Galatasaray vs Juventus: Preview and Prediction European nights in Istanbul rarely lack intensity, and Tuesday’s first-leg playoff promises exactly that. Galatasaray welcome an angry Juventus side to a stadium that has long been a fortress in continental competition, with both clubs eyeing a return to the UEFA Champions League Last 16. ............ Juventus, however, bring their own pedigree. They finished 13th in the league phase with 13 points, seven more than Galatasaray, and have reached the latter stages of Europe’s premier competition in ten of the last 12 seasons. Yet recent knockout history is less reassuring. The Bianconeri have lost five straight elimination ties since overcoming Atletico Madrid in 2019. Under Luciano Spalletti, Juventus have become harder to break down. Since his arrival in November, they have gone unbeaten in five matches and kept clean sheets in their last three prior to the weekend. Spalletti’s broader Champions League record is solid too, with ten wins in his last 16 top-level European games across spells in Italy. Still, inconsistency away from home remains a concern. Juventus collected just five points from four away fixtures in the league phase and have suffered domestic defeats in Cagliari, Bergamo, and Milan in recent weeks. Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 loss to Inter, in which they battled back after being reduced to ten men but ultimately fell short, underlined both their resilience and their fragility. Tactically, this could become a fascinating battle between Galatasaray’s aggressive, front-foot approach at home and Juventus’s more measured, defensively structured system. The hosts will look to impose tempo early, fuelled by the atmosphere, while Juve may prioritise control and compactness, mindful that this is only the first leg. Team News & Tactics Galatasaray ............ Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Cakir; Sallai, Bardakci, Sanchez, Jakobs; Torreira, Sara; Sane, Gundogan, Yilmaz; Osimhen Juventus Juventus travel to Istanbul with a relatively stable squad, though they remain without two recognised centre-forwards. Dusan Vlahovic and Arkadiusz Milik are both sidelined through injury, limiting Luciano Spalletti’s options in the number nine role. There are no suspension concerns for the Bianconeri ahead of this first leg. Encouragingly for Juventus, key midfielder Khephren Thuram is expected to recover from the bone bruise that ruled him out of the recent Derby d’Italia, strengthening the midfield depth available for selection. In the absence of Vlahovic, Jonathan David is poised to lead the line, with Lois Openda likely to begin on the bench. The Canadian forward’s movement and ability to stretch defensive lines make him a suitable fit for a system that prioritises structured build-up and controlled transitions. Supporting him will be Kenan Yildiz, who is expected to operate in an advanced role and carries particular motivation playing in Turkey. Yildiz has been one of Juventus’s most dynamic performers in this season’s Champions League, creating 12 chances and completing 16 successful dribbles in the competition so far. Juventus are expected to set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Michele Di Gregorio will start in goal. The defensive line should feature Pierre Kalulu at right-back, Gleison Bremer and Lloyd Kelly as the central defensive pairing, and Andrea Cambiaso occupying the left-back position. In midfield, Manuel Locatelli is likely to operate as the deeper-lying playmaker, partnered by Teun Koopmeiners in a central role tasked with linking defence and attack. Further forward, Francisco Conceicao is expected to start on the right wing, Weston McKennie will operate in the central attacking midfield role, and Kenan Yildiz will feature on the left flank. Jonathan David should lead the line as the lone striker, responsible for spearheading Juventus’ attacking efforts in this crucial European tie. Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Koopmeiners; Conceicao, McKennie, Yildiz; David Key Stats Galatasaray are playing their 200th European Cup match and have lost just once in their last 11 continental home fixtures. Galatasaray have scored in 17 of their last 18 European home games. Juventus have lost their last five Champions League knockout ties, failing to progress from any elimination round since 2019. The Bianconeri collected only five points from four away matches during this season’s league phase. Juventus have never won away to Galatasaray in the Champions League, failing to secure victory in any of their three previous visits to Istanbul. Player to Watch Kenan Yildiz All eyes will be on Kenan Yildiz as Juventus return to Istanbul. The young Turkish forward has quietly become one of the Bianconeri’s most influential attacking outlets in Europe this season, and playing on home soil adds an extra layer of narrative to his performance. Yildiz has already created 12 chances in this Champions League campaign while completing 16 successful dribbles, a reflection of both his creativity and directness. Comfortable operating from the left but capable of drifting centrally, he thrives in one-versus-one situations and is fearless when driving at defenders. Beyond the numbers, his intelligence between the lines makes him difficult to track. He often drops into pockets to link play before accelerating into space, a trait that could test Galatasaray’s defensive structure. In a tie that may be decided by moments rather than dominance, Yildiz has the profile of a player capable of producing something decisive. Prediction Galatasaray 1-1 Juventus This first leg feels finely balanced. Galatasaray’s intensity at home and their recent attacking rhythm make them dangerous, particularly with Victor Osimhen leading the line and the crowd driving every phase of play. Juventus, however, bring greater structural discipline and European experience, and Luciano Spalletti’s side have shown they can absorb pressure and remain compact in hostile environments. The tempo is likely to fluctuate, Galatasaray pushing early, Juve seeking control and transitions, but neither side will want to leave themselves exposed before the return leg in Turin. Expect moments of quality rather than sustained dominance. . Read more -> https://thehardtackle.com/round-up/2026/02/16/galatasaray-vs-juventus-preview-and-prediction/

Official: injured Canada star David ruled out of Juventus’ UCL game vs. Galatasaray Juventus striker Jonathan David has been ruled out of tomorrow’s Champions League match against Galatasaray due to a groin injury. ............ The ex-Lille forward is not part of the Bianconeri squad list released just a few minutes ago. According to Sky Sport Italia, David has been omitted due to a groin injury. David had been subbed off in the second half of an away game at Inter on Saturday in what appeared to be a tactical substitution. ............ David started in the last eight Serie A games for Juventus. ............ Tomorrow, February, Tuesday 17, Juventus visit Galatasaray in the first leg of the Champions League knockout play-off. . Kalulu’s ban can only be overturned in one case – Could Gravina replicate Lukaku’s case? After unfairly receiving his marching orders against Inter, Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu will be slapped with a one-match ban, unless the FIGC president personally intervenes. ............ To add insult to injury, Kalulu’s red card cannot be overturned, as the regulations do not allow video reviews for second bookings. Therefore, the sports judge is expected to confirm the French defender’s one-match ban on Tuesday, which will see him skip Saturday’s Serie A contest against Como. ............ Nevertheless, Gabriele Gravin, has the authority to grant a player a special pardon. ............ Gravina had last used this authority in 2023 to overturn Romelu Lukaku’s suspension. Ironically, this also stemmed from an unsavoury incident that occurred in the Derby d’Italia. At the time, Lukaku was an Inter player, and he received racial insults from a section of Juventus supporters while converting a spot-kick during a Coppa Italia semi-final tie. The match official then handed the Belgian striker a second booking for shushing the Bianconeri supporters during his celebration, so Gravina decided to grant the player this special pardon, allowing him to take part in the second leg against Juventus. ............ . Damien Comolli - Chief Executive Officer

Reports: Juventus CEO Damien Comolli risks two-month ban The Derby d’Italia fiasco could return to haunt Juventus CEO Damien Comolli, who now risks a lengthy ban for his part in the debacle. ............ Following the scandulous decision, Luciano Spalletti confronted the referee in the tunnel while heading to the locker room at the interval. The 66-year-old blamed La Penna for ‘ruining’ Juve’s match. However, footage then showed club officials, Comolli and Giorgio Chiellini, reprimanding the referee as well. ............ “You can’t do something like this, it doesn’t exist anywhere in the world,” an angry Chiellini was spotted saying to the referee. On the other hand, Comolli labelled the episode as a ‘f***ing disgrace’. ............ The reports explain that the FIGC inspectors were close to the action, so it remains to be seen if they had reported the incident to the prosecutor, who would then open an investigation and request a ban. Since he refrained from using foul language, Chiellini only risks a ‘soft’ punishment. On the other hand, Comolli’s ban could reach two months if convicted. ............ . De Rossi weighs in on Inter 3-2 Juventus controversy: ‘The stupidest VAR rule’ Genoa head coach Daniele De Rossi has had his say on the controversial decision to send off Pierre Kalulu during the Derby d’Italia between Inter and Juventus on Saturday evening, suggesting that the Frenchman fell victim to ‘the stupidest VAR rule’. ............ Refereeing designator Gianluca Rocchi has since admitted that a mistake was made, however, the decision was not able to be reviewed by VAR at the time as this was a second yellow card call and not a straight red. There have already been suggestions that the IFAB will look to change this rule in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer. ............ De Rossi has not hid his frustrations with referees in recent weeks. Last weekend, his Genoa side were beaten 3-2 by Napoli, largely due to a 95th-minute penalty being awarded in favour of the Partenopei after a VAR review. “I already talked last week about penalties. None of us know what a clear and obvious error is anymore. We no longer know if we have to step on a foot or just glance over it,” De Rossi said after the Napoli game. “The football that I played in no longer exists. I must tell my players to keep their arms behind their backs and not go into tackles. I don’t know what sport I am coaching.” ............ “I was one of the first to celebrate the introduction of VAR and perhaps one of the first to realise that we will always be chasing each other on certain things,” De Rossi said. “The only positive thing about what happened is that it was a match between Juve and Inter, which makes the whole world talk about it. It’s a game that the whole world watches and is massively important in Italy. “The stupidest VAR rule, and I have been saying it for three years, is that a second yellow is not as serious as a straight red. It would be easy to change that in two days. Every second yellow, from tomorrow, should be reviewed. “I think it would be difficult to find anyone who disagrees that a second yellow is not as serious as a red card after Saturday night, nowadays it changes a game even more than a goal or a penalty.” . Capello hits out at Bastoni and Chivu: ‘Two things struck me’ Fabio Capello was ‘upset’ to see Alessandro Bastoni’s ‘obvious simulation’ during Inter-Juventus but was also disappointed by Cristian Chivu, even if ‘his actions matter more than words.’ ............ “Two things struck me in particular. The first: a player like Bastoni, of international calibre and a key figure in our national team, cannot and, above all, must not behave like that,” wrote Capello. “It was very upsetting for all the football fans to see him deceive the referee with an obvious simulation, especially since he was already booked and therefore risking a second yellow card.” ............ Inter coach Chivu refused to blame Bastoni during his post-match interviews, suggesting that Kalulu should have avoided putting his hands on his defender. Before the game, however, the Inter coach had stated that he wouldn’t comment on a referee unless he heard a Serie A coach openly acknowledge a favourable referee decision. “Second thing,” continued Capello. “I know Chivu very well, as he was one of my players at Roma, but his words after the game deeply disappointed me. The Inter coach was not consistent with what he had said on the eve of the match, and in the end, he gave the impression of justifying what happened. “More than his words, however, his actions matter. Chivu substituted Bastoni at halftime because he knew exactly that he would be at risk if he stayed on the pitch. I would have expected statements of a very different tone, especially after a victory.” ............ . Read more -> https://football-italia.net/capello-hits-out-bastoni-chivu-2-struck-me/

“I’m proud of you all” – How Spalletti reacted to Inter-Juventus debacle Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti was delighted with his players’ performance despite the defeat against Inter. The Bianconeri were the victims of a glaring refereeing mistake that impeded their game. Match official Federico La Penna showed Pierre Kalulu a second yellow card for allegedly blocking Alessandro Bastoni, even though the replays proved that the latter dived, and should have been sent off for simulation, according to Luca Marelli. For his part, Spalletti expressed his frustration when confronting the referee in the tunnel at half-time, accusing him of ruining Juve’s match. ........... We know what Spalletti told his players in private following the big debacle at San Siro. “I’m proud of you all,” said the Certaldo native to the heartbroken Bianconeri stars. ............ Despite being unfairly reduced to 10 men for the entire second half, Juventus defended valiantly and even threatened to take the lead on a few occasions. And when Francesco Pio Esposito finally broke their resistance, they managed to drag themselves back by scoring a shocking equaliser through Locatelli. ............ With the fiery Derby d’Italia now in the rear-view mirror, the Bianconeri immediately turned their attention to Tuesday’s crucial meeting against Galatasaray in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs. ............ . Moggi warns Inter Milan president: “This is when they started plotting against me” Fomer Juventus sporting director Luciano Moggi notes some similarities between the circumstances that led to his ousting and the current controversy surrounding Inter president Beppe Marotta. The 88-year-old was the architect of the Bianconeri side that was considered one of the most successful clubs in Europe in the 90s and the first half of the noughties. Moggi’s work was undone by the Calciopoli scandal that rocked Italian football in 2006. Juventus were relegated to Serie B and slapped with a point deduction, while the Monticiano native was punished with a sporting ban for life. ........... On Saturday, Juventus were the victims of a major refereeing blunder that culminated in their defeat to Inter, as Pierre Kalulu was unjustly sent off for a non-existent foul on Alessandro Bastoni. ............ “What happened yesterday was just a spark, but I repeat: the underlying problem lies elsewhere,” said the former director in his interview. ............ “No one wants to come to Italy anymore. Money can be one reason, but another is all these controversies, which do nothing but damage us. For weeks, people will be talking about this, not about football.” ............ “When they started calling me number one, that was the moment they began plotting to push me out. “Now Beppe Marotta is in the same situation — he’s currently the best of them all. They say he’s the mastermind behind all this (the refereeing incidents in Inter’s favour), but that’s not true. “He deserves respect for what he’s doing at Inter and for what he did at Juventus. If he had stayed in Turin, there wouldn’t be any debt by now, and Cristiano Ronaldo would still be at home. “But here, the best are not tolerated: the culture that prevails in Italy is to tear you down and destroy you if you have too much success.” ............ “Comolli and Chiellini were right to protest, but I would have done it in the appropriate forums. That’s where you need to be angry. ............ . Read more -> https://www.juvefc.com/luciano-moggi-beppe-marotta-juventus-inter-milan/

FIGC & AIA tensions flare as Gravina calls Rocchi after Inter-Juventus incident Tensions between Inter Milan and Juventus remain high following the controversial refereeing incidents in last night’s 3-2 victory for the Nerazzurri. In the hours after the match, John Elkann, CEO of Exor, reportedly contacted Gabriele Gravina to express Juventus’ dissatisfaction with the officiating. From the Bianconeri perspective, the handling of key moments during the game was deemed unacceptable. In particular, the moment that saw Pierre Kalulu given a second yellow card after a dive by Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni. Gravina, president of the FIGC, has since held discussions with refereeing chief Gianluca Rocchi to address the specific incidents. ........... The situation unfolds against a backdrop of instability within the AIA. ............ FIGC president Gravina is also understood to have raised broader concerns with Rocchi, particularly regarding repeated simulations during Inter-Juventus. According to FIGC sources, such behaviour risks influencing referees and increases the likelihood of mistakes, while also damaging the image of Italian football. ............ . Juventus chief Elkann calls to protest at serious refereeing errors John Elkann, the President of Juventus owners Exor and heir to the Agnelli empire, personally called FIGC chief Gabriele Gravina to complain about ‘repeated refereeing errors.’ This is the latest stage in the angry protests that followed last night’s controversial 3-2 defeat to Inter, a game where Juve were down to 10 men for the entire second half. ........... Refereeing designator Gianluca Rocchi already apologised publicly and confirmed sending off Pierre Kalulu was the incorrect decision, as Alessandro Bastoni simulated contact, but as it was a second yellow card offence, VAR could not intervene. ............ As Luciano Spalletti and players did not speak to the media last night, Juventus sent directors Giorgio Chiellini and Damien Comolli to give post-match interviews instead. ............ It is reported Elkann “expressed grave dissatisfaction for the repeated and numerous refereeing errors, urging the authorities to find efficient solutions to improve the overall football system, and guarantee the integrity and credibility of Italian football.” In their complaints, Juventus have pointed out that this is only the latest in a long line of obvious errors that left clubs including Roma, Genoa, Lazio and Napoli furious. ............ . Juventus lose Holm for at least 4 weeks with new injury Juventus only just signed Emil Holm from Bologna, but he has already been ruled out for several weeks by a soleus muscle injury. The full-back came off the bench during last night’s 3-2 Serie A defeat to Inter at San Siro. At the final whistle, the player felt a twinge in his right calf and underwent radiological tests at the club’s medical centre this morning. This confirmed a low-to-medium grade myotendinous injury to the soleus muscle. ........... A formal statement notes Holm will have further tests in two weeks to determine the exact recovery time, meaning his absence will be at least a month. ............ The option to buy for Holm is €15m plus a further €3m in performance-related bonuses. ............ . Read more -> https://football-italia.net/juventus-lose-holm-for-at-least-4-weeks-injury/
