Juventus have revised their Champions League squad so Martin Caceres and Leonardo Spinazzola are eligible but Juan Cuadrado is not.

Caceres comes in to replace Medhi Benatia, who left Juve for Qatari side Al-Duhail earlier in the week.

Spinazzola is also drafted in with the injured Cuadrado making way, in another show of faith from boss Max Allegri.

The Colombian, for his part, recently had knee surgery and does not look like coming back any time soon.

The Bianconeri get their Champions League last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid on February 20.

Full Juve Champions League list: Szczesny, Perin, Pinsoglio; De Sciglio, Chiellini, Caceres, Pjanic, Khedira, Ronaldo, Dybala, Douglas Costa, Alex Sandro, Matuidi, Barzagli, Mandzukic, Kean, Bonucci, Cancelo, Emre Can, Rugani, Bentancur, Bernardeschi, Spinazzola.

Juventus have Mario Mandzukic back in the starting XI, but revamp the defence with Martin Caceres and Leonardo Spinazzola against Gervinho’s Parma.

It kicks off in Turin at 19.30 GMT - 20.30 CET.

The Bianconeri have looked off the boil recently, fighting back for a barely-deserved win at Lazio and crashing to a 3-0 Coppa Italia quarter-final defeat against Atalanta midweek.

That was a wake-up call and Max Allegri shakes things up, although some of the decisions are forced upon him.

Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli are all out injured, so it’s the first time since March 11, 2012 that all three members of the BBC haven’t been in the squad.

Juan Cuadrado is also on the treatment table, with Wojciech Szczesny rested in favour of Mattia Perin.

The good news is that Miralem Pjanic and Mandzukic make their full comebacks into the starting XI, with Caceres immediately thrown into the back four after the transfer from Lazio.

This is the Uruguay international’s third stint in a Bianconeri jersey and he is joined by Leonardo Spinazzola in his first Serie A start for the club.

Parma are fresh from an upsetting result of their own, fumbling a lead to lose 2-1 at home to SPAL.

Alberto Grassi, Nicola Rigoni, Francisco Sierralta and new buy Abdou Diakhate are unavailable, but Leo Stulac returns for a spot on the bench.

That leaves Matteo Scozzarella in midfield with Juraj Kucka, while Jonathan Biabiany completes the trident attack with Roberto Inglese and Gervinho.

Juventus: Perin; Cancelo, Caceres, Rugani, Spinazzola; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Douglas Costa, Mandzukic, Cristiano Ronaldo

Parma: Sepe; Iacoponi, Bruno Alves, Bastoni, Gagliolo; Scozzarella, Kucka, Barillà; Gervinho, Inglese, Biabiany

Juve lose BBC after seven years

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor rugani e caceres

https://www.football-italia.net/134128/juve-lose-bbc-after-seven-years

Feb 2, 2019

For the first time in seven years, Juventus will be without the full BBC defence of Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

The clash with Parma kicks off tonight at 19.30 GMT - 20.30 CET.

Max Allegri has an injury crisis on his hands, missing Barzagli, Bonucci and Chiellini.

Incredibly, this is the first time since March 2012 that Juve have not been able to count on any of these three players.

They were all unavailable for the 0-0 draw away to Genoa on March 11, 2012.

It’s worth noting that in the interim there have been six games with none of the BBC components in the starting XI.

However, this is the first in which all three are in the stands.

At the time, Chiellini and Barzagli were injured, with Bonucci suspended.

The back four that day were Stephan Lichtsteiner, Martin Caceres – who is also expected to start today – Arturo Vidal in a makeshift centre-back role and Paolo De Ceglie.

HT 1-0: Ronaldo breaks Parma down

Cristiano Ronaldo’s deflected strike has given Juventus the half-time lead over Parma, but a penalty decision was revoked via VAR.

The Bianconeri saw their confidence shaken badly midweek by a 3-0 Coppa Italia drubbing at Atalanta, their first Italian defeat of the season after two Champions League losses to Manchester United and Young Boys. They had Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli and Juan Cuadrado injured, so Martin Caceres was thrown straight in after his transfer from Lazio and Leonardo Spinazzola made his first Serie A start in a Juve jersey, while Miralem Pjanic and Mario Mandzukic returned. The Ducali missed Alberto Grassi, Nicola Rigoni, Francisco Sierralta and Abdou Diakhate, with Leo Stulac only fit for the bench.

The Ducali had a bright start, as Gervinho surged forward from his own half for a shot charged down by Caceres and Matteo Scozzarella’s follow-up was deflected over the bar.

Cristiano Ronaldo stung Luigi Sepe’s gloves with a powerful strike and Juraj Kucka did the same on Mattia Perin, but Sami Khedira came so close when he was set up by Joao Cancelo to hit the upright from nine yards through a crowd of players.

Luck was on Juve’s side soon after, because Cristiano Ronaldo was losing his balance as he scuffed a finish that took a big deflection to wrong-foot Sepe.

Mandzukic’s angled drive tested Sepe and Juventus were awarded a penalty just before half-time. However, after the VAR review the referee spotted if anyone was tugging a jersey, it was Caceres and not Iacoponi, so reversed his decision.

Ronaldo had one more chance before the break, as Mandzukic knocked it down for his angled drive to skim the far post.

Cristiano Ronaldo bagged, but so did Gervinho as Parma fought back from 3-1 down to snatch a stoppage-time 3-3 thriller at the Juventus Stadium.

The Ducali become only the second Serie A side to avoid defeat in Turin this season after Genoa.

Khedira hit the upright for the second time just shy of the hour mark, his header on a Cristiano Ronaldo cross denied by the woodwork.

Moments later, the German did get his curling finish on target, but found Sepe’s one-handed save. On the resulting corner, it was another chaotic goal, with several shots and crosses charged down until Daniele Rugani volleyed in with his left foot at the back stick.

However, Parma immediately got back into it with Kucka’s cross inch-perfect on to the head of Antonino Barillà to steer it back across the face of goal.

The game suddenly sprung to life, as Mandzukic whipped in the ball from the right for a towering Ronaldo header that left Iacoponi standing.

Inglese used his strength to hold off Caceres and flashed an angled drive inches wide of the far post and Ronaldo nodded over from close range.

Parma closed the gap again, as Kucka pulled back from the by-line for a Gervinho back-heel flick, which took a decisive deflection off Rugani’s shin, as the Ivorian managed to get in front of his marker.

Substitute Federico Bernardeschi went off with a knock to the ribs and Inglese turned Rugani for a rising strike that was not far off target.

Deep into stoppages, Mandzukic was trying to keep the ball in play at the corner flag and that allowed Inglese to pull back for totally unmarked Gervinho, whose shot was straight at Perin, but powerful enough to bounce in off his gloves anyway.

Allegri: 'Just kick it into the stands!'

Massimiliano Allegri raged at his Juventus players for their “superficial” attitude in a 3-3 draw with Parma. “Beautiful football doesn’t pay off, at the end of the day just kick it into the stands.”

The Old Lady was 3-1 up and looking comfortable in Turin, but deep into stoppages Mario Mandzukic tried to play the ball at his own corner flag and it fell to Gervinho for the equaliser.

“We were too soft defensively and made several errors,” the Coach told DAZN.

“There were certain moves that were superficial and lacking in the necessary concentration. We need to be more focused, we can’t keep taking things for granted.

“We lowered our guard after going 3-1 up and then again on the final ball for the equaliser. You cannot play with that attitude at the 93rd minute with the ball at the corner flag. It was conceptually the wrong thing to try to keep that in play. Just kick it out.”

Allegri said after the 3-0 Coppa Italia defeat to Atalanta midweek that it had been “in the air,” but evidently the wake-up call was not heeded.

“We were lucky to get the win against Lazio, but we were punished by Parma. We need to do a lot of work on our concentration levels.

“On the first goal, there was a cross we should’ve pushed up on, but Cancelo didn’t follow the run. On the second goal, we moved too early and left a massive gap. It’s not possible to score three goals at home and concede three, it means we’re only playing to attack without thought for defence.”

Juventus did have a completely revamped defence, with Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli out of action.

Leonardo Spinazzola got his first Serie A start in a Bianconeri jersey, while Martin Caceres was thrown straight into central defence just days after his transfer from Lazio.

“It was the first time this back four had played together and we didn’t help the centre-backs, always leaving them in one-on-one situations. They need to realise there is no shame in hoofing the ball into the stands if needs be.

“At least we gave those who complained we weren’t entertaining enough something to enjoy. Beautiful football doesn’t pay off, at the end of the day you’ve got to just kick it away from your goal.”

Napoli beat Sampdoria 3-0 today, so the gap at the top of the table is reduced to nine points.

“That is still a healthy advantage and this setback will ultimately do us good.”

Ronaldo: 'No need to worry'

Cristiano Ronaldo went to the top of the Capocannoniere charts and insisted Juventus were “not worried” by a 3-3 draw with Parma.

He scored twice this evening to take his tally up to 17 Serie A goals, but his team still couldn’t get the full points.

“This is football. I’m happy for the goals, but not the result,” Ronaldo told DAZN.

“Parma waited for us to make a mistake and we were a bit too deep in the final minutes.”

The Bianconeri do seem to be struggling lately, as they fought back to beat Lazio 2-1, lost 3-0 in the Coppa Italia to Atalanta midweek and were held on home turf by Parma in stoppages this evening.

“I don’t think it has anything to do with fitness levels or extra training. This is just football, everyone watches Juve because we are the best team and they try to study ways to beat us, but we just need to stay calm.

“We’re not worried, as we have faith in the team, in our technique, our Coach and the staff. No need to worry.”

Allegri: ‘Dybala must have been cold’

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri has jokingly dismissed claims Paulo Dybala stormed off to the dressing room during the draw with Parma.

The 25-year-old was left on the bench for the 3-3 thriller in Turin, with Federico Bernardeschi’s late injury forcing Allegri to change his approach in the latter stages.

According to Tuttosport, Dybala returned to the dressing room before the full-time whistle sounded and didn’t stay on the bench with his teammates until the end of the game.

However, Allegri seemingly isn’t taking it too seriously as he joked about the reported incident after the game.

“I didn’t even see it, he must have been cold,” he said in his Press conference.

The Argentine international has struggled to hit top form so far this season, scoring just two goals and providing six assists in 19 Serie A appearances.

Juventus are leaking goals

Juventus saw their lead at the top of the table reduced to nine points, but the statistics show an alarming problem in defence.

The Bianconeri were held 3-3 by Parma thanks to a stoppage-time Gervinho strike, despite having been 3-1 up.

Only one other Serie A side had avoided defeat at the Allianz Juventus Stadium this season and that was Genoa, 1-1 on October 20.

Max Allegri’s men have conceded six goals in their last two competitive games, having been beaten 3-0 by Atalanta in the Coppa Italia quarter-final midweek.

Before that, Juve had let in only six goals in the previous 14 matches put together.

Clean sheets are also at a premium, with just one in the last five Serie A games, a 3-0 victory over bottom of the table Chievo, conceding seven goals.

Only Juve still unbeaten

Juventus are the only club still unbeaten in Europe's top five Leagues this season after Paris Saint-Germain lost on Sunday evening.

PSG fell to a 2-1 defeat to Ligue 1 rivals Olympique Lyonnais, leaving Juve as the only side plying their trade in Italy, England, Spain, France or Germany yet to be beaten.

Premier League leaders Liverpool have lost once in 2018-19, whereas Barcelona have twice in La Liga and Borussia Dortmund have on one occasion.

Nonetheless, the Bianconeri were defeated 2-1 by Manchester United earlier in the season and recently suffered a 3-0 reverse to Atalanta in the Coppa Italia.

Their Serie A form, while dominant on paper, has also come in for criticism of late after unconvincing performances against Lazio and Parma.

It comes despite Juve embarking on their worst run in terms of goals conceded since Luigi Del Neri's tenure in 2011.

Paulo Dybala “has apologised and the case is closed,” assured Max Allegri, insisting there’s no split with the Juventus star.

There had been tension after La Joya left the bench to go straight into the locker room after Juve had completed all their substitutions, not waiting for the final whistle of the 3-3 draw with Parma.

This prompted speculation he was at a crossroads, with interest from Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.

“Dybala has apologised, as was only to be expected from an intelligent lad like him,” said the Coach in a Press conference.

“The club gave him a lot of responsibility with the Number 10 jersey. Paulo has understood the situation, so the case is closed.”

Allegri also disputed suggestions Dybala was being played out of position to accommodate Cristiano Ronaldo.

“He has always started and finished moves, it’s just this season he missed or forced a save where last term the ball went into the net. I listen to all this chatter about tactics and it amuses me.

“Tomorrow either Dybala or Federico Bernardeschi will start against Sassuolo. It’s a decision between those two.”

Massimiliano Allegri confirmed “the BBC is available again” from next week and is seeking Juventus balance against impressive Sassuolo.

“If you want a good headline, I’ll give it to you: the BBC is available again,” smiled Allegri in his Press conference, referring to Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini.

“They will be back in full training next week, but Barzagli won’t be able to play against Frosinone yet. We are almost all available, except for Juan Cuadrado.

“Tomorrow we could play Mattia De Sciglio with Martin Caceres, Daniele Rugani and Alex Sandro, with Joao Cancelo a good option off the bench.

“As for the midfield, Sami Khedira can start if Federico Bernardeschi does too. If Dybala plays, then it’s Rodrigo Bentancur or Emre Can.”

Sassuolo have already shown they stand up to the big clubs and have a very attack-minded style of football under Roberto De Zerbi.

“He is a young Coach and has improved a lot in recent years, but always ensures his team plays good football. He is one of the most promising young tacticians out there and has found the environment where he can grow, as Sassuolo can put his ideas into practice.

“The Neroverdi have enthusiasm, no pressure to get a result, so we have to put in a strong performance, above all in defence. I wanted us to improve our creativity, now we need to defend better. Once we sort all those elements out and keep them balanced, we can be ready for a great end to the season.”

Juve have come under fire recently for some sluggish performances, as they were knocked out of the Coppa Italia by a 3-0 Atalanta demolition job, scraping a 2-1 win at Lazio and drawing 3-3 with Parma.

“People seem to believe Juve have to beat everyone 3-0 without ever conceding. We have 60 points, the best defensive record in the league and drew one game because of some individual errors. The centre-backs were crucified, but the game was very entertaining with a thousand shots, hitting the woodwork and saves, all entertaining until we were held to a draw.

“The thing we need to focus on is winning the Scudetto, because that is absolutely not done. I don’t want us losing sight of the main objective, as there is time to think about the Champions League.”

This has been a tense week, not just because of recent results and the Paulo Dybala incident, but also Douglas Costa crashing his car.

“It’s a strange situation with Douglas Costa. He started the season very well, then did that stupid thing against Sassuolo (spitting at a player, ndr) and got a four-match ban, then was injured, got back in shape and on Sunday had a knock.

“As for Monday, that was his private life. These are young lads and I always tell them that they have to look after themselves, both on and off the field. They’ve got time to have fun and it’s only right they do so, but must also be responsible.

“Fortunately, there was nothing serious to him or the person in the car he crashed into. We are at an important stage of the season, so we need everyone in top shape both physically and mentally.”

Juventus again drop Paulo Dybala for Federico Bernardeschi, Mario Mandzukic and Cristiano Ronaldo against Domenico Berardi’s Sassuolo.

It kicks off at the Mapei Stadio in Reggio-Emilia at 17.00 GMT - 18.00 CET.

The Bianconeri have the opportunity to go 11 points clear at the top of the table, as Napoli were held to a 0-0 draw by Fiorentina on Saturday.

However, the Bianconeri have gone off the boil lately, scraping past Lazio, crashing out of the Coppa Italia with a 3-0 loss to Atalanta and fumbling a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Parma last week.

Dybala is again dropped, as he had to apologise to Max Allegri for storming off during the final minutes of the Parma game when he realised he wouldn’t be introduced as a substitute.

La Joya is replaced this time by Federico Bernardeschi, completing the trident attack in a 4-3-3 with Mandzukic and Capocannoniere Cristiano Ronaldo.

There is still a lengthy injury list, missing Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Douglas Costa and Juan Cuadrado, with Andrea Barzagli only fit for the bench after a long lay-off, so Martin Caceres again plays with Mattia De Sciglio at right-back.

Sassuolo have midfield enforcer Alfred Duncan suspended, while Marlon is on the treatment table.

Berardi as always leads the trident attack, this time with Domenico Berardi and Filip Djuricic, while Francesco Magnanelli is still not fully fit, so the midfield has Manuel Locatelli and Stefano Sensi.

It’s a special game for ex-Juventus players Rogerio and Pol Lirola.

Sassuolo: Consigli; Lirola, Magnani, Peluso, Rogerio; Bourabia, Sensi, Locatelli; Berardi, Babacar, Djuricic

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Caceres, Rugani, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Bernardeschi, Mandzukic, Cristiano Ronaldo

HT 0-1: Juve thank Khedira and Szcesny

Wojciech Szczesny rescued Juventus twice in the opening minutes, but Sami Khedira still gave them the half-time lead away to Sassuolo.

Paulo Dybala was again dropped to the bench, while Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Douglas Costa and Juan Cuadrado were injured, with Andrea Barzagli back in the squad after a long lay-off. The Neroverdi had Alfred Duncan suspended, Marlon injured and Francesco Magnani not fully fit.

Within 65 seconds, the hosts had almost scored on a classic counter-attack, Stefano Sensi firing just wide. Moments later, Daniele Rugani was caught in possession on a poor Miralem Pjanic back-pass and Filip Djuricic sprinted into the box, with Wojciech Szczesny having to time his interception perfectly to push the ball off his foot. A VAR viewing confirmed the goalkeeper got it spot-on to save his team from a nightmare start.

Szczesny again flew to palm a Manuel Locatelli scorcher out of the near top corner, as Juve simply weren’t in the game.

Nonetheless, the Bianconeri took the lead against the run of play with their first real chance. Cristiano Ronaldo’s powerful snapshot stung Andrea Consigli’s gloves and Sami Khedira turned in the rebound.

A spectacular Domenico Berardi volley from 25 metres out flew just over the bar, but that goal took the wind out of Sassuolo’s sails after a fantastic start.

On the stroke of half-time, it was almost 2-0, as Consigli parried a Federico Bernardeschi screamer and as the move continued Khedira’s glancing header whistled inches wide.

FT 0-3: Clinical Juve conquer Sassuolo

Sassuolo were left to rue wasted opportunities, as clinical Juventus emerged 3-0 winners with Sami Khedira, Cristiano Ronaldo and Emre Can.

This result allows the reigning champions to go 11 points clear of Napoli at the top of the table.

Rugani turned his header off target from a Mattia De Sciglio cross, while Cristiano Ronaldo did have the ball in the net from a tight angle after running around Consigli, but was marginally offside on the Bernardeschi through ball.

Sassuolo should’ve been level on 54 minutes when Szczesny was caught in no man’s land as he rushed out to scuff a long ball, but Berardi fired wide of the open goal.

Mandzukic’s cross flashed across the six-yard box with neither Khedira nor Bernardeschi able to get the finish, while De Sciglio’s angled drive whistled inches wide on a Mandzukic knock-down.

Cristiano Ronaldo got his 18th Serie A goal of the season from a Pjanic corner, as he started his run a long way back and surprised Consigli with the header. CR7 celebrated by dedicating it to Dybala on the touchline with his ‘mask’ gesture.

Emre Can came off the bench and scored with his first touch, as Juve concluded a rugby-style move from right to left with Ronaldo’s assist for the substitute’s left-foot angled drive at the back post.

Sassuolo: Consigli; Lirola, Magnani, Peluso, Rogerio; Bourabia (Magnanelli 78), Sensi, Locatelli; Berardi, Babacar (Boga 58), Djuricic (Matri 55)

Allegri explains Juventus choices

Max Allegri admits Juventus had to thank Wojciech Szczesny in the win at Sassuolo, while explaining his tactical decisions, including Paulo Dybala.

It was a shaky start with a few big risks, but Juve got the 3-0 victory with Sami Khedira, Cristiano Ronaldo and Emre Can goals.

“Sassuolo pass the ball around through the midfield a lot and have more possession in those areas than any other Serie A team,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

“We started with a misplaced pass and Szczesny made an extraordinary save, which could’ve easily been a penalty. We started playing eventually and put Federico Bernardeschi on Stefano Sensi to cut off their passing channels.”

Dybala was again on the bench and came on for the final seven minutes.

“I compliment the team for a clean sheet, which is very important. We’re in good shape. Ronaldo and Dybala can certainly play together and they will do, but we need everyone to work hard in order to keep the team balanced.

“It all depends on who you are playing against. If the opponents are really clammed up, you need to pass around them. If they leave gaps, you pass between the lines. Sassuolo have a strong midfield, so I had to balance my team that way today.

“Players are disappointed, but every now and then sitting on the bench is necessary to recharge the batteries and rediscover the right mental toughness.

“Different players have different characteristics. Dybala is playing the same role as he did last year and the year before. It’s just having Ronaldo, who is more of a striker, we need someone to find the space. We still need bodies in the box. I got angry in Bergamo because we kept giving the ball to poor Blaise Matuidi, who was the only one following the moves.

“You can play Dybala and Ronaldo, it just depends on the situations. Ronaldo played with Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale, so it’s not like they’re insane at Real Madrid.

“Everyone needs the right partner. Mario Mandzukic is very helpful for Dybala and for Ronaldo. Miralem Pjanic needs a Matuidi who does the running for him.”

Atletico Madrid could be without defender Lucas Hernandez for the Champions League clash with Juventus after a knee injury.

The first leg of the Round of 16 is to be played on February 20 in Spain, with the return in Turin on March 12.

A statement from Atleti confirmed Lucas Hernandez underwent tests today that showed a strain to ligaments in the right knee.

It is not yet clear how long he’ll be out for, but it is a blow so close to the Champions League showdown.

Dybala breaks drought and Frosinone

DzefkfPW0AAFiNY.jpg

Feb 15, 2019

Paulo Dybala’s scorcher ended his drought and opened the floodgates for Leonardo Bonucci and Cristiano Ronaldo, as Juventus beat Frosinone 3-0.

The Bianconeri had Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini back from injury, but Alex Sandro was suspended with Douglas Costa and Juan Cuadrado injured. The Canarini were fresh off a shock 1-0 win away to Sampdoria and had won two of their last three games, but made the trip without Federico Dionisi, Paolo Ghiglione and Stefan Simic.

Dybala had been dropped for two games and hadn’t scored since November 3, but celebrated returning to the starting XI with a sensational goal just six minutes in. He gathered from Cristiano Ronaldo around 19 metres out and unleashed a left-foot scorcher right into the near top corner.

Last time out, Ronaldo had combined his own jump celebration with the DybalaMask and so here the Argentine returned the favour.

Federico Viviani’s volley was charged down by Emre Can and Ronaldo’s rapid counter was intercepted at the final ball. Juve doubled their lead from a corner, as Marco Sportiello performed a great reaction save to deny Mario Mandzukic’s diving header, but Bonucci at full stretch prodded in the rebound before Sami Khedira could get there.

Frosinone hit back with a splendid Camillo Ciano free kick that skimmed the far top corner, while Joao Cancelo’s volley flashed across the face of goal and between Marco Capuano’s legs.

Mandzukic needed treatment on his right wrist after falling awkwardly on to Edoardo Goldaniga, seemingly scratching his arm with the defender’s studs.

On the stroke of half-time, another even better Ciano free kick flew over the bar, dipped viciously and shaved a coat of paint off the top corner with Wojciech Szczesny well beaten.

Joao Cancelo’s cross took a decisive deflection to prevent Ronaldo tapping in, then Edoardo Goldaniga’s very risky tackle stopped the Ballon d’Or winner as he was pulling the trigger inside the box.

Ronaldo did get his goal eventually at the end of a well-worked team goal full of one-touch football. Cancelo’s through ball was knocked down by Rodrigo Bentancur for the Mandzukic first time pull-back and Ronaldo strike from 12 yards. That was his last contribution, as he was given a well-earned rest ahead of Atletico Madrid. It was his third Serie A appearance in a row where he provided both a goal and assist.

Sportiello was alert to punch a fantastic Cancelo trivela-style cross off the head of Emre Can, then was almost propelled back into his own goal by a ferocious Federico Bernardeschi free kick.

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Bonucci, Chiellini (Caceres 70), Cancelo; Khedira (Pjanic 80), Emre Can, Bentancur; Dybala, Mandzukic, Ronaldo (Bernardeschi 63)

Frosinone: Sportiello; Goldaniga, Salamon, Capuano; Zampano (Paganini 83), Chibsah (Gori 78), Viviani, Cassata, Molinaro; Ciano, Ciofani (Pinamonti 57)

Allegri: 'Goal in Madrid is crucial'

https://www.football-italia.net/134721/allegri-goal-madrid-crucial

Feb 15, 2019

Max Allegri congratulated Paulo Dybala on the goal against Frosinone, warned it’s “crucial” to score in Madrid and discussed Mauro Icardi links with Juventus.

“The team is growing in terms of fitness. Aside from the hiccup against Parma, we have done well in Serie A, we’ve shaken off the problems caused by the Winter break and are in good shape for the Champions League,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

Dybala, Leonardo Bonucci and Cristiano Ronaldo were on target in the 3-0 victory, which saw Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini return from injury lay-offs.

“When there are players returning from injuries, I think it’s good to put them in from the start and let them loose.”

Dybala opened the scoring with a scorcher on his first start since the touchline row and he hadn’t scored in Serie A since November.

“I am happy for Paulo, as strikers live to score goals. Juventus need a player who works between the lines and Dybala is very good at that.

“The only issue is that for a few years we had one forward and now we have two. It means the build-up play is a little different, so there aren’t as many spaces to run into, but I watched Dybala make the right moves and passes, he just wasn’t scoring as many goals.”

Juve tried not to rest stars tonight, using it as a dress rehearsal for Wednesday’s Champions League Round of 16 trip to Atletico Madrid.

“The game against Atletico Madrid will be very different, we must be warier and find the right moment to score. It’s crucial that we get a goal there, otherwise qualification would be rather difficult to achieve.

“A lot depends on who is the right-back and therefore who is the mezz’ala. Douglas Costa will also join the squad next week after his injury. It’s going to be a very physical game against Atletico Madrid.”

Allegri was asked about director Fabio Paratici’s confession that Juventus tried to sign Icardi, who is currently frozen out at Inter.

“Icardi is a centre-forward who scores goals. He is young, has a long road ahead of him, but I always say in order to really evaluate a player, you need to train him. Talent scouts see them a different way to a Coach.”

New Cancelo role against Atletico Madrid

Feb 17, 2019

There are increasing reports Juventus will move Joao Cancelo into the trident attack, replacing Paulo Dybala, against Atletico Madrid.

The first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 is at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday evening.

Tuttosport and TuttoJuve are now backing the rumours that Max Allegri will shift full-back Cancelo to the right side of the trident attack.

He would flank Mario Mandzukic and Cristiano Ronaldo, sending Dybala and Federico Bernardeschi to the bench.

Having Cancelo in that more advanced role would allow him to focus more on attacking, but be able to help out with defending when needed.

It is not an entirely new position for the Portugal international, as he played there four times for Valencia in 2016-17.

Mattia De Sciglio would instead join the defence with Alex Sandro at left-back.

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Bonucci, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic, Matuidi; Cancelo, Mandzukic, Ronaldo

Alex Sandro wary of Atleti threat

Alex Sandro has warned Juventus that Atletico Madrid ‘are used to playing games like these and going far in competitions.’

Juve kick off their Champions League last-16 with Atleti on Wednesday, and the left-back was under no illusions as to the threat posed by Diego Simeone’s side, who won the Europa League last season and reached two Champions League Finals in 2014 and 2016.

“We’re reaching the final few months of the season, so we have to stay very focused,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“European games are always different to those in the League. Difficult draw? It would’ve been difficult against any team.

“Atletico are used to playing games like these and going far in competitions. They have good players in every position.

“Both teams will go out on the pitch to win, so it’ll certainly be a great match for those who play and help out.”

'Atleti more Italian than Spanish'

Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini feels Atletico Madrid are ‘more Italian than Spanish’ in their approach and that Sergio Ramos is the best defender in the world.

Atleti have become renowned for their siege mentalty under Diego Simeone, and Chiellini agrees they come across as more of a Serie A side.

“I think Atletico Madrid are more Italian than Spanish,” the Juve stalwart told Marca ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg at Wanda Metropolitano.

“In terms of mentality and approach to games, they’re closer to our football.

“Simeone is ready to line up four midfielders to stop Juventus: Rodrigo, Thomas, Saul and Koke.

“I hope to return to this stadium for the Final on June 1.“

Finally, the 34-year-old was asked if he was the world’s best stopper on current form...

“No, I think it’s Sergio Ramos,” he concluded.

Juventus have confirmed that they will face Atletico Madrid without Douglas Costa and Sami Khedira, who has been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat.

A medical report on Juve’s official website confirmed Costa was still recovering from a hamstring injury, while Khedira would be subjected to an EP test and eventual treatment of ‘atrial arrhythmia’.

The pair join Juan Cuadrado on the treatment as the Bianconeri are otherwise full-strength for their Champions League last-16 first leg at Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday.

Juve squad to face Atleti: Szczesny, Perin, Pinsoglio; De Sciglio, Chiellini, Caceres, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Bonucci, Cancelo; Pjanic, Matuidi, Emre Can, Bentancur; Ronaldo, Dybala, Mandzukic, Kean, Bernardeschi

Morata: I still support Juve

Atletico, Morata avverte la Juve: «Se segno al Wanda esulto»

https://www.football-italia.net/134893/morata-i-still-support-juve

Feb 20, 2019

Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata admits Juventus are still ‘my team in Italy’ and doubts he would celebrate against them in Turin.

Morata scored 27 goals in 93 appearances for Juve between 2014 and 2016, winning two Scudetti and reaching a Champions League Final, before beating the Bianconeri with Real Madrid at the same stage two years later.

“We’re second in La Liga, fighting for the title, and now comes the game against Juventus, where everything stops,” the Atleti new boy told AS ahead of Wednesday’s last-16 first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano.

“This is the Champions League, and it’s our moment to show what we want. They’re a great team, but we’ll fight to the death.

“I don’t have to give anyone advice. I’ve come here to add to the work done over the years.

“I know that winning the Champions League doesn’t mean the same thing here than it does at other places.

“I won’t explain what winning the Champions League would mean to Atletico, but first we have to beat Juventus, who are a great team.

“We’re only thinking about having a great game. We know it’s complicated to play at our stadium

“I couldn’t not celebrate my first goal for Atletico [against Juve]. Maybe I wouldn’t [in Turin] out of respect, but my first goal in this shirt would mean a lot to me.

“I couldn’t stand and ask for forgiveness. It’s true I want to respect the Juventus fans as much as possible, given they’re my team in Italy, and that I want them to always win, just not against us.

“I think the Juventus fans would understand if I celebrated in Madrid, just as the Atleti fans would if I didn’t in Turin.

“Juve have Ronaldo, yes, but they also reached the Final without him. They’re a very competitive team and it’ll be very difficult to beat them, but we’re Atlético and we’ll do everything to make it difficult for them and win the tie.

“I never had any problems with him.  Maybe we understand some things differently, but I had no problem with him.

“I hope he doesn’t have his day. Sometimes I’d talk to him about things outside of football. He’s a good person and there are no problems between us.

“I can understand why Juve are favourites, given they’re a great team. It’s a responsibility for them.

“We’re aware of who they are and, I believe, vice versa. The Juventus players weren’t very happy when they got us in the draw.

“I know them and they know what’s in store. They respect us and we respect them too.”

Bonucci warned Morata would be given ‘a piece of him’ on Wednesday…

“I hope he does. If [Juve’s defenders] don’t kick me, it would be a good thing for them,” he explained.

“First I have to be on the field and then they can kick me as much as they want.  If they do that, it’d be a good sign.”

Juventus start Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic together in the Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid, who look to Diego Costa.

The first leg in the Round of 16 kicks off at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium at 20.00 GMT - 21.00 CET.

The Bianconeri have made it clear with the arrival of CR7 this summer at a cost of €100m that their primary objective is to win the Champions League for the first time since 1996.

Max Allegri has to maintain a balance in this away match between getting goals and avoiding potential counter-attacks.

Sami Khedira had been all set to start, but is out for around a month after heart surgery, while Douglas Costa is injured.

Instead, Rodrigo Bentancur completes the midfield with Blaise Matuidi and Miralem Pjanic.

While Pjanic has been suffering from flu symptoms today, he is determined to get out there and start the match.

There had been reports Joao Cancelo would be used on the right side of the trident attack, but Dybala is chosen in that role after his impressive performance and goal in the 3-0 victory over Frosinone last week.

Mattia De Sciglio is at right-back instead for a more defensive-minded option than Cancelo.

Atletico Madrid are without World Cup winner Lucas Hernandez at left-back, so Filipe Luis gets the nod, with Juanfran rather than Arias on the right.

Antoine Griezmann is partnered by Costa, as former Juventus, Real Madrid and Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata, who made the move from Stamford Bridge in January, is on the bench.

Diego Costa and ex-Milan forward Nikola Kalinic are ready to come off the bench, but Koke returns to the starting XI and it’s an early Serie A test for Diego Godin, who is expected to join Inter as a free agent next season.

Atleti have a remarkable Champions League record under Diego Simeone, as they have never lost a home knockout match, picking up seven wins and four draws.

However, their recent form has not been good, losing two on the trot to Real Betis and Real Madrid before Saturday’s 1-0 victory away to Rayo Vallecano.

This stadium will also host the Champions League Final on June 1.

These teams have met only once before in the Champions League group stage, as Juve lost in Madrid 1-0 in October 2014 to an Arda Turan goal and were held to a 0-0 home draw in December that year.

That means the Bianconeri are still looking for their first goal against the Colchoneros.

The second leg will be at the Allianz Juventus Stadium on March 12.

Atletico Madrid: Oblak; Juanfran, Gimenez, Godin, Filipe Luis; Saul Niguez, Thomas, Rodri, Koke; Costa, Griezmann

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Bonucci, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Bentancur, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala, Mandzukic, Ronaldo
