Daniel Fonseca reveals what he expects from the Juve-Roma match Daniel Fonseca expects the upcoming clash between Juventus and AS Roma to deliver an entertaining spectacle, with the two sides set to meet in one of the standout fixtures in Europe this weekend. With the kick-off approaching, anticipation is high, as neither team can afford to lose such an important contest. Both clubs understand the significance of the occasion and the potential impact the result could have on their respective positions. ............ Juventus enter the match knowing that a home victory would allow them to close the gap on Roma in the league table, a scenario their supporters are eager to see. The Bianconeri have shown encouraging signs of recovery in recent weeks, and there is a growing sense of belief around the squad. They possess several high-quality players capable of influencing the game and delivering a positive outcome against strong opposition. Despite this, the encounter is not expected to be straightforward. Roma arrive with their own ambitions and have consistently demonstrated their ability to challenge top sides. ............ Speaking about the game, Daniel Fonseca said: “A full-throttle clash. “A match that matters more for Juventus. The Bianconeri are playing at home and need a win to close the gap on Roma and their rivals. We’re seeing a balanced championship, without cannibals, and we’re not even halfway there: Spalletti’s team could aspire to get back into the Scudetto race with a win.” . Luciano Moggi says Juventus is still not at Napoli and Inter Milan’s level Juventus have shown signs of improvement over the last few weeks since Luciano Spalletti took charge of the team. The Bianconeri have long been regarded as one of the strongest sides in the league, and many supporters believe they still have a chance of challenging for the Serie A title. Recent performances have offered encouragement, suggesting that the season may yet take a positive turn. ............ Juventus are eager to maintain their momentum and continue winning matches, knowing that consistency will be vital if they are to remain competitive. Within the current squad, there is belief that further progress can be made, with individuals who have the ability to elevate the team beyond its present level. ............ Despite the progress, there are still significant obstacles standing in their way. Two teams in particular, Inter Milan and Napoli, are seen as major threats to Juventus ambitions. Both clubs have demonstrated quality and consistency over the past few months and currently set the benchmark in the league. ............ While Juventus continue to work towards improvement, there is a general acceptance that they have not yet reached the level of the top sides. This view has been reinforced by comments from Luciano Moggi, who assessed the team’s current standing and delivered a sobering assessment. He said, “Juve? Nothing has changed with Spalletti. The team has the characteristics it has, with Bremer, they can maybe improve, but they are not at the level of Inter and Napoli.” ............ . Serie A: Juventus vs. Roma – probable line-ups Lois Openda is favourite over Jonathan David for a starting spot as the Juventus centre-forward against Roma, while Matias Soulé will lead the Giallorossi’s attack. Juventus v Roma Match Preview and Prediction Juventus will test itself against AS Roma after an impressive win against Bologna in their previous outing. That victory has given the Bianconeri a renewed sense of confidence, yet concerns remain about their inconsistency and continued struggles against top-level opposition. While progress has been made, Juventus have often failed to deliver when faced with elite teams. ............ Roma arrive as one of the strongest sides in Serie A at present, having made notable progress under Gian Piero Gasperini. Their position on the league table reflects that improvement, as they currently sit above Juventus. Even if the Bianconeri were to secure all three points, they would still be unable to overtake Roma in the standings. That said, Roma have shown some vulnerability in recent weeks. They have suffered two defeats in their last three league matches, which could offer Juventus encouragement. The Old Lady will believe that if Roma can be beaten, then they have the quality to be the side that does it. This belief may prove crucial in what is expected to be a tightly contested encounter. ............ Recent meetings between these two clubs suggest that fine margins will once again decide the outcome. Their last three encounters in all competitions have ended in draws, highlighting how evenly matched they have been. Juventus also tend to be strong at home against Roma, rarely losing this fixture at the Allianz Stadium. ............ Given the current form of both sides and their recent head-to-head record, this is expected to be a closely fought contest. Prediction Juventus 2 – 1 Roma . Round 16: Juventus vs. Roma match preview We are down to the final 180 minutes of football for Juventus in 2025. It has been a calendar in which three different men have managed Juventus — which, honestly, is something you never want to see take place no matter if you’re a team competing for Europe or simply not get relegated. But this is what Juve have done and there’s no turning back now — especially with somebody like Luciano Spalletti now at the helm. It just so happens that the first half of the final two league fixtures of 2025 is against one of Spalletti’s former clubs in Italy. The Saturday before Christmas brings us another big December fixture for Juventus, with Gian Piero Gasperini and Roma will make their way to Turin to face Spalletti’s newest squad at the Allianz Stadium. It is fourth place traveling to face fifth place in Serie A. Four points separate the two clubs, so there’s no chance for Juventus to jump over another rival for a spot in the top four for the second consecutive weekend. But what we do have in store is the chance for Spalletti and Juventus to show that this run of five wins in six games since their trip to the Arctic Circle can stand the test of a solid side like Roma that is also competing for the top four. ............ Juventus were able to get three points against Bologna last weekend, arguably the biggest win since Spalletti took over nearly two months ago. Spalletti very said is was such, and now he’s had nearly a full week of training to continue to work with his new squad. He will also welcome back Juve’s best player not named Kenan Yildiz back into the starting lineup, as Gleison Bremer will be the man in the center of the Bianconeri defense against Roma, Spalletti said. So with a lot of Italy’s other big clubs over in Saudi Arabia this weekend for the Supercoppa, Juventus and Roma take center stage, with Juve trying to make things even tighter at the top of the table. ............ “The current Roma team has been transformed,” Spalletti said during his pre-match press conference on Friday. “It has taken on his own characteristics, if you will. Everyone on the team is available to know how to behave in any position on the pitch. Roma deserves our compliments because they play total football. Tomorrow will be a truly important test for us, a test of maturity.” Saying that facing Roma “will be a truly important test” for Juventus feels right on the money. Roma, thanks in large part because of their defense, are going to be a feather in Spalletti’s cap if he were to win. And if they do that, then they go into their final fixture of 2025 with the chance to end the year (with some help) actually in the top four. That is a good thing for Spalletti to build upon and hopefully take some truly good vibes into the new year after so much turbulence over the past 11 1/2 months. TEAM NEWS AREK MILIK BACK IN THE SQUAD SZN That’s right, my friends. Spalletti announced at his pre-match press conference that Milik, the Juve striker who has not played for over 500 days due to a multitude of injuries, will be called up to face Roma. Maybe he’ll even get to play a few minutes off the bench, too! The way Spalletti did describe Milik’s enthusiasm for being back was pretty genuine. “I found him to be like a happy child who has the opportunity to return to playing the game he always loved. He’s a very enthusiastic boy, he knows this sport and his position,” Spalletti said. The more important starting lineup news from Spalletti: It’s Bremer time. With the yellow card he picked up against Bologna last weekend, Teun Koopmeiners will be suspended for Roma’s trip to Turin this weekend. ............ Spalletti said he will have to evaluate the condition of Juan Cabal and Daniele Rugani on Sunday morning due to both players “being a bit tired.” While Spalletti said he is a fan of Andrea Cambiaso, the Juve manager admitted the Italian fullback “has much greater potential than what he is showing.” ............ JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH The big man is back. We’ve missed you big man. Now we hope you can stay healthy as long as you can, big man. Because we can’t see this Juventus squad go an extended period of time — be it close to three months or even longer — yet again. Bremer’s return to the lineup is a couple of weeks later than he would have hoped considering he was still unavailable for what proved to be Juventus’ lone loss under Spalletti against Napoli. But considering the fact that he is going to be back in the lineup prior to the new year, that’s something to be thankful for this holiday season. To have Bremer back in the starting lineup for such a big game is obviously going to be a huge boost for a Juventus squad that has obviously been prone to defensive lapses both this season and last during the time he was out injured. It’s also important to note that Spalletti himself has noted that Bremer’s return to the field could be one of the big factors in a potential formation change that involves a four-man defense. Whether that happens against Roma is still something that remains to be seen, but it’s something that is now probably on the list of possibilities with Bremer back in the fold. That is a big deal — both because you have arguably the best defender in Serie A back on the field and Spalletti finally pulling the trigger on what everybody feels is going to be his preferred formational setup. While one piece to that puzzle still remains somewhat unknown, the thing we do know is that the big Brazilian who means so much to Juventus’ defense is available to play from the opening whistle once again. With the fixture a little spread out to end 2025, there has been no temptation to rush him back — which is something Spalletti has made perfectly clear. Now six days after his return from his second knee surgery in a year, Bremer is set to walk out of the tunnel with his Juve teammates once more prior to the Serie A anthem being booed by the crowd at the Allianz. That’s a beautiful thing right there. MATCH INFO When: Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025. Where: Allianz Stadium, Turin, Italy. Juventus vs AS Roma: Preview and Prediction Saturday evening in Turin will see a critical clash between two Serie A giants, Juventus and AS Roma, both vying for a place in the top four. While much of the competition is focused on the Supercoppa Italiana in Saudi Arabia, these two sides will look to make up ground and boost their own ambitions for European football next season. Juventus come into this match with growing confidence after back-to-back wins in both the Champions League and Serie A. In their most recent league outing, they pulled off an impressive 1-0 win over Bologna at Stadio Dall’Ara, with second-half substitute Juan Cabal heading home the only goal of the match. This victory, combined with their 2-0 win over Pafos in Europe, has revitalised their hopes of progressing in the Champions League while keeping pace in Serie A. Under Luciano Spalletti, Juventus seem to be hitting their stride, having won two of their last three league games after a rough patch earlier in the season. Sitting fifth in the table, they will look to extend their unbeaten run in home league matches to 12 as they host AS Roma. Historically, Juventus have dominated at home against Roma, winning 11 of the last 14 encounters in Turin and keeping 10 clean sheets during that period. The Giallorossi, on the other hand, are enjoying a solid season but have struggled to find consistency in recent weeks. After topping the table in late November, they hit a rough patch with two consecutive league losses, both without scoring a goal. ............ Team News & Tactics Juventus Juventus continue to face significant defensive challenges heading into Saturday’s clash. Federico Gatti remains sidelined due to injury, while fellow centre-backs Daniele Rugani and Bremer are only just returning from layoffs. Bremer, sorely missed in recent months, could be called upon to start in this match, providing a welcome boost to a defence that has been relying on makeshift options. Teun Koopmeiners, who has been filling in at centre-back, is unavailable for selection due to a suspension, further complicating Juventus’s defensive setup. In attack, Juventus also face a shortage of options, with Dusan Vlahovic still out with injury. This leaves either Lois Openda or Jonathan David to lead the line, with David having recently ended a goal drought in the Champions League. However, he is enduring his longest goalless streak in league football since moving to Europe, having not scored in 13 consecutive Serie A games. Kenan Yildiz, who provided the assist for Juan Cabal’s match-winning goal last week, will again support the lone striker as Juventus look for a spark in the final third. Tactically, Juventus are likely to adopt a 3-4-2-1 formation to bolster their defensive resilience while maintaining fluidity in attack. Michele Di Gregorio should start in goal, with a back three comprising Pierre Kalulu, Gleison Bremer, and Lloyd Kelly. The midfield will feature Weston McKennie and Manuel Locatelli as central midfielders, while Khephren Thuram and Andrea Cambiaso will occupy the wing-back roles, providing width and covering both defensive and offensive duties. Finally, Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao will operate as the creators alongside the striker, with Jonathan David leading the attack. Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly; McKennie, Locatelli, Thuram, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; David AS Roma ............ Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Hermoso; Wesley, Kone, Cristante, Rensch; Soule, Pellegrini; Ferguson Juventus vs AS Roma: Preview and Prediction. Key Stats Juventus have won 11 of their last 14 Serie A meetings against AS Roma at home, keeping ten clean sheets during that period. AS Roma have won 12 of their last 17 away matches in Serie A, showing strong form on the road, although they have struggled in recent encounters with top-tier teams. Paulo Dybala has scored just once in Serie A this season, marking his worst start to a top-flight campaign since moving to Europe. Juventus have conceded just one goal in their last three Serie A matches. AS Roma have scored just 16 goals in Serie A this season, the fewest among teams in the top half of the table. Player to Watch Jonathan David Jonathan David is poised to be a key figure for AS Roma in this crucial fixture against Juventus. The Canadian striker has been enduring a lean spell in Serie A, with his longest goalless run since moving to Europe stretching to 13 matches. However, his experience in European competitions, coupled with his ability to break down defensive lines, makes him a potent threat when Roma need a spark. David’s movement off the ball, ability to link up with attacking midfielders like Lorenzo Pellegrini, and clinical finishing in the box are all elements that Roma will rely on to break Juventus’ resilient defence. ............ Prediction Juventus 2-1 AS Roma Juventus’s solid home record and recent defensive improvements give them the edge in this encounter. While AS Roma will put up a strong fight, particularly with the attacking potential of David, the home side’s depth and attacking options should ultimately prevail. A closely contested match is expected, but Juventus’ ability to control key moments and capitalise on Roma’s attacking struggles will see them edge a narrow victory. Spalletti shuts down David rumours but jokes: ‘He put parmesan on seafood pasta’ Luciano Spalletti has shut down rumours that Jonathan David has become an isolated figure in the Juventus dressing room and that he was not invited to the team’s Christmas dinner by joking that the Canadian committed an Italian sin when he first moved to Turin: ‘He grated parmesan on seafood pasta, they didn’t invite him again’. ............ David had not been invited to several informal team dinners, and there have been some suggestions elsewhere that he was not invited to the squad’s annual Christmas do. Several members of the Juventus squad have tried to shut these rumours down. Federico Gatti wrote on his Instagram story: “I want to take two minutes to clarify this situation. I find it inconceivable that such unfounded news, built out of nothing, on the eve of such an important game, have been allowed to circulate. “Even more surprising is seeing how many people believe this news hat doesn’t even have the slightest element of truth. The only thing that matters now is the game. The rest is just noise.” ............ Spalletti joked that David had not been invited to team meals because he committed an Italian cardinal sin after he first moved to Italy. “They made the right call not inviting him,” Spalletti joked. “The first time they took him out to dinner, he grated parmesan on seafood pasta and they didn’t invite him again.” .
