Magpies' captain to have opening ceremony honour in Juventus

NOTTS County captain Neal Bishop will have the honour of representing the Magpies in the key moment of the ceremony to open Juventus' new stadium.

Bishop will present the Italian giant's legendary player Alessandro Del Piero with a black-and-white shirt before the two teams play a special exhibition match.

It is meant as a symbolic gesture because Juventus wore Notts shirts when they first began wearing black-and-white stripes over a century ago, in 1903.

Bishop is proud to be asked to make the presentation to Del Piero, a World Cup winner.

"It's a fantastic honour," he said.

"I was playing football with my mates on Sunday mornings four or five years ago, so it's ridiculous to think I will be on the same pitch as players like Del Piero.

"I have only been a professional footballer for a few years and I'm really thankful my career has brought me to Notts.

"It's been such an exciting time for the club since I've been here and now we're playing against Juventus. It's surreal."

The Magpies fly out to Turin tomorrow and Bishop added: "We can all look forward to it now after beating Bournemouth and giving one our most accomplished performances since the gaffer (Martin Allen) took charge. It will make it all the more enjoyable.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us as a set of players.

"With the history of the club it's a massive honour to go over there and represent us.

"They could have asked Barcelona, Manchester United or Real Madrid and I'm sure they would have all been happy to go out there and play so for them to ask us is a bit surreal.

"They are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can reel off the world-class players that have played for them, from Zidane, Nedved and Del Piero. I used to watch all of those players on television on a Sunday afternoon.

"Everyone in the world knows a team like Juventus and what they stand for. It's a massive, massive honour for us to be invited over there.

"We have all been on the internet to look at the stadium and it looks fantastic.

"I hope it is a sell-out. We want to go over there and play in front of a big crowd."
