Juventus captain Danilo edging closer to return from injury After sustaining an injury on international duty, Juventus captain Danilo had to skip the club’s last two fixtures against Milan and Hellas Verona. Luckily for the Bianconeri, Daniele Rugani stepped up to the plate and delivered solid displays at the back. Federico Gatti and Gleison Bremer have also produced the goods to make sure that the club maintains its strength at the back despite the notable absence of its leader. ............ Danilo will make his return to action next weekend against Fiorentina. Max Allegri’s men travel to Florence to take on Vincenzo Italiano’s team at the Artemio Franchi Stadium. However, the report doesn’t specify whether or not the Brazil international will contend for a starting berth or make a gradual return beginning with a spot on the bench. ............ Kean Top, Vlahovic Flop: Italian newspapers ratings for Juventus vs Verona This weekend, Juventus kept their winning streak intact thanks to Andrea Cambiaso who came off the bench to deliver a last-minute winner against Hellas Verona. The Bianconeri dominated the action at the Allianz Stadium. For his part, Moise Kean scored two goals that were harshly disallowed by VAR. The first was a fabulous solo effort, but the semi-automated offside technology deemed him to be in an offside position, albeit by a few centimeters. On the second occasion, the video assistant picked up a doubtful foul on Marco Faraoni in the buildup. In any case, the main Italian newspapers handed the former Everton striker relatively high notes – mostly 7/10 – for his efforts. ............ Giuntoli’s longtime right-hand man to replace Tognozzi at Juventus Earlier this week, Juventus announced the departure of the club’s Chief Scout Matteo Tognozzi. The Italian will join Granada, assuming the role of sporting director at the Spanish club. Nevertheless, Juventus Director of Football Cristiano Giuntoli remains unfazed, as he already has a name in mind to replace the departing Chief Scout. The Bianconeri will turn to Giuseppe Pompilio who acted as Giuntoli’s right-hand man at Capri and Napoli. ............ Allegri: Key for Juventus is to play in an organised fashion Coach’s comments after a late, late winner seals all three points Juventus left it very, very late on Saturday against Hellas Verona, getting an Andrea Cambiaso winner in the last minute of six added on at the end of the game. It was starting to look like it wasn’t the Bianconeri’s night with two Moise Kean goals chalked off by VAR and a number of other close chances missed. Speaking after the game, coach Massimiliano Allegri said - Kean was pretty unhappy with the two decisions going against him and got booked as well, but was subsequently very disappointed to be replaced by Federico Chiesa. “My happiest yellow card” Cambiaso delighted after scoring Juventus winner Andrea Cambiaso has jokingly expressed his delight at receiving a yellow card for celebrating his late goal for Juventus against Verona last night. The wing-back came to the rescue after Juve had struggled to find a goal throughout the match. ............ “This is a very important goal, I am so happy. This means a lot, we are top of the table and will enjoy it for a few hours at least. “It was also my happiest yellow card, it was well worth it!” ............ Juve’s luck finally holds in final seconds against Verona A game that would have been comfortable with competent officiating looked to be lost points until a last-ditch winner. Saturday night’s game between Juventus and Hellas Verona should not have ended on a last-gasp scramble in front of the visitors’ goal. Juventus should have been one or two goals to the good by the hour mark, were it not for refereeing decisions that were frankly incompetent. Moise Kean was cheated out of two goals, one by the dogmatism of an offside rule that needs changing in the worst way, one by a bit of playacting that took in both the referee and the VAR official. Those game-changing calls left Verona with the opportunity to scamper out of the Allianz Stadium with a point that they absolutely didn’t deserve. But after 97 minutes of frustration, on virtually the last kick of the game, Juve’s luck finally held. Fabio Miretti spotted Federico Gatti standing unmarked on the other side of the field and switched it to him. The center-back sent a peach of a cross to the back post for Arkadiusz Milik, who headed it back across goal. It looked for a second like yet another agonizing miss as the Pole’s shot bounced off the inside of the post, but Lorenzo Montipò and Pawel Dawidowicz both failed to clear the ball, and Andrea Cambiaso jammed the ball into the back of the net, setting the team and the crowd into a frenzy. One last desperate move forward by Verona fizzled quickly, confirming a 1-0 victory that should have been a lot more. ........ Massimiliano Allegri trotted out the usual 3-5-2 formation, with Wojciech Szczesny in goal, protected by Gatti, Bremer, and Daniele Rugani. Timothy Weah and Filip Kostic started as wing-backs, around the midfield of Weston McKennie, Manuel Locatelli, and Adrien Rabiot. Kean and Dusan Vlahovic paired up up front. ........ Juve had already been knocking on the door when the first of Kean’s run-ins with VAR happened in the 13th minute. The Italy international retreated deep to receive a pass from Bremer, made a pair of defenders look foolish dribbling past them, and unleashed a shot from 23 yards heading toward the near post. The ball deflected off Vlahovic before zipping into the net, just inside the post. Kean celebrated the goal, but soon referee Ermanno Feliciani signaled that VAR had signaled that he was offside, much to Kean’s disbelief. That disbelief soon spread to full-on contempt for fans watching at home when the semi-automated offside image came up and displayed what had been detected: Kean had been offside by approximately two cleats on his heel when he was running back to receive Bremer’s pass. It was yet another regrettable instance of a millimeter offside call chalking off a goal despite the attacking player in no way ending up with an advantage. ........ Allegri made a shift at the half, sending on Miretti for Weah and pushing McKennie out wide. Kean continued to be the focal point of the attack, missing a free header just wide three minutes after the restart. Less than a minute later Montipò had to palm the ball around the post (a shot that officially was referred to as a miss because Feliciani somehow missed that the keeper had touched it and gave a goal kick. A few minutes later Kean thought he finally had his first goal this season when he made a fantastic run through the middle of the box to steal in front of Magnani and skip a header past Montipò. It was an excellent passage of play all around, so it was a real surprise when Feliciani suddenly signaled for a VAR review. That review centered around the very start of the sequence, when Kean had won the ball off Faraoni. Kean’s arm during the 50/50 challenge had brushed Faraoni’s face, who went down like he’d been shot and stayed there for a minute trying to milk a call. When that didn’t work, he pulled himself up to his hands and knees to watch the play develop, and the instant Kean scored he decided his face hurt again and he immediately began rolling around again. It was playacting worthy of Sergio Busquets, and worse, it completely duped both VAR official Luigi Nasca and Feliciani, who disallowed the goal upon his return to the field. It was an utterly incompetent moment on the part of both men, and it left Kean stinging to the point where he went off on the ref a few minutes later when it was ruled that Kostic didn’t keep the ball in along the sideline. The booking that followed likely ended his night, as at the hour mark Allegri brought him off for Federico Chiesa, as much to avoid a second frustration yellow as anything else. ........ Juve should’ve had a penalty in the late stages of the game when Chiesa was bowled over in the box, only for Feliciani to deem being dragged to the ground somehow fair play. ........ All seemed lost at that point, but Juve had one more push left for Cambiaso to do something special. LE PAGELLE WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 7. Only needed to make one save, but it was a solid one. ........ FEDERICO GATTI - 6.5. Did well shutting down anything that came his way and provided the key pass for what turned into the winner. BREMER - 7. Another pretty excellent day from the Brazilian ........ DANIELE RUGANI - 6. ........ TIMOTHY WEAH - 5.5. ........ WESTON McKENNIE - 6. ........ MANUEL LOCATELLI - 6. Completed eight of 11 long balls and recorded two key passes. More than any other game in recent memory started sending some incisive balls through the defense to break the lines. ADRIEN RABIOT - 6. ........ FILIP KOSTIC - 6. ........ MOISE KEAN - 6.5. Made all the right runs, did all the right things, and had absolutely none of the luck. In a just world neither of the goals he scored would’ve been disallowed. If he keeps going like this, the stats will come. DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 6. Still shaking off some rust from his injury layoff, but looked lively for the most part and just lacked the killer edge we saw at the beginning of the season, but if he keeps it up he’ll find it again. SUBS FABIO MIRETTI - 6. ........ FEDERICO CHIESA - 6. ........ ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6.5. Much more unpredictable than Kostic, he was often much further inside to give Chiesa some room to operate out wide. He had two key passes and, of course, was Johnny on the spot for the winner. ARKADIUSZ MILIK - NR. ........ KENAN YILDIZ - NR. ........ MANAGER ANALYSIS Yeah ... not much to say here. I was frankly a little surprised — pleasantly so — that the team didn’t drop back and play on the counter, because Allegri has shown his preference for doing that even against teams like this over the last two years. ........ That they scored the winner the way they did is probably a byproduct of that, as they had the confidence to keep moving forward even after the disappointments of Kean’s disallowed goals. Speaking of Kean, it was the right move to take him off, because by that point he was so frustrated he was going to get himself a red card. If there was one thing I really quibble about, it’s the fact that once again Samuel Iling-Junior was left sitting on the bench in a situation where Juventus was chasing the game. Iling is one of the best attacking talents on this roster, and while Cambiaso played well and obviously scored the goal, to not put on such a gifted attacker when a goal is needed seems like a strange way to go about things. The man’s only played 89 minutes this year — and still has an assist to his name in that time. Let the kid out, Max. LOOKING AHEAD Next week is a big game as Juve head to an always hostile Stadio Artemio Franchi to face a Fiorentina team that is pushing its way into the top four race. After that the team comes home to face Cagliari. Juventus 1 - Hellas Verona 0: Initial reaction and random observations Never in doubt, right? The moment when second-late substitute Kenan Yildiz saw his glorious scoring opportunity go flying over the crossbar and he subsequently dropped to his knees in agony, what went through your head? Was it that sinking feeling that this was proving to be one of those nights where Juventus deserved to win but had about the opposite amount of luck that they had at the San Siro six days earlier? It’s OK to be honest. You’re not alone here, people. I was thinking it. I couldn’t help but think it after seeing two would-be Moise Kean goals get waved off by VAR and Juve’s shot count fly past 20 ... 22 ... 25 ... and close in on 30 without anything to actually show for it on the scoreboard. But that 30th and final shot of the night deeeeeeeeeeep into stoppage time, in a complete mess inside of the Hellas Verona 6-yard box, was the one that decided it. For the second straight weekend coming out of the October international break, Juventus recorded a 1-0 win. This one, though, came in a completely different kind of manner as the trip to San Siro was, as Andrea Cambiaso’s 97th-minute (!!) goal with bodies scattered throughout the penalty area gave Juve another slim win but a vastly important one that sends Max Allegri’s squad top of the table, even if it’s just for 24 hours or so. A hectic night that involved more frustration with VAR and a whole lot of moments to forget in front of goal ended with a player who wasn’t even on the roster the last time Juve played Hellas Verona scoring his first-ever goal in Juve colors in one hell of a fashion. .............. Top of the list had to be the VAR calls, which cost Moise Kean his first two goals of the season even though neither of the calls made sense when you consider how they came about. (And then you look at how Davide Faraoni acted after being “fouled” by Kean in the build-up to the second goal that was called off and you just know how much of a horrible call it was after the fact.) For everything that Juventus created — and, when you finish with 30 shots attempted, that’s certainly a lot — there’s simply no reason as to why it took until basically the final moments of stoppage time to win this. Then again, that sometimes happens — especially with this team because even on days in which they take a ton of shots, they don’t really prove to be the most clinical of teams. Proof for it is as follows: 30 shots attempted Six shots on target One goal scored 3.40 xG That’s not exactly the kind of showing in the final third in which you want to brag about. But sometimes when you have two goals called off by VAR that shouldn’t have been called off by VAR, then things are going to end up being rather interesting. .............. RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS I got a text from an unnamed Juventus friend in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time about how Andrea Cambiaso hadn’t done much since coming on. Less than two minutes later, Cambiaso scored the game-winning goal. Reverse jinx, baby! The fact that the back half of Moise Kean’s heel was “offside” and that they ruled that he gained an advantage because of it just shows you how it was technically the right call by the letter of the law but it’s another instance that there’s so much need for a little wiggle room from referees and VAR. Did Kean score the goal because he heel was literally centimeters ahead of the defender? No, he scored because it was a great individual effort after he got the ball under control. .............. That referee, by the way, was a complete joke. But then again, this is Italy, so it’s pretty much par for the course unfortunately. Juventus had 65% possession through the first 20 minutes and I wasn’t sure what I was watching for a second. .............. Vlahovic touched the ball 15 times in the first half. Szczesny touched the ball 13 times in the first half. .............. After three-year wait, Juventus back on top of Serie A Embattled Juventus are on top of Serie A for the first time in more than three years. Substitute Andrea Cambiaso scored seven minutes into stoppage time to earn the 36-time Italian champions a 1-0 win over Hellas Verona in Turin on Saturday. Having dominated throughout, Juventus finally found the target when Cambiaso knocked the ball in from close range after an effort from Arkadiusz Milik came back off the post. Juventus, who won nine straight titles between 2012 and 2020, were most recently top of the pile on August 1, 2020 - 1183 days and nearly 125 matches ago. "These are three important points that add continuity after the game in Milan," Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said, referring to his side's 1-0 win at AC Milan last weekend. .............. “Till the end” Marchisio reacts to Juventus win against Verona Former Juventus player Claudio Marchisio has reacted to the Bianconeri’s victory against Verona tonight, thanks to a late goal by Andrea Cambiaso that earned them the win. ............... Juve struggled to score the first goal, and it didn’t come, with at least two strikes ruled out by VAR. It appeared that Verona might achieve the unexpected and secure a point at the Allianz Stadium. Nevertheless, Juve was determined to win and was not willing to settle for anything other than a victory in the match. This meant they had to keep working hard and searching for the elusive goal until the end of the game. Finally, Cambiaso scored in the seventh minute of added time, and the Bianconeri will go to bed atop the Serie A league standings for the first time in several months. After the game, Marchisio posted an image of Cambiaso celebrating and captioned it: “Till the end.” ............... Juventus Player Ratings vs. Verona: Kean robbed of signature game, Bremer brilliant Although the score at full-time said 1-0, Juventus thoroughly destroyed Hellas Verona in every phase of play. They just couldn’t find the right finish, even though striker Moise Kean had two more goals against the Gialloblù on paper; it’s just that both were ruled out by VAR in controversial fashion. Despite the heartbreak and the nail-biting drama, Juve were able to pull all three points at the Allianz Stadium, thanks to a literal last-minute goal from young substitute Andrea Cambiaso. ............. GK Wojciech Szczęsny, 6.0 – ............. CB Daniele Rugani, 6.0 – ............. CB Bremer, 8.0 – Yes, it was an easy assignment, but Bremer was still majestic at the back. It wasn’t just about his ability to read the game perfectly off the ball and mark Verona’s entire attack out of the match. The Brazilian center back keeps taking on more responsibility on the ball to attempt more difficult passes and not get discouraged when a gamble doesn’t pay off. CB Federico Gatti, 6.5 – Clumsy at times, but you always have to admire his effort. Gatti is an asset to Juventus, and he nearly scored a blistering goal from distance in this one. Midfield LM Filip Kostić, 6.0 – ............. CM Adrien Rabiot, 6.5 – ............. DM Manuel Locatelli, 7.0 – His passing accuracy on those long pick-outs is a wonder to behold and perhaps only surpassed by Toni Kroos. Locatelli had a couple of world-class moments with his awareness of finding the “hidden” option in the attacking third. You wonder what he’d be capable of if Max Allegri did a little more with him. CM Weston McKennie, 6.5 – A solid performance from the American, who was unlucky not to have an assist with his pinpoint cross to Kean. He covers a lot of ground for the Bianconeri. RM Timothy Weah, 6.0 – ............. CM Fabio Miretti, 7.0 – ............. Forwards ST Moise Kean, 8.0 – One of the unluckiest performances we have ever seen. Moise Kean was denied a sensational opening solo goal from range by the offside decision from VAR, as the very tip of his cleat was offside. It was the most minuscule decision, especially since Kean had his back to the goal; there was no advantage there. As if that weren’t bad enough, he had a second goal denied, which was a headed goal from a Weston McKennie cross that he set up with some strong work on the ball. However, Kean’s strong work was deemed a foul after a VAR check. Since he did not know anything about slightly hitting Verona captain Davide Faraoni, it was a harsh way to deny a goal. Kean was a bright spot throughout the match and was rightfully frustrated with how his night went. He should have had two. ST Dušan Vlahović, 5.0 – Had a couple of nice moments as a creator and even with his attempts on goal, but, by and large, this was another disappointing display from the star striker. Juventini have so much faith in the former Fiorentina man, but there are high expectations placed on his shoulders. ............. Juventus vs Hellas Verona 1-0: Cambiaso Scores At the Death Juventus left it late to beat a downtrodden Hellas Verona side at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday night. Andrea Cambiaso’s last-gasp winner has fired Bianconeri to the top of the Serie A standings, at least until tomorrow. .............. Winless in seven consecutive league matches ahead of this trip, Verona had only one idea on their minds. Marco Baroni’s lads were out to frustrate Juventus with a ‘bus’ in front of Lorenzo Montipo’s goal without any ambition to hurt Wojciech Szczesny on the opposite side of the pitch, especially in the first half. Moise Kean, who scored winning goals in both last season’s Serie A encounters between Juventus and Verona, was at the thick of every action before halftime. The Italian forward scored a brilliant solo goal in the 12th minute. He picked the ball midway through the visitors’ half and breezed past two Verona men before unleashing an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner. But his celebrations were short-lived as referee Ermano Feliciani disallowed the goal for the smallest offside you’ll see in Serie A this season. It wasn’t the end of the VAR drama tonight. Juventus continued to dominate the game but struggled to create many clear-cut chances. The next one came in the 19th minute. .............. Despite weathering the storm in the first half, Verona had a long 45 minutes ahead of them. Eight minutes into the second half, Juventus found the back of the net again through Kean. The 23-year-old headed home an inch-perfect cross from the flank, but VAR denied him his first goal of the campaign again for a four in the build-up. .............. Time-wasting techniques and rock-solid defending helped Verona endure the siege down the final stretch. Or so they thought! Late substitute Arkadiusz Mlik got his towering header on the end of Adrien Rabiot’s cross in the 96th minute. The ball rattled off the post and fell nicely for Cambiaso who tapped it home to give Juventus a well-deserved victory.
