Pundit insists Juventus should have defeated Genoa

Juve held to a draw at Genoa - Juventus

While on punditry duty, Alessandro Santarelli believes Juventus had the chance to defeat Genoa this evening, but they must now focus on upcoming games. ...........

Juve faced Genoa, knowing their opponents were a tricky team that was difficult to defeat at home. ...........

Santarelli said:

“This is a match that you could and should have won, but I always have in mind the three minutes of mistakes and horrors at the start of the second half, but now we must not cause drama and start again with specious criticisms, now head to Frosinone and then to Roma.” ...........

Allegri: Juve need to grow to stay on top

Coach’s comments after draw at Genoa slows progress

FBL-ITA-SERIEA-GENOA-JUVENTUS

Juventus faltered in their latest attempt to leapfrog Inter at the summit of Serie A after being held to a 1-1 draw away at Genoa. The visitors took the lead from a clinically dispatched penalty via Federico Chiesa in the second half, but the hosts then clawed their way back into the game with a well-taken equalizer early in the second half. Both sides then had chances to grab all three points but in the end the goalies on both sides kept the scores even.

Speaking after the game, coach Massimiliano Allegri stayed upbeat despite the chance of Inter Milan stretching their lead to four points with a win over Lazio on Sunday.

“It wasn’t easy to play against this Genoa, the team gave a good performance. But we need to grow because to stay on top, we need to capitalize and be more effective.

“When you have to kill the opponent, it has to be done, when you have important chances, you have to score.

“It’s an important point, let’s continue the positive streak, and now we have to prepare for Frosinone. I’m happy with the performance.”

There were plenty who weren’t impressed by some of the decision-making of the referee Davide Massa.

“The referee was good, I’m happy. I never make judgements, it’s not part of my job. In all matches there are similar moments that are evaluated in one way or another.

“It’s difficult to have a single guideline because the incident is subjective. If we get into subjective stuff, I said it seven years ago, it becomes a problem.”

Is there a problem with consistency across referees?

“It’s normal that there isn’t any because they are subjective cases. It’s not offside, it’s old stuff and I said it years ago. The referees are good, they referee well, and they should be left to referee.” ...........

Draw at Genoa puts brakes on Juventus’ momentum

A dire second half and a clear lack of a plan offensively laid bare the limitations of the team’s current tactics.

Genoa CFC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Ah, the Marassi.

Time and time again, Juventus go into the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, and time and time again some weird crap happens that sees either Sampdoria or Genoa taking points off the Old Lady. The curse seems like it’s been on for over a decade now, with Juve failing to defeat — and often losing to — teams that have absolutely no business getting a result on the day.

So was Friday night’s game against Genoa. Juventus got their heads in front after half an hour when they capitalized on a mistake from the hosts to earn and convert a penalty. But after some serious warning signs the last few weeks, the weakness of the way Massimiliano Allegri has been playing finally bit Juve in the rear.

Genoa equalized within minutes of the restart, and for the rest of the half the Bianconeri looked bereft of ideas — when the home team wasn’t putting them under some significant pressure. Their only two serious chances to get back in front came on another serious Genoa mistake and a corner, respectively. When the final whistle confirmed the 1-1 score, Juventus had tripped up in a big way, leaving the way open for Inter to add to their league lead when they face a faltering Lazio team on Sunday. ...........

The game had all the makings of a frustrating one when Genoa made a major mistake. Badelj made a heavy touch off a pass from Malinovskyi and presented it straight to Vlahovic, who immediately slipped Chiesa into the box. The winger tried to round Martinez, only to end up on the ground in a heap when the keeper’s hands caught him in the shins. Referee Davide Massa had an easy penalty call.

After Vlahovic missed his last two penalties, it was Chiesa who stepped up to take this one — a surprise indeed considering he had last taken a penalty kick in the 2019-20 season. But he buried his shot, firing left while Martinez went the other way, ending his two month long goal drought at the club level and giving Juve that all-too-familiar 1-0 lead.

Juventus miss out on top spot after Genoa draw

Genoa CFC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Juve probably should’ve had another penalty three minutes later when De Winter pulled Vlahovic down by the shirt as he tried to shoot in the right channel, but both Massa and VAR official Michael Fabbri declined to intervene. ...........

Juve’s team defense was shambolic. McKennie missed the opportunity to at least get the ball clear when he got a foot to Ekuban’s square pass into the middle, allowing Badelj and Frendrup to combine to get the ball back to the Ghanaian in the box. Bremer was left with a choice of who to mark and went for the man with the ball the ball, leaving Gudmundson completely alone. Ekuban executed perfectly, chesting the ball to himself and then heading it into the path of Gudmundson for to finish from 7 yards, grazing Szczesny’s fingertips as it went by.

Gudmundsson risponde a Chiesa, finisce 1-1: il Genoa frena la Juve - Calcio - Ansa.it

Juventus should’ve been back on top within minutes. Martinez was trying to hit a pass out of his own box to Sabelli, but Chiesa was right there and jumped the pass. The keeper somehow recovered and sprawled at Chiesa’s feet to get a hand to the ball as Chiesa tried to put it over him. Two minutes later, Bani appeared to have handled a Cambiaso cross, but again no check was made and Genoa got away with another potential penalty. ...........

Searching for another late winner as the game entered its end stages, they very nearly found it when Chiesa sent in a free kick in the 88th minute. The delivery evaded the heads of three Genoa defenders and found Bremer on the back end. The Brazilian tried to bundle it in with his stomach (or possibly a slightly lower body part) and looked sure to have emulated his defensive partner Gatti in the late winner department. But Martinez somehow threw his hand up and tipped the ball over the bar, denying Juve their best chance to score in more than half an hour.

FBL-ITA-SERIEA-GENOA-JUVENTUS

Another puzzling refereeing decision deprived Juve of a late advantage when Malinovskyi was spared a red card after hitting Kenan Yildiz with a studs-up challenge halfway up his shin, receiving only a yellow instead.

Massa e gli errori clamorosi in Genoa-Juve: perché c'erano un rigore e un'espulsione

LE PAGELLE

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 6.5. Didn’t have a whole ton to do, but did well to come off his line to deny Ekuban a go-ahead goal in the middle of the second half. Left out to dry on the goal — and even then he got fingertips to the shot.

FEDERICO GATTI - 5.5. ...........

BREMER - 6. ...........

DANILO - 5.5. ...........

ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6.5. ...........

WESTON McKENNIE - 5.5. ...........

MANUEL LOCATELLI - 5. ...........

FABIO MIRETTI - 4.5. He was something of a void in the midfield. ...........

FILIP KOSTIC - 4.5. ...........

FEDERICO CHIESA - 7. That missed opportunity when he jumped Martinez prevents this from even being slightly higher. He was a real handful for Genoa in the first half, although he cooled off a little in the second. Far and way led not only the team but the game in key passes with four, and compared to Kostic he was 4-for-8 on crosses, most of which came from the same side.

DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 5. Hard for a striker to flourish when he only touches the ball 24 times, but the miss in front of goal on Chiesa’s cross was a tough one, and against Genoa he was a step slow on the little things that he’s been doing very well of late.

Genoa CFC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

SUBS

ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 5. Only touched the ball seven times in 23 minutes ...........

TIMOTHY WEAH - 5. ...........

SAMUEL ILING-JUNIOR - 5. ...........

KENAN YILDIZ - NR. Needed to be on the field earlier than this. Didn’t have time to contribute beyond taking that horrible tackle from Malinovskyi.

MANAGER ANALYSIS

This game laid bare some of the problems with the way Allegri has been coaching in his second tenure. We’ve talked each of the last two weeks about Juve having gotten lucky some lucky breaks. This is what happens when the luck runs out and the defense doesn’t play inch-perfect football.

Also exposed in this game was the fact that Allegri really doesn’t have much in the way of ideas for scoring outside the counterattack. Juve held a lot of possession in this game and simply looked lost as to how to score with it. There was a general lack of urgency in this team, up to and including deep into stoppage time, which is a coaching issue as well. Allegri has no Plan B right now other than throw subs on and hope that their individual quality stands out amongst their peers. ...........

Genoa CFC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

There were issues with Allegri’s in-game management as well, specifically his subs. First off, they started happening well after the point where it became clear a change might help the team. Then he put Iling-Junior on in midfield, who was clearly uncomfortable without the space to move on the wing. Perhaps most at issue is the timing of the introduction of Yildiz, who was only given three minutes to make an impact for a team that desperately needed him in the absence of Paul Pogba and Nicoló Fagioli. Predictably, he wasn’t able to make that happen. He should’ve had a lot more time on the field to work against a tired Genoa defense.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Friday fixtures are over — and we right into a lunchtime kickoff on Saturday against Frosinone with Serie A electing not to have any games on Sunday/Christmas Eve. A prime-time game against Roma at home finishes out the calendar year.

Commentator insists Juventus deserved another penalty against Genoa

Bani tocca il pallone con la mano in area di rigore: il Var non interviene, la Juve protesta

Commentator Luca Marelli has analysed an incident in Juventus’ draw against Genoa and insists the Bianconeri deserved another penalty in that match.

Juve drew the game despite going in front in the first half through Federico Chiesa, and it dealt a significant blow to their title ambitions. ...........

However, the Bianconeri probably should have had another penalty in the fixture after Mattia Bani appeared to have handled the ball in his penalty box.

Surprisingly, VAR was not called even to check, leaving Marelli baffled, as he seemed to believe it was a clear-cut penalty. ...........

“We have to understand why VAR didn’t intervene in a couple of circumstances, which were quite clear. The first is a touch from Bani’s hands, on a cross from the right. The touch is very evident, it’s a penalty kick: perhaps the VAR didn’t intervene because he saw a touch with the leg first, but this doesn’t change.

“The touching of hands is punishable however, his arm is wide and does not close. I was very surprised that VAR wasn’t called out. It is an arm contact that should have been punished, without disciplinary sanction but with a penalty for Juventus.” ...........

Locatelli insists everyone is at fault for Juventus’ draw against Genoa

Dovevamo vincerla in campo!": Locatelli allontana alibi e polemiche dopo Genoa-Juventus - Calcio | Tribuna.com

Manuel Locatelli insists that every Juventus player is at fault for their failure to win their game against Genoa last night. ...........

Juventus scored once from the penalty spot, but they had other chances to increase their lead, which they failed to capitalise on.

The missed opportunities proved costly in the end, and Juventus will remain behind Inter Milan, struggling to reclaim the top spot if the Nerazzurri win their game.

After the fixture, Locatelli said:

“We conceded a goal that we don’t usually concede, I’m things that can happen but then you have to react. Opportunities must be exploited, it’s everyone’s fault because we have to take the step of scoring more and closing out games.” ...........

Allegri backs Genoa v Juventus referee and insists he did well :|

Massa.jpg

In the aftermath of Juventus’ match against Genoa, which ended in a 1-1 draw with several controversies, including potential penalty decisions, Max Allegri was questioned about the performance of the referee.

While Juventus could have earned a second penalty in the game that might have influenced the outcome, decisions went against them, leaving some fans discontented. ...........

The Bianconeri manager did not have anything bad to say and said:

“Massa played a good game, I’m happy and I never make judgments because it’s not my job. There are always episodes that are evaluated in one way and another, there is no single guideline because it is subjective. 6-7 years ago against Atalanta we had a goal disallowed so after a minute and a half, we shouldn’t have any controversy. It’s normal for there to be no uniformity, these are subjective cases. With offside you can’t escape, here it becomes subjective. The referees on the field are good.” ...........

Marcello Chirico blasts VAR for its role in Juventus draw against Genoa

Mistero Massa dopo Genoa-Juve: non va mai al Var. Spuntano tre ipotesi

Juventus could have potentially secured a second penalty in their 1-1 draw against Genoa, a decision that might have influenced the game’s final result. However, VAR did not review a potential handball incident in the Genoa area, and no decision was made regarding the infringement.

The absence of a second penalty has sparked post-match discussions, with several pundits expressing the belief that Juventus was denied a crucial opportunity that could have led to a game-winning goal. ...........

Columnist Marcello Chirico was not impressed by VAR not checking the incident in the Juve game for a potential foul:

“While not using the word “conspiracy”, it is clear that something about the use of VAR has not worked and not just since Friday. And it cannot even be denied that, by continuing at this rate, matches are ruined and championships are distorted. Because if Juventus had also been able to take advantage of the second penalty, perhaps they would have won the match and she would momentarily return to the top of the standings. But perhaps letting Juve win with 2 (net) penalties would have been more scandalous than not having applied the regulation.” ...........

Massimo Pavan admits VAR could ruin Juventus chance of winning the league

Video Assistant Referee: What is VAR and how does it work? | DAZN News US

Massimo Pavan has acknowledged that the inconsistency of VAR could become Juventus’ biggest problem this season, as the Bianconeri suffered from another poor VAR call over the weekend.

Juventus ended their match against Genoa in a 1-1 draw, and their frustration mounted when they were denied a second penalty. The team believed a Genoa player had handled the ball in the box, but the referee showed no interest, and VAR did not review the incident. ...........

Having closely followed Juventus, Pavan said:

“This draw could be decisive for their ambitions Juventus’ championship, unless VAR starts working as it should, it’s already game over for Allegri’s team.” ...........

Former footballer says there is little difference between Juventus and AC Milan

Juventus vs. AC Milan | DAZN US

Former Verona star Antonio Di Gennaro has identified Juventus and AC Milan as the challengers to Inter Milan for the Serie A title.

Juventus has been diligently working towards securing the league title this season and remained in contention for an extended period. However, over the weekend, Inter Milan extended their lead to four points, marking the widest margin between the two teams in weeks.

While Juventus has been a strong competitor, Inter Milan has been considered a favourite from the start of the season. ...........

“That Inter is the strongest team, that it is difficult to find an alternative between Juventus and Milan. Inter demonstrated that they play very well, that they know how to manage the various moments of the match, and have a great balance between defense and attack.” ...........

Allegri insists Juventus is not settling for second place

Voor coach Massimiliano Allegri is Juventus geen titelkandidaat: 'Dat is Inter' | Flashscore.nl

Juventus is facing challenges in keeping up with Inter Milan at the summit of the Serie A table. ...........

A feasible scenario for Juventus could involve securing a second-place finish in the standings and potentially clinching victory in the Italian Cup. Considering their initial goal of securing a place within the top four, achieving these milestones would mark a successful season for the Bianconeri.

As the competition intensifies, Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri was questioned about the possibility of settling for second place in the league while aiming to secure the Coppa Italia.

He said:

“I don’t settle for anything. We must play and win games because it’s not easy.

“We must get to the end of the Girone d’andata and see how many points we have. The target is the Champions League.” ...........

Supersub Vlahovic helps Juventus to beat courageous Frosinone.

SERIE A. Juventus blijft in spoor van leider Inter na late zege bij Frosinone, Charles De Ketelaere en Atalanta verliezen in slotminuten | Het Nieuwsblad Mobile

When the lineup for Juventus’ match against Frosinone was revealed, Max Allegri made a bold move by choosing to bench Dusan Vlahovic in favour of Kenan Yildiz. This decision proved fruitful as the young Turkish player justified his selection by opening the scoring just 12 minutes into the game. Juve confidence was high that they could secure a victory against a talented Frosinone side. ...........

Frosinone managed to equalise six minutes into the second half, gaining confidence as the match progressed. Recognising the need for changes, Allegri decided to introduce Dusan Vlahovic into the game after Yildiz proved ineffective in the second half.

Vlahovic, determined to make a statement, posed numerous problems for Frosinone with his dynamic running and strategic positioning. Eventually, he found the back of the net, putting Juve ahead 2-1. Although another brilliant goal by Vlahovic was disallowed due to an offside call, Juventus secured the victory, bouncing back from dropping points against Genoa. ...........

Pundit says Juventus needed to do better in the second half

Frosinone 1-2 Juventus Turin, Serie A : résumé du match (23/12/2023) - L'Équipe

Pundit Alessandro Santarelli has reviewed Juventus’ match against Frosinone this afternoon and says they had a good first half but did not improve much in the second period.

The Bianconeri had to win the game against Frosinone after dropping points in the match against Genoa. ...........

The newly promoted side also has some fine Juventus youngsters on loan in their team, and these individuals were expected to try to impress.

Juve started the game well and was terrific in the first half, as they did well to ensure Frosinone had little joy. ...........

Santarelli said:

“I’m very happy with the victory and Vlahovic’s goal. Juve had a good first half, then a bad second half with Allegri who made a mistake with the substitutions, removing Yildiz too early. And now I say something strong: Yildiz, from today he must be a certainty and not only play the final minutes. And whoever doesn’t feel like playing should say so calmly because we have the players to replace them.” ...........

Kenan Yildiz praises Max Allegri for believing in him

Highlights and goals of Frosinone 1-2 Juventus in Serie A | 12/23/2023 - VAVEL USA

Max Allegri surprisingly handed Kenan Yildiz his full debut as Juventus defeated Frosinone this afternoon.

Without Federico Chiesa, who is not fully fit, Juve’s next top striker is Dusan Vlahovic, but Allegri boldly benched the Serbian to start Yildiz.

The Turkey international did not disappoint as he opened the scoring with a very fine goal.

Juve would even concede an equaliser before scoring the winning goal, but Yildiz made his mark with that strike. ...........

“The coach is a great coach for me, and I say thank you for everything he is doing for me, today I had my chance. When he told me to cut my hair I did it because in the end he is the boss.” ...........

Allegri: Yildiz is Chiesa’s natural replacement

Coach’s comments after Juve grab three points late on

Frosinone Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Juventus needed a late goal to get all three points away at Frosinone with second half substitute Dusan Vlahovic grabbing the winner after young striker Kenan Yildiz had given them an early lead.

Speaking after the game coach Massimiliano Allegri continued to insist that his goal for the season is just the Champions League.

“We played a good game, only Napoli had won here. There is a magical environment here. It wasn’t easy.

“The first half was excellent, but we had created a lot and scored only once, so it was normal that we would drop a little in the second half. I haven’t seen their goal yet, but I think we could have done more. The reaction was good anyway. I am happy for Yildiz, Dusan and the whole team. It’s an extraordinary group that never gives up.

“Yildiz is young and has enthusiasm, which is needed at these moments. He is wise for his age. I picked him when Chiesa got injured, he is Chiesa’s natural replacement. ...........

“Now we have reached the 40-point mark and we can have a good Christmas. Let’s see how many points we’ll earn in games against Roma and Salernitana and how close we can get to a Champions League placement.” ...........

Vlahovic did not start the game and Allegri explained why.

“He had played three good games, but he had been criticised, so he needed to self-soothe,” Allegri explained.

“He could give us great help in the final minutes. He knows he has to improve, especially at a mental level and he played well when he was introduced.”

Juventus 2 - Frosinone 1: Delayed reaction and random observations

Things against Frosinone were never expected to be easy. And that’s how it played out, although some of that was Juve being Juve again.

Frosinone Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

As the second half at the Benito Stirpe rolled on Saturday afternoon, there was a very familiar thought going through my incredibly sleepy head. It was that of “Here we go again.” It was eight days ago in which Juventus scored an early goal and looked relatively solid in the opening 45 minute only to surrender that lead early in the second half and look bang-up crap trying to get the lead back.

All those happy feelings after you watched Kenan Yildiz cook 30% of Frosinone’s outfield players were gone and replaced by vibes that weren’t good and probably all too familiar.

But, thankfully, the late goal in which Juve could never get against Genoa two Fridays ago arrived through a much-maligned source.

Dusan Vlahovic’s first scoring opportunity of the afternoon didn’t result in a goal, but you couldn’t say the same about his second. Juventus’ under-fire No. 9 rose high to get his head on a Weston McKennie cross — which, for some reason, came with all of the time in the world that he wanted to try and ensure he got it right — to put the Bianconeri back in front of Frosinone with just over 10 minutes to go. Vlahovic nearly had a second-half brace, only to be denied by VAR, but Juve were able to hang on and get the 2-1 win to get back on track. ...........

The overall performance once Frosinone tied things up wasn’t great — or really anything close to it. But when Juventus actually put something on frame in the second half — only two of their seven shots after the break were on target — they were able to convert it and avoid any sort of situation like what happened in Genoa.

That’s better than the alternative. You know, the one we saw play out last week. Who knows if Juventus can continue to do this these next few months, but avoid any sort of not-so-good thoughts about dropping points from previous weeks, months or seasons alike is always going to be greatly appreciated.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Pre-game thought No. 1: KENAN YILDIZ!
  • Pre-game thought No. 2: Matias Soulé! Enzo Barrenechea! Kaio Jorge! All the kids!
  • That goal from Yildiz ... that’s just something special from a kid who just seems like the kind of player that this Juventus team needs right now. To do that 12 minutes into your first-ever senior team start with Juve and then go on to have the kind of performance he did, that shows that an 18-year-old kid was not intimidated by the moment at all. Instead, he took it and ran with it — and that’s what you want to see from somebody his age.
  • Seriously, though, Yildiz did that with three dudes around him and then snuck in a shot at the near post that was impossible to stop. It will easily be one of the best goals a Juventus player will score this season.
  • Plus, any time you can see a celebration alla Del Piero it’s always good times.

Serie A, Frosinone-Juventus 1-2. Yildiz e Vlahovic regalano i tre punti ad Allegri | OneFootball

  • For as good as Yildiz’s individual effort was on his goal, that’s how bad Juve’s defending was on Frosinone’s goal. There’s not one single person at fault for it, but there are some very guilty parties that played a role in all that happening.
  • The performance from the three on-loan players at Frosinone was good but not great. Soulé, as expected, was the best of the three, but it’s not like he was wowing anybody with how he played. He was involved plenty, playing a free-roaming kind of role as Eusebio Di Francesco came out in a 3-4-2-1 setup compared to Frosinone’s usual 4-2-3-1. thanks to all the injuries on his roster. Soulé will definitely be left with a feeling that he left a little to be desired, but there were some good things that he did even without any goals to his name.

Frosinone Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

  • All of the outside noise about Vlahovic and the season he’s having again this year doesn’t look to be impacting his teammates. They were celebrating Vlahovic’s goal just as hard as Vlahovic celebrates their goals. This team is not as talented as the one that’s in front of them in the standings, but they certainly are a united group that has each other’s back — and that’s never a bad thing to see.
  • Also, seeing Vlahovic and Marco Landucci celebrate that hard together, that was amusing. ...........

  • Before the game Max Allegri was talking about how Timothy Weah doesn’t have 90 minutes in his legs. Well, with Andrea Cambiaso getting a yellow against Frosinone and thus a suspension for yellow card accumulation, we better hope Weah has more minutes in his legs than Max says come next weekend. Or that Fabio Miretti is in a little better shape than he was last weekend against Genoa if McKennie goes out wide.
  • Speaking of Weston, I still have no idea why Frosinone gave him all that time to cross it. It reminded me of an NBA team just daring somebody to shoot a 3-pointer, the guy measures it up and then just drills it perfectly. That’s basically what McKennie did with his cross, and then Vlahovic did the rest. ...........

Juventus struggle but give fans a Christmas present against Frosinone

Juve couldn’t make their early lead stand up on its own, but this time managed to snag a late winner.

Frosinone Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

After last Friday night’s stumble at Genoa, Juventus took to their second straight road game with a clear objective: get back on track before next weekend’s last big game of the calendar year against Roma.

Their opponent: a Frosinone team that can and has been called a Juventus farm team this year. Three Juve players are on loan to the Serie B title winners, and a fourth is likely on his way in January. But the Canarini are no slouches. Despite a rough run of form lately, they’ve done well for a promoted team. They’d amassed 17 of their 19 points at the Stadio Benito Stirpe this year, only losing to Napoli — a result they avenged in decisive fashion midweek, when they went into the Maradonna and pummeled the Partenopei 4-0 in the Coppa Italia.

Coming off the emotional high of that win, the home team wasn’t just going to be a speed bump. But Juve made an early statement when teenage attacker Kenan Yildiz marked his first senior team start with his first senior team goal on an incredible solo effort. But just like last week, corto muso failed the Bianconeri early in the second half, when a defensive lapse allowed the hosts to level the score.

For long stretches after the equalizer, Frosinone looked like the team more likely to score the game’s second goal, only for Juve to snag the go-ahead score with 10 minutes left of an excellent cross and header combination between Weston McKennie and Dusan Vlahovic, giving them a 2-1 lead that they would hold this time, taking three points and keeping pace with Inter, who beat Lecce later in the day to maintain their four-point advantage in the title race. ...........

The opening phases of the match were mostly controlled by Juve — a nice change of pace for once to see them take the game to an inferior team. McKennie nearly fed Milik in the seventh minute after darting into the box and pulling it across, but Romagnoli stepped in at the last second to tip the ball behind.

But it was Yildiz who stole the spotlight five minutes later.

He’d already previewed some of his close control and passing skills, but what he did to score the opening goal was truly special. After Kostic pounced on a terrible ball out of the box by Turati (credit there should go to Milik for a good press), he fed the teenage Turk, who was immediately surrounded by three — three! — Frosinone defenders. He somehow slipped both the ball and his person through an opening between Kirona and Monterisi, breaking into the box and hitting a laser from two yards above the corner of the six that was past Turati before he could even move. It was a wondrous goal the likes of which Juve hasn’t seen since Paulo Dybala was at his very best, and Yildiz capped it off with a Del Piero-esque tounge-wagging celebration.

Frosinone Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Juve went into the half very much the better side despite their slender lead, but much like last week at the Marassi it didn’t take all that long for that to implode.

Once again, it was a failure of team defense that conceded the equalizer. Several mistakes snowballed into one big clustercuss. Kostic gave Baez far too much room to get a running start and get behind him on the left flank, while Bremer anticipated a run through the middle by Kaio Jorge that never came, playing the Urugayan very much onside. When Monterisi slipped a pass between Kostic and Danilo, all Szczesny could do was charge off his line and get big, but Baez put it neatly past him to tie the score.

Two minutes after the goal, Juve suffered another blow when Locatelli pulled up and had to come off the field in the company of the trainers. Allegri used the opportunity to make a triple change with his second window, sending on Vlahovic and Samuel Iling-Junior in along with Hans Nicolussi Caviglia. ...........

Substitute Abdou Harroui very nearly gave them the lead with a long-distance belter in the 72nd minute, but Szczesny, wearing a baseball cap to protect his eyes from the glare of the bright sunlight, flew up and tipped it just over the bar to keep the game tied.

Frosinone Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Juve very nearly snatched the lead back two minutes later when McKennie latched on to the end of a ball by Rabiot and hit a powerful scissor kick volley that pinged off the crossbar into the air and behind. It was looking like one of those days where Juve would pay for their mistakes until the 81st minute, when they finally struck pay dirt.

McKennie this time turned provider, playing one-two on the wing with sub Timothy Weah, receiving the ball with an immense amount of room to measure up the cross. His ball was perfect, and Vlahovic rose higher than the rest, powering a header up into the top far corner of the net and reestablishing Juve’s advantage at 2-1.

The Serbian striker nearly doubled his tally in the dying moments of normal time, taking a pass from Iling-Junior in full stride and cooly finishing past Turati, but he was flagged offside not long after the ball went into the net, denying him a brace by about half the length of his torso. ...........

LE PAGELLE

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 8. There are no words to describe how important that save on Harroui was. Not only was it brilliant, it was likely decisive, as it would’ve been hard for Juve to muster a response to a second Frosinone goal. Absolutely immense.

DANILO - 6. ...........

BREMER - 6. ...........

ALEX SANDRO - NR. ...........

ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6. Added a pair of key passes on the day to four clearances before being taken off for his own good. Carrying a first-half yellow card he very much risked the prospect of more with some persistent fouling before finally being removed. It’s a shame in the end that he gave Allegri no choice but to sub him out, and that he’ll be unavailable against Roma due to yellow card accumulation.

WESTON McKENNIE - 7. Continues to be a workhorse. Spent his time swapping positions with Cambiaso until the latter came off, and measured up an absolute peach of a cross to provide for the winner.

Frosinone Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

MANUEL LOCATELLI - 5.5. ...........

ADRIEN RABIOT - 5. ...........

FILIP KOSTIC - 5. ...........

KENAN YILDIZ - 7.5. What a phenomenal debut. His goal was obviously stunning, and he was really good at connecting the midfield with Milik and the rest of the attack. He even made two tackles. He didn’t look like a teenager amongst grown men, he looked like a guy that belongs at this level. His minutes count needs to jump significantly.

ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 6. Didn’t take a shot in the match, but had two key passes, was constantly getting others involved, and his press forced Turati into the mistake that led to the opening goal. Did a ton of the dirty work today.

SUBS

FEDERICO GATTI - 6. ...........

HANS NICOLUSSI CAVIGLIA - 5.5. ...........

SAMUEL ILING-JUNIOR - 5. ...........

DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 6.5. Looked like another difficult day when he missed what was pretty much a sitter soon after coming on, but the header for his goal was excellent, and while he was flagged offside on the play right before stoppage time, the finish had the look of the Vlahovic of old. Hopefully this one gives him some long-term confidence, but he needs to keep it going. Next week against an injury-ravaged Roma defense is a big chance to do so.

Frosinone Calcio v Juventus - Serie A TIM

TIMOTHY WEAH - 5. ...........

***BONUS LOANEE RATINGS***

ENZO BARRENECHEA - 6.5. Excellent day as a holding midfielder. He completed 89.8 percent of his passes and racked up three tackles, four clearances, and an interception. He also completed all six of his long balls. The Juve midfield could probably use him next season.

MATIAS SOULE - 6. Frosinone’s attack ran through him, and he very nearly ruined Juve’s day with that shot that near miss just before the hour. His skill is obvious, and Juve need to keep him in the fold for next season and far beyond.

KAIO JORGE - 5.5. Didn’t see a whole ton of the ball, but he used his movement off the ball quite well, and the threat of a run pushed Bremer back before the Frosinone goal, creating a salient in the offside trap that Baez took full advantage of. He’s still a very intriguing player, but needs to pump up the numbers in the rest of the season.

MANAGER ANALYSIS

Allegri didn’t make any overt mistakes in this match, but when combined with last week’s result at Genoa it still illustrates the weakness in the way he coaches these days. The unsustainability of this “one goal and hold” philosophy is starting to be writ rather large. Even against a pair of newly promoted sides, a single mistake can be incredibly costly, and there still isn’t much of a plan when it comes to trying to recover if one of those mistakes is made. Juve looked listless for much of the second half, to the point that it very much felt that Frosinone were the more likely to score a second goal for much of the period.

That might have changed had Yildiz been able to stay on the field longer, but he started cramping up, which is why he came off as early as he did. But Allegri still needs to put more emphasis on finishing teams off earlier in games — and the young Turk might be the key.

Frosinone Calcio v Juventus FC - Serie A

Yildiz’s performance on Saturday might represent an inflection point in Allegri’s second tenure with the club. He represents a skill set that the team hasn’t had in a while. His ability to link the midfield and attack can paper over some of the deficiencies of this midfield, and provide a creative spark that has been deeply lacking. The question now is whether Allegri will treat Yildiz as an either/or player along with Chiesa, or if he takes the chance and plays Yildiz along with Chiesa and Vlahovic at the same time.

The current formation can easily be tweaked to accommodate such a lineup. A 3-4-1-2 is the most likely way it could work, at least this season. Having the three of them on the field together could well make the attack a lot more flexible and efficient. Yildiz’s abilities as a trequartista/seconda punta can effectively connect the midfield and the attack, while allowing Chiesa to range out wide, which is instinctual for him but not necessarily something that makes a front two work. I can see a lot of Serie A defenses urinating in their shorts having to deal with the three of them together in full flight. The double pivot in that formation would be a benefit as well, as it would help to cover the club’s lack of depth in midfield following the suspensions of Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli.

The old Max, the Max that brought Juve to two Champions League finals and pulled the Five Star lineup out of the ether in the 2016-17 season, would probably have concocted such a scheme. What happens now will tell us a lot about whether that Max is still there, buried and waiting to judge that he has the players to do something more than just defend and counter, or if this Max is just what Allegri is nowadays — the shell of the coach that led the club to Cardiff.

LOOKING AHEAD

Saturday is the last game of the 2023 calendar year as Juve welcome Roma to the Allianz. Then the new year begins with back-to-back matches against Salernitana, first in the Coppa Italia and then in Serie A.

Allegri lauds Juventus scoring duo: “Yildiz already mature, I knew Vlahovic can be decisive”

Dalla quota Champions alle prestazioni di Vlahovic e Yildiz: le parole di Allegri dopo il successo con il Frosinone - Calcio | Tribuna.com

Following Saturday’s win over Frosinone, Juventus coach Max Allegri heaped praise on his strikers Dusan Vlahovic and Kenan Yildiz.

With Federico Chiesa ruled out by an injury, the Turkish teenager made his full debut, starting alongside Arkadiusz Milik in attack.

The 18-year-old broke the deadlock with a splendid finish after dribbling past three opponents in one fell swoop.

The Canarini then pulled off an equalizer in the second half through Jaime Baez. Nevertheless, Vlahovic entered the pitch to deliver a late winner after turning Weston McKennie’s cross goalwards.

Therefore, Allegri only had words of praise for his two scorers while insisting that his team has exceeded expectations by collecting 40 points before Christmas. ...........

“Starting on the bench reassured Vlahovic, after the criticism of the last matches. I knew that he could give us a hand in the last 30 minutes and so he did. He is also growing mentally.

“Yildiz is very mature. With Federico Chiesa out of action, I decided to deploy Kenan because he’s his natural replacement,” concluded the Juventus manager.

Takeaways from Frosinone vs Juventus: Yildiz delights, unsung hero saves the day

frosinone-v-juventus-1.jpg

With a host of Juventus youth products invading the pitch, the encounter between Frosinone and the Bianconeri could have been nicknamed the “Matteo Tognozzi Derby”.

The former Juventus Chief Scout has recently departed Italy, but his splendid work in Turin was celebrated at the Stadio Benito Stripe with five talents of his exported talents on the pitch, four as starters.

Nevertheless, it was Kenan Yildiz who emerged as the ultimate attraction in Saturday’s early kickoff.

The teenager only needed 12 minutes on his full debut to confirm what most of us already knew. Simply put, the Turkish striker is something else.

The 18-year-old somehow found his way through three opposition players (including Enzo Barrenechea) with one fell swoop before beating Stefano Turati at his near post.

The former Bayern Munich star simply oozed class, making sure that Federico Chiesa was hardly missed, at least for as long as he lasted on the pitch.

Yildiz also worked extremely hard for the team, tracking back to make vital interceptions at times. One might argue that he overdid it, getting himself exhausted by the start of the second half. Perhaps this is the only reason that could justify his exit in the 54th minute, as it surely wasn’t for the lack of quality or effort.

Nevertheless, his substitute, a certain Dusan Vlahovic, eventually restored the Old Lady’s lead, saving Max Allegri the blushes.

All in all, Yildiz is now a reality at Juventus. So let’s hope that this is only the beginning of something special for the player and the club alike. ...........

The Unsung Hero

Thankfully for Juventus, Vlahaovic saved the day with a clinical header worth three points.

However, we must show some love for McKennie who has surprisingly been one of the club’s most consistent performers this season while offering valuable contributions in the middle of the park and on the right flank.

The American almost snatched the winner himself with an astonishing volley that crashed against the crossbar. But in the end, he provided the assist for Vlahovic with a brilliant inswinger, rounding off another impressive shift.

It’s hard to believe that this is the same player that Juventus were keen on getting rid of exactly a year ago.

Juventus sweating over the conditions of three players ahead of Roma clash

Infortunio per Locatelli in Frosinone-Juventus: problema all'anca | Goal.com Italia

While they were happy to secure an important away win in Frosinone, Juventus returned home with three points and as many injury concerns. ...........

Alex Sandro could be the most serious case after being forced to leave the match in the first half due to a muscle strain.

The Brazilian veteran will most likely skip the clash against the Giallorossi.

Moreover, Manuel Locatelli left his spot on the pitch for Hans Nicolussi Caviglia after picking up a knock to the pelvis following a collision with Enzo Barrenechea.

This is an untimely accident for the Italian midfielder who had recently fractured his tenth rib.

Finally, Weston McKennie managed to finish the encounter on the pitch but as the source notes, he was seen limping following a challenge from Francesco Gelli in the first half. ...........

Allegri will also be without Andrea Cambiaso for the encounter against Roma. The wingback picked up his fifth booking of the season so he’ll have to serve a one-match ban.

But the good news for Juventus is the expected return of Federico Chiesa who should overcome his injury and rejoin his teammates in Tuesday’s training session.

Yildiz shines, Kostic disappoints – Italian press hand ratings for Frosinone vs Juventus

Frosinone-Juventus 1-2, segnano Yildiz e Vlahovic - Ildenaro.it

The major Italian newspapers crowned Kenan Yildiz as the best performer in the contest between Frosinone and Juventus.

The Turkish teenager made his full debut on Saturday and marked it with a sensational goal.

The youngster found his way to the box despite being tracked by three opposition players. He then placed his shot at the near post, giving the Old Lady an early lead.

The 18-year-old also displayed other moments of magic, including putting Filip Kostic through on goal with a sublime pass.

Nevertheless, the winger was wasteful on a couple of occasions and received the lowest notes on the board, despite providing the assist for the opener. ...........

Yildiz, Vlahovic and the standout stats recorded in Frosinone vs Juventus

La Juve passa a Frosinone, decide Vlahovic dalla panchina - Calcio - Ansa.it

The club’s official website provided us with some of the most interesting stats and facts registered at the Stadio Benito Stirpe in the pre-Christmas clash.

Excluding the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons (the two campaigns where Juventus were eventually stripped of the title), this is the eighth time that the Bianconeri reach the 40-point threshold in the three-points-per-win era. ...........

Kenan Yildiz scored a marvelous opener on his full debut. He has now become the youngest Juventus foreign scorer in Serie A history (18 years and 233 days), beating the record of Marcelo Zalayeta.

The Turkish starlet has also become only the third player born in 2005 to start a Serie A fixture, joining Frosinone’s Arijon Ibrahimovic and Monza’s Valentin Carboni.

Yildiz is also the first player born after 2004 to start a league match for Juventus. ...........

Finally, Juventus have now scored 11 Serie A goals this season during the opening 30 minutes. Only Fiorentina (12) have a better record in this regard.

Chiesa or Yildiz – Who will Allegri choose against Roma?

JuventusFC on X: "L'origine della magia 🖼️ 🧙 Kenan Yildiz 🇹🇷 #FrosinoneJuve [0-1] https://t.co/66ABDH9i72" / X

Juventus coach Max Allegri could be facing a dilemma ahead of the showdown against Roma, as he might have to choose between Federico Chiesa and Kenan Yildiz.

With the Italian star unavailable through injury, the tactician gave the Turk his full debut against Frosinone last weekend.

The 18-year-old returned the favor with an eye-opening display highlighted by a sensational goal. The youngster found his way to the box between three defenders before placing his shot at the near corner.

Nevertheless, Chiesa’s patellar tendon problem shouldn’t rule him out for too long. The Euro 2020 winner could make his return as early as the next fixture.

So if Allegri were to have both players at his disposal, who would be in the starting line-up against Jose Mourinho’s men next Saturday? ...........
