we do not concede goals, then we are a team that has a thousand weapons to unlock games.

“We just have to keep working in this way and we will have a lot of satisfaction.”

In considering the team’s potentially changed mental approach to the Champions League, Chiellini was asked if there was a willingness to sacrifice a fourth Scudetto in exchange for lifting the European Cup.

“I think it would be foolish to sacrifice anything. Real Madrid went more than 10 years waiting for to experience this glory again, with investments of €100m a player.

“So we are thinking match by match to win what we can win. Hopefully we can win more for many years to come, but I do not think we need to make sacrifices in order to win.”

Chiellini: This Is Just The Start For Juventus

Sep 17, 2014

Centre back Giorgio Chiellini was a relieved man after helping his side to a hard fought 2-0 home victory over Malmo in the Champions Legaue last night.

The Bianconeri struggled to break down their opponent for much of the game, but a Carlos Tevez brace eventually gave Juve the important three points.

“It was not easy to start so well in the Champions League, it was a tough match,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We are delighted that we won, for the goals from Tevez and not having conceded.

“But this is just the start. We have to do well in Europe without easing up in Serie A.”

The tough tackling defender missed the weekend league victory over Udinese, but proved his fitness to play an integral part in his side’s opening Champions League fixture against the Swedes, at the Juventus Stadium.

Chiellini: 'Bring on Atletico!'

Sep 25, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini pleased with Juventus’ start to the season “after an eventful summer” and is targeting Atletico Madrid.

The defender sat down with Juventus TV for an interview after the 3-0 victory over Cesena, which maintained their 100 per cent record between Serie A and Champions League.

“We are happy with this start to the season. It’s an important sign after an eventful summer,” he said of Max Allegri replacing Antonio Conte in the first week of training.

“We had a great approach against Cesena, we deservedly took the lead and kept our concentration levels high.

“Last night a few important players rested, while Vidal returned to the pitch, so there were many good signs.

“At this start of the campaign we are more or less all getting playing time, so we saw once again how important the whole squad is.”

Juve travel to Atalanta this weekend, but Chiellini is already looking forward to the Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid.

“The Champions League has a different physicality compared to in Italy. We started well by beating Malmo, but now we need a great performance in Madrid.”

Chiellini: Juve my final team

Sep 29, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini has reflected on swapping Antonio Conte for Max Allegri at Juventus, Italy’s World Cup wound and ending his career with the Bianconeri.

The defender attended a publicity event this morning and discussed a number of topics, including upcoming matches this week.

“This week we face Atletico Madrid and Roma - it will be an important week, we hope to continue to do well,” Chiellini reflected to those present.

Also on the agenda was Conte’s decision to leave Juve in the summer and Allegri’s appointment in his place. With the former Milan Coach the team have started the season in strong form.

“With Conte it was three incredible years at Juve, we won everything. His departure surprised us, but we were aware that the relationship between the Coach and Juventus would not last forever.

“However, we have immediately created a good feeling with Massimiliano Allegri, we have made ourselves available to continue a journey that began in previous years, to win something.”

Conte is now Italy CT, in place to help the Azzurri move on from a difficult World Cup this summer.

“I am glad that with the Azzurri we have encountered a Coach that we already know.

“Suarez’s bite has healed, but the World Cup is a wound that we will carry with us because it was a big disappointment.”

Chiellini is approaching 10 years with Juventus and was asked what prospects there are in ever leaving to play elsewhere.

“Maybe in another life. I hope that Juve is my final team, I would see out my career here.”

Chiellini: I want to retire at Juventus

The defender has admitted that he cannot see himself playing for any other club before
hanging up his boots, and that he is loving life under new coach Massimiliano Allegri.

Sep 30, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini has revealed that he would like to end his career at Juventus.

The Italy international has established himself as one of the most reliable and versatile defenders in the game since joining the Bianconeri from Fiorentina in 2005.

The 30-year-old has now admitted that he cannot see himself playing for any other team before he hangs up his boots.

“I want Juventus to be my last club and I hope to end my playing career here," Chiellini told reporters on Tuesday.

Chiellini also revealed that he is enjoying life under new Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri, who replaced Antonio Conte at the helm during the summer.

Conte claimed three successive Scudetti after arriving in Turin in 2011 but the Bianconeri have won their first six games in all competitions under former AC Milan boss Allegri and are brimming with confidence ahead of the midweek Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid and Saturday's Serie A showdown with rivals Roma.

“There’s been an immediate mutual understanding forged with Allegri," Chiellini explained.

"We all want to continue the journey we began three years ago and win something at the end of the season.

"We’ve got an important week ahead of us and we hope to keep doing well."

Giorgio Chiellini rescues himself and Italy against Azerbaijan

Oct 10, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini went from hero to zero, and back again, as his late header rescued Italy three points from their Euro 2016 Group H qualifier in Azerbaijan tonight.

The Juventus defender was the only name on the scoresheet as he gave the Italians a half-time lead which was cancelled out when he found his own net on 78 minutes.

However, Chiellini popped up with another at the right end to earn Italy their second successive victory of the campaign and ensure that they maintained their 100% record under new manager Antonio Conte.

Claudio Marchisio and Leonardo Bonucci were each twice denied by the busy Kamran Arhayev in a first half in which the visiting keeper made five saves to keep the domiannt Azzurri at bay.

Arhayev's best save kept out Ciro Immobile's close-range strike, but the Azerbaijan stopper undid all of his good work when he flapped at a 44th-minute corner to allow Chiellini to head into an empty net.

Chances continued to fall Italy's way upon the resumption of play, but Arhayev responded strongly to his costly mistake to keep out Alessandro Florenzi, while Simone Zaza had a shot blocked from 10 yards.

It appeared as though Italy's inability to find a second would prevent them from closing out what was expected to be a routine victory when Chiellini bundled an Azerbaijan corner over the line on 76 minutes.

The centre-back made amends within six minutes by powering home a header from eight yards after his Juve teammate Sebastian Giovinco had picked out his run with a delivery to the near post.

Giovinco nearly made the final moments more comfortable for Conte's men when he hit the crossbar in stoppage time, but Chiellini's eventful night ended with only his name on the scoresheet.

Chiellini: It went wrong for Italy up front

After edging a narrow win over minnows Azerbaijan, the Juventus defender believes
that the spirit is strong in the Azzurri camp even if their accuracy is not.

Oct 10, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini conceded that Italy's attacking left a lot to be desired after they needed a late goal from the defender to beat Azerbaijan 2-1 on Friday.

The Juventus centre-back stole all of the headlines by netting the first goal just before half-time, bumbling in the equaliser for the visitors - who mustered just two shots all evening - after 77 minutes and then saving himself and Italy from embarrassment by heading in the winner in the final 10 minutes.

Following the narrow European Championship qualifier victory in Palermo, Chiellini said Antonio Conte's reign continues in a positive fashion because of his goals and laughed off his own-goal by insisting he could not dodge the ball.

"The ball came out of nowhere, I couldn't get out of the way!" he told Rai Sport. "Oh well, I did everything tonight - good and bad!

"It would have been a shame if it had finished with their equaliser, we risked compromising the win we deserved.

"It is an important victory for our new era. We got it wrong up front with our finishing, but our attitude is the right one."

Italy are back in action as they pursue one of 23 available places in the Euro 2016 finals with a trip to Malta on Monday. They top Group H after two games, ahead of second-place Croatia on goal difference.

Chiellini: 'England, Roma and MLS'

Oct 18, 2014

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini revealed how he nearly joined Roma, the Premier League and now wants to experience America.

The centre-back sat down with La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport for a lengthy interview in which he confessed to several near misses in his career.

“I could’ve gone to the Premier League in 2007, which wouldn’t have been a bad thing. Quite simply, I had Juve in my destiny.

“If that hadn’t been the case, then I would’ve gone to Roma in 2004, seeing as the deal was all agreed.

“When I arrived at Juventus, Giuliano Giannichedda was like a big brother to me. I was afraid to even speak, but he taught me the balance you need in this world.

“He’d say ‘Enjoy it when you can, sacrifice at all times and learn to understand the moments you’re going through.’ He was so right.”

Chiellini still has time for a different experience and hinted at a future in the MLS, having turned 30 in August.

“I’d like to remain in the football world, but I certainly don’t want to become a Coach. It’s too stressful and you have to move around so much.

“I see retirement as a far away moment, but sooner or later I’m going to have to think about it. It seems more likely to be at 34-35 than 38.

“Hopefully I’ll hang up my boots after an experience in the USA, just to see what it’s like to live there.”

Chiellini: Suarez sending off could've saved Italy

The Italy defender acknowledged that his first thought following
the incident at the World Cup was to ensure Uruguay were reduced to 10 men.

Oct 18, 2014

Giorgio Chiellini revealed he pushed for Luis Suarez to get sent off after being bitten by the Uruguay striker at World Cup 2014 because he was convinced it would have turned around Italy 's fortunes.

Suarez remained on the field as a Diego Godin goal ultimately gave Uruguay a 1-0 victory in Natal, condemning the Azzurri to a shock group-stage exit.

The 30-year-old stopper tangled with Suarez before showing the referee what appeared to be teeth marks on his shoulder and Chiellini admits he was attempting to convince referee Marco Rodriguez to produce a red card.

“At that moment I wasn’t thinking of just telling tales on Suarez, but of reaching the last 16 of the World Cup,” Chiellini told La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport .

“I was certain that if he was sent off, Uruguay would never have got through to the next round, just as I always thought with Zinedine Zidane [who headbutted Italy's Marco Materazzi] on the field perhaps the 2006 World Cup final would’ve gone a different way.”

Suarez is set to make his debut for Barcelona in the Clasico against Real Madrid next weekend after his four-month ban from all footballing activities was reduced.

Chiellini went on to laud Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the greatest striker he’s faced in his career and revealed that, despite some fierce altercations with the Sweden international, no animosity remains between the two.

“Ibrahimovic remains the best of them all, as he can change a game by himself,” he added.

“With him we used elbows, threats and after a post-Calciopoli edition of Juventus-Inter were close to getting into a fight. At the end of the day, we had a good rapport though.”

Chiellini Snubbed Premier League For Juventus Stay

Oct 19, 2014

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini spoke in an interview about an important turning point in his career that saw him stay in Serie A and snub an English Premier League switch.

Chiellini joined Juventus from Fiorentina in 2005, making 261 appearances for the club since, but did snub a move to England after joining the Bianconeri.

“It could have gone and played in England,” the 30-year-old told La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport. “It could have happened in 2007.

“But I had a destiny with Juventus, otherwise I would have gone to Roma instead as the deal was all done there.”

Chiellini has been a valuable servant of Juventus during his nine-year spell in Turin, rising up the ranks to become a fan-favorite and even securing vice-captaincy.

Suarez: 'I was wrong on Chiellini'

Oct 25, 2014

Luis Suarez had to “accept what you’ve done is wrong and apologise” after biting Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

The Uruguayan striker avoided the referee’s gaze during the incident in the 1-0 win over Italy, but was caught on camera and handed a four-month ban, which has now expired.

“I felt disappointed in myself, for my wife, my children, and particularly for all the Uruguayan people, and when something like that happens, the most important thing is to accept what you’ve done wrong and to apologise,” Suarez told The Guardian.

“When you feel you’ve done something wrong, you should apologise for it.”

This was not the initial attitude coming from the Uruguay camp or even the Government, who staunchly defended Suarez and he even claimed that he had ‘fallen’ on to Chiellini’s shoulder accidentally.

The fact this was the third time in his career that Suarez had been caught biting an opponent during a match made FIFA come down hard with a huge ban.

Now Suarez has taken the time to reflect on why he made the same bizarre mistake three times.

“Everyone has different ways of defending themselves. In my case, the pressure and tension came out in that way. There are other players who react by breaking someone’s leg, or smashing someone’s nose across their face.

“What happened with Chiellini is seen as worse. I understand why biting is seen so badly. It is like an impulse, like a reaction. Almost as if you realise straight away…

“I think all the bad things I have been through are in the past. I believe I am on the right path now, dealing with the people who can help me, the right kind of people.”

Why Giorgio Chiellini Is Juventus' Most
Disappointing Player so Far in 2014/15

Jan 13, 2015

While currently enjoying an enviable position as the only remaining Italian representative in the Champions League, the 2014-15 season has been far from perfect for Juventus. Indeed, even given their three-point lead over AS Roma at the top of the Serie A table, there is still much room for improvement for the Bianconeri.

Massimiliano Allegri deserves huge credit for his continuation of Antonio Conte’s success, but there remains much work for the coach if he is to win over a fanbase which remains largely skeptical of his tenure. The same can be said of Beppe Marotta, the director general who brought the likes of Carlos Tevez and Paul Pogba to the club, but is still viewed as aimless in his transfer market dealings by many.

Even on the field, a number of players have failed to live up to their previous high standards, with perhaps Fernando Llorente as the most obvious example. The Spanish striker has netted just four times this term, with two of those coming in November’s rout of Parma, although he is far from the only underperformer.

Arturo Vidal is seemingly over his own spell of poor form—discussed in detail here—but Andrea Pirlo still appears off-the-pace in a number of games, yet Giorgio Chiellini has been even more culpable. There is no escaping the fact that the Pisa-born defender may be the biggest disappointment of the season thus far.

At first glance, the Juventus defence appears in fine shape, conceding just nine goals in the first 18 league games and keeping an impressive 10 clean sheets. Add a further three shutouts in the Champions League and—given that Chiellini is the linchpin of that back line—any criticism may at first appear unfounded.

However those figures are skewed by the team’s bright start to the campaign. The club’s recent penchant for conceding has become concerning, with the play of Chiellini central to those worries.

Indeed, it was he who was charged with marking Britos ahead of Dries Mertens’ corner that brought an equaliser for the Partenopei, a task he failed summarily to adhere to. The previous outing had also seen Chiellini inexplicably caught up-field following a substitution, his absence providing all the room Mauro Icardi needed to capitalise for Inter.

His lack of attention to his man-marking duties was also to blame during Juve’s eventual Super Cup loss to Napoli, with Gonzalo Higuain scoring twice, with the first almost entirely due to Chiellini’s poor positioning. Having established himself as perhaps the finest Italian defender of his generation, it is an alarming slump that the 30-year-old must quickly address.

It is also one which cannot be masked by numbers, a genuine case of what is seen on the field being backed by statistics. According to WhoScored, he is averaging just 1.7 tackles per game compared to 2.5 last term, a huge drop-off in such a small period of time since Italy’s embarrassing World Cup exit.

He has also picked up four yellow cards already in 2014-15, just one short of last season’s tally and many have been as a result of clumsy challenges and poor timing. Further evidence comes from Squawka.com, figures there showing the former Fiorentina stopper has made a staggering 88 fouls in just 15 league appearances to date.

While the absence of Andrea Barzagli—plus Martin Caceres’ own lengthy layoff—have been highlighted as issues, the displays of Chiellini remain a far more pertinent problem. He has proven that at his best, few strikers can expect to enjoy success as his direct opponent, and he has been every inch as good as his reputation suggests.

Almost a year ago he became one of only 38 players to make 300 appearances for the Bianconeri, a wonderful achievement that was rightly honoured by the club. His displays over the past decade have seen Giorgio Chiellini become one of the most feared and accomplished defenders on the planet, and that is the player Juventus so sorely need him to be today.

Chiellini: I supported Milan but
I want to end career at Juventus

The Italy international wants to finish his playing career with the Bianconeri,
despite confirming he was a fan of AC Milan when he was younger.

Feb 28, 2015

Giorgio Chiellini has revealed that he wants to finish his career at Juventus, even though he supported AC Milan as a child.

The 30-year-old has been a mainstay in the Bianconeri defence since joining the club in 2005 and recently signed a new deal that will keep him in Turin until the end of the 2017-18 Serie A season.

Despite confirming that he was a fan of the Rossoneri during his youth, the centre-back stated that he could not see himself hanging up his boots while at any club but Juve.

"I was a Milan fan when I was a child, but you improve as you grow older. I hope to end my career at Juventus, especially as I’m starting to get a bit old," Chiellini told Rai.

The Italy international also commented on the club's tradition of closely monitoring their players both on and off the field, but suggested that the surveillance does not mean the players are dull.

"Our style remains the same, it’s just times have changed. You can’t ask Vidal or Pogba to cut their mohicans off, but what really matters is the attitude and in a club like ours that is monitored. However, at Juventus we are not as square as people think."

Juve currently sit nine points clear of Roma and travel to Rome to face their rivals on Monday evening.

Chiellini: Juventus’ Scudetti Were Ours, Not Just Conte’s

Mar 2, 2015

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini spoke ahead of Monday evening’s Serie A clash against Roma, stating that they are out to prove their worth as players.

Juventus, despite the coaching change from Antonio Conte to Massimiliano Allegri, have maintained their grip on Serie A and remained top throughout the season.

In a long interview on Monday morning, Chiellini spoke about their determination to beat Roma and move closer to a fourth successive Scudetto, in order to prove that Juventus’ past successes were also the players’ and not just former coach Conte’s.

“Despite the shock of Conte’s departure, with Allegri, we have managed to remain top of the league,” Chiellini said to Corriere della Sera.

“The change in coach has given us the edge and anger to want to prove ourselves.

“We are grateful to Conte and his staff, but we want to clarify [this year] that our titles were not just about the coach.

“In the second and third years with Conte we needed a slap; at the start of this season we got that slap [with Allegri].”
