Is Juventus title worthy?

Is this just a better than expected start or is there going to be a new trophy in the Juventus Museum cabinets.

Juventus 2023-24 Roster Power Rankings - Black & White & Read All Over

Can this Juventus challenge for a title?

This is the biggest question being asked by Juventus faithful everywhere right now.

On paper, the answer has to be yes. While they don’t have the lead at the top of the table heading into the international break, Juve’s just two points off the top with the same number of defeats as title favorites and current league leaders Inter Milan. They’ve notched wins over AC MilanFiorentina and Lazio, boast one of the stoutest defenses in Serie A and they are the only team in the mix to not have any European games this season. ............

While I don’t subscribe to the theory that Juventus simply cannot win playing defensive football, I’d be lying if I said I don’t think their lackluster offensive numbers are not a reason for concern. Juventus has scored only 19 goals this season, good for seventh overall and far from what you would expect from a team with title ambitions. ............

While the trio of Daniele Rugani, Federico Gatti and Bremer have been marvelous at stopping the opposing side, they don’t offer much in terms of distribution from the back. And while Manuel Locatelli continues to improve as a defensive center midfielder, he’s still not quite the guy that is going to singlehandedly dictate the tempo and make the necessary passes to start dangerous counter attacks. ............

Adrien Rabiot — excuse me, Captain Rabiot — is good with the ball at his feet and can produce sustained runs with some pace and Weston McKennie has found his second act as he’s shining in the system and making his very best impression of the Energizer bunny with his recent performances. But, again, without consistent outlet passes, those runs are more often than not done chasing the stray football or going back into the defensive phase.

Other than McKennie, Moise Kean is the other player who has shone the brightest in Max Allegri’s system. His speed and verticality have been on display and despite still — somehow — not scoring a goal yet this season, his double move to provoke a red card in the AC Milan game probably won them that match. ............

Considering the objective for this team was a comfortable top four finish, the lesson from this first third of the season is that they will most likely achieve that. Whether or not they can actually challenge for silverware will depend on their ability to continue doing what they are doing well and making this system all around more sustainable.

The first big proof of concept of Juventus as a side with title winning potential is scheduled for the 26th of November. Should be a good one.

Juventus could have just three healthy midfielders for the Derby d’Italia

Things are not great.

Adrien Rabiot of Juventus Fc looks on during the Serie A...

Even when Juventus’ midfield is at full strength these days, it’s not actually at full strength. That’s because, as we know, two of their most talented midfielders aren’t going to see the field of play for the next few months (and maybe even longer than that), thus leaving the squad shorthanded even when those capable of being available are jus that.

Depth has been an issue ever since Paul Pogba became a non-factor this season (and then go popped for a failed doping test) and Nicolo Fagioli’s gambling addiction became public. ............

They may not involve players getting suspended (thankfully), but a numbers crunch in midfield has moved into crisis mode over the course of the work week. First, we heard that Manuel Locatelli suffered a broken rib in last weekend’s win over Cagliari and was forced to leave the Italian national team’s camp ahead of a pair of Euro 2024 qualifiers. Before the week was over, it was Fabio Miretti’s turn to return from international duty early, leaving the Italian Under-21 team’s camp with a reported back injury.

Add that up and you’ve got a situation developing where only three midfielders are likely to be healthy enough to play against Inter next Sunday night: Adrien Rabiot, Weston McKennie and Hans Nicolussi Cavliglia, who could get his first-ever senior team start simply out of necessity. ............

No matter what, though, Allegri will be heading into the first Derby d’Italia of the 2023-24 season without at least half of his regular midfield options. That’s very much something that is far from ideal, and something considering Inter’s strength in the midfield that could truly turn things into the league leaders’ favor next Sunday night in Turin.

Journalist urges Allegri to get the best from his players in specific position

Juventus are not to be messed with – hell hath no fury like an Old Lady scorned - The Athletic

Juventus will face Inter Milan with an attacking lineup that has struggled to find the back of the net recently. Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic, who made a strong start to the season as the club’s top scorers, have seen their goal-scoring form decline in recent weeks. ............

Inter Milan boasts some of Serie A’s finest attackers, and it is expected that they will pose a significant threat in the upcoming match.

Journalist Giovanni Guardalà, who has closely observed both clubs in preparation for the Derby d’Italia, suggests that Inter Milan possesses the superior attack.

He said:

“Inter with Lautaro Martinez and Thuram scored twice as many goals as Chiesa and Vlahovic. Allegri needs to find his best attackers as soon as possible. Perhaps it doesn’t take much to rekindle them . A goal on the most important night of November 26th.” ............

Vieri insists Juventus does not have to play like Inter Milan to win

Serie A 2023-2024 Archives - Page 7 of 78 - The Cult of Calcio

Former Inter Milan and Juventus striker Christian Vieri insists that Max Allegri prioritises results over style of play, and that’s acceptable because there are various ways to achieve success as a club.

Juventus doesn’t adopt the most attractive style of football under Max Allegri, as the Bianconeri manager tends to favour a more defensive approach to matches.

This differs from the approaches of teams like Inter Milan and Atalanta, which seem to incorporate more flair into their game. ............

After the international break, Juventus and Inter will face each other in the first Derby d’Italia of the season, showcasing a clash between defence and attack. ............

Ahead of the game, Vieri said:

“These are the numbers, but the points earned are also numbers.

“Surely, European clubs rely on a different style, like Inter. You always play to win, attack and create goal-scoring opportunities.

“Like it or not, Allegri likes results over clear-cut chances, but they still have four strong strikers and perhaps, they’ll buy more. If Juventus buy somebody, it will be a strong player to win titles.” ............

Juventus vs Inter: Serie A Preview, Potential Lineups & Prediction

Juventus_Inter_Preview.jpg

One of the most iconic fixtures on the Serie A calendar plays out on Sunday as Juventus and Inter lock horns in the 185th edition of the famous Derby d’Italia. A mouth-watering showdown at the Allianz Stadium has all the makings of a top-table six-pointer, with only two points separating the arch-rivals ahead of the kick-off.

Three years of pain and suffering could finally pay off this season as Juventus seem hellbent on wrestling back domestic dominance. Without the distraction of European football for the first time in more than a decade, Massimiliano Allegri’s men have gone from strength to strength at the start of the new league campaign. ............

Match Preview

Juventus

Despite an abysmal 2022/23 campaign, Juventus dispatched Inter in both league encounters last term without conceding. A 2-0 win in this corresponding fixture was their fourth in five Serie A meetings in Turin since 2018, three of which came ‘to nil.’ That puts an emphasis on defensive solidity that has been the backbone of Bianconeri’s success this season.

In addition to only conceding seven times in Serie A in 2022/23, Juventus have pulled off six clean sheets in their last seven league outings. Allegri’s conservative approach has paid dividends, yet it doesn’t come free of charge. Defensive-minded philosophy has taken its toll in the front third, with the record-time Italian champions averaging just 1.58 goals per league game.

Inter

Inter avenged last season’s league fiasco against Juventus with a crucial 2-1 aggregate win in the Coppa Italia semi-finals en route to conquering the competition for the second campaign running. However, the Allianz Stadium hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Nerazzurri over the past decade. They’ve only won once in their last 14 competitive games against their eternal rivals at this venue.

Unlike his Juventus counterpart, Inzaghi has found a perfect balance between defense and attack. Not only are Inter the division’s most prolific side with 29 goals, but they’ve also conceded a league-low six. And it gets better on the road, where they’ve won all five Serie A matches via a combined score of 12-1, most recently overcoming Atalanta 2-1 in Bergamo.

Player to Watch: Federico Chiesa

Chiesa has four Serie A goals under his belt this season, but you’d need to go back to late September for the last time he rattled the net. But he might have rebuilt his confidence with a match-winning display in Italy’s 5-2 demolition of North Macedonia.

Player to Watch: Lautaro Martinez

Inter need a man for the big occasion, and the leading Serie A goalscorer fits the bill. With 12 goals, Martinez leads the scoring charts in Italy. He also boasts five goal contributions against Juventus (G3, A2).

Team News

Juventus head into proceedings plagued by injuries and suspensions. Danilo, Mattia De Sciglio, and Timothy Weah are still in the infirmary, while Alex Sandro and Manuel Locatelli are close to full recovery. As for Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli, it’s uncertain when they could return to action. ............

Juventus vs Inter Potential Lineups

Juventus (3-5-2): Wojciech Szczesny; Federico Gatti, Gleison Bremer, Daniele Rugani; Filip Kostic, Adrien Rabiot, Fabio Miretti, Manuel Locatelli, Weston McKennie; Federico Chiesa, Dusan Vlahovic.

Inter (3-5-2): Yann Sommer; Matteo Darmian, Stefan de Vrij, Francesco Acerbi; Federico Dimarco, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Hakan Calhanoglu, Nicolo Barella, Denzel Dumfries; Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martinez.

Juventus vs Inter Prediction

It’s more than just bragging rights at stake here. A win would fire Juventus to the top of the tree, while Inter could go five points clear at the summit should they defy their perennial struggles in Turin. On that basis, it’s only fair to assume a keenly-contested, low-scoring encounter is in store.

Prediction: Draw

Gigi Delneri explains why Juventus is behind Inter and recommends a signing

de-Paul1.jpeg

Former Juventus manager Gigi Delneri has insisted the Bianconeri are behind Inter Milan for several reasons as both clubs prepare to meet in Serie A this weekend.

Juve and Inter are the best two clubs in the Italian top flight and have been the most in-form sides in the league this term. ............

Delneri does not think so and said:

“What is Juve missing to be at Inter’s level? The Nerazzurri have two strong players in each position, Juve lacks replacements. We need a shot in midfield like De Paul. Rodrigo is a very serious boy and perfect for the 3-5-2. He was born as an attacking midfielder. He also played as a winger with me, but then he adapted very well as a right midfielder in Udine.” ............

Locatelli offers Juventus hope of featuring against Inter Milan

Locatelli-v-AC-Milan.jpg

Juventus has received a boost on the fitness front as Manuel Locatelli has progressed in his recovery from an injury ahead of their game against Inter Milan. ............

This development is a significant boost for the Bianconeri, who have been keen to ensure his fitness.

While it remains unclear whether he will be passed fit for the match, it is certainly encouraging news that he participated in training partially. ............

Luigi De Agostini will not be surprised by a Juventus win in the Derby d’Italia

De Agostini: «Bremer è l'ideale dopo De Ligt. E aspetto Chiesa» - ESCLUSIVA

Former Juventus and Inter Milan player Luigi De Agostini has shared his thoughts on the upcoming Derby d’Italia between the two clubs this weekend.

In what promises to be one of the toughest matches for both sides, Juventus faces its biggest rival in Italian football. Despite not being as well-equipped as the Nerazzurri, Juventus has defied expectations, and under Max Allegri’s guidance, they are currently in a neck-and-neck race for the title with Inter. ............

Heading into the Derby d’Italia, Juventus is in good form, and Inter recognises that they are facing one of the strongest Juventus sides in recent terms. While some may believe Inter will secure an easy win against Max Allegri’s team, De Agostini insists on supporting the Old Lady over Inter.

He said:

“Juve or Inter? In this case I can only support Juve, of course. I spent five years here , the most important of my caree. At Inter, it was only a one-year parenthesis, the place had never really forgiven me and Schillaci our journey in black and white.”

Adding: “What match do I expect? A very tight, hard-fought match . Inter actually have something more, but I think Juve have all they need to compete, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see a Juventus victory.” ............

Simone Inzaghi insists he expected Juventus to be this competitive

Simone-Inzaghi1.jpg

Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi insists that he expected Juventus to be this competitive, as the Bianconeri closely trail his team in the league table.

As Juventus and Inter prepare to face each other in the first Derby d’Italia of the season, it is anticipated to be a closely contested match between two of the top clubs in Italian football.

The performance of Juventus in the league has somewhat surpassed expectations, and they have the opportunity to be at the top of the league standings after the upcoming game. ............

Asked if he expected Juve’s season to be this good, he said:

“Absolutely yes, Juventus clearly have a coach like Allegri and they are an excellent team. They always want to win, like Inter after all: they have huge ambitions and this year they have more time to prepare for the matches, we all know that he is a huge advantage. We don’t hide, we assume our responsibilities and it is a stimulus to improve ourselves every day. There are moments in which they say that the team to beat is Inter and others in which they say that we have weakened, but it depends always with results.” ............

Max Allegri insists Juventus is playing against Serie A’s favourites this weekend

Massimiliano Allegri, battaglia legale con l'ex: «Ha speso per sé i soldi destinati a nostro figlio» | Vanity Fair Italia

Juventus manager Max Allegri is adamant that Inter Milan are the favourites to win Serie A this season as his team prepares to face the Milanese.

While Juventus is perceived as having an inferior squad compared to Inter this season, they have managed to stay close to their rivals in the league standings. Juventus has capitalised on not playing in European competitions, securing victories in as many league games as possible, allowing them to remain in close contention with Inter at the top of the table. ............

Despite some pundits suggesting that Juventus has an equal chance to win the upcoming Derby d’Italia, Allegri is steadfast in his belief that his team is facing the favourites in the match.

He said:

“Tomorrow is a very important match for us, because it is part of the team’s growth journey. Tomorrow is a good match to play against the championship favourites. Coming from themselves.” ............

Juventus vs Inter Milan Preview: Probable Lineups, Prediction, Tactics, Team News & Key Stats

Juventus vs Inter - Serie A: TV channel, team news, lineups & prediction | OneFootball

Inter Milan vs. Juventus. The Derby d’Italia. First against second. It is always a big game, but this time it is even bigger. After the two-week international break hiatus, Serie A comes up with a very special marquee Sunday night fixture between the early front-runners for the Scudetto.

It is an opportunity for Simone Inzaghi’s Inter to put their stamp on the title race against Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus, who are just two points behind the Nerazzurri going into the weekend. ............

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

A handful of Juventus players are in a race against the clock to be cleared fit to face Inter Milan. Alex Sandro, Weston McKennie, and Fabio Miretti all trained with the team, suggesting they have shaken off their respective knocks and should be ready for the Inter game.

On the flip side, playmaker Manuel Locatelli is dealing with a rib problem that ruled him out of Italy’s Euro 2024 qualifiers and will probably miss the upcoming game, which could hand Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri an additional dilemma in the engine room this weekend as both Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli are suspended for the foreseeable future. ............

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Rugani; Cambiaso, McKennie, Miretti, Rabiot, Kostic; Chiesa, Kean

MmhgXaMSuMjxZUD8A3Uq.png

Inter Milan

Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi will be without the services of his starting centre-back pair, as both Benjamin Pavard (knee) and Alessandro Bastoni (calf) have been ruled out of Sunday’s derby clash. ............

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Sommer; Darmian, De Vrij, Acerbi; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Martinez

Inter Milan XI vs Juventus

Key Stats

  • Juventus are buoyed by a seven-game unbeaten run, keeping six clean sheets and recording five consecutive wins.
  • Juventus have won their last five matches in front of their fans, keeping three clean sheets in that run.
  • Inter are the best offensive team in Serie A, with 29 goals in 12 games.
  • Seven of the last eight meetings between these two Italian giants have featured two or fewer goals.

Player to Watch

Federico Chiesa

image.jpeg.85aac211eb3a6b83a5bbc13c7b38c3f5.jpeg

............

Prediction

Juventus 1-0 Inter Milan

Separated by just two points at the top of the table, Juventus and Inter Milan appear evenly matched at the moment and could be set to cancel each other out. Despite the obvious attacking quality on show, it is set to be a low-scoring clash.

Not only are the stakes high, but defensively, these two have been the strongest so far in Italy by miles, with Inter Milan conceding only six times in 12 games and Massimiliano Allegri’s rock-solid Juventus breaching only seven times over the same stretch.

In fact, keeping this title tussle low-scoring and fiery would be the Bianconeri’s best chance of coming out on top. With that in mind, the Hard Tackle predicts Massimiliano Allegri’s troops will grind out a 1-0 victory.

Preview: Juventus vs Napoli – Team News, Lineups & Prediction

Juventus_Napoli_Preview.jpg

Allianz Arena sets the stage for a blockbuster Serie A showdown between title-bidding Juventus and defending champions Napoli. Friday’s top-four six-pointer in Turin could shape the home side’s Scudetto quest but also prove a turning point for the out-of-sorts title holders.  ............

Since almost every side broke its teeth at their home fortress this season, Juventus fans have every reason to look forward to this encounter. Before an evenly-contested 1-1 Derby d’Italia draw against Inter, Bianconeri had won five consecutive home league outings by a combined score of 9-2. It gives them a legitimate reason to hope for the best.

Napoli’s state of mind is quite the opposite following a dreadful 3-0 home defeat to Inter last weekend. Walter Mazzarri’s return to the helm has failed to produce the desired effect. After marking his touchline debut with a gutsy 2-1 win at Atalanta, the veteran manager has overseen back-to-back defeats. ............

Match Preview

Juventus

Defensively sound, Juventus have only conceded nine times in the opening 14 Serie A rounds. But after failing to keep a clean sheet in their last two league matches, Bianconeri can’t take anything for granted. With that said, Allegri’s men have only capitulated four times in their six top-flight games on home turf.

That steady backline has played a pivotal role in an unbeaten league record in Turin (W5, D2). However, Napoli’s upcoming visit will test their defensive resolve, especially considering Juventus have gone winless in their last two Serie A meetings at home (D1, L1). That puts them on the brink of an unwanted feat.

You’d need to go back to 1995-1998 for the last time Juventus failed to win three consecutive home league clashes against Napoli. ............

Team News

In addition to Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba, who remain suspended for breaching betting rules and failing a drug test, Juventus will be without Mattia De Sciglio and Timothy Weah. But Alex Sandro and Danilo are back in the fold, though both should start on the bench.

As for Napoli, Mathias Olivera and Mario Rui are on the sidelines injured, leaving Juan Jesus as the only remaining left-back option. Mazzarri is more concerned about Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s fitness status, with the Partenopei captain dealing with a muscle problem.

Juventus vs Napoli Potential Lineups

Juventus (3-5-2): Wojciech Szczesny; Federico Gatti, Gleison Bremer, Daniele Rugani; Andrea Cambiaso, Weston McKennie, Nicolussi Caviglia, Adrien Rabiot, Filip Kostic; Federico Chiesa, Dusan Vlahovic.

Napoli (3-4-3): Alex Meret; Amir Rrahmani, Leo Ostigard, Natan; Matteo Politano, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Stanislav Lobotka, Piotr Zielinski; Giacomo Raspadori, Victor Osimhen, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Juventus vs Napoli Prediction

Given the high stakes, this contest has all the makings of a tepid, low-scoring affair. Against this backdrop, three of the last five league encounters between Juventus and Napoli have seen over 2.5 goals and both teams scoring, highlighting the potential for an action-packed duel.

But we’re more inclined to believe in a share of the spoils, though we can’t exclude the possibility of both teams troubling the scoreboard.

Prediction: Draw

Federico Gatti's header sinks Napoli and sends Juventus back to Serie A summit

Federico Gatti sends Juventus top of Serie A with win over Napoli | beIN SPORTS

Juventus have returned to the Serie A summit after Federico Gatti's second-half header saw them beat Napoli 1-0 in Turin.

The result marks a fifth 1-0 win in seven games for Massimiliano Allegri's side, who now move above Inter Milan for the time being, before the Nerazzurri face Udinese tomorrow.

Gatti was the matchwinner last weekend, and repeated the trick here, albeit, in slightly less dramatic circumstances following his 94th-minute strike at Monza.

Napoli had the best of the first-half action, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia guilty of missing a gilt-edged opportunity, before Juventus started the second period strongly and found the all-important goal and held on in classic Allegri style.  ............

The host's only real clear chance of the first half fell to Dusan Vlahovic, but the Serb struggled to get proper control of the ball, allowing Natan to get in the way of his eventual effort on goal, before Weston McKennie fired over from an overhead kick on the rebound.

Napoli were then guilty of two huge misses, firstly from Kvaratskhelia just before the half-hour mark, as the entire Juve defence were dragged over towards Victor Osimhen, and the striker held the ball up expertly before finding the Georgian, but through one-on-one, he inexplicably fired over the top.

More suspect defending from the Bianconeri gifted Napoli another opening, as skipper Di Lorenzo found himself with the goal at his mercy after Bremer's clearance cannoned back off Gatti, but Szczesny was on hand to make a fantastic stop.

After surviving some major scares in the opening 45 minutes, Juventus took advantage early in the second half by taking supremacy of the game themselves, starting with Vlahovic striking the post, and even though McKennie was flagged off in the build-up, replays suggested it was incredibly tight.

However, within two minutes Allegri's side found their goal, and it was once again from an unlikely source, and the same source as last week's winner, as Gatti rose highest above Di Lorenzo and Amir Rrahmani to head home Cambiaso's cross for his third of the season.

With Allegri often the master of grinding out 1-0 wins, Juventus almost instantly dropped significantly deeper to protect their lead, despite there still being the majority of the second half still to play. ............

However, the home crowd were given an almighty scare on 70 minutes, when Szczesny's casual pass out was intercepted by Politano, who found Osimhen, and with the goalkeeper in no man's land, the Nigerian rounded him and slotted into the empty net, only to see the linesman's flag deny him. ............

The result leaves Juve a point clear of Inter having played a game more, but they will play first again next weekend too, when they travel to Genoa on Friday. ............

Top-scoring Federico Gatti sends Juventus back to the top of Serie A

gatti-v-napoli.jpg

Federico Gatti was Juventus’ hero as the Bianconeri defeated Napoli tonight, returning to the top of Serie A.

Some people claim that Juve is too afraid to play attacking football and to attack their opponents, but that wasn’t the case in this game.

From the beginning, the Bianconeri threatened Walter Mazzarri’s side, and the game was very open. ............

The Bianconeri continued to threaten Napoli at the start of the second half and got their reward when Gatti scored six minutes after the break, thanks to a fine assist from Andrea Cambiaso. He is now the top-scoring defender in Serie A.

Juve is one of the hardest teams to break down, and once they had their noses in front, Napoli knew it would be hard to score.

That was the case as the Bianconeri defended well and ensured Napoli found little joy from attacking them.

Max Allegri’s men did not have much appetite to attack during the second half and were content to allow Napoli to have most of the ball, but the Partenopei could not find a goal. ............

Juve earns another narrow victory and continues to march toward winning the title.

Juventus Player Ratings vs Napoli: New Chapter in Gatti Fairytale

3840579-78044508-2560-1440.jpg

Juventus (3-5-2)

Wojciech Szczesny – 7

Although he only had a single big save to make, the Pole’s stop against Giovanni Di Lorenzo will probably go down as the save of the week. Almost gifted Victor Osimhen the equalizer with a poor throw, but was spared the blushes by the offside flag.

Federico Gatti – 8

The former Serie D player enjoyed yet another magical night at the Allianz as he pulled off the winner with a towering header. He also managed to keep Khvicha Kvaratskhelia at bay in what was a sensational performance.

Gleison Bremer – 6.5

The Brazilian was guilty of abandoning his teammates at the back and surging forward which ultimately gave Kvara a golden chance to equalize. But aside from that blemish, it was a great display against Osimhen in particular.

Danilo – 7

The Juventus captain was always there to support Bremer in his feud against Osimhen all while winning his own duel against Matteo Politano with ease.

Andrea Cambiaso – 7

A courageous display from the former Genoa man who wasn’t afraid of taking on his marker on the wing or getting involved in a skirmish against Kvaratskhelia. Provided the assist for Gatti with a wonderful cross.

Weston McKennie – 6.5

............

Manuel Locatelli – 6.5

............

Adrien Rabiot – 6.5

............

Filip Kostic – 6.5

............

Dusan Vlahovic – 6

The Serbian should have taken his shot quicker before allowing Natan to block him from close range. Almost scored in the second half but his first-time shot was denied by the post. But a decent outing overall before it ended with a knock.

Federico Chiesa – 6.5

An energetic display from the former Fiorentina man who teed up Vlahovic with a glorious pass. He was a thorn in Napoli’s side with his terrifying runs.

Substitutes

Arkadiusz Milik – 6

............

Moise Kean – N/A

Alex Sandro – N/A

Daniele Rugani – N/A

Samuel Iling-Junior – N/A

Juventus 1 - Napoli 0: Initial reaction and random observations

Juventus wins another by Max Allegri’s favorite scoreline even though it’s actually a little surprising that it ended that way.

FBL-ITA-SERIEA-JUVENTUS-NAPOLI

So much of the first two years of Max Allegri’s comeback to Juventus was marked by how ineffective his team was in the bigger games domestically and in Europe. Dropped points here, dropped points there, and nothing but frustration upon frustration stacked up like overdue library books that hadn’t been returned yet. ............

That latest came Friday night at the Allianz Stadium. And say what you wanna say about the current state of Serie A’s reigning champions, Napoli still pose a threat for any team that they’re matching up against. Those threats gave out a few scares, but it was Juventus that proved to be the only team to find the back of the net, with Federico Gatti scoring his second game-winning goal in as many games to give the Bianconeri the 1-0 win in Turin, their first victory over Napoli since the spring of 2021.

Gatti’s header, off a near-perfect cross from Andrea Cambiaso, and some very good defending in the second half meant that Juventus got back to where they were this time a week ago — atop the Serie A standings and eagerly awaiting to see what Inter does during the weekend. ............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • I still have no idea what, exactly, Kvaratskhelia was trying to do on that breakaway chance that he absolutely skied into the curva. I’m not the only one.
  • I am still thinking about Cambiaso’s cross. That thing was a thing of beauty. I said it before and I say it again, even though he’s playing out wide on the right in a position in which he’s not totally used to, he’s just continuing to do things to help Juve win rather than being a total detriment to the squad. That’s the kind of consistency Juve need.
  • Wojciech Szczesny made one save in the first half. It was maybe one of the best saves he’s made in the last couple of years. Holy smokes.
  • And because there was an offside ruling on Giovanni Di Lorenzo, it won’t even technically count as a save. It’s still a save in my personal record book, Tek. I will always remember it.
  • Bremer had six clearances and three tackles against Napoli. Considering how things went in Naples a little less than a year ago, I’ll take that every single time.
  • Federico Chiesa had three key passes and it could have been a lot more. The dude hasn’t scored a goal in a decent amount of time, but he’s making things happen. And he’s just so damn fun to watch in the open field when he’s either putting his head down on the counter or trying to crush the soul of the defender in front of him.
  • There’s now 12 points between Juventus and fifth place. The goal of this season was to finish in fourth place. No matter what you think of Juve’s title chances, having a nice cushion between the Champions League and not being in the Champions League next season is pretty nice. Now, to continue this busy December and only try to add to that.

Allegri: Juventus DNA is about getting results through hard work and effort

Coach’s comments after Juve pull off another close win

Juventus v Napoli - Serie A

Juventus rolled to yet another single-goal victory, this time against Napoli, to hop to the top of the Serie A league table once again. The Bianconeri have been doing well keeping pressure on Inter Milan with a series of wins, and until the Nerazzurri beat Udinese on Saturday Juve will stay top.

Speaking after the game, coach Massimiliano Allegri was pleased with the result.

“Winning this evening was very important, because we put Napoli at 12 points behind and that is a great result.

“As for dreams and the Scudetto, we need to keep improving step by step, especially when we make too many mistakes. We did well in the first half, moving the ball side to side, then in difficult moments the team becomes a block of granite.

“Napoli had a lot of the ball yes, but not huge opportunities and we had the right spirit.” ............

“I have a group of lads who work hard. What we need to do is slow things down, not always try to make it one-touch football. We should control the ball better in some moments of the match.”  ............

“We can even say in the locker room that we have the ambition to win the Scudetto, but you need to get results. There’s no point talking about what might be, we need to focus on what is. The more we play like this, the more we get these results, the more we keep clear of fifth place and the more we keep up with the leaders who at this moment are the strongest team in the league. ............

Defender Federico Gatti epitomizes the model of Juventus that Allegri preaches.

“Juventus, let us not disguise it, have in their DNA for 120 years that you get results through hard work and effort.”

Rubinho warns Juventus about Genoa ahead of today’s match

Rubinho.jpg

Former Juventus goalkeeper Rubinho has issued a warning to the Bianconeri ahead of their Serie A clash with Genoa tonight. ............

While Genoa’s recent form might not suggest they can pose significant problems for Juventus, the Bianconeri will need to avoid complacency when facing them. Rubinho’s warning emphasises the need for Juventus to approach the match with caution and not underestimate their opponents.

He said:

“Genoa-Juventus? I expect a tough match. Genoa play well and give their best at home, plus they want to make up for the undeserved defeat in Monza. Juve will have to be on their guard to get a result and continue to put pressure on Inter.” ............

Three Genoa players who Juventus must look out for on Round 16

Gudmundsson.jpg

For the third Friday in a row, Juventus feature in the curtain-raiser of the Serie A weekend. After overcoming Monza and Napoli through Federico Gatti’s winners, the Bianconeri will be looking to collect another three points when hosted by Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

Despite their recent shaky results, the Grifone remain a tough nut to crack, especially when playing on their home turf in front of their raucous supporters. ...........

So let’s take a closer look at three Genoa players that Max Allegri and Juventus must keep an eye on this evening.

Radu Dragusin (Defender)

The Bianconeri are already all-too-familiar with Radu Dragusin who developed in the club’s youth ranks and Next Gen squad in recent years.

The Romanian was one of the club’s most promising youngsters, but Juventus decided to part ways with him following an underwhelming campaign on loan between Sampdoria and Salernitana. ...........

Dragusin will be looking to make a point against his former employers, while his defensive partner Koni De Winter is also in the same boat.

Ruslan Malinovskyi (Midfielder)

During his time at Atalanta, Ruslan Malinovskyi was considered among the best attacking midfielders in the league. ...........

Still, he remains incredibly dangerous when afforded enough spaces between the lines, especially on the edge of the box, as evidenced by his two sublime strikes in recent weeks.

Albert Gudmundsson (Striker)

Since the start of the season, Albert Gudmundsson has cemented himself as one of the main revelations of the Serie A campaign.

The Icelandic netted five goals from 13 appearances while proving to be an absolute thorn in the back of his markers with his breath-taking dribbling skills. ............

Genoa vs Juventus Preview

LIVE MBN, Genoa 2-1 Juventus: succede di tutto all'ultimo. Criscito regala i tre punti salvezza al Grifone – MondoBiancoNero.com

Juventus will look to return to the summit of Serie A when they take on Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium on Friday.

Club football resumes this week, and the 2023/24 Serie A season will continue with Matchday 16 on Friday. The latest round of fixtures will kick off at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium, where Genoa will host Juventus, with both teams in good nick in different contexts. ...........

Team News & Tactics

Genoa

Alberto Gilardino does not have many issues to deal with ahead of his side’s latest fixture. Against Juventus on Friday, the Genoa manager will be bereft of the services of only one first-team player.

Kevin Strootman is the only player in the treatment room, with the Dutch midfielder recovering from a hamstring injury. Josep Martinez will take his spot between the sticks, with Genoa lining up in a 3-5-2 formation in front of him.  ...........

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Martinez; De Winter, Dragusin, Vasquez; Sabelli, Malinovskyi, Badelj, Frendrup, Haps; Retegui, Gudmundsson

Juventus

Unlike his counterpart in the Genoa dugout, Massimiliano Allegri has a few pressing concerns hampering his preparations ahead of the trip to the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. The Juventus boss will be without four first-team players on Friday.

Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba are serving their respective suspensions and will not be available for the foreseeable future. In addition, Mattia De Sciglio (knee) and Moise Kean (leg) are on the sidelines, with the duo recovering from their injuries.  ...........

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Vlahovic, Chiesa

R28kGuCKOJYWL3yOT8Ma.png

Key Stats

  • After a run of five defeats in a row against Juventus in Serie A, Genoa beat the Bianconeri in the most recent league fixture featuring the two teams. Il Grifone can win two in a row against Juventus for the first time since 1991.
  • None of Genoa’s last ten home games against Juventus has ended in a draw (W4 L6). The most recent stalemate came in March 2012.
  • Genoa are unbeaten in five of their last six home games in Serie A (W3 D2), raking in seven points in their most recent three outings at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.
  • Juventus have picked up 36 points in 15 games thus far this season. A win on Friday will help the Bianconeri rack up more points than they did in the first half of the 2022/23 campaign.
  • Juventus have kept a clean sheet in seven of their last ten matches on the road.

Player to Watch

Dusan Vlahovic

Vlahovic ready but Chiesa a doubt as Juventus take on Milan | Reuters

Vlahovic has not been at his best after a strong start to the 2023/24 season. The Serb seemed to have exorcised the demons from last term. But he has gone into the same shell he found himself in throughout the previous campaign. ...........

Prediction

Genoa 1-2 Juventus

There might not be much to separate Genoa and Juventus despite their respective positions on the Serie A table. The hosts have a solid record at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium and have not lost a game at home since October. So, Juventus cannot take Il Grifone lightly.

However, the visitors have a strong enough squad to scrape through by the odd goal and clinch a crucial three points. Expect Federico Chiesa to deliver the goods again, with Juventus winning 2-1 to go to the top of the Serie A table and put some pressure on Inter Milan.

Juventus denied by a stubborn performance from Genoa

Serie A football match: Genoa vs. FC Juventus-Xinhua

Juventus dropped two points at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris against Genoa this evening after struggling to break down Genoa’s stubborn defence. The Bianconeri went into the game looking for a win to take them back to the top of the Serie A table before Inter Milan plays. ...........

Juve had to wait until the 28th minute to take the lead, thanks to a penalty from Federico Chiesa, who had been fouled a minute earlier. The Bianconeri could not extend their advantage before halftime, which proved costly as Genoa returned from the break more determined than ever to earn a result.

Whatever Alberto Gilardino told his players at halftime worked, as they equalised three minutes after the interval through Albert Gudmundsson after a fine passage of play, Juve struggled to regain the lead but was confident in achieving that, considering how many late shows they have had recently. ...........

Juventus Player Ratings vs Genoa: Frustrating Bianconeri Squander Two Points

3836098-77954888-2560-1440.jpg

Juventus (3-5-2)

Wojciech Szczesny – 6

The former Arsenal goalkeeper tried to pull off a miraculous save to deny Gudmundsson but his fingertips surely weren’t enough to thwart the powerful attempt. Did well to clear his lines against Caleb Ekuban’s charge.

Federico Gatti – 5.5

After scoring back-to-back winners in the last two outings, it was a relatively underwhelming outing from the Italian defender. Left Gudmundsson unmarked on the Genoa after charing off the line.

Gleison Bremer – 6

A decent display from the Brazilian though it wasn’t his most impressive of the season. His teammates left him alone against Ekuban and Gudmundsson on the goal, so he wasn’t truly the culprit on that occasion.

Danilo – 5.5

The Juventus captain was slightly off based on his high standards. Picked up a needless yellow and lost track of Ekuban ahead of the Genoa goal. Offered very little in the attacking phase.

Andrea Cambiaso – 6.5

The former Genoa captain started brilliantly on his old turf, proving to be the most productive of Massimiliano Allegri’s bunch. However, his impact dwindled as the match progressed.

Weston McKennie – 6  ...........

Manuel Locatelli – 5.5  ...........

Fabio Miretti – 5  ...........

Filip Kostic – 5.5  ...........

Dusan Vlahovic – 5.5

The Serbian striker deserves credit for dispossessing his former Fiorentina teammate Milan Badelj and picking up Chiesa (which led to the spot kick), but this is where his positive contributions end. Squandered two inviting chances with poor touches.

Federico Chiesa – 6.5

The Euro 2020 winner did well to win the penalty kick after finding himself one-on-one against Josep Martinez. He also expertly converted it into goal. Chiesa also found Vlahovic with a lovely curler. But just like the rest of his teammates, he ran out of steam in the second period.

Substitutes

Arkadiusz Milik – 5.5  ...........

Timothy Weah – 5  ...........

Samuel Iling-Junior – 5.5

The Juventus youngster started his cameo in an awkward midfield role. He eventually switched to his natural role on the wing but it was too little too late.

Kenan Yildiz – N/A

Juventus 1 - Genoa 1: Initial reaction and random observations

Juve gained ground on Inter, but not exactly in the kind of way that you wanted them to do so.

FBL-ITA-SERIEA-GENOA-JUVENTUS

The catch with how Max Allegri wants to play his football is that there are two very obvious things that you can’t keep thinking about even before kickoff: there’s a razor-thin margin for error, and because of that you’re left to wonder what happens if there’s a sudden change in how things are going if Juventus has a 1-0 lead.

For the most part this season, things haven’t really had to change from the standard deviation. Juve get the 1-0 lead, they hold steady defensively, maybe add a second goal and then we ride that to three points. There hasn’t really needed to be the last-minute craziness like we saw against Monza a couple of weeks ago to begin this string of Friday night fixtures.

On the third and final of three straight Fridays, the tying goal arrived much earlier than the first minute of stoppage time. The answer from Juventus, though? Nope, nowhere to be found. ...........

To put it simply, Juve just weren’t good enough.

And when that happens, one mistake could end up hurting you greatly. ...........

The fact is, Allegri’s way of playing is sustainable until it isn’t. It’s a fine line, and this is going to play the way of eking out potential wins much more often than they’re going to cruise by teams that are sitting just above the relegation zone.

Juve had avoided games like this one pretty much all season long. But on this Friday night, they got bit in the ass by simply being unable to generate enough goals other than the one they scored from the penalty spot. That, my friends, is something that isn’t new — at all.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • If you’re truly wanting to get a second goal, maybe bring on somebody like Kenan Yildiz earlier than the 87th minute? I dunno, Max. Just an idea from a guy on the internet.
  • “Here’s your three minutes plus stoppages, Kenan, go get ‘em!”
  • Reminds me of the days when Sebastian Giovinco would be brought on right before stoppage time of a game like this one with the hopes of him suddenly turning the tide back in Juve’s favor. Ah, memories...
  • One more Yildiz-related note: How that wasn’t a red card on Ruslan Malinovskyi, I really have absolutely no freaking idea. That’s studs up, leg clearly well off the turf and right into Yildiz’s shin and ankle. Red card 100% of the time. Serie A refereeing incompetence strikes again.
  • Oh, and this wasn’t ruled a hand ball. Got it. ...........
  • There were so many misplaced and bad passes. So many bad touches — that free kick late in which Federico Chiesa got the ball from Samuel Iling-Junior and then totally cooked his first touch right into the path of a Genoa player ... woof! It was just bad times all around.
  • All four of Juventus’ subs didn’t really add much of anything. ...........
  • I repeat, one of Juventus’ best scoring chances was thanks to Bremer’s groin and the only reason it wasn’t a goal was due to a great save being made. If this is what we’re saying about your scoring chances on the day, then maybe it’s not exactly a good thing.
  • So now we have to root for Lazio to do something good against Inter on Sunday night. Judging by how Lazio have played this season, that’s not exactly the best thing in the world. Also, rooting for Lazio in general just seems like not the best thing there is. So yeah, here’s to hoping Lazio does something good, but I’m not exactly planning on it. I’ll choose to be pleasantly surprised if something good actually does happen.
